The response of two structures to blast-induced ground vibrations were evaluated and compared in order to quantify the impact of different blasting operations, hard rock and soft rock blasting, upon the structures movements. The first instrumented structure was a residential type, located in the operational area of a coal mine, were blasting is conducted in soft rocks, such as siltstone and coal, with compressive strength ranging from 20 to 50 MPa. Blasting is characterized by low benches, with hole lengths averaging 5.5 m (18 ft) and low powder factors, 140 to 210 g/m3 (0.236 to 0.354 lb/yd3), resulting in very little horizontal movement of the rock during the blast. The second structure was a commercial building, located in a basalt quarry (compressive strength between 109 and 180 MPa), where blasting is conducted in 12 m (39.4 ft) benches with powder factors ranging from 200 to 350 g/m3 (0.337 to 0.590 lb/yd3). Velocity sensors were placed on the structure walls to measure wall displacements and calculate blast-induced strains in the walls, and these results were compared with the driving ground excitations. The calculated strains were compared with the limits of rupture of the cement grout used as mortar between bricks and as wall coating, considered to be the weakest material in the structure composition. The blast-induced response of existing cracks in the structures were also measured using displacement gages and compared to the daily influence of weather fluctuations, such as changes in temperature and humidity, on crack movement. The results show that for the same levels of ground motions the structures present different movement, resulting in distinct levels of induced strains on the walls depending on the geology. The influence of long-term temperature and humidity variations on crack movements on both structures is very similar, during the same seasons of the year. Crack response to long-term weather changes is 2.5 to 3.5 times greater than blast influences.

Drilling automation technology is well advanced and automated drill rigs are in use at a number of operating mines. This is not the case for the other drill and blast processes due to significant technical challenges to overcome. These challenges, with regard to the current “on bench” practices, include placing the initiators, loading the explosive and connecting up the initiation system. Although difficult, these challenges will be solved with engineering advances.

Prepare ATF Report of Theft or Loss (ATF Form 5400.5). A Report of Theft or Loss - Explosives Materials must be prepared when it is discovered that explosive materials are missing from inventory. Submit the original to the U.S. Bomb Data Center and keep a copy for your records. The form can be obtained from the ATF Distribution Center or from www.atf.gov. Although the U.S. Bomb Data Center should be notified as soon as possible, Federal law requires notification within 24 hours of the discovery. A full inventory check is also highly recommended (but not required) to locate missing explosives and to prevent future losses.

It has been well understood that blasting is the cost-effective method for breaking rocks as compared with the mechanical systems. However, vibrations induced by blasting in open-pit mines could pose problems to the structures surrounding the mine site. Blast-induced ground vibration has been the subject of research for several studies in the past; because of the complex nature of blasting mechanism, it is difficult to predict blast-induced vibrations. Even though there are several approaches proposed by the previous researchers, traditional regression analysis is still playing an important role in predicting blast-inducedgroundvibrations.

The spherical element computer code DMC (Distinct Motion Code) used to model rock motion resulting from blasting has been enhanced to allow routine computer simulations of bench blasting. The enhancements required for bench blast simulation include: 1) modifying the gas flow portion of DMC, 2) adding a new explosive gas equation of state capability, 3) modifying the porosity calculation, and 4) accounting for blastwell spacing parallel to the face.

The missing link is a connector between the congested downtown area of Knoxville, Tennessee adjacent to the former World's Fair site, the I_40 I_75, and Western Avenue traffic arteries. This connecter was designed to accommodate the 37,470 motorists who presently travel through these highly congested narrow paths to be replaced by the 21.8 million dollar Henely Street Connecter. All construction and blasting was to take place while existing traffic was re_routed so as to allow access between the downtown area and the vital interstate corridor. To avoid major traffic problems, the project was to be accomplished in three phases: (1) the Western Avenue viaduct demolition; (2) two new viaducts to be constructed; (3) the open box cut at Henely Street next to the L & N Depot. Due to the past attempts by the Fort Sanders Community Home Owners group and the Historical Society to stop the Henely Street Connector, this project involved a very comprehensive blasting damage control program with special provisions of .5 inches per second measured at the foundation of the closest structure.

This paper includes research and investigation into blast design and blast optimization for vibration control in municipal and tight blasting situations, where specifications were extremely stringent. The paper is written for the field blaster to understand and develop blast plans based on field conditions. The paper includes blast design considerations, utilizing seismograph arrays to check and predict vibration results, and problems encountered in vibration monitoring in extremely tight situations (0-20 feet). Blast vibration frequency, acceleration, peak particle velocities, and relative displacement are discussed with effects in the near and far fields and blast designs utilized to stay under limits. The paper also discusses using the latest in technology for blast design to control vibration. Equipment includes 2D and 3D laser profiling systems, digital video, fragmentation analysis, seismograph arrays, and borehole tracking devices. Other topics are discussed such as public relations, working with regulatory personnel, unions, and other project consultants, and the problems associated with municipal blasting situations, such as, flyrock and proximity of other personnel and equipment on the project.

The Kaiser Aluminum Company Smelter, one of several in the Pacific Northwest, was built in 1942 and operated by the Olin Company during World War II and then purchased by Kaiser Aluminum after the war. At its height, the facility employed over 350 workers and was capable of producing 73,000 tons of aluminum per year. It was closed in 2000 through a combination of rising electrical and labor costs, and the inability to compete with more up-to-date foreign facilities.

Punatsangchu Hydroelectric Project Authority is constructing 1020 MW underground hydroelectric project in Bhutan. The project envisages construction of concrete dam, Desilting Chamber, Head Race Tunnel, Power House Complex and Tail Race Tunnel. Tunneling is one of the major activity in any underground projects as they are driven for multiple activities. By and large the tunnels are a major part of connecting networks from surface to caverns/underground working sites. Many tunnels in hydropower project are part of water conducting systems and one such important tunnel is the Tail Race Tunnel in this project and had to be excavated in thinly foliated rockmass conditions by D&B method. The rockmass is traversed by three to four joint sets and few minor shear seams. Rock Class “Q” values were between III and IV. Tunnel was excavated by full face parallel hole drilling blasting method. The adopted blasting method consisted of drilling 45mm (1.77 inch) diameter holes to a depth of 2m and the drilled holes were charged with 40mm (1.57 inch) diameter cartridge explosives and charges were initiated with half second non electric initiators. The perimeter holes were drilled at closer spacing of 30cm (1 feet) and alternate holes were charged using 32mm (1.23 inch) diameter cartridges explosive. Low dipping foliation joints present in the rockmass tend to slab in crown portion and erratic occurrence of intrusive bodies lead to unpredictable behavior of rock mass posing a major challenge for the safe excavation. Stability was a major issue through controlled blasting under constant supervision too could not limit the overbreak in certain weak rockmass conditions thereby exposing cavities of about 2.5m (8.2 feet). The stabilization of these cavities and handling the overbreak due to rockmass condition was time consuming and warranted additional supports. With systematic measurements and controlled blast designs the Horse Shoe Shaped Tail Race Tunnel of 9.1 m (29.85 feet) diameter and 304m (997.37 feet) length to connect with Downstream Surge Gallery of 314m (1030 feet) length, 18m (59 feet) wide and 58.8m (193 feet) height in thinly foliated and jointed biotite gneiss rockmass was successfully excavated.

The emergence of electronic detonators for use in production mine blasting has enabled mining professionals to rethink the traditional blast design methodologies that pertain to timing. In many ways, electronic detonators can allow great advances in productivity, cost effectiveness, fragmentation, and safety. This paper reports on an independent study quantifying the accuracy of two electronic and two non-electric systems in which 674 detonators were tested. This research aimed to determine the accuracy of commercially available electronic detonators as compared to non-electric shocktube systems. Each system was tested over the viable ranges of delays available. Statistical models were then applied to quantify the scatter present in each system. Suggestions for the use of electronic detonators are made from the findings of this work. This work was made possible through funding from the United States Department of the Interior Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

"This report investigates whether it is tractable and thereupon reasonable to remove the boosterinfluences when ranking the toxic fumes of non-cap-sensitive mining explosives. The hazard potential is represented by relative fume toxicity RFT, the resultant influence computed from a formulated rule with a restricted set (tally) of fume components and multiplying constants. The RFT result is compared to the rule criterion that represents the worst case tolerable toxicity stipulated by regulations or otherwise. The typical nonstoichiometric booster composition can render notable unwanted influence on the RFT ranking results. Historically, the remedy was to shoot the booster separately and reduce the trial concentrations by the relevant subtractions. Unreal negative concentration results were noted on rare occasions, revealing the faulty nature of the reduction procedure. With thermodynamic reaction chemistry codes TDRC, on the other hand, the booster ingredients can be retained in or removed from the reactant tabulation, yielding reduction factors taken as the concentration ratios for the two circumstances. The underlying presumption regarding reduction factors is that the ratios of component concentrations with and without the booster ingredients when resolved theoretically ought to equal those rendered experimentally, when tractable. Upon rearranging the presumed relationship, the unadjusted fume concentrations divided by theoretical reduction factors yield the wanted readjusted fume concentrations, thereby removing the booster influence without generating unreal negative concentrations."

In August of 2013 the USDA Forest Service (USFS) blasted bedrock at the base of a waterfall in Kanalku Creek within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness Area on Admiralty Island in the Tongass National Forest located in Southeast Alaska. The purpose of the blasting was to widen and deepen a plunge pool at the base of a waterfall complex considered to be a partial barrier to migrating sockeye salmon. Drilling and blasting to remove 12 to 15 cubic yards of rock occurred over a two day period.

Nitro Nobel (the company was acquired by Dyno Nobel in 1986) originally developed non-electric initiation systems. These system were based on the 1967 invention of the shock tube fuse by Per-Anders Persson. Through licensees CIL and EB production and sales also started in Canada and the US. Early on, some accidental initiations of the tube occurred in production. It was found that static electricity was involved. After corrective action was taken - by changing the aluminium content in the tube core load - no further accidental initiations were reported until 1991.

"Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) Smelter scheduled a rebuild of their flash smelting furnace forSeptember, 2014. KUC’s goal in this project was to reduce the rebuild time from 65 to 55 days by using explosives to break the matte and brick layers of the uptake shaft and hearth sections of the furnace. Previous rebuilds had employed the slower technique of mechanical breakers to remove the matte and brick layers which took 22 days. KUC has many years of experience in removing slag from the uptake shaft, but they had never used explosives to remove the hearth. As far as KUC was aware, no other smelter operation had attempted a hearth removal in this way."

May 13th, in the back country of Nice @arice) collapsed a complete piece of mountain, cutting the RN 2085 and destroying a part of Valabfre’s viaduct. The fist inspections of the site showed that materials had broken loose from surrounding cliffs, The geologists discovered that a block of several thousands of m3 remained suspended in cliff and that it presented a risk raised of gliding. Decision to destroy it by blasting in one blast was there taken by the French department’s council of the Maritime Alps. A race against the clock engaged. Indeed, the RN on 2085 is the main axis connecting the village of Saint Etienne de Tinee and the resort station of ISOLA in the centre of Nice
