I The South Platform of the Gippsland Basin is an extensive area of shallow basement covered by a relatively-thin Late Mesozoic-Cainozoic section. Although the sporadic exploration to-date has not resulted in any hydrocarbon discoveries, the area is under-explored and its taste potential has not yet been fully evaluated. The best potential appears to be in areas underlain by the Golden Beach Megasequence where structures are mainly related to basement fault blocks.

Iron ore in Australia is predicted to increase in its phosphorus content in the near future, which is detrimental to properties of steel product. Steelmakers are concerned by the content of phosphorus in iron ore will exceed limits for steelmaking and increase the converter slag ratio to molten steel, which will finally lead to a decline in competitiveness in high-grade steel production. In this paper, fundamental development of a dephosphorisation technique by reduction gasification is considered. Basic reduction examination was carried out using Australian and a synthetic model iron ore sample with phosphorus compound reagent, varying reaction time and composition of substances to find out suitable process condition for dephosphorisation. With successful lowering of phosphorus concentrations by gasification reduction of the iron ores, dephosphorisation was assumed and further elucidation works were carried out. More than 10 mass per cent of dephosphorisation ratio is obtained from Australian iron ore through batch-type 25 g furnace experiment using hydrogen as a part of reducible mixed gas. Lowering of phosphorus content occurred preferentially either in wustite or in another reducing zones, suggesting a relationship between reducing conditions to efficient dephosphorisation of iron ores. Another result of the fundamental experiment using a model sample with reagent is different dephosphorisation occurred with different reagents contributing to with unified reduction model for phosphorus, providing positive possibility for comparative evaluation, even if new morphologies of phosphorus in iron ore are clarified in future. According to these approaches, it is important to reduce iron ore efficiently and to avoid gasified phosphorus retaining and reattaching to adjacent iron ore particle at the same time. A kiln-type furnace is suggested to overcome previous technical issue, and additional experiments using larger rotating furnace were carried out for verification.

Managing water is a key aspect of mining, whether a site is in water surplus or water deficit. Water in tailings storage facilities (TSFs) needs to be managed carefully to maximise the density of the solids, maximise the re-use of available water and to minimise the risk of water overtopping the spillway in the event of heavy rainfall. Developing a water balance models is a standard method for monitoring the major flows of water around a site. However, models created by specialist consultants are often overly complex and are not suited to being used by process plant personnel after they have been handed over to the mine operator. Models typically offer information on water management at the time that they are created, but then ‘sit on the shelf’ and offer no further insight or value for operating mines. Advisian has developed a customised water balance model for a mine in Sub-Saharan Africa, which can be adapted to other locations, to assist in managing water at the site and in particular to predict the current and future water level and volume in the TSF under various rainfall scenarios. The model was developed using Microsoft Excel and requires no specialist skills to operate. Site personnel enter in daily production, water transfer and rainfall data and then view the output dashboards to observe the current water level and volume, decant rates, licensed water abstraction and water supply versus demand. The output dashboards were developed in close consultation with the client to ensure that all of the relevant key performance indicators were included, from the perspectives of all the key stakeholders. This modelling approach focusses on the needs of the people who will actually use the model to actively manage TSFs with the need to involve the model developer as part of ongoing operations eliminated. To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. "This paper reports on the long-term operation of a particle density meter (PDM) at the Bloomfield coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). This unit has been operating continuously for over three years, providing real-time data to the operators to allow the monitoring of flotation circuit performance. PDM outputs include slurry density, solids concentration on both mass and volumetric basis, and particle density. Knowing the average particle density of a stream allows for the optimisation of the process in real-time.The calibration of the solids concentration measurement device proved very difficult as the factory calibration techniques and existing laboratory analysis did not give accurate or reliable results. The solids concentration device had to be re-engineered and a new calibration method developed that gave accurate and repeatable results. Independent verification of samples taken from the PDM was undertaken as part of the trial process.The operational reliability of the PDM was a major point of investigation. The initial installation of the unit revealed issues with large, misplaced material of up to 20 mm periodically entering the unit, leading to feed blockages. The presence of these misplaced, oversized particles in the flotation circuit was resolved by installing innovative automatic back flush systems on the PDM.From a plant perspective the PDM has been an invaluable instrument that has enabled irregularities in the flotation circuit performance to be identified, which sampling had not and could not readily identify. This was achieved by close monitoring of real-time tailings composition on a minute by minute basis over short and extended periods. Variations in the tailings stream with respect to particle density and solids concentration were traced back to other issues in the plant. In addition, the PDM has allowed cell optimisation with respect to reagent dose rate to be improved. This study demonstrates the application of HyLogging™ technologies for mineralogical characterisation of different iron ore types throughout the Hamersley Province (Western Australia), including a channel iron deposit (Murchison Metals Ltd) and bedded iron deposits in the Brockman and Marra Mamba Iron Formations (BHP Billiton Ltd).Drill core from these deposits was analysed using CSIRO’s hyperspectral drill core logging systems (HyLogging systems), which are commercially available at the AMDEL and AMMTEC laboratories in Perth (Western Australia), through a leasing agreement. These HyLogging systems provide high resolution photographs at 0.1 mm pixel resolution as well as visible and infrared spectroscopic refl ectance data at 1 cm spatial resolution. The minerals identified include haematite, goethite and its subtypes (ie vitreous and ochreous goethite), AlOH-clays (kaolinite, Al-smectite and white mica), carbonates, gibbsite, chlorite, amphibole and hydrated silica as well as water content. The abundance and composition of these minerals was established from the spectral data and was validated against XRF analyses.The full potential of HyLogging systems in the iron ore industry is only starting to be unveiled, but some major benefits have already been demonstrated:• HyLogging systems can delineate different ore zones by mapping the vitreous and ochreous goethites. This has a potentially large impact in mine planning and operations, as hard, vitreous goethite and soft, powdery, ochreous goethite have different processing characteristics that can affect plant throughput if not carefully managed.• HyLogging mineralogy can also be used to support stratigraphic interpretations of the host, for example in subdividing the Dales Gorge 1 - 4 submembers of the Brockman Iron Formation.• HyLogging can have a potentially signifi cant impact on waste rock characterisation, as many of the waste materials can be identifi ed and quantifi ed with hyperspectral data (eg clay-type,• hydration state).• HyLogging can provide accurate three-dimensional (3D) mineralogy to iron ore companies that will empower them to improve future exploration and resource planning.• Application of high resolution photography to further improve ore deposit domaining is also to be considered.

The green field discovery of a two million ounce high-grade refractory gold ore deposit in the Indonesian Province of Sulawesi Utara, led Newmont to utilise its proven technical expertise in dry grinding and whole ore roasting to develop a 2000 tonne per day, 160 000 ounce per year operation in this remote and picturesque location.Located at an elevation of 250 in above sea level and ten kilometres to a deep water natural harbour, the hard rock open pit mine, process plant and infrastructure facilities were built to budget at a capital cost of US$132 million. The plant was commissioned with oxide ore, with the first gold poured in March 1996 and with refractory ore in January 1997. The operation rapidly met its production targets because of extensive forward planning and training programs developed for the local workforce. The presence of steep topography, fertile coastal plains, high rainfall, high seismicity of this location led to the decision to dispose of neutralised tailings in deep water off the coast instead of impounding tailings in a dam. This paper describes the development of the project and the challenges in developing a gold operation in a remote location which lacked infrastructure, the steps taken to ensure a smooth commissioning, and the selection of the workforce to operate a technically sophisticated facility.

The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

Newcrest’s Cadia concentrator operated from 1998 to 2012 with a traditional SABC grinding circuit treating Cadia open pit ore. The Cadia comminution circuit was well characterised through surveys and data that are available in the public domain, and became a benchmark standard for the industry and practitioners modelling large SAG mill based circuits. In 2012, the HPGR-based crushing circuit was introduced in front of the SAG mill to increase throughput when treating the Cadia East ore that was derived from an underground block cave. A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. "The Waihi Gold Mine (WGM) operated by OceanaGold New Zealand Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the OceanaGold Corporation of Australia. Traditionally WGM has stockpiled and processed separate campaigns of open pit and underground ore. The ore is processed via a conventional semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) / ball circuit (SABC). The low aspect SAG mill operates in a closed circuit with two 20" cyclones, whilst the ball mill is also a closed circuit with a 10" cyclone cluster. A major wall movement in April 2015 ceased open pit operations indefinitely, 18 months ahead of the mining plan. This immediately reduced the forecast mill tonnage leaving two options: begin campaign milling or change the operating strategy and target lower throughput. Additional cost pressures necessitated improved milling cost efficiency. The immediate ore restriction limited processing alternatives to within the existing major infrastructure. Available comminution circuit survey data laid the foundation for developing a comminution model using the JKSimMet™ software package (version 6, created by KJTech). A number of flow sheet variants were then evaluated based on predicted throughput and efficiency. The comminution models suggested opportunities for improved efficiency lay in reducing throughput and increasing utilisation rather than on/off campaign milling under the existing operating philosophy. A series of process alterations followed, delivering new cost efficiencies that maintained the current $/t processing cost. Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited operates the Macraes Gold Mine near Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. The orebody is mineralogically complex and comparatively low grade requiring a series of unit processes and resulting in a relatively complex plant. As part of Oceana GoldÆs ongoing Business Improvement program, a concerted effort has been made to focus on operational efficiency. One aspect of this has been the efficient use of energy in the gold recovery process. A benchmarking process has been developed for the Macraes operation that includes comparison with other operating mines and theoretical design. Criteria for determining operational efficiency have been developed. While benchmarking is, in theory, a simple process, this paper looks at putting benchmarking into practice by catering for variability in ore and associate processing methods. The unit processes discussed include the comminution circuit, flotation plant, pressure oxidation plant and gold recovery circuits.

Mining operations have large power requirements. The biggest consumers of energy are the drives for the mills located in the concentrators. Assuming that the decision is made on how many mills are needed and how big these mills will be, it can be determined how these mills should be driven. The decision as to which drive should be applied depends on design limits for different mechanical or electrical drives, anticipated operation modes, capital expenditure optimisation and lifecycle cost optimisation.The task for the engineer specifying the drive equipment is to select a drive solution that can debottleneck the operation, avoid interruption of production and enhance the reliability of the process. At the same time, the engineer must choose a design that enables cost optimisation either in a single investment or in relation to the total cost of ownership (TCO).This paper outlines different mechatronic or electric drive alternatives for tube or horizontal mills applied in the mining industry, along with their advantages and disadvantages. It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit is located at elevations of up to 3100 metres above sea level, in the Central Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, 35 km NNW of the Grasberg porphyry deposit. Wabu is a grass-roots discovery in an area with no previous gold mining history or record of gold mineralisation. A geological resource of 117.26 million tonnes at an average grade of 2.16 g/t Au (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) has been defined to-date. Mineralisation is hosted within a skarn occurring along the southern boundaries of the Late-Miocene age monzonite-diorite Pagane intrusive complex. The intrusive complex occurs in the footwall of a major EW structure, the Derewo fault, which displays sinistral strike-slip and reverse fault movement. The Derewo fault separates Derewo metamorphic units to the north from platform sediments of the Australian craton to the south. The skarn has a strike length of 6 km and is up to 1.5 km wide. It is developed within calcareous shelf sediments of the Tertiary New Guinea limestone group and is dominated by prograde garnet development. Gold mineralisation was deposited during retrograde alteration and is directly associated with arsenophyrite and bismuth minerals. Retrograde alteration is distinguished by a sequence of clinopyroxene , magnetite, epidote and hornblende, biotite and chlorite and lastly carbonate. Gold is associated with the biotite/ chlorite phase together with sulphides and precipitated as the result of fluid mixing. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit was identified in April 1990 during a regional program of helicopter assisted stream sediment sampling of -80 mesh (180 microns) fraction and panned concentrate sampling. The initial discovery sample site was situated 15 km down stream from the deposit and returned 1.49 ppm Au for the stream sediment sample and 138 ppm Au for the panned concentrate sample. A regional airborne helicopter magnetics survey, conducted in early-1992, helped defined the main magnetite associated skarn zone and the extent of associated igneous rocks. Detailed follow-up commenced in May 1992 and consisted of detailed mapping, soil sampling and ground magnetics prior to drilling the first hole in October 1992. Drilling to-date has delineated a contained geologic resource of 8.1 million ounces of gold and potential exists for a larger resource.

The current work deals with the measurement of some thermophysical properties of Ca(NO3)2 based ternary nitrate molten salts as HTF (heat transfer fluid) / TES (Thermal Energy Storage) material for CSP (Concentrating solar power) plants. The density and viscosity of different compositions of the ternary salt mixture containing Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3 and KNO3 close to the liquidus has been experimentally measured. An attempt has also been made to measure the melting point of the salt using the cooling curve technique as well as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis has also been performed to estimate the peak operating temperature of the salt. Compatibility of suitable pipe material (SS304) with molten salt has also been discussed. The salt mixture proves to be a viable alternative to the already existing HTFs like Therminol VP-1 (organic oil) or Solar Salt® in regards to its lower melting point, wider operating range, low cost, nontoxicity, sufficiently high density and comparable viscosity.

As underground mines become more geotechnically challenging with increasing depth and excavation size, the requirement for ground support to be installed as per design becomes more critical. The verification of installation quality for cable bolts and grouted rock bolts is difficult to assess. Current methods to control quality have limitations; pull testing is largely inconclusive with only extremely poor installation being identifiable. Audits during installation can only capture a small percentage of installed bolts. Following large rock mass displacement from either squeezing ground or seismic events, even previously well installed bolts may have yielded and require replacement. A method to provide an improved understanding of the reinforcement installation quality is Non- Destructive Testing (NDT) using acoustic reflection. To validate the accuracy of an NDT system, both plain and bulbed strand cable bolts were grouted in clear plastic tubes. The encapsulation grout quality was deliberately varied from full encapsulation through to partial encapsulation and a range of different size voids. The clear tubes allowed the ground encapsulation to be observed. Cable bolts strands were cut at varying lengths and different water cement grout ratios were used. Acoustic testing of the cable bolt specimens was completed blind; the technicians were not aware of what was being tested. The NDT results correlated well with the grout encapsulation, with differences between full encapsulation, minor voids and major voids being determined. The different water cement ratio and bolt lengths (including when partially cut) were also identifiable but with some discrepancies. Trials of the technology underground have also shown the data collection process to be relatively quick with each bolt taking 1-2 minutes to test, with interpretation of the results able to be completed soon after. The NDT results collected from the underground trial showed a wide variance in cable bolt grout encapsulation quality indicating that there were installation issues.

"In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. This paper provides an overview of Newmont’s diverse comminution circuits, discusses recent performance and offers some insight into optimisation and design considerations based on recent experience in both endeavours.Citation:Giblett, A and Hart, S, 2016. Extensive use of diesel-powered mobile equipment in modern mines for materials handling, such as load-haul-dump machines, constitute a significant source of heat, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter. Provision of sufficient quantities of fresh, cool air are required to remove such atmospheric contaminants from the environment for miners, particularly at depths where ventilation constraints and associated operating costs have an increasingly adverse impact. An alternative solution to diesel equipment to combat economic, environmental, social and health challenges, are battery electric vehicles (BEV), with the potential to expand production and substantially reduce ventilation and cooling demand, subsequently reducing operating costs. In this context, this paper focuses on the introduction of a battery electric loader to a diesel fleet at one of the deepest underground mines in Australia, the CSA Mine, a high-grade copper operation in Cobar, New South Wales. Analysis of a trial battery electric loader compared to existing diesel machines is performed with regards to infrastructure, technical and operational issues. Key benefits of battery electric vehicles over conventional diesel-powered vehicles are discussed, including lower energy consumption and greater efficiency, reduction of emissions and heat, reduced need for ventilation and lower operating costs. Challenges of introducing BEVs into an operation, along with the results from the comparative study are addressed under impacts to energy consumption, equipment selection, effects on ventilation and cooling, mine design and economic viability for future fleet implementation scenarios whilst meeting production targets.
