Python Underground Processing Plant Critical Design The use of continuous gravity recovery in combination with a controlled breakage fine crushing and screening system followed by flash flotation has been incorporated into the Python processing plant. This provides miners with a flexible, robust, low cost, low energy pre-concentration process for the recovery of gold and/or heavy minerals. The Python plant incorporates fine crushing utilizing either High Pressure Grinding Rolls or Vertical Shaft Impactors in combination with the InLine Pressure Jig and Flash Flotation to continuously liberate and recover the valuable minerals. The use of these technologies has enabled a narrow, transportable pre-concentration plant to be produced which can easily be installed and operated in underground drifts and tunnels.

Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. The Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal gold-silver deposit, located at the southern end of the Waitekauri Corridor, Hauraki Goldfield, occurs as quartz veins with associated alteration haloes. Integrated geophysical studies were undertaken to determine the expression, location, and extent of these alteration zones. Aeromagnetic data show an extensive, magnetic æquietÆ zone over Karangahake and the southern Rahu Ridge that represents a zone of magnetite destruction resulting from hydrothermal alteration. Analytic signal data are used to define the boundary of this zone; the resulting 6 km2 area is elongate north-south with an irregular boundary. A detailed gravity survey over the area reveals a positive residual gravity anomaly, up to 30 gu in amplitude, over the Karangahake deposit. Density measurements on near-surface rocks give low values indicating that the source of this positive gravity anomaly must be deep; possible causative bodies include an igneous intrusion or dense sulfide mineralisation. To the west and east of the host Waipupu Formation, strong gravity gradients of 100 gu/km and 65 gu/km reflect the faulted boundary of the Hauraki Rift, and the edge of the Waihi Basin respectively. High resolution airborne radiometric data define a 2.2 km2 area of potassium enrichment. This area is elongate north-south and has an irregular boundary. It coincides approximately with the centre of the magnetic quiet zone and the peak of the gravity high, and correlates with known areas of intense mineralisation. Anomalously high potassium counts and elevated K/Th ratios correlate with areas of potassic alteration that have undergone K-metasomatism. Underexplored portions of this zone may indicate areas of gold-silver prospectivity. Combined geophysical data therefore reveal the extent of hydrothermal alteration, and the central zone of Kmetasomatism that is most likely to contain orebodies.

The Golden Cross Mine is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 8 km northwest of Waihi. The project is operated as a Joint Venture with Coeur Gold New Zealand holding 800/0 and Viking Mining Limited with a 20% interest. The past open-pit and underground gold and silver producer has been in the reclamation phase of the operation for approximately 2.5 years and is now nearing completion. Although rehabilitation of the site is a regulatory requirement, the Closure Plan has been enhanced by the ongoing commitment of the Joint Venture to establish a sustainable land use for the site by commissioning engineered facilities designed to last for perpetuity. The Joint Venture identified six significant design features that were key to successful rehabilitation. These were the controlled placement of acid generating waste rock into engineered disposal sites; the design and placement of sealing layers over the waste rock disposal sites; the design and construction of diversion drains; the establishment and management of vegetation to protect the oxygen diffusion layer; a partial capping of the tailings to accelerate consolidation adjacent to the tailings dam embankment, and the implementation of a cyanide recovery circuit to recycle cyanide from the tailings prior to disposal. Another key to success for the project involved genuine consultation with all parties participating in the planning, evaluation, and consenting of the closure process at Golden Cross. The local and regulatory community has been widely represented in the Joint Venture's operating and closure plans throughout the history of the mine. Participants include: Regional and District Councillors and staff members, professional peer reviewers, environmental groups, local residents of the valley, and Iwi. This overall commitment to the project has resulted in a world-class rehabilitation program for the first modern metal-mine closure in New Zealand and we believe that collectively, the work done at Golden Cross is helping to set a standard for the success of future programs within the extractive industry.

In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

Andesites are a major source of aggregate for much of the North Island of New Zealand. There are regional differences with respect to some important properties of the andesites. Some are reactive with cement and are designated as potentially deleterious or deleterious by the concrete industry. Other andesites, particularly those that are slightly altered or weathered, have rather high Plasticity or Clay Indices and perform poorly in road construction.   The performance of the andesites has been investigated and can be shown to be determined by: +        the chemistry of the rock which in turn determines the chemistry of the glass in the rock; +        the presence of large amounts of groundmass glass in the rock; and +        the nature of the superimposed alteration processes. Environment of extrusion and how rapidly the rock has been cooled or chilled are also important as they determine the fabric of the rock and how much glass will be present in the rock.   There are three main types of alteration that affect the quality of the aggregate: 1.   hydrothermal alteration, 2.   late magmatic alteration associated with the devitrification of glass, and 3.   weathering.   Each of these alteration types produces different alteration minerals. In fresh andesites the devitrification of glass has an important affect on the rockÆs properties. The Taranaki andesites are shown to have unusually (in comparison with other North Island andesites) high Na2O contents, held in the groundmass glass, which is the fundamental reason for the high alkali û silica reactivity of these andesites.

On the southern flank ofLihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000 - 1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction-modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications' for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

Loy Yang Power (LYP) owns and operates a 2160 MW brown coal fired, base load power station in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia (Loy Yang A). It also owns and operates a brown coal mine that supplies fuel to its own power station and a nearby 1000 MW power station owned by International Power (LoyYang B). The mine supplies 32 Mt of coal per annum from an open pit, which is currently about 4 km long by 2 km wide and 180 m deep. LYP has 500 employees and a substantial amount of work is also carried out by contractors and consultants. GHD Pty Ltd(GHD) has been contracted to provide mine planning and earth sciences expertise. GHD is an international professional services company that operates globally in many market sectors including mining, industry and the environment. The company has major offices in Melbourne and also within the Latrobe Valley. This paper sets out the experiences that GHD and LYP have gained in establishing a unique alliance arrangement for GHD to provide a range of mine planning, earth science, dam surveillance and environmental services to LYP. The underlying philosophy of the alliance is to closely align the objectives of the two companies such that GHDÆs recompense for service delivery is proportional to the benefit achieved by LYPÆs business. Quality of service, whole of life costs and risk management are important aspects and are reflected in key performance indicators against which GHDÆs performance is measured. Currently GHD provide 20 000 hours of labour to LYP per annum, which are delivered by up to 120 staff who possess the required diversity of skills. The paper explains how the contract was initially let as a conventional service agreement and explains why the contract was transformed into an alliance. It then illustrates the operation of the alliance with reference to the 2006 work program. The paper concludes with thoughts on how the arrangement can be further developed for the future to the benefit of both parties.

OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.

With commodities suffering dramatically low real prices, mining business margins are under intense scrutiny. Unfortunately, management systems developed early this century for manufacturing are driving counterproductive behaviours that choke productivity. The paper and presentation will explain this and present a proven methodology for increasing productivity. This will be supported by operational examples from Australian and American mining management to demonstrate the importance of modern business performance measurement and analysis systems. It will explain the importance of management systems in driving organisational change to sustain superior productivity and margins. The paper will explain why many executives and managers confuse production (a measure of volume) with productivity (which measures efficiency and effectiveness). It will explain how this and other counterproductive managerial and operator behaviours and attitudes are driven by traditional business management systems exacerbated by managerial and consulting fads. The paper will begin with the simple principle that to improve results one needs to first improve the process producing the result û and will show how this is often violated. Improving productivity then boils down to:accurately identifying opportunities using sound, modern measurement, analysis and reporting systems; methodically improving operating and commercial processes, and changing peopleÆs behaviours and attitudes to sustain changes in practices. The paper will include fundamentals of applying sound measurement and analysis to:processes directly, eg cycle time charts and their impact in cyclical (non-continuous) operations commonly used in rock breakage; drivers of productivity; and process results themselves since correct analysis identifies opportunities accurately. The paper will cover the importance of practical leadership and the need to follow a simple, solid plan for changing systems that drive behaviour. Overall, it will highlight use of modern performance Measurement, Analysis and Reporting systems to drive behaviours and improve margins - without capital investment û and make executive and managerial work easier and more effective.

In the Ngakuru area zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lacustrine vitric tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation and two of the deposits are being mined. The Ngakuru Formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 240 ka, and is overlain by younger alluvial sands and gravels. Individual zeolite deposits contain 50 - 80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified vitric tuffs and are localised along NE-trending normal faults. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, Kfeldspar and smectite are also present. The zeolites and other minerals are very fine grained (<10 8m), with open meshes of crystals that result in high porosities (52 - 70 per cent) in mordenite-rich tuffs. Zeolitic tuff samples typically have cation exchange capacities of 80 to 110 meq/100 g and internal surface areas of 25 - 58 m2/g, which combine to give high liquid and odour absorption capacities. The first zeolite deposit (Mangatete) was found in 1992, and this and the Twist Road deposit are worked by quarry benching into the side of hills. The zeolitic tuffs are dried and crushed to produce a variety of products including adsorbents for soaking up oil/chemical spills and animal wastes, animal feed supplements, water treatment, and sports turf and slow release fertiliser. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits formed at shallow depth (<100 m) along fault zones from reaction of glass-rich tuff beds with groundwater-diluted geothermal water during the late Quaternary, and are as young as 8500 yr BP from 14C dating of plant material in sinter associated with the Mangatete deposit.

TheSan Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t Au, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70 - 100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the 'subvolcanic complex'. At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine.   Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry- related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

Active geothermal fields show many of the characteristics seen in hydrothermal ore deposits but there are important differences as well. There are, for example, many differences in geology and chemistry between individual geothermal fields, even some nearby, and these include variations in host rock types (volcanic, sedimentary, plutonic and metamorphic), structures controlling fluid flow (normal, lateral, and, rarely, reverse faulting occur) and hydrological setting (valleys to elevated terrain).

The paper outlines the successful application of some of the on-belt technologies available from Scantech International Pty Ltd and how these have provided benefits in a number of mining and mineral processing operations. Effective process control requires real time analysis so quality can be fed back to the previous process and fed forward to a subsequent process. A range of on-belt analysers that allows for full stream, continuous, non-contact analysis of conveyed materials is available to achieve this. Real time results can provide timely information for effective process control. Benefits of on-belt analysis systems become more evident once the true variability of material quality and moisture content in conveyed flows is measured. To obtain economies of scale in mineral processing operations large material flows are achieved using conveyors. The cost and effort to sample representatively increases as conveyor flows increase. One sample may represent a few tonnes or up to 10 000 tonnes of material. The turnaround time between sampling and availability of sample analysis data does not allow real time process control. Tonnage flow rate, moisture content and elemental or mineralogical composition are required to perform effective process control of most conveyed streams. Tonnages can be effectively measured using belt weighers. The analyses derived from small samples supplied by conveyor-based sampling systems contain high variability. On-belt, continuous analysers see all the material and, through short term compositing of analyses, supply less variable results. Real time analysis helps operators develop a better understanding of material variability. Analysers can be effectively utilised to improve the consistency of product quality through bulk sorting and blending control. Many existing users of the technologies have gained competitive advantages through their ability to supply a more consistent quality product to the market.

Seafield ResourcesÆ offshore placer gold project covers c.10 000 km2 of the Westland continental shelf between Karamea and Jacksons Head, from the low-water mark out to the 120 m isobath (Figure 1). De Beers Marine (DBM), the marine diamond subsidiary of the De Beers Group, will carry out the project with geological input from Placer Solutions (PSL). DBM bring a wealth of expertise and advanced technology to the project, developed during their 20 years of exploration and mining of diamond placers on the Atlantic shelf of southern Africa, where they have also maintained a strong environmental record.   Glaciers and high-energy rivers emanating from the Southern Alps have transported substantial quantities of gold bearing sediment onto the Westland continental shelf during Pleistocene glacial periods, when fluvial gradients are steeper, sea level is c.120 m lower and most of the shelf is exposed. These deposits have been extensively reworked by the advancing shoreline and marine processes during interglacial marine transgressions, and most are now buried beneath a variable thickness of post-glacial marine sand, silt and mud. DBM will use side-scan sonar, swath bathymetry, Chirp sub-bottom profiling and a magnetometer to map the sea floor and sediments beneath it, guided by PSLÆs predictive geological model for gold distribution on the shelf. Cactus grab and vibro-core samples will be used to ground-truth the geophysics and provide stratigraphic, sedimentological and gold distribution data for incorporation into the geological model. Areas of interest identified by the geophysical and sampling data will be investigated in more detail, with closer-spaced geophysics and Mega-drill sampling to a maximum sediment depth of 20 m beneath the sea floor. These samples will be raised to the ship with air-lift suction technology, processed onboard for mineralogical and grade information, then returned to the sea floor. Environmental baseline data will be gathered from Van Veen grab samples of seabed sediment taken throughout the area during the prospecting programme.

Hematite represents the vast majority of iron ore exported from Australia as the development and processing cost of magnetite is generally seen as a barrier to the development of vast magnetite resources. However, a number of magnetite projects have attracted a significant amount of interest and investment from large Chinese steelmakers.This paper compares the relative merits of the development of Australian magnetite and hematite ore from the point of view of the steelmaker, taking into account the factors that influence the capital costs of the development of the ore types and the relative costs of operating the process plants to treat these ores. By modelling the relative operating cost for the production of hot rolled coil in China for the two ore categories, the paper demonstrates the economic drivers behind the Chinese steelmakers’ large investments in the magnetite resources of Western Australia. It does this by estimating the potential value of magnetite concentrate to the steelmaker in the event that the maximum potential is realised by operating the blast furnace with a 100 per cent pellet burden.Under the conditions described, it was found that direct reduction (DR)-grade magnetite concentrate could command a price premium over 62 per cent Fe fines of up to 46 per cent (December 2014 on a cost and freight (CFR) basis). The corresponding premium for blast furnace (BF)-grade magnetite concentrate is 17 per cent, which demonstrates the dependency on grade.The capital expenses for a 14 Mt/a concentrate plant is estimated at US$3.1 B for BF-grade magnetite and US$3.35 B for DR-grade, with operating expenses at US$45 and US$50 respectively. The corresponding free on board price for a break-even net present value is calculated at US$82/t for BF-grade magnetite and US$90/t for DR-grade. The minimum long-term iron ore price (62 per cent Fe) that would be required to underpin such a project is estimated at US$78/t CFR for BF-grade magnetite and US$68/t CFR for DR-grade concentrate.Apart from the financial benefits, it is demonstrated that the use of magnetite concentrate in ironmaking has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 400 kg per tonne of hot rolled coil.CITATION:Mouton, A J J and Edwards, K, 2015.
