An increasing number of water pollution control systems are certain to be installed by many industries in the future because of new federal, state and local government regulations, and because of the rising general concern about the deterioration of our water resources. Extensive engineering, some of it based on methods not yet developed, will be required if these new systems are to provide optimum pollution control. Among the primary design factors to be considered are capital cost, operating cost, and present and future regulatory requirements. Establishing A Survey and Test Program To produce a final plant effluent meeting regulatory agency requirements, engineers must have background data that are accurate and representative of present and future plant operation. Operating and plant engineering departments often have available much information, including plant water quantitative and qualitative requirements, both present and future, that can be helpful in the preparation of designs of pollution control systems.

Franklin Guiterman was born March 7, 1856, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father, William Guiterman, was at that time engagcd in the wholesale dry-goods business. Both of his parents were natives of Bavaria, but the inspiration of America was upon them, as they gave to their son a peculiarly American name, symbolizing thrift, individualism and scientific knowledge. Franklin Guiterman received his general education in the grammar schools and the Hughes High School of Cincinnati. He finished the latter course in the early 70's of the last century, when the great demand for mining and metallurgical experts in this country naturally led his parents to direct his further studies in that direction. Accordingly, he went to Europe, and studied at the Royal Saxon Mining Academy of Freiberg, where he completed the course in 1877, at the age of 21, and returned to the United States to engage in mining and metallurgical practice. Going to Colorado, he became assayer for the Terrible mine, at Georgetown, and in 1878, for the Little Chief mine at Leadville. The position of assayer, particularly at that period and in that region, was the door to much valuable knowledge of mines and ores. Besides learning the nature and value of the different classes of ore from the mines of his own company (if he was employed by a company) the assayer, had the first chance, through his outside customers, of seeing and testing the specimens brought by prospectors, and thus learning of important new discoveries. Moreover, if he possessed metallurgical knowledge, he might advance to the position of a metallurgical manager. Guiterman stayed in Leadville four years, and during that period was assayer or chemist for several different companies. Then for about a year he superintended copper-mining operations at Hartville, Wyo. In 1884, he had charge of sampling works at Silverton, colo.—an admirable opportunity for gaining wide knowledge of the varied ores of the San Juan country. In 1885, he was Superintendent of the Mingo plant of the Pennsylvania Lead Co., at Sandy, near Salt Lake City, Utah. The foregoing list of employments, each occupying not more than a year, certainly looks like the history of a rolling stone, gathering no moss. But the cause of these frequent changes was not inefficiency in each new position. In that time and period, a man who lost his place for such a reason was not likely to get another in the same neighborhood might away. And as for gathering "moss," the kind of "moss" that

A method is presented for predicting pressure drop for two-phase fluid flow in horizontal pipes. A set of 267 experimental measurements randomly sampled from approximately 1,000 measurements from various literature sources was used. Pressure gradients calculated by the procedure developed and compared with the experimental values showed a bias of +0.82 per cent and a standard deviation of 20.8 per cent. The advantatges of this method over other available methods of predicting two-phase flow pressure drop are (a) its comparative simplicity of application, (b) its relative independence of flow patterns, (c) its accuracy, which on the basis of a statistical evaluation predicts pressure drop closer than other available methods, and, (d) its ability to satisfactorily correlate laboratory data from various sources while the correlations from these sources do not appear to agree with one another. The method has been reduced to a simplified graphical procedure, suitable for field use. A two-phase f factor is defined and correlated with parameters involving the flowing gas-liquid mass ratio, a Reynolds number for the gas phase, and a Reynolds number for the liquid phase. The choice of parameters allows the correlation to reduce to the usual f factor plot for the limiting conditions of (111 gas or all liquid. INTRODUCTION The mechanics and characteristics of two-phase flow systems have been of interest throughout the industry for some time. In numerous engineering installations such as pipe lines, chemical reactors, and heat exchangers, two-phase flow conditions are of every day occurrence. In oil production operations it has been desirable, in some cases, to consider transporting gas and oil together in a common pipe from oil field to process plant. The trend toward centrally located stock tank batteries in oil fields has resulted in longer gathering pipelines in which more than one fluid phase is flowing. The increase in the producing capacity of oil wells due to new production tech- niques has created the need for review and re-design of many surface gathering lines for properly handling the increased production. Optimum pipe size for the situations described above has become an important factor. The problem which is of interest here involves the ability to predict the relationship between pressure drop, fluid properties, fluid rates, pipe diameter, and pipe length. Although the literature1,5,10,13,18,19 contains various articles dealing with specific cases of the problem, Lock-hart and Martinelli17 proposed the most general solution. Their method has been later modified by Baker:1 Alves2 demonstrated that different flow patterns are possible for a flow mechanism defined by Martinelli such as gas turbulent, liquid turbulent. Baker explained deviations experienced with Martinelli's correlations on the basis that different flow patterns could exist for the same flow mechanism. Using Martinelli's method of correlatioil, Baker correlated data for each flow pattern for the turbulent-turbulent flow mechanism. There has been no noteworthy increase in production during 1935; but, on the other hand, there have been ample manifestations of a considerable increase in interest and activity in connection with petroleum prospecting. The Lakes Entrance field, in the State of Victoria, on the coast some 120 miles east of Melbourne, remains the only actual producer; and this production, consisting of lubricating stock devoid of light fractions, is very small in amount. Arrangements have been completed under which a series of "scout bores" for structure testing in the region of Lakes Entrance will be sunk by the Government of the State of Victoria, assisted by a subsidy from the Federal Government. Prospecting In the State of New South Wales, brilliant geological research in very difficult country, carried out by geologists of Oil Search Ltd., has revealed several previously unsuspected domal structures in the Sydney-Newcastle coal basin. These have been mapped in detail, and a test well is being sunk at Kulnura, 10 miles west of Wyong and 40 miles north of Sydney. At the date of writing this well has reached a depth of 1250 ft., 10-in. casing having been set at 1248 feet. Superficial formations consist of the Hawkesbury sandstone and Narrabeen beds of the Hawkes-bury system (fresh-water Triassic). It is anticipated that the upper coal measures of the Kamilaroi (Permo-Carboniferous) will be entered almost immediately. The objectives of the drilling are the upper and lower marine beds of the Kamilaroi system, which are regarded as promising as potential source—and reservoir—beds for oil. At Mulgoa, 30 miles west of Sydney, a bore is being sunk by the same company, Oil Search Ltd., to test for natural gas on a well defined structure located by the company's geologists. Noteworthy flows of gas have been encountered, but nothing approaching a commercial supply has been struck. It is considered probable that the gas has been derived

LESS than eight months ago at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, attention was called to the demoralizing effect of the abnormal oil production of Mexico on the oil situation in the United States, and it was predicted that this unstabilizing influence would probably become impotent in 18 to 24 months through ' the exhaustion of the principal producing fields of Mexico, unless new fields were found in- the meantime. When this statement was made, the daily production of Mexico was about 600,000 bbl. of crude oil; now it is about 350,000 bbl. No new pools of consequence have been opened, although extensions have been made to two old pools. Over 200,000 bbl., or more than half of the present daily production, comes from Los Naranjos, Amatlan and North Zacamixtle fields, in which practically every well is so affected by salt water that the potential production dropped 50 per cent. in the month of September, clearly indicating that these fields are moving rapidly toward extinction. How much longer the one remaining important pool will last is a matter of conjecture.

This plant is situated in the borough of Pottstown, on the banks of the Schuylkill river, between the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the Schuylkill Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, on a plot of about 125 acres, most of which is reserved for future extensions. About 45 acres are to be used for houses, 40 of which have already been built. The accompanying plan will give a clear idea of the general arrangement of the works. Beginning at the lower or eastern end, the first building is the basic-cinder grinding-plant. At present, it consists of a 2000 mm. Jenisch ball-mill (Kugelfallmühle) similar to those used so extensively for grinding basic cinder in Europe. It was built by Herman LÖhnert, of Bromberg. The mill is very simple in design, and efficient in execution. About 13 horse-power is required to run it, and the average output is 20,000 pounds in 10 hours. The best work we have done is 29,000 pounds in 10 hours, with perfectly dry cinder. From 95 to 98 per cent. of the product will pass through a sieve with 100 meshes to the inch, while from 70 to 75 per cent. will pass through a 150-mesh sieve. The mill has been in service since last March, part of the time on double-turn, and the renewals and repairs have been very slight. The product of the plant is sold as a fertilizer. It runs from 18 to 24 per cent. in phosphoric acid, about 14 of which is reverted. The merits of this fertilizer were explained by Mr. W. H. Morris, at the Baltimore meeting of February, 1892 (Trans., xxi., 232), and by Mr. W. B. Phillips, at the Birmingham meeting of 1888 (Trans., xvii., 84). The results obtained by its use in Europe, where over 600,000 tons were used last year, are well known. Near the cinder-grinding plant will be situated the new machineshop, which is now being erected. The next buildings contain the brick-making plant and ovens.

ARSENIC is a very old substance. The ancients speak of it in their writings, and its use has developed very little until recent years. The ancients used it in making pigments, in medicine, and for poison. They also tell of the difficulties of handling it-an experience which is very similar to our own. Until about 10 years ago, arsenic was very cheap and was a drug on the market. About that time the boll weevil began making serious inroads on the American cotton crops, and after much investigation the Depart-ment of Agriculture developed a very successful poison for this pest, consisting of calcium arsenate. The weevil pest has continued, and as the cotton planters have become convinced that calcium arsenate is the best material to use against the weevil, the demands for it have been steadily increasing, resulting not only in a rising price of arsenic but in a very serious shortage so far as our country is concerned. So serious has this shortage become, and so vital is it to the cotton growing industry, that Congress has appointed a committee to investigate and report on the situation. A meeting of arsenic producers and consumers was held in New York last December to take stock of the situation and to see what could be done. The extreme increase in, the market price of arsenic-from 6 c. to 15 c. per lb. in less than a year-has been very harmful to the producers as well as to the consumers. A few weeks ago the Institute lost, by death, from its list of members one who in recent years, by frequent attendance at meetings, by the preparation of papers, and in many other ways, had shown a warm interest in Institute affairs; who had an extensive acquaintance among his fellow-members, and whose memory it is fitting to perpetuate by a permanent record in the volumes of our Transactions. Dr. Byron William Cheever, acting Professor of Metallurgy in the University of Michigan, died at his home in Ann Arbor, on the 6th of March, 1888. He was born September 17th, 1841, in Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York. In 1844, the family moved to Geneva, Illinois, and thence, in 1857, to Dundee, Michigan. Two years later, a third removal was made to Ann Arbor to take advantage of the educational facilities there offered; and in 1859 the subject of this sketch, with his two brothers, entered the University of Michigan. In 1863, he took the degree of Bachelor of Arts. After a year or two of business life, he entered the medical department of the University, and graduated as Doctor of Medicine in 1867. A taste for scientific work had been developed in him in early life; and, even while carrying on undergraduate and medical studies, his proficiency in chemistry found recognition in his occasional employment as assistant in the University laboratory. The interval between the close of his course in Arts and the commencement of his course in Medicine was also devoted to chemical work, partly in the city of Philadelphia, and partly in the West Indies, where he was employed in the service of a commercial company engaged in the guano trade. Dr. Cheever never took up regular practice as a physician. After receiving his medical diploma he went again to Philadelphia, and for about two years was employed as an analytical and consulting chemist in that city. The paper describes the application of the logarithmic wedge sector method of quantitative spectrography to the estimation of commonly occurring minor impurities in crude and refined tin. Both arc and spark methods of emission were employed and with the former a new device was used to overcome difficulties arising from the low melting point of the metal. The impurities investigated included antimony, arsenic, bismuth, copper, iron, lead, and zinc, their concentrations lying, in general, between 0.01 and 0.50 per cent. The results obtained show that the method may be usefully employed for the estimation of bismuth, copper, iron, lead, and zinc, in amounts ranging from 0.50 per cent to well below 0.01 per cent. Arsenic and antimony, however, could not be estimated in amounts less than 0.03 and 0.07 per cent respectively. Out of a total of 116 estimations by arc and spark emission, in 96 the errors were less than 5 per cent of the total quantity of the element present, whereas in the remaining twenty, the errors lay between 5 and 25 per cent. Spectro-analytical data for the several impurities studied are given in the form of tables, and curves correlating line-intensity with concentration have also been included. DISCUSSION (R. G. Smith, London, England (written discussion).—I am interested in Dr Hitchen's account of his investigations on the application of spectrographic methods to the assay of tin and congratulate him on his valuable contribution to the literature on the subject of quantitative spectrum analysis. Some of the results obtained in the course of investigations carried out for the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Assn., although obtained under somewhat different experimental conditions, may be of interest in connection with this paper. IT is intended to discuss in this paper the protection appliances used for high-temperature pyrometer installations involving the use of platinum couples and describe some of the characteristics of a new carborundum protection tube. Of all the components that go to make a complete pyrometer installation, the one given the least attention and the one about which there is the least exact information is the outer protection tube. This condition is unfortunate as much, and in some cases even the success of the equipment as a whole, depends on the proper type of protection. In the majority of cases, the installation is allowed to operate without attention until some part of the apparatus breaks clown. The outer tube is the component that usually fails and, more often than not, the failure causes breakage of the porcelain protection and ruin of the couple. This condition should be recognized and studied as it has a very important bearing upon the upkeep cost of pyrometer equipment. The cost of the outer protection tube is small compared with the cost of the platinum couple and procelain protection and it would well repay users of this type of equipment to replace their outer protection tubes at certain definite periods, which experience shows is necessary to prevent destruction of the platinum. Speaking generally, platinum thermocouple equipment is used for measuring temperatures over 2000° F. (1094° C.), and is used extensively for the control of brick and pipe kilns, glass pot furnaces, glass tank furnaces, heat-treating furnaces, open-hearth furnaces, and forge furnaces. A satisfactory protection tube must be sufficiently refractory not to soften at the maximum temperature within the furnace. It must be resistant to cracking clue to temperature changes, should be as nearly gas-tight as possible, and should be made of a material with a high thermal conductivity and great resistance toward erosion by the furnace atmosphere.

MANY of our largest copper deposits contain both sulfide and oxidized copper minerals. The large porphyry mines, with a total copper content of from 1.3 to 2.0 per cent., send to their mills ore with an oxide content of from 0.2 to 0.4 per cent. While the recoveries of the sulfide minerals are considered satisfactory, using modern flotation practice, the recovery of the oxi- dized portion of the copper is small; better recoveries of oxidized copper were made before flotation methods were adopted. Beside the ores containing copper mainly as sulfide, with a small amount of oxidized copper,, many of the large porphyry mines have oxide orebodies, in which the propor-tion of non-sulfide minerals is so high that 2 present methods of treatment are ineffi-cient. In some of the well-known ore-bodies in the Miami-Inspiration district the copper occurs about equally in sulfide and oxidized forms; and the mixing of minerals is complete throughout the ore-body. There is no possibility of mining the sulfides and the oxides selectively. At the New Cornelia mine, however, the oxide, and sulfide ores are sharply separated, per-haps by an ancient water level, so that the oxide ore may be mined and treated in a plant built for that purpose, and the under-lying sulfide ore may be left for treatment in another plant. If copper is to be made from an ore having a total content of 1.5 per cent., it must be concentrated or removed from the ore by some. hydrometallurgical method. Flotation is generally successful for the sulfide minerals and flotation after filming with sulfide seems to work in many cases on the pure carbonate minerals. The past 15 years have seen rapid advances in the metallurgy of materials for drill machinery and bits, but rock drilling itself continues to be largely an art. Jet piercing, roller bit rotary drilling, and rotary percussion are all promising new techniques, but the percussion rock drill, still used for 90 pct of the blastholes in U. S. hard-rock mining, has undergone no major modification since pneumatic machines were first used successfully in the 1860's. This singular lack of progress stems directly from ignorance of the nature of impact failure of rock and the fundamentals of rock penetration in general. For nearly three-quarters of a century, mining engineers did not know what went on at the bottom of a drillhole. More and more, in recent years, investigators in the field have come to realize that to understand percussion drilling they must study the basic action of percussion bits penetrating rock—not the per- formances of commercial rock drills, with their many attendant variables that cannot be isolated or controlled. Using a vertical drop tester, the writer investigated the sequence of rock failure under the impact. of a simple, chisel-shaped bit when changes were made, singly, in significant variables. Results of this and other research are reported here. BASIC CONCEPTS The formation of a crater in rock under the impact blow of a bit can be observed experimentally. Directly beneath the edge of the bit the rock is crushed into fine powder; toward the sides of the crater it chips out into relatively large fragments. An explanation of these phenomena has been offered by Drilling Research Inc. on the basis of work sponsored by this organization at Battelle Memorial Institute (Ref. 1,1954, Summary, pp. 9-18). The study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by study-ing the travel .times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs :it varying distances, major discont'inuities in the earth's crust, could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seismology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boundaries of our information on local conditions Below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called " seismograph " exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in locating salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we arc dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something quite different', in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to the other is likewise relativtly abrupt. For example, in the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, delineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results. W. 0. HOTCHKISS,* Madison, Wis.-When we began to do geological field work in the Lake Superior region, we found a correlation in existence, and, as youngsters, accepted all that as settled. Both Mr. Allen and I, since that time, have seen a great many things that were not apparent nor visible to Van Hise, and those who worked with him; we realize now that the correlation was not final and that much remains to be determined concerning geology of the Lake Superior region. My attitude on this matter is that we should not publish an amended correlation as a final thing. We should avoid, in every way possible, foreclosing the minds of those who follow us in working in the geology of this region. As a matter of fact, no correlation can be final at present, because facts and data are accumulating so rapidly that every classification must be immediately modified to fit further observation. Consequently, my attitude in this matter would be, instead of saying that the iron formations of the Lake Superior region are all Middle Huronian, to say that there may be three Huronians-or four or five- we do not know. I believe it is better policy to hold to our present correlation. I do not believe there is any economic benefit to the mining man or the geologist working on problems relating to explorations for iron ore, that cannot be just as well solved by maintaining our present correlation, with a. wholesome idea of our lack of knowledge and the necessity for further detailed work. Then, if any new horizons are discovered in any particular range, the minds of the investigators will not be foreclosed because some one has said that all the iron formation is in the Middle so that there is no use looking elsewhere for it. There is use looking elsewhere, in many cases, as the ore deposits become exhausted.

IN the September 1936 issue of MINING AND METALLURGY the pioneer work of boring a 5-ft. shaft to a depth of 1125 ft. at the Idaho Maryland mine in California was described. Later, a Bureau of Mines Information Circular (No. 6923) gave additional data. In re¬cent months still further progress has been made in this technique through the sinking of a 5 1/2-ft. shaft for Pickands, Mather & Co. at their Zenith mine, Ely, Minn. The present work was done with new carefully designed equipment and several experienced men so that progress, as shown below has been much better:

In discussing the waste upon which hinges, or is supposed to hinge, so largely the preservation of our national resources, the conclusions reached would be more reliable if actual experience were consulted, and fewer deductions were drawn from general statements, which are often the product of the imagination. It cannot be questioned that the value of by-products has .not been sufficiently appreciated by us, and that our tardiness in recovering the useful ingredients of the escaping gas of our coke-ovens is one of the most glaring instances of shortcoming in that direction. And yet even for that sin there is some palliation in the immature condition of affiliated industries. I presume that it is admitted, without argument, that, except under very exceptional conditions, all the elements cannot be recovered from most of the ores or natural products which we treat. While it is a shame that the by-products from our coke-ovens should be dissipated, Edward W. Parker's report to the U. S. Geological Survey for 19061 supplies a fairly good excuse in justification of this appalling waste. He says (pp. 773 to 774.): " What has been already commented on in previous reports about the slowness of manufacturers to change from the better known but wasteful beehive practice to the by-product recovery method of coke manufacture is particularly emphasized in the statistics presented in this chapter. For it would appear from the table following that the construction of by-product ovens had about come to a standstill, especially when the records for the preceding five years are taken into consideration. At the close of 1901, when there were only 1,165 by-product ovens completed in the United States, there were 1,533 in course of construction, 498 of which were completed during the following year. At the close of 1902, 1,346 retort ovens were building, 293 of which were added to the completed plants in 1903. At the close of 1903, 1,335 new ovens were building and 954 of these
