IN a previous publication from this laboratory1 the conclusion was drawn that the embrittling effect of occluded hydrogen on iron and steel must result from the precipitation of the gas within small openings through the crystal structure. A review of the literature then published indicated the real existence of crystal sub- structures of the mosaic type and gave presumptive evidence that the "rift openings" associated with hydrogen occlusion are the same as the "disjunctions" of the mosaic theory. Inasmuch as no clear conception of the actual nature of the crystal fragments and openings inherent in these theories has been established, it was considered desirable to obtain direct micrographic evidence of their true configuration. In this direction the standard methods of metallographic attack have proved useless. Recourse was had, therefore, to the direct examination of the surfaces upon which failure by cleavage had resulted from the presence of hydrogen. It was expected that such a surface, un- affected by chemical attack and undistorted by polishing, would reveal the fine openings penetrated by the gas and thus indicate the real nature of the substructures. MATERIALS STUDIED In commercial steels, defects caused by hydrogen take various external forms ac- cording to such factors as structure and purity, and to the extent to which hydrogen either occludes or produces chemical changes. The present work relates only to the well-known transcrystalline hydrogen embrittlement-"pickling brittleness"-in which elemental hydrogen occluded within the grain develops cleavage characteristics. For example, hydrogen embrittlement resulting from hydrogen reaction products is excluded from detailed study. It was also desirable, as far as possible, to have the study uncomplicated by other elements which themselves cause brittleness. Three types of iron were used. These included ingot iron, decarburized free- machining steel, and a specially prepared, aluminum-killed, electrolytic iron. This , choice allowed a comprehensive selection of unavoidable minor impurities and inclusions, which could subsequently be shown to have no specific effects on the structures within the grains. Carbon, and any other impurities free to react with hydrogen, were first removed by a preliminary annealing treatment in hydrogen. Subsequent treatment in vacuo extracted much of this hydrogen and its gaseous reaction products. The resultant ductile iron was then embrittled either by a second anneal in hydrogen, followed by rapid cooling, or by cathodic electrolysis. Group I: Prepared from Armco Ingot Iron As shown in Table I, the principal impurity in this iron was oxygen, which survived the purifying treatment to a large extent. Two series were prepared. In solution-mining of underground salt and similar minerals, using drilled wells for access, it is desirable to monitor the lateral growth pattern of the resulting fluid-filled cavern. Therefore, a process of seismic surveying from the surface of the ground has been conceived in which the amplitudes of waves reflected from and transmitted through the soluble formation are measured. The large acoustic impedance contrast between solid and fluid should produce striking amplitude anomalies, especially if shear waves are employed, since thick fluid bodies are opaque to shear waves. Horizontally-polarized (SH) shear waves are best for preventing conversion to P waves at the numerous horizontal interfaces in the ground. Field tests to date have shown that a truck-mounted, half-ton hammer striking horizontally against the end of a trench produces usable SH-wave energy at lateral distances up to about 850 ft. Horizontally-directed explosive wave sources were effective to about 2000 ft. Conventional magnetic-tape recording and processing were used, but with the detecting geophones oriented to favor SH waves. An irregular solution cavity in bedded salt at 500-ft depth has apparently been located by SH-wave and SV-wave reflections. Further field work is planned to corroborate and extend this result. The Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, is supporting this work. Major deposits of salt in tabular beds lie beneath some 300,000 sq miles of land in the central and northeastern U.S. This salt is a basic source of soda ash and chlorine, and has been extracted as brine from drilled wells for about a century. During the past two decades, the U.S. solution-mining industry, following the lead of European operators, has greatly improved the extraction process through the application of engineering and science.' In 1957, the Brine Cavity Research Group, an association of 11 chemical and salt producing companies, was formed. This group proceeded to attack certain common problems through the support of research. An outstanding problem has been that of determining the shape and location of the growing solution cavities in the underground salt, so that measures can be taken to maintain operating efficiency. The problem has been partially solved by the Dowel1 sonar mapping service, which employs a pulse-echo device lowered into the cavity through the well.2 However, the working range of this equipment is at present insufficient for large cavities, and echoes are not returned from highly sloping walls nor from behind such obstructions as rock debris. Therefore, an independent means of mapping the cavity, for example, from the surface without interfering with operation of the well, would be desirable. THEORY OF THE METHOD Seismic waves are the only physical agent known to be capable of sufficient resolution and penetration to define typical solution cavities from the surface of the ground. The geometry is unfavorable: cavity widths are generally less than half their depths below the surface; resolution and lateral location of boundaries and channels to within 50 ft at depths of 500 to 3000 ft is desirable. Conventional seismic surveying, as used for petroleum prospecting, is probably not the answer: isopach mapping, for example, is not thought accurate enough to define the cavity by the slight additional delay time it would introduce (of the order of 0.005 sec for a 50 ft-thick cavity in hard Paleozoic rocks). Refraction surveying has also been considered, but seismic specialists see little promise in it for this problem. In 1957, in correspondence with industry personnel, the writer suggested a seismic method based upon careful measurement of reflection amplitudes. As Table I illustrates, seismic reflection coefficients r for typical brine-rock interfaces are considerably higher than those for typical interfaces between different kinds of solid rock. This fact can be utilized in two ways, illustrated in Fig. 1: 1) If the cavity roof is reasonably flat (which it may sometimes be since the unsaturated top brine will be in contact with an insoluble rock stratum), extra-strong seismic reflections will be received from the salt stratum where the solid has been replaced by liquid.

Nitric acid oxidation rate analyses of three coals, previously studied microscopically by the Bureau of Mines, revealed three components. Relative quantities agree with those found for the four components given by the Bureau and results are consistent with current ideas of coal constitution. Fox some years past the annual reviews of the metallurgy of lead have almost uniformly stated that there have been no great changes, such as there were, being more particularly noticeable in the refinement of details. While this is quite true, nevertheless these changes in details are gradually bringing about a condition that, taken as a whole, constitutes a considerable advance in the art. Local circumstances have often -compelled metallurgists to adopt certain peculiarities of practice which -upon trial have been found advantageously applicable to more than the restricted district f origin. This paper will deal ' with some of the more novel features developed in recent years at the United States smelter, Midvale, Utah, particularly with reference to the influence of the bag house. The plant is equipped with six blast furnaces, 48 by 160 in., mechanically fed; four Wedge furnaces for roasting matte and sulphide ores; four Dwight-Lloyd sintering machines; 20 converter boxes for blast roasting; storage bins for ore, fuel, and fluxes; "oxide" and "sulphide" sampling mills; bag house taking all the gases of the plant; arsenic plant for treating the dust gathered there; laboratory, shops, etc. The most marked feature of the plant is its complete bag-house system. Of the many schemes thus far tried for preventing damage to surrounding agricultural interests the writer is aware of none as yet quite as efficient as the bag house. A common remark of visitors upon approaching the plant and viewing the clear stacks is that it appears to be shut down, whereas once inside all the evidences of industry are found.

IN studying the kinetics of slag-metal reactions, it has become increasingly apparent that a complete knowledge of all aspects of interface phenomena will be required to clarify these processes adequately. A part of the data required for all oxidizing slags used in the refining of impure iron to steel is the rate of exchange of iron between the slag and metal phases. The simplest equilibrium of this type is that between liquid iron and iron silicate slag when both phases are equilibrated with the silica crucible containing them. In this study, the exchange of iron between the two liquid phases has been measured by using radioactive Fe as tracer. The observed high exchange rate indicates the ease with which such interfaces may be crossed in refining processes. The experiments required for this study involved relatively minor and normal modifications of well established techniques. Melting was accomplished by induction heating in heavy walled, fused silica, rotating crucibles." Rotation was used to minimize dilution of the slag by crucible erosion. The melting stock was ingot iron. Slags were prefused in iron crucibles using chemically pure grade oxide reagents. The special conditions applying to the active iron additions will be described for individual experiments. Suitable precautions were observed with regard to protection against radiation hazards.' Identification of Activity This particular study was initiated several years ago, but held in abeyance because the radioactive iron available at that time contained a foreign activity which concentrated in the slag so as to mask the iron activity and render the results unin-terpretable. With the benefit of experiences from other studies, radioiron of suitable purity can now be prepared. As received from the Isotope Div. of A.E.C., the unit appears to contain Fe + Fe50 and a high activity cobalt. The cobalt and iron are separated by repeated ether extractions, and the purified iron stored for sufficient time for the Fe'7 44 day half-life) to decay to negligible activity, leaving only Fe as the active isotope. This was confirmed by the absorption curves for slag and metal samples from heat No. 1. In Fig. 1 the experimentally measured points for the absorption curves of slag and metal are fitted by the calculated slope of 5.8 mg per sq cm in aluminum, which corresponds to the Mn K doublet emission resulting from the capture of an orbital electron of Fe" by the nucleus. This shows that the radioactive species are the same in both slag and metal and identifies it as Fe55 Description of Individual Heats For the first heat, the radioactive iron was contained in the prefused slag. The active Fe55 had been precipitated with carrier and was added as Fe2O3 during fusion in the iron crucible. The charge of 500 grams of ingot iron was melted, the protective iron sleeve added, rotation started, and a prefused, inactive slag was added to allow the system to approach equilibrium. After about 5 min at temperature, the wash slag was skimmed and the active slag added. Initial slag and metal samples were taken as soon as the slag was molten. Additional samples were taken at indicated intervals thereafter. Slag samples were dipped with a small iron spoon and metal samples were sucked into 1/4 in. ID silica tubes. The slag and metal samples were pulverized and mounted for radioactive counting. The slag samples were analyzed chemically for FeO. Temperature was read after the last slag sample by immersion of a Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple protected by a fused silica sheath. Since no significant variation of rate with temperature was observed
