"Two types of metallic deposits have been found in the deep Arctic Ocean: Hydrothermal Fe, Cu, and Zn sulfide deposits form along Gakkel Ridge in the Eurasia Basin and associated ridges between Greenland and Europe; and iron and manganese oxide crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) and nodules, precipitated from seawater onto rock surfaces in the Amerasia Basin, contain many rare metals of economic interest. Fe-Mn crusts and nodules collected in the Amerasia Basin during 2008, 2009, and 2012 cruises on the USCGC icebreaker Healy are characterized by unique mineral and chemical compositions, very high Fe/Mn ratios, fast growth rates, and other unique characteristics compared to those formed elsewhere in the global ocean. These characteristics reflect temporal and spatial variations in geological, oceanographic, and climatic conditions in the Arctic Ocean and surrounding continents over the past ~15 Myr.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSDiscrimination diagrams show that the crusts and nodules found in the Amerasia Basin north of Alaska are hydrogenetic. However, the mineralogy is not typical for hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts and nodules, which usually include only amorphous Fe oxyhydroxide and ?-MnO2 (vernadite). The Arctic samples also include the Mn oxides birnessite and 10Å manganates (todorokite, buserite, asbolane), and the Fe minerals also include goethite, lepidocrocite, feroxyhyte, and ferrihydrite. This mineralogy reflects formation under lower oxygen conditions than typical for samples formed elsewhere.The Amerasia Basin crusts have a unique chemical composition compared with crusts from other areas of the global ocean. The key difference is the high Fe contents relative to Mn contents, which determines the types of trace metals hosted by the Fe-Mn oxide phases, and their concentrations. The high Fe/Mn ratios reflect the expansive continental shelves (>50% of the Arctic Ocean) and upper slopes that support redox cycling and release of Fe and other metals to bottom waters, and to the large fluvial input from North America and Siberia. Brine formation on the shelves and currents promote the distribution of the metals throughout the Amerasia Basin, including the deep basins."

We will look at the commercial requirements of the investment community (debt and equity) in order to provide funding to a deepsea mining project, and contrast this with the position put forward in the draft Exploitation Regulations. We will then recommend suggested amendments to the Exploitation Regulations to assist future investment on this growing industry.

Recently, characterized by fast development high- and nano-technology, demand for rare and trace metals has increased. One of such metals is gallium. Gallium compounds, mainly GaAs, are used in medicine, to manufacture optoelectronic devices, microwave techniques, devices of solar power and infrared optics, etc. The basic gallium industrial deposits are known only on land. There are bauxites (50 ppm), nepheline rocks and ores (36-38 ppm, minerals concentrators are nepheline and sodalite), Zn-Pb-Cu ores (5000-12000 ppm, minerals concentrators are gallite, germanite, sphalerite, bornite), sulphide-polymetallic and Pb-Zn ores (10-32 ppm, minerals concentrators sphalerite, chalcopyrite) (Vershkovskya et al., 1998). High concentration of gallium are observed in hydrothermal massive sulphides of a Mid-Okinawa Trough (The South Chinese Sea) and Sujo seamount (The Philippine Sea) (Noguchi et al., 2007). As it is known, deep-sea massive sulphides and associated Fe-Mn crusts are products of hydrothermal fluid discharge. High-temperature massive sulphides precipitation are the first, and low-temperature Fe-Mn crusts deposition is the last process of hydrothermal mineralization (Cronan, 1982). Hydrogenic crusts and nodules of the World ocean are characterized by low concentration of Ga, close to clarke (19 ppm) (Kobaltbogatye.., 2002). Hydrogenic crusts from the Sea of Okhotsk are exception, because Ga concentrations are exceeded clarke in 3,5 times (Mikhailik, et al., 2009). Complex studying of Fe-Mn crusts from deep-sea basins volcanic seamounts of the Sea of Japan has shown their hydrothermal-sedimentary genesis (Mikhailik, 2009). High gallium concentration (up to 850 ppm) was established in these crusts by ICP-MS (Agilent 7500C). Microprobe research (JXA-8100) of samples Fe-Mn crusts has not revealed the gallium minerals concentrators. It suggests that, gallium in Fe-Mn crusts of the Sea of Japan is sorb substance.

INTRODUCTION In October 2014, on behalf of the French government, Ifremer, along with the International Seabed Authority (ISA), signed a contract to start a detailed exploration program for seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in the work plan located on the slow spreading Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR). The contract has a fifteen-year lifetime and the related exploration program must include the outline of SMS deposits and a resource assessment, as well as detailed environmental base line studies in the contract area. The exploration for SMS deposits generally includes detection of hydrothermal plume anomalies, acquisition of surface and near-bottom geophysical data, sampling operations from the research vessel (e.g. dredges, cores), and dive operations. The environmental studies include, among others, short and long-term oceanographic measurements, water column studies, biodiversity evaluation close and far from SMS deposits, characterization of natural hydrothermal plumes and related sedimentation. The HERMINE research cruise held from March 13th to April 28th 2018 (R/V Pourquoi Pas?) was the first cruise dedicated to exploration of active and inactive SMS and to the quantification of natural chemical input to the water column. The HERMINE cruise strategy was built up around three main objectives: (i) regional exploration including the detection of plume anomalies and the research of SMS deposits, (ii) local exploration of a SMS district and (iii) integrated study of a natural hydrothermal plume. This 3-in-1 cruise required us to optimize the switch between dives and surface operations. Day-time was devoted to dive operations whereas night-time was mostly dedicated to CTD/Rosette operations. The Nautile HOV (Human Occupied Vehicle) was well suited to the working time schedule of the cruise because it was time efficient in shorter (i.e. < 10h) dives due to fast descent and ascent speed, fast submerged forward speed, high maneuverability and the ability to carry heavy science payload as well as large volume of samples. Regional Exploration The first seventeen days of the HERMINE cruise were devoted to regional exploration, i.e. the detection of new plume anomalies and the research of new sulfide mineralization in the French work plan (10 000 km2; 6 clusters).

The discovery of chemosynthetic-based ecosystems at hydrothermal vents in the deep ocean was arguably one of the most important findings in biological science in the latter half of the 20th century. More than 100 vent fields have been documented along the 60,000 km global mid-ocean ridge system. Over 500 new animal species, over 80% of which are endemic to the vents, have been described from this environment. Unusual, highly evolved symbioses between invertebrates and chemolithautotrophic bacteria are common at vents, producing concentrations of biomass that rival the most productive ecosystems on Earth. Hydrothermal vents ecosystems, because of their very limited area and the presence of endemic species, are highly vulnerable to human disturbance. Mining for polymetallic sulphide deposits poses the greatest future physical threat to hydrothermal vents and their biological communities. However, there is more immediate concern about the impact of concentrated scientific research activities. Some sites have been revisited by several research expeditions per year for more than a decade. As vent sites become the focus of intensive, long-term research, oversight organizations are discussing mitigative measures to avoid significant loss of habitat or oversampling of populations. Canada recently became the first national jurisdiction to set aside a hydrothermal vent site as a Marine Protected Area.

Recently, the Korean government prepared a strategy for deep seabed mining, which consists of three stages for 20 years until 2010. The first step of the program is focused to conduct deep seabed exploration until 1993. The apparent "hurry-and-spend to catch-up" policy that the Korean government has shown in deep seabed mineral exploration was motivated by an effort to qualify a prerequisite requirement to be a pioneer investor as a developing country under the terms of Resolution II and the New York Understanding. Since 1983, KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute) under the auspices of the Korean government has carried out deep seabed mineral exploration. The KORDI had a joint exploration program with USGS from 1989 to 1991 aiming to evaluate the potentiality of manganese nodule in the western part of Clarion-Clipperton Zone as well as that of manganese crusts in the western Pacific. In 1992, Korean government accelerates its program by the confirmation of national policy and the equipment of new built research vessel, Onnuri-Ho. The RIV Onnuri-Ho is about 1400 G/T, which is equipped with various advanced instruments including GPS, multi-beam echosounder (Seabeam 2000), multi-channel seismic system, and MDM system.

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. In the quest of studying the assigned blocks of seafloor for deep water mining, each member country of the ISA is thirsty for accurate information as to the level of resources available. Manganese nodules represent a large portion of the resources and are as precious as they are hard to locate and harvest. Resolving such challenges is what drives the technology development and yields instruments and products capable of serving this field of research. This presentation will study how manufactures of oceanographic instruments have pushed the technology envelop to in order to transform a collection of sensors and instruments into a seamless and adapted assembly working to serve the researcher and prospector in the challenging field they operate. Deep water data collection is characterized by the following challenges: ? Deployment, recovery and handling of the vehicle ? Producing high resolution at great distances ? Positioning that data with accuracy to relocate Teledyne Marine will present the work performed in its engineering laboratories to produce sub systems and systems now capable of delivering key information necessary to the proper cataloguing and exploitation of deep water mineral mining. Understanding and controlling the alternative resources available to each country will allow better management of current traditional land based minerals.

"INTRODUCTIONThe majority of studies on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts focus on the adsorption and accumulation of metals, and therefore cations, especially those of economic interest. From these studies, a first-order electrochemical model has been proposed based on the zero point of charge of the manganese and iron oxides at typical seawater pH, which assumes that positively charged ions will bind to the negatively charged manganese oxide phase and neutral and negatively charged ions will bind to the slightly positively charged iron oxide phase (e.g. Koschinsky and Halbach,1995; Hein et al., 2013). While the theory behind this model is sound, and it has been consistent for many elements, other elements may not follow the model (Koschinsky and Hein, 2003), and thus requires additional investigation and validation. As a new approach to understanding element accumulation in ferromanganese crusts and to test the proposed electrochemical model, this study investigates the surface chemistry of the halogens, which occur as negatively charged ions in seawater and have high and consistent concentrations in seawater.ResultsBulk Halogen ConcentrationsTo determine the distribution of halogens in ferromanganese crusts, an initial dataset of 24 FeMn crusts (24 bulk and 19 layer samples) from throughout the global ocean, including the Arctic and the Southern Oceans, has been analyzed for chlorine and fluorine content using ion-selective electrode. Although both Cl and F are conservative in seawater, their content in crusts shows striking variability (Cl: 326 - 13310 ppm; F: 146 – 1048 ppm for non-phosphatized crusts) and has no obvious geographic relationship to ocean basin and no correlation with water depth, latitude, or longitude. We plan to have bromine concentration data to present at the time of this conference."

Large scale, profitable, offshore mining of cassiterite started in 1907 around the coast of south Thailand and continues today in Indonesia. The more complex marine mining of diamonds commenced in the early 1960?s and is now an established industry off the coast of Namibia in southern Africa. The activities have involved many diverse organisations, and have required the development of new marine mining equipment. De Beers Marine, more recently as contractor to Namdeb, has been the dominant producer since 1989. Smaller, public, mining companies, registered in South Africa, Canada and the U.K., have achieved mixed performance results, but the total annual revenue from offshore diamonds now exceeds about US$ 180 M. With the benefit of hindsight, there are some useful lessons to be learned from the experiences. Mining of placer deposits at sea is more difficult and more costly than on land. It justifiably commences in response to a market demand for a product that cannot be supplied in sufficient quantity from onshore sources, not because the marine resource exists. The high costs can be offset in places by submarine grades so high that they have not been seen on land for a century. Technical and commercial success requires a combination, and a sufficiency, of ore reserves, capital, experienced people, and technology. Economic viability is not achieved easily and some diamond mining companies have experienced a very short productive life, terminating in their acquisition or liquidation. The reasons for failure in marine mining, regardless of whether the product is diamonds, gold, or tin, invariably are similar and fall into two categories. Those outside a company?s control include the sea conditions, taxation and fiscal climate, security of lease tenure, and the diamond market. The others, assignable to the company, provide important instructions for those who may aspire to advance the cause of marine mining.

Development of a deep-sea mining system is a new and interesting field of research. Commercial mining of the ocean floor for SMS deposits is yet to occur, and while exploration of the undersea has been undertaken by various research institutes exploitation of SMS deposits is yet to be investigated in detail. Industry has been stimulated by the potential development of economically viable deep-sea mining methods. The establishment of deep-sea mining production has also been encouraged by industry trends. These include the success of the oil and offshore diamond industries, scientific advances in computer modeling, technological advances in undersea exploratory equipment and further development of the Law of the Sea. This project also presents an opportunity to build on UNSW?s established reputation, positioning the Mining Research Centre as a leader in this specialized field of research. This project aims to form a greater understanding of the environmental conditions associated with SMS deposits, detailing the physical, biological and chemical characteristics of typical ocean floor sites from an environmental management perspective. With the aid of previous numerical models and disturbance experiments that have been conducted at various ocean floor sites worldwide, new virtual reality models will be developed to enable assessment of the environmental impact of the undersea mining process. These models will simulate seafloor systems prior to mining through various stages including particle distribution and sediment disturbance, to illustrate the impact of a number of proposed mining techniques. The model will allow users an interactive virtual experience of a potential SMS deposit site where hotspots can be identified and mining processes can be demonstrated. This initial baseline model will help to establish generic parameters, which can then be modified and tailored to simulate a wide range of deposit sites and differing mining processes. These models will be validated with the development of appropriate physical modelling.

The Government of India started its deep seabed exploration programme during 1982. This programme was started as one of national importance and several national laboratories were involved to realize the development of requisite technologies for deepsea mining and processing. After a concentrated effort on surveying, using its own as well as hired ships, India succeeded by mid 1980s in identifying a prospective site in the Indian Ocean as an exclusive claim for development. India was registered as a Pioneer Investor and became the first country to obtain this status on 17th August 1987. India has been allocated an exclusive mine site of 150,000 km2 in the Central Indian Ocean. Our country also developed considerable expertise in the metallurgical processing for extracting metals from these nodules. The Department of Ocean Development, Government of India, the organization which is designated as the nodal agency responsible for implementing the deep seabed mining programme has drawn up a long term plan which will enable it to fulfill its obligations as a Pioneer Investor. The work toward the design and development of a mining system has been entrusted to the Central Mechanical and Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur. As a part of this programme they have developed a nodule collector and a riser system which have been tested in very shallow waters only. Since this technology development for deep sea mining applications is highly time consuming and very expensive, this programme is also being used to develop components for intermediate applications. In view of the long timeframe required for perfecting a deepsea nodule mining technology, the Government of India is also keen on developing shallow water mining systems for utilizing the placer deposits. One of the richest heavy mineral deposits in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone is available on the west coast of South India in the state of Kerala. The coastal stretch between Kanyakumari, on the southern tip of India, and Alleppey along the west coast at a distance from the tip of approximately 210 km, there is a good multimineral reserve. The initial survey indicates that the estimated reserves in the surveyed areas are approximately as follows: Ilmenite 1.4 million tonnes Rutile 0.14 million tomes Zircon 0.13 million tomes Sillimanite 0.53 million tonnes

Since 2013, GSR has undertaken 4 exploration campaigns, which focused on environmental baseline monitoring (marine biology), resource definition and technological change. The seabed nodule collection vehicle has a significant influence on the achievable production rate and is for that reason thought to be a serious risk in developing an economical viable mining operation. GSR is currently working on a pre-prototype of a seabed nodule collection vehicle. The program, called ProCat, started in 2015 and will take up to end of 2019. ProCat can be split up in 2 phases: ‐ ProCat#1 [2015 – Q2 2017]: separate parallel testing of the nodule collection- and driving mechanism (Tracked Soil Testing Device Patania I – TSTD Patania I). The trafficability was tested in-situ; the collection mechanism was tested in a laboratory. Phase 1 has been completed successfully in September 2017. ‐ ProCat#2 [Q3 2017 – end of 2019]: the knowledge acquired during the first phase was used in this 2nd phase. Both collection mechanism and driving mechanism were integrated into the design of a pre-prototype seabed nodule collection vehicle (Pre-Prototype Vehicle Patania II – PPV Patania II). This pre-prototype vehicle will be used for a simulated mining test in Q2 of 2019 in the GSR- and BGR license area. The main objective of the ProCat research program, and especially the 2nd phase, is to integrate the nodule collector on the tracked chassis and develop an operating vehicle causing minimal environmental impact hereby validating the requirements for a full scale polymetallic nodule collection vehicle in the actual operational environment of the CCFZ. Following the ProCat project, GSR is working towards a system-integrated mining test once exploitation regulations have been agreed by the ISA and its member States.

Based on geochronological data it was confirmed that hydrothermal discharge has an episodic character: active and inactive periods of the seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) formation alternate (Cherkashov et al., 2017). There is an assumption of correlation of the periods of magmatic and hydrothermal activity with the stages of glaciation (Lund et al., 2016). During the cold periods, the level of the ocean was reduced from 70 to 150 m depending on the glaciation scale (Spratt, Lisiecki, 2016). As a result, the hydrospheric pressure on the upper mantle decreased and could provide increased magmatic and hydrothermal activity (Lund, Asimow, 2011). This assumption is confirmed by the correlation of warming and cooling stages with increasing of hydrothermal input to the bottom sediment near hydrothermal fields. According to data (Lund et al., 2014, 2016; Middleton et al., 2015) the peaks of hydrothermal activity, expressed in the layers of metalliferous sediments at the East Pacific Rise and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, roughly correspond to the last two periods of cooling (20 and 60 ka). To test this hypothesis, we tried to compare the sequence of warm and cold periods in the Pleistocene with the dating of SMS reflecting the periods of hydrothermal activity. Results SMS samples were obtained from 12 sites within the Russian Exploration Area at the MAR segment 12-20°N. The results of dating 198 samples by the 230Th/U method demonstrated the absence of correlation between hydrothermal activity periods in different hydrothermal fields (Cherkashov et al., 2017). It was proposed that each field has its own evolutions scenario. Considering this point, only the oldest SMS dating for each field which fixed the beginning of hydrothermal activity was selected for comparison with the cold/warming periods.

The southern shoreline of Monterey Bay, extending from Moss Landing to the Monterey Peninsula, consists of sandy beaches backed by an extensive Flandrian and pre-Flandrian dune complex. This length of shoreline, proximal to areas of urban expansion, is currently being considered for development. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand the variability of beach and dune position along this stretch of coast through time. Previous studies of southern Monterey Bay have documented relatively high erosion rates of 2-8 ft/yr due to a net deficit in the sand budget. Although the sediment transport system in this region is not well understood, estimates for the sediment deficit in southern Monterey Bay range from 200,000 to 1,500,000 yd3/yr. A possible cause of the erosional regime in the southern bay is the removal of sediment by coastal sand mining operations. Based on agency reports and mining permit applications, approximate volumes of sand removed by mining range from 300,000 to 450,000 yd3/yr. These volumes are significant when compared with estimated values for the sediment budget deficit. The sand of southern Monterey Bay, a valuable commercial resource because of its hardness, roundness, amber color and range of usable grain sizes, has been removed from the surf zone, beaches and dunes of Marina and Sand City by four companies since 1906. Information regarding the cross-shore location of sand removal and the exact amounts of sand removal through time is proprietary and poorly documented. However, records documenting the time at which each company commenced and terminated mining do exist. This information suggests that the greatest amount of sand was removed between 1950 and 1968 when three mining companies were operating concurrently.

The face of mining as we know is changing as mining companies all over the globe realize the reality of accessing the vast mineral wealth contained on, and under, our ocean floors. With some land based mineral deposits being fully exploited across the world, deep sea mining is set to revolutionize global approaches to the search for precious metals and other sought after minerals. Previously, the financial and technological implications of deep sea mining outweighed the benefits of access to the mineral rich deposits identified all around the world. The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950s, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business.

The particles that make up the deep-sea sediments have two main sources: 1) those that are created in situ from dissolved components and 2) those that are washed into the ocean in solid phases from the continents, atmosphere, space and interior of the Earth. Many particles as they sink through the water column reaches the seabed and are known as pelagic sediments with terrigenous, biogenic, authigenic, and cosmogenic components. Among the minerals found in the terrigenous fraction of pelagic sediments are quartz, clay minerals, feldspar, micas, ferromagnesians, and the biogenic fraction with remains of siliceous organisms, such as, radiolarian and diatoms. The chemical nature of marine sediments is controlled by the contribution of particulate matter derived from various sources with varying compositions for the fixing of elements during deposition and the compositional changes carried out within the sediments during diagenesis. In the last decade there have been several studies on the mineralogical composition of seabed sediments, suspended particulate materials and cores, together with paleontological and geochemical data are used for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions, analyze changes in sea level, stratigraphic correlations and identify past and present sources of sediment and terrigenous input pathways and to describe the current ocean mass (Martins et al., 2001, Oliveira et al., 1998). There is also a scientific and economic interest in the authigenic fraction of pelagic sediments formed from other materials for polymetallic nodules. The study of sediments associated with polymetallic nodules helps to know the genesis, evolution and occurrence of these deposits (De Koven et al., 2003, Dubinin et al., 2008).

"The Atlantis II Deposit comprises metalliferous sediments (Zn+Cu+Ag+Au) accumulating in a composite, axial basin, 2,000m beneath the surface of the Red Sea. The basin contains warm, highly saline water. It is located approximately half way between Jeddah and Port Sudan within the Exclusive Economic zones of Saudi Arabia and Sudan. The Deposit was discovered in 1963 and evaluated by drilling in the 1970s and 1980s. This phase defined an initial resource of approximately 90Mt. More recent estimations have refined this figure to an Inferred Resource of approximately 80Mt (CIM compliant).The Mining Licence to develop and extract the Atlantis II Deep Deposit was granted to Manafai International Trade in 2010 by the joint Saudi-Sudanese Red Sea Commission. Manafai is poised to embark on a renewed phase of exploration and evaluation, including the completion of a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) and leading to the successful exploitation of the Deposit in a safe, environmentally sound, economically viable and socially responsible manner.The Deposit is forming in a complex basin adjacent the median rift, where sea floor spreading has operated during the last 5Ma. It is a Hydrothermal-sedimentary Deposit. The mineralised sedimentary rocks rest directly on sea floor basaltic rocks. They are produced by the exhalation of metal-rich, hydrothermal brines from fissures associated with the central rift and cross-cutting fracture zones. Up to 25m of metal-rich sediments have accumulated over an area exceeding 57km²."

Deep sea mining of manganese nodules actually will have an environmental impact to the seafloor and to the water column. However, we are far from being able to predict the possible consequences. Therefore, in 1992 environmental studies were conducted with the R/V Sonne in a manganese nodule field of the Peru Basin. The bathymetry of the seafloor was mapped using the hydrosweep system and the distribution and type of sediments were investigated by the parasound system and by collecting surface samples and sediment cores. Deep towing of a side-scan sonar system revealed a Mn encrustation of sediments and a nodule coverage of variable density. Along the tracks of a photo sledge a great variability of bottom fauna and of bioturbation was observed. Bottom-mechanical investigations of surface-near sediments were completed on board. Additionally water samples were collected near the sea floor to determine character and amount of dissolved and suspended particles. Manganese nodules and crusts were collected at 80 locations. In many aspects the nodules differ from those of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone: Big cauliflower-shaped nodules with growth rates up to 160 mm/ Ma may reach a maximum size of 24 cm in diameter, maximum abundance may be 44 kg/m2, the mean size of buried nodules is greater than that of surface nodules. The reason for that difference is due to the relatively high bioproductivity in surface waters and to a Mn redox boundary in the sediment column 10 cm below the seafloor. Histograms of nodules showing the distribution of size and growth type clearly indicate that the growth history is different for basins, slopes and tops of seamounts and ridges. Nodules with diameters >7 cm show mainly diagenetic and to a minor degree hydrogenetic growth. Smaller nodules of the same assemblage are composed mainly of hydrogenetically grown Mn oxide. The optimum diagenetic growth occurs within the sediment immediately above the Mn redox boundary, a level which is not reached by the small nodules.
