The laboratory test work compares various 6 x 16 mesh activated coconut carbons using a gold standard solution of 4 ppm dissolved in sodium cyanide. The carbon adsorption rate and maximum loading are measured for different feed solution ionic contaminates: silver, copper, thiocyanate, and ferrocyanide. Conclusions are drawn that among the activated coconut carbons tested, maximum loading and the effects of specific ions varied significantly. The work presented can be applied to 6 x 16 mesh carbon selection tests and specific ion monitoring for industrial carbon adsorption systems.

In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from circulars to authors, compiled by Mr. Frank A. Herald when he was Vice Chairman for Production of the Petroleurn Division: Generally in Table 1 the unit for presentation of data is a field. For our purposes a field is defined as the whole of a surface area wherein productive, locations are continuous. Such unit commonly includes and surrounds nonproductive areas. Such unit commonly includes a great variety of geologic conditions-—several units of continuous productive reservoirs of distinctly different structure and of distinctly different stratigraphy. Therefore it is hoped that our authors will subdivide "field" so as to enable students to make analyses that may have scientific and/or commercial value. As to each space in the tabulation, it is either (1) not applicable, (2) the proper entry is not determinable, (3) the proper entry is determinable, but not determinable from data available to the author, (4) the proper entry is determinable by the author. In spaces not applicable, the author will please draw horizontal lines; in spaces where the proper entries are not determinable, the author will please insert 2; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, the author will please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are deter-minable by the author he will, of course, make such entries. Generally, y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces, the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entries need not be hedged to such extent as in cases where the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use 2. For example, if the total production of a field is known to be between 1,800,000 and 1,850,000, the author may report 1,8xx,xxx; or if the production is between 1,850,000 and 1,900,000, the author may report 1,9xx,xxx. Where a numeral is immediately to the left of x or y, such numeral represents the nearest known number in that position. As to quantity of gas produced from many fields the question will arise as to whether the figures should include merely the gas marketed or should include also estimates of gas used in operations and gas wasted. Although rough approximations may be involved, our figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir.

ONSIDERABLE controversy has centered about the existence of an order-disorder transformation in alloys in the composition vicinity of 75 atomic pct Ni and 25 atomic pct Cr. All the evidence to date for such a transformation is of a rather indirect nature, since direct X-ray confirmation is difficult to obtain as a result of the small difference in X-ray scattering factors between nickel and chromium. As a result, superlattice lines would be very faint if present. Several investigators1-5 have observed anomalies in the electrical resistivity vs temperature curves of alloys in the vicinity of 25 atomic pct Cr. The observed change is characterized by a rather broad resistivity peak at about 540°C. A discontinuous drop in resistivity is normally associated with ordering. However, Taylor and Hin-ton4 have rationalized that the discrepancy could conceivably be caused by changes in the Brillouin zones upon ordering. The same investigators measured the specific heat as a function of temperature and have also observed anomalies in the vicinity of 540°C. Nordheim and Grant5 have proposed, because of the absence of superlattice lines and the absence of a discontinuity in the resistivity vs temperature curve, that long-range order is improbable and that the results could be better explained by short-range ordering. To date, however, the question has not been resolved satisfactorily. Neutron diffraction techniques provide a method for partially resolving the question since nickel and chromium have considerably different atomic scattering factors in the case of neutrons and, therefore, superlattice peaks, if ordering occurs, should be readily discernable. The results of a neutron diffraction investigation* coupled with a dilatometric in- vestigation are reported here. An alloy containing 28.0 atomic pct Cr was prepared from carbonyl nickel and electrolytic chromium in the form of a 1-in. diam x 10-in. ingot. Melting was done in an alumina crucible and casting in a graphite mold. The ingot was homogenized at 1250°C for seven days, after which a 5-in. long piece was cut into shavings in order to obtain a suitable neutron diffraction sample. Hardness samples and samples suitable for dilatometric analysis (% in. diam x 2 in.) were prepared from the remainlng piece. The neutron diffraction sample, along with a hardness sample, was annealed at 501°C for seven days, at which time the temperature was lowered to 479°C and held at this temperature for twenty-four more days. The hardness was observed to increase from 133 to 147 Vhn during the course of the annealing treatment, in qualitative agreement with Nordheim and Grant." Neutron diffraction traces taken at room temperature and at 42 °K are shown in Fig. 1. The insert shows the trace taken at room temperature with short counting times and thus only fair statistical accuracy. No evidence for superstructure reflections of Cu3Au-type ordering is observed. The statistical accuracy of the 4.2°K trace was improved by using longer counting periods. The many factors that control bumping must be carefully studied for each coal seam where bumps occur, and specifications known to exclude bumping should be incorporated in the mining plans. This calls for complete knowledge of the seam's characteristics and its adjacent strata, and in many instances these characteristics are not revealed until the seam is actually mined. Pressure and shock bumps, the two general types, occur jointly and separately. In this discussion no differentiation will be made. Whether pressure or shock, they are treated as bumps, and both must be eliminated.

For the first time in four years the number of mineral engineering students in the 228 engineering colleges of the U. S. and Canada exceeds 10,000. According to figures just released by the American Society for Engineering Education, the current enrollment of all engineering students is 222,178. The total of 10,274 mineral engineering students, undergraduate and graduate, is a 4% pct increase over a year ago. Total engineering is 11 pct larger than last year, about the same as in 1949-50, and 24 pct above 1950-51.

Data for mining applications of geophysical activity in the Free World in 1963 has been collected by the Committee for Geophysical Activity of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. This information has been made available to the AIME and is published here in abstract form with the kind permission of the SEG. The data is based or1 244 responses (51%) to the questionnaires circulated among 475 worldwide organizations engaged in mining geophysical operations and or research. It is believed that the data is a realistic appraisal of actual world geophysical activity.

This report covers most of the counties in North Central Texas in which oil is being produced in commercial quantities. The exceptions are McCulloch and Runnels, which were omitted because the production is small and the detailed information necessary for a report is not available to the writer. Complete information was not available regarding the number of wells drilled in this district during the year. The writer wishes to thank Mr. T. F. Petty, of the Humble Oil and Refining Co., Wichita Falls, Texas, for information used in compiling Table 2.

Cobalt recovery from arsenical concentrates by pressure leaching and reduction involves special methods and operating problems. Principal steps in the process are auto-oxidation acid leaching under pressure, filtration of the tailings, purification of the solution, hydrogen reduction of the ammoniacal solution, and electrical furnacing for sulfur removal and granulating the metal. Extracting cobalt metal from arsenical ores has presented a major metallurgical problem for many years. In acquiring the Blackbird mine near Salmon City, Idaho in 1943 Calera Mining Co. accepted the challenge to solve this problem.

FOR the past 20 years electrical earth resistivity exploration has been used in Illinois in many phases of study undertaken by the State Geological Survey, chiefly in locating and outlining deposits of water-bearing sand and gravel from which to obtain ground water for municipal and industrial supplies. At least 43 municipalities in the state derive their total water supply from deposits of sand and gravel discovered by resistivity methods. These deposits occur in both Quaternary and preglacial valleys and within much of the glacial drift which covers .a large portion of the state

A prediction is made of the airflow at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory with a ventilation computer program that accounts for fan-driven forced ventilation and temperature-induced natural ventilation. There was substantial agreement between measured and predicted airflow rates. The capability of the program is demonstrated as a planning aid for ventilation under emergency conditions in a multilevel coal mine. Smoke spread in a multilevel mine is analyzed following the occurrence of two events, the failure of the main exhaust fan and the development of a fuel-rich fire in a passageway.

An empirical model is developed that predicts accurately the transient response of salt creep to incremental and decremental changes in stress and temperature. Even though the model is empirical, it is derived from a firm theoretical framework for the micromechanical deformation processes of both steady-state and transient creep. In the model, the transient creep functions modify the steady-state creep behavior, which in turn is based upon creep mechanisms and the def ormation-mechanism map. The model is applied successfully to experimental stress-drop results obtained for salt.

California’s Monterey Peninsula, noted for its beaches, resort hotels, and beautiful homes, also harbors a pioneering beneficiation operation. Here for more than 35 years the Del Monte Properties Co. has provided sand products from large dunes, some over 300 ft high, located in the Del Monte Forest. Raw material-the dunes derived by wave action from Santa Lucia granite of Jurassic age-has unusually consistent chemical and physical composition. Coarse crystalline feldspar is the principal constituent, followed in abundance by quartz, with some biotite, ilmenite, garnet, zircon, and monazite.

ASARCO's copper smelter at Hayden, Arizona has been upgraded to meet the increasing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) environmental standards. Fortunately, means were found to accomplish these standards and provide for more efficient operations. With the adaptation of oxygen flash smelting and other related operations at Hayden, ASARCO has turned to the use of minicomputers and microprocessors for inter-plant communications and local area process control. The applications of distributive and computer controls to the plant operations at the Hayden smelter are discussed in this paper.

Shortages of cinders, largely resulting from industrial plants converting to fuel-oil, together with an enhanced building activity, have seriously affected the cinder block and lightweight concrete manufacturers. In the search for other sources of lightweight aggregate, various clays, shales, slates and natural occurring lightweight rocks such as pumice, scoria, volcanic ash and the like have received special attention. Methods and equipment for producing suitable lightweight aggregates have been considered. In addition to an expanded use of the rotary kiln, the traveling-grate and continuous-sintering machines are being installed in many localities.

STRUCTURAL steels containing chromium have become widely used in the last 20 years. In the earlier part of this period the major applications were in chromium-molybdenum aircraft tubing and similar special high-strength steels. During the past 10 years there has been a notable expansion in the use of chromium-bearing steel for structural purposes when welding was utilized for fabrication. The chromium-bearing steels introduced by Saklatwalla1 (chromium-copper), Kinzel2 (chromium-manganese-silicon), and Schultz3 (chromium-copper) are being extensively used at the present time.

The continuous increase in energy costs has made it necessary to consider a broader use of belt conveyors for the transportation of material from the mine pit to the processing plant. Hard rock has to be crushed before it can be moved by belt conveyors. Systems are in the planning stage for mining hard rock, such as copper and iron ore, by using high-capacity, mobile, or semi-portable crushers. The mobile crusher is located in the pit, and the crushed material is transported by energy-efficient, shiftable belt conveyors out of the pit.
