The occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note.' This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. Method of Preparation The material in which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400" C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of traveling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection. Measurements The wire in the etched state was next mounted in a goniometer of special form which allowed the measurement of the spherical coordinates of the normals to any plane surfaces left by the etching. These coordinates were most conveniently a polar distance, 8, from one direction of the wire axis, and an azimuth or longitude, ?, from an arbitrary prime meridian. The region to be described more particularly is shown at a low magnification in Fig. 1, which gives two different views, differently illuminated to show the spatial relationship of a crystal occupying most of the part shown and of an inclusion, or rather a series of three inclusions suspected of being twins based on the principal crystal.

King, Bozeman, Mont.: The form of measuring up ore in sight looks very plausible, as illustrated in the paper of Mr. Emmons, but from my experience of many years of mining in Montana and Nevada, I have found it is very hard to measure up anything nearer than a guess of what you have in sight, except in the case of a true vein, or a flat vein where the boundaries are well defined. I have been interested in several miues with Dr. A. R. Ledoux, and I know that my foreman and myself, going into the mines and using our best judgment, could seldom see more than 30 days' supply actually in sight, and yet we were running from 100 to 250 tons a day, and keeping it up year after year. Prof. John D. Irving, New Haven, Conn.: I understand from Mr. Emmons that this is a method which has been found applicable in the copper-mines in Tennessee, where the record could be made with a good deal of accuracy, and where the work in the mines allowed the necessary development to be done, so that the record could be kept up. I do not think there was any intention in his mind to imply that this was applicable to all cases, especially such as Mr. King has mentioned. President Charles Kirchhoff, New York, N. Y. : I think the point is that the paper impresses the necessity for doing it where the possibilities exist. There has been too little attention given to this very matter, particularly in the United States; but I think our English friends are following it very much more zealously, and the demand for it there is possibly greater than it is here, because English boards of directors handle mines that are often very much further away than our own are, and the English public and the English engineers generally are very much more insistent upon seeing how much longer current dividends are going to last, or current assessments are going to continue.

DuriKg explorations made for the Pacific Improvement Company in the early part of this year, deposits of natural coke, of such extent and excellent quality as to be worthy of record, were found in the Santa Clara coal-field. This coal-field lies in the neighborhood of La Barranca, a small town, 95 miles northeast of Ortiz, on the Sonora railway. The coal-beds are exposed in the drainage-basin of Calera creek, which empties into the Yaqui river opposite Toniche; and the old mining town of Turahumari is nearly at the center of the field. Without going into a detailed geological description, it Will be sufficient to say that the entire area is underlain by rocks of Triassic age, much disturbed in places, and cut through and covered by eruptive rocks of various kinds and ages. The coal-beds occur in a series of interbedded sands and clay, in the upper half of the sedimentary Triassic rocks. Below them is a great series of quartzitic sandstoiles and very sandy slates, and above them are other sandstones, and the eruptive member of the group, viz., the Lista Blanca formation', described in my paper on the " Geology of Sonora," presented at the New York Meeting of February, 1899.* Speaking very broadly, these sands and clays, with their included coal-beds, dip about 30 degrees S.E. The subject of refractory materials occupies such an important position in all metallurgical works, and particularly in those of iron and steel, that any data concerning it must be of interest to the metallurgist. No apology is needed, therefore, for this attempt to describe the mining of fire-clay and the manufacture of fire-brick at one of the largest establishments in this country. Mount Savage is a small village situated in the northwestern part of the Cumberland coal basin, on the Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad, and at the foot of Savage Mountain, from which the village takes its name. Fire-brick have been manufactured here almost, if not quite, as long as in any place in America; and as the brick are still shipped to nearly half the States in the Union every month, the manufactory is probably the most generally known. In the year 1837, a company was formed called the Maryland & New York Coal & Iron Company. It built two blast-fiirnaces, the ruins of which still remain. It was in the construction of these filmaces that the first fire-brick made here were used ; and though the iron works ran but spasmodically, the brick works have been in constant operation ever since. The use of ultrasonics in forming emulsions is not new. As early as 1927 Wood and Loomis' reported preparation of emulsions with ultrasonics. In 1935 Rschevkin and Ostrawskyz described the use of great ultrasonic power in producing fine emulsions of various oils and paraffin in water. Recently Oyama and Tanakahmployed ultra-emulsification to increase the effectiveness of sodium ethyl xanthate in flotation of chalcopyrite and galena. An emulsion is a two-phase system consisting of two incompletely miscible liquids, the one being dispersed as finite droplets in the other. The dispersed liquid is known as the internal or discontinuous phase, and the surrounding liquid is termed the external or continuous phase. There are two types of emulsions; one is oil-in-water (O/W) and the other water-in-oil (W/O). The word oil refers to the liquid other than water. Circumstances exist in which the emulsion type is not clearly defined, and the internal and external phases both contain portions of the opposite phase. This is said to be a dual emulsion. Among the many hypotheses', 6v proposed for the formation of emulsions, the Bancroft's adsorbed film or double interfacial tension theory is widely accepted. Bancroft ""educed that in the process of emulsification the interfacial tension between oil and water is lowered by the formation of an emulsifying film, which contains the adsorbed molecules and/or ions from the emulsifying agent and the two liquids.

A DIATREME is a hole blown through a rock by gases, presumably of volcanic origin. Not all pipes of ore have formed by deposition of metals in such openings, but a considerable number have so formed. In this paper are described peculiar vein patterns that are believed to be incipient diatremes or "perforation pipes." Grading into this group is one showing thorough brecciation without rotation of fragments and into the latter a group of ore pipes showing brecciation with rotation of fragments-many of them with well rounded fragments. Also, volcanic craters or volcanic necks are explosion pipes. These may carry ore deposits along their contacts and some carry deposits within the pipes. As new data appear this group becomes increasingly impressive. It has been shown that veins are concentrated in and about cupolas of batholiths and that such veins commonly lienearly parallel to the long axes of cupolas as these are shown on plans. It would be supposed that conical cupolas would have radial patterns, but few vein systems exhibit radial patterns. It is probable that explosion pipes also may form in areas above conical cupolas. From these the gases escape more violently because the loads above them are less than above an elongated cupola where larger bodies of rock are affected. The hypothesis is sound mechanically, for the top of an elongated cupola is a line whereas the top of a conical cupola is a point.

ON FEBRUARY 13, 1953 the Miami Copper Company signed a contract with the United States Government, through the Defense Materials Procurement Agency, whereby it under- took, with a base price of 27.359 per lb (subject to escalation based on wage scales and wholesale-price indices), to exploit a new ore body in its mine in Gila County, Arizona. Recoverable ore was estimated at 23,000,000 tons, averaging about 0.677 per cent copper. Moreover, the proportion of oxidized copper, difficult to recover by flotation concentrating, was so high that an average net recovery of only ten pounds per ton (0.5 per cent) was expected. The company proposed to mine the ore by the underground method known as undercut block-caving. Unfortunately the ore body, as has been true of all Miami's ore bodies, lay so deeply buried that no possibility existed of adopting opencut mining as has been done in recent years at Miami's neighbors, Ray and Inspiration. Probably the most distinctive characteristic of Miami's operations has been the extent to which it has developed and improved methods and equipment for underground mining. True, necessity was a potent stimulant, because its available ores since 1926 have been exceptionally low-grade; so, if the enterprise were to survive, it was necessary to keep costs at the minimum. This fact does not detract, however, in any way from the remarkable achievements of Miami engineers in conducting efficient and low-cost underground mining.

Copper production in the. United States in 1972 amounted to 1,658,000 tons according to the USBM. This figure is up over 1971 but falls below 1970 production of 1,719,101 tons. This report is essentially about the status of copper mining operations in the U.S. and is an update and expansion of the report "Southwest Copper-A Position Survey" published in [A=], October 1965. At that time, the trend was toward using larger equipment to mine lower grade ore and toward the expansion of dump leaching practice. That trend continues today but, it is overlain by intensive activity to comply with existing environ¬mental legislation and uncertainty over proposed revisions of venerable laws governing mining. In the U.S. today there is, practically speaking, no excess smelting capacity so that expansion of copper production through the startup of new mines is inhibited. Owners of a large undeveloped orebody would have to decide before going into production whether to sell the concentrates offshore, which has many problems, whether to try one of several unproved chemical processes for producing refined metal from concentrates or embarking on the construction of a traditional pyrometallurgical plant in the face of considerable uncertainty over the pollution standards that eventually must be met. The situation is such that not only is the present rate of U.S. copper production threatened but the ability to meet projected increased demand in the years ahead may have been severely retarded.

THE sheet-ground deposits of the TriState district, because they are fairly uniform in thickness (7 to 11 ft.)-rather flat, with an easy dip to the west-and cover a large acreage, offered a problem of improved transportation. Heading advance in this kind of mine is very rapid and track haulage requires a larger crew of trackmen than do other mines, and a heavy investment in track. The use of some type of rubber-tired truck equipment for underground haulage was under consideration for some time by the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The nature of some ore bodies made them not adaptable to truck haulage and some mines that did offer possibilities were equipped with other types of haulage, and the expected savings by the use of trucks did not offset the loss of investment that would be incurred in discarding other equipment. The decision was made to sink a new shaft, designed for skip hoisting, on the Blue Goose ore body, and then develop truck equipment. DEVELOPING TRACTORS AND TRAILERS A study was made of internal-combustion engines for power units in the tractors, but the extreme difficulty of controlling air circulation, and the heavy cost of drilling large churn drill holes for blower installations, led to the adoption of a tractor with a storage battery. The storage-battery tractor that was on the market for mine haulage was impossible to obtain because all were needed for defense work. Several standard electric-truck chassis were purchased and rebuilt in the Eagle-Picher shops. The steering wheel was shortened and set vertical, permitting the driver's seat to be moved forward, and the frame was shortened enough to take the battery box and the fifth wheel support that carried the gooseneck of the dump trailer. The fifth wheel, or turntable, is of the ball and socket type. Fig. I shows the ball fastened to the gooseneck. The socket is split to permit introduction of the ball and is held by through-bolts, and the socket is welded to a ½ -in. plate, which in turn is attached to the tractor frame. Smaller wheels and tires were put on to reduce over-all height. If it had been necessary, the springs could have been reversed, or taken off entirely, to gain additional clearance. The tractors are equipped with 48-cell, 23-plate, 400-A.H. batteries. With the initial tonnage and mileage, the batteries were about 50 per cent down at the end of a shift. Tractors have truck tires 7.50 by 20, 8-ply, front and rear, the rear being dual. After four months of use, the tires are beginning to show signs of failure.* In

Fe-V alloys with small percentages of vanadium show no deviations from Sieverts' Law up to P~, = 1 atm in the 1600º to 1750ºC region. At somewhat under 8 pct V and up to at least 20pct V, at 1604" and 1661 °C, nitrogen absorption follows Sieverts' Law at low Pn2 values, but deviates from this law beyond critical values of pn2, due to formation of a nitrzde phase of approximately VN composition. The behavior below these solubility limits can be described at all temperatures by the equations: RAO and parlee1 suggested that the nitrogen absorption curve for liquid iron alloys takes the general form shown in Fig. 1 when an alloy nitride precipitate is formed. They showed that the precipitation of 6 titanium nitride from liquid Fe-Ti alloys follows this general scheme and dealt with the general theory involved. Recently, Evans and Pehlke2 reported their research on the precipitation of aluminum nitride from liquid Fe-A1 alloys. Fountain and Chipman's recent paper3 on the precipitation of boron nitride from solid solution contains a fine example of the analogous behavior which they have been studying in the solid state. Researches on the absorption of nitrogen by liquid Fe-V alloys have been described by various authors.1,4-7 Most of this work has been confined to fairly low vanadium concentrations and rather high temperatures because of difficulties variously described as, formation of surface scums, bridging, and so forth. This behavior and the rough thermo- dynamic calculations made by chipman,8 over eleven years ago, indicated that excessively high vanadium concentrations should not be required for vanadium nitride precipitation. It seemed desirable to look for and study this precipitation in order to fill out the thermodynamically interesting nitrogen absorption data on these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The general method used was essentially the same as employed by Rao and parlee,1 in which a Sieverts type of apparatus was used and the precipitation of the nitride detected by the "break-point" in the Sieverts' Law line, and by the visual observation of the formation of the new phase on the surface of the melt. There were, however, a few differences in apparatus and technique as described below. The oil manometer used by Rao and parlee' to measure low partial pressures of nitrogen was not employed. The present authors sought to avoid as much as possible the exposure of the liquid alloy to low total pressures of gas during the 6 to 10 hr long runs because of the heavy iron evaporation-loss errors involved. This was achieved, partly by keeping evacuation times to a minimum with fast pumping but largely by the use of two burettes, one for argon and one for nitrogen, and using them to equilibrate the alloy with mixtures of argon and nitrogen rather than nitrogen alone. The history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers in the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribes in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections. It is universal in South Africa to speak of the Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a a boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

DURING the investigation of the electrical transport properties of copper, it became necessary to prepare large single crystals of the highest obtainable purity. In an effort to meet these demands, single crystals of copper have been grown by the conventional pulling technique—as has been used for the growth of germanium and silicon crystals.' Low-temperature resistance measurements made on these crystals show that, as far as their electrical properties are concerned, they are generally of significantly higher purity than the original high-purity material. The use of these pure single crystals with very high resistance ratios has made possible the acquisition of detailed information regarding the electron energy band structure of copper2-' and has stimulated widespread effort on Fermi surface studies of a number of other pure metals. It is the purpose of this note to describe our method of preparing very pure copper crystals by the Czochralski technique. Precautions were taken to prevent contamination of the melt from the crystal growing apparatus. A new fused silica growing chamber was used to prevent possible contamination from previous groqths of other materials such as germanium, silicon, and so forth. A new high-purity graphite crucible was used to contain the melt. This crucible was baked out in a hydrogen atmosphere at -1200°C for an hour, prior to its use in crystal growth. Commercial tank helium, containing uncontrolled traces of oxygen, was used as the protective atmosphere. A trace of oxygen in the atmosphere appears to be necessary for obtaining high-purity copper single crystals. A 3/8-in-diam polycrystalline copper rod of the same purity as the melt was used as a seed. The copper rod was allowed to come in contact with the melt while rotating at 57 rpm. When an equilibrium was observed between the melt and the seed (that is, the seed neither grew nor melted), the seed was pulled away from the melt at a rate of 0.5 mils per sec. As the seed was raised, the melt temperature was slowly increased, so that the grown material diminished in diameter with increasing length. When this portion of the grown crystal was -1 in. long and the diameter reduced to less than 1/8 in., the melt was slowly cooled and the crystal was allowed to increase to - 1-1/4 in. diam as it was grown. By reducing the diameter of the crystal in this manner, the number of crystals at the liquid-solid interface was decreased until only one crystal remained. Fig. 1 shows a typical pulled copper single crystal. The purity of the starting material and the crystals was determined by the resistance ratio method: where the ratio is taken as R273ok/R4.2ok. The starting material, obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co., was the purest copper available. Most of the pulled copper crystals had much higher resistance ratios than the starting material. The highest ratio obtained to data is 8000. Table I is an example of the data obtained from some of the copper crystals. Note that Crystal No. 126 had a lower resistance ratio than its starting material and this might be due to carbon in the melt. The melt of this crystal was heated 250" to 300°C above the melting point of copper. At this temperature it was observed that copper dissolved appreciable amounts of carbon. The possible presence of carbon at the interface between the liquid and the crystal will result in reducing conditions and negate the slight oxidizing condition required for high purity as discussed below. The possible explanations of the improvement in the copper purity compared to the starting material are: improvement in crystal perfection, segregation, and oxidation of impurities. Of these, the latter seems to be most probable. A study of the etch pits in the pulled crystals showed them to have between 107 and 108 pits per sq cm. The etch procedure used was developed by Love11 and Wernick.10 The resistivity of the purest copper crystal grown was 2 x 10-10 ohm-cm at 4.2oK; from the work of H. G. vanBuren,11 the resistivity due to the dislocations would be approximately 10-l3 ohm-cm, which indicates that. the dislocations in the copper crystals would contribute relatively little to the resistivity of the crystals at this purity level. Segregation does not seem likely as the reason for purification of the material, since the resistivity of the first-to-freeze and the last-to-freeze portions are approximately the same, as was observed on Crystal No. 124. REVIEWS on the applications of optical ellipsometry to the study of polycrystalline metal surfaces and oxidation-corrosion processes have been presented by Kruger and Hayfield, and white.' In view of the ability of this method to measure differences in film thicknesses to below 10A, ellipsometry was used to study nitrogen chromium surface reactions during the early stages of growth. Chromium specimens in the form of a vapor-deposited film on glass substrate were exposed to purified nitrogen for selected time increments at 700°F. This temperature was selected because it gave the best combination of exposure time and thickness change. Ellipsometer readings were taken immediately after exposure to determine polarizer and analyzer angles using monochromatic light at 5000A.2 After each set of readings was obtained, the specimens were exposed for an additional increment of time in nitrogen and a new set of readings taken. Film thickness was computed from LUCy's3 equation for nonabsorbing thin films. In Lucy's derivation, two equations for computing thickness were obtained. Peterson and Bashara4 have discussed the validity for using one of these equations when an independent value of the refractive index is used. The film was assumed to be Cr2N (Ref. 5) and was determined to be optically isotropic. Optical isotropy was determined by rotating the films about the surface normal and noting that the azimuth and phase difference did not change. Since Cr2N is reported to be hexagonal, it is assumed that optical isotropy results from randomly oriented grains of very small size. The thickness was computed using refractive indexes varying from 1.6 to 2.0. The maximum variation in computed thickness over this range for a given exposure was 20 pct. The data reported are based on a refractive index of 1.8. Reference readings on the metal surface were taken just prior to nitrogen exposure. No attempt was made to deoxidize or denitride the metal surface after vapor deposition, although specimens were observed to gain approximately 2A per day in air at room temperature. Twelve experimental exposures were made on a single sample over a total accumulative time of 132 min. Additional experiments over longer time intervals were made to determine the effect of heat up and cool down during and after exposure. As a result of these experiments, the thickness computed for each exposure was increased by 4A. Time profiles based on the linear law are similar to the oxidation profiles for many metals.' The rate of accumulation of the nitride film is rapid at first and slows down as the film thickness increases. The parabolic law x2 =k1t +k2 [11 gives a straight line in Fig. 1; therefore, it is concluded that the kinetic behavior is parabolic. Sey-bolt and Haman5 reported similar results for CrlN on chromium at 1000°C although the order of the thickness was much greater (10-3 cm). Analysis of thickness data based on other values of refractive index shows that the curves are shifted vertically but retain the same shape. According to Mott,7 it is expected that for thin films k2 is zero in Eq. [I]. Since the plot in Fig. 1 is linear through the origin, k2 is zero and the parabolic nature of the film growth is further indicated. The parabolic rate constant, calculated from the slope in Fig. 1, is 4.4 x 10-16 sq cm per sec. The corresponding work (+) required to bring an electron from the metal into the oxide is estimated to be 1.5 ev.7 The author thanks professor N. M. Bashara and D. W. Y.-That this paper deals with a real problem is illustrated by a statement made to the speaker a few months ago by the manager of a silver-lead property: "Our ore contains 60 per cent. silica on which the smelters are penalizing us heavily, and they are not able to take all our stuff even then. We have simply got to find some method other than smelting for getting the silver and lead out of our ores. We have had experts down here and have investigated flotation, leaching and volatilization, of which processes the latter is by far the most promising. We are continuing investigation." I was somewhat concerned in certain chloride volatilization experiments which we carried on in Denver in 1903, working on a carload of ore from Butte. Now being connected with the Cottrell process, by which method the fumes will undoubtedly he recovered if they solve the volatilization problem, I have looked into the matter again, and believe it can be developed into a commercial process. On a laboratory scale, working With silver-lead ores, experimenters have obtained a volatilization of over 90 per cent. of the total values in 30 to 60 min, on quantities of 1 to 5 lb., using a roasting dish and a muffle. That looks very good, and would be entirely commercial. On attempting to duplicate these results in a reverberatory furnace, they found that it is more likely to take 8 hr. firing to yield 75 per cent. extraction, which is not commercial at all, as it requires too much time, labor, and fuel, and the whole process is too slow. Of course it can be done, because we have done it in the laboratory.

Dropping from third position among the oil-producing states of the nation in 1942, Oklahoma ranked fourth in 1943 with a total output of 121,431,ooo bbl., a decline of 11.9 per cent from the previous year's total of 137,792,000 bbl. Production ranged from a maximum of 346,900 bbl. daily in February to a low of 322,800 bbl. daily in October, and at the close of the year was averaging 330,000 bbl. daily from 52,096 wells, or an average of 6.3 bbl. per well. The state's well, average at the close of 1942 amounted to 6.7 bbl. At the turn of the year, it appeared reasonable to assume that Oklahoma's producing rate would continue its downward trend during 1944 unless reversed by greater than normal discoveries. To Jan. I, 1944, Oklahoma has produced 5,188,466,-ooo bbl. of crude oil. Development and Exploration A total of 1287 wells was drilled in 1943, representing an increase of 77 wells, or 6.4 per cent over the preceding year's total of 1210. Of the wells completed, 587 (45.6 per cent) were oil wells with an average initial production of 319 bbl.; 127 (9.9 per cent) were gas wells with an average initial of 8,639,000 cu. ft.; and 573 (44.5 per cent) were dry. A total of 333 wildcats was drilled (25.9 per cent of all wells), an increase of 13 (4.1 per cent) over the 1942 total of 320. Of the*wildcats drilled, 46 (13.8 per cent) were oil wells with an average initial production of 235 bbl.; 27 (8.1 per cent) were gas wells with an average initial of 8,249,-ooo cu. ft.; and 260 (78.1 per cent) were recorded as failures. Reconditioning of wells throughout the state led to a total recompletion of 230 wells. Of these, 131 were oil wells with a combined initial production of 8360 bbl., 31 were gas wells with a total initial of 211,950,000 cu. ft., and 68 were abandoned. The 46 successful wildcats opened 33 new producing areas, one of which produced from three separate horizons, and led to the development of production in new horizons in 11 old pools. While none of the 1943 discoveries have as yet developed into what might be termed major pools, the West Moore pool, in Cleveland County, and the West Edmond pool, in Oklahoma County, are the two outstanding new areas opened to production. The West Moore pool, sec. 29, 10 N., 3 W., discovered in December 1943, was completed for an initial production of 248 bbl. of oil in 3 hr. through small tubing chokes in the second Wilcox sand from 8787 to 8800 ft. One well was drilling in this area at the close of the year. The West Edmond pool, an April discovery in sec. 32, 14 N 4 W., is producing from the Hunton lime at a depth of approximately 6950 ft., the world's deepest Hunton lime pool. To the end of the year, 15 oil wells had been completed, with no gas wells and no failures. Accumulated production to Jan. I, 1944, amounted to 474,300 bbl. of 41" gravity oil.
