LAWRENCE ADDICKS, Douglas, Ariz.-It does not seem to me that the role played by carrying heat away from one surface to another has been brought out. A cellular construction prevents the motion of air currents. Also in the installation on the top of a reverberatory furnace, that Mr. Krieger mentions, where it stopped the cooling, there is besides the question of overheating. Another complex question, entirely apart from the necessity of not carrying a brick above a certain temperature, is that of not allowing acids and bases to come together at too high a temperature. J. W. BECKMAN.-What cements together the individual cells in the insulating material? Also, how does the material behave in the presence of acids and alkalies, both strong and weak? A. H. KRIEGER, New York, N. Y.-The material is formed or composed of myriads of lace-like skeleton remains of diatoms visible only -under a powerful microscope. The diatom lives in salt and fresh water. On the Pacific Coast there must have been an abundant life of the diatom, because the beds, still in existence in Southern California, are fully 1,000 ft. through, and are hard and strong, standing a pressure of more than 400 lb. per square inch. The beds must have been many ages in forming and the diatoms have become firmly packed together. The samples shown are typical of the entire deposit as it was formed at the bottom of the sea. The object of the present paper is to call attention briefly to a novel method of analyzing the action of the ordinary gravity stamp, which has not only thrown much light upon the exact motion of the stamp-head, but promises also to be of value in determining the efficiency of a new mill before setting it to its work of crushing, and in this respect should be of service to constructors of mining machinery as well as to mining engineers. The method was devised by Mr. D. B. Morison, and developed in connection with his experiments on the comparative crushing-effects of his patent high-speed stamp and the ordinary cam-stamp, which were carried out at the works of Messrs. L. Richardson & Sons, Engineers, Hartlepool, and on which he read a paper at Newcastle in 1897.* Mr. Morison's experiments were of a very exhaustive nature; and having been consulted by him during his investigations, I had frequent opportunities of examining the methods employed and the results obtained. Experiments were first made with an apparatus resembling the indicntor of a steam-engine, inasniuch as the drum revolved alternately backwards and forwards, thus producing a closed diagram. This form was not found satisfactory, and it was therefore altered so as to cause the drum to revolve continuously in one direction, thus giving a continuous or open diagram. The arrangement is shown in plan in Fig. 1; a collar, A, surrounds the stamp-stem loosely and works between the guides B, B, which constrain it to move in a vertical line only. This paper has been prepared at the suggestion of Mr. Dunbar D. Scott, to supplement his " Evolution of Mine-Surveying Instruments."† Before entering into a detailed history of solar instruments, a few remarks will be made touching upon land-surveys in general, and on what has led to the development of these instruments.The oxidation of metals melted in contact with air takes place with dissimilar results. Tin, lead or zinc are examples of a class, the oxides of which float on the surface of the melted metal. First a film is produced, which covers the surface; then, if agitation from any cause exposes new metal to the action of the air, additional oxidation takes place, and the film is increased in volume. This change goes on until a considerable quantity of oxide (or " dross," as it is technically called) is formed; depending, of course, upon the duration of the exposure of the metal to the atmosphere. When such metals are poured, the dross may be skimmed off; and clean metal will be left underneath. The removal of such oxides is, therefore, merely a mechanical process. In the case of copper, however, the result is quite different. The sub-oxide of copper (Cu2O) is readily soluble in molten copper; and therefore, instead of the formation of a film of oxide, to be finally removed as dross, the surface of the metal remains bright and clear, because the oxide has been dissolved as soon as it was produced. It is customary in the process of copper-refining to leave a small quantity of oxide in the metal, in order to oxidize any traces of bismuth, arsenic or antimony which have not been entirely removed. The rapidity of oxygen steelmaking has created renewed interesl in the mechanisms and kinetics of the various processes involved. These studies can now be approached with increased confidence because of the more adequate thermodynamics, physical chernislry, and relevant engineering infornzation available. These combine to offer promise of useful control and automation if the details of each specific problem can be sufficiently well-defined. The hot filament microscope provides new insig-hi into many of these problems by direct observation at temperature, allowing the appraisal of the relative importance of thermal gradients, convection, and intermediate phases. All of these have a direct bearing on the overall rates and control of most pyrometallurgical processes. It is one of the special privileges of the Howe Lecturer to become better acquainted with this distinguished man. All of us interested in the metallurgy of iron and steel have developed some sense of his widespread influence by the annual reference to his work in these Memorial Lectures. Each lecturer since 1923 has been able to identify his personal specialty with the broad interests of Professor Howe. This has become even more rewarding with the background information from Professor Gensamer's monograph, "Henry Marion Howe's Contributions to Metallurgy, which brings out his happy combination of intellectual and professional activities. Beyond this, I found my personal bond with Professor Howe in his book on The Metallurgy of Sleel first published in 1891.' The ideal fuel for burning ceramic wares is the one that, among other characteristics, has little or no sulfur. For that reason wood was long considered the most desirable fuel but its high cost has practically eliminated its use except in regions where it is very abundant or other circumstances warrant its choice. The fuels commonly employed are natural and producer gas, oil, and coal. The last named is undoubtedly the most important, not only in this country but abroad. Occasionally anthracite is used but the larger part is bituminous. The quality of the coal used depends on the kind and the value of the products being manufactured. For some materials, such as common brick, hollow block, etc., the quality of the coal is of less importance than in the manufacture of polychrome terra cotta, pottery, porcelain, etc. It is obvious that in burning clays that contain notable amounts of pyrite, marcasite or gypsum, as is the case with many common clays, the sulfur content of the fuel is of much less importance. The permissible amount of sulfur in the coal used will depend on the kind of product being manufactured. "A good sample1 of coal commonly used in pottery ovens has something like this quantity of sulfur: total sulfur, 1.20 per cent.; sulfur in ash, 0.11 per cent.; volatile sulfur, 1.09 per cent." This is based on English pottery practice. Correspondence with a. number of leading manufacturers in this country has produced the following figures: Sanitary Ware.—(a) 1.0 per cent, maximum, (b) 0.5 per cent. Sewer Pipe.—(a) 1.2 per cent., (b) 1.1 per cent, present run, 3.0 per cent, has been used. Terra Cotta.—(a) 0.5 per cent, basis of contract, 1.0 per cent, approximate. Pottery.—1.0 per cent, contract, 1.5 per cent, probable content. Enameled Brick.—1.3 per cent, maximum, (a) and (6) designate different firms giving figures. The fourth National Exposition of Chemical Industries will be held in the Grand Central Palace, New York, during the week of Sept. 23, 1918. Dr. Bacon, of the advisory committee, is now head of the Chemical Warfare Section of the National Army, and a member of General Pershing's staff. The coming Exposition will be the largest ever held, and it will be necessary to use four floors of the Grand Central Palace. The exposition is a war-time necessity, and regarding it as such, each exhibitor is planning his exhibit so that it will be of. the greatest benefit to the country.

Introduction The principal thrust of the US Department of Energy (DOE) coal preparation R&D program is to develop technology to reduce ash and sulfur content of US coals to levels where the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. The coal preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas - coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations.

Copper concentrates produced by many operations in the United States and South America contain chalcocite (79.9% Cu) as a major component, yet the grades of these concentrates rarely exceed 25 to 28% Cu. Mineralogical studies made by E.P. Cadwell indicated that the low grades were caused by dilution by pyrite rimmed with secondary chalcocite. Laboratory and plant tests proved that concentrates could be significantly upgraded by using a simple, low cost cyanide leaching technique to dissolve the rims and reject the pyrite. The many advantages of this new procedure are cited and the process steps and a typical flowsheet are described.

Simulation as a mathematical technique is not new. However, recent increases in digital computer speeds and the ease of programming with languages such as Fortran have centered a good deal of attention around simulation in the last few years. By ignoring all but the relevant characteristics of a process, a mathematical simulator may be constructed which, when fed operating data, should react as the process would. The output becomes numbers, instead of tons, however. Thus, a trial-and-error operation of such a simulator will permit management to study a major system change at little cost.

The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc. and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the `New Missouri Lead Belt'. Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated 1100 ft below the surface at an elevation 270 ft above sea level, the flat lying sinuous orebodies are up to 250 ft wide, 85 ft high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite.

In 1976, a decision was made to install a conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 miles) from the new Eisenhower mine to Twin Buttes. The system, supplied and installed by Cable Belt Ltd., of England, represents a radical departure from conventional conveyor systems. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes while the belt acts only as the carrying medium. Features of the system are a single 2240-kW (3000-hp) drive and a 60° angle bend. Construction was completed in two years and full production was attained alter several mouths operation.

This study examines the structural framework of the Southwest for evidence of the four principal trends of lineament tectonics. It attempts to classify their intersections and compares the positions of those trends that appear most favorable with the positions of the presently known mining districts. This is a controversial topic. The author, in presenting his analysis, is aware that the study of lineament tectonics and relation of ore districts to regional structure is complicated by insufficient data and, unavoidably, by personal bias. The development of lineament tectonics has been summarized by Umbgrove.' Early attempts to fit ore districts into the Cordilleran framework were made by Billingsley and Locke, who do not refer to lineament tectonics, although their appoach is similar; they observe that heat and fluids, including the ore-depositing fluids, are most likely to rise at or near intersections of major structures where the crust is fractured, or weakened, to great depth. As a result of studies distributed over the earth-including ocean basins as well as continents— some tectonists recognize four dominant structural trends: 1) northwest; 2) northeast; 3) nearly east-west, or equatorial; and 4) nearly north-south, or meridional. Baker' proposed a theory to account for these trends and Sonder" called their world-wide arrangement the regmatic shear pattern. Moody and Hill proposed a much more complicated shear network which, although fascinating and perhaps ultimately useful, will not be followed here. In a recent review of deformation within the Cordillera, Wisser mentioned the four fundamental directions. The fact that many geologists deny the existence of the regmatic shear pattern implies that the fundamental structures are far from obvious. It may mean, also, that some geologists are not accustomed to examine regional and world maps analytically. The maps require much study, and certain features should be isolated on overlays. Even so, with the present limited knowledge, uncertainties remain. The following analysis is a qualitative experiment, subject to change as information accumulates, and should be supplemented by the western sheet of the Tectonic Map of the United States.' Many have probably gained the impression that the Cordillera of the West is oriented northwest-southeast and from this, unless experience rules otherwise, it is natural to assume that the structure likewise trends northwest-southeast. To an important extent this is true, yet anyone tracing off the western sheet of the Tectonic Map all the recorded north west-southeast structures may be surprised to see what a small part of the entire area they occupy. In southwestern U. S. (Fig. 1) the northwest-southeast structures are mostly restricted to the eastern, southern, and western parts. The eastern margin of the Cordillera from northern Colorado to the International Boundary near El Paso, Tex., is obviously determined by some structure other than northwesterly ones. In eastern Nevada and far southward toward the Gulf of California many mountain ranges, valleys, and faults are meridional. In the Rocky Mts. of Colorado, and at many places in southern Arizona, the crystalline Pre-Cambrian is foliated northeast-southwest. The Uinta Mts. of Utah trend approximately east-west, in much the same way as a broad belt of transverse, west-northwest structures—the Texas lineament of Hill",' and Ransome10 in southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and southern California. It seems, then that there are four regmatic shear directions in the Southwest, but at many places they are discontinuous, and their projections must be inferred. To clarify these trends the four sets have been isolated into two systems: 1) northwest-northeast and 2) east-west-north-south (Figs. 2 and 3). Northwest-Northeast System: A number of prominent northwest-trending zones of structure are easily recognized. They are designated by circled Roman numerals, the northeast-trending structures by circled capital letters. Perhaps no two geologists would agree completely on the positions of all these belts. Names given below are for convenience only, and may be discarded where other names have priority. (I) The Sierra Nevada-Lower California belt contains the Jurassic-Cretaceous granitic massifs of the Sierra Nevada and Lower California. These

ALL of the matters so far taken up by the Institute Committee on Stabilization of the Coal Industry will be of help, but it seems to be that under present conditions not very much can be expected until the railroad situation has been improved. As an instance of this, I would cite the fact of our experience at our mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. During 1917 and 1918 at our West Virginia plants we produced for our own consumption, practically entirely in the Chicago district, about 4,750,000 net tons of coal. In 1919 our output was reduced to 3,500,000 tons, this being caused partly by the shortage of orders in the few months following the armistice, but more particularly by The car shortage which began last September and continued throughout the remainder of the year, with the exception of December. This car shortage has been more acute since the first of the year, and while we now have an actual capacity here of 20,000 tons daily and have the equipment to produce it, with the possible exception of a few houses, we are able to average only about 12,000 tons, and in consequence, about 30 per cent. of our by-product ovens in the Chicago district are idle, and a number of blast furnaces are down for the want of coke. These figures, of course, refer to conditions before the strike of switchmen in April was started.

ALTHOUGH the main constituents of Portland cement are the oxides of calcium, silicon, aluminum, and iron, characteristics of the cement are seriously affected by such contaminants in the raw materials as magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, sulfur, and others of lesser importance. Sources of cement raw materials comprise a long list of minerals occurring in nature in various degrees of purity. The calcareous raw materials are generally limestone of purity varying from calcite to cement rock (a low-grade limestone of natural, almost correct chemical composition), chalk, marl, seashells, coral, and coral sand. The argillaceous raw materials supplying silicon, aluminum, and iron are mainly various forms of clay and shale, to which may be added silicious sand, iron ore, bauxite, or kaolin for minor adjustment of the chemical composition. The quality of Portland cement in this country, as in most parts of the world, is controlled by rigid specifications limiting both its chemical and physical characteristics, and cement manufacturers must comply with these specifications to market their products. Brandon Raw Materials: An unusual deposit of marl, limestone, and clay occurs 12 miles east of Jackson, Miss., near the village of Brandon. The deposit is of sedimentary origin and of relatively young geological age. Layers of marl vary from putty-like consistency to such hardness that it can be cut with a knife. Interspersed between the layers of marl are bands of limestone varying from very soft to hard. the compressive strength of the hardest layers exceeding 15,000 lb per sq in. The layers of marl range in thickness from a few inches to about 25 ft. The limestone bands seldom exceed 2 to 3 ft but often occur in thinner veins in the quarry face. Above the top layer of the deposit, which may be marl or limestone, a layer of clay ranges in thickness from a few inches to more than 20 ft. Part of this clay is harvested with the raw material to supply part of the argillaceous components, but most of it is stripped as overburden and wasted. A highly silicious clay of extreme fineness, harvested from the bottom of the quarry below the marl and limestone bands, is to correct the silica content. Fig. 1 shows typical examples of the interrelation of the various materials, based on drill logs obtained during exploration of the deposit. The marls vary in moisture content in the bank from 15 to 30 pct and contain up to 70 pct -200 mesh particles and up to 40 pct —10 p particles. A large percentage of the fine fraction is within the colloidal range, making the marl extremely sticky. The limestone beds range in hardness from that of the hardest marl to a medium hard limestone and in moisture content from 2 pct to approximately 14 pct. The line of demarcation is often difficult to draw and the moisture content is possibly the best means of classification. The ratio of soft to hard material is not constant throughout the deposit, but the average is approximately 70 pct soft to 30 pct hard material. Through the years this deposit had been repeatedly explored by cement companies and rejected as unsuitable for cement manufacture, mainly because of physical characteristics. In 1950, after careful exploration of the deposit and comprehensive laboratory and pilot plant tests of the raw materials, officials of Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. of Chicago were convinced that a practical and economical method of processing the raw materials had been devised and authorized construction of a new plant that began production in December 1951. Marl and limestone, common raw materials for Portland cement, usually occur in such a manner that they can be worked separately. Their harvesting and processing normally have presented no difficult problems, as standard equipment and methods are available for handling either sticky or hard materials. No other cement plant utilizes a deposit of the nature of that at Brandon, however, and for this reason no prior art was available for design. When properly blended, the raw materials produced an excellent cement without additives. Basic problems to be solved in designing the cement plant were:
