The separation of hematite by hysteretic repulsion was first brought to the attention of the public in 1922, by W. M. Mordeyl. Three years later another paper2 was published and after another four years a third paper3 appeared in the South African publications. Certain data were lacking in these papers. In order to continue the work intelligently a knowledge of the shapes of the hysteresis curves for certain minerals was very necessary. This information was not available until the present year4. It was known that reduction of certain ores rendered them amenable to this process of separation but definite data in the form of curves showing exactly the effect of such treatment were lacking. Probably our best source of information on the separation of minerals by the use of alternating-current magnetic fields today is the reports from the U. S. Bureau of Mines5"7. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the reader in detail how to make a commercial separator. Experimental models have recently been made? and the results obtained have been so good that it is the opinion of the authors that the public will soon take an active interest in the subject and its development. The writers have constructed a separator that is considerably different in construction and operation from the two types described by Mr. Davis. This will be described, but the real purpose of this paper is to outline certain experiments and give curves showing data that have a fundamental bearing upon the practical construction of a separator of this type. Specular hematite is usually considered nonmagnetic; that is, it is very feebly magnetic as compared to some other minerals. If specular hematite is placed in a steady magnetic field there is no apparent attraction. At the moment of closing the switch, however, some particles may be seen to move. The study of the flow of oil and gas mixtures through oil-bearing formations has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years, and has resulted in a series of research projects based upon various phases of the flow of heterogeneous fluids through porous media. Obviously, the low cost of producing oil during the flowing life of a well makes it desirable to obtain production by natural flow as long as possible and to effect a maximum recovery of oil and gas by the utilization of reservoir energy through efficient methods based upon a thorough knowledge of reservoir characteristics. Despite the extensive research that has been carried out, there is little information available on the behavior of oil and gas mixtures flowing through reservoir formations. This makes it impossible to predetermine the optimum operating conditions for flowing wells. A differential pressure must exist in the reservoir in order to induce flow toward the well. It is a well established fact that with homogeneous fluids the relation of pressure drop to linear distance traveled is a straight-line function as long as the flow is viscous. However, in regard to gas-saturated oils, a number of investigators1l,2,3 have reported that the flow characteristics are materially altered as some of the lighter hydrocarbons are liberated from the oil to form gas while the fluid passes through the reservoir. Most of the work done has been concerned primarily with steady-state flow of liquid-gas mixtures. Cloud1 has studied the effects of saturating crude petroleum oils with various gases, together with the resultant pressure gradients under steady flow conditions, noting that unsaturated oils flowed faster and yet maintained lower pressure gradients than saturated oils. The term. "high-yield-strength," used in the title of Dr. Gillett's paper (p. 40) is obviously relative. His discussion is limited to improved steels intended to compete with the low-cost, low-carbon, hot-rolled, sheet and plate steels of commerce made and used on a tonnage basis, without heat-treatment. In his list of about three dozen steels, only three have a yield strength of 70,000 lb. per sq. in., or over. Double such values are not uncommon in aircraft steels. Dr. Jeffries (p. 21) refers to "light-weight metals," obviously meaning strong alloys of low specific gravity; namely, aluminum alloys of the duralumin type and certain magnesium alloys. In a structural material, "lightness" is determined by two factors, strength and specific gravity. They must always be considered jointly. The basis of comparison is a strength-weight ratio, obtained by dividing the desired strength value, such as tensile strength, yield strength, or endurance limit, by weight per unit of volume, such as specific gravity or pounds per cubic inch1. For example, aluminum is a heavy metal, structurally, unless alloyed and heat-treated to give it high strength. When the strength of a structural metal is raised by heat-treatment or by cold-work, its specific gravity is not appreciably changed, but it is made lighter in direct proportion to the increase in strength because less of it will be required to carry the load. The lightness of the finished structure of adequate strength is the real point of interest. This structure must not only carry designed load, but "stand the gaff" of service, which includes the effects of accidental overload, fatigue, corrosion, loosening of joints, and so forth. Neither Dr. Gillett nor Dr. Jeffries mentions the true "lightest material of construction," which is alloy steel, tubular in form (Fig. 1), assembled by welding and heat-treated to a yield strength in excess of 150,000 lb. per sq. inch.

THE relative partial molar heats of solution in liquid tin have been determined for phosphorous, arsenic, and antimony at 750°K. This work was carried out as part of an over-all program to determine the heats of formation of the III-V semiconducting compounds. A differential twin-type liquid tin solution calorimeter was used in the investigation. All three elements are endothermic upon solution in tin. The relative partial molar heats of solution go through a minimum value at arsenic. No concentration dependence of the heat of solution was found in the dilute (0 to 2 at. pct solute) solution range investigated. The measured heat effects and the calculated relative partial molar heats of solution at infinite dilution are listed in Table I along with the relative heat contents of the solutes calculated from the data of kelley.1 All of the values are referred to 750°K even though the calorimeter temperature fluctuated by *1°K during the course of the experiments. In this range of temperature change no variations were found which were outside the experimental error. This would be expected since the partial molar heat of solution is in general a very insensitive function of temperature. The limits of error given in Table I represent the standard deviation from the mean. The reported error estimates only apply to the estimated precision of the data and not the accuracy. Systematic errors could be present which would affect the absolute values given. This is especially true in the case of phosphorous and arsenic where vaporization could occur. If this were true, the experimental values reported here would be too high and the true partial molar heat of solution would be less than that given in Table I. Moreover, the heat-content data could be in error and this would also affect the calculated values. THE property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, 147 km. (91.5 miles) eastward by rail from the port of Chanaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges. The mine is on the westerly slope of the outer, or western, range, at a mean elevation of 3250 m. (10,500 ft.). A meter-gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 151 km. (94.0 miles), of which 93 km. (57.79 miles) are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. The remainder of the road is owned by the state. The company operates its trains over the portion of the road owned by the state, under an agreement with the Chilean Government. The mine is connected with the reduction plant by a meter-gage railroad, 10 km. (6.214 miles) long, which extends from the coarse-ore bins at the metallurgical plant to the underground storage bins at the mine. Tunnels make up 60 per cent. of the total length of this railroad. As is characteristic of the Andean region in Chile, the topography of the locality is extremely rough, and a number of points near the mine have elevations of from 15,000 to 16,000 feet. History of Potrerillos Mine The ore occurrence has been known for many years, and many of the claims under individual ownership were worked in a small way before the property was acquired by the present owner—the Andes Copper Mining Company. The highest grade oxide ores near the surface were mined by primitive methods and, after sorting, the product, assaying around 15 per cent, copper, was hauled by mule carts a distance of about 80 km. This paper gives a short account of plastic deformation as observed in single crystals of zinc, zinc having been selected for the experiments described herein because the phenomena are comparatively so simple and can be studied throughout such a wide range. It is hoped that the paper will serve to show the type of information which studies of single crystals afford and will contribute toward the solution of the general problem of metallic behavior. PRODUCTION OF ZINC SINGLE CRYSTALS The method of Czochralski,1 as modified by vow Gomperz,l was used to produce the crystals studied. The equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Molten zinc is held in a crucible at a temperature which is not far above its melting point, as measured by a pyrometer. A lava disc floats on the melt, and is provided with a central hole about 1 min. in diameter. A glass tube, drawn into a capillary at the lower end, is suspended from a string which is wound up by an electric drive at the speed desired. At the start, the glass capillary is let down into the melt and the hoist is started. The capillary brings up a small quantity of molten metal with it to a point just above the lava disc. At this point, a jet of hydrogen cools it and causes it to crystallize, with the result that a -small crystal forms. As the hoisting is continued, more molten metal is drawn up, in turn to be solidified by the jet of hydrogen. This additional metal continues the growth of the crystal already formed, and a long, cylindrical crystal results. The speed of hoisting used was generally between 0.1 and 0.5 mm. per sec., and the crystals were from 4 to 6 in. long and about 1 mm. in diameter. By varying the conditions, crystals of quite different orientations were obtained and were used in the study of the phenomena to be described.

(communication to the Secretary*). -We must keep in mind, in balancing the savings-to be anticipated by the most efficient combustion of gas, the best heat absorption by stoves or boilers, and by heat conservation of the thermal equivalent carried in. blast-furnace gas-against the cost in operation, maintenance, depreciation and interest charges of the equipment required to realize the savings, that in boilers and hot-blast stoves we are basing our economies upon two different, combustion phenomena. In a boiler, evaporating water at a heat efficiency of 70 per cent., approximately 47,550 B.t.u. is consumed per boiler horsepower. Taking the blast, furnace gas cited in the above paper, we are using about 38 ¾ lb. of cold-washed gas per boiler horsepower. Using the hot-cleaned gas, the same equivalent heat is furnished by 34 1b. of the gas , This leaves of the 38 ¾ lb. required in the case of cold-washed gas, 4 ¾ lb. or 6,650 B.t.u. available for raising more steam when dry-hot gas is used, which means that an equivalent amount of coal firing can be dispensed with. Per ton of iron, this figure 2/3 X 12,000/38.75 X 4.75 = 980 lb. gas or 1,372,000 B.t.u. or 100 lb. coal. At $1.50 per ton of coal, the net saving per ton of pig iron produced by the use of dry-hot over wet-cold cleaning will, therefore, be about $0.06 2/3. At a stove heating 8,500 lb. of air per toil iron from 150° F., one-quarter of the dry-hot cleaned gas, or 3,000 lb., would heat the air to 1,450° F. 3,000 X 1,400 X 0.70 = (8,500 X 0.255) = 1,300. The cold-wet gas would heat the same amount of air to 1,280° F. 3,000 X 1,225 X 0.70 = (8,500 X.0.255) = 1,130.

It has been long known that the gas evolved during the boil in the open-hearth furnace is mainly carbon monoxide associated with smaller quantities of other gases. A number of attempts have been made to determine the precise effects of carbon and oxygen content of the bath, and of other factors, such as temperature, upon the evolution of carbon monoxide. In his investigation of the carbon-iron oxide product in liquid steel, Hertyl showed that the value of this product at equilibrium could be approximated by plotting the value of the product observed in open-hearth reactions against rate of carbon elimination, and extrapolating to zero rate. The results of this study showed a slight but definite effect of temperature upon the carbon-iron oxide reaction. Experimental studies of the evolution of gases from rimming-steel ingots have not yet attained the degree of precision necessary for an exact understanding of the effects of pouring temperature, carbon content, and iron oxide in the metal upon the composition of these gases. Klinger2 showed that the gas consists mainly of carbon monoxide, and that considerable variation in its composition occurs during the solidification of the ingot. In order that these variations may be understood in their proper relationship to the progress of solidification of the ingot and the segregation that accompanies solidification, it is essential to have a knowledge of the condition of equilibrium in the several chemical reactions by which the gases are being formed. It is also necessary to understand the effects of temperature upon the equilibria, and further, to know the manner in which the temperature of the liquid metal within the ingot changes as the skin of the ingot is being built up. 12.1 -1. Introduction. Problems concerning slopes in soils and rock generally arise in connection with road cuts and open pit mines. The angle at which a slope will safely stand is of major economic importance to both the road designer and the open pit operator. Stable slopes in soils and rock are evaluated through two fundamental approaches, namely, soil mechanics and rock mechanics. The approach selected to make this evaluation depends upon the material in the slope. For the purposes of this chapter, only slopes totally in soil or totally in rock are considered. By definition, soils are unconsolidated accumulations of solid materials produced by mechanical and chemical disintegration of rocks or the accumulation of sediments (28); rock is defined as the hard, compact, natural materials composing the crust of the earth (10). The basic factors affecting slopes in soil or rock are similar, although rock strengths are orders of magnitude greater than soil strengths. In general, the strength of large masses of soil depends upon the texture of the soil, the particle size, cohesion, and resistance to tensile and shear stress; the strength of large masses of rock depends upon the strength of the rock and the defects, such as faults, fractures or joints, that intersect the rock. Further, some of the defects in rock are cemented or uncemented, and may be filled with materials that are strong or weak compared to the rock. In slopes of either soils or rock, the stability is presumed to be a function of the slope height, slope angle, the size of the excavation, and the stresses imposed on the soil or rock by tectonic and/or gravity forces, earthquakes, or other static or dynamic forces. In addition, both soil and rock slopes are affected by static and dynamic water pressures in the pores of soils or permeable rocks or in the defects in the rock behind the slope. Visual observations of slope failures also indicate that both soil and rock can deteriorate with time, and this deterioration may be caused primarily by weathering (27).

THE milling practice at Mascot, at present, consists of dry crushing to 5/8 in., jigging, fine grinding, and flotation. The ore arrives at the mill from two mines, No. 1 mine shaft being located in the mill proper, and No. 2 mine shaft being situated about 2000 ft. east of the mill. No. 2 mine is served by a coarse-crushing plant and aerial tramway to the mill bins. In jigging the No. 2 mine ore, 50 per cent. of the mill feed is rejected by the jigs as a jig tailing ranging from 5/8 in. to 10 mesh; the balance of this ore, after removing a jig concentrate, is ground to flotation feed. In jigging No. 1 mine ore, approximately 80 per. cent. of the mill feed is rejected as a coarse jig tailing, and the balance is ground to flotation feed without the removal of a jig concentrate. The difference in the treatment is due to the fact that No. 2 mine ore carries a higher content of zinc than that from No. 1 mine. Of the total concentrates produced, 30 per cent. are made on jigs and 70 per cent. by flotation. At present, 1350 tons of No. 2 ore and 800 tons of No. 1 ore are treated each 24 hours. The recoveries for a typical week are as follows: Heads 3.55 Jig concentrates 61.30 Jig tails 0.80 Flotation concentrates 60.60 Flotation tails 0.09 Extraction 86.50 The associated minerals are a straw-colored sphalerite, dolomite, calcite, pyrite, quartz, and a small amount of greenockite, which occurs as a stain and sometimes small crystals along with sphalerite, but is comparatively rare. Pyrite is present in small quantities, usually less than 0.5 per cent.; quartz occurs in bands a few inches thick. A complete analysis of the ore is as follows:

THE two chemical compounds, natural sodium carbonate and sodium sulphate, in their anhydrous condition are dealt in as "soda ash and "salt cake”-names from an earlier day that are not as precise as the present accepted terminology. Once a large part of the sodium carbonate recovered was in the ash of seaweed, so it was logically called soda ash, and the corresponding potassium carbonate, once mainly recovered from wood ashes, was called potash. The term "salt cake" was applied to the sodium sulphate resulting from interaction of sodium chloride with sulphuric acid or sodium bisulphate, to form hydrogen chloride gas and an anhydrous cake of sodium sulphate. It was called "salt cake" and also "glassmaker's salt cake" because much of it was used in the production of glass. The two salts occur in nature in a variety of forms, but whereas an- hydrous sodium sulphate (thenardite) is fairly common, the anhydrous normal sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, is almost never found in nature. The monohydrate (thermonatrite), Na2CO3.2H2O, is seen occasionally, but it is never a major constituent in natural "soda" deposits. The high solubility of normal sodium carbonate is one reason for this. While both compounds occur widely in brines, the solid salts found in nature are usually trona (Na2CO3.NaHC03.2H2O) and thenardite (Na2SO4). The natural brines containing workable quantities of the two sodium salts are largely found in the arid and semiarid portions of the western United States and other countries. The classical discussion of the resources of these brines are those of Clarke,5 Chatard.4 Packard,19 Gale,11 and Wells.28 From North Dakota to California and from Arizona to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, saline lakes, dried-up lakes, playas, and similar land-locked depressions contain accumulations of saline matter. Since 1925, when the preferred orientations in compressed aluminum were first determined1,2 the orientations have been described as a fiber texture in which a face diagonal, [110], of the face-centered cubic lattice is parallel to the compression axis. Subsequent experiments have seemed to confirm this texture,3-5 and a number of theories (recently summarized in references 6 and 7) have been proposed to explain it and to relate it to the behavior of single crystals during compression.3,8-11 The experiments reported in this paper prove that the orientations are not adequately described as quoted above—i.e., as a [110] fiber texture—although this is a first approximation to the actual texture. They also show that the texture cannot be thought of as a stable orientati011 that is reached and maintained after a sufficient amount of deformation. The actual texture, when studied in detail at successive stages of compression, indicates that a hitherto unsuspected range of orientations is present, both in the polycrystalline metal as a whole and in various individual grains in its interior, and that a state of dynamic equilibrium exists within this range. The reasons for the failure of previous theories to predict the actual texture become obvious when the heterogeneous nature of the flow is considered. In addition to the deformation texture, the manner of its development, and its theory, this paper presents data on the following related subjects: the identity of strain markings in aluminum; the orientation changes in aluminum single crystals during compression and a comparison of these with the conditions in individual grains of a polycrystalliile specimen; the origin of asterism ill deformed single crystals, which heretofore has been regarded as a distortion localized at the surfaces or slip planes; and the relation of plastic strain in individual grains ill all aggregate to the strain of the whole.

REGARDING the results of preferential flotation at Cananea, Weinig has stated that "The concentrating mill of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company at Cananea, Mexico, furnishes an excellent example of modern flotation practice. The complete figures are given because they present so forcibly the advantages of modern selective flotation."' L. O. Howard notes that "Perhaps the outstanding example so far published of improvements in results through the use of selective flotation is that at Cananea, Mexico." The following notes indicate the conditions under which the results were obtained at Cananea; also the effect of preferential flotation at the concentrator and at the smelter. In the majority of cases the full benefit of selective flotation is not fully realized, as the concentrates are shipped from the mill to smelters owned by other companies. The saving made at a certain concentrator by this method of flotation may be well understood but the saving resulting at the smelter from the results of preferential flotation at the mill is not so apparent, as the data are contained in the smelting records of some other company. Even at the smelter the great gains following preferential flotation may not be noted, as a variety of ores and concentrates from various sources are received and the difference from the changed concentrator operations of a certain mill may be obscured. As noted by Professor Weinig and Professor Howard, the results obtained at Cananea brought about a veritable metallurgical revolution at the smelter. There are probably plants at which a better preferential separation is being made than at Cananea. Many ores contain barren iron pyrite which, when depressed, does not carry copper into the tailing. Some concentrators use clean uncontaminated water for milling and in others the ore is ground much finer than at Cananea. All of these items are concerned in perfect separation. The picturesque little mining town of Grass Valley, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at an altitude of 2500 feet, has been for 43 years the scene of uninterrupted activity and prosperity, as the center of a mining district which was intimately associated with the pioneer days of California, and the discovery of gold by James W. Marshall, in El Dorado county, in January, 1848. Although placer-mining was inaugurated in Nevada county as early as 1848, the first quartz ledge was not located until the summer of 1850. Discoveries made on Gold Hill and Massachusetts Hill increased the excitement in quartz-mining, and hastened the erection (during the same year) of the first mill operated in the State. At the close of 1864, the district had produced $23,000,000 in gold, and all the well-known properties of to-day had been discovered and worked. The Eureka-Idaho, the North Star, and the Empire mines were in active operation ; and to-day we still find them equipped with large crushing-plants, operating 80 per cent. of all the stamps in the immediate Grass Valley district. Of the mines just named, the North Star possesses the most recently constructed mill, a description of which, the writer believes, may prove of interest to members of the Institute engaged in the milling of goldores. During the year 1386, operations at the North Star mine (the property of the North Star Mining Company) had reached such a stage of development that the necessity of a crushing-plant at the mine became imperative, and early in October the erection of a 30stamp mill was in progress. The building designed to contain 40 stamps was speedily erected ; and within sixty days the large structure was under cover. From time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion' of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt, a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. IN recent years, especially in the last decade, great interest has been shown and many advances have been made in the preparation and clean-ing of coal. In the major coal-producing countries, the percentage of tonnage cleaned has been increasing ever since 1924. As separating media, both liquids and gases are used, these generally being water and air respectively. Some systems, instead of obtaining separation by the velocity of the medium in which the coal is cleaned, depend on the density of water mixed with sand, or coal dust and shale, or with chemicals such as calcium chloride. In studying the results of coal-cleaning equipment, it will be observed that the efficiency of the cleaning apparatus lowers as the size of the coal decreases. This inability to obtain any marked improvement in the fines has been partly responsible for the installation of dedusting equipment, to remove the fine sizes from the raw coal prior to cleaning. When considering the possibility of installing dedusting equipment, many factors must be taken into account. Very often, but not always, both the ash and sulfur content of the coal increase as the coal size decreases. When bituminous coal, containing soft powdery fusain, is subjected to a wet washing process, the porous fines of the fusain remain in the small coal or in the wash water and delay the dewatering of the washed coal and increase the difficulty of clarification in settling tanks or thickeners. When a dedusted coal is cleaned by a wet process, the sludge recovered from the settling tank often runs so high in ash that the sludge can be discarded without further treatment and still the loss is small. Where treatment of the sludge is desired, however, froth flotation may be used to advantage if the size of the feed is below 1/10 in. Dust from the deduster can be treated in a similar manner. Fusain, which is usually found in the fine sizes, has often a much larger ash content than other coal.

From time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion' of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt, a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. Regarding the results of preferential flotation at Cananea, Weinig has stated that "The concentrating mill of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Company at Cananea, Mexico, furnishes an excellent example of modern flotation practice. The complete figures are given because they present so forcibly the advantages of modern selective flotation."l L. 0. Howard notes that "Perhaps the outstanding example so far published of improverrients in results through the use of selective flotation is that at Cananea, Mexico."" The following notes indicate the conditions under which the results were obtained at Cananea; also the effect of preferential flotation at the concentrator and at the smelter. In the majority of cases the full benefit of selective flotation is not fully realized, as the concentrates are shipped from the mill to smelters owned by other companies. The saving made at a certain concentrator by this method of flotation may be well understood but the saving resulting at the smelter from the results of preferential flotation at the mill is not so apparent, as the data are contained in the smelting records of some other company. Even at the smelter the great gains following preferential flotation may not be noted, as a variety of ores and concentrates from various sources are received and the difference from the changed concentrator operations of a certain mill may be obscured. As noted by Professor Weinig and Professor Howard, the results obtained at Cananea brought about a veritable metallurgical revolution at the smelter. There are probably plants at which a better preferential separation is being made than at Cananea. Many ores contain barren iron pyrite which, when depressed, does not carry copper into the tailing. Some concentrators use clean uncontaminated water for milling and in others the ore is ground much finer than at Cananea. All of these items are concerned in perfect separation.
