The annual growth in lead consumption in the Western world has declined sharply in the past ten years, as lead has suffered a wave of substitution by other materials, and has also been the object of concern about its toxicity in daily applications. Like most metal industries, the lead industry has tended to be more production-oriented than market-oriented than is the case with some of its competitors. However, in recent times this pessimism and preoccupation with weathering the threats from environmental legislation, substitution and low prices appears to have been replaced with a new optimism in some sectors of the industry. This is indicated by renewed promotional activities and efforts to find more applications and market opportunities.

Erosion of unprotected batters, spoil banks, slopes, and stockpiled material creates a multitude of environmental problems. Winds blowing across these denuded surfaces can generate dust clouds capable of depositing un- desirable particulate material a considerable distance from the source. Water eroding these areas continually exposes new surfaces which may be oxidized. Iron pyrites can be dissolved in the flowing water, resulting in the addition of pollutants to streams and water sources. Silting of water sources can also occur as a result of this erosion. Valuable topsoil can be blown or washed away. In addition, the after-effects of erosion leave a visual pollution which is more difficult and expensive to correct than to prevent.

The design and construction of a 2.5 million tonne per annum ship unloading system at the PWCS export coal terminal in Newcastle, NSW, has further increased the flexibility and sophistication of Australia's largest coal export facility. The system comprises a new unloading wharf serviced by a self unloading vessel, conveyor stream and multi compartment ground level storage shed. Coal is reclaimed from this shed by the largest portal scraper ever installed under cover. The system also provides additional flexibility by receiving coal from the existing PWCS road receival to improve scheduling. The PWCS can now simultaneously handle 11 coal types and receive from rail, road and sea at almost 15000 tonnes per hour.

When a major mineral find has been announced the general perception is that a battle between Aborigines and the mining company involved will inevitably occur.It is a fact that many miners in the past have not had a good relationship with Aborigines because of their indifferent attitudes towards them. They saw no common future and went their particular way. However, attitudes have changed significantly since Noonkanbah and both miners and Aborigines are seeking common ground in order to achieve mutual benefits from the establishment of a mine on or near Aboriginal land. There are many obstacles that both miners and Aborigines need to overcome inordertofindthiscommongroundtoachieveawin/win situation. The obstacles can be found in entrenched ideas and practices which need overhauling, not the least of which emanate from government policy and requirements.Without going into specifics, the Noonkanbah incident during the 1970's where Aborigines and their supporters confronted miners who were ordered by the Western Australian governmentto drill on Aboriginal land, polarized Aborigines and miners. Since this incident, many Aborigines, particularly those in the cities, have had the attitude that mining and Aboriginal culture are in direct conflict. Aboriginal opinion is generally shaped in the larger cities through mass media coverage of the opinions of urban Aborigines and their supporters. Through no fault of their own, these Aborigines were removedfromthe land of their ancestors and have notlived atraditional Aboriginal life-style for a number of generations and most have little knowledge of, nor have had involvement in, traditional Aboriginal lore and culture. For the most part these people live in awestern life-style and few still know their language. They generally have high profiles, often giving viewpoints that are wrongly considered "Aboriginal" and supposedly representing all Aborigines. This group is very different with their thought processes and values from those Aborigines who live on their own traditional lands with a traditional life-style, and practise their age old ceremonies. Their tribal values are based in their relationship with the land, expressed through complex religious ceremonial rites of song, dance and legend. Today this group is very much diminished in numbers but nevertheless in the region of the Gulf of Carpentaria there is a high proportion ofpeople who practise their lore, speak their own languages and pass on traditions to their children. It is well documented in the history of Australia that Aborigines have been decimated in numbers and whole tribes have been wiped out. Certainly in this region the experience has been no different.

Radioisotope X-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for on-stream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay. The radioisotope X-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. Specifications on the types and levels of impurities tolerable in metals are becoming increasingly stringent, and are pushing the limits achievable with conventional refining technologies. Particularly difficult is the removal of electrochemically noble elements with low volatilities, such as copper, from more active host metals such as lead, iron and aluminium. Electrochemical refining, utilising the ability of certain solid electrolytes to selectively transport copper or other impurity cations away from the molten host metal into a separate refining phase, may provide an answer to this problem. Numerous studies on solid electrolytes used in concentration sensors have been reported, as well as a limited number on metal refining. Oxygen anion conducting solid electrolytes have been applied to the deoxidation of copper and steel while cation conductors, eg ¯ -alumina and Nasicon materials, have been used to remove lithium and sodium from aluminium. However, solid electrolytes have yet to be applied to the removal of noble elements. The behaviour of solid electrolytes under the extreme conditions of molten metal refining is not well understood. This paper will examine the potential use of solid electrolytes to remove noble metals such as copper from active host metals such as iron. The suitability, and selection criteria of available solid electrolytes for implementation in the metal refining industry in the future will be discussed. In particular, the stability of Cusicon, a copper superionic conductor potentially suitable for use in metal refining, has been assessed and the results of the experiments are presented.

Supergene lateritic iron ores are uncommon when compared with the vast tonnages of BIF-hosted microplaty haematite ores of the world or with the dominant supergene mimetic martite-goethite ores of the Hamersleys. In Australia and to a lesser extent in India and South America, mimetic replacement of gangue minerals by iron hydroxyoxides is a major factor in forming supergene iron ore from banded iron-formation (BIF) and results in the superb preservation of all of the original BIF features. This includes primary banding down to the finest inclusions, as a result of pseudomorphing of the BIF gangue at depth by goethite. The enrichment as a whole is an absolute accumulation of Fe at depth, dissolved from the surface BIF, and a removal of the gangue elements without loss of the original BIF mineral textures. Thus the ores grow upward to meet the downward destruction of the surface BIF by erosion. By contrast the supergene lateritic ores including the 'blue dust ores' are residual ores resulting from the relative accumulation of Fe. In the supergene lateritic ores derived from BIF, removal of the gangue is accompanied by repetitive solution and reprecipitation by secondary haematite and goethite. The final product of lateritisation of BIF and BIF-derived ores is typically complex, due to successive overprinting of earlier stages of alteration during the process, and because of the different precursors. This progressive lateritic modification tends to produce a varied surface complex including massive, vermiform, and botryoidal, or nodular aluminous/siliceous goethite and haematite, variously known as ferricrete, duricrust, canga, or 'hydrated zone hardcap'. The significant difference in these ores to the supergene mimetic martite-goethite ores is that they grow downward, with the total destruction of any of the parent BIF or BIF-ore textures.

Segnit's article puts forward the views that the rocks associated with the Broken Hill lode are simply highly metamorphosed sediments, tbat metasomatism on a large scale was not an important factor at Broken Hill and that the rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.In particular, the garnet quartzite, the most abundant rock in the limited section of the mine examined by Segnit, is described by him as a simple, metamorphosed manganiferous sediment.These views, while consonant with those of H. F. King (1958), are drastically opposed to those of myself and others e.g. Gustafson et al. (1950, p. 1383) who state that the most extensive hydrothermal alteration in the district is in and close to the zinc lodes in the Zinc Corporation and New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. mines. Segnit's conclusions conflict with 1. the absence of any manganiferous sediment in the Broken Hill district except in close proximity to the lode,2. the clear cut metasomatism of the dolerite dykes which indicates that the ore is younger than the dykes and therefore post-metamorphism, and 3. the petrofabric study of den Tex (1958) which provided independent evidence that the ore in its present form post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area.The original sediments of the district were mudstones and calcareous sandstones with 2 to 5 per cent CaO. Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is delineated by the Vitiaz trench to the North (paleo sub duction zone, Brocher, 1985), the Vanuatu is- land arc (called before New Hebrides arc) to the West and South, the Hunter Fiacture Zone to the South-East and the Fiji islands to the East (Brocher, 1985 ; Larue et al., 1982 ; Carney and MacFarlane, 1982 ; Falvey, 1978). The NFB is characterized by shallow water depths (about 3 km) (Chase et al., 1982 ; Scla- ter et al., 1972 ; Karig, 1971), high heat flow (average of 2.29 HFC) (MacDonald et al., 1973 ; Halunen, 1979), strong positive free air anoma- lies (Worzel, 1965 ; Kogan, 1976 ; Luyendick et al., 1974 ; Solomon and Biehler, 1969) and a geoid anomaly (Malahoff and Larue, 1979) inter- preted as a geoid swelling. Few refraction data reveal a relatively thin crust and sediment co- ver, and the existence of low speeds in the up- per mantle beneath the NFB (between 7,1 and 7,7 km/s) (Larue et al., 1982 ; Raitt, 1956), which could indicate the existence of active spreading zone(s) in this area (Barazangi et al., 1974). Global seismicity of the SW Pacific clearly de- fines the.limits of the NFB, as well as the Lau basin (Sykes et al., 1969). But one can note the low level of shallow seismicity of the NFB (Ham- burger and Isacks, in press) which concentrates in three distinct trends :

The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

Large scale rhyolitic volcanism is an important process at some convergent plate margins because it leads to chemical differentiation of the upper.-crust and is responsible for the production of long lived near surface thermal anomalies; the Taupo Volcanic Zone is.a Quaternary example. The main features of the magmatic systems-of the zone. are the existence of large high level chambers containing homogeneous silicic magma which erupt at intervals of thousands to tens of thousands of years. Geochemical work on the deposits resulting from these eruptions has shown that with few exceptions the magmas have been remarkably uniform in their . composition throughout the history of the zone although individual batches with lifespans of the order of. one hundred thousand years can be recognised by subtle differences in trace element ratios. Basalt is a rare proportion of the rocks exposed at the surface but has played a major role as a medium for heat transfer and as an end member in chemical mixing processes.

Techniques for the optimisation of open pit design and development are now accepted as standard practice in the mining industry. These techniques are used to analyse the impacts on project profitability of factors such as product price, slope design criteria and equipment selection. A fundamental assumption used in this type of analysis is that dump and stockpile designs and sequencing are predetermined. The cost of haulage for a typical truck shovel mining operation is in the range of 25 - 50 per cent of mine operating costs. Substantial cost savings can be achieved by optimisation of dump design and location of associated road and ramp systems.Factors which affect both the operation and total cost of dumping include; Ramp gradients and location, road design, dump placement and shape, dumping height, slope design (interim and final), slope stability, environmental requirements and equipment selection. This paper discusses these factors and their effects on the total mining operation and project value. Reference is made to case studies in which some of these factors have had a significant impact.

The successful implementation of sublevel caving (SLC) at Ridgeway Gold Mine (Ridgeway) requires the technical aspects of caving and flow behaviour to be understood. Cave propagation must be controlled and continuous to allow safe extraction of ore below. The understanding and use of processes to manage granular flow behaviour are also required to ensure economic metal resource recovery. Caving and flow technologies are thus critical to the economic viability of the application of the SLC mining technique to Ridgeway Gold Mine. At the time the Ridgeway SLC design was approved there were significant technical uncertainties associated with cave mining methods, including the SLC mining method in competent rock masses. This was in spite of the fact that caving is a relatively low cost mining method. Unique features generating technical risks at Ridgeway include: the fact that the orebody is blind (550 m below surface); highly competent cap rock (RMR >50); and high aspect ratio (height to width ratio of 3:1). Due to the presence of these unique features Ridgeway is considered to be beyond the current state-of-the-art in SLC mining technologies. The success of the technique at Ridgeway to date has indicated that blind SLC mines in strong rock mass can be operated safely and productively, if the technical risks are understood and properly managed. The risk management process was defined by the use of a formalise process to identify and assess the risks to the mine. The major mining related risks were formalised into Major Hazard Management Plans (MHMP) which contained a description of the risk, early triggers indicating the creation of a hazard and a series of agreed responses to be automatically initiated in the event of each trigger occurring. This paper outlines the following with respect to the critical technology areas of caving and flow: international industry, state-of-the-art technology; gaps in the application of this technology; the application of risk management, new processes developed at Ridgeway to bridge these gaps, including issues encountered; and trials and experimentation conducted to develop the new processes.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The portable infrared mineral analyser (PIMA) was trialled to determine the extent and intensity of any hydrothermal alteration halo associated with gold mineralisation in the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) of the Otago Schist.   Twelve diamond drillholes through the HMSZ were analysed with the PIMA at a sample spacing of 1 m. The drillholes were selected on two traverses along the line of strike and down-dip of the mineralisation in and around Panel 2 of the Frasers underground development.   The study showed that the Hangingwall shear of the HMSZ has a more distinctive infrared signature in intersections with high grades. The Hangingwall shear in these drill holes is defined by a shift in the wavelength of the Al-OH absorption feature from ~2220 nm to <2210 nm. This shift is attributed to a change in the mineralogy from phengite to muscovite. Overprinting this trend in some of the drillholes is the presence of the 2210 nm Al-OH absorption feature, ascribed to kaolinite. Kaolinite also tends to be present in numerous other regions of the schist above the Hangingwall shear associated with steeply dipping faults and foliation parallel joints. In drill holes with low grades the Hangingwall shear does not exhibit any obvious infrared signature.   At the scale of study, the PIMA does not provide evidence for an alteration halo associated with hydrothermal mineralisation above the Hangingwall shear. Possible tectonic movement may have displaced any alteration halo that once existed, away from the zone of mineralisation. For this reason, PIMA apparently cannot be used for predicting the location of the Hangingwall shear during exploration drilling. However, the study did show that the PIMA could define the Hangingwall shear when the rocks were sufficiently altered and mineralised.

The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. This paper looks at the problems associated with surface settlements and other subsidence effects from the underground extraction of coal in relation to consent applications under the Resource Management Act. The main features of subsidence are examined with respect to identifying the adverse effects as defined under the RMA. Particular attention is paid to sites where little or no data is available as in the case of greenfield sites or at mines where new or different mining methods are being introduced. In these situations it is not possible to make accurate predictions of settlements or strains and therefore other factors need to be considered. The long term effects which might occur post mining are examined in relation to mitigation and management options.

The safety in pillar extraction is closely allied to the design features of the pillar extraction system. Considering the conventional supported systems of pillar extraction there are problems associated with complying with the design system outlined. The accident causing agencies and the legislative action to overcome them are im- portant aspects. There is merit in the regularity of support and the limiting of the effects that human error can cause. But new problems and hazards are introduced by this powered support equipment. The comparison of accident experience is difficult due to lack of records and lack of uniformity of approach, but it is clear that powered supports provide a safer system. Every progress in research and practice provides further data to employ in accident prevention.
