PRACTICAL experience has shown that at elevated temperatures solu-tions containing sodium hydroxide may attack stressed steel in a manner that cannot be explained in terms of ordinary corrosion. Because the ductility of the metal has been greatly reduced during the reaction, the entire phenomenon is usually called "embrittlement." Thus, after several years of operation caustic evaporators have been so badly embrittled that rivets could be cracked off with the blow of a hammer. Since fine intergranular cracks are almost always present in the zone of fracture, it has often been assumed that a process of selective corrosion in grain boundaries was responsible for the failure, although this has not been clearly proved experimentally. Concentrations of sodium hydroxide below those necessary for the uniform, rapid attack of the steel surface are reported to be most effective in producing embrittlement2,3. In the operation of steam boilers a similar type of failure has been found, mainly in riveted seams or other capillary spaces where the solu-tion may concentrate and where high stresses may also exist. It is believed that in such localized areas the dissolved solids may reach a value many times the few hundred parts per million prevalent in the body of the boiler. In practically all rock-excavation problems there is need for a careful study of the rock structure, its fault, cleavage or bedding planes, and even the texture of the rock itself. These studies should form the bases upon which an excavation method is selected and they should be carefully considered in predicting the amount and extent of the excavation. The need for such studies was forcibly illustrated in the problems involved in a cut made in 1929, along and underneath a 200-ft. high rock projection for a State-highway near the City of Easton, Pennsylvania. The rock mass was badly faulted and also contained a number of cleavage planes at approximately right angles to the fault planes. Much of this structure was visible and could have been studied and analyzed before' the work was begun. The State had rigid specifications as to finished grade and slope of cut, which apparently were made without reference to the geologic structure. The contractor complied with the specifications, under the close inspection of the State engineers. A tunnel blast was, placed in the base of the cliff, with the result that 65 per cent more rock was broken than was intended by the specifications. About four years after the blast, the writers of this paper studied the circumstances surrounding the operation, to determine the cause of this excess excavation.

TUBE stills having demonstrated their usefulness for refining operations, the later developments in their design have been in the direction of improved thermal efficiency: The earlier designs operated with low furnace temperatures and large volumes of furnace gas because the fuel was burned with much excess air. It was quite possible to provide sufficient heating surface to lower the temperature of the flue gas to within 150° of the temperature of the inlet oil, or when inlet-oil temperatures were high to have the flue gas escape at 300° or 350° F. by using the heat remaining in the flue gas from the still to preheat the air supplied for combustion. But even so, the thermal efficiency was low because of the large quantity of air used for combustion. The large quantity of excess air was required to burn the fuel in the furnace at a temperature low enough to prevent overheating the furnace walls and overheating of the oil. Supplying heat to the tubes of the heating surface at a rate beyond the capabilities of the oil to absorb, except with a considerable difference between the temperature of the inside of the tube and oil passing through, would result in overheating the tubes and the oil in contact with them. For these reasons it was very necessary in the older types of tube stills to burn the fuel with large quantities of excess air, resulting in low thermal efficiency despite the low flue-gas temperature. Neglecting loss by radiation, the thermal efficiency could be improved only by burning the fuel with less excess air, but it was necessary to accomplish this without upsetting the furnace temperature conditions existing when large quantities of excess air were used. There are several methods of bringing this about, such as controlling the furnace temperature by returning a proportion of the flue gas to the furnace, or by exposing direct to the fire a heat-absorbing surface so located and proportioned that sufficient heat will be absorbed by radiation to prevent excessive furnace temperatures.

SECONDARY fertilizer minerals include borax, gypsum and sulphur and such compounds as the sulphates of copper, magnesium, manganese and zinc; also the carbonate and oxide of magnesium. Potash, phosphates and nitrogen are generally considered to be primary fertilizer materials. The growing plant, under the average conditions of growth, is able to get from the soil the mineral elements required for the completion of its life cycle. The elements taken up are numerous and the vital functions of some of them yet remain to be determined. However, in the commercial growing of the plant (farming) something much more than the mere completion of a life cycle is required. There the maxi- mum possible growth of plant or yield of seed or fruit are the objective and for that objective the average soil is deficient in some elements, and additions from artificial sources are desirable. Commercial fertilizers (15,000,000 tons in 1946) are designed to supply those deficiencies. Long experience has taught that nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the elements most apt to be required and in a greater degree, and to supply them is the-basic function of the fertilizer industry. Thus nitrogen, phosphate, and potash are designated as the major plant-food materials. But other mineral crop nutrients may likewise be deficient in varying degrees as determined by diagnostic techniques, soil tests, plant analysis and foliar symptoms,3 calling for their addition from artificial sources if maximum crop yields are to be obtained. Because used in lesser amounts and frequently in relatively minute amounts as compared with the major three, they are designated either as "minor elements," or, if used in larger amounts, as "secondary elements." Thus, included under the two designations, in alphabetical order, are: borax; copper sulphate; magnesium carbonate, oxide and sulphate; manganese sulphate, and zinc sulphate. Obviously, the sulphates of the metals copper, manganese, and zinc cannot be considered as "industrial rocks," but they are given brief mention for whatever interest may pertain there to.

Machine loading of coal into mine cars is increasing rapidly. Particular reasons for its use frequently apply to certain localities, but in general, it is profitable to install mechanical coal-loading equipment: (I) when existing hand-loading contract rates prevent further cost reduction; (2) when the height of the coal bed requires that either top or bottom must be taken to place cars in rooms; (3) when labor shortage or limited house-plant capacity prevents the production of desired tonnage ; (4) when tonnage requirements are in excess of possible hand-loaded production from developed areas; (5) when working places are scattered and it is possible to concentrate production, and therefore supervision, by the installation of mechanical equipment; (6) when rapid development is essential. Having decided to install loading equipment, the problem then arises as to what type is best adapted for a particular mine or coal bed, the choice lying between mobile track equipment, pit-car loaders, scrapers, shaker conveyors, belt conveyors and drag conveyors. MajoR FactoRs Influencing Choice of Equipment In determining the type of equipment to be used, the following major factors must be studied: Grades.—Adverse grades, while permitting other types of loading equipment to work successfully, may prevent the success of a shaker conveyor installation. Thickness of Bed.—The thickness of coal governs the choice of equipment. A machine that requires 5 ft. of head room should not be selected for a 3-ft. bed where otherwise it would be unnecessary either to brush top or to lift bottom. Nature of Pavement.—Soft or scaly bottoms are unsuitable for the use of any type of digging loader, shaker conveyors or scraper loaders. nigging loaders and scraper loaders scale the bottom, mixing it with the coal and causing preparation difficulties; shaker-conveyor drives frequently work themselves loose, destroying the conveyor alignment and creating maintenance problems. The continuing search for faster, safer, and more economical methods of excavating underground openings has led the staff of the Mather mine of the Negaunee Mine Co. directly to mechanical boring of raises and drifts. The mine is located within the city limits of Negaunee and Ishperning in the eastern portion of the Marquette Iron Range in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is owned jointly by McLouth Steel Corp., Bethlehem Steel Corp., Republic Steel Corp., and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., who also serves as the operating agent. A total of 2,400,000 tons of iron ore averaging over 60% Fe is mined annually by the block-caving method. This provides feed for the Pioneer pellet plant at Eagle Mills where 1,450,000 tons of pellets are produced yearly with the remaining tonnage being sold as coarse ore. Technical staff of Cleveland-Cliffs have long realized that improved methods of advancing raises and drifts were a necessity if underground mining of iron ore was to survive the transition period in the steel industry's requirements from direct-shipping ore to pelletized ores. For this reason, the Mather mine embarked upon an experimental raise-boring program with a prototype machine in 1961. Improvements since that time in equipment and practice have resulted in the acceptance of mechanical boring of raises as a standard development tool and a vital link in the fulfillment of an orderly development schedule. Advancement of large-diameter openings such as main-level drift headings by mechanical methods in the harder, more competent types of rock has developed more slowly in the mining industry due to the need for more compact and portable machinery and improved bit technology. Many of the obstacles have been overcome by the manufacturers, and in March 1967 it was decided to proceed with a program to bore approximately 4000 ft of 13-ft-diam drift in the Mather graywacke footwall rock.

If an electric field is applied to a conducting liquid solution, changes in concentration usually occur because of differences in ionic mobilities. A variety of ways of utilizing this effect in conjunction with the freezing process are discussed in principle. For example, if a column of binary eutectic liquid is maintained a few degrees above the melting point and a field is applied, the component solid solutions will crystallize at opposite ends of the column until the liquid is consumed. An expression for the effective distribution coefficient, k, is derived for the case of a direct current Passing through a solid-liquid interface. It is shown that k can be varied It is well known that solute distributions in crystalline substances can be controlled by careful freezing from melt or solution. It is also well known that an electric field can produce substantial changes of concentration in liquid solutions by virtue of differences over a wide range, including values outside the usual range between ko (the equilibrium value) and unity. Hence, for many systems: the efficiency of zone refining can be increased; a ko of unity can be made greater or less than unity; solutes that lower or raise the fretzing point can be concentrated at the same end of the ingot by zone refining; be made equal to unity; and the tendency toward constitutional supercooling can be reduced. The methods of field-freezing are applicable to a wide range of materials including metals, semiconductors, and ionic conductors. in ionic mobility. In this paper we discuss, in principle, some methods that combine these techniques in useful way's. The methods are designated by the general term, field-freezing. Topics discussed include separation of the components of a eutectic, crystal growth, and controlling the value of the effective distribution coefficient. The methods are applicable to a broad range of materials, including alloys, semiconductors, fused salts, and other liquid electrolytes.

For many years hydrocyclones, commonly referred to as cyclones, have been extensively utilized in the classification of particles in comminution circuits. The practical range of classification for cyclones is 40 microns to 400 microns, with some remote applications as fine as 5 microns or as coarse as 1000 microns. Cyclones are used in both primary and secondary grinding circuits as well as regrind circuits. The information given in this chapter is intended to provide a method, at least for estimating purposes, of selecting the proper number and size of cyclones and to determine the proper level of operating variables. Generally, it is recommended that cyclone suppliers be consulted for sizing confirmation. Sow cyclone suppliers employ digital computers to aid in the sizing and selection of cyclones. CYCLONE DESCRIPTION AND BASIC OPERATION Figure 1 shows a cutaway view of a typical cyclone. During operation, the feed slurry enters the cyclone under pressure through the feed pipe into the top of the cylindrical feed chamber. This tangential entrance is accomplished by two types of design, as shown in Figure 2. Since the majority of research has been done with the involuted type, the graphs and relationships shown may not be strictly applicable to other designs. As the feed enters the chamber, a rotation of the slurry inside of the cyclone begins, causing centrifugal forces to accelerate the movement of the particles towards the outer wall. The particles migrate downward in a spiral pattern through the cylindrical section and into the conical section. At this point the smaller mass particles migrate toward the center and spiral upward and out through the vortex finder, discharging through the overflow pipe. This product, which contains the finer particles and the majority of the water, is termed the overflow and should be discharged at or near atmospheric pressure. The higher mss particles remain in a downward spiral path along the walls of the conical section and gradually exit through the apex orifice. This product is termed the underflow and also should be discharged at or near atmospheric pressure.

GOLD occurs in many mineral deposits in the rocks of the Canadian Shield. It is present in the ores of many base metals and a considerable quantity is recovered as a by-product from the production of copper at Noranda, of nickel and copper at Sudbury and of copper and zinc at. Flinflon. But the greater part of the gold production of Canada is from deposits in which gold is the only metal of value. No gold is obtained from placer deposits within the borders of the Canadian Shield. A brief review of the geological relations of some of the gold deposits of the Canadian Shield will be presented in an attempt to explain certain associations. Only those which are being worked for their gold content will be considered and descriptions will be conned to representative types of deposits, chiefly those of major importance; a few others, differ-ing in certain features from those of the older and larger mines, will be included in order to illustrate the general conditions in which gold occurs in these ancient rocks. Brief summaries will be given of the geological relations of the Beattie and Siscoe mines of northern Quebec, of the mines of the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake areas of northeastern Ontario and of the Howey, Central Patricia and Little Long Lac mines of northwest-ern Ontario. Genetic relations to igneous rocks of granitic composition, outcropping in the vicinity, have been assumed for many of these deposits. Undoubt-edly the ore minerals have been derived from igneous sources and, for some occurrences, there is evidence suggestive of genetic relationship between the ore bodies and neighbouring intrusive rocks. During the past few years, however,, many investigators have expressed doubt of the genetic relationship of certain ore bodies to igneous masses near which they occur. As will be seen from references in the following descriptions the importance of the structural conditions in localizing deposition has been realized. RegaRding the elements necessarily involved .in working out a scientific scheme of classification, Stansfield and Sutherland, (94)† quoting Grout, (34) make the following statement: All bases (for a scientific classification) should be capable of quantitative determination, or be exactly related to some property capable of such a test, so that, if no natural groups are found, arbitrary lines may be drawn to limit the classes. The best basis for classification should involve inherent and fundamental qualities of the materials considered. Allied to this is the requirement that advantage should be taken of any natural grouping. As a further help in selection, the bases or tests should be easily applied, widely known, and have a wide range of values in the material classified. In order that we may apply the philosophy thus expressed, it is necessary for us to have clearly in mind both the reasons why coals differ and the specific purposes to be served by the classification to be devised. Coals differ because, as modern science has shown, coal beds are actually neither more nor less than buried and altered peat deposits, formed in remote geologic time. And as is generally known, such peat beds consisted of masses of partly macerated and decayed trees, shrubs, plants, mosses and/or algae, deposited under swamp or semiswamp conditions. It is therefore to be expected that coals will vary: 1. Because of differences in the parent vegetation, due either to evolutionary plant changes, as from the fernlike types of the Paleozoic to the coniferous and hardwood types of the late Mesozoic and Tertiary; or due to the differences in floral assemblages (growing at the same time) induced by differences in local environmental conditions. For example, moss, sedge, woody and other peats are today accumulating simultaneously in different bogs in North America. 2. In the study of reactions occurring in liquid iron, alone or in contact with a liquid oxide or slag phase, it has been found that the experimental data over a limited range of concentration can in some cases be represented satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression where (P) denotes the concentration of a product and (R) the concentration of a reactant in the reaction r1R1 + r2R2 + • • • D P lP1 + P 2P2 + • • • Some of the reactions for which it holds are listed in Table 1. For others, however, the simple equation apparently does not hold. This has been attributed to an improper method of expressing concentration (for instance, weight per cent instead of mol fraction); or it has been supposed that the solutions are not ideal in the sense that the activity of a component is not proportional to its true mol fraction. But it may be that the problem has been oversimplified by neglecting some molecular species actually present; that is, by considering only the ostensible simple components and thus leaving out of account possible compound formation. It is the purpose of the present paper to point out how, in a group of related cases, a reasonable consistent assumption relative to the presence of a compound makes it possible to express the experimental data satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression when this compound is taken into account, and to bring into harmony data referring to different reactions in liquid iron. There are several a priori reasons for believing that solutions in liquid iron should not deviate far from ideality, provided that the concentration of solute is not too great and is expressed in proper terms. The factors that commonly lead to nonideality in systems at ordinary temperature— as ionization or the occurrence of polar and nonpolar molecules—are presumably less effective in inetal and in slag systems at high temperature. Common salt is mentioned in the most ancient writings as an important article of diet. It is fairly certain that it was used by men and animals long before the dawn of civilization. Its presence in natural springs has often been the determining factor in colonization; wars have been fought for possession of salt deposits; trade routes have been established expressly for the purpose of traffic in salt. Naturally this led men into adventures and discoveries that altered history and advanced civilization. In the early days the uses for salt were few and the methods of manufacture were crude and the purity low when compared to salt of the present day. Then the salt came largely from springs, shallow wells or the ocean, while today deep wells must be drilled to the natural brines or beds of rock salt and spacious shafts sunk so that the ancient deposits may be made to yield their supply of stored mineral. Mining and Purification The quantity of available salt seems inexhaustible. It occurs in practically every country of the globe. About 20 million tons is produced and consumed annually in the world. Of this amount about 7 million tons is produced in the United States; 13/4 million tons of rock salt, 2 1/4 million tons as evaporated salt and 31/2 million tons in brine used in the chemical industry. Mined rock salt is used in its natural state without purification. It is classified for the trade by crushing and screening. The average purity of rock salt mined in the United States is about 98.3 per cent pure sodium chloride1. The usual impurities are gypsiferous shale, anhydrite and silica, with traces of potassium, magnesium and calcium compounds. Refined or evaporated salt is made by crystallizing the salt from brine in open pans or vacuum pans. A comparatively small amount of salt is made from ocean water or the brines of inland lakes or seas, sometimes by solar evaporation. By far the larger amount of brine is obtained by drill-

A short discission is given of the cryotron us a supercozductitzg- switch. The parameters of interest such as gaiz, critical gate current, critical control current, and critical surface current density ave described. The photomask-photoresist process makes possible the study of much narrower dimensioned cryotrons than previously possible using mask stencils. Data is given for the above parameters as a function of width, thickness, temperuture, and crossing ratio. Photographs of the various circuits used are shown. The techniques involved in making connection to the circuits and the precautions taken to avoid side effects in the measurements are discussed. In particular data is given for critical currents of sipercotzducting. lines down to 2X 104 in. A vise in critical surface current density is obserced jor the strallev lines in both lead and tin. A discussion of the ihact of these measurements in the design of future cryotron circuitry is given. In addition to the improvement in device density achieved by simple scale reduction. additonal gains in density may result through improved device form factor. THE cryotron is a superconducting current switch, invented by D. A. Buck.' Fig. 1 shows a typical crossed-film cryotron. Usually the gate is made of tin and the control is made of lead. The critical gate current, is the current that drives the gate resistive with zero current flowing in the control. The critical control current, I is defined as the current in the control necessary to switch the gate resistive with a small monitoring current in the gate. The gain of the device, G, is defined as Since for uniform thin films G should be proportional to the gate width divided by the control width, it is convenient to define the critical surface current density, Jcg, to be the critical gate current divided by the gate wldth. The data which follows will show that, for a given control width, I, is relatively constant. Thus, by measuring Jcg the change in gain as a function of gate width may be measured without measuring I,.

But it may be that the problem has been oversimplified by neglecting some molecular species actually present; that is, by considering only the ostensible simple components and thus leaving out of account possible compound formation. It is the purpose of the present paper to point out how, in a group of related cases, a reasonable consistent assumption relative to the presence of a compound makes it possible to express the experimental data satisfactorily by the simple equilibrium expression when this compound is taken into account, and to bring into harmony data referring to different reactions in liquid iron. There are several a priori reasons for believing that solutions in liquid iron should not deviate far from ideality, provided that the concentration of solute is not too great and is expressed in proper terms. The factors that commonly lead to nonideality in systems at ordinary temperature— as ionization or the occurrence of polar and nonpolar molecules—are presumably less effective in inetal and in slag systems at high temperature. Common salt is mentioned in the most ancient writings as an important article of diet. It is fairly certain that it was used by men and animals long before the dawn of civilization. Its presence in natural springs has often been the determining factor in colonization; wars have been fought for possession of salt deposits; trade routes have been established expressly for the purpose of traffic in salt. Naturally this led men into adventures and discoveries that altered history and advanced civilization. In the early days the uses for salt were few and the methods of manufacture were crude and the purity low when compared to salt of the present day. Then the salt came largely from springs, shallow wells or the ocean, while today deep wells must be drilled to the natural brines or beds of rock salt and spacious shafts sunk so that the ancient deposits may be made to yield their supply of stored mineral. Mining and Purification The quantity of available salt seems inexhaustible. It occurs in practically every country of the globe. About 20 million tons is produced and consumed annually in the world. Of this amount about 7 million tons is produced in the United States; 13/4 million tons of rock salt, 2 1/4 million tons as evaporated salt and 31/2 million tons in brine used in the chemical industry. Mined rock salt is used in its natural state without purification. It is classified for the trade by crushing and screening. The average purity of rock salt mined in the United States is about 98.3 per cent pure sodium chloride1. The usual impurities are gypsiferous shale, anhydrite and silica, with traces of potassium, magnesium and calcium compounds. Refined or evaporated salt is made by crystallizing the salt from brine in open pans or vacuum pans. A comparatively small amount of salt is made from ocean water or the brines of inland lakes or seas, sometimes by solar evaporation. By far the larger amount of brine is obtained by drill-

This paper covers a brief discussion of pumping 38° to 41° gravity oil from Wilcox sand wells ranging in depths from 4000 to 4900 ft. in the Seminole field, Oklahoma. As recently as a year ago it was the general belief among Seminole operators that most wells in that district could not be successfully or economically pumped. Also the idea was prevalent at that time that the crookedness of the rotary holes would cause a large amount of mechanical trouble and the use of the air-gas lift would leave the wells depleted with sand conditions and fluid levels unfavorable for pumping. At that time it was predicted that wells would be abandoned when the economic flowing and swabbing period was reached. Contrary to these beliefs it has been demonstrated that wells can be profitably pumped to limits as low as 10 bbl. of oil per day where conditions are favorable. The Serllinole field, unusual in its rapid development, has served as an experimental laboratory for many oil field pumping devices with which this paper will not concern itself. Discussion will be confined to equipment and methods in general use throughout the field. The outstanding features of equipment and pumping operations covered in this paper may be summarized as follows: 1. Pumping equipment from the standpoint of prime movers, energy cost, power transmission equipment, derricks, counterbalances, beam hangers, tubing, sucker rods, pumps, etc. 2. Pumping problems peculiar to the Seminole field, including the proper time at which to change from air-gas lift flowing to pumping. Pumping Equipment There have been no basic changes in pumping equipment in the past 20 years with the exception of some refinements in design brought about by the demand for equipment suitable for pumping deep wells. There are several exceptions from the practical operating viewpoint that might be taken with the paper. The author recommends using a "curve" in plotting safety factors of ropes and suggests that the U. S. Bureau of Mines change its present "step curve" method to the "curve" method. From an engineering theoretical point of view that is possible, but from a practical standpoint it is not possible. Rope manufacturers fabricate their ropes in diameter gradients of 1/16 in. to 1/4 in. which automatically sets up a step pattern gradient. If ropes were manufactured in the diameter gradients of 1/1000 of an inch or thereabouts, the curve method could be used. Also, from a practical standpoint, if an operator is to hoist from a depth of 4000 ft, for example, he will determine the size of the rope necessary for that depth, and it is only natural that he will have safety factor to spare at lesser depths, and in plotting this excess capacity the natural end result is a curve. The U. S. Bureau of Mines tables are set up so that the operator will know what size rope at the required safety factor he will need at his maximum depth. He is not concerned with lesser depths. W. A. Boyer (author's reply)-Mr. Grant states, "Rope manufacturers fabricate their ropes in diameter gradients of 1/16" to 1/4" which automatically sets up a step pattern gradient." There is no connection or relationship between the "size" pattern gradient and the present "factor of safety" step pattern gradient. The inherent factor of safety values for any particular size of rope with a given connected load when plotted for various depths is a curve, and with modern rope material and construction the inherent factor of safety curve is quite far removed from the present recommended factor of safety step curve. This is shown quite clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 of my paper.
