The Mesozoic intrusive rocks in southeastern coastal China can be divided into three intrusive suites, and they can be brought into corresponding with four cycles of volcanic activity. This paper describes their time-space relation with volcanic rocks, and their geochemical characteristics. Data from the Mesozoic volcanic-intrusive. complex rocks in Eastern Zheijiang, Eastern Fujiang and Eastern Guangdong show distinct regional differences, both within and tectonomagmatic activity regions. The southeastern coast of China involves four tectonomagmatic activity regions. They have many differences on the nature of magma source regions, activity patterns of magma, time-space distribution, petrography and petrographic facies association of volcanic and intrusive rock and mineralization.

SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

Over the last five years Mt Leyshon has matured into a sizeable gold mine by Australian Standards. In the later part of 1990, after commissioning of the 3.5 mtpa CIP Plant upgrade, experience indicated there was potentially additional Mill capacity beyond that being utilised at the 3.5 mtpa rate. Overall throughput was limited by crushing plant performance and high operating costs resulting from the age and condition of the main crushing plant.In addition, mining was being carried out using a mining contractor who utilised relatively small, high cost mining equipment, and on-going exploration success was also indicating that the then current mine plan would result in only a portion of the available resource being exploited.

Pressure hydrometallurgy is becoming an increasingly common unit operation in the treatment of gold and base metal ores and concentrates. The design of an adequate and appropriate pilot-scale testwork program is, therefore, essential in order to minimise the risks associated with developing a project in which autoclaves form a key part of the operation. This paper identifies the approaches that have been taken in the piloting of oxidative and pressure acid leach operations. Particular emphasis is placed on the determination of scale-up ratios between the pilot and commercial plants and the pilot-plant run durations. The issues, both metallurgical and project-specific, that can impact these key parameters are reviewed.

A fundamental study was carried out on super pit sulphidic gold ore to establish the most influential flotation characteristics which were subsequently used in the development of an optimum flowsheet to achieve best economical recovery of gold. In developing the flowsheet, consideration was given to existing operational constraints in the treatment of the Super Pit ore. The fundamental study also included an innovative diagnostic investigation to establish the location and value of gold in the major mineral assembly of the super pit ore from a metallurgical rather than a mineralogical perspective. This study mapped a metallurgical fingerprint of the major types of super pit ore in relation to the location and association of gold.

Gold mining commenced at Telfer in Western Australia in 1977. Ore mining was carried out by owner equipment and personnel with waste stripping by a contractor. Initial ore reserves were in predominantly high grade, geologically simple reef structures. A mining method was developed using dozers to selectively mine the ore bearing horizons with a minimum of dilution. As the mine has developed the simple, high grade ore reserves have been progressively replaced by more geologically complex, lower grade reserves. In turn, mining methods have evolved to extract this ore by the most appropriate methods. On-going attention to ore mining practices will ensure that project profitability and viable mine life are optimised.

Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (e.g. Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northern Mexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids were _10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralization and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralizing solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

As a part of Solid Energy's progressive rehabilitation of the Stockton Mine, it was determined that significant rehabilitation of the existing Mt Frederick Sidecast would be required to ensure the long-term stability of the sidecast. The goal of this rehabilitation is to reshape the existing stockpile into a more stable slope configuration, and the construction of a comprehensive stormwater collection and discharge system. The reconfigured slopes will facilitate the final revegetation of the exposed surfaces and the management of surface and groundwater discharges from the area. This paper briefly describes the specific details of the project and the significance of seismic conditions on the long-term stability of the reconfigured stockpile.

Geomorphology is one of the most basic elements in geographic enviroments. Geomorphological mapping is significant in the spatial distribution of representing land form and understanding various features of geomorphology. Geomorphological mapping began very early in China, as the map, showing conekarst(karst pinnacles) of Juiyishan, Hunan province, it was drawn in 168B.C., which was excavated from Han tomb. Mawangdui, Changsha. Its original idea of map-making is rather similar to that of modern map and could undoutedly be the oldest map of tropical karst discovered in the world.Before liberation, landform mapping was done piecemeally and only a small number of maps were prepared by a few editor as insets.

Tests were carried out on full-size reens in the operating plants to study the Meets of mat aperture size, feed size distri 1,ution, feed rate, screen speed and throw, angle of inclination, and feed moisture content n screen performance. Sampling equipment was signed so that undersize samples could be htained from various locations along the length of the screen, thus providing information pout the quantity and size of particles passing òhro gh the screen at any point. Conclusions derived from the testwork and relevance of these to the Hamersley Iron aeration are discussed.

In early-1989, subsidence due to voids at the top of previously filled stopes and stopes awaiting filling,began to threaten the 15 level fill conveyor horizon. This together with the need to maintain production targets meant that a method was required to significantly increase fill placement.Alternative methods of placing dry fill underground were investigated. One option was to drill 200 mm boreholes from surface directly into stopes 600 - 800 metres underground. A drilling program was successfully undertaken, and resulted in the placement of more than 800 000 tonnes of dry aggregate fill via four boreholes.This paper details the drilling program undertaken and discusses the difficulties encountered, the fill placement system and the project costs.

Integrated geological interpretation of aerial photographs and Landsat images revealed that the gold mineralisation at Kyauk Pahto took place in a narrow zone of tension fractures within part of a previously unrecognised dextral wrench fault system. The latter is the wider manifestation of the well known Sagaing (right-lateral) strike-slip fault which has a length of more than 1 000 km, and it demarcates the boundary between the Indo-Australian and Asian plates. A subtle, right-handed kink affects the full width of the Sagaing Wrench-fault System at about the latitude of Kyauk pahto, and the extra dilatancy imposed on the tension fracture zone facilitated episodic ingress of mineralising hydrothermal fluids by "seismic pumping".

In Australia we usually define "resource" in purely material terms, and rarely relate it to intellect and human capacity. We look at the sheer abundance of our natural resources and are satisfied with the feeling that we don't really need-to rely on using our brains. Certainly our country is fortunate to have the mineral resources it does, but in many ways Australia's worst enemy is its "lucky country" syndrome because we tend to underutilise the great resource we have in the capacities of our people. Raw material exports will undoubtedly continue to contribute a major share of our export revenue, but to harness the riches our country has to offer most effectively we need the vision and planning necessary to bring together our material and human resources. There is a need not only to find, exploit and process our minerals economically, but to turn as much of our mineral wealth as possible into high value products before it leaves the country. In particular we must use our brainpower if we want to maximise economic benefit from and political influence over the strategic minerals which leave our shores. In the past we have been successful in finding and exploiting minerals because our mining industry has been in the forefront of private sector research and development. But if Australia is to have an advantage over other mineral rich countries in insulating itself from the effects of cyclical swings in commodity prices, then the future of the industry must lie even more in technological sophistication rather than depending. on such considerations as size and location of mineral deposits. To survive, our mineral industry must have the foresight and resourcefulness to make its own luck. There are two keys to increased efficiency in exploration and production and in further processing methods: enhancement of the skills of the workforce and continual improvement of R&D.

Over the past 18 months the De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd operations have made a concerted effort to move away from using the traditional shock tube initiating systems. These systems are being systematically replaced by the use of electronic delay detonators (EDD). Various trials were conducted in both host rock and kimberlite rock masses to improve tunnel advance as well as to optimise delay timing during trough openings (Ngoma et al, 1999; Mohle, 1999; Baltus, 2000). The high cost of EDDÆs, when compared with traditional initiation systems, led to a number of detailed studies being conducted on the mines where EDDÆs were being used. These studies aimed to quantify the additional benefits when blasting with electronic detonators. The studies showed that the change was justified on the basis of increased quality control and reliability gained through the use of EDDÆs. However, these benefits attract other related benefits, like fragmentation control, and backbreak reductions. When compared to the shock tube initiating systems the increased development face advance and the reduction of oversize during production blasting using EDDs, compared favourably to the less costly systems. As blasting engineers gained experience and confidence in the use of the system bigger blasts were initiated in mass under-cut blasts and slot raise development, by using multiple hole firing and second delay periods between holes. In the open pit and sublevel open stope mining methods the control of the fragmentation distribution and the effect of the mass of explosive detonated during a blast is detrimental to the loading and hauling production rates and the stability of the rock mass behind the blast. With a stable rock mass the bench cutting can be executed to establish steeper overall slope angles leading to large cost savings due to a reduction in waste stripping. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate through quantification that the use of the EDDs as an initiating system improves all-round blasting performances and assists in meeting customer requirements. The Mary Kathleen uranium deposit is in north-west Queensland, approximately halfway between the townships of Mount Isa and Cloncurry, at long. 1400 009 E and lat. 200 44' S. The deposit Iwas discovered by prospectors of the Walton McConachy Syndicate early in July, 1954, and climaxed a very intensive ground search by hundreds of part-time prospectors. during the uranium boom from March to July 1954ò Numerous small deposits, mostly in the vicinity of Mount Isa, were discovered in various rock environments, but Mary Kathleen is the only large deposit and, apart from a few tons of hand sorted material from the Milo lease, is the only deposit that has been worked. Exploration of the surrounding area, and proving of the economic worth of the deposit, were conducted from the time of discovery until February 1956 by a geological team camped near the deposit. Proving was carried out by drilling a pattern of vertical and inclined diamond drillholes at fifty-foot centres over the outcrop. An adit was driven eastwards through the deposit. Metallurgical research and design work in the South Australian Department of Mines Adelaide Laboratories were based on core samples and bulk samples from the deposit. The signing of a contract in March 1956 with the British Atomic Energy Authority to supply 4500 short tons of uranium oxide allowed mining to commence, and enabled the planned construction of water supply, township and treatment plant to proceed. The open out mine and plant are now serviced by a modern township, four miles away, which is connected to Cloncurry and Mount Isa by road. Although little field work has been done since the exploration phase, this paper differs in interpretation from a previous paper (Matheson and Searl, 1956) in that it is based on a revised structural inter- pretation (Compana, 1958), detailed mapping of progressive exposures in the open out, and a re-examination of diamond drill cores.\

The adsorption of gold cyanide by the weak base ion exchange resins, PAZ-4¦ and Duolite A-7C, the neutral polymeric adsorbent, Amberlite XAD7¦, and the strong base resins, PAZ-8~a and IRA-400 have been studied in both low and high salinity waters, and their performance compared with activated carbon. A systematic study has also been made of the effect of different ions (Na+, Cat+, Mgt+, Cl', SO4) ) on the gold adsorption capacity and kinetics of these resins. The results indicate that, contrary to popular belief, the ion exchange resin, can perform effectively in highly saline environments. The performance of the neutral polymeric adsorbent im- proves with increasing salinity but cannot match the performance of the ion-exchange resins.

Haematite Recovery from a Tailings Stream Laboratory and pilot scale testing were carried out in 1999 on a tailing sample from a North American iron ore plant using gravity, magnetic and flotation techniques. The ore contained 16 per cent iron mainly in the fine (-38 ¦m) size fraction. Two methods of evaluating the separation efficiency were used; Selectivity Index and Z factor analysis. Tabling and magnetic separation produced poor results, with flotation testing showing some promise, generating concentrates assaying more than 40 per cent Fe. High grade concentrates containing more than 67 per cent Fe were generated using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig, and it was recommended that this technique be pursued at a larger scale to verify the results obtained.

To reduce the corrosion of a stainless steel crystallizer, caused by accumulation of chloride impurity in the liquor during the crystallization of ammonium sulphate, a strongly basic anion exchange resin in the sulphate form may be used to remove the chloride from the liquor. The spent resin may be regenerated with dilute ammonium sulphate.The ions involved are sorbed by the resin in the order Equation 1. The sorption of chloride from the liquor and the regeneration of the resin depend upon the effect of concentration on the formation of the the ion pair NH6SO4. The sulphate ion dominates sorption from dilute solution of ammonium sulphate containing minor amounts of choride; choride ion dominates sorption from concentrated solution.
