It has been suggested that grain boundary motion during creep is a two-stage process, i.e., sliding followed by migration. Wienbergl found alternate sliding and migration of aluminum tricrystals tested in shear. He concluded that curves of grain boundary sliding (G. B. S.) vs time were not reproducible from specimen to specimen. Couling and Roberts,' who worked on polycrystalline magnesium, found that sliding and migration were interdependent. They were able to correlate the amount of sliding with the number of sliding-migration cycles, i.e., the amount of migration observed metallographically. Rhines, Bond, and Kissel found that the curves of grain boundary sliding vs time were spasmodic but they did not find any migration of the boundary. Some recent creep tests on bicrystals of high-purity zinc (99.99 pct) help to elucidate the role of grain boundary migration in the G. B. S. process. Last time there was a Take Five in these pages, it dealt largely with the matters considered by your Board of Directors at the meeting on October 20, 1970, in St. Louis, Mo. It was impossible to cover all the points worthy of discussion in the space available. So, at the end of the Take Five in the December issue of [i=], I promised to continue in the next installment. Unfortunately, I was unable to keep that promise. On December 2 your humble servant joined the ranks of those who have suffered a coronary occlusion. While I was away from the office, the very excellent SME staff team that we have built up over the years kept things going without bothering the "old man" unnecessarily. Assistant Executive Secretary, John V. Beall, Mrs. Lillian E. Donaldson, Assistant to the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Ruth Orologio, Administrative Assistant, and Mrs. Alice Ruiz exceeded even their usual dedicated efforts. As a result, the SME came up to the Centennial-Annual Meeting in great shape.

In a low and gently sloping ridge extending some 1500 ft. southward from Squaw Mt., and now.covered by the buildings, or crossed by the railroads and streets, of a portion of the city of Victor, there is an ancient volcanic vent or crater, which exhibits one of the most interesting phenomena of the great upheaval and volcanic disturbance that built up the hills of the famous Cripple Creek gold-field—of the period when mass was piled on mass to form the mountains and foothills; when fissures and craters opened, and lavas, welling up, overflowed the surface, until, finally cooling, they effectually choked their vents, thus forming many of the ridges that stand out in bold relief, and the dikes that seam the Continent. This particular occurrence, though limited in dimensions, shows in miniature certain stages of the eruptions of Etna and Vesuvius,* Kilauea and Loa; and illustrates what was (with the exception of the penetrating dikes) the closing chapter of the early volcanoes whose emanations have contributed to the

THE axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc., intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic .rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmuch as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. I was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Müller,1 Foullon,2 and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers.

RECENT studies have indicated that there may be considerable difference in the cleanliness of the central pipe cavity of open top ingots. It has been speculated that some of this difference arises becausk of reactions that occur during reheating in the blooming mill soaking pits. In this respect, it has been recognized that an oxide coating or flow of slaggy material in the cavity could inhibit welding during hot rolling and thus reduce the amount of sound product which may be obtained. This note is intended to summarize some observations on the structure of a split ingot top which may be useful in describing a mechanism whereby the shrinkage cavity could be oxidized during reheating. A 221/2x241/2 in., big-end-down, test ingot was secured from a routine production heat. The chemical analysis representing this ingot is as follows: 0.08 pct C, 1.04 pct Mn, 0.062 pct P, 0.315 pct S, and 0.02 pct Si. When rock is subjected to a load it is deformed. Ordinarily this is observed in a mine as the displacement of one point with respect to another-the deflection of the roof, which may be observed as a convergence between roof and floor; or the extrusion of material from the rib, which may be observed as a decrease of the distance between the rib and the post of a timber set. The effect of excessive pressure may be a rockburst if the rock is strong, or it may be "squeezing" ground if the rock is "soft". Some desirable effects of high stress (high in relation to strength) are the caving of roof in a longwall mining operation, the caving of ore in block caving, and the decrease in mechanical energy required to break down the mineral seam in a retreating pillar-robbing operation. In any case, whether the observable effect of rock load is desirable or undesirable, it is a displacement, and depends on the following four factors:

The occurrence of mercury minerals in precious metal-bearing ores has long been noted. During cyanide leaching of these gold-silver ores, some mercury forms a soluble cyanide complex, which is present in the pregnant leach solution and passes through the process operations of the cyanidation mill. As a result, mercury is found on the electrowinning cell cathodes, on the stripped carbon before It is volatilized during carbon regeneration, or in theme tailings pond. The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines is examining the effectiveness of two ion-exchange resins to adsorb gold and/or mercury from a cyanide leach solution. The resins, Duolite A-7 and Ionac A-305, were contacted with leach solutions containing varying concentrations of mercury, gold, and silver. The resin A-7 reached a maximum mercury loading of 0.0165 lb Hg/ft3, and A-305 reached a maximum mercury capacity of greater than 0.44 lb Hg/ft3. Adsorption of gold by both A-7 and A-305 is influenced by the presence of additional ions in the solution.

Open pit blasting can be a low cost routine or a high cost bottleneck depending on geology, environment and the operator's ability to master site conditions. Because blasting is a repetitive operation, there should be ample opportunity to optimize the process; but ordinarily this optimization is rarely achieved and then only if conditions remain consistent and predictable. Often, however, and particularly with porphyry coppers, hidden differences in rock characteristics nullify the operator's best efforts. At a porphyry copper deposit being mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, all of the following rock types occur; oxidized and fresh porphyry, altered and silicified limestone, explosion breccia, rhyolite, sandstone, shale and several others. The units can cover large areas or be limited to a few tens of feet in maximum dimension. They are rarely visible on the bench surface and often do not show up in the bench slope. Even though the blastability of these rocks varies substantially, a generally-uniform blasting pattern was formerly used with disappointing results. Secondary blasting was often required and high bottoms occurred frequently, overblasting wasted drilling time, and explosives caused excessive throw.

A series of experimental investigations was carried out in situ and in the laboratory with special emphasis on the gassy seams of the Kozlu District, Zonguldak Coalfield, Turkey. The nature of firedamp emission in the return airways of coal faces together with the individual parameters affecting the phnomenon were studied and the observations are discussed. The residual methane content of the lump coal samples was determined by the volumetric method. All the evidence obtained from the field and laboratory results indicate that certain coal seams under production in the Kozlu District of the Zonguldak Coalfield are very gassy in nature. There are cases where in the return airways of some coal faces the total emission of methane reached up to 3300 cu ft pure methane per ton of coal mined. From the impressions gained in the course of the present work and from available literature, retention and emission of methane are basically large-scale phenomena, dependent on exogenous and endogenous parameters in coal mine, which may effect to a greater or lesser degree actual firedamp incidents.

ONE of the earliest investigations of ground water in Florida was made in 1513 when Ponce de Leon arrived at St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. The history of the development of the water resources of the State shows that the large artesian reservoir that underlies Florida was discovered in the latter part of the last century. Part of that history is given by L. C. Johnson1 who states that the first successful artesian well in Florida was drilled at St. Augustine between 1880 and 1882. After the City of Jacksonville failed to obtain a flow of artesian water at a depth of nearly 400 ft and abandoned the drilling, R. N. Ellis, City Engineer, and L. C. Johnson, using Johnson's knowledge of the geologic structure of the artesian reservoir, estimated correctly that artesian water could be obtained at a depth of about 500 ft. Thus began the development of the large artesian system in the northeastern part of the State. In 1908, the Florida Geological Survey issued its first report on the ground water of central Florida.

It is now reached by the Utah Southern Railroad and its extension, and the last 100 miles are run by stages. These vehicles are called "jerkies" in the West, which name conveys a good idea of the comfort they afford, and the relief experienced when you alight. Arriving at Silver Reef, the main camp of the district, one sees at once that he stands where once a surging sea had its domain, marked now by heavy sandstone deposits of a red and white color. The town itself, a neat, clean, and orderly mining town, is encircled on the north by traohyte and granite mountains, skirting to the west. THE Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resur-gence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barcenite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available.

X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques were employed to examine the impurity phases occurring in as-swaged and recrystallized chromium produced fvom high-purity iodide chromium crystals. Chromium oxides are found to form in a consistent manner associated with the temperature of recrystallization. Microscopically observable second phase particles of Cr203 are observed to form intergranulurly beginning at 1300T. Beginning at 1500°C. Cr30, is formed intergvanulurly, atzd at 1600°C and above Cr30, is also formed in association with migrating grain boundaries. Geometrical traces formed by particles of this high temperature oxide uithin the grains rez)eal the histmy of grain boundary motion. X-ray evidence is presented which suggests the existence of a high temperature form of Cr203. Other impurity phases in addition to the oxides of chromium are also present. I. INTRODUCTION THE geology of the Tintic mining district, fully treated, would occupy an elaborate monograph. This less comprehensive paper is devoted primarily to the occurrence and origin of the orebodies of the district, while space is given to those phases of the general geology only which seem necessary to a proper setting of such a discussion. The first geological report on the Tintic district to be issued was that by Tower and Smith, published in 1899, in the form of a paper in Part III of the Nineteenth Annual Report of the U. S. Geological Survey, and also as Folio No. 65, Geologic Atlas of the United States. About four years ago a second investigation was begun by Waldemar Lindgren and G. F. Loughlin, of the U. S. Geological Survey. With the exception of a paper on the oxidized zinc ores of the Tintic district by Mr. Loughlin, the results of their work are still unpublished. The writer's acquaintance with the district began in the fall, of 1913, and has extended over a period of about two years.

This paper is partially based on a comprehensive ground control investigation that was conducted by Harza Engineering Company under a contract from the Bureau of Mines. This investigation required in- stalling several types of ground movement indicating devices on the surface and in the mine. The major instrumentation systems consisted of hydraulic borehole pressure cells, multi-point extensometers, in- clinometers, convergence indicators, Jack pressure recorders time domain reflectometers, and a 200 station subsidence network. The investigation demonstrated the versatility of the system. We were able to install pressure cell s to a depth of over 200 feet in the coal bed and we were successful in installing 10 pen mechanical recorders to monitor differential strata movement. In this paper, we have briefly discussed data from 18 borehole pres- sure cells, two time domain reflectometer cables and four subsidence lines. The data collected showed that the front and rear abutment pressures were approximate1 y 1000 feet (304.81~1) to 1200 feet (356.76111) from the active face. The peak pressure was about 4 times the over- burden pressure.

THE electrical specific resistance of rocks in the field is measured by sending a current through a medium of great volume, compared to the electrodes, whose resistivity should be measured. The whole resistance can be determined by the Wheatstone bridge and the specific resistance calculated by a well-known formula. The resistivity of some rocks in place in Germany and in Switzerland is given; first, of a rock near the surface, and especially near electrodes. Practical applications are made in the determination: (1) of the continuity of a conducting orebody; (2) of the surface area of an orebody; (3) in the detection of a water-bearing fault in a salt mine. Preliminary observations are described: (1) on the influence of the depth of ground-water table; (2) on the detection of gas under high pressure in coal seams. The observations in this paper of the electrical resistivity of rocks and soil in place are along the lines of the very interesting method and results of the Messrs. Gish, Rooney, Hotchkiss and Fisher.1,2 All the work described has been done since 1920.

The dike here described is exposed in the workings of the Wedge and Bachelor mines, on the southern side of Red Canon, north of the town of Ouray, Colorado. Its course is north 80° east, or nearly east and west, and it hades to the north about 10°. It rarely outcrops, and was nowhere seen at the surface near the mines. A specimen collected by Dr. A. C. Spencer about two miles to the westward, near the mouth of Red Creek, indicates, however, a probable exposure of the dike near this point. The Wedge and Bachelor mines lie in a nearly horizontal series of fine-grained, light-grey sandstones, alternating with beds of very fine-grained shale of the same color. The shale as encountered underground is unusually compact and massive, but weathers readily on exposure, and splits much after the manner of ordinary shale. When fresh it closely resembles some finely arenaceous limestones, but it does not effervesce with acids, and is eseentially a fine, indurated, siliceous silt. THE work of D. J. McAdam1,2 at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station, Annapolis, Md., on what has been called by him "corrosion fatigue" has focussed the attention of the engineering profession in general, and of those interested especially in the study of corrosion in particular, on the importance of making tests which will indicate as nearly as possible what can be expected from a given material in service. Pitting is unquestionably the chief agent operating so tremendously to reduce fatigue limits, but in the light of previous work3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 it is fair to assume that absorbed hydrogen resulting from the action of the corroding medium upon steel may, under certain conditions, have a perceptible influence. The experiments described in this paper deal more precisely with stressless corrosion, or "prior-corrosion fatigue, "9 and have been carried out to test such an assumption, to segregate, if possible, the effect of pitting from that of absorbed hydrogen, and although very preliminary in nature they indicate results which are striking.
