The Obuasi Mine has been in operation for the past 100 years. Within this period a host of mining methods have been employed during its various changing phases. The causes for the changes are multiple, ranging from orebody capability, dynamics, technology, safety, economics, production levels, geotechnical, etc. Mining methods applied have also ranged from timber square setts, conventional cut-and-fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel caving, mechanised cut-and-fill, longitudinal and transverse open stoping, and lately longitudinal retreat mining method (LRMM).The Obuasi Mine has a world class underground resource potential of about 27 million ounces. A third of this is in reserve. The orebody is subvertical, with multiple lodes and with widths ranging from 1.5 - 40 m. It stretches along 8.5 km N/S strike. A cursory statistical analysis on the various resource ore widths show a higher percentage (60 per cent) of the resource being within the range of about 1.5 - 10 m. Thus a high proportion of the resource is amenable to narrow vein mining methods. This has enhanced the choice of LRMM as an alternative method. Also, with the increasing cost of mining over time, LRMM, which eliminates expensive and time consuming footwall drives, will become far more advantageous as compared to the transverse/longitudinal open stoping methods which currently constitute about 40 per cent of the total underground production.The LRMM currently delivers about 20 per cent of the Obuasi Mine production. Plans are underway to improve total underground production from the current average of 160 000 tpm to about >180 000 tpm in the next few years and about 20 - 40 per cent more in the foreseeable future. Recoverable ounces will also increase from 26 000 to about 34 000 ounces per month. The proportion of LRMM in the business plan is also expected to increase from the current modest level to about 50 per cent. Despite its tremendous advantages in terms of economics and productivity, the method is facing some challenges during its inception. Spent Pot Lining (SPL) is an unavoidable waste product of the electrolytic process in the smelting of aluminium. SPL is considered to be a hazardous waste in various countries because it contains significant quantities of absorbed fluoride along with traces of cyanide. The disposal of SPL has been primarily in landfill because of difficulties in the development of a successful techno-economic SPL treatment process. Increasing concern about SPL landfilling practices is resulting in regulations in some countries to ban this form of disposal. As a consequence stock piling of SPL is occurring in an increasing number of countries pending the development of a successful treatment process. In 1992 Portland Aluminium investigated a SPL treatment process based on pyrometallurgical technology and approached a company called Ausmelt in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, to ascertain if their submerged lance technology furnace process would be suitable to treat SPL. This approach resulted in Portland Aluminium, Alcoa and Ausmelt personnel working together on trials during 1992 - 1994 in Ausmelt's demonstration furnace to produce a slag and off gases containing hydrogen and sodium fluoride. The trials also evaluated the effect of oxygen enrichment to increase the concentration of hydrogen fluoride and the ability to recycle sodium fluoride particulate produced as the furnace off gases cooled. Other separate developmental work by Portland Aluminium, using CSIRO, resulted in the production of aluminium fluoride from the offgases from the pyrometallurgical process. The results of these projects influenced Portland Aluminium and Alcoa to authorise up to $A26 400 000 in December 1995 to construct a Research and Development processing facility to treat SPL at Portland. The Portland Aluminium unique gas treatment process converts hydrogen fluoride in the furnace offgases to aluminium fluoride in a multistage fluidised bed reactor, designed by Portland Aluminium. The aluminium fluoride produced in the reactor has been trialed successfully in Alcoa's aluminium smelting process as a replacement for imported aluminium fluoride. The installation in mid-2001 of a slag granulation system has enabled the production of a granulated vitreous slag having leachability qualities that conform to Victorian EPA criteria for the unrestricted use of the granulated vitreous slag from 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process'. The unrestricted use of the granulated slag successfully completes 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process' which treats the hazardous waste material SPL and converts it into non hazardous useful products.

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd - Ranger Mine is located about 255 kilometres east of Darwin in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. The Ranger project is surrounded by Kakadu National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. . Ranger Mine operates the largest uranium mine and processing plant in Australia. It is designed to produce 3000 tonnes of uranium oxide per year, but presently is producing a little less than one half that figure due to the depressed uranium market. The safety performance of the employees and Ranger as a whole continues to improve. The lost time injuries (LTI) have significantly reduced from 74 in 1985 to five in 1994. The total days lost due to LTIs have gone from 1543 to 14. These significant improvements have reflected directly on workers' compensation premiums in which a four-fold reduction has occurred. It is estimated that the actual monetary saving to the company is about $1.3 million per year and directly reports to the profit of the company. There is also an obvious and significant reduction in the less quantifiable costs such as the suffering of the injured employees and cost to society. The paper will review the various initiatives introduced and assess their effectiveness. Performance improvement is primarily dependent on the commitment, introduction of various initiatives and the subsequent change in workplace culture.

Efficient pre-concentration using natural and induced deportment starts with effective blast design. Leveraging these characteristics using Size-Based Grade Engineering® techniques requires detailed understanding and measurement of the particle size distribution (PSD) of the Run of Mine (ROM) ore. In turn, blasts must be designed to optimise fragmentation for the pre-concentration method. To be successful, fragmentation outcomes must be predicted and measured as part of the blast design process to account for the response ranking of the rock mass. The upgrade achieved using Size-Based Grade Engineering® methodologies will rely on the proportion of feed that reports to the screen undersize, so particle size distribution of the feed stock is of paramount importance if the potential benefits are to be achieved and maintained. Measuring actual fragmentation in the ROM ore and comparing with predictions allows the modification of subsequent blast designs to optimise fragmentation for pre-concentration scenarios. Automating this process can deliver significant increases in productivity and mine site profits. This paper discusses the importance fragmentation plays in Size-Based Grade Engineering® and explores technologies and methodologies used to measure it, consistently ensuring the best outcomes.

The Avebury nickel mine in Western Tasmania is a disseminated nickel sulfide deposit hosted in intensely metasomatised Cambrian ultramafic resulting from later Devonian granite related hydrothermal activity.Variable metasomatism of the ultramafic has formed two distinct gangue mineral assemblages. Less metasomatised ultramafic is comprised of fine grained black antigorite with minor disseminated chromite, magnetite and pentlandite. Intensely metasomatised ultramafic is altered to a pale grey or green, coarsely crystalline tremolite/actinolite and diopside assemblage with minor magnetite, chromite and sulfides. Both gangue mineral assemblages are frequently intermixed in ore grade mineralisation.The bimodal gangue of either serpentinite or metasomatised ultramafic presents challenges to drilling, mining, resource estimation and mineral processing as they possess very different physical properties. Mineralised serpentinite has a mean bulk density of 2.8 g/cc and the ultramafic skarn a mean bulk density of 3.2 g/cc. Physically, the ultramafic skarn is hard to break percussively creating difficulties in the crushing circuit and reducing mine development rates. However, it is non-abrasive and grinds readily, resulting in increased diamond drilling rates and increased mill throughput. Conversely the serpentinite gangue is softer and breaks easily resulting in accelerated development rates and crushing circuit throughput. However, its fibrous nature reduces grinding efficiency, increasing bond work indices and reducing diamond drilling rates.Predicting the ratio of serpentinised to metasomatised ultramafic is possible through use of the resource blockmodel, assisting mine scheduling, predicting mill throughput rates, energy consumption and grade control drilling rates.CITATION:Callaghan, T J, 2017. The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia holds significant tonnages of detrital iron deposits. Formed by a cyclic weathering and eroding sequence of nominally barren banded iron formation, they may form rich proximal accumulations of iron cemented gravels distal from any obvious hard-rock iron mineralisation. While generally small, they nonetheless represent excellent economic targets as they are near surface and easy to mine. The relatively high density of iron detritals, when compared with their sedimentary hosts, makes the gravity method the primary method of exploring for these blind deposits. Identification of possible trap sites is used as a precursor to gravity surveying, with magnetics used as an ancillary method prior to drilling. Application of the gravity method in this terrain is not straightforward. Detrital trap sites are best developed next to the spectacular cliffs that form the range fronts to the Hamersley Ranges. Precise terrain corrections and use of first vertical derivatives are routinely applied to gravity data in an effort to map every possible gravity high that may reflect the presence of a detrital accumulation. Extensions to Hamersley Iron Pty LimitedÆs BS2D deposit were discovered by the routine application of gravity. This methodology has been used to create a model by which exploration for detrital deposits continue to the present day.

Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

The world reserves of high-grade iron ore have depleted necessitating the need to utilise any existing natural iron ore deposits to meet the demands of the world’s expanding economy using hydrogen in the reduction process to curb CO2 emission. These low-grade ores include iron ores with high phosphorus content. The thermodynamic conditions in the blast furnace allow for the reduction of phosphorus that readily dissolves into the molten iron. Phosphorus in the gaseous state readily dissolves into the molten iron and therefore must be removed due to its negative influence on the mechanical properties of steel. The removal of phosphorus from molten iron is difficult causing the phosphorus to concentrate in metallic iron. The aim of this study is to provide basic knowledge on the phosphorus distribution after reduction using the CO-H2 and possibly provide the optimum conditions for phosphorus partitioning into slag, increasing the probability of its removal by magnetic separation. Total porosity, pore size distribution and surface area of the pellets used were measured using a mercury pressure porosimeter. The reduction was carried out using thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The reduction rate increased with increasing H2 and was highest when 100 per cent H2 was used. Metal elements distribution in the reduced pellet was clarified using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and showed that phosphorus was distributed in the same areas as Ca. More phosphorus was concentrated in slag when 50 per cent CO–50 per cent H2 was used, increasing the probability of dephosphorization using magnetic separation. The concentration of phosphorus into slag was related to the rate of reduction. Further investigations into the reduction kinetics of this ore by CO-H2 is suggested to validate these findings. Nevertheless, a comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of the reduction of phosphorus containing phases found in iron ore with carbon, CO and H2 was provided to assist in selecting the optimal reduction experimental conditions.

Boliden Tara Mines Ltd, located in County Meath Ireland, produce in excess of 2.5 million tonnes per annum of ore from the underground resource located 40 miles north west of Dublin. The zinc-lead ore is mined using long hole open stoping techniques, with ore treated on site. The operation is continually searching for new ways to improve productivities at the mine, and have employed a detailed data acquisition and reporting system on site to provide feedback around performance. One area where both Boliden Tara Mines Ltd and Orica Mining Services believed improvements could be made was in the application of bulk emulsion technology through an Orica supplied but Tara operated Maxipump Delivery System for all production and development blasting at the mine. Both parties committed to the evaluation of this technology at the mine, however the capital cost and technical and economic changes meant the project needed to be diligently investigated and any improvements documented. The first stage of this project was for Orica Mining Services personnel to visit the operation, and conduct a detailed analysis of the operationÆs performance over the past 12 months. The next step in moving forward was then to commission and utilise the customer operated emulsion system at the mine. This was then followed with the collation and analysis of data from the demonstration period to examine and document the benefits of the system. This paper is a summary of the observations made during the site inspection and the data analysed to date, and has been used in determining operational and financial improvements in the comparison between a Maxipump Emulsion Service and the current ANFO loading systems.

Base-metal sulfide refractory gold ores often contain a portion of ‘free’ gold that is amenable to recovery using gravity concentration methods, whilst the refractory portion of the gold is better recovered using flotation. The decision as to whether a plant treating a refractory gold ore should utilise gravity concentration or a flash flotation circuit (or a combination of both) within the grinding circuit is usually made at the design stage of flow sheet development. Very limited data is available in the published literature which provides an industrial scale comparison on which to base such a decision and conventional laboratory testing methods are often the only way of obtaining such data. The optimum processing route will also be mineralogy dependent.This paper presents the findings of operating a refractory gold plant with either flash flotation (normal operation) or a combination of flash and gravity recovery methods treating the cyclone underflow stream and will demonstrate the regions of the recovery profile that each contributes to. Size-by-assay analysis has been performed on a number of streams around the operating plant to gain an insight into the changes that occur when the gravity circuit is in operation in addition to the flash flotation circuit. Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. The establishment of the Imperial Smelting Furnace at Sulphide Coporation Pty. Limited for the smelting of zinc and lead made it necessary to design and install sintering capacity to produce approximately 500 t.p.d. of zinc-lead sinter. The updraught sintering process installed is a recent development and the plant was designed with adequate flexibility and equipment to enable operating staff to investigate the process and achieve maximum production under optimum operating conditions.Sulphur dioxide gases from the sinter machine are passed to a contact acid plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid.

Work practices involved in shaft construction can be aligned with current industry standard operating practices. However, the working environment during conventional shaft construction introduces unique conditions which can not always be overcome by hard engineering controls. To provide an improved working environment, future shaft diameters will generally be greater than has historically been the case for the Australian hard rock mining industry. This paper aims to explore both what can be constructed from the contractors perspective, and how does an owner extract maximum business efficiency from an asset that in many ways is likely to be larger, more complex and more expensive than initially envisaged.Newcrest Mining Limited, or an associated company, has constructed two major shafts over the last seven years. In both cases, Byrnecut Mining, or an associated company, was the contractor engaged for the shaft sinking activity. The first is the 1127 m deep, 7.0 m diameter production and intake airway at the Telfer Gold Mine, the second is a 295 m deep, 5.5 m diameter split shaft at the Gosowong Gold Project in Indonesia that was primarily designed as both an intake and exhaust airway. Importantly both shafts are designed to provide emergency egress from the respective underground operations.From an Australian shaft sinking perspective, the construction of these two shafts resulted in the following learnings: •constructability is of equal importance to desired functionality;•allow six months of interactive design between the owner/engineer/contractor/regulator to get it right;•shaft sinking and equipping are intimately entwined, therefore engineering of both needs to be complete prior to any activity commencing; and•the mobilisation of both equipment and experienced personnel to a new shaft sink takes up to eight months.Shaft sinking is not extinct in the Australian hard rock mining industry. But, if you are considering constructing a shaft, approach it as a long life asset, front end planning to a high level of detail is required to unlock its full value. Think – plan – think and remember it’s going to take 12 months to get from the whiteboard to firing the first cut.

Mass blasts have been the subject of extensive studies because of their potential benefits in mining operations. However, it has not been possible to advance due to the paradigm that states that the blasts near the designed final wall or to critical structures have to be low tonnage. Another reason is the absence of specialised simulation programs to more precisely determine the influence of the energy released by blasting to the rock mass. There are some studies that demonstrate the possibility of massive blasting that maintain the design of the final slope (Farias and Santander, 2014). It should be noted that these studies develop the concept that the size of the blast should not increase the peak vibration in the rock mass.The study was carried out in partnership with Los Colorados Mining Company. Analysis, reconciliation and wall control for two types of blasts were performed:blasting production: approximately 850 000 t, with special wall control considerationsblasting of approximately 950 000 t over the entire width of the bench.Monitoring systems were used in the near field and far field using examination of holes in order to obtain information to assess the impact on the rock mass and then to compare these to conventional blasting combining production and contour blasting.The results show that for a large blasted volume, production and/or those generated from toe to crest on the bench did not produce more impact in the rock mass than the conventional blasting.The conclusions drawn from this study are:an improvement in the excavation rate of 7500 t/h that is higher than the maximum rates normally obtainedthe peak vibrations of the P wave generated by both blasts did not exceed the peak particle velocity criteria (Vergara and Muñoz, 2014)holes examination indicating no difference in their entire length, in pre- and post-blast reviewover US$2 000 000 savings generated in the year (estimated by the client) (Avilés, 2014).CITATION:Vergara, J, Muñoz, C, Ortega, N and Avilés, D, 2015. All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. The Red October Gold Mine, owned by Saracen Gold Mines Pty Ltd, is located approximately 80 km south of Laverton, Western Australia. It is considered to be of a similar nature to many of the Archaean granite-greenstone deposits in the Laverton Tectonic Zone, and presents as an intriguing and relatively young deposit in terms of developed structural and genetic models. Regional deformation events have been proposed for the area, and are relatively well accepted. The most important of these deformation events in the region were the D4b (WNW–ESE sinistral transpression) and D5 (ENE–WSW dextral transpression) which have been attributed to the main Au mineralising phases. At the local scale there appears to have been a rotation of the regional stress field to provide the optimum orientation of maximum principal stress for sinistral movement on the main shear zone.Fully coupled 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was used to simulate the geomechanical response of the system based on structural observations. The geomechanical modelling resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two main deformation events. The D4 simulation provided a good correlation with the known distribution of subsidiary structures on the main shear zone, and furthermore provided several geomechanical targets that suggested locations of additional subsidiary structures. The D5 simulation provided a great insight into the response of the main shear zone and known subsidiary structures also highlighting additional targets indicating potential for further mineralisation. These targets have since been followed up with a 732 m deep surface reverse circulation (RC) drill hole, resulting in the discovery of two high-grade shoots, with follow up testing currently planned for mid-2014.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Conn, J, Howe, D and Gates, K, 2014. The Gramalote orebody is a large low-grade gold deposit situated in the San Roque municipality, 124 km north-east of Medellin in Antioquia, Colombia. It is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and B2Gold and is currently in Feasibility Study phase. In 2013 AGA requested CRCORE to undertake a preliminary study of the potential application at Gramalote of pre-concentration by screening, part of the Grade Engineering suite. 160 samples of coarse assay rejects (-3 mm) were tested and showed one of the strongest responses seen worldwide to that time, suggesting that about 70% of the gold could be recovered into 40% of the mass. This was seen as potentially markedly improving the Gramalote economics. A large-scale testing program was implemented on site to follow up these results. A total of 18 samples of 17 t each were mined along a pre-existing exploration adit. A complex test flowsheet allowed size fractions to be generated from the as-received material as well as after crushing to 53, 23 and 3 mm, all from the same head sample. The procedures were designed after carrying out a heterogeneity study to measure sampling errors. The coarser size fractions were designed to study the effect of crushing on upgrade response and predict the response on open-pit run-of-mine ore. The finer size fractions were designed to investigate means of predicting the upgrade response across the orebody. The large-scale testing closely confirmed the average upgrade response as predicted from drill core assay rejects but found that only the -53 mm crushed material accurately predicted the upgrade response of individual samples. Ore geochemistry was able to usefully distinguish samples with good and poor response. A small study on drill core suggested that, for Gramalote, fine crushed material distinguishes vein associated and disseminated values but not other factors that control actual outcomes.

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. Following the Moura No 2 Wardens Court of Inquiry and subsequent changes to the Queensland Mining Legislation there is a requirement in Queensland coal mines for: a person with the recognised competencies to be appointed at each underground coal mine to the position Ventilation Officer; and the person is directly responsible for the implementation of the mine ventilation system and for the establishment of effective standards of ventilation for the mine. The Regulations require that an underground mine must have principal hazard management plans that provide for at the least the following: emergency response, gas management, methane drainage, mine ventilation, spontaneous combustion, and strata control. Other than strata control all the plans require the ventilation officer to have roles and responsibilities to develop, control, monitor and undertake actions in relation to these plans.There are also another 34 Regulations that either directly or indirectly requires the Ventilation Officer to take actions.The purpose of this paper is to outline the information that the regulators look for in sealing plans and the actions the regulators will take if the sealing does not go to plan (TARPs being exceeded).

Indian blast furnaces operate with coke gener- ally containing 24 to 28% ash compared to 10-15% ash in coke in most other parts of the world. The operating problems are further aggravated by the high alumina content and the adverse alumina to silica ratio in the ore. The above factors not only increase the coke rate but, at the same time, increase the flush slag volume, make the bosh slag highly limey and thereby viscous, and produce a flush slag containing 24 to 26% alumina. Relative- ly low flame temperatures (RAFT) make conditions more difficult. The high basicity of the bosh slag limits the maximum flush slag basicity to around 1.0, beyond which the burden movement is adversely affected by the viscosity of the bosh slag: This effect is partly controlled by operating blast furnaces with high MgO in the flush slag (around.10%), which also improves the desulphurizing power of slag. Steps are underway in some plants to inject lime through theòtuyeres to control the bosh slag basicity and also to neutralise the large quantity of silica which is released at the tuyere level from the coke ash, so that the silicon content of the hot metal can also be controlled. High bosh slag basicity coupled with the characteristics of iron ore/aggolmerates, widens the softening-melting zone and alters the shape of the softening-melting zone. This leads to operat- ing difficulties and poor hot metal quality. This paper discusses the above aspects of Indian blast furnace operation and steps being taken to surmount some of the above difficulties.
