Vast mineral resources of copper, zinc, cobalt and gold have been identified off the coast of Papua New Guinea at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. Accessing them in a cost effective manner and without destroying the marine habitat requires overcoming numerous technical and operational challenges. Although there are a number of deep-sea mining operations underway worldwide, the depths encountered are significantly less than will be required to mine these ore deposits. To date, only the oil industry has developed technologies for successfully accessing reserves at depths of 3,000m.

Recent technological breakthroughs in the fields of ceramics, medicine, aerospace engineering and electronics (semi- and superconductors) are constantly creating new uses and an ongoing increasing demand for a variety of rare valuable trace metals. These so-called high-tech elements such as hafnium (Hf), titanium (Ti,) niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), zirconium (Zr), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V) and the rare earth elements (REE), many of them of strategic importance, occur inter alia at elevated and potentially economic concentrations in marine ferromanganese nodules and ferromanganese crusts, making those deep sea deposits potential future resources of these metals. As these metals are mostly present in the lattice of the manganese and iron phases, which are strongly intergrown, rather than in separate mineral phases within the nodules and crusts (Koschinsky and Hein, 2003), reductive dissolution of the host phases is a prerequisite to release and dissolve the valuable metals. To evaluate the association of these rare valuable metals with their mineral carrier phases, sequential leaching experiments were carried out on selected samples in a first step in our project.

The particles that make up the deep-sea sediments have two main sources: 1) those that are created in situ from dissolved components and 2) those that are washed into the ocean in solid phases from the continents, atmosphere, space and interior of the Earth. Many particles as they sink through the water column reaches the seabed and are known as pelagic sediments with terrigenous, biogenic, authigenic, and cosmogenic components. Among the minerals found in the terrigenous fraction of pelagic sediments are quartz, clay minerals, feldspar, micas, ferromagnesians, and the biogenic fraction with remains of siliceous organisms, such as, radiolarian and diatoms. The chemical nature of marine sediments is controlled by the contribution of particulate matter derived from various sources with varying compositions for the fixing of elements during deposition and the compositional changes carried out within the sediments during diagenesis. The seabed deposits type and distribution are very complex at the hydrothermal field. In this paper, we provided an approach to study the seabed deposits classification at the Precious Stone Mountain hydrothermal field (PSMHF) using MultiBeam sonar data . The PSMHF was found in the Galapogas microplate at the Leg 3 of the Chinese COMRA 21st Cruise. Using this approach, the seabed deposits at the PSMHF are mainly classified into three types, which are rock, breccia and sediment, respectively. We can find the distribution of the three types of seabed deposits according to the sonar backscatter data. The rocks are mostly distributed around the hydrothermal vent. The breccia are located at the foot of the vent. Most sediments are distributed at the southwest to the vent due to bottom current. Combining with seabed video, TV-Grab sample and the backscatter data, we draw the map of the seabed deposits distribution at the PSMHF.

The chemical composition of the nodules varies with the type of manganese minerals and the size and characteristics of their nucleus but those who have an economic interest have nucleus, generally : Mn> Fe> 6> Si> Al> Ba> Ni> Cu > Co. The Pacific Rim is an area of abundant occurrence of polymetallic nodules and the Pacific sea floor of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is one of the most interesting areas in regard to the genesis of polymetallic nodules. Their abundance in the ocean floor is very variable, as there are places where they cover more than 70% of the ocean floor. The nodules can be found at any depth, but the highest concentrations are between 4000 and 6000. Hydrothermal processes that occurs near the East Pacific Rise at 21° N, may inputs metallic elements to nodules and to pelagic sediments, especially in regions close to the dorsal, as a greater influence hydrogenetic processes are present westward Metals such as Cu, Co, Ni, Sn, Fe, Mg, Pb, Zn and Ba show a relationship with the East Pacific hydrothermal activity and sea currents carry these metals in solution to the Clarion-Clipperton fracture area, where there are hydrogenic metals sources (Al, Fe and Mn).

Cold Ocean Placers: Polar storms, interstadial littorals and crustal adjustments. Polar storms with consistent strong winds in the Southern, Antarctic Ocean are responsible for placer deposits on both the east and west coasts of Australia, on the west coast of New Zealand, as well as on the coasts of South America and Africa. Arctic winds, confined by both land and ice, generate similar placers in Labrador and Greenland as well as on the coasts of Scotland, Norway, Hudson's Bay, Nome, Goodnews Bay, Kamchatka and the north coast of Siberia. Tasman and Labrador seas have several parallels to Newfoundland, including north-south polar waterways, young spreading ocean floors, and youthful coastal escarpments with glaciated coasts. Black sand beds in beach deposits on the modern and Pleistocene transgression strandlines, skewed to the distal ends of beaches, and set into either bedrock or sediment fill, are the locus of the light-heavy mineral placers with titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements; chromium; iron; and tin. Gold and platinum group elements are the ultra heavy minerals at one end of the spectrum and tend occur in proximal placers generated, either directly from bedrock sources, or as minor by-products in distal light-heavy mineral placers. Diamonds are unusual in that the value is only in the larger stones, despite the formation of beach sand and aeolian placers in the littoral zone, and the sites of concentration are in very high energy bedrock traps, on terraces that are mined to depths of 100 metres below sealevel.

In response to anthropogenic climate change, the way in which we use and generate energy is changing. To facilitate these developments, it is essential that we increase and diversify the supply of ‘E-Tech’ elements essential for cleaner energy generation and more efficient usage. The vast majority of these materials (e.g. cobalt, lithium, niobium, platinum group metals, rare earth elements and indium) come almost exclusively from mining and new resources must be found and developed in order to secure supply and meet the demands of the future. Ferromanganese (FeMn) crusts are rich in cobalt, tellurium and rare earth metals, and are common on seafloor hard grounds at water depths over 1000 m. The mining of both FeMn crusts and nodules is potentially viable dependent of the balance of cobalt and nickle prices (Martino & Parson, 2012), however, crusts need to be at least 4 cm thick with cobalt contents of at least 0.8% (International Seabed Authority, 2008). The difficulty for those wishing to exploit these resources is firstly finding them, and secondly assessing their potential remotely. Such capability would not only save time and money, but also allow mining operations to be more focused, reducing needless destruction of seafloor habitats from exploratory mining or mining of noneconomically worthwhile deposits. In this contribution, we examine the distribution of crusts on a single Atlantic Gyot (Tropic Seamount), the morphology of FeMn crusts, their variable growth patterns and the characteristic geophysical response from crusts in various datasets, including ship based 60 m resolution multibeam and high resolution bathymetry, backscatter and sub-bottom profiler data acquired using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV).

Are hydrothermal emissions from subduction-related volcanic arcs important to the total hydrothermal burden of the oceans? While historical observations of hydrothermal venting of fluids at mid-ocean ridgecrests, intra-plate hotspots, and backarc spreading centers are numerous, we remain poorly informed regarding the contributions from hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic submarine arcs. Here we report the chemical results from the first systematic assessment for hydrothermal activity at an intra-oceanic arc front. We discovered that 7 of the 13 submarine volcanoes that define a 260-km-long segment of the southern Kermadec arc north of New Zealand are hydrothermally active. Most significant here is that the chemical compositions of the various hydrothermal systems, inferred from back-extrapolation of observations of hydrothermal plumes, are diverse, and in many instances enriched in the concentrations of gases (e.g., CO2 and H2S) and metals (e.g., Fe and Mn) compared to effluents commonly discharged from mid-ocean ridges. If our results are generally representative of submarine arcs, whose global extent may equal one-third that of ridgecrests, the answer to our leading question could be a resounding yes in terms of both volume and chemical composition.

Diamonds were discovered on the coast of Namibia in 1907 but it was not until 1962 that the first gems were produced from offshore by a barge employing an airlift. Geophysical surveys and a sampling program were initiated and an understanding of the diamond distribution was gained. Several vessels, some with multiple airlifts, were used until the early 1970's. Some spectacular production results were achieved, but generally the systems failed to retrieve the gravels efficiently from beneath the overburden and off the bedrock. Various companies continued working with mixed outcomes until the mid-1980's, when new regulations were enacted by the authorities. The local Southern sea conditions dictate the present mining methods which are now applied over several hundred kilometers of the west coast. In shallow waters divers operate from small vessels, suctioning the diamondiferous gravels to surface with gravel pumps. In water depths of up to 50 m airlifts of various designs continue to be utilized with recovery plants installed on the vessels. Beyond 100 m depths a remote controlled, tracked, vehicle is used, together with a large drill mounted on swell compensator. Each system is deployed from a separate ocean-going vessel. Production of diamonds from the offshore is rising rapidly, with expectations of further increases. The coastline is likely to be the scene of new developments in marine mining techniques.

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. As the gas hydrates are to be evaluated as a new future energy resource globally, Korean government has initiated national R/D program covering fundamental exploration survey for resources assessment in Korean deep waters and production technology development. Around 235 million tonnes of marine aggregates have been dredged in the last decade from the UK continental shelf alone. The current distribution of marine aggregate production licence areas in North West Europe reflects the relationship between a variety of factors such as the natural distribution of deposits of sand and gravel, the demand for aggregates, the technical capabilities of the dredging fleet and environmental considerations. Whilst the sand and gravel deposits targeted by the marine aggregate industry are generally relict and therefore geographically fixed, the remaining factors have evolved over time and will continue to do so in future. Applications for new licences must not only reflect the current situation, but anticipate future trends. The main markets for marine aggregates are the construction industry, centred around the larger centres of population and coastal protection projects along the coastline of Europe. The aggregate industry as a whole does not create demand but simply meets it. Many factors influence the overall demand for aggregates and guidance exists for those in authority and industry who need to plan for the supply of aggregates. Adequate supplies should be maintained at the best balance of social, environmental and economic cost, whilst ensuring that extraction and development are consistent with the principles of sustainable development.

In this first sub-seafloor examination of an active hydrothermal system hosted by felsic volcanic rocks at a convergent plate margin, we drilled 13 holes altogether, achieving deep cored penetrations at two sites. Our aims were (1) to delineate the lateral and vertical variability in mineralisation and alteration patterns below the PACMANUS hydrothermal site near the 1650-1700 m-deep crest of Pual Ridge in the eastern Manus back-arc basin, so as to understand links between volcanological, structural and hydrothermal phenomena, and (2) to establish the nature and extent of microbial activity within the system. Technological innovations vital to success included our precise location of holes on small targets with drill-stem video, the use of a new hard-rock re-entry strategy, and deployment of casing with a new hammer drill. Other technical achievements were the first ODP application of an advanced diamond coring system, and the first direct comparison in a hardrock environment between structural images obtained by wireline methods and by logging-while-drilling (resistivity-at-bit).

Radiometric surveys of the beach and nearshore zone of the Dutch Frisian Islands have identified sands enriched in heavy minerals. The areas of heavy mineral concentration have been mapped in detail using a state of the art towed gamma-ray detector, which gives improved sensitivity through the use of new detector materials and improved data processing techniques. The detector provides continuous measurement of sea floor radioactivity (and of a number of other parameters) and can be used simultaneously with other survey techniques, such as echo sounding, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. It enables a rapid, and cost effective, assessment of the surface distribution of heavy minerals to be made. The heavy mineral suite includes magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, rutile and zircon. These minerals contain 1-3 orders of magnitude more U and Th, in terms of their activity concentrations, than the accompanying light minerals (mainly quartz). Since the heavy mineral composition of the sands appears to be relatively constant along the Dutch Frisian Island chain, the U and Th concentrations can be used to provide a quick estimate of the heavy mineral content. The sea floor radiometric measurements allow sediment sampling for more detailed analysis to be highly targetted. The zones of heavy mineral enrichment are generally sub-parallel to the coast and are usually confined to water depths of 5-10 m. There is a close correlation with sand bars on the shoreface, the highest radioactivity typically occurring just seaward of the crest of these features. As well as being used for heavy mineral exploration, similar radiometric methods can be applied to mineral processing. Gamma-ray detection systems can be used to provide rapid analysis in the process stream enabling on-line grade control and optimisation of processing, from excavation of mineral sands to the final products.

A new data set of cobalt-rich ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crust chemistry has been completed for the first detailed sampling of a latitudinal crossing of the Pacific equatorial zone of high biological productivity. Samples were collected in January-March, 1999, during the AVON 2 cruise aboard the R.V. Melville, Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Samples were collected from 4.6° N to 9.2° S latitudes along two ridges, the Marshall Islands-Gilbert Islands ridge (4.6° N to 3.5° S) and the Howland Island-Tokelau Islands ridge (1° N to 9.2° S). The two ridges are offset east-west in the region of overlapping latitudinal sampling by about 466 km. We determined the concentrations of 48 elements for 147 samples from 39 dredge hauls taken on 33 seamounts and island flanks that occur between the Marshall Islands to the northwest and Samoa to the southeast. Element concentrations can be examined as varying spatially and with water depth in the ocean and we examine those relationships based on statistical analysis of the chemical and spatial data. The mean Fe/Mn ratio of 1 and mean Co content of 4645 ppm are typical of West Pacific hydrogenetic crusts; but the mean Co content is low compared to those of some equatorial North Pacific sites, such as the Marshall Islands and Johnston Island EEZs. In contrast, the mean Cu concentration (1540 ppm) is 35% higher than the mean concentration for Pacific Ocean Fe-Mn crusts (998 ppm). Another striking difference is the 40% higher Ba concentrations (mean 3107 ppm) compared to typical Central and West Pacific crusts (mean 1876 ppm); but Ba concentrations are lower than those in California continental-margin Fe-Mn crusts (mean 4085 ppm). A final significant difference in Fe-Mn crust chemistry is Zr concentrations, mean 921 ppm (maximum 1523 ppm), which is about 30% higher in this data set compared to the previously determined mean value of 613 ppm for Central and West Pacific crusts. Zirconium has a strong positive correlation with Ba and a weak positive correlation with Mn.

Within New Zealand?s extended EEZ there exists a vast submarine hydrothermal mineral resource associated with the Kermadec intra-oceanic arc. Along this arc more than thirty submarine volcanoes have been explored by GNS-lead researchers and, of these, c. 60% are known to be hydrothermally active and a site of active seafloor mineralisation. Assessment of whether this mineralisation is economically viable in terms of grade and tonnage is now underway. A key aspect of these investigations is determining the age of the mineralization which will have a direct bearing on its mode of formation, the time elapsed to amass an economic deposit and, ultimately, its capacity for sustainable extraction. Intact barite-rich ?black-smoker? chimneys similar to that depicted here (86 cm long) have been recovered from Brothers volcano in the southern part of the arc. These and other hydrothermal deposits provide evidence of active volcanic massive sulphide (VMS) mineralisation along the arc, the age of which can be determined from the disequilibrium between isotopes within the thorium or uranium decay chains. A chimney from Mariana arc has also been dated using these radiometric methods. The principle dating technique for chimneys up to 15,000 years old uses the decrease in 226Ra/Ba due to radioactive decay after the VMS was deposited. An initial ratio is obtained from chimneys that are proven to be less than 100 years old and this involves dating with 210Pb, 228Ra and 228Th that have short half-lives compared with 226Ra.

Nautilus Minerals is the world leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) resources. The company is currently focused on generating its resource pipeline in the Western Pacific and its first development project for recovery of high-grade copper, gold and silver mineralisation from its Solwara 1 site in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea. The Solwara 1 site is located at a water depth of 1,600 ? 1,800 meters. Over 150 SMS seafloor surface samples have been collected from chimney structures during dives made by remote operated vehicles (ROVs). In order to obtain an understanding of the sub-surface mineralisation, Nautilus carried out 4 drilling programs between 2006 and 2010 which allowed the calculation of a Canadian NI43-101 compliant resource estimate. The initial 2006 campaign was based on conventional offshore surface driven drill equipment. In conjunction with the subsea remote technology industry, Nautilus subsequently developed an ROV operated seafloor drill system with improved drill core recovery and efficiency. This technology was developed further with a 2010 - 2011 drill program to increase the available geological knowledge at Solwara 1 and adjacent prospects. his paper will provide an overview of Nautilus? SMS drilling requirements and recap the evolution of drilling technology and operations undertaken at Solwara 1 from 2006 to 2011. The paper will also discuss the potential of further developments in drilling techniques and equipment to increase or improve drilling depth, efficiency and data quality.

Geochemical exploration for marine placers involves the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of geochemical data. Recent technological advances such as in-situ analysis systems and microcomputers have greatly improved our ability to acquire and process data, but their full benefits cannot be realized until we also develop improved methods for reducing and interpreting large amounts of raw geochemical data. Toward this end, our research has sought to identify existing and/or develop new geostatistical techniques for use in marine placer exploration. Each technique has been tested by evaluating its performance in the analysis of existing data sets. The data sets typically include the results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected platinum and gold placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Results to date indicate that three geostatistical methods (subpopulation partitioning analysis, comparative factor analysis, and end-member compositional factor analysis) are useful in identifying elemental groups which can serve as "pathfinders" in the search for marine placers, and are also helpful in discerning the generic geochemical basis under lying observed statistical correlations between pathfinder elements and placer minerals. Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

Annual metal consumption per capita has increased several orders of magnitude worldwide since the turn of the 19th century, yet grades of terrestrial ores are decreasing as reserves dwindle. Consequently, deep sea metal deposits are gradually transitioning from identified resources to economically viable reserves. Deposits in the Red Sea deeps along the axial trough result from tectonic and local hydrothermal processes. Continental rifting and ocean floor spreading produce fresh oceanic crust; concurrently, seafloor evaporites flow into the spreading zone and form isolated deeps. The deeps are often filled with hot stratified brines maintained by locally discharged fluids during hydrothermal circulation. Metalliferous sediments precipitate from the brines within the deeps. The ongoing multipronged study at KAUST involves: (1) acoustic characterization of the metalliferous accumulations using advanced signal processing techniques that capture the physics of granular materials; (2) comprehensive mineralogical and textural characterization of sampled sediments using SEM, EDS, XRD, XRF, and ICP-OES; (3) multiphysics instruments deployed to measure undisturbed sediment properties in-situ; (4) development of a distributed seafloor observatory for monitoring field operations; (5) innovative concentration and separation technologies; and (6) new strategies for proper tailings disposal purposely conceived for the unique field conditions in the Red Sea deeps.

On the western continental shelf of southern Africa diamonds derived from onshore sources are concentrated in gravels within drowned terrestrial and marine geomorphological features. First discovered offshore in the late 1950's, they are known to exist for about 1400 km along the Namibian and South African coast in water depths of up to 200 m. Shallow water operations yielded 1.5 Mct during the decade ending 1970 when De Beers acquired a majority of the offshore leases and commenced a 15 year exploration program. Deeper water and the prevailing sea conditions required the development of new, unique, marine mining equipment. The first large scale mining production of 22 kct was achieved by De Beers in 1989 with an output of 22 kct. Annual marine output from all sources now exceeds 0.6 Mct worth some US.$ 170 M, and rising to 0.7-0.8 Mct for 1998. Exploration has also been taking place in the waters of West Africa, Australia, and Indonesia. Exploration is by means of high resolution geophysics followed by sampling using a variety of drills, airlifts and seabed-mounted machines which imitate the eventual mining process. Surveying is now probing depths of 500 m. Smaller scale mining by several junior companies has traditionally involved diving and airlift systems. Increasingly, however, they are adopting different and improved techniques which to date have been employed only by De Beers Marine as contractor to Namdeb. Marine exploration and unit mining costs are high compared to those applicable to alluvial deposits onshore. By 1996 the total development costs incurred by De Beers alone reportedly had exceeded US.$ 500 M. However, the financial rewards are commen-surate because of the higher recovered grades. The operations are not without risk for the total of nearly 10 large and medium scale production vessels deployed by various organisations. The greatest shortfalls are experienced in the estimated throughput, not the grade.
