THIS CHAPTER reviews the highlights of developments in mining technology during 1956 and presents a special report on the design of mine openings in stable ground. This special report is presented each year in an endeavor to stimulate use of the scientific approach to the solution of problems related to mining technology. Assuming that the literature on mining technology reflects trends in mining, it appears that two areas of activity were given most attention in 1956. One was research on mining technology,4 and the other was improvement of transportation, particularly trackless transportation, both at surface and underground mines.

A representative sample of gold-silver ore from the Keystone Mine, Manhattan, Nye County, Nev., was submitted for these tests. The ore was an altered diorite rock with very small amounts of sulfide minerals of copper, lead, zinc, antimony, and arsenic disseminated in fine grains throughout. As indicated by test results, much of the silver content of the ore apparently was associated with these sulfide minerals. The gold probably occurred with iron oxides in the ore. Assays showed 0.16 ounce of gold and 2.8 ounces of silver per ton of ore. This investigation was made to study application of activated carbon in the cyanidation treatment of the ore. The treatment proposed for u.se at the mill is as follows: The ore is crushed to minus-10-mesh size and separated into plus -and minus-65-mesh portions. The minus-10, plus 65-mesh sands are cyanided by leaching and the minus -65-mesh slimes by agitating. After 48 hours of agitation the slime pulp is thickened to about 1:1 water:solid ratio, and part of the pregnant solution is recovered. The pulp is then diluted to a 2:1 ratio, and the remaining dissolved values are extracted with the activated carbon. The barren pulp then can be discarded. This procedure eliminates the necessity for further washing the slime pulp and also recovers most of the excess sodium cyanide required for extracting the optimum amount of silver from this portion of the ore.

The law now in effect (January 30, 1931) in the Netherlands with respect to the prospecting for and the developing of minerals is regulated by , or based upon , the French Act of April 21 , 1810 , "Concernant les mines , les minières et les carrières ( Bulletin des Lois No. 285) . " A second edition of a compilation ( by Drs . Ccuvee and Ritter ) of the mining legislation of Holland , including this act with other legal requirements , was published in 1928 under the title of "De Nederlandsche Mijnwetgeving , " by H. T. Tjeenk Willink & Zoon , Haarlem. In this abstract reference is made to the Act of 1810 , the Royal Decree of September 18, 1818 , the Mining Act of 1903 , and the Act of June 20 , 1924 .

Beside many other damaging effects of acid mine drainage, corrosion of pipe lines and pumps frequently adds much to mine operating costs. Not only is it often necessary to install special and relatively costly acid-resistant materials, but even these may require frequent replacements. It is not unusual for ordinary steel pipe to last only a few days in some highly acid waters, while other common materials, though more resistant, frequently last only a few weeks. In the spring of 1935, local PWA authorities offered to assign a number of persons to various problems under the direction of regular employees of the Bureau of Mines. It was believed that at least some simple tests on as many different kinds of acid-resistant pipes as could readily be obtained might produce interesting and valuable information for the mining industry. This paper describes the tests and some results that have since been noted.

In connection with its investigation looking to the prevention of waste and the increase of safety and efficiency in the mineral indus- tries the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the possible uses of the electric furnace in metallurgy. This bulletin presents a com- pilation of such data as seem to be useful for the information of persons who may be interested in the matter. In the application of electricity to metallurgy three kinds of processes are involved, namely, mechanical, thermal, and electrolytic. Under the mechanical application of electricity come those proc- esses of dressing and concentrating ores that are known as either electrostatic or electromagnetic processes. In electrothermic processes the current is used as a source of heat. The fundamental differences between the various types of electric furnace that are at present in commercial use relate to the manner in which the electric current is applied, as may be noted by reference to that part of this report in which the subject is discussed. In electrolytic processes the electric current is used for depositing metals from solutions. The process may be conducted in one of the following ways: (1) The material to be treated may be put into solu- tion and then electrolyzed, the material thus treated forming the electrolyte; (2) the material to be treated may form the anode or be placed in contact with the anode; or (3) the material to be treated may form the cathode or be placed in contact with the cathode. This report treats of electrothermic processes, with the possible exception of those for the reduction of aluminum from its ores. Moreover, of the processes used in the so-called electrochemical in- dustries only those for the reduction of an ore to metal, or to a com- pound of the metal that is of value in itself, or is an aid in metallurgical work, are here discussed.

Horizontal displacements and ground strains induced by mine subsidence are significant information needed for calculating damage and developing precautions against subsidence effects on surface structures. To devise a simple method for determining the surface horizonal displacements and strains simultaneously with the subsidence prediction, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the significance of the tilt number, which is the proportionality constant in the relationship between the horizontal displacement and the slope of the subsidence profile. The ratio of the tilt number to the critical radius of the subsidence trough is identical to the ratio of the maximum possible horizontal displacement to the full subsidence, which is found to be constant in most European coalfields. If this ratio is known for a particular minesite in the United States, then horizontal displacement and ground strains can be readily obtained from the primary subsidence data.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of a heavy liquid in combination with fluid cyclones to separate brucite from a Nevada ore on a continuous basis, using a mixture of dibromomethane and trichloroethylene having a density of 2.44 grams per cubic centimeter. Single-stage cyclone separation produced a concentrate that contained 84 percent of the total magnesia at a grade, on a calcined basis, of 95.6 percent MgO.

Illinois has the largest reported bituminous coal resources of any state and is one of largest coal-producing states in the nation. Coal-bearing rocks underlie about 65 percent of Illinois, including all or part of 86 of its 102 counties. An estimated 18 1 billion tons of coal resources are still in the ground. Using present mining methods, more than 30 billion tons of coal are classified as recoverable. This represents almost one-eighth of the total recoverable reserves of all types of coal in the United States. The state's surface mining regulatory program was conditionally approved June 1,1982. It received full approval October 25,1988. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 1, 1982, and the AML emergency authority June 11, 1984.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. [The legislation in many States against the present method of producing carbon-black by the incomplete combustion of natural gas, and the continually increasing demand for gas for otter purposes, indicates that the supply of carbon-black may Gradually be decreased and that new methods for its production, utilizing a greater parentage of the carbon in the has should be developed. In the course of investigations of the effects on hydrocarbons of high voltage discharges, it was noted that under certain conditions natural gas could be decomposed and that carbon-black could be produced. The effects of several tyres of electrical discharges on natural gas have, accordingly, been studied' in order to find out the fundamental factors underlying the reactions and their possible influence in the recovery of a greater part of the carbon content of natural gas than is now possible. Present commercial plants using natural gas for the manufacture of carbon-black recover from 0.9 to 1.5 pounds of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gala consumed, or less than 5 per cent of the total Gabon in the gas: It should be noted, however, that the, present methods involve heating the gas to incandescense by burning it as a luminous flame, and a considerable part of the gas is thus consumed as a source of hest. If this heat can be supplied from some other source, or if a more efficient method of applying the energy con. tamed in part of the gas, to the decomposition of the rest of it, can be worked out, then a greater yield of carbon-black per thousand cubic feet of gas care be expected. The present abort paper contains a brief summary of tie investigations so far conducted upon natural gas.]

Results of initial research by the Bureau of Mines are given on the dust explosion hazard of float coal and on the related factors of occurrence, rate of production, sampling techniques, transport, and deposition of float coal. Tentatively, it is suggested that where float coal deposits prevail, a mini-mum of 80 percent incombustible be maintained in the top 1/8-inch layer to neutralize the explosion hazard of the surficial coal deposit.

This report is the fifth in a series concerning the Bureau of Mines program for microfilming maps of abandoned mines in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. A catalog of the microfilmed maps of 47 of 49 major mines and 18 independent mines in the Southern field is presented. Previous reports included catalogs of microfilmed maps of mines in the Eastern Middle field, the Wyoming and Lackawanna Basins of the Northern field, and the Western Middle anthracite field.

"The Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, is investigating the preparation of pulverized coal for fuel. In this study the relative amount of surface in various products and samples had to be assessed. Because of the familiarity with screens and because of the simplicity of using the inverse ratio of the opening for ascertaining the amount of relative surface in the respective sizes, screens down to and including 270-mesh were used. This choice was made in full cognizance of the irregularity of screens, but it seemed that if the same screens were used throughout all the tests the relative values would be satisfactory.In dealing with the subsieve sizes, pneumatic elutriation was used to make several fractions to extend the sizing analysis into the range of hypothetical screens. This kind of a sizing analysis was thought necessary because it is familiar to all operators, and, furthermore, it is amenable to several ways of plotting curves that bring out the characteristics of various coals and various methods of grinding.The method of obtaining the data from which to set up the hypothetical screen scale is the subject of this paper. It consists in determining the average projected area of the particles in the respective elutriated products. By extending the ""area method"" to sieve sizes, a factor is found that may be applied to the subsieve sizes, and thus the scale is projected in a regular manner. This method avoids contentions about specific surface and steers clear of ""average diameter"" except as material sized on screens may be said to have an average diameter."

Cooperative efforts by the Bureau of Mines and Agapito & Associates, Inc., Grand Junction, CO, achieved the research objective of showing that data from measurements of the rate and change in rate of mine roof movement can be effective in detecting roof instability. Several instruments and techniques have been used to monitor roof movement and to detect imminent roof caves during pillar robbing. Early detection of unstable conditions can provide time either to withdraw personnel and equipment or to allocate supplemental support to prevent injury or down-time. Critical convergence rates were determined both manually and electronically. The detection of critical rate of movement has been shown to be an effective tool in ground control efforts.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has successfully demonstrated an electrooxidation-solvent extraction-carbon adsorption process for recovering molybdenum and rhenium from offgrade concentrates. The flow sequence consists of dissolution of metal values by electrooxidation, liquid-solid separation by thickening, acidification and chlorate ion removal by sulfur dioxide treatment, solvent extraction to concentrate the molybdenum and rhenium, separation of molybdenum and rhenium by carbon adsorption, and metal recovery by crystallization. Molybdenum and rhenium were recovered as ammonium paramolybdate and ammonium perrhenate. Electrolysis of brine-concentrate pulps to generate a hypochlorite oxidizing agent in situ resulted in the dissolution of 98.9 and 99.1 pct of the molybdenum and rhenium, respectively, at an energy consumption of 13.7 kwhr/lb of molybdenum extracted.

"INTRODCJCTJONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acctyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to mediate a broad range of biological activities. 1·3 Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue,4 secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytcs,5 airway constriction,6 pulmonary edema,7 and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of thelungs.8-9PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin. 1~1 3 Therefore, PAF may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of P AF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type Il epithelial cells.METHODSIsolation of CellsNeutrophils were isolated from human blood by dextran settling and centrifugal elutriation.14 Isolated neutrophils (93% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium (145 mM NaCl, 5 mM KCI, 10 mM HEPES, 5 mM glucose, and 1 mM CaC12; pH = 7.4). Cell number and volume were determined with an electronic cell counter equipped with a sizing attachment.Rat alveolar macrophages were obtained by pulmonary lavage with ea2+, Mg2+-free Hanks balanced salts solution. 15 Alveolar macrophages (94% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium, counted, and sized electronically.Rat alveolar type Il cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion for 35 minutes at 37°C with 40 µ/ml type I elastasc and 0.1 % collagenase and purified by centrifugal elutriation. 16.17 Type Il cells (92 % pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium for measurement of membrane potential, oxygen consumption, and trypan blue exclusion. Type Il pneumocytcs were resuspended in 0.1 M NaCl plus 0.05 M HEPES (pH = 7.8) to measure cytochrome P450-dependent activities and aggregation. Cell size and number were determined electronically."

"In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 20 and 25 outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible.In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 20 and condition 2 on page 25. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES TESTED UNDER SCHEDULE 17CAn active list of permissible explosives was published in October 1938 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3421, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. This list included 191 brand names.Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1939, placed 56 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Fifty-seven permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The brand names of four explosives were rescinded curing the year. The present list contains 18G brand names. As a part of a program to promote conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum resources, Bureau of Mines engineers are studying secondary oil-recovery projects in the United States. Published reports that set forth the pertinent facts of these operations help others to profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study of secondary-recovery methods used in Kentucky by the Cumberland Petroleum Co. on its L. C. Bailey lease, Oil Springs pool, Magoffin County, Ky. This is believed to be the first water-flooding project in eastern Kentucky (fig. 1).

"Platelet activating factor (PAF) can be released from pneumocytes following exposure to occupational dust (Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 135:83, 1987). In addition, PAF has been shown to induce pulmonary inflammation, edema, and bronchoconstriction (Hosp. Prac. 19, 67, 1983). This investigation reports the effects of PAF on the properties of three types of cells found in the lung. PAF (1-100, K1/2 = 2.5 pH) caused depolarization of neutrophils as well as generation of chemiluminescence and secretion of hydrogen peroxide. These responses were dependent on the presence of extracellular sodium. However, PAF did not alter oxygen consumption of neutrophils. Although PAF (10 uM) caused depolarization of alveolar macrophages, no stimulation of chemiluminestence, superoxide secretion, or oxygen consumption was observed. However, PAF (10 uM). did potentiate chemiluminescence and superoxide secretion in response to zymosan (2 mg/ml) by 55% and 36%, respectively. In addition, PAF (10-90 uM) caused aggregation of alveolar macrophages. PAF (2-10 uM) also caused depolarization of type II cells, but did not affect membrane integrity or oxygen consumption. However, PAF (10-18 PM) enhanced the activities of two distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 in type II cells and caused aggregation of type II cells at PAF doses above 18 uM.
