The investigation of the transmission of heat into steam boilers is one of several researches now being carried on by the Bureau of Mines that have for their object the testing of methods by which the mineral fuels in this country may be used more efficiently. A better understanding of the laws governing heat transmission into boilers will result in the design of more efficient boilers, and more efficient boilers will reduce waste in the use of fuel. The results of the investigations described in this report indicate that the conductivity of the heating plates of steam boilers is so high that the present steaming capacities can be tripled or quadrupled by forcing over the heating surfaces three or four times the weight of gases now passed over them. With well-designed mechanical-draft apparatus this greater weight of gases can be forced through the boilers at a small operating cost. It is possible to increase the capacity of many of the present boilers in this way without reducing their efficiency much; in fact by a proper arrangement of the heating surfaces the efficiency can be made higher than the present rating. The efficiency of any boiler can be increased by arranging its heating surfaces in series with respect to the path of hot gases. New boilers of high efficiency can be constructed by making the cross section of the gas passages small in comparison with the length. In Bryan Donkin's book, entitled "The Practical Physics of the Modern Steam Boiler," it is stated that James Watt obtained nearly as good an evaporation per pound of coal and per square foot of heating surface as is obtained now. The remark is probably true. At any rate, about the only decided superiority of the modern steam boilers over older types is in mechanical construction, and for this superiority credit should be given to the designers of machine tools quite as much as to the boiler engineer. The main reason for tardi- ness in boiler improvement probably lies in the reluctance of educated engineers to do the dirty and disagreeable work involved in boiler tests.

Table 10 and figure 4 show the number of fires and fire injuries occurring at the surface of underground metal/nonmetal and stone mines by state during 1990-2001. Table 10 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. A total of 12 fires occurred in 11 states; 5 of the fires caused 5 injuries. The yearly average was one fire and 0.42 injury. Five fires with two injuries occurred at metal mines, five fires with two injuries occurred at nonmetal mines, and two fires with one injury occurred at stone mines. None of the fires involved contractors. The Ewhr value was 58 x 106 hr (Irr = 0.017), and the LWD value was 75. Nevada had the most fires (two fires and no injuries). Ohio, New Mexico, Missouri, South Dakota, and Idaho each had one fire with one injury. Of these states, Missouri had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.25). Table 11, partly illustrated in figure 5, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires decreased during most of the six time periods. The number of fire injuries and employees' working hours decreased during all of the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 12-17 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 6 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 18 shows the number of fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Minimize drilling time in roof bolting. Approach The Bureau of Mines conducted a survey of 34 roof bolting machines used in underground coal mines. Results of the survey indicated that drilling time, bit cost, and respirable dust concentrations and be reduced by using the appropriate bits for drilling, To evaluate bits currently used and to find optimum cutting parameters needed to minimize drilling time, the Bureau tested two bits commonly used in most underground mines on both wet and dry systems. These are the dusthog* and shank type. The dusthog has dust ports in the bit body to remove cuttings. With shank bits, holes in the drill steel do this. Cost of each type is roughly equal. Bolters with dry vacuum systems were tested in the laboratory first. The lab tests were verified by underground tests in several mines. Bolters with low-pressure wet drilling systems were also tested under-ground. Tests concentrated on the effect of rpm, water and airflow rates, heating, wear, bit design and bit type. Lab Results -Dry Drilling Holes were drilled during the laboratory tests using a production model bolter drilling 45-inch-deep holes into mixtures of lime stone and sandstone aggregate. All tests started with new shank and dusthog type bits at 225 and 450 rpm. Thrust was about 6,000 lbs in all tests. Each bit was tested at two airflows, 15 and 25 cfm, airflows which are typical on operating roof bolter bits. Eleven styles of bits were evaluated. On the average, dusthog bits drilled 25% faster than shank types and were always cooler after drilling. The effect of RPM was tested with 5 different bit types. When bit rpm was increased from 300 to 400, drilling rates doubled. With used, well-worn bits drilling time and final bit temperature were more than doubled.

To reduce front-end loader (FEL) collision accidents by detecting obstacles in the rear blind area. The Problem Federal regulations require an audible backup alarm to activate when an FEL is backing. Since the device is constantly being activated, the warning soon becomes a normal part of the mine environment and is less effective as a warning device. Also, when several machines are working together, it is difficult to detect by ear alone just which machine is backing. Approach The Bureau defined the location for hazard detection to include an area extending 15 to 20 ft behind the rear bumper of an FEL. Then, existing surveillance and detection technology was assembled, ruggedness, and applied to the FEL's rear blind area to form a new discriminating backup alarm system employing either infrared light, ultrasonics or radar

Many different types of structures and materials have been used to build mineral processing facilities over the past few decades. Although the structure type and building material were not viewed as significant factors affecting the health of employees in these facilities when they were built, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health performed an evaluation to determine to what extent building types could impact respirable dust and noise levels. This report discusses the evaluation of three different types of product sizing silica sand structures: a masonry design, a steel-sided design, and an open structure design. The data obtained in this study indicate that the open structure design (no walls) was superior from both a dust and noise (health) standpoint compared to the other two structures. The open structure design should also be beneficial from a cost standpoint because of lower material and construction costs. Companies and design engineers should consider this open design when building new mineral processing facilities in climates where it could be applicable. Some companies may also want to consider modifying existing structures with a more open design to further reduce dust and noise levels. As the trend continues in lowering allowable dust levels for federal health standards in the U.S. mining industry, the open structure design may be an approach for some companies to consider for their operations.

Ecuador's real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 6% in 1976 despite persistent shortages of electrical power and essential fuels, which caused factory slow-downs and shutdowns. Petroleum export earnings, which made up more than 50% of total export value in 19716, totaled $565 million, a 9% increase over those of 1975. A new 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery at Esmeraldas was scheduled to go on- stream in mid- 1 97 7, operating entirely on Ecuadorean crude. Corpración Estatal Petró1era Ecualtoriana (CEPE) started construction of a 600-kilometer network of product pipelines which was scheduled to be completed in 1977 to coincide with the completion of the refinery.

Prolonged exposure to noise over a period of years generally causes permanent damage to the auditory nerve and/or its sensory components. This irreversible damage, known as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), is the most common occupational disease in the United States today. Workers suffering from NIHL have difficulty understanding human speech and hearing other workplace cues. Despite the use of regulations and efforts by government and industry to reduce NIHL, the problem today is as prevalent as it was more - than two decades ago. Recently, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a new regulation that is designed to reduce NIHL in the mining industry. One of the more significant provisions is the elimination of MSHA's past practice of giving "credit" for the use of personal hearing protection, thereby reestablishing the primacy of engineering and administrative controls. However, there is a knowledge gap that is impeding the development and implementation of engineering and administrative controls. Although significant data exist on the exposure to noise by occupational code, little is known about the noise sources that contribute the most to the worker's dose. This is problematic in a workplace with multiple noise sources and workers who travel among noise sources. Yet without this knowledge, it is difficult to focus control efforts in any practical manner. Thus, it is important to characterize noise sources sufficiently well so that the sources most hazardous to hearing are identified and those conditions of exposure that are most amenable to engineering controls are pinpointed as well. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to address this deficiency. The initial effort, conducted at a coal preparation plant and results are described in this paper. Preliminary analyses indicate that the noise levels on all floors exceeds 90 dBA in most areas, and that levels as high as 115 dBA were recorded. In addition, the one worker whose responsibility is to monitor the equipment and "house clean" the plant is slightly overexposed, even though he spends only half the shift in the plant. General information on the hearing loss problem in mining, a review of hearing protection use and noise regulations in mining, and other background materials are also presented.

New Continuous Personal Dust Monitors (CPDM) submitted to NIOSH for approval to sample coal mine dust must accurately measure respirable coal mine dust in mine environments. There are two steps in the process which may be done in any order. The manufacturer is required to submit the results of a comparative underground coal mine dust sampling study, where the candidate CPDM is compared to an approved coal mine dust sampling device (currently the Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampling Unit (CMDPSU)). This testing shall follow the guidelines outlined below and shall demonstrate through weighted regression analysis that the mean coefficient of variation with bias correction is equal to or less than 12.8%. The other step involves laboratory testing to determine the electronic and environmental stability. This testing must be conducted by a private, commercial, academic or other laboratory approved by NIOSH.

SMCRA contains five principal regulatory provisions that form the basis for its implementation: Performance Standards Performance standard safe intended to ensure that all surface mining is conducted in a way that protects the environment and the public and ensures that the mined land is restored to productive use following mining. Permits Before developing a surface or underground coal mine, an operator must have a permit issued under SMCRA. An application for a permit to conduct a surface coal mining operation is a detailed document that consists of text and numeric data describing the proposed mining and reclamation. Information must be furnished on pre-mining environmental conditions, existing land use, proposed mining and reclamation, how the performance standards will be met, and the post-mining land use. This provides the regulatory authority with the information necessary to determine that the operation can be conducted in accordance with the regulations. Performance Bonds Before a permit can be granted, an operator must post a performance bond sufficient to cover the cost of reclaiming the site in the event the operator fails to complete reclamation. The bond is not fully released until all performance standards have been met and reclamation of the site has been determined to be successful after five years in the East and Midwest, and after 10 years in the arid West. However, the bond can be partially released as various phases of reclamation are completed. Inspection and Enforcement If a violation of SMCRA or of a state surface mining and reclamation law is observed, an inspector issues a notice of violation to the operator. The violation must be corrected within a specific time, and the operator may also have to pay a fine based on the severity of the violation. If the violation is not corrected, acessation order is issued to immediately stop active coal mining, and the operator must pay a fine. If a violation is especially serious (for example, creates an Following reclamation, the land was immediately put back into agricultural production. An operator must correct all violations in order to obtain permits for new mines. Lands Unsuitable For Mining Congress recognized that certain coal deposits cannot be mined without permanent damage to unique cultural or natural resources. As a result, SMCRA protects these resources in two ways: It prohibits mining within the boundaries of national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, trails, wild and scenic rivers, wilderness and recreation areas; in areas which will adversely affect sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and within a restricted distance of occupied dwellings, public roads, buildings, parks, schools, churches, and cemeteries; and Provides a process that allows anyone whose interests may be adversely affected by proposed mining to petition to have specific lands designated unsuitable for mining.

"It has only been in recent years that the proper ventilation of metal mires has received serious consideration. Increasing temperature and humidity with greater depth in some of the larger mines of the West prevented the efficient operation of the mines and made the installation of mechanical ventilation systems necessary. Doors that interfere with tramming are generally needed to control properly the mechanically induced air currents and are one of the inherent disadvantages of the system. In fact the necessity for the use of doors in the main haulageways has discouraged the installation of mechanical ventilation in some metal mines.A number of mining companies in Arizona are using ventilation doors which can be opened and shut mechanically by the motorman without leaving his seat or stopping his train, end thus interfere very little with the transportation of the ore. The Copper Queen Branch of the Phelps-Dodge Corporation at Bisbee introduced these ventilation doors and adapted them from those in use in the company's coal mine at Dawson, New Mexico. Other mining companies have installed the same type of door and it is now being used in a number of districts in Arizona.The doors at the Calumet and Arizona mine in the Bisbee district are representative of those in use. The doors at this mine are substantially built of 2-inch lumber, are air tight, are well placed and have two openings or passageways. The main door, which is used for the motor trains, is 5 feet wide by 6 feet high and is opened by compressed air and closed by a counterweight. At the side of the motor door is the man door, which is 16 inches wide by 5 feet high and is opened and closed by hand."

To test the feasibility of hydraulic borehole mining for the recovery of phosphate ore from the deep, water-saturated deposits of northeastern Florida. Approach Phosphate ore is remotely extracted through a Bureau of Mines-developed hydraulic borehole mining system. Hydraulic borehole mining can remove underground ore deposits that cannot be economically mined by the usual open pit or underground methods. It is environmentally compatible, causing none of the surface disruption or ground water pollution usually associated with other methods of mining. Selectivity of the borehole mining system also allows economical recovery of small or discontinuous ore deposits while minimizing the removal of host rock. The hydraulic borehole mining system has been used successfully in the past to mine uranium ore and oil sands. (For examples of these and other applications of borehole mining see T Technology News Nos. 97, 95, 63, 56, and 48) How it Works A 16-inch-diameter borehole is drilled from the surface down into the buried mineral deposit, and the mining tool is installed. The borehole mining tool consists of a 12-inch-diameter pipe string and accessories capped with a three-passage swivel, and ending with a mining section. The mining section has four slurry inlets and an eductor located near the bottom of the section and a single cutting nozzle located near the top. The tool generates a high velocity water jet that erodes and slurrifies the ore. The slurry is drawn through the inlet into the eductor which lifts it to the surface where it is deposited into a slurry discharge sump. All the support equipment is located and operated on the surface; only the mining tool portion of the system is underground during the recovery operation.

"An Arizona mining company recently demonstrated a new use for the geophone by successfully locating leaks in compressed-air lines which were buried under from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 feet of fine rock fill. The following information is abstracted from data sent to the Bureau of Mines by the superintendent of the mine.The company has two parallel main compressed-air lines, about one and one-half miles long, buried under an average of two feet of fine rock fill. One of the lines is a four-inch high-pressure (1000 pounds) main, and the other line a ten-inch low pressure (90 pounds) main. The two mains are separated by a 10 to 3C foot interval, and run from the compressor plant to the No. 2 shaft, where they are taken underground. A pump line is also buried in the immediate vicinity.Several leaks, not audible enough to be located, were developed in the Alms. Various =Abode were suggested that did not seem practicable to the management. Finally, the company obtained a Bureau of Mines' geophone and experimented with it. The first test& were conducted while the pumps were running, and while there was noise on the concrete pavement, all of Which caused so much vibration in the geophone that it was impossible to detect the leaks.The second attempt was made at the close of the day shift when the compressors were not operating and when the pumps could be shut down. The valves in the far end of the surface lines were closed, and the lines were pumped to full pressure (90 and 1,000 pounds respectively).Geophone readings were then taken at 7 or 8 foot intervals directly see the lines. Several leaks some very large in the high-pressure line were audible with the geophone at distances varying from 15 to 30 feet. A con-le leak in the low-pressure line was found at a distance of 10 feet. detecting the leaks, no difficulty was found in locating them exactly. "So much has been written on the ore genesis of the Comstock Lode that it is sufficient here to describe the original ores as consisting chiefly of quartz and some calcite. In places .a considerable amount of pyrite appears. There are also minor amounts of galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. The chief silver minerals are argentite, stephanite, and polybasite. Most of the gold is native.A composite analysis of the ore; obtained by averaging the results from the early workings of several mines, is shown in Table 1.The history of the milling of Comstock ores from the Sixties to date would call for a review of the development of precious-metal metallurgy. However, a brief outline of the methods employed will give a better basis for studying the difficulties that are to be expected in the final retreatment of the remaining residues.In the earliest days amalgamation was accepted as the main recovery method. The large tonnage of good-grade ore from the Comstock Lode attracted the best metal¬lurgical talent of the time, and developed there the highest skill in the art of amalgamation, including the auxiliary chemical preparation of the ores and the mechanical operation. In this work 0.5 to 6.0 pounds of mercury was used per ton of ore. The mercury loss probably averaged about 2.5 pounds per ton of ore treated.The better grade of tailings from the ores milled were impounded, often near the works. In many cases the same tailings were reworked several times before they entered the main outflow waste stream that had its course down Seven Mile Canyon to the Carson River. Following the water course down the canyon the tailings were re-impounded, and, as metallurgy advanced, new plants were erected to again re-treat them. The most successful of these plants used forms of amalgamation, chlorination, and cyanide methods of recovery. To the tailings from the re-treatment plants, smaller tonnages of untreated tailings produced by milling lower-grade ore are continually added.Along the stream bed down the canyon a series of blanket runways were constructed, and each was independently operated for years by one or more men. All, or the heavier portion of the stream flow was run over the blankets; in this way much of the heavier concentrate, mostly sulphides and mercury products, was reclaimed.All of the residues finally entered the run-off flow along with the sewage from Virginia City and waste from the gas works, saw mills, and stables. As the accumulation along the bed of the Carson River became a nuisance, the lighter and better grade of tailings was impounded on the banks of the river. This accounts for the large dumps locally known as ""Douglas tailings."""

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines whose entries are at least 93m2 (1,000 ft2). The ventilation of large-opening mines is unique compared to other types of mines because (1) it is challenging to keep airflow velocities high enough to effectively remove or dilute airborne contaminants because the entries are so large, (2) large air volumes can be moved through the mines with little static pressure drop, and (3) stoppings that are used to direct ventilation airflows are costly to construct and to maintain. The research results suggest that the ventilation of large-opening mines is improved significantly by incorporating ventilation planning into the mine planning process, using propeller fans to direct airflow, developing new stopping materials and construction methods, and using long pillars to eliminate crosscuts where possible.

The theoretical study of WF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a comer is the concern of this paper. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency that propagates with the smallest loss. The theoretical results are compared with published measurements. This work was part of an investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals who are highly mobile within the sections and haulageways of coal mines.

This chapter includes tables from 1984 that were not available in time for publication of the 1984 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1985. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1985 was estimated at $23.2 billion, an increase of $0.07 billion over the value for 1984. This is the third consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a decrease in 1982, the value for each year has increased since 1971, or 13 out of 14 years. However. while the value of industrial minerals production continued to grow, reflecting the growth of the domestic economy, the value of metal mine production decreased in 1985 by 6%. This drop was more than offset by a 3% increase in the value of industrial minerals production because the value of industrial minerals produced was more than three times larger than the value of metals. The decrease makes 1986 the third year in the past 5 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States where production continued to lag behind growing world production. Domestic production of such major commodities 88 aluminum, copper, iron ore, phosphate rock, and zinc continued to decline owing to a number of international and domestic factors. Gold continued to be the most active commodity in the domestic metal mining industry. Despite lower prices, gold output increased to 2.5 million troy ounces, a 19% increase over that of 1984. The estimated annual production capacity of new gold mines beginning production exceeded 1 million ounces.

Each year at least one and in some years several explosions are reported as having resulted from firing of mudcapped shots in coal mines; undoubtedly a number of small or local explosions occur that are not reported; in addition there are numerous accidents, some of them fatal, attributable to this reprehensible blasting practice. It is surprising that so few explosions and other accidents from this cause occur since the practice of firing mudcapped, Even in gassy "adobe," "dobe," "sand blast," or "bulldozed" shots is widespread. mines where general blasting is safeguarded by being done with permissible explo- sives, rocks or bowlders frequently are blasted with mudcapped shots of dynamite; even if permissible explosives are used, this type of shooting is dangerous. The usual method of preparing a mudcapped shot is to place the explosive, either in loose or cartridge form, with the detonator or "cap" on top of a piece of rock or coal and cover it with several handfuls of moist clay, loam, sand, or When the shot is road dust; in many cases there is no covering of any kind. fired a dense cloud of dust, together with an intensively hot fleme, are thrown into suspension, and if the dust is explosive or ignitable an explosion or igni- tion is likely to result practically simultaneously. The presence of gas greatly increases the explosibility of the dust, as well as the probability of an ignition. Develop improved blasting practices that can help to curb overbreak in highwalls at surface mines, thereby reducing the hazards of rock-falls to workers and equipment, The Problem The serious hazard in surface mining is the falling of rock from highwalls. Poor highwall stability is caused in part by geologic conditions, but often is aggravated by faulty blasting practices, where the explosive energy not only fractures the rock to be excavated, but also damages the rock that borders the excavation. This reduces the general stability of the hlghwall and increases the rockfall potential. The probability of injury to mine workers or damage to equipment associated with exposure to the highwall increases with the height of the highwall and the extent of its overbreakage. Most rockfalls occur in the first 15 days after a new highwall is exposed. This statistic is significant since most of the work below a highwall is done during this period. The area of greatest hazard is within 25 ft of the toe for rocks that fall vertically, and up to 90 ft from the toe for falling rocks that are deflected by the highwall during their descent, The workers most frequently involved in such accidents are dozer operators, ground laborers, and shovel operators or oilers.
