ALTHOUGH the crystallography of lattice transformations has been studied extensively during the past few years, these studies have been limited, with few exceptions1,2, to specimens in which the transformed lattice appears as a, segregate phase. A realization of the technical importance of the segregation mechanism, especially in the formation of martensitic structures and in age-hardening phenomena, has undoubtedly stimulated research in this direction. In the crystallographic studies of segregation, the general problem has been to relate the orientation of the parent crystal to that of the segregate crystals. The technique has been complicated by the fact that it has been necessary to deal with the presence of as many as 24 ideal segregate orientations within one parent lattice; furthermore, the segregate lattices are invariably scattered (seldom less than ±2°, often as much as 15° or 20°) about these ideal positions. It is probable that a more complete picture of phase transformations may result from a study in which complete lattice relationships between individual grains are evaluated, thereby providing an additional param-eter which, when it is necessary to work with multiple segregate-orienta-tions, cannot be evaluated. The present paper presents the results of such a study, ? wherein a peritectic reaction is made use of to produce the transformed lattices.

SEVERAL constructive and fundamental studies have been made in the analysis of data obtained from experiments carried on with batch ball and rod mills. The operating characteristics of ball milling in small continuous circuits have also been appraised. It is from these analyses that some of the theories of comminution have been developed. Relatively few studies of continuous rod milling have added significantly to the fundamental concepts, because seldom have they yielded sufficiently consistent results. Perhaps they have been too limited in their scope. Careful control of the variables in batch grinding is simple compared with that encountered in a continuous operation. This factor alone has discouraged many investigators. Occasionally results of systematic changes made in industrial rod mill circuits have been published, but usually the data are sketchy and are restricted because -of the unwieldiness of the equipment used. The work, in general, has not been comprehensive; nevertheless it has provided empirical relationships that have bridged the gap between postulate and practice so that by proper manipulation of formulae, a mill designer can anticipate mill size and power requirements.1-3 Although operating variables of a small continuous mill are not so easy to control as with the batch mill, with present day devices, and with careful experimental work, consistent results can be obtained.

THE copper-mining district of Jerome, Ariz., is of such economic importance that the following brief notes may be of interest. The ore deposits are said by Ransome1 to be pre-Cambrian, and are contained in the pre-Cambrian schists of the region. In the vicinity of the mine (the United Verde) the schist stands nearly vertical .and strikes a little west of north. At least three varieties are distinguishable-(1) a green rock, schistose, on its margins but grading into massive material, which is evidently an altered dioritic intrusive; (2) a rough gray schist with abundant pheno-crysts of quartz, apparently an altered rhyolite; and (3) a satiny, greenish gray, very fissile sericitic schist that may be a metamorphosed sediment. The ore occurs in varieties (2) and (3), the main belt of dioritic rock (1) lying just west of the orebodies. The ore is said to follow as a rule the layers of fine sericitic schist. T. A. Rickard2 says that the ore at the United. Verde Extension mine is found at the contact of diorite and schist, that both diorite and ore are earlier than the regional metamorphism, and that the quartz porphyry (" rhyolite" of Ransome) is of post-Cambrian age.

The activities of nickel in liquid iron-nickel solutions containing from 10 to 90 at. pct Ni were measured over the temperature range .1510° to 1600°C. A special function was devised whereby activities can be computed by a graphical integration using the results of chemical analyses on the vapor phase alone. The liquid solutions studied exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law, but they approach ideality as the temperature is raised from 1510° to 1600°C. The maximum heat of solution is less than -8.0 kcal per mole. The entropy of solution is less than —2.5 kcal per mole deg at 1510°C, and changes negligibly as the temperature is raised. The liquid iron-nickel solutions do not follow regular solution behavior. THE activities of the components of a liquid alloy system can be determined in favorable cases from the partial pressure of the vapor in equilibrium with the liquid alloy.' Wildcat drilling operations in Utah in 1937 added nothing of importance to the commercial oil and gas possibilities of the state, and such operations consisted largely of efforts to reach objectives in wells started in former years. The Standard Oil Company of California, jointly with the Continental Oil Co., completed a wildcat well in sec. 22, 23 S., 11 E., on the San Rafael swell in Emery County, which was abandoned in metamorphic rocks at 4900 ft.; it tested the Pennsylvanian and Mississippian sections and probably ended in Devonian or older rocks. The Utah Southern Oil Company's test of the Cisco structure in sec. 33, 22 S., 22 E., was abandoned at 6715 ft.; it may have been through the Pennsylvanian section at this depth. The Mountain Fuel Supply Co. continued the development of its Clay Basin gas field, and with the completion of two wells in 1937 added 35,571,000 cu. ft. initial daily gas capacity to its reserves. This company constructed 21 miles of 10-in. gas pipe line from the Clay Basin field to its South Baxter Basin terminal in Wyoming, and during the closing months of 1937 delivered 2,225,000,000 cu. ft. of gas through the Salt Lake trunk line.

We wish to congratulate the authors on a fine presentation of a difficult and interesting problem. We fully support the findings that liquid or even mushy center reduction has no place in the production of quality steels. We also agree with the findings, or implications, that internal bar quality is not made in the rolling stands, but in the caster. This is the main reason why Inland caster exclusively uses the submerged casting technique after a few months of familiarization with open casting. The metallurgical advantages of combining in-line reduction with a caster are actually indirect. The use of submerged casting and refining powder permits casting of fine grained aluminum killed steels without resorting to expensive grain refiners and cuts down or eliminates reoxidation during casting. Immersion of a snorkel into a small mold may lead to several operating difficulties. Hence, the presence of in-line reduction enables the section to be cast into a large mold, at high output rates, while obtaining some product size flexibility. The capital and operating costs of a caster-- in-line mill are lower than those of the traditional installation with a separate reheating furnace and billet mill. Admittedly, in-line reduction represents an additional challenge to the steelmaker, maintenance man, and metallurgist.

Assaying, mineralogy, and geology appear in ancient records as early as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Agricola was the first author to unify the earth sciences, the mineral extractive industries and the mineral processing industries. His text, De Re Metallica, published in Latin in 1556, is recognized as the first technical literature. In 1702 mining instruction was started at Freiberg, Germany. The purpose of this school was to train skilled workers, a program corresponding to present-day, on-job, vocational-technical, upgrading extension training. Formal instruction in mining engineering began at Schemnitz, Hungary, in 1763, at Freiberg, Germany, in 1766, and at St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1773. It is interesting to note that these three schools initiated instruction in mining engineering before formal instruction in civil engineering began at Paris, France, in 1775. Early mining engineering, 1763-1900, was expected to cover all eventualities in the mineral industries. Optional curricula were offered early in the 20th Century but did not reach into all branches until after World War I. Specialization crystallized during World War II under three organic units: (1) Earth Sciences; (2) Mineral Engineering; (3) Mineral Technology, the three together constituting the mineral arts and sciences of the modern world (Fig. 10).

The use of activated carbon to improve the selectivity in the separation of base metal minerals from bulk concentrates played an important role in the development of separation techniques employed at Tsumeb and Kombat mines. The Kombat mine, owned and operated by Tsumeb Corp. Ltd., is located in the Otavi Valley in the northern part of South West Africa, approximately 213 air miles north of Windhoek and 38 air miles south of Tsumeb, at latitude 19° 43'S and longitude 17º 41'E. The mine is linked to all major centers by both national railroad and tarmac highway systems which pass right through the town. The Otavi Minen- and Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (OMEG) mined ore on the farm Asis from 1908-1925. Tsumeb Corp. Ltd. acquired the mineral rights in 1947, started diamond drilling in 1954 and commenced mine development in 1960. The mill started production in 1962 when proven ore reserves were 3,378,084 st containing 2.85% Cu and 2.90%Pb. Annual production of 248,411 st was increased in May, 1967 to the rate of 422,990 st, which was still being maintained in 1971, when ore reserves stood at 3,054,701 st of grade 1,91% Cu and 2.5% Pb.

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paper. The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal.

ACCORDING to statements by Guertler,1 Smith and Hamilton were the first to study the copper-titanium alloys, but owing to the presence of large amounts of impurities their data are inconclusive. M. A. Hunter and I. W. Bacon later investigated the electrical conductivity and the temperature coefficients at room temperature. The present writers reported their results2 in November, 1930. Recently Droll published data on copper-titanium alloys3 which agree closely with those obtained by the authors. MATERIAL TESTED The titanium used was in the form of square sintered rods, the analysis of which runs as follows: titanium, 95.4 per cent; silicon, 0.7; iron,1.8; aluminum, 1.4; copper, 0.1; manganese, 0.05. . The ingots were prepared in a high-frequency induction furnace in air atmosphere. Their analyses are given in Table 1. Up to 5 percent titanium the alloys could be forged. Above that amount they were red short and broke up easily. Owing to their rapid absorption of nitrogen and oxygen from the air, the alloys with the higher amounts of titanium tend to form surface films which greatly increase the casting difficulties, especially when small masses of metal are handled. It was, however, possible to prepare sound ingots up to 25 per cent titanium.

Arthur Launcelot Collins was born at Truro in Cornmall, England, July 8, 1868. His father, J. H. Collins, is well kuown as an engineer, and his books have been widely read in this country: Arthur was the third son. Three of his brothers are engaged, as is his father, in the profession of mining engineering. His education, gained partly at St. Austell, partly at Falmouth, and partly at Nuttall's Collegiate School in Truro, England, was supervised by his father, who was then Lecturer on the Mining Sciences to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. In 1881, J. H. Collins went to Rio Tinto, in Spain, as chief chemist and metallurgist, and it was there that Arthur began his practical work in the laboratory and continued his studies in chenlistry and mineralogy. To the latter science he was deeply attached; and he never lost an opportunity of adding to his cabinet of minerals, of which he was an ardent collector. In 1883, he became assayer and general assistant to Mr. Nicol, Manager of the Peña del Hierro copper-mines, ncar Rio Tinto. Recently, the Denver Mining Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines began tests to detect hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions in or around mines with infrared measurement devices. Among the many potential uses of infrared detection techniques are the location of misfires, underground mine fires, combustion in waste dumps, underground water courses and loose rock. However, the primary emphasis has been placed upon the detection of loose rock in roofs, pillars and faces in underground mines. The rock along the edge of an underground opening is subject to two temperature environments: the temperature of the air in the opening, and the temperature of the rock surrounding the opening. Assuming that the rock on the edge of the opening is solid, the rock will reach an equilibrium temperature that depends upon the temperature and flow of the air, the thermal conductivity of the rock and its ambient temperature. Presume that a loose rock exists among this solid rock; because there is a temperature barrier, to some extent, between the loose and the solid, the loose rock will be affected more than the solid rock by the temperature of the air. Therefore, depending upon the temperature differences between the rock and the air, the loose will be warmer or cooler than the solid.

Swelling ground is one of the most feared problems in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and longlasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners up to 1 m (3 ft) thickness that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at 0.1 m (0.3 ft) per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This paper summarizes essential components of design construction procedures where tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. It is important to point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. Swelling can be defined as time dependent volume increase and is distinguished from squeezing, another time dependent phenomenon occurring in tunneling. Squeezing involves exceeding the shearing resistance while swelling usually does not. Swelling of rock masses can occur as swelling of the intact rock, swelling of wall rock, of gouge and of filler in the discontinuities of a rock mass, and as a combination of the above. Swelling mechanisms have been discussed elsewhere (ISRM 1983).

INTRODUCTION Spoil pile slope failures can have costly consequences. In- stability in the form of a single major event or as a recurring problem can 'mean lost production, lost resources and damaged mining equipment. In extreme but not uncomnon cases, a major spoils slide can force the closure and abandonment of a pit. Slope stability is affected by mine operating practices as we1 l as geologic conditions and material parameters. Mine operators can enhance spoil pile stability through constructive changes in their operations. Attention to the causes of in- stability can lead to development of operating practices tailored to site specific problems. Action aimed at limiting future instability is frequently more cost effective than continually "coping" with unstable spoils. The effect of mine operations on material properties is often overlooked because the "data" are not easily quantified nor input directly into stability analysis equations. We have found, however, that miners' experience with their own operation, as well as data pooled from similar operations, yields relation- ships which can be utilized to solve stability problems. The repetitive nature of area type surface coal mines with successive spoil pile rows further enables the development of useful site specific relationships. Stability problems can be mitigated by applying these relationships.
