The Taupo Volcanic Zone in New Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (40%) and higher Cl contents (3,000-10,000 mg/kg). Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.

A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. We can look at the water treatment and management strategies at some recently commissioned mines and minerals processing sites to see the likely future of water in mining. The future of water in mining will be based on a holistic approach to understanding the site water balance, appropriate treatment, reuse where possible, and environmentally managed discharge where required. This paper describes advanced and innovative water treatment and reuse processes as used by mines and mineral processing operations from around the world. Underground mining can often require dewatering to prevent groundwater seeping into and flooding the mine workings. Mining and processing often accumulates wastewaters in a tailings dam. The mine water can contain contaminants such as dissolved salts, iron, arsenic, manganese, heavy metals and acidic and odorous sulfates. On-site reuse, environmental discharge requirements, as well as community needs for water, drive mine operators to consider the most appropriate water treatment process. Mining water treatment for the future is described using case studies of innovative processes. The case studies include treatment of mine dewatering water for beneficial application from Australian mines, Ballarat Goldfields and Bendigo mining, treatment of produced water from oil and gas projects, and treatment for arsenic removal of tailings water from mining and processing at Goldcorp mines in Canada. Advanced and innovative processes including membrane filtration, reverse osmosis at extreme conditions, advanced biological treatment and water management are all part of these case studies. This paper uses real case studies of advanced and innovative mine water treatment processes to explain and examine the technology and the reasons for designing specific processes. The focus is on innovative processes that may be more widely used in future mining û where the water is used for sustainable environmental discharge or treatment to a quality that can be beneficially used by the mine or the local community.

The swelling process is an impor- tant problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from oedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the oedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.

Answers to the questions "which rocks contain diamonds?" and "which indicator minerals should diamond explorers look for?" are no longer so easily obtained, now that diamonds are known to occur in lamproites and various types of lamprophyres, as well as their traditional source of kimberlites. One way of isolating those factors (host-rock"geochemistry, geographical or tectonic location, xenolith minerals, etc.) which are most critical in determining the diamond potential of a given pipe, is a detailed and critical re-examination of the huge volumes of accumulated data on kimberlites, lamproites and related rocks. A large analytical database to this end has been set up on an Apple Macintosh II microcomputer using the quasi-relational database management system 4th Dimension. Currently, it contains data for up to 90 major and trace elements, isotopic ratios and contained mineral compositions for some 4,000 rock specimens from all over the world. Many experiences in setting up this database are probably relevant to other geologists setting up their own systems: they include determining the relationships between data items; the advantages of codes over free text in representing categorical variables such as rock types; the need for rigorous error trapping and data validation; and the problem of missing data values and ambiguities thereof. The working system is now being used in a rigorous statistical assessment of the criteria which distinguish diamondiferous from non-diamondiferous rocks.

Various ways for applying the X-ray fluorescent method to process lump-by lump separation of secondary aluminium raw materials (scrap, slags, waste) as well as ferrosilicon and ferrochromium are being considered and physically demonstrated. A commercial X-ray radiometric sorter has been developed for processing secondary raw materials. Marketable quantities of aluminium scrap with appropriate copper and zinc content have been produced for smelting with a minimal additional of pure aluminium. An industrial complex for scrap processing, incorporating two X-ray radiometric sorters from the Hammermils company is successfully operating at one of the works in Russia.

The urgent need for the control of surface subsidence caused by longwall coal mining in densely populated areas of China has led to a feasibility study on the effectiveness of longwall goaf cemented backfill. The study is focussed on exploring the potential of longwall goaf cemented backfill practice for surface subsidence control. Specific backfill geometry was designed in view of the characteristics of the longwall coal mining system. Laboratory physical simulated tests were carried out with different backfill material properties and pack size. The tests achieved a marked reduction in surface subsidence by the use of goaf cemented backfill. The system has been shown to be effective in laboratory tests, the challenge now is to overcome the engineering problems to put it into practice.

This paper describes the design of the steel fibre reinforced precast concrete (SFRC) segmental lining for the intake and discharge tunnels for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. In addition, the key design requirements and design methods for the lining of these 2 km long, 2.8 m internal diameter tunnels, including structural, durability and maintenance requirements are discussed. Details of the segment configuration and erection process are presented along with information on the manufacture and trial testing of the concrete for the segments. The paper also gives a brief introduction to steel fibre reinforced concrete behaviour. Construction of the tunnels commenced in April 2007, and the authors believe this is the first application of this technology in Australia.

Studies of human relations are being made by a team of psychologists within management and in the community of Kambalda as a whole. Some of the first results are discussed with reference to extensions required in management when it also has to run a mining town. Implications are noted for town planning policies of the attitudes and preferences of the population with regard to housing and to other major planning areas. Some of the theoretical and practical difficulties of 'planning the human ecology' are outlined.

A nuclear technique for the analysis of copper in bulk materials has been developed and successfully field tested at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The technique utilises the gamma-ray resonance scattering process. A bulk analyser based on this technique gives a rapid and accurate measurement of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel aver- aged over a large mass of sample, typically 20 kg. The only sample preparation required for accurate analysis is crushing to -2.5 cm. At Mount Isa over 100 mineral samples covering a wide range of rock types and copper contents were analysed. Bulk analyser assays and chemical laboratory assays agreed closely for underground pillar-extraction and geolog- ical chip samples, conveyor belt samples, and finely ground samples from the ore concentrator. For the concentrator samples, the root mean square deviation between bulk analyser and chem- ical laboratory assays was 0.06 wt.% copper. The chemical assay errors for these samples were about 0.06 wt.%

A programme began in 1970 to eliminate the charging of fine materials into the copper blast furnace of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia Ltd. at Port Kembla, N.S.W. A disc pelletiser and drying plant has been installed as part of this programme. Feed material for the plant is a blended mixture of copper concentrates, fine copper-bearing residues, and blast furnace cyclone dust. The operating parameters for the disc have been calculated by comparing the perform- ance of three other discs on the plant. Re- search work on choice of binder, feed moisture and drying conditions has led to the production of reasonably high strength pellets. A description of the pellet plant and modifications necessary to overcome the initial performance problems is given.

Bulk explosives provide the energy to move a rock mass and reduce it to an optimal size (fragmentation). The intensity of energy needed depends on several factors including a customer’s geology and end objectives. An energy mapping tool has been developed to help customers to determine their bulk explosive needs based on these objectives.At one end of the energy map dealing with high-energy products, a new range of bulk explosives products for surface mining have been developed. With these products, it is possible to provide blast designs with up to nearly triple the relative bulk strength (RBS) of ANFO, and address primary focus areas for mining operations, including the reduction of drill and blast costs, improvements in production rates, better face advance through improved broken stock management, better drill productivity, improved milling efficiency and lower energy costs in surface mines.In this paper, field trial results from the first level of new high-energy products are presented. These products have an RBS 2.25 times that of ANFO. Industry variations of a smaller diameter (89 mm) pumped product for civil quarrying applications, and for large diameter (311 mm) hard-rock metalliferous mines are presented. For both cases, the run-of-mine fragmentation levels obtained with the new bulk explosives are contrasted with the fragmentation profile generated with the currently accepted product range applied in similar geological conditions. The new products show increased fragmentation across the measured size distribution, with reduction in P50 values of 20 and 37 per cent over the currently used product for the 311 mm and 89 mm diameter blastholes respectively.CITATION:Wilkinson, D, Rigby, G, Norgard, J and Thomson, S, 2015. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is increasingly being used as a decision-support tool within mining and minerals processing and metals production. However, a number of initiatives have highlighted the current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. These programs include:the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable development project (Stewart, 2001); the United Nations Environment Programmme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (UNEP/SETAC) workshop on LCA and metals (NRCan, 2002); the UNEP SETAC Life Cycle Initiative; and the review of the existing ISO 14 040 set of environmental management standards. Together, these initiatives highlighted concerns relating to the ability of LCA to engage with and support metals recycling, to adequately reflect the impacts associated with products from a multi-product orebody, the ability to adequately reflect the toxicity potential of metals in the natural environment and the fact that resource depletion focuses on mining (and not consumption) as the depleting activity in the life cycle of a metal. Additional impact categories to be included in LCA were also suggested. In this paper we demonstrate how existing initiatives are addressing LCA limitations. Finally we present the state of the art in Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) for two impact categories:resource depletion; and impacted land footprint for solid wastes.

It is often assumed that geotechnical investigations or studies for open pit mines are confined to providing a slope design. However in an operating mine, the design is only one component of a mine geotechnical program. Reviews of slope designs are ongoing throughout the mine life. The concept of Pit Slope Management has been formulated because the design only entails one component of a total program that contributes to a safe, efficient mining operation. Risk is a normal part of mining. Effective management allows the risk to be contained or controlled. If the slopes are not effectively managed there will be increased risk for the operation. Experience has shown that utilisation of Pit Slope Management coupled with a broad base of experience to define the key controls on stability, provides a pro-active, objective approach. The reasoning is deductive and relies on the behaviour of the ærocksÆ. Once the key aspects are defined, studies are well focused, implemented as required and the risks can be effectively managed. When the key controls on stability are poorly understood reasoning is typically more ægut feelÆ. Under such circumstances studies, if carried out, may meet short-term objectives but often ignore the long-term objectives. Hence the risk to the project is greatly increased. This paper presents several case studies highlighting the above aspects and present elements of the Pit Slope Management Program approach which have been successfully utilised by the author to manage risk in mining projects.

The spatial distribution of ore with similar processing properties or domains within an orebody may be identified early in the assessment of an orebody to provide a sound basis for later development of the orebody. The assignment of domains in the primary sulfide portion of an orebody is often more difficult than recognition of the oxidised, supergene and related domains usually located towards the top of the mineralised volume. This paper will discuss some approaches to assigning domains within the primary sulfide portion of an orebody. The processing properties of each mining block will be known if the contained domain(s) and their proportions are known. The use of both physical and chemical ore properties to assign the domains is discussed. The domains based on similar processing properties do not necessarily coincide with geological zones assigned by geoscientists. As part of assessing the physical properties of ore, the modal analysis of the ore with respect to the valuable sulfide minerals and the sulfide and non sulfide gangue minerals has to be known, along with the traditionally used elemental assays for valuable and penalty elements. Two scales for determining other physical ore properties will be considered: the mesoscopic scale (examined by human eye) and the microscopic scale (examined via a microscope under high magnification). The strengths and weaknesses of the data obtained at the two scales are discussed in the paper. Broadly, data collected at the mesoscopic scale are much less expensive but the types of data available are more limited. Methods for evaluation of chemical ore properties are also discussed. After establishing a basis for establishing the spatial distribution of domains, variability testing is required to verify the integrity of the designated domains. In contrast, each block of ore in some orebodies has been assessed principally via the results of a laboratory separation on a number of drill core samples or composites from throughout the block, with minimal or no attention to the concept of domains.

The increasing demand for underground cooling in South African gold mines has resulted in various cooling methods being con- sidered, including the use of ice. Two main areas in connection with ice cooling systems are being investigated. The first concerns the efficient and cost effective production of ice on a larger scale than previously required for any other application. The second con- cerns the transportation of ice in pipes from surface ice-making machines to underground melting sites.

The Hamersley Province in Western Australia hosts large iron ore deposits. Each deposit displays various iron ore types that were defined on their metallurgical properties, especially in terms of porosity and mineralogy. Conventional porosity and mineralogy information on iron ore types are provided on 2D thin sections using automated image analysis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based techniques combined with chemical analyses. However these techniques cannot accurately quantify the 3D porosity. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a non-destructive technique providing a 3D image of the sample with a resolution close to 0.5 - 0.7 ¦m for samples size of up to few centimetres in length. 3D image analysis using customised algorithms now provide accurate quantitative porosity and mineralogy of iron ore types.CITATION:Fonteneau, L C P J, Godel, B and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. A special model of vertically loaded pillar behaviour is introduced to the general, multi-plate based, floor-pillar-roof system interaction analogue. This permitted analysing room-and-pillar mine systems in any geological conditions, including the effect of pillar elastic-plastic behaviour with strain softening. In the model, pillar instability is one of the important phenomenon, which may be expected to occur, and which the operator has to be prepared for. Thus the entire systemÆs safety is determined mainly by strong roof strata behaviour and therefore they have to be examined in actual stress-strain conditions utilising the appropriate strength theories. It was assumed that the so-called safety margin, representing the relation between load intensity and material strength, might serve as the basic indicator of possible roof instability development. Therefore, the safety margin may be estimated by comparing the actually computed components of stress-strain tensor with ultimate values characteristic for a given material determined in laboratory. In order to illustrate the effect of technological pillar size on roof strata stability, two different mining systems (methods of mining) in one of the æPolkowice-SieroszowiceÆ Mine districts was modelled using the finite element method formulated in three dimensions, assuming different materials within different rock mass strata, as well as a number of horizontal planes of discontinuity within the model.

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.

In December 2004 Phu Bia Mining Ltd commissioned Ausenco International Limited to conduct a feasibility study for its Phu Kham copper-gold project located in Laos. The feasibility study for a mining and processing operation treating 12 Mtpa of ore averaging 0.56 per cent copper and 0.25 g/t gold to produce an anticipated annual average 200 000 t of concentrate containing 25 per cent copper was completed in early 2006. The plant design incorporates a single processing line and includes a gyratory crusher, overland conveyor, coarse ore stockpile, SAG and ball mill grinding circuit, flotation circuit including regrind and three stages of cleaning, concentrate dewatering and concentrate load-out facilities. The Phu Kham copper-gold mineralisation comprises two principal styles: stockwork-disseminated and banded-massive sulfide within skarn limits. Primary copper in both mineralisation styles occurs as chalcopyrite and secondary copper sulfide minerals. Skarn includes the copper and gold mineralisation contained in pyrite, silicate, magnetite and haematite skarns, and in quartz-pyrite altered sediments. Both the stockwork-disseminated and banded-massive sulfide ores contain relatively high proportions of pyrite relative to the copper and gold mineralisation. Thus, the flotation metallurgy of the Phu Kham orebody is characterised by the need to reject a high proportion of the pyrite during differential flotation to yield a concentrate grade of approximately 25 per cent copper. The rejection of pyrite is accompanied by the rejection of some copper and gold and can result in modest metallurgical recovery. Consequently, the greater the pyrite content, the lower the expected copper and gold recoveries. The relative pyrite content is expressed on the basis of sulfur:copper ratio. For Phu Kham ores, the sulfur:copper ratios are in the range eight to 14 on a blended annual basis, but can be greater than 20 in the skarn components. Higher grades of copper and gold are also present in the skarn mineralisation. The design concepts for the concentrator were influenced by the need to provide a low capital cost approach for the project due to the relatively low grade of the ore and the modest metallurgical recovery. The concepts used to minimise capital cost whilst retaining operating and maintenance flexibility are discussed, together with the metallurgical challenges imposed by the high pyrite mineralisation.
