Pyrite is the most abundant sulfide gangue mineral in copper porphyry ores. In spite of addition of lime in large quantities to depress pyrite in flotation, considerable amount of this mineral is reported to concentrate, particularly in rougher and scavenger stages. With the Sarcheshmeh pit advancing to a greater depth and reaching to the hypogene zone, the amounts of pyrite and chalcopyrite in the feed are increased. Hence, a reduction in the copper grade and increase in the sulfur content of the concentrate are observed. In this study the effective factors on the pyrite floatability at the circuit flotation was considered at Sarcheshmeh Mine. Mineralization zones in the pit were firstly identified. Then, sampling points were located using GPS system. On the basis of mineralogical composition and morphology, the ore was categorized into five main classes. In this classification the amount of lead and zinc and also pyrite locking with other minerals were analyzed. The study of polished section indicated that inclusion in pyrite was very frequent in all classes, mostly composed of the floatability of pyrite. Flotation tests were performed on the samples of different classes at pH of 11.8 after conditioning time. It was shown that, pyrite floatability was decreased with a decrease in the lead content of the feed samples except for the second class, while for all classes an increase in zinc content contributed to a decrease in pyrite floatability and recovery. It was found that, the lowest pyrite recovery (1.89%) was corresponding to pyrite–molybdenite dominant mineralization with Zn of 0.33% and the highest recovery (86.89%) corresponding to pyrite vein dominant mineralization with Zn equals to 0.9%.

"Stirred media mills have proved to be more energy-efficient than the conventional ball milling for fine grinding applications. The mill performance is governed by a number of operating variables including mill stirrer speed, feed particle size, solids content and slurry rheology. A study was conducted to assess effects of mill speed, media size and density, and slurry density on the Stress Intensity (SI) in a VXPmill and thereby the relationship to mill performance. For the mill speeds tested, it was found that the optimum tip speed is 7 m/s. If the speed is too high (12 m/s) energy losses result due to mechanical friction losses and heat generation. If the speed is too low (3 m/s), the kinetic energy is not sufficient to promote breakage. The size reduction ratio increases with the increase in mill speed and the decrease in solids content especially in the coarse fraction particle sizes. The effect of slurry rheology on mill performance was shown by assessing the effects of increasing solids concentration and decreasing particle size. Rheological effects seemed to interact with mill speed such that the mill was less energy-efficient at higher solids content and at higher mill speeds particularly for grinding to fine particle sizes. In presenting this paper for discussion at the Western Annual Meeting to be held in Edmonton, it is with the idea of creating a full and general discussion by the mining men in the Province as to the best way to eliminate, or at least hold down to a minimum, the dangerous coal-dust which is made in mining pitching seams in our Alberta mines by the chute method. Also, an alternative method is outlined, whereby the percentage of lump-coal mined can be increased, and the mining costs reduced-although the paper does not go into any detailed consideration of costs. The general trend of mining practice and lay-outs is at present towards mechanization, and the results being accomplished by the substitution of machines for manual labour are fully justifying the changes. In the technical mining journals, there are published from time to time papers dealing with a variety of methods of mining, which are descriptions of actual operations, and a great deal of interesting and valuable data is given as to the comparative values of the different methods, insofar as the percentage of grades of coal produced, the cost of production, etc., are concerned; but the mechanical methods described in these papers are nearly always suitable only for flat seams, or seams with a very low inclination.

"INCO Limited operates eleven under-ground mines in the Sudbury area. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 km and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55 000tonnes per day.Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960s. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 m3/sec. to 330 m3/sec., with motors from 100 hp to 2500 hp.Fans of the axial flow type have been commonly used for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages.The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter that of a horizontal fan of the same capacity (Rutherford, 1957). This is not a problem with isolated fans and fat surface out crop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly flavour vertical fans."

This paper deals with the use of a cement-deslimed mill tailings mixture for a scraping floor in cut-and-fill stopes at Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines Limited. It describes the mixing and placing procedures and the precautions used with respect to the floor while mining in the stopes. Details of the mix are presented, and advantages and disadvantages discussed. The paper concludes with a brief outline of the costs.

"The Drumbo Mine is a new gypsum mine located at exit No. 32 of Highway 401 between Woodstock and Kitchener, Ontario. The flat-lying 6-foot (1.8-metre) bed of gypsum is near the base of the Silurian Salina Formation, about 380 feet (116 metres) below surface. The mine is owned and operated by Westroc Industries Limited. A shaft, 12.5 feet (3.81 metres) in diameter, was drilled and then lined with a liner-sinking technique new to this continent. The shaft was completed in the fall of 1977. Gypsum production was started in December 1978, employing a conventional room - and - pillar method of mining.Historical BackgroundA brief mention of gypsum in the Drumbo area is included in a survey of the Ontario gypsum industry by Guillet. This occurrence was discovered in 1958 when National Gypsum conducted some widespread diamond drilling. Western Gypsum Products Limited acquired leases in 1960 and concentrated a drilling program in Blenheim Township near the village of Drumbo; 79 holes were drilled in an area of 1900 acres (770 hectares). Mining rights were then acquired for 170 0acres (690 hectares). A test shaft, 44 inches (1.1 metres) in diameter, was drilled to obtain a 50-ton (45-tonne) bulk sample. This opening will be used as an emergency escape way and for ventilation.Westroc Industries Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of BPB Industries, has its head office at Mississauga, Ontario and operates gypsum board plants at Mississauga, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Montreal. During fusion welding of aluminium alloys, the avoidance of defects (such as porosity, oxides, hot cracking, undercutting) as well as the ability to optimize the microstructure-property characteristics in the assembly are critical for the stringent manufacturing specifications in the aerospace industry. In this work, aluminium alloy (AA) 2024 was electron beam welded autogenously as part of a study to determine the influence of parametric conditions on the characteristics of the heat affected and fusion zones to obtain optimal welding conditions. In particular the evolution in the weld geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties were examined as function of the processing conditions, including beam current, beam focus, beam oscillation, linear heat input and welding speed. For optimized parametric conditions, microstructural examination of the joints revealed narrow fusion and heat-affected zones comprising of dendritic structures without the occurrence of defects that enabled a maximized joint efficiency.

The presence of helical ribs in smooth-bore round pipe results in the transport of granular solid particles m water at a much lower velocity than required to transport the same solids in a smooth pipe. The helical motion imparted to the flowing mixture effectively returns settled solid particles to the main stream. The flow may be stopped and restarted without difficulty. Due to the lower velocity required for satisfactory transport large power savings are realized. Also: due to lower velocity, the wear on the pipe walls is much reduced. For satisfactory performance, the ribs should have a high angle relative to the long axis of the pipe and the lineal spacing between adjacent ribs should be modest.

"A brief history of the development of the Kivcet flash smelting process is presented. The broad scope of the process with an ability to treat high grade lead sulphide concentrates, as well as oxidized lead-zinc residues, is emphasized. Fine coal in the charge serves two purposes, one as auxiliary fuel and the other as a pre-reductant for ferric iron in residues. Current Kivcet operations incorporate a layer of coke or “coke checker” at the surface of the slag in the reaction shaft that acts as a reducing agent for flame products or slag that flow through it. Details of this invention, are given. IntroductionFor many years, the sinter-blast furnace lead smelting process has been the main internationally accepted method used for the production of primary lead metal. In recent times, this process has been unable to meet legislated environmental restrictions and it became clear in the mid-1960s that a new and cleaner process would have to be developed. The present level of Kivcet performance was developed in three main stages:1. flash smelting natural sulphide lead raw materials with the attached electric furnace for production of lead bullion and crude zinc;2. natural raw material smelting with lead and zinc separation in a “coke filter” or “coke checker” at the surface of the slag in the reaction shaft to produce lead bullion and ZnO-bearing slag that can be fed to conventional slag fuming; and3. processing of oxidized lead-bearing raw materials, such as low grade zinc plant residues, with the production of lead bullion and ZnO-bearing slag periodically directed to slag fuming."

Emission of perfluorocarbon gases, CF4 and C2F6, produced during anode effects from aluminum electrolytic cells are a significant part of the total equivalent CO2 emitted by aluminum plants. With the current concerns about global warming, the reduction of these PFC gases is a key issue in reducing greenhouse gases for a smelter and achieving GHG emission agreement goals. This paper will present the approach taken by the Alcoa vertical-stud Soderberg plant in Baie-Comeau to reduce GHG emissions generated during anode effects and close emission gaps with other Alcoa Soderberg plants. The approach has been to adapt the existing technology in place at the Baie-Comeau Soderberg plant. PFC emissions were lowered by reducing both the anode effect duration and frequency through different methods. Examples of change include: implementing skimming practices and wider side crust break area for better alumina dissolution in bath, increasing the ratio between reacted and pure alumina, reducing the time to declare anode effects in the potrooms, implementing best work practices and finally educating the workforce on the importance of reducing PFC emissions.

General Statement In July, 1948, experimental aerial photography o shallow water zones on Northumberland strait was carried out by the Nova Scotia Research Foundation. This work was designed to test the feasibility of aerial photography for coastal surveys o various types, including seaweed and bottom detail surveys. In the course of the work at Lismore, undersea faulting was noted visually and was later clearly apparent in the photographs. In order to prove beyond doubt that the lineations photographed are actually faults, a ground check was made, and terrestrial stereoscopic photographs were obtained of these features where they intersect the shore line. There can be no doubt of their nature, and the type of faulting is probably thrusting due to compressive forces. This is indicated by the successive right- and left-hand displacements on intersecting faults. The age of the fracturing is post Lower-Pennsylvanian (Lismore) and is correlated with similar compression faulting in western Cape Breton. As far as can be ascertained, this is the first time that subsea faulting has been photographed, though it is quite possible that similar structures have been observed elsewhere. Location and Area Lismore is on Northumberland strait, approximately thirty-five miles east of Pictou (see index map, Figure 1). The area mapped from aerial photographs (Figure 2) is a strip approximately two miles long by a quarter of a mile wide. Figure 3 shows a stereo-pair of the aerial photographs used to construct this map. The terrestrial stereoscopic photographs (Figure 4) show one of the faults.

"Removal of cobalt, strontium or cesium ion from the aqueous solution containing each metal ion only using microorganism was examined. Arthrobacter nicotianae which had a high ability to remove cationic metal ion was used for the removal of each metal. The removal of cobalt, strontium or cesium using A. nicotianae cells was affected by the solution pH, concentration of metal ion, and cell amount. The effects of above mentioned factors on the removal of each metal and time course of strontium from the solution containing each metal only using A. nicotianae cells were reported in this paper. INTRODUCTIONRadioactive elements, such as cesium, iodine, strontium, plutonium, barium, cobalt, lanthanum, yttrium, and tellurium, were detected around Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was damaged by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and the tsunami followed.The removal of radioactive elements from contaminated sources is a worthwhile subject to investigatein terms of environmental control. Research efforts have been especially concentrated on studying microorganisms that remove uranium including bacteria (Andres et al, 1993, Hu et al, 1996, Marques et al, 1991, Strandberg et al, 1981), actinomycetes (Byerley et al, 1987, Friiss and Myers-Keith, 1986, Golab et al, 1991), fungi (Byerley et al, 1987, Galun et al, 1983a, Galun et al, 1983b,Tsezos and Volesky, 1981, White and Gadds, 1990) and yeasts (Strandberg et al, 1981, Schmate II et al, 1978).We have investigated removal and recovery of uranium from aqueous systems using microorganisms isolated from uranium mines. We identified some strains of bacteria with extremely high uranium removing abilities (Sakaguchi et al, 1996), and thus, the microbial biomass may be considered as an adsorbing agent for the removal and recovery of uranium and heavy metals present in aqueous systems around Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.In the present study, we screened various species and strains of bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, and yeasts for their ability to adsorb uranium (Tsuruta, 2002). Basic features affecting uranium adsorption?co-existing cations and anions, cell amounts, pH, and the adsorption time course?by Arthrobacter nicotianae cells, which adsorbed the largest amount of uranium, were also investigated. In addition, we examined the removal of an other actinoid element, thorium ion, which may be present with uranium in refining effluents.In this paper, the removal of cobalt, strontium, or cesium from the solution containing each metal ion using A. nicotianae cells is discussed."

Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is a severe plastic deformation process for achieving ultrafine grains in metallic sheets without changing the sample dimensions. In this study, ARB process was carried out on 5083 aluminum alloy sheets up to 6 cycles. In this process, the surfaces of the strips to be joined are roughened and cleaned and then stacked. After stacking, the specimen is roll-bonded by rolling using a 50% reduction. The rolled specimen is cut into two halves, and the above-mentioned procedure is repeated for several times. Microstructural characterizations were analyzed by transmition electron microscopy (TEM). Tension and Vickers hardness tests were performed on produced sheets for evaluating their mechanical properties. Moreover the texture parameter of the ARB-ed samples was calculated using their XRD patterns and the related equation. Additionally, the texture evolution during the ARB process was demonstrate by analyzing the measured pole figures and orientation distribution functions (ODF) and skeleton lines. The results indicated that at the early stages of ARB process, grains were subdivided by deformation induced boundaries. After several ARB cycles continuous recrystallization resulted in a microstructure covered with small recrystallized grains with an average diameter below 100 nm at the end of four cycle. Texture analysis revealed fiber textures have been discovered with continiuose of the ARB process cupper. Brass, S and dillamor textures identify which their differences are in intensity of ARB process. Results indicated conformity between mechanical evolutions and texture evolutions during ARB process.

As outlined within the Denison Mines Corp’s (“Denison”) Pre-Feasibility Study ("PFS") completed in late 2018, additional work is required to increase confidence and reduce risk associated with the application of the In-Situ Recovery (“ISR”) mining method at the Phoenix deposit, located on the Wheeler River Uranium Project (“Wheeler River” or the “Project”) in northern Saskatchewan. The successful application of ISR in any geological environment largely hinges on three fundamental requirements, 1) permeability (of the deposit), 2) containment (of the mining solution) and 3) leachability (of the mineralization). Denison has designed several staged technical programs to progressively reduce risk associated with these requirements as the Company advances the Project toward a Feasibility Study (“FS”) and Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”). This paper will discuss the scope and results of certain technical programs being undertaken as the Company aims to develop the first ISR mining operation in the Athabasca Basin.

In order to clarify the failure mode, fracture surfaces after tensile tests were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that at the early stages of ARB process, grains were subdivided by deformation induced boundaries. After several ARB cycles, lamellar structure elongated in the rolling direction contains lamellar boundaries was formed. With increasing the strain, mean spacing of lamellar boundaries decreased. Finally, continuous recrystallization resulted in a microstructure covered with small recrystallized grains with an average diameter below 100 nm at the end of four cycle. The tensile strength and hardness of the 6 cycle ARB processed 5083 aluminum alloy sheet increased about two and three times of the initial values, respectively. Results indicated conformity between mechanical evolutions and microstructural changes during ARB process. Fracture surfaces observations showed that failure mode in ARB processed aluminum is shear ductile rupture with elongated small dimples.

Stainless steels such as 316L or 304 are normally relatively resistant to attack by nitric acid. However research at Sherritt International’s Fort Saskatchewan Operation reveals that when the stainless steel is immersed in an aqueous system in which nitric acid is used to dissolve metals such as cobalt or nickel, the steel can be seriously corroded. Sherritt is patenting a simple process for arresting the corrosion via the use of copper. This process is expected to substantially eliminate corrosion in processes where nitric acid is used to dissolve metals attached to a stainless steel substrate.

New underground mining technology is evolving through the use of large-diameter bore holes containing individually restricted charge weights. This article presents summary observations on cube-root scaling trials using single and rows of charge blasting in sand and in frozen ground. These observations have some bearing on the evolving underground practice, especially where charges of appropriate geometry are used.

"The property of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company; Limited; is in the Wells-Barkerville district of Cariboo mining division. It consists of a group of 106 Crown granted mineral claims and fractions; and extends for over 6 miles along what is termed the Barkerville gold belt. The main portal and mine camp are half a mile south of Wells; which lies at the northeast end of Jack of Clubs lake and is reached by a 55-mile motor road from Quesnel; the northern terminus of the Pacific Great Eastern railway.Gold-bearing quartz veins were discovered on the surface in various parts of the property by different prospectors as far back as 1877, but the work that led to the formation of the present company was performed by Al Sanders in the year 1926. Sanders dug trenches and drove small adits on quartz veins containing gold above what is now known as the Sanders zone. Very little underground work has been done beneath the earliest known discovery-the B.C. vein. The Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company was formed in the autumn of 1926. The federal government kicked off the new budget season in November 1978, when Finance Minister Chretien announced a handful of proposed amendments to provisions of the federal Income Tax Act and Regulations affecting mining. (See Tax Notes in the January 1979 issue of the CIM Bulletin.) Declaring in his budget speech that these changes were in response to the report of the joint federal/provincial task force on resource taxation, Mr. Chretien tossed the ball to the provinces-" I want to take the lead here... I feel confident that the provinces will do their part". Quebec and Ontario, picking up the ball in their spring budgets, have announced favourable modifications to the provincial taxes on mining, with these moves being paralleled in the recent Manitoba budget, which proposes a flatrate mining tax to replace the previous controversial two-tier royalty. In the meantime, the federal government passed a host of amendments to the federal earned depletion regulations. The result is yet another batch of complex tax changes for the industry to note and digest, but this time with the hopeful factor that most of the changes are favourable to the industry. This article reviews the current status of the federal budget changes, comments on the Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba proposals, and reports on the changes to the earned depletion regulations that were passed by Order-in Council in March 1979.
