Tin-polymetallic vein type deposits are one of the major source of metal producers in the Circum Pacific Belt. This type of deposit is of great importance for the modem electronics and medical industries because of their high content of rare metals (especially indium and bismuth). We have studied two representatives, Tosham of India (Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W-Ag-Au), and Mount Pleasant of Canada (Zn-Cu-In-Bi-Sn-W), using proton and electron microprobes in order to delineate the distribution of medical/high-tech rare metals. The electron microprobe study showed that major indium carrier in such type of deposit are roquesite (CulnSZ), sphalerite, stannite and a Cu-Zn-Fe-In-Sn-S mineral; and that indium is incorporated in sulfides by coupled substitution like Cu + In = 2(Zn + Fe). The proton microprobe showed that indium at trace levels is also present in chalcopyrite and pyrite. In addition, zinc, copper, arsenic, antimony, selenium, tin, and bismuth are common in chalcopyrite and pyrite. Arsenopyrite contains nickel, copper, zinc, silver, tin, antimony and bismuth. In chalcopyrite and pyrite, zinc, arsenic, indium, bismuth and lead are higher in Mount Pleasant ore, but silver is higher at Tosham. Also thallium and gold were found only in Tosham pyrite. The Tosham deposit is genetically related to S-type magma, while the Mount Pleasant deposit is related to A-type granite. Tosham ore contains zinc-bearing biotites that coexist with chalcopyrite in ore bodies but Mount Pleasant ore lacks such biotite. We propose that the difference in elemental abundance between the two deposits are caused by the different character of source magma and different mineral associations of the ore body.

This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.

The use of compressive crushing equipment such as gyratory crushers within minerals processing plants can potentially generate large quantities of dust. Remedies to this problem include the retrofitting of shrouds, enclosures, local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems and water suppression systems. The single or combined application of these systems must be optimised to ensure they operate efficiently. It is desirable that the future design planning of such facilities include integrated dust suppression and/or removal systems to ensure material delivery rates are maintained and the welfare of the workforce is protected. The characteristic release of dust and the disturbance to the surrounding ventilation airflow is investigated by the construction and solution of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models validated by data obtained from scale experiments. A 3D computational model was constructed using the FluentTM CFD software to represent the background ventilation regime within an underground crushing installation. The falling ore is represented as a continuum granular fluid falling under gravity from the raised bed of the dump truck. Transient path lines are computed to simulate the updraft airflow generated by the tipping process and indicate the dispersion path of any entrained dust. The relationships between the falling ore material, the displaced air and the shear induced flow are determined by an analysis of the computed volume/mass flow rates predicted across the crusher opening. An analysis of the airflow patterns predicted by the CFD simulation models indicates strong shear flows induced between the tipped material and the surrounding airflow in the vicinity of the crusher during tipping, and a strong influence of the background ventilation regime on the path taken by this shear flow. Scale experimental studies were conducted to characterise the induced shear flow and visualise the potential entrainment and transport of dust. An analysis of these experiments is presented.

This paper investigates the problems that are encountered in mining at extreme depths. It looks into the rock mechanic aspects, especially the high stress levels that will occur, and the hazard of rockbursts. Furthermore, environmental problems are discussed, with refrigeration and reduction of neat loads being major methods of maintaining ,sorkable conditions. The paper concludes that it will be of tmost importance to have a planning team of Tne highest quality to ensure that conditions are maintained so that work can be carried out safely and under reasonable conditions.

The eastern part of the Yangtze craton (eastern China ) is marked by a number of medium to small size porphyry Cu-(Au-Mo) deposits. A detailed geochronological study and existing data suggest that these deposits were emplaced in the 144 - 136 Ma interval. They are spatially and temporally related to voluminous mafic and alkaline magmatic rocks ranging in composition from gabbros, syenites, A-type granites and their volcanic counterparts. This indicates that the porphyry Cu-(Au-Mo) deposits in the eastern Yangtze craton were generated in an intra-craton extensional tectonic setting, which is distinctly different from the compressive environment of oceanic or continental arcs of the Pacific Rim where numerous giant porphyry Cu deposits were formed. The Red Dome deposit is located about 15 kilometres by road west of Chillagoe in far north Queensland. The deposit is within a well known band of mineralisation which is adjacent to the Chillagoe - Mungana railway line. Members of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are engaged in locating, extracting, processing, marketing and converting the worldÆs mineral wealth for its consumption in a useful form. We have an ethical responsibility as professionals to carry out our roles in such a way that we seek to optimise the recovery of that wealth for the benefit of the community, not only now, but also in the future. To be able to optimise, we must be able to measure with confidence the value of the commodity through the various stages of treatment from discovery of a geological anomaly to the end use. This introductory paper will provide an overview of some aspects of the issue, including the possible extension of the coverage of The InstituteÆs Codes to production accounting and reporting.

The Palmarejo, Guadalupe and La Patria Silver-Gold epithermal vein deposits occur in south-westernChihuahua state, Mexico. The veins are hosted in a volcano-sedimentary sequence that comprises andesitic to basaltic resedimented volcaniclastic rocks, together with less abundant coherent and pyroclastic facies and minor red-beds. The host sequence is part of the Lower Volcanic Series, and formed in a magmatic arc environment during the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Laramide Orogeny. The Lower Volcanic Series is overlain unconformably by an extensive sequence of Miocene rhyolitic ignimbrites, known as the Upper Volcanic Series. At this time, it is uncertain whether epithermal mineralisation was related to andesitic intrusions (85 Ma) and/or Oligocene rhyolitic dykes (25 Ma). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Recently an inorganic salt, sodium polytungstate (SPT), has become available that allows the preparation of non-toxic solutions of relative densities up to 3.1. It is relatively expensive and at the higher relative densities achievable, highly viscous. Alternative inorganic compounds may in the future be identified that overcome these limitations. The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd (AMIRA) has initiated a project to examine possible alternatives. However, it has been found that by the addition of finely divided ferrosilicon to solutions of SPT, relative densities of up to 4.0 can be achieved. A laboratory technique for density fractionation of sized mineral samples utilising this finding has been developed. This is currently being extended to study the potential applications of such liquids and suspensions in dynamic systems for mineral, coal and recycled waste separations.

This paper addresses the unique environ- mental programmes which prevail at Ranger and their importance in the future profitability, of Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd. (RUM) Industrial relations, general safety, and occupational health have long been regarded as part and parcel of the concept to 'manage for profits'. More recently, the need for environmental protection has also become an important management consideration. This is particularly so at the Ranger Uranium Mine where environmental protection is very closely and continuously regulated. Since the commencement of operations at Ranger some three years ago the company has operated within these regulations and demonstrated clearly that yellowcake can be produced efficiently, economically and safely. The company also recognises that in order to ensure continuity of production, it will have to continue to operate within these strictly supervised Regulations.

The educational system is a dynamic; a flow resource that can be significantly shaped, changed and - refined by educationists. This paper analyses these various facets of geo- science education in Australia. The Australian educational philosophy is essentially a laissez- faire model, a free market approach without any real government or professional directive or stratagem. Students are therefore free to choose their own educational pathway dependent only upon their ability and the access to courses. Geological education at the tertiary level in Australia is described and critically analysed. There is a real need for a rationalisation of geological education in Australia, and this rationalisation should include not only the number of courses offered but should also aim to fully define both the philosophy and purpose of geological education and the accreditation procedures for the Students.

Bacterial leaching of museum grade chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrates at low sorptive relative humidities (55-91 per cent rH) was demonstrated. Optimum release rates were 13 and 27 mg/gram/100 days copper (Cu++) at 91 per cent and 80 per cent rH and 12 and 33 mg/gram/100 days iron (Fe++) at 80 per cent and 73 per cent rH for concentrate and "pure" chalcopyrite respectively. The optimum copper release rates occurred between 73 per cent - 86 per cent rH and 30-40 mM acid concentrations. Bacterial copper leaching rates were some twenty times slower for emersed copper concentrates, at low relative humidity, compared with submerged cultures. Bacterial copper solubilization was almost quantitatively inhibited above 150 mM acid levels (< pHO.8).

Pyrite is a significant gangue sulphide mineral in the Ok Tedi copper ore. Its presence in the flotation concentrate is not entirely desirable since it lowers the grade of the final copper concentrate. Lime depression of the pyrite has been practiced with some success. However, it has been observed that at the pH for pyrite depression a significant amount of the pyrite particles still float. To obtain further insight into the problem this work has been conducted to determine the composition, natural floatability and xanthate flotation behaviour of the various types of pyrite in the ore. The flotation results show that while some types of pyrite float well at high pH values, others are readily depressed. The implications of these results for Ok Tedi flotation plant have been Considered.

The cause of spontaneous combustion of pyritic black shale has been studied by calorimetry and other techniques. The conditions required for ignition to occur are: 1. A critical mass of pyritic black shale. 2. Acidity. 3. Fine shale particle size. 4. A high ambient temperature. 5. The exclusion of air during the preparation of a calorimeter charge. The reaction is characterised by an initial incubation period during which an unknown phase is produced. The build up and oxidation of this phase results in a chain reaction culminating in ignition. The mechanism is believed to involve the interaction of pyrite, sulphuric acid, ferrous sulphate, or meta-stable oxysulphates, with ammonium nitrate. The recommended strategy for prevention of premature detonation is to neutralise the acids in the shale with quick and slow release alkaline materials.

The application of discreet event simulation has matured in modelling manufacturing systems for production analysis. This simulation tool was used in studying a number of mining operations, especially material handling processes. The study of truck-shovel operation including equipment matching, selection, and production estimation utilised the discrete event simulation for providing valuable decision-making information. The sophistication of the available simulation tools grew over times, and simulation driven animation was used to facilitate the validation and visualisation of the simulated system. This form of visualisation enhanced the simulation use greatly. First of all, it provided a communication medium to transfer information to the non-technical managerial personnel as a better decision-making tool. Moreover, the animated visualisation provided a validation tool to check the working of the simulated system and interaction among its components.

The iron ore mining operations carried out by Goldsworthy Mining Limited at Golds- worthy, Shay Gap and Sunrise Hill, in the Pilbara region of the North-West of Western Australia, are unusual insofar as the ore reserves occur in a number of widely separated and relatively small deposits, requiring deep mining below the water table, and even below sea level at the Goldsworthy pit. This paper has been prepared to describe some of the problems associated with these deep open cut mines, and the technology employed to overcome them, in order to provide an efficient and economical operation. The problems discussed are: 1. Development of the Dewatering System for the Goldsworthy Mine. 2. The Stability of Pit Slopes at the Goldsworthy and Shay Gap Mines. 3. Development of Diesel Electric Trucks for Lonq Uphill Hauls.

Over the last thirty years production of heavy minerals from Australian deposits has dominated the world market. The main incentive has been to suoply the raw material for titanium dioxide based pigments. These ~ninerals include ilmenite, rutile, leticoxene and more recently, synthetic rutile. Inevitably the viabilit/ of developing placer type deposits has seen influenced by other heavy minerals present, such as zircon and monazite, but these have been of secondary importance. For most of the sixties and seventies, Australia supplied the 'najority of free world rutile and zircon, and a large proportion of the ilmenite. With the run-down of rutile- rich reserves in eastern Australia, the emphasis has s:iifted in several countries, including Australia, to fill }the gap with i l Wen i to and its derivatives, leucoxene, synthetic rutile and titanium rich slag. over the next 15 - 20 years, as high grade beach placers in Western Australia are mined out, less traditional sources for mineral sands products will be opened up. Low grade placers (particularly those dominated by ilmenite) will be reassessed in Australia, U.S.A., Africa and Asia, and exploration will shift from beach and dune environment, to heavy mineral concentrations in alluvials, lake deposits and continental shelf deposits. At the same time, production of anatase and bastnaesite will be expanded, as required, from the huge resources contained in carbonatites in 3razil, U.S.A. and China.

Iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) systems of the Carajás mineral province (Amazon craton, Brazil) are structurally controlled by regional-scale shear zones and have formed by multiple episodes of fluid circulation and hydrothermal alteration in the Neoarchean (2.71–2.68 Ga and 2.56 Ga) and Palaeoproterozoic (1.90–1.87 Ga).Collectively, fluid inclusion, boron, oxygen and hydrogen isotope data and Cl/Br–Na/Cl ratios in fluid inclusions reveal that regional circulation of non-magmatic brines (eg evaporative fluids/evolved sea water) and mixing with other fluid sources (eg meteoric or magmatic) is an important attribute in the genesis of the Carajás IOCG systems. The ?33S and d34S compositions of sulfides from the Neoarchean and Palaeoproterozoic IOCG systems suggest that the ore-bearing fluids have assimilated sulfur from crustal reservoirs. The Grasberg Mine is a copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and located in the high equatorial mountains of the Indonesian province of Papua. The climate is alpine/subalpine with little seasonal variation in temperature or rainfall. The daily average temperature ranges from about 2¦C to 14¦C and the annual rainfall in the vicinity of the mine and overburden stockpiles is about 4000 mm to 5000 mm. Mining of the Grasberg open pit will continue until 2014 at which time approximately 2750 Mt of overburden will have been produced. Current overburden production rates are 200 Mt per annum. The current mill rate is 230 000 t/day from the Grasberg pit (190 000 t/day) and the underground operations (40 000 t/day). The acid rock drainage (ARD) issues associated with overburden from the Grasberg operations were identified early in the mining operation. Almost all overburden placed to date has been Potentially Acid Forming (PAF). Laboratory testing has identified four main overburden types: limestone and non-acid forming (Green waste), PAF low capacity (Blue waste) and PAF high capacity (Red waste), and Heavy Sulfide Zone (HSZ), which contains greater than 20 per cent pyrite. Waste type block modelling indicates that at least 30 per cent of the overburden production from 2003 to the end of Grasberg pit operations will be limestone. Strategies are being developed to maximise the beneficial use of limestone through strategic blending and placement for ARD mitigation and control.
