Metal mines were developed long before coal mines and the early lighting of underground workings was effected by torches and candles. The early coal mines were outcrop workings and little trouble was experienced from gas, but as the mines became deeper and shaft mines were opened it became apparent that an open-fame lamp was exceedingly dangerous where gas occurred. No satisfactory way of lighting gaseous coal mines was found until Sir Humphrey Davy brought out his famous safety lamp in 1815. The introduction of the Davy lamp was a great step forward but it was unsatisfactory from a light standpoint because the gauze absorbed a large percentage of the light given out by the flame. Clanny corrected this by the introduction of a cylindrical glass lens, which not only permitted a free distribution of the light from the flame but added greatly to the safety by eliminating the possibility of the flame coming in contact with the gauze and by protecting the flame against air currents. A very complete story of the flame safety lamp since its inception is given in the U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin No. 227, by J. W. Paul, I;. C. Ilsley and E. J. Gleim, published in 1924. A little more recent publication, known as Safety in Mines Research Board Paper No. 4, entitled "The Light Power of Flame Safety Lamps," by R. V. Wheeler and D. W. Woodhead, was published in England in 1927. The flame safety lamp was the only lamp available for gaseous mines for about 100 years. Although the incandescent electric lamp has been in use over 50 years, it was not found safe to use this lamp from wired circuits in gaseous locations. The storage battery was advocated shortly after the development of the incandescent lamp but until the introduction of the tungsten filament in the miniature mine-lamp bulb, the battery lamp was not a real possibility because of the excessive weight of the battery necessary to produce a sufficient amount of light. The handling and disposal of mine water is a much larger problem than is apparent at first glance. Many more tons of water are removed from underground coal mines in the United States each year than tons of coal. In the old anthracite region of Pennsylvania the average was around 32.7 t (36 st) of water for each ton of coal produced, while bituminous mines average about 4.5 or 5.4 t (5 or 6 st). Water encountered in the mines may come from several different sources. In mines with light cover and without a firm solid roof, rain may seep directly into the workings. This is also true of deeper mines where pillar falls have broken the roof to the surface. The top under creek beds is generally faulty and broken and water comes through the roof at this point. Deeper mines are frequently overlain by water-bearing strata and pillar breaks and faulty top can admit water, while places running to the dip often accumulate water which comes up through the bottom. In all cases, except where passing under a year-round stream, the amount of water made is usually pretty closely connected with the weather-more water during the rainy season, less in the dry, although the deeper a nine is, the longer it is before changes in rainfall are felt. Another source of water, not connected with seasonal changes, is old water, accumulated over a period of time in abandoned workings of the mine, or from flooded adjacent mines. Here the water filters through the coal, the parting, or comes up through cracks in the bottom. Similarly, core holes, drilled to prospect the property, can be a source of unexpected water and modern safety requirements for dust-allaying water at the working faces can turn a pleasant working area into a soggy mess over the weekend if the system is not properly maintained and operated. Why water must be disposed of is obvious. If allowed to accumulate, sooner or later the mine will fill up, or at least it will become "roofed" in low places, blocking ventilation and traffic. IN the decade beginning 1850, the development by William Kelly in I the U.S.A. and Henry Bessemer in England of the pneumatic method of refining pig iron, known as the Bessemer process, gave the world the first method of producing low-cost steel in large volumes. Briefly, the Bessemer process consists of blowing air through liquid blast furnace iron in a refractory-lined vessel known as a converter. The air enters the iron in the furnace bottom through tuyeres, and during its passage through the iron removes the carbon, manganese, and silicon by oxidation. The heat produced by oxidation is sufficient to raise the temperature of the liquid metal to normal steel casting temperatures and, in addition, to melt some scrap. In the 1860's, the open hearth process was introduced which in the early part of the twentieth century surpassed the Bessemer process in steel production. In the early 1870's, Thomas and Gilchrist discovered that phosphorus could also be removed if lime were added and the converter lined with basic refractory; the modification is known as the basic Bessemer process and is used in Europe. Bessemer steel usually contains between 0.010 and 0.020 per cent nitrogen and between 0.05 and 0.10 per cent phosphorus which influences the properties. Henry Bessemer,1 in 1856, recognized the possibility of using oxygen in the converter process, but the cost was prohibitive. This interest was associated with the theoretical balance of the Bessemer process. Experimental work' has indicated that bottom blowing with pure oxygen results in serious converter bottom and tuyere erosion. Dilution of the oxygen by steam has been observed to be an effective means of maintaining low-nitrogen content of the steel and at the same time reducing bottom and tuyere erosion. A further advantage is that the fume emission characteristic of Bessmer operation is reduced. The addition of steam to the oxygen, however, reduces scrap-melting capacity due to the endothermic reaction characteristics of steam. ECONOMIC deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden, Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definitely stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers.' Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer. It increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output. A liquid which is rich in oxygen (and silicon) develops at steel rolling temperatures in resulfurized and plain-carbon steels. This liquid fluxes solid manganese sulfide. The composition of the liquid and the resulting microstructures vary with the manganese/silicon/oxygen ratios in the steel. The observations and conclusions zuhich are presented are used 1) to suggest a mechanism for MnS deformation in resulfurized steels, and 2) to rationulize hot-shortness anomalies between plain-carbon and resulfurized steels. 1 HIS is a summary of the dependence of sulfide inclusion microstructures upon steel composition, and an interpretation of the behavior of sulfide inclusions at steel-rolling temperatures. Sulfide inclusions are known to have several metallurgical effects upon steel. Their effects upon hot-shortness are best appreciated. Although hot-shortness is well known, it is questionable whether its mechanism is fully understood because there are several anomalies in our interpretation. For example, why should not high sulfur contents produce extensive hot-shortness in free-machining steels ? A second metallurgical consequence of sulfide inclusions appears because sulfide inclusions improve machinability. Furthermore, globular inclu- sions are to be desired over elongated inclusions. To date, we know that lower silicon contents (< 0.010 pct) favor the globular sulfides, but we do not know why this interrelationship between silicon content and inclusion shape exists. Finally, the evidence is strong that the surface quality of a hot-rolled steel is particularly sensitive to the sulfur content. SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS WORK The role of sulfur in hot-shortness was first suggested during the past century. It is uncertain who was the first to conclude that sulfur was less deleterious in the presence of manganese, and that manganese altered the sulfide phase from a liquid FeS to a solid MnS at steel-rolling temperatures. However, Urban and chipman&apos; emphasized that liquid FeS may accumulate as an interdendritic film during solidification. More recently, Keh and Van lack&apos; showed that the intergranular liquid does not completely surround the metal grains at all rolling temperatures. THE fine lines shown in Fig 1 are typical of markings that may be detected after polishing and etching deformed specimens of alpha brass and other alloys. Although they have long been the subject of discussion by metallurgists their nature is still uncertain and the names that have been applied to them, such as deformation lines or strain markings, indicate this uncertainty. In this paper which reports the results of a further investigation of their nature, they will be called strain markings. INTRODUCTION Matthewson and Phillips1 in 1916 concluded that strain markings appeared only after deformations that exceeded 20 pct. They objected to the markings being called slip lines believing this term should be reserved for surface markings produced by plastic deformation. In 1921, Vogel2 described similar striations which appeared after polishing and etching the roughly ground surface of numerous alloys. He reported that the markings were crystallographic in nature, and since they resemble Neumann bands in iron, at least superficially, he assumed them to be mechanical twins. In 1928, Matthewson3 reported work by Phillips which indicated that the lines were more readily produced by impact than by slow deformation and that in many cases the twins inside recrystallized grains were parallel to strain markings in the original deformed grains. This was taken as evidence that the markings coalesce into annealing twins, and hence that they themselves are mechanical twins. Many attempts have been made to [ ] demonstrate directly that the markings are mechanical twins. In 1934, Samans4 described the results of X ray studies of two deformed crystals of alpha brass. Evidence was obtained which could be interpreted to indicate that the strain markings are mechanical twins, and this remains the only direct evidence to this effect. Several other attempts to obtain similar evidence by X ray diffraction have failed5,6,7 although in no case was the original method of Samans employed. An

THE refining period of an open-hearth heat blends imperceptibly into the finishing period, during which final adjustments are made in slag composition, in bath action and temperature, and in composition of the steel, in order to prepare it for casting into ingots. Operations must be governed by the consideration that alterations in the character of the heat during the finishing period must be held to a minimum. In a broad sense, the finishing and deoxidation period of a heat may be said to be- gin when the action of the last ore addition has ceased, and to end when the teeming of the ingots is completed. INGOT STRUCTLIRES A survey of the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of ingot structure is required because deoxidation treatments during the finishing period control the amount of gas evolved during solidification and consequently determine the type of ingot structure. Four classes of ingots are recognized, de- pending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the steel has been subjected. These types are killed, semikilled, capped, and rimmed; typical examples of their structures are represented by ingots 1, 2, 5, and 7, respectively, of Fig 9-1. The actual ingots from which these cross sections were sketched were all poured to the same height (indicated by the dotted lines) in the same type and size of bottle-top molds. The eight drawings of the figure represent selected types of ingot structure in a continuous series from "dead killed" to "wild," resulting from variations in the total quantity of gas evolved, from none at all to copious amounts, during solidification of the steel in the mold. Killed and semikilled steels are adjacent at the "quiescent" end of the ingot structure series where only small amounts of gas are evolved. Zinc-vapor pressures in equilibrium with bcc solutions of zinc and iron at 703.5", 757", 793", and 900°C were measured by an isopiestic method. Thermody-na?nic properties of zinc in these solutions were derived directly and those of iron with a Gibbs-Duhem integration. Zirzc and iron exhibit large, positive, and moderately temperature-sensitive deviations from ideality. Excess enthalpies and Gibbs energies are positive in the ranges studied. It has been establzshed in relating published phase equilibria to the Gibbs energies of forming solid solutions that positive departures from ideality also exist in the fcc solutions. Tlze stability, as defined by Darken, of the bcc solutions is small but positive at 703.5"C. Its decrease with decreasing temperature indicates that a miscibility gap may exist in the stable or metastable bcc solutions at lower temperatures. The changes of thertnodynanlic properties relatable to changes in magnetic state are minor compared to other changes due to alloying. The accuracy with which the relation between lattice parameter and composition of the bcc solutions is known has been improved. Zinc increases the lattice parameter of a iron by O.ZOZA per unit atom action zinc to at least NZn = 0.25. TO our knowledge, only Ciganl has previously investigated thermodynamic properties of the bcc solutions of the Fe-Zn system. He measured zinc-vapor pressures in the temperature range from about 320" to 360°C by an effusion technique. We have measured the vapor pressures of zinc in equilibrium with bcc solutions of zinc and iron at 703.5", 757", 793", and 900°C by an isopiestic technique. This investigation and the pursuant thermodynamic computations are part of a program for studying several properties of these solid solutions. In the appendix we report a remeasurement of the relation at room temperature between the lattice parameter and zinc content. Related work not reported herein embraces measuring the diffusivity2 of zinc in ferrite at 700" to 900°C and the Curie point temperature3 as functions of composition. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD AND APPARATUS Purified iron at a series of constant temperatures was saturated with zinc at a series of constant zinc-vapor pressures, the range of conditions being so limited that the equilibrated solid solutions were ferri-tic. The equilibration was conducted in long capsules, Fig. 1, that had been evacuated, gettered with titanium, and sealed. The purified iron, part of a vacuum-melted ingot of electrolytic-iron stock (Glidden Co. 1044-grade), had the impurity contents listed in Table I. It was used in the form of millings about 0.001 in. thick. A zinc of 99.999 pct purity (United Mineral and Chemical Corp.) and later one of 99.9999 pct purity (Cominco Products, Inc.) were used, with no observed difference in results. Sufficient zinc was placed in the capsule (separate from the iron and kept at a different temperature) to supply the vapor phase and the iron alloy, while leaving a pool of pure liquid zinc throughout the run. The imposed temperature of the residual zinc pool fixed the vapor pressure of zinc throughout the capsule; condensation was avoided at other locations by making this the lowest temperature in the capsule. Two common complications of nonisothermal systems were, we believe, effectively absent from ours: first, molecular species other than monatomic have no appreciable concentration in zinc vapor at 700" to 900~~: second, the development of zinc-pressure differentials in the capsules was suppressed by use of relatively large-diameter tubing and the absence of diluents in the zinc vapor other than desorbed impurities. The specimens and zinc pool were located at two isothermal zones (each ranging within 1°C over several inches) of a wire-wound, 37-in.-long vertical-tube furnace. The required temperature distribution was achieved by external adjustment of the currents in three electrically isolated windings. It was customary formerly to publish an index of the Transactions about every fifth volume, but since the Institute began in 1913 to publish three volumes instead of one volume per year, this has been deemed impracticable and unnecessary. No collective index has been published since the one covering Volumes I to XXXV inclusive, excepting a short one covering Volumes XXXVI to XL inclusive. The Board of Directors, therefore, upon the recommendation of the Committee on Papers and Publications, decided to publish this index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive, and thus enable members to have in condensed space the collective indexes of all the volumes of the Transactions.

You moderns think of your field of work as "Minerals Beneficiation"; to me it always will be "Ore Dressing." While I would like to talk with you on the future of ore dressing rather than the past, I cannot do this because I started to work in the field some 56 years ago, and my future is behind me. It is trite to remind you that then, in 1900, one out of every 30 high school graduates went on to higher education. Today, the figure is one in every three. So that, while you have a lot more men to compete with, the field of opportunity has expanded even more.

The use of operations research and computer techniques continued to expand during 1967. A number of mining companies either obtained computers or were experimenting with their use through service bureaus. This trend was also evident in the Canadian mining industry. Although the annual Symposium and Short Course on Computers and Operations Research in Mineral Industries was not held in 1967, technical periodicals like MINING ENGINEERING, Mining Congress Journal and Engineering and Mining Journal stepped up their coverage on the subject. The annual AIME meeting had eight papers in two sessions and one session on Operations Research was held at the SME Fall Meeting in Las Vegas.

The purpose of this paper is to present data that have been obtained during the past two years concerning the effects of prior cold-work and temperature and time of anneal upon the recrystallization and grain growth of 70-30 cartridge brass. It was desirable to study certain of these phases so that an accurate picture of the principles of the subject could be shown. The work is not intended to provide explicit annealing data, but to provide material examples that may help to clarify analogous problems concerning this alloy. Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,l W. R, Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where such conditions as amounts of metal, heating time and temperature may differ. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subscquent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.129-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. Time The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per , cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut M by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determina.tions. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor. A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed. At various

Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,1 W. R. Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where conditions are different and the amounts of metal require necessarily longer heating times and temperatures. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subsequent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.125-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. TIME The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut ½ by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determinations. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor, A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed.
