INTRODUCTION Fifteen years ago a distinguished electrochemist referred to electrochemistry as an "underdeveloped science " In the article in question, Professor Bockris (1) stated that many areas of.natura1 phenomena and applied technology are not perceived as being electrochemically based At that time, this was especially true for much of non-ferrous extractive metallurgy and was a particularly accurate description of hydrometallurgy During the last decade, there has been considerable advancement in applying the theory of electrochemistry to our know1 edge of hydrometallurgical processes and in understanding the mechanisms of underlying electrode reactions. Impressive as these advances are, there is still a growing need for electrochemical research of mineral systems and electrochemical engineering to apply this work in practical situations In a broad sense electrochemistry is defined as the physical chemistry of ions in solution and of phenomena which occur at the electrified interface. Bockris and Reddy (2) refer to electrochemistry as being divided into two fundamental domains, ionics and electrodics ionics is restricted to the behavior of ions in solutions, examples being many familiar redox processes Electrodics represents the main part of electrochemistry, and is the study of charged interfaces and the conditions governing charge transfer reactions across them. Considering hydrometallurgical applications, electrodics suggests the following relationship for a conducting solid (bulk or surface)

The preferred crystallographic orientations developed during recrystallization of polycrystalline electrolytic iron sheet, cold-rolled 90 pct, were ivestigated. Recrystallization at 500° or 565° C for relatively short limes produces a texture which is similar to the rolling texture. A duplex partial fiber texture, significantly different from the rolling texture, is found when the annealing time is increased. Recrystallization at 700°C also produces a sequence of textures with increasing annealing time. In order of their appearance, these textures are: 1) the duplex partial fiber texture found at lower temperatures, 2) a four-component texture "near {322}(296)", 3) a {112)(110) +(111)(110) texture, and 4) a two-component "near {554)(225)" texture. Secondary recrystallization, or discontinuous grain growth, accompanies the development of the latter texture. However, the "near {554} (225)" texture was nol observed when secondary recrystallization occurred under other conditions. All of the ideal orientations found in recrystallization textures can be accounted for by the growth of minor components of the deformation texture. IN recent years there has been increased interest in improving the drawability of metals by controlling the preferred crystallographic orientation of the sheet.1-l3 Since more low-carbon steel is drawn than any other material, considerable attention has been focused on the properties of sheet steel. Efforts to improve drawability through texture control have been hampered by the lack of any published systematic study of the recrystallization textures developed in iron annealed below Acl. The purpose of the present work was to supply some of this missing information, specifically, the recrystallization textures obtained by isothermal anneals of polycrystalline iron, cold-rolled 90 pct. LITERATURE REVIEW—DEFORMATION TEXTURES Barrett14 reviewed and summarized the investigations of rolling textures in iron and low-carbon steel prior to 1952. The texture of heavily deformed iron (rolled 90 pct or more) is described as consisting of two partial fiber textures. The dominant fiber texture (designated here as fiber texture A) has a (110) fiber axis in the rolling direction and includes the orientations (001)[110], {112}( 110), and {111}(110). The secondary texture (designated here as fiber texture B) is described as having a (111) fiber axis in the sheet normal direction, and includes the orientations {111)( 110) and (111)(112). Since the publication of Barrett's book, there have been two detailed studies of the deformation texture in polycrystalline iron. In both instances, the more sensitive diffractometer methods of pole-figure determination were used. Bennewitz15 studied the cold-rolling textures developed in polycrystalline low-carbon steel and a 3 pct Si steel. He determined (110), (2OO), and (222) pole figures for specimens reduced 30, 50, 60, and 90 pct and analyzed his results in terms of partial fiber textures. He distinguished three stages in the development of the final deformation texture. 1) Grains rotate to form two incomplete fiber textures, with (110) fiber axes inclined 30 deg to the sheet normal toward the rolling direction (fiber texture B). After 50 pct reduction, the highest density of poles is near an ideal orientation {554}(225), the two components of which are members of this duplex fiber texture. 2) With increasing amounts of reduction, grains rotate about the former fiber axes toward ideal orientations of the type {112)( 110) (common to fiber textures A and B). 3) Finally, grains rotate about their ( 110) axis in the rolling direction, clockwise and counterclockwise from the orientations {112}(110). This produces the range of orientations from (111)(110) to (001)(110) commonly found in the rolling texture of heavily deformed iron (fiber texture A). No significant difference was found between the deformation textures of low-carbon and silicon steels. A few years earlier, Haessner and weik16 had determined (110) pole figures for carbonyl iron rolled to 30, 60, 80, and 90 pct reduction in thickness. heir data agree quite well with the more complete data of Bennewitz, but a somewhat different description of the evolution of the deformation texture was given. The appearance of (110) poles in the transverse direction is ascribed to a (100)[011] component rather than "near {554}( 225) " components, and the (110) fiber axes of fiber texture B are described as located 35 deg rather than 30 deg from the sheet normal. Both of these studies agree that the secondary texture present in heavily rolled iron, the duplex fiber texture B, has (110) fiber axes and not a single ( 111) fiber axis normal to the sheet, as

The kinetics of the cyclic oxidation and reduction processes for palladium powder were examined in the temperature range 848 to 923 K. The changes in oxidation behavior due to cycling are shown to result from the decrease in surface area. Sintering is found to occur only during the reduction process. Oxidation kinetics were found to follow a cubic law with time and yield a relation for the oxidation rate constant of k x = (1.05) 106 exp P74.0). 103 / RT] The kinetics of reduction are demonstrated to be first-order with the rate constant described by the expression: kr = (7.69) 1012 exp [-(208.0) 103 / RT] . In both expressions R is in J.mo1-1.K-1.

PROPERTY AND LOCATION THE Alaska Gastineau Mining Co.'s mine is located at Perseverance, about 4 mi. east of Juneau, Alaska. Its property consists of a group of claims, the lode system traversing these claims for a distance of 11,000 ft. (3352 in.). It is shown in Fig. 1. This gold belt can be traced for about 50 mi. northwest of Juneau and 40 mi. southeast. It consists of a single band, several hundred feet wide, in which stringers and veins of quartz, carrying gold, occur in a slate formation near its contact with some altered volcanic rock known as greenstone.

IT is found when floating oxidized lead ores by sulphidization, that the presence of calcium salts in the water, is usually detrimental and lowers the recovery. This effect is particularly marked in dry countries such as North Africa, where the waters often carry large amounts of calcium sulphate and where the ore may even contain gypsum. The effect of calcium salts is readily visible. Whereas in their absence cerussite is quickly stained brown and then black by sodium sulphide, in their presence the mineral remains very light in color. A similar effect is produced when barium sulphide is used as a sulphidizing agent instead of sodium sulphide. Magnesium salts have little or no effect and even tend to reduce the detrimental effect of calcium salts. A study of this phenomenon indicates that it is due to the precipitation of calcium or barium carbonate in contact with the mineral simultaneously with the formation of lead sulphide. The chemical reactions can be interpreted as: PbCO3 + Na2S = PbS + Na2CO3 CaSO4 + Na2CO3 = CaCO3 + Na2 SO4 They might also be written: PbCO3 + S = + Ca++ = PbS + CaCO3 The precipitation of calcium carbonate can be followed by the lowering of the pH with which it is accompanied. Magnesium carbonate is more soluble than calcium carbonate and usually does not precipitate under the conditions prevailing. It is interesting to note that calcium salts have no effect on anglesite (lead sulphate) because calcium sulphate is soluble, but barium salts hinder the sulphidization of anglesite because of the precipitation of barium sulphate. Remedies When calcium sulphate is present in large amounts, the softening of the water with soda ash is usually too expensive to be considered, but the precipitation of the objectionable calcium carbonate can be prevented in two different ways. One is the use of sodium hydrosulphide instead of sodium sulphide. This salt gives a lower pH than sodium sulphide and does not bring about the immediate precipitation of the calcium which remains in solution as calcium bicarbonate. The other procedure is to add ammonium salts such as the sulphate or chloride which have the property of increasing markedly the solubility of calcium carbonate. Ammonium salts have other effects such as cutting down conditioning time and accelerating flotation. They should be added to the flotation cells rather than to the ball mills. Table I. One final word of caution—when the ore is rich in primary slime, which is flocculated by the calcium salts, it may be indispensable to remove these by washing or precipitation with sodium carbonate instead of keeping them in solution by the above methods. There are many methods of analysis available for compounds similar to those used in solvent extraction processes. However, the majority of these methods are not directly applicable to the determination of solvent extraction reagents, especially in raffinates. The number which are applicable is further reduced if limited to the more simple methods suitable for process control purposes. Commercial extractants are complex mixtures. The complexity is increased by the addition of diluents and modifiers in two-phase systems containing metals. Raffinates from solvent extraction processes contain the more polar components of the extractants and the products of decomposition. Only a limited amount of information is provided by total organic carbon or spectrophotometric analysis. The complexities of the systems require a combination of methods.

Objective stockpile goals have been met for antimony, bismuth, fluorspar, and iridium, while those for bauxite, cadmium, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, mercury, platinum, tin, and vanadium have not, according to a report by the Munitions Board. Total materials under inventory and contract represent about 78 pct of entire stockpile goals, the report stated. Frobisher, Ltd., of Canada has been given permission to survey power possibilities in certain lake and river basins in the Yukon believed to have a potential of 5 million he. Canadian Resources Minister, Robert Winters, also announced that his Government has rejected a bid by Aluminum Co. of America concerning use of Canadian waters to power a proposed Alaska aluminum project. Alcoa is reported hopeful of resuming negotiations.

J. S. Unger,* Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion?).-I heartily agree with the author's suggestion, near the close of the paper, that greater uniformity in the making and use of brick is desirable. The effect of the manner of laying the brick, the mortar or cement used, the necessity of standardizing the shapes, the elimination of irregular or poorly designed brick, and the necessity for uniform operating conditions were pointed out by me some years ago. Many factors influence the quality of firebricks. The following figures obtained from bricks during their making or after completion show the need for greater uniformity in their quality. These results were obtained from regular commercial bricks, shipped to the consumer. In many cases the samples were from the same car load.

PLANS for development of the San Manuel ore- body have been worked out and are progressing parallel with construction of the surface plant. This property lies in the Old Hat mining district, Pinal County, Ariz., about a mile south of Tiger where the St. Anthony mine once produced gold, molybdenum, vanadidn, lead, and zinc. Two development shafts have been completed and serve as ingress for preparation of the 1475 haulage level and 1415 grizzly level. Three other shafts are being put down. The Nos. 3A and 3B shafts will provide the ore hoisting facilities. The No. 4 shaft, now being sunk, will be at the main mine service and supply yard, with primary function to provide the mine with supplies.

Measurement has been made of the organic sulfur concentration in coal macerals using microanalytical techniques in the transmission electron microscope. This technique utilizes measurements of x-rays emitted by the sulfur atoms embedded in the hydrocarbon constituents and the bremsstrahlung x-rays generated in the matrix. It is a simple technique for thin specimens and yields reliable results. Although it can be used to measure the average organic sulfur content of coal, it is most useful in determining organic sulfur in extremely small volumes of material. Variations in organic sulfur content can be measured at a scale unimagined earlier. This TEM technique also has application for determination of organic chlorine, phosphorous, potassium and other elements often found distributed through the hydrocarbon constituent of fuels.

The extraction of gold and silver from ores with alkaline cyanide solutions is well known. Cyanide solutions are also good solvents for many base metal minerals, particularly most of the copper minerals. Leaver and Woolf, who determined the solubilities of copper minerals in 0.10 pct sodium cyanide solution, showed that malachite, cuprite, chalcocite, and bornite are readily soluble in cyanide; least soluble are chalcopyrite and chrysocolla. The Mining Chemicals Laboratory of American Cyanamid Co. has studied the possibilities of using cyanide solutions for leaching base metals. In this article the authors present the results of their experiments with cyanide leaching to reduce the copper content of a zinc concentrate from 0.050 pct to the desired specification of less than 0.02 pct.

WHETHER the valuable components in a mineral deposit can be mined and separated from the worthless matrix, processed, and marketed depends not only upon the natural factors and the physical and chemical techniques, but also upon many extrinsic factors relevant to the economics of the business of exploring, developing, and producing minerals. To meet a need for proper coverage of this specialized field of economics, the Mineral Economics Div. of the AIME has developed a plan for assembling a volume setting forth important factors affecting mineral enterprises other than those that lend themselves to solution through science or technology. The program has been considered by the Institute's Directors and they have approved it, subject to a decision of the Mineral Economics Div. to carry it out.*

THE blast furnace of the Columbia Steel Corpn., at Ironton; Utah, was put in blast April 30, 1924, and its operation has presented some interesting problems. The coke for the furnace is furnished by 33 Koppers Becker type ovens of 15 tons capacity each. The coal is shipped from the company's mine at Columbia, Utah, which is approximately 123 miles from Ironton, and is probably the highest volatile coal that is being coked for blast furnace use in this country. Despite the many industrial uses, the world market for silver as a commodity is far from free, being dominated by the U.S. Government both through acts of Congress and by policy of the Treasury Department. This discussion will consider aspects of supply, demand, and price with a view to the future. Changes in Sources of Supply: The world's peak production of silver, 278 million oz, was in 1937. In the 1850's world production was about 30 million oz, having risen from a yearly average of 11 million oz for the first half of the century. From 1860 to 1940 there was a steady rise, broken only by World War I and the depression of the early 1930's.

At the Troy meeting of the Institute, in October, 1883, I presented a paper entitled "Smelting Notes from Chihuahua, Mexico,"" in which was briefly described a cupellation-hearth, commonly met with in the northern part of Mexico, called in the vernacular un vaso. Since writing the paper I have had occasion to construct a hearth of this description for myself, using it, in conjunction with a waterjacket, for the reduction of a very refractory ore in the form of concentrates ; and I now avail myself of this opportunity to qualify some of the statements made in the paper referred to. In this research the possibility of pelletizing high grade fluorsoar fines or flotation concentrates with the use of calcined colemanite as binder is investigated, and the room temperature and elevated temperature strengths of these pellets are compared with those of pellets which are obtained by using bentonite as binder. Pellets of 10-12 mm. size and having 10% calcined colemanite showed a much higher room temperature strength than those containing 5% benonite, both being endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes. However, when the same batch of pellets were tested at elevated temperatures of 250º to 500°C, bentonite gave better results. X-ray tests showed that in the pellets endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes the original crystal structure of fluorite mineral is preserved.

The ultimate goal in rock mechanics is to make quantitative predictions of the response of rock to changes. Measured and calculated values of changes in displacements or temperatures in the rock for six different field experiments are compared using linear regression. When values of the mean compressive stresses are large compared with the values of the deviatorial stresses, linear elasticity, using values for Young's modulus from laboratory tests, provides a good predictive model. However, if the values of the mean compressive stresses are small compared with those of the deviatorial stresses the behavior and response of the rock, though systematic, is not linear. Linear heat conduction provides good predictions of changes in rock temperatures but thermal displacements are not predicted well by linear thermoelasticity.
