THE Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is situated on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. (Fig. 1.) The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birchgrove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is situated about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast. (Fig. 2.) The coal measures are exposed in the cliffs on the coast line, which rise to an average height of 30 ft., and are almost continuous throughout the length of the field. The portion of the coal field under land forms a small segment of a circle, the greatest distance from the coast landwards is 9 miles, and it occupies an area of 200 sq. miles. The greatest distance developed seawards from the shore by mining operations is 2 ¼ miles. The strata maintain a regularity of dip at this distance, proving a submarine area of about 70 sq. miles. How much further the coal field extends seawards is unknown, but the indications are that it extends far beyond the present economical working limit and in all probability there is a vast submarine coal field. The productive coal measures are of Carboniferous age, these being underlaid by beds of sandstone, locally classed as millstone grit, which define the southern limit of the field,, while a spur of syenitic hills cuts off the coal-bearing strata on the north. Two main anticlinal folds having a general course easterly divide the field into three basins named from north to south: Sydney Mines-Lingan, Glace Bay and Morien.

THIS study was undertaken to round out an investigation on the effects of solid environments on the brittle fracture of zinc single crystals.' In the previous work it was demonstrated that the presence of a surface film increased the cleavage strength of crystals whose basal planes were oriented almost parallel to the tensile axis by some 43 pct. This increase was observed to be independent of the type of surface-coating material, as well as of thickness of film above a certain small critical value (about 200 to 300A). These observations were described sat- isfactorily by a dislocation-pile-up-at-a-barrier model of brittle fracture2 in which twins modifying the dislocation path act as barriers, their increase in number and homogeneity of distribution brought about by the presence of the surface film. From previous work reported on the strength of ductile metal crystals as affected by gaseous and liquid environments,3 it may be concluded that the effects of these media are present only when the environment produces a surface film on the initially clean-surfaced crystal, or when it has a disintegrating effect on a previously existing surface layer. Similarly, it might be expected that an increase in cleavage strength of initially clean zinc crystals (xo = 3", A, - 28") will result only when the gas or liquid reacts with the crystal to produce a solid, adherent surface film. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. By independent control of temperature and water vapor pressure, it is shown that charge depends primarily upon relative humidity, not on temperature or water pressure alone. All the effects of temperature changes other than modification of humidity are apparently small. However, humidity control can be achieved through manipulation of the more tractable variable, temperature. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. Some of their effects have been described in general by Fraas1,2 and by Ralston.3 The influence of temperature and humidity may be considered a problem in industrial separations because humidity, especially, is not normally controlled, hence leads to unpredicted quality control problems. The problem is significant whether the separation is based on conductivity differences or on contact electrification. There is no doubt that water adsorbs from humid atmospheres onto mineral surfaces resulting in conductivity changes.'-8 An empirical relationship between conductivity and humidity is1.4-6,8 where a and b are constants peculiar to the substrate, and s and h are the conductivity and relative humidity respectively. Some authors have taken advantage of differences in a and b among minerals to make or propose electrodynamic separations in which h is the key control variable. Fraasl,2 reported that the charge developed on quartz and feldspar through contact with aluminum is sensitive to humidity, as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The importance of grain size and its control in wrought brass needs no lengthy discussion, since specifications so often make exact control imperative. Aids to this control are therefore of interest. The effect of a number of different elements on the grain growth of brass under various conditions of annealing has been reported in the technical literature. In particular, a paper by Cook and Miller1 a few years ago, with the discussion that followed, gave valuable information on the effects of iron, phosphorus, manganese, aluminum, aluminum plus nickel, and aluminum plus silicon. Price12 in his discussion of that paper, added a description of some commercial brasses that exhibited a grain-refining effect owing to the presence of 2 per cent A1 and 1 per cent Ni. Gibson and Doss3 have recently given data on the effect of iron on annealing high brass. No comprehensive study, however, has been given to the effect of additions of chromium. It has been the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of adding various amounts of chromium to a plain cartridge brass, particularly in regard to the effect on grain growth in various annealing treatments after cold-working. Prepakation of Alloys Alloys of high-purity brass of 68.5 Cu, 31.5 Zn composition were made containing from 0 to 0.17 per cent Cr. These were produced in induction furnaces, using unlined graphite crucibles to hold the charge. The melts were cast into rectangular chill molds giving ingots about % by 3 by 10 in. in size.

Numerous investigators have studied the various factors that influence the ultimate strength of model mine pillars, such as ratio of height-to-least width; restraint or friction on the top and bottom; 1,2 the effect of stress distribution in pillars on their strength;3 and the scaling factors involved in applying the results of model pillars to full-scale pillars. However, the load-bearing capacity of pillars after initial failure does not appear to have been investigated. Yet many mines employ methods in which small pillars or pillar remnants are left systematically; these pillars crush as mining progresses and, of necessity, affect the behavior of surrounding rock even after initial failure. The effect of such crushed or crushing pillars depends largely on their load-deformation characteristics. This chapter presents the results of a preliminary investigation to determine the load-deformation characteristics of a few model mine pillars to and beyond initial failure. Various investigators have also studied the elastic and viscoelastic behavior of mine structures. In such studies, computers are frequently employed to obtain numerical results by the finite difference or finite element methods. It would be entirely feasible to write a program that would approximate the load-deformation characteristics of pillars to and beyond the crushing stage if these characteristics were known. More accurate information on the induced stresses and deformations in overlying strata and on surface subsidence could be obtained, information which should result in better strata control by enabling the engineer to calculate more accurately the effects of changes in pillar spacing, size, and shape.

No one who knows the conditions of altitude, difficulty of access, shortness of working-season, etc., under which the work of the U. S. Geological Survey in the Rocky Mountains is carried on, can fail to be impressed with the magnitude and accuracy of the results obtained. Yet, in the necessarily brief time given to any one district, maily minor features must remain unregistered. The purpose of this paper is merely to place on record observations, made during nearly eighteen years, of local phenomena in themselves unimportant, which, however, if collated with similar memoranda from neighboring regions, may lead to something of value. The Telluride quadrangle in southwest Colorado is a tract of fifteen geographical minutes on a side, the NW. corner of which is in Long. 108º W., Lat. 38º N. Topographically it is essentially a lofty horseshoe, some of the peaks of which rise more than 14,000 ft. above tide, the interior (with an average altitude of 9000 ft.) being the eastern edge of the rolling Colorado-Utah plateau, and, in its turn, deeply cut by the canons of the San Miguel river and its tributaries. The range-summits are mainly igneous rocks, partly intrusive (such as massive " stocks" and laccolites, left bare by superior erosion), but mostly bedded volcanics of an average vertical thickness of 3500 ft., which change with changing height from andesite to rhyolite. The lowest series of these volcanic rocks, known as the San Juan formation, lies conformably upon the sedimentary San Miguel conglomerate, which dips gently east., and is attributed provisionally to the

METALLURGISTS are properly interested in papers dealing with subjects ranging from the theories of the metallic state to very practical details on the use of metals. A review of theoretical metallurgy naturally excludes papers concerned with the usefulness of metals and limits itself to those concerned purely with the science of metals. Even in this more limited field the reviewer is confronted with thousands of papers dealing with facts and theories of metallic behavior, from which he can select only a few hundred. The selection is necessarily highly arbitrary. Certain classes of papers definitely fall within the scope of this review. Thus, papers on the deformation of metals, on the structure of alloys, on recrystallization, to select only a few, are fully represented. Other subjects, which verge on what is generally accepted as the science of metals, such as the magnetic properties of metals, the less familiar electrical properties and theories, adsorption of gases by metal surfaces, and the like, are treated scantily. Particular attention is given to reviews of subjects that fall with in the groups chosen; in a summary such as this, which is largely in the nature of a progress report, capably written reviews are of importance, particularly since the monograph and text book literature is so meager in this field. THEORIES OF STATES OF AGGREGATION The electron theory of metals and the relation between possible electron structure and the magnetic properties have been discussed (317.307)† the electron theory of liquid metals, especially with respect to electrical conductivity, has been considered(306).

The ability of activated charcoal or carbon to adsorb complex metal ions has been recognized for many years, but it wasn't until the late 1940s and early 1950s that attempts were made to employ carbon-In-Pulp or C. I. P. processing to the recovery of gold. Early plants using the process were those at the Golden Cycle in Cripple Creek, Colorado, the Getchell Mine near Golconda, Nevada, and at the Idria Mine in Honduras. Recovery of the carbon from the pulp was done by screening or flotation, and recovery of gold from the carbon was done by burning the carbon (a very difficult task) or by sending it to a smelter. Unfortunately at the time, the price of gold was still fixed at $3-5 per ounce and labor costs were rising to the point where these mines were no longer able to operate. Consequently, C. I. P. treatment was temporarily forgotten. In the early 1970s, however, Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota, were being forced by environmental regulations to discontinue the use of mercury for amalgamation in their 7,500 ton per day plant, and at the same time were encountering high labor costs in the slime circuit of the plant, where over 2,000 tons of slimes were filtered each day in Merrill plate and frame filter presses. Shortly before that, researchers of the United States Bureau of Mines had developed the caustic -cyanide method of stripping gold from activated carbon and an electrolytic cell (now known as the Zadra cell) to recover gold from the carbon strip liquor. Homestake and the United States Bureau of Mines then jointly operated a C. I. P. pilot plant at Lead. Results were immediately favorable and a 2,400 ton per day C. I. P. plant was then built to treat the slime fraction of the Homestake ore. (See Au and Ag Cyanidation Plant Practice, Volume I, SME of AIME, 1975. Later, Homestake built a second plant at Creede, Colorado, to treat the slime fraction of the tailings from a silver-lead flotation plant. Next was Duval Corporation's 3,000 ton per day C. I. P. plant at Battle Mountain, Nevada. Both of these latter plants are described in this volume. C. I. Four alloys that precipitate the alpha phase from the beta of the copper-zinc system were heat-treated in various ways to develop as many forms of the segregate as possible. It was found that the precipitate may have the form either of plates or of needles. Plates usually result when precipitation occurs at low temperatures and needles when precipitation takes place at high temperatures. The needles tend to align themselves along certain planes in the matrix and to coalesce into plnte-like structures. The two phases were found to be related so that a (111) plane and [Oil] direction of the precipitate are parallel to a 10111 plane and 11111 direction of the matrix. DISCUSSION (E. A. (Written discussion).—Tllis report by Dr. Marzke covers completely all possible heat treatinents over a considerable range of compositiol~s in which a1pha precipitates from beta brass, and may be said to complete the Inctallographic part of this problern The lining up of ncedles of segregate to form plates, espeeially as shown in Fig. 5, appears to he regular, although the author's frequency plot in Fig. 11 makes it appear rather irregular. Has the author attempted anY correlation between some of the major dircetions and the oricntntaion of the parent grain as determined by X-ray analysis? Also, in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the cross-sections of the needles appear to be straightsided and regular. Have these directions been correlated with the matrix latttice? Dr. Mnrzkr 's method of interpretation of the orientation rclationships between the alpha. and beta phases is a bit uncertain and seems to wed more explanation. If this relationship, as staited is such that :L (1111 plane and a [I 10] direction of that plane in the precipitate is parallel to a. {110} p1ane and a [111] direction of that, plane in the matrix, there mill be a maximum of 24 possible orientations of the alpha phase within a. single grain of the beta phasc. This relationship is expressed strercographical1y in Fig. 13, ill which the locations of a11 of the alpha {111} poles for the 24 orientations of alpha me given. Fig. 12 chccks fairly closely with this thcoretical plot,. with a few exeeptions which may be due to the inaceuracy inherent in the method used by the anthor in determining the orientations of the segregates. The method might have been refined somewhat had corrections been made for the displacement of the slip p1ancs upon deformation.

Experimental results are given for the rate 0.f solution of nitrogen in y iron in the temperature range 1000° to 1200°C. It is shown that, when purified reacting gas is used, the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The difhsiuity of nitrogen in y iron is calculated from the results and the equation logD = —(8800/T) — 0.04 is recommended to represent the temperature dependence of the diffusivity. In some experiments using unpurified nitrogen, solution rates are found to be slower than those attributable to a solely solid-state diffusion process. Indications are that in the presence of impurities in the gas, e.g., H,O, chemisorption of nitrogen at the surface is hindered and becomes a rate-controlling process for the transfer of nitrogen across the gas -metal interface. ALTHOUGH the solubility of nitrogen in y iron at known nitrogen activities has been well-established,'-a the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in iron are not known. The work of Darken, Smith, and Filer' indicates that at temperatures below about 1300°C the rate of solution of nitrogen in y iron is controlled by a chemical reaction at the metal surface, while at temperatures above about 1300°C the rate-controlling process is the diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. Fast and verrijps studied the denitro-genization of y iron using wet hydrogen at 950°C and their results clearly indicate that the rate of nitrogen removal is controlled by diffusion of nitrogen in the metal. In Part I of this series of papers, the kinetics of the solution of nitrogen in y iron are discussed in the light of the present experimental work. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. The reaction chamber consisted of a platinum wire-wound resistance furnace with a re-crystallized alumina reaction tube. The temoerature of the furnace, which was automatically controlled to approximately 1°C, was measured with a Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and a potentiometer. The temperature distribution in the working zone of the furnace was determined using a calibrated Pt/Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple and the hot zone was found to be approximately 3 in. long with a temperature variation of * 3°C. A series of experiments was also carried out at 1000°C and pressures above atmospheric using a pressure vessel which was similar in construction to that described elsewhere.1° Materials. SINCE the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. STANDARD BALL-MILL GRINDABILITY TESTS The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The combined minus 6-mesh screen undersize is mixed, sampled and screen-analyzed, and its apparent specific gravity is determined by packing and shaking in a standard container, and weighing. The apparent specific gravity ordinarily is about 60 per cent of the true specific gravity. The unit volume present in the mill in all tests is 700 c.c. of the packed minus 6-mesh roll product, and the number of grams occupying 700 c.c. is the unit test weight. This weight is placed in the mill dry, ground for the number of revolutions estimated to be necessary, discharged, and screened mechanically in three testing sieves of the mesh size at which the test is to be conducted. The oversize, or circulating load, is weighed, sufficient fresh minus 6-mesh feed is added to bring the total weight up to that of 700 c.c., and the charge is returned to the mill for a second grinding period. All standard ball-mill tests are conducted at 250 per cent circulating load, and the number of revolutions in the mill necessary to obtain this circulating load at any grinding period is estimated from the results of the previous period. The number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution of the mill approaches its final equilibrium value after several grinding periods, and this is recorded as the grindability, or relative ease of grinding, of the sample. A cylindrical ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, with a smooth lining and rounded corners, is used with a revolution counter. Under standard grinding conditions it runs at 70 r.p.m., and contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams, ranging from I ½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Review of difficulties experienced in drilling directional wells in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field showed most failures of drill pipe, drill collars and casing to have been associated with excessive dog-legs. Alleviation of difficulties was approached by synthesizing theoretical and practical concepts in a planned dog-leg control program. Preventive measures necessary to control dog-leg severity and corrective measures used to reduce unacceptable doglegs are discussed. When other measures fail, deliberative measures as outlined can be employed after the probable cumulative fatigue damage to be sustained by the drill pipe has been determined. Results of a program successful in virtually eliminating problems stemming from excessive dog-legs indicate that control of dog-leg severity in directional wells is feasible and will cause no decrease in the over-all drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Prompted by an increasing frequency of drill pipe, drill collar and casing failures, a study of 50 directional wells representing 592,000 ft of hole, including 444,000 ft of deviated hole, drilled in the offshore Grand Isle Block 43 field was conducted in early 1965. A number of drill pipe washouts and six keyseating problems were recorded and a detailed review was made of 16 failures which had required fishing effort in 10 of the 50 directional wells drilled prior to June, 1965. These problem wells are exemplified by Wells G and F for which pertinent data are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Data pertaining to all of the 16 failures are summarized in Table 1. Inspection of these data shows most of the problems to have been associated with dog-legs in excess of theoretical limits suggested by Lubinski' and excessive dog-legging is indicated to have been concomitant with whipstocking in several of the problem wells. Results of the investigation agreed with those reported by Schenck2 who had concluded that problems could be expected when dog-leg severity exceeded limits proposed by Lubinski. Since Schenck had demonstrated the desirability and feasibility of drilling directional wells without excessive dog-legging, a dog-leg control program was established in June, 1965 for wells drilled in the Grand Isle Block 43 field. This paper reviews the methods by which theoretical and practical concepts were synthesized to develop a program of preventive, corrective and deliberative measures which virtually eliminated problems stemming from excessive dog-legs in directional wells. The object of this paper is to show the manner in which typical electrodeposits of hexagonal-close-packed metals—zinc, titanium, and zirconium—tend to form. The conditions of electrodeposi-tion markedly affect the nature of the deposits in regard to crystal size, orientation, and appearance. No attempt is made to correlate cell conditions with deposit quality but, rather, characteristic types of deposits were selected and a study made to show the relationship between outward appearance and crystal structure. The zinc deposits were made in aqueous electrolytes and the titanium and zirconium deposited from fused salt baths. ZINC deposits studied were made in the American Smelting and Refining Co.'s Central Research Laboratories. They were representative of bright, shiny, smooth deposits, which can be obtained by using proper current densities and electrolyte addition agents, and of deposits which are dull and tend to be nodular. Four deposits were selected which ranged from smooth and bright to very nodular and dull, and their classifications are shown in Table I. These were examined microscopically and were found to differ quite markedly in outward surface structure and in microstructure. The outward surface variation is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4. At X50 the texture could be seen to progress from granular to platelike to smooth. The microstructures of the deposits' cross sections from starting sheet to outer surface are shown in Figs. 5 through 8. The dull nodular deposits (sample Nos. 1 and 2) show some tendency for acicular growth. The platelike sample (No. 3) shows tendency for columnar growth development and the smooth deposit (No. 4) has a well developed columnar structure. Back-reflection X-ray patterns of the deposit surfaces revealed some interesting information. The crystal orientation was random in all deposits except the smooth deposit. Fig. 9 is a typical back-reflection pattern of a nodular deposit. All planes are reflecting in the proper relative intensity. The pattern of the smooth deposit is shown in Fig. 10. The only planes which reflect are the (10.4). This series of planes is in the right position, with the FeKa radiation used, to satisfy the Bragg equation if the basal planes {00.1) are at right angles to the X-ray beam. The results were interpreted to mean that in the bright smooth deposit preferred orientation has occurred with the basal hexagonal planes oriented in the plane of the sheet but with all other planes randomly oriented around the c-axis.

The descriptive term "rock mass" encompasses individual block dimensions ranging from centimeters to many tens of meters. Strength and deformability vary both qualitatively and quantitatively as a result of this size range. A key issue is therefore the appropriate size of the test sample. A large body of test data was reviewed to determine the influence of block size on the displacement required to mobilize peak strength. It is shown that the shear strength and shear stiffness reduce with increased block size due to reduced effective joint roughness, and due to reduced asperity strength. Both are a function of the delayed mobilization of roughness with increasing block size. A method of scaling shear strength and shear displacement from laboratory to in situ block sizes is suggested. It is based on the assumption that size effects disappear when the natural block size is exceeded. This simplification appears to be justified over a significant range of block sizes, but is invalidated when shearing along individual joints is replaced by rotational or kink-band deformation, as seen in more heavily jointed rock masses. Recent laboratory tests on model block assemblies illustrate some important effects of block size on deformability and Poisson's ratio.

The effect of temperature and orientation on the plastic behaviour of an impure titaniferous magnetite from Palabora (South Africa) has been investigated. Prismatic specimens were axially compressed along [001], [110] and [111]. The strain rate was about 3.10-6 s-1. Trace analyses of glide lines revealed a plastic anisotropy due to glide on several non-equivalent crystallographic planes. At 200 °C {111}<112> twinning, {111}<110> slip and {100}<011> slip have been operative. At 400 °C {111}<110> slip and {100}<011> slip are primary glide modes. {110}<110> slip seems to be a secondary glide mode in the [001] specimens at 400 °C. {III}<112> twin glide generates isolated sharp lamellae. {111}<110> slip produces smooth surface striae. {100}<011> slip is characterized by coarse and partially wavy slip bands. {I10}<110> slip displays faint remarkably equidistant glide lines. The critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) decrease with rise of temperature. The CRSS ratio of slip on [100) to slip on {lll} increases from 1.1 at 200 °C to 1.4 at 400 °C giving rise to a distinct flow anisotropy of the magnetite at 400 °C.

Previously, two groups have conducted studies in order to define the influences of the intermediate principal stress. Mogi studied biaxial compression on prisms of Dunham dolomite and concluded that the intermediate principal stress should be taken into account. His study showed that failure strength increases with increasing [02], but less than the strength increase with increasing confining pressure. Handin, Heard, and Mogouirk&apos;s study on cylinders of Solenhofen limestone in torsion also found that the strength depends on the magnitude of [02]. More recent investigations by Mogi varying all three principal stresses independently and by Wawersik varying two of the principal stresses independently provide more detailed data confirming the effect of [02] on failure. All these tests were at low strain rates, and only the work of Wawersik reports measurement of all strains. The investigation here measures axial and transverse strains and included uniaxial and triaxial stress compression tests and biaxial stress tests using tubular samples (axial load and internal or external fluid pressure) at strain rates to 103/sec to provide the stress-strain response and to define the maximum stress or yield locus of Solenhofen limestone and Westerly granite.

During the year of 1940, wildcat wells were drilled in 32 counties of Mississippi; 85 wells in all. These were scattered over the state from the most northern county to the southern counties and from the Mississippi River on the west to the Alabama line on the east. Yazoo County, with 19, received the largest number. The average depth of all the wells was 5333 ft. The shallowest well completed as a dry hole was in Yalobusha County, aban-doned at 1392 ft. in the Selma. The deepest well drilled was in Scott County, abandoned at 10,365 ft. in the Lower Cretaceous Paluxy. G. C. Grasty drilled the Kentucky Lumber Company No. I well, sec. 7, T. 10 S., R. 10 E., Itawamba County, to a depth of 3530 ft. and bottomed his hole in the Ordivician. Tinsley Oil Field.—In the Tinsley oil field 104 wells were completed as producers during 1940. Five producing sands have been logged with a total average thickness of I57 ft. of oil sand.
