In a visionary move, the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Planning in Western Australia decided to invite three extractive industry quarry operators, local government councils and State Government departments (Minerals and Energy, Environmental Protection, South West Development Commission) to contribute jointly to study the impacts of blasting on areas surrounding basalt quarries in the Bunbury region of WA. The results of the study will help establish suitable zones in which land uses will be controlled under a proposed Greater Bunbury Region Scheme and in local planning schemes, to minimise conflicting land uses. This paper discusses the blasting program conducted to characterise and model the vibration behaviour of the rock under the effects of pilot-scale and full production blasting, and highlights some of the benefits achievable when a thorough blasting impact program and assessment is conducted at the planning stages of land-use establishment.

Tailings management trade-off studies are done for all mining projects. There is wide variability in these studies as their approach, details and outcomes are determined by the experience and focus of the project team. While some of these approaches may consider the whole life cycle of the project others may focus only on capital and operating costs and direct environmental impacts. A complete life cycle approach is not standard practice. This paper describes an approach to implementation of formalised life cycle assessment (LCA) following ISO 14044 to tailings management trade-off studies. The paper describes the implementation of the methodological framework for the LCA, ie goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory analysis, life cycle impact assessment and life cycle interpretation. This standardised approach to implementing tailings management trade-off studies following the LCA approach will contribute to the state-of-the-practice in sustainable mine development.

Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. In some parts of Australia, mine air cooling may not be needed until a depth of 1300 m below surface is reached. In other locations, it may be essential at a depth of only 300 m below surface. The reasons for these differences are multifaceted. This paper discusses the main factors and describes a simple method to assess whether or not mine air cooling will be required. The method uses a graphical relationship that considers depth below surface, geothermal gradient, surface climatic conditions and directness of the mine intake routes. This relationship has been developed, tested and refined over a period of more than ten years using data collected from most of Australia’s deeper metalliferous mines. The method provides a ‘first-pass’ indication of whether more detailed cooling studies may be needed. Perhaps more importantly, the method’s underpinning by benchmarking against other mines improves confidence in the assessment results. Escalating electricity costs are one of the biggest operational cost drivers in mining. The trend to use high-powered auxiliary fans delivering increased airflow to meet the dilution requirements of diesel equipment, together with the reliance on ducted systems rather than traditional flow-through systems to ventilate areas, increases the overall energy requirements of ventilation systems. To manage and reduce electricity costs energy management systems can be implemented, inefficient operating units can be replaced and the operation of energy-consuming components of ventilation systems can be optimised.This paper describes the process followed to design and develop an energy-efficient axial flow auxiliary fan. The fan-targeted design was based on static pressure and volume flow rate requirements incorporating higher overall fan efficiencies. A brief overview of the results is given, including the aerodynamic design procedure using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis. The mechanical design criteria used, including stress analysis on the rotor and designs to improve the vibration levels of the fan, are also presented. Through this study it was demonstrated that the aerodynamically designed rotors using profiled and twisted blades improve the total fan efficiency considerably when compared with some of the older-generation fans using cambered plates. The latter were typical in the mining sector in South Africa at the time of the study where average overall fan efficiencies of standard cambered fans less than 63 per cent and some of the older-generation cast aluminium blades have peak overall fan efficiencies of about 65 per cent. Peak overall fan efficiency of more than 80 per cent was achieved by using the described design and development process. Additional benefits are that the fans are quieter due to the better aerodynamic design and have a longer operating life due to reduced vibration levels.In conclusion, the use of CFD to develop fans to deliver the required volume flow at the required pressure allows quicker design turnaround time. It furthermore allows the ventilation engineer the option to specify a specific fan and is not limited to an off-the-shelf catalogue fan. It thus allows engineers to purchase a fit-for-purpose energy-efficient fan. In May 2018 Kasbah Resources Limited (“Kasbah”) completed an ore sorting test work program which was a precursor to releasing in July 2018 an updated Definitive Feasibility Study (“DFS”) for the Achmmach Tin Project in Morocco, which it is proposing to develop along with its joint venture partners. The testwork program evaluated ore sorting as a pre-concentration option to achieve early elimination of gangue and the low-grade component of ROM feed, thereby potentially:  Significantly upgrading the head grade of tin to the downstream processing plant.  Significantly reducing the required throughput capacity (and projected capital expenditure) of the downstream processing plant.  Reducing total consumables, power and water requirements in downstream processing.  Increasing the recovery of tin in the gravity and flotation circuit due to the higher feed grade achievable with ore sorting.  Reducing tailings tonnage, tailings cost and environmental footprint.  Using sorter rejects for mine backfill or road base applications. Key aspects of the design of the metallurgical testwork program centred around the need to ensure that samples representative of ROM ore feed (including projected mining dilution) were selected for the ore sorting testwork. The design and implementation of the ore sorting bulk testwork program is described, as well as a summary of the test work results and a discussion of the enhancement of the project economics reported by Kasbah, which led the company to adopt ore sorting as part of the proposed processing circuit in the updated 2018 DFS.

Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014. Time Usage Models, used as a basis for calculating performance indicators for mobile mining equipment, have developed from very simple to very sophisticated models. This development has paralleled the increased collection and analysis of production data that itself has been enabled by the evolution of underground voice and data communications along with the relevant information systems. A Time Usage Model divides the hours that equipment is (or is not) used into standard components, by a hierarchical breakdown, so that measures of productivity can be used to compare performance of both people and equipment. The calculation of equipment availability, and thus the underlying Time Usage Model, has always been an extremely emotive topic as different groups use time usage information for different purposes. The direct link between measuring performance Key Performance Indicators (KPI) calculated from these models and employee rewards impacts upon the workforce. This paper discusses the conflict in use by various stakeholders and proposes ways to address some of the more contentious issues each supported by case studies. The simple status code functionality used by early systems has proven inadequate, leading to the evolution of “work-arounds”. These workarounds have become the norm and unfortunately have become embedded in the next generation of models and the information systems that incorporate them. This paper contends that the industry should stop building Time Usage Models to accommodate shortcomings in proprietary systems, but rather collaborate with suppliers to develop innovative methods to deal with the fundamental requirements. There are many points of differentiation that are not clear-cut. Pitfalls are discussed as well as threats to success. A framework of rules is developed as guidelines for how a Time Usage Model should be developed and applied. This will hopefully stimulate the on-going discussion as to how Equipment Availability and other components of the model should be calculated.

The paper focuses on how rock bolts are loaded in different rock masses, as well as in pullout tests. Three analytical models for rock bolts are presented in brief, one for bolts in continuously deformed rock masses, one for bolts in blocky rock masses, and one for bolts in pullout tests. The bolt models are used to interpret measurement data for rock bolts from three sources and to help specify the modes of axial load in the rock bolts. It is found that in continuously deformed rock formations fully coupled rock bolts have only one axial stress peak. The position of the axial stress peak moves towards the far end of the bolts with increasing rock deformation. In blocky rock masses several axial stress peaks may appear in the rock bolt. The position of this kind of axial stress peak does not change during the entire loading process. For rock bolts in pullout tests, decoupling of the interface always occurs first at the loading point. The decoupling front moves towards the far end of the bolt with an increase in the applied pull load.

Nautilus Minerals Inc is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.Economies depend upon four key types of capital: built, natural, financial and human. Natural capital consists of the ‘minerals, energy, plants, animals, ecosystems (climatic processes, nutrient cycles and other natural structures and systems) found on Earth that provide a flow of natural goods and services’ (Daly and Farley, 2004). Many ecosystem goods such as fish, fruit and water are already valued and sold in markets; however, some ecosystem services are not amenable to markets and have remained unvalued in traditional accounting methods, even though they provide significant value (such as flood protection, climate stability etc; Batker and Schmidt, 2015).There are now economic methods available to quantify and value natural capital and many non-market ecosystem services. When valued in dollars, these services can be incorporated into a number of economic tools, including benefit-cost analysis, accounting, environmental impact statements, asset management plans and rate of return on investment calculations. Their inclusion ultimately strengthens decision-making. When natural capital assets and ecosystem services are not considered in economic analysis, they are effectively valued at zero. This omission can lead to poor decisions, inefficient capital investments, higher incurred costs and losses due to unexpected events (Batker and Schmidt, 2015).In 2015 Earth Economics was commissioned by Nautilus Minerals Inc to conduct an independent, objective environmental and social benchmarking analysis of the proposed deep seabed Solwara 1 mine with terrestrial copper mines (referred to as ‘the report’). The report represents the first ever natural capital accounting and ecosystem goods and services framework for seabed mining.The report compares the proposed Solwara 1 mine with three terrestrial mines: Bingham Canyon (Utah, USA), Prominent Hill (South Australia, Australia), and Intag (a proposed mine in Intag Province, Ecuador), and provides a natural capital accounting assessment for all four operations.CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. Landform evolution models (LEMs) can assess the effectiveness of landform designs applied to a rehabilitated landform by predicting where erosion may occur. Here, we compare erosion predictions produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM with field observations from the rehabilitated Pit 1 landform of the Ranger uranium mine, based in the Northern Territory, Australia (Figure 1). The ability to predict long-term erosion at a catchment scale is important, as the final rehabilitated Ranger landform is required to physically isolate buried tailings material for at least 10 000 years. CAESAR-Lisflood has been extensively tested and calibrated using data collected from erosion plots (0.09 ha) on the Ranger trial landform (TLF) for multiple years (Lowry et al, 2020; Saynor, Lowry and Boyden, 2019). However, until recently, it was impossible to compare model predictions with field observations for areas larger than the TLF erosion plots. We can now compare model predictions of Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 116 gully development with field observations from the newly rehabilitated, 40 ha surface of Pit 1 over two contiguous one-year periods: 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. The aim of this study was to assess whether the CAESAR-Lisflood model can successfully predict gully erosion at a larger spatial scale.

The production of synthetic rutile from ilmenite using hydrochloric acid leaching is investigated. Previously published data is used to comment on the optimum process conditions. It is shown that the most important aspect to consider is the maximisation of impurity dissolution and the minimisation of titanium losses.

Organisations’ incident classification processes are plagued by the overclassification of events, often leading to excessive workloads and suboptimal outcomes. This presentation addresses the pressing need to rethink how incidents are classified to maximise organisational learning and minimise systemic risk. A major issue in the current incident classification landscape is the tendency to classify events at high levels, overwhelming organisations with investigations they cannot efficiently handle. This results in inadequate risk reduction and learning opportunities. The link between injury classification and investigation methods further compounds these problems, creating unnecessary administrative clutter. Challenging the misconception that every event, no matter how minor, requires a comprehensive investigation, this presentation advocates for a shift in perspective. The key recommendation is to decouple injury classification and risk matrices from the decision-making process regarding what and how to investigate. Instead, the emphasis should be placed on identifying opportunities for organisational learning and risk reduction. Organisations can streamline their incident management processes by adopting a more pragmatic approach that aligns incident classification with the organisation’s investigation capacity. This transformation focuses on achieving meaningful outcomes, enhancing safety and improving performance. This presentation provides an innovative process for organisations to revamp their incident classification practices, enabling them to harness the full potential of incident data for learning and risk mitigation. It highlights the importance of aligning incident classification with the opportunity for organisational learning, ultimately leading to more effective incident management and enhanced safety outcomes.

In a ætypicalÆ gold deposit each tonne of ore will contain tens of millions of very fine gold particles, whereas; at Bendigo the majority of gold in each tonne of ore is present in just five to 15 very coarse gold particles, a distribution more akin to diamond deposits. At Bendigo the minimum sample size required for good assay repeatability is estimated at 4.5 t for each assay. Drill core samples are several orders of magnitude too small to generate representative assays.The drilling data are characterised by a nugget effect approaching 90 per cent, a very skewed distribution and, on average, under-report in situ grade by 50 per cent to 75 per cent. Since 2002 Bendigo Mining NL has completed 47 000 m of diamond drilling, 1200 m of on reef development, collected and processed 100 bulk samples (150 t each), 800 mini bulk samples (50 kg each) and processed in excess of 25 000 t of ore through a pilot plant. The results of this work have provided the information required to develop and verify a robust grade estimation procedure. No standard geostatistical manipulation of the drilling assay data can generate an accurate grade estimate as the samples and associated assays are not representative of the ore being sampled. The recognition of this fact was critical as a radical transformation of the raw drill assay data was required to develop a workable methodology for grade estimation in such a high nugget environment. The aim of the transformation was to reduce the nugget effect and high variance and so approach a lognormal assay distribution. Ideally the average drill grade would approximate actual in situ grade and the assay distribution would reflect actual grade distribution within the reefs. Following the data transformation simple block modeling within the defined resources allows grade estimates to be made that can be used in the estimation of Indicated Resources and hence Probable Reserves. The grade estimates have been checked by extensive bulk sampling and processing of 25 000 t of ore (three per cent of total resource) through a pilot plant with planned full scale mining to provide the ultimate verification.

A non-contacting under-belt capacitance and gamma-ray backscatter technique has been developed for the on-line measurement of moisture in coal. In this technique, moisture was correlated with radio frequency susceptance and conductance determined using an under-belt capacitance sensor in which a fringing electric field Interrogates a layer of coal on the conveyor belt directly above the sensor. To compensate for variations in the density and thickness of the coal layer, an under-belt gamma-ray backscatter gauge was used to measure an equivalent volume of coal.A plant trial of the technique was conducted at Stockton Borehole Colliery, SW Australia, where the gauges were installed on the coking coal product conveyor. Product moistures, in the range 7 - 14%, were determined with r.m.s errors of 0.50 and 0.25 wt% using on-belt and static off-belt gauges, respectively. The difference in the on-belt and off-belt gauge measurement accuracy was attributed to sampling errors in the calibration of the onbelt gauge.

Banded iron-formation (BIF) and iron ores were measured using the CSIRO developed TIRHyLogger ™ to assess its ability to map quartz, carbonates and riebeckite. The TIR-HyLogger™ measures continuously spectral refl ectance data from diamond drill core or drill chips with a high spatial and spectral resolution. Samples from twelve BIF, bedded iron deposits (BID) and channel iron deposits (CID) have been analysed. The spectral data were processed with two different approaches. The first approach, focused on the identifi cation of the major minerals, was performed using principal component analysis (PCA). It identified four minerals (quartz, ankerite, riebeckite and goethite) and provided pure spectra called end-members. The second approach included a mineral diagnostic spectral feature extraction involving wavelength position, relative peak heights and relative depths of absorptions. Quartz has a diagnostic absorption at 8.625 µm and ankerite shows a refl ectance peak at 11.275 µm. In addition to the identified end-members, two carbonate populations (calcite and siderite) and two silica species (quartz and amorphous silica) were identified.

Quay Magnesium Limited (QMG) listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late September 2004 having raised approximately A$30 million with the object of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a 15 000 tpa magnesium alloy production facility in Nanjing, China. Site construction commenced in February 2005, with installation of all major components completed by the end of October 2005. Hot commissioning was simultaneously commenced with the final stages of installation, leading to the first stage of continuous ingot casting by mid November 2005. Since that time, ramp-up to the name plate capacity has been undertaken. This presentation highlights some of the more significant technical and logistical hurdles that have had to be overcome in order to meet the high quality product specifications required by a range of QMG customers.

The non-metallic minerals, excluding the construc- tions and fuel materials have for long been the "poor relations" of the Mining Industry of New South Wales. The State is self-sufficient in only a few of the industrial minerals and is almost completely lacking in any of the essential fertilizers. The deficiencies must be met by imports from overseas and interstate and in fact New South Wales imports some quantity of every one of the non-metallics. For the year 1967 the value of non-metallic mineral production amounted to only $9,390,000 or less than 3.5% of the States total of $275,900,000 for all classes of mining and quarrying. In roughly the same period, the 1967-68 financial year, New South Wales imported non- metallic materials, valued at well in excess of $22,000,000 from overseas and over $2,000,000 from interstate sources.

This paper describes studies into two particular aspects of the Lochiel deposit which formed part of feasibility level geot2chnical and hydrogeological investigations for proposed open cut mine development. The two aspects were depressurisation of thick beds of silt located through the profile and the determination of characteristics and origins of soil structure and their effect on pit stability. The studies were very detailed and multi disciplinary and highlight the integration of geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology and mining that is required for mine development studies. It is considered that as more marginal deposits are developed throughout the world the demands for efficient economic mining together with in- creasing scales of operation will require simi- lar types of studies. As such the studies pre- sented herein are likely to be a forerunner to a,emerging trend for development of open pit mines in difficult ground and water conditions.
