A great number of hypotheses has been advanced to explain the complex phenomena that are encountered in flotation. In the days of bulk-oil flotation, when a large quantity of oil was employed, it was observed that the oil-mineral aggregate floated above the ore-pulp because of its lesser density. With the advent of froth-flotation this phase of the theory had to be modified to take into account the presence of air bubbles. The reason why the mineral-bearing froth of today rises to the top of flotation cells is, of course, because the air-mineral aggregate, with whatever reagent may be associated with it, is lighter than the pulp. In an attempt to explain froth-flotation the fact has been emphasized that certain minerals are wetted and therefore remain in water; while others are not wetted and therefore become associated in preference with air. Such an "explanation" does not explain facts, it merely states them; for instance, it does not explain why minerals are wetted under some circumstances and not wetted under others. Going somewhat further, the wetting or nonwetting of minerals by water has been ascribed' to differences in the angles of contact between oil droplets and mineral surface at the surface of the minerals. This explanation, however, was abandoned when soluble flotation reagents came to replace the so-called "insoluble" reagents. Another theory, sponsored about 10 years ago by Ralston,² involves the effects of electric charges at the surface of the mineral particles and air bubbles. This theory, unfortunately, was not developed as fully as it seems desirable. The belief that adsorption phenomena might play a preponderant role in flotation3 has been rather widespread for the last 10 years. Unfor-

This study was carried out with copper because it represents the simplest form of sintering, in that but one metal is involved and all reactions occur in the solid state. The present work will cover three variables affecting the sintering process; namely, briquetting pressure, sintering temperature and time in hot zone. Although strength and dimensional changes were observed, this is primarily a metal-lographic study of the sintering process in copper. The term "sintering" should be understood to mean the process by which the metal powder particles of the compact become united into one body. Material Used The copper powder used was made from reduced copper oxide, and is typical of a grade used for the mass production of parts formed of metal powders. The report of the Nominating Committee was presented and is given in this same Bulletin. A petition was received for new requirements for membership in the Institute and was ordered to take the statutory course. A petition was received for the establishment of a Tulsa Section of the Institute and was referred to a committee to report on the territory. Thirty-six Members, two Associates, and two Junior Members were elected. The status of two Junior Members was changed to Member.

THE results to come from the application of cheap oxygen to industry in general will be so great that it is not possible to enumerate them beforehand and still less to estimate them. We naturally think first of the fuel to be saved; yet this is only a minor item. The main results will be changes in methods of manufacture or of operation. The speed of operation will be greatly increased, with consequent savings in labor and fixed charges, and also, in most cases, in the cost of fuel. High temperature will be brought within the reach of every manufacturer, whereas it is now available only to those operating expensive electric furnaces located within reach of large water power. New speeds and new temperatures mean improvements and processes not thought of at present. Incidentally the changes in methods will probably change the location of important world industries, the tendency being to concentrate at the fuel centers. The whole subject is so new that most of the data which an engineer requires for definite estimates do not exist. All that is possible now is to obtain a general view of the subject with rough and fragmentary estimates for some of the industries with which we are specially concerned. Most of the figures presented deal with fuel saving merely because there are available no data from which to estimate the effect on speed of operation. When working out the practical problems involved in substituting oxygen for air, in most cases the change will be made step by step; by trying out air enriched with increasing percentages of oxygen. Such partial applications of oxygen will be temporary expedients during the transition and there will be no stopping place short of the complete substitution of air by oxygen. This final stage is therefore the one discussed in this paper.1

SOMEWHAT over ten years ago the author described studies1,2 on the constitution of the copper-silicon system. The copper-rich portion of this diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The experimental points freely dotted about the diagram seemed to justify an otherwise unconvincing diagram and for several years the curious reverse bend in the alpha-phase bound-ary was accepted as substantially correct, even by later investigators3,4 of the system who introduced changes in the high-silicon phases. The binary diagram has been used as a base for several ternary systems" without any suggested changes. Voce10 suspected the existence of another phase from his study of the cast alloys in the copper-manganese¬silicon system, but evidently hesitated to extrapolate this to the binary diagram, particularly in view of the too ingenious explanation that was advanced" to account for the pools of constituent clearly visible in castings; namely, that they were secondary alpha of twinned orientation deposited from beta. Von Schwarz,12 in 1932, called attention to the fact that this micro-constituent in copper-silicon alloy castings was anisotropic under polar-ized light and asserted that a new phase, not cubic, should be placed in the diagram adjacent to alpha. Sautner,13 on the basis of investigations with the polarizing microscope and with X-rays, introduced this phase into the diagram at about 6 per cent Si. The relevant part of his dia-gram is shown in Fig. 2. Sautner called the new phase beta, renaming the old beta phase zeta. To avoid confusion, in redrawing Fig. 2 the phases have been renamed in accordance with the terminology adopted in the present paper, in which the new phase is called kappa and the other phases retain the designation given them by Arrhenius and Westgren.4

The cost of finding and developing new reserves is continually rising. We must meet these rising costs with more economical operations. This can he accomplished if we revise our ideas of proper well spacing and well allowable to consider the concept of optimum well spacing. According to this concept, the optimum spacing is the one which leads to the maximum present worth for a reservoir when ail factors affecting total cost and total revenue are considered and when the wells are produced in the most eficient manner. Application of this principle efficiently utilizes available well potential and properly considers the recovery eficiency in addition to fixing the spacing on the basis of the amount and value of the oil to he recovered. This Study presents an analysis of one producing zone containing low gravity crude to illustrate the effect of these factors on the present worth and on the optimum economic spacing under two production drives—-evolved gas and water drive. The maximum present worth occurs when the optimum number of wells for open-flow operation is employed. Frequently, this optimum development cal1s for very wide spacing and the ideal field rates are not unreasonable. Under other circumstance. where proration is necessary, an optimum combination of well spacing and well allowable exists which permits production at relatively high rates. The optimum well density in a field depends on the recovery efficiency and the valule of the oil. In solution gas-driven reservoirs this optimum spacing for operation at high producing rates can vary from extremely wide spacing to handle viscous low gravity oil in thin formations to relatively close spacing in thick sands where good recoveries are expected. Because of the better recovery from water-driven fields, the optimum spacing in these fields is closer than in solution gas-driven fields. Also, the water encroachment pattern is dependent upon the well spacing, and an adequate numher of wells is needed to assure a good sweep eficiency. The economic optimum well density in a water-driven field is high enough for this purpose. INTRODUCTION From year to year domestic oil becomes more difficult to find. The fields we do locate are frequently smaller and deeper than older fields and the costs for men, material and equipment are continually rising. To replenish our reserves we must continue to search for and develop new fields, but experience has shown we cannot expect prices to rise in proportion to costs. Consequently, we must meet increasing costs by more economical operations. A vigorous effort is being made within the industry to improve exploration methods, to cope with the problems of deeper drilling, and to obtain a secondary yield from older fields. Many significant contributions have resulted from these efforts. The economic operation of new fields can be further improved by developing these fields on optimum spacing and producing the wells at higher rates. This would avoid the drilling of unnecessary wells and provide additional capital for seeking new oil. While the benefits of these practices are obvious, the problem of defining the optimum development of a field for natural depletion can become very complex. A study of the effect of well spacing and several reservoir variables on economic worth of a specific field is reported here to illustrate the problem and to show the magnitude of the benefits to be realized. This study is necessarily limited to the field conditions selected and is not intended as a general solution of the well spacing problem. It does, however, indicate factors to be considered, the trends to be expected, and the direction in which we should proceed in developing new fields. NO consideration is given to land and legal considerations which might arise. METHOD OF ANALYSIS The optimum method of developing and producing a field is to use the combination of spacing and prora-tion which gives the maximum return. In addition, we do not want to lose recovery. These considerations of maximum return and maximum recovery present no serious conflict. The value of each method of operation is conveniently expressed in terms of its present worth. According to the present worth method of evaluation,' an acceptable annual percentage return is assigned to the operation, and all incomes, capital costs, and expenses are discounted at this rate to the start of the operation. This net value is the present worth. If we apply the same discount rate to several alternate methods of operation, the one yielding the greatest present worth is the best method. If we express net income in terms of price per barrel of oil produced, drilling and equipment costs on a well basis, and expenses as cost per well year, this evalu-

THE copper-bearing sulphide ores from the mines in Butte, Mont., which are for the most part concentrated at the Boston & Montana duction Works in Great Falls and at the Washoe Reduction Works in Anaconda, contain the following minerals of economic value: Chalcocite, Cu2S; enargite, Cu3AsS4; cupriferous pyrite; bornite, Cu3FeS3; covellite, CUS; tetrahedrite, 4 CuS2Sb2S3; and tennantite, Cu8AsS7;. All of the ores carry a high percentage of pyrite. Many of the above sulphides are argentiferous and also carry from 10 to 20 cts. per ton in gold. The gangue is quartz and highly altered granite, with sphalerite and galena and more rarely barite and hubnerite as accessory minerals. An average chemical analysis of the second-class ore concentrated at Great Falls and Anaconda would be as follows: Copper 3.2 to 3.4 per cent. Silver 2. 3 to 3.0 oz. per ton. Gold 0.0-1 to 0.15 oz. per ton. Si02.. 55 to 60 per cent. FeO 12 to 15 per cent.. Sulphur 12 to 1.5 per cent. Al2O3, S to 10 per cent. CaO 0.5 to 0.8 percent. As203, 0.5 to 0.6 percent. Lead 0.2 to 0.3 percent. Before describing the Great Falls flow sleet as installed, at Anaconda, a brief history of the Great Falls concentrator will be given, including a description of the various concentrating machines and systems which have been tested in the search for a flow sheet which would give a higher recovery of copper.

High capacity off-highway haulage trucks equipped with electric wheel drives have been available for commercial applications since 1963 and, although still interesting to study, cannot be considered as a "new" type of equipment any longer. However, the electric wheel drive components which played a key role in the development of these trucks has indirectly led to another new trucking development-the gas turbine engine for off -highway vehicles. Although most of the production models of the electric-wheel haulage trucks are equipped with 700 hp engines (the largest production engine commonly available), the electric drive components of the motorized wheel were designed to transmit more than 700 hp. To utilize this added potential, 1000-hp class diesel engines are in the process of being developed, but progress has been much slower than expected. The delay has caused some engineering thoughts to concentrate on the adaptation of the 1000-hp gas turbine engines, originally designed for aircraft applications, for use in haulage trucks. The question in most minds centered around the ability of such an engine to withstand the tough usage expected of it in an open pit.

In conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Miiller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties. Location.—Along the rocky eastern shores of Great Bear Lake, in the Northwest Territories of Canada, lies one of the world's great radium-producing areas. The Eldorado mine, owned and operated by the Eldorado Gold Mines, Ltd., is at LaBine Point; while the Contact Lake mine, operated by Bear Exploration and Radium, Ltd. (B.E.A.R.), lies 9 miles to the southeast of LaBine Point and 2 miles south of Echo Bay, an indentation in the eastern shore line of Great Bear Lake. Geology.—The Eldorado company obtains its radium by the mining of the mineral pitchblende, which is found associated with a complex variety of metallic and nonmetallic minerals1 in quartz-carbonate veins occurring in metamorphosed pre-Cambrian sediment aries. Most of the pitchblende is intimately associated with a brown quartz and belongs to an early hydrothermal stage of mineralization during which safflorite-rammelsbergite and minor cobalt-nickel minerals were also deposited. Some pitchblende occurs with a group of minerals belonging to a later stage of mineralization in which the gangue is mainly dolomite and sometimes ferruginous rhodochrosite. In recent years considerable publicity has been given to the problem of atmospheric pollution by fuel-burning equipment. Legislation has been stimulated and smoke ordinances have been enacted, the provisions of which show a definite trend toward stricter control of the emissions not only from the stacks of industrial fuel users but also from the chimneys of domestic consumers. As a result of war conditions, some slackening in the enforcement of these ordinances may be noted, but this is only a temporary expediency caused by the changes necessary in the distribution of the nation's fuel supplies and difficulties in securing the necessary equipment. Previous trends may be expected to continue in the postwar period. Largely because of the consumer demand for automatic heat, but partly because of the legislation against smoke emission, there has been a marked increase in the use of domestic underfeed stokers with the past decade. When correctly adjusted and operated, these units reduce the smoke emission materially, so that even the high-volatile bituminous coals may be burned with little or no emission of objectionable smoke. Unfortunately, however, the use of the domestic underfeed stoker introduces another problem; namely, fly-ash. Production of Fly-ash The term "fly-ash" is a misnomer, since the fly material is generally a mixture of small carbonaceous particles varying from green coal to coke, and inorganic particles ranging from fluffy ash to small particles of fused clinker. For want of a more comprehensive name, however, the term fly-ash is used throughout this paper to include all the fly material. Even with hand-fired furnaces a certain amount of fly-ash is produced, which necessitates periodic cleaning of the boiler flues or furnace radiator, the smoke pipe, and occasionally the chimney itself. With stoker operations the amount of fly-ash is increased many fold, because of the higher velocity of air travel through the fuel bed. Frequently the amount of this fly-ash attains such proportions as to constitute a definite nuisance to the householder and his neighbors and distracts very materially from the otherwise automatic or semi-automatic performance of the stoker. Gentlemen.-The Institute was founded 54 years ago "with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained," At least once a year it is well to take stock of our assets, review our performance and determine how well we are now carrying out the purposes of our Founders. There can be no question as to the work the Institute has done and is doing in promoting the arts and sciences in the fields of mining and metallurgy. One needs only to contrast the methods, the labor and the costs of a half century ago with those now to visualize how far we have gone in the development of accurate technology and sound economics in mineral and metal production. The great mines, mills and smelters of the present, handling individually thousands of tons per day, would' have been impossible except for the accumulation of knowledge, the development of theory, and the improvement in practice that has characterized the period since the foundation of the Institute. The United States has prospered in the last half century greatly, and this has been due not merely to the possession of great natural resources, but to these resources being reduced to possession and put to work. The absence of customs barriers and the freedom of trade across the whole width of this great continent has been an important factor in the growth of our wealth. Unrestricted interchange of goods has permitted each citizen to draw on the resources of the whole country. However, these are but subsidiary causes of prosperity. The free interchange of scientific and technical data, by making the whole body of facts and theory available to each worker, has made this quick and unrivaled development possible. In promoting this free trade in knowledge the Institute may claim a large place without fear of denial. The .72 volumes of TRANSACTIONS, the special volumes, the bulletins and the other publications that have been issued, include a store of knowledge of the arts and sciences related to the production and use of metals and minerals not duplicated elsewhere. The Larap iron deposits, 125 miles east of Manila, are the biggest high-grade iron deposits in the Philippines, and have in seven years produced nearly 4 million tons of 60 per cent ore. Magnetic surveying followed by churn and diamond drilling cheaply developed a score of million tons. The ore zone is a wedge of metamorphic rocks in fresh, Miocene sediments overlain by agglomerates, which seem to have filled a river valley eroded in the sediments. A mild overthrust of the competent agglomerates crumbled the shale in front. Solutions gradually turned it into more competent hornfels and deposited pyrite, then magnetite and pyrite in the pores. As the temperature rose large bodies of magnetite with some pyrite were deposited by replacement and in open cavities in tensional areas of overthrust shears. At still higher temperature magnetite and calcium-magnesium silicates formed other bodies in similar cavities, and finally the thrust zone was invaded by syenite porphyry, causing high-temperature alteration products. Possibly, as temperature abated, more high-grade ore was deposited. The complicated faulting indicates dynamic, chronological and spatial changes of mineralization rather than zoning in a static system. Noncommercial copper, molybdenum and some gold accompanied the iron mineralization. In the thirties the Philippines gained a justified reputation as a country of considerable mineral wealth. Traces of Chinese workings show that these earliest travelers and traders had in a small way exploited the latent gold resources in the Islands. The Spaniards continued this for centuries, but did not succeed in establishing any steady mining industry. Modern technology was required to get it started. The rapid development in the last decade before the war got its impetus from several financial factors, the return to sugar growers of previously collected taxes, the influx of Spanish capital during the civil war in Spain, the influx of Chinese capital when the Japanese started their "China incident," and others. Directly or indirectly much of this capital reached the mining industry; in particular, gold mining. Out of the turmoil of an exceptional mining boom emerged a sufficient number of good and well managed gold properties to send the production to a level above that of any single state in the United States at the time. The Spaniards continued this for centuries, but did not succeed in establishing any steady mining industry. Modern technology was required to get it started. The rapid development in the last decade before the war got its impetus from several financial factors, the return to sugar growers of previously collected taxes, the influx of Spanish capital during the civil war in Spain, the influx of Chinese capital when the Japanese started their "China incident," and others. Directly or indirectly much of this capital reached the mining industry; in particular, gold mining. Out of the turmoil of an exceptional mining boom emerged a sufficient number of good and well managed gold properties to send the production to a level above that of any single state in the United States at the time. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the unit operation of grinding and the circulating load, of the unit operation of classification and the circulating load, and of the two superimposed into one operation to clarify the overall trend of events relating the circulating load to the capacity of the closed circuit grinding system, to the specific surface area of the final fine product, and to the energy consumption in the closed circuit grinding process. The capacity of the closed circuit is frequently, if not always, determined by the classifier, not by the mill." With these words a startling idea was expressed in 1934 by Dorr and Anable.1 Today, some 30 years later, grinding in closed circuit is universally accepted. The basic curve presenting the capacity factor versus circulating load by Dorr and Anable has obviously been so convincing that not a single authoritative investigation regarding its validity seems to have been conducted. The only major subject of discussion appears to have been the relative merits of the 'high' and 'low' circulating loads. It seems to be universally agreed that much still remains to be hoped for regarding sharpness of classification. BASIC CURVES FOR CONSTANT MILL LOADING Fig. 1 presents a series of basic curves for constant mill loadings in function of new feed rate and circulating load. The mill loading indicated by each curve is the sum of hourly tonnages of new feed and circulating load. For example, at point 0 where the new feed rate is 100 t/h and the circulating load 300%, or 300 t/h, the mill loading is 400 t/h. In closed circuit grinding, the new feed rate corresponds to the rate of finished classified material produced. Although at this stage the effect of classification is excluded in construction of the basic curves, the trend indicated by these curves is strongly in favor of closed circuit operation under relatively small circulating loads. A study of the curves reveals that, e.g., a mill operating under a load of 200 t/h at point P where the new feed rate is 50 t/h and the circulating load 300% will also operate under the same total load at point Q where the new feed rate is 100 t/h and the circulating load 100%. In other words, a reduction of circulating load from 300% to 100% would lead to doubling of the new feed rate and doubling of the rate of production of finished material, without a change in the total mill loading. The obvious question is, is it also possible by a reduction of the circulating load in a closed industrial grinding circuit to increase the production of finished classified material and, if so, how and to what extent? GRINDING TESTS BY DORR AND ANABLE In a series of open circuit grinding tests reported by Dorr and Anable1 limestone was ground at various feed rates in a 3-ft ball mill. The original data are reproduced in Table I. It can be seen that with the increased feed rate production of -65-mesh material increased and the energy consumption per unit weight of the -65-mesh product decreased in the reverse ratio.
