This paper reports the distribution of sulphur between iron and titanium in Fe-Ti-S alloys and in Fe-Ti-C-S alloys. The compound TiS was found, which exists as a separate phase at temperatures below 1200°C. Titanium in steels reacts with sulphur in preference to carbon. THE general relationship between sulphides and oxides suggests that titanium should form a sulphide having properties similar to those of titanium oxide. Specifically, titanium should form a sulphide having a high melting point, indicating a stable compound of low solubility in iron. In order for titanium to function as a desulphurizer or sulphur-fixing agent, it must form a stable sulphide. In order for titanium to be useful in steels as a sulphur-fixing agent, it must react with sulphur in preference to carbon; and to prevent red shortness, the sulphide formed must have solubility characteristics such that grain-boundary precipitation of a low melting phase be prevented. The terms desulphurizer and sulphur-fixing agent when used in this paper mean that titanium effectively ties up the sulphur as a stable sulphide of titanium and prevents the formation of FeS. The partition of sulphur between iron and titanium was studied first in a series of Fe-Ti-S alloys with carbon absent, and then in similar alloys with carbon present. It has been established1 a that titanium forms in Fe-Ti-S alloys a sulphide of undetermined composition which can be identified microscopically, and that the titanium-sulphur compound does not respond to sulphur printing. It has been suggested" that titanium acts as a sulphur-fixing agent, although little proof has been given. A report% f The Advisory Committee on Metals and Minerals summarizes the existing knowledge concerning substitutes for manganese in steels. Distribution of Sulphur Between lron and Titanium with Carbon Absent The alloys for this investigation were made by -melting Armco iron, metallic titanium, and iron sulphide in alundum crucibles in an induction furnace. The titanium was added after the other ingredients had melted. In these alloys it is recognized that some TiO, is present, since the melts were made in the air and since no other deoxidizing agent was used; therefore, some of the titanium was not available for union with sulphur. Thirteen ingots were made. Ingots 2 to 8 were cast in baked-sand molds; ingots 12 and 13 were cast in metal molds; and ingot 9 was allowed to cool in the crucible in which it was melted. All ingots were annealed at 900°C for 3 hr and were cooled slowly in the furnace. Subsequent information indicates that this anneal had no effect upon the titanium sulphide particle size, since the sulphide does not go into solution at this temperature. The ingots as-cast were approximately 8 in. long and % in. diam. The compositions of the eight ingots and the results of the partition of sulphur are recorded in Table I. Total titanium and total sulphur were determined by standard gravimetric methods. Sulphur, as iron sulphide, was determined by the evolution method. Boiling HC1 (1:4) liberates the sulphur from iron sulphide, but leaves the titanium sulphide practically undecomposed. A complete separation of titanium sulphide and iron sulphide cannot be made by digesting these compounds in dilute HC1 since titanium sulphide was found to dissolve slowly. The zone-melting technique can be adapted for the de-termination of the eutectic composition in complex metal systerrzs. The application of this method is demonstrated in a simple eutectic system, Mg-AE, in which the eutectic composition is known and in a complex ternary system, Mg-Al-Zn, in which the literature is uncertain as to the composition of the ternary eutectic. The advantages and limitations of this unique approach for the determirution of the eutectic composition are discussed. ThE eutectic composition in phase diagrams is usually determined by thermal analysis of a series of arbitarily selected alloy compositions. The temperatures of the liquidus and eutectic arrests for each alloy are plotted and the eutectic composition is estimated by extrapolation to the entectic temperature of the curve formed by the liquidus arrest temperatures for the series of alloys. Although this approach readily yields the eutectic temperatures, several dekrminations are needed to estimate the eutectic composition, even in a simple system. In a complex ternary system, a great many determinations are often necessary to estimate, even approximately, the ternary eutectic composition. Thus, the conventional method is inherently tedious and time consuming. The application of zone melting provides a relatively efficient method of determining the eutectic composition.' As an illustration, consider the zone melting of an alloy composition C, in the simple eutectic system A-B, shown in Fig. 1, under the ideal conditions of infinitely rapid diffusion in the liquid, no diffusion in the solid, and ease of nucleation of both phases. As the zone moves along the bar, the composition of the zone is enriched by solute rejected during the freezing of the a phase and the zone composition approaches the eutectic composition CE.Once the zone composition attains the lowest melting composition, i.e., the eutectic composition, it remains at this composition as the zone moves along the bar and finally freezes as such at the end of the bar. Chemical analysis of the end of such a zone-melted bar then should yield the eutectic composition CE of the system A-B. A corresponding analysis can be made for a ternary eutectic system. Under the ideal conditions noted above, only one pass of the molten zone is required to yield the eutectic composition. Experimentally, however, a solute-rich layer forms at the solid-liquid interface2 and the composition of the zone does not attain the eutectic composition as rapidly or as uniformly as in the ideal case outlined above. But with agitation of the melt, the ideal conditions can be approximated experimentally. Also, as shown below, zone melting permits a cumulative build-up of the solute at the end of the bar to the eutectic composition. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate this unique method for determining the eutectic composition. The method is here applied to two systems: first, to the binary Mg-A1 system, in which the composition is well established, and second, to the complex Mg-Al-Zn system in which there is doubt concerning the composition of the ternary eutectic. Gap electroluminescent diodes have been prepared by the vapor phase diffusion of zinc into n-Gap crystals which were grown from a gallium solution (10 wt pct Gap) doped with tellurium and Ga203. A marked improvement in the efficiency of the red electrolumines -cence has been achieved by heat treatment after diffusion. External quantum efficiencies of diodes annealed under optimum conditions are 0.2 to 0.6 pct at room temperature, or about 200 times higher than the efficiencies of diodes quenched after diffusion. The optimum dopant concentrations in the gallium melt from which the crystals were grown are 3to6 x at. pct Te and 4 to 8 x 10-2 mol pct Ga203. The efficient diodes are characterized by linearly graded junctions with an i-layer 0.1 to 0.2u thick. Annealing increases the emission intensity by a factor of 20 to 50 and decreases the current density to 1/3 to 1/8 that of quenched diodes at a given bias. The decrease in current is attributed to an annihilation of deep recombination centers in the depletion layer. The increase in emission intensity is interpreted in terms of an increase in lifetime of minority carriers and an increase in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. The dependence of these quantities on the tellurium and oxygen doping levels is also discussed. A number of studies have been made of the red light emission from for ward-biased Gap diodes.' At room temperature this emission band is centered at 7OOO? with a spectral width of nearly 1000?. Low-tempera-ture photoluminescence indicates that this emission is due to either the radiative annihilation of an exciton bound to a pair of zinc and oxygen atoms substituting on nearest neighbor lattice sites2,3 or the radiative recombination of an electron bound to this Zn-O pair with a hole bound to an isolated zinc shallow acceptor.3 An emission band is also observed with a spectral peak at 9800?. This infrared emission has been shown to be due to the recombination of an electron trapped at an isolated oxygen deep donor with a hole trapped at an isolated zinc acceptor.4 The red emission from Gap diodes is fairly efficient at room temperature because the nearest neighbor Zn-0 pair forms a deep electron trap at 0.3 to 0.4 ev below the edge of the conduction band.2'4 In diodes grown by liquid epitaxy an external quantum efficiency of 2.1 x 10-2 (photon/electron) has been attained by heat treatment at relatively low temperatures.5 This heat treatment was found to increase the efficiency by a factor of 3 to 6. However, no detailed studies have-been reported on the effects of heat treatment. We can only cite Onton and Lorenz's work6 on the change ; in the relative intensity of red-to-infrared emission. Heat treatment has also been tried on junctions built in during growth, but contrary to expectations the efficiency decreased. In-diffusion is a simple and controllable method of fabricating p-n junctions. For Gap, zinc is generally used to form a p-type layer on n-type crystals. The emission efficiencies of in-diffused diodes are, however, extremely low in comparison with liquid epitaxial diodes.' Although efficiencies as high as 2 x 1O-3 have been reported, values from 10-6 to 10-4 are generally obtained by typical diffusion techniques. Out-diffused diodes are known to be a little more efficient than in-diffused diodes. Nevertheless, the quantum efficiency is at most 7 x 10- 3 and ordinarily of the order of 10-4.8 NO results have been reported on heat treatment of either in-diffused or out-diffused diodes. This paper reports a marked improvement in the efficiency of the red emission observed for in-dif-fused diodes as a result of heat treatment after diffusion. The method described reproducibly yields diodes with external quantum efficiencies of 2 to 6 x 10-3. The observed dependence of efficiency on annealing time and on doping level will be discussed in terms of the lifetime of minority carriers and the formation of Zn-O complex pairs. EXPERIMENTAL A) Diode Fabrication. The n-Gap crystals used in this study were grown from a saturated gallium solution by a slow cooling method.8 The Gap content in the gallium melt was fixed to 10 wt pct corresponding to a growth temperature of about 1100 Tellurium was chosen as the n-type dopant and added to the melt in concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 0.06 at. pct. Oxygen was added in the form of Ga2O3, whose concentration was varied from 0.004 to 0.2 mol pct. The resulting crystals were platelets with well-developed (111) surfaces. Typical electrical properties were Hall mobilities of 130 to 30 sq cm per v-sec and carrier concentrations of 1016 to 10" cm-3 at room temperature. Diodes prepared from crystals with relatively low doping levels, in which u = 130 to 100 sq cm per v-sec and n = 0.6 to 6 x 1017 Cm-3, were examined in detail. The p-n junctions were produced in these n-Gap crystals by the diffusion of zinc from the vapor phase by the following procedure. The platelets were carefully lapped on both sides to a thickness of 150 to 200 u while maintaining the (111) orientation. After being etched in hot aqua regia, the crystals together with the zinc were sealed in an evacuated 12 mm ID quartz ampoule 20 cm long. Diffusion in the presence of deformation was studied by the method of vacuum dezincification of copper-rich and silver-rich solid solutions containing 7 to 30 pct Zn. The specimens were designed to permit the study of diffusion in separate portions of a given specimen characterized by strain rates ranging from essentially zero to approximately 10 sec-. No effect of deformation on diffusion was observed. BEGINNING with the work of Buffington and Cohen: interest in the question of the effect of stress or strain on diffusion has largely been concentrated on the enhancement of diffusion in specimens subjected to Continuous plastic deformation. The present research is a contribution to this limited area. However, as a preliminary to focusing attention on this special topic, it will be desirable to make a broad survey of the larger question, especially since there has been considerable foreign work in areas outside those of current interest in the United States. Since most of the topics referred to in the following section are both complex and imperfectly understood at present, it has been expedient in most instances to offer only a guide to the general nature of the work rather than a critical evaluation. PREVIOUS WORK The effect of elastic stress on diffusion has received considerable attention, especially with regard to the thermodynamic driving force for diffusion. The thermodynamic treatments have been based on the work of Gibb, Voigt, Planck, and Leontovich.' Konobeevskii and Selisski6 made a first attempt at treating the problem in 1933, and Gorskii7 a few years later gave a solution applicable to single crystals as well as to polycrystalline specimens. In 1943 Konobeevski8 published treatments that have been the basis of much Russian work up to the present. For example, Aleksandrov and Lyubov used his work in explaining the velocity of lateral growth of pearlite. Early work in the United States was that of Mooradian and Norton, which showed that lattice distortion tends to be relieved before it can significantly affect the diffusion process. Druyvesteyn and Berghoutl1 observed a slight effect of elastic strain on self-diffusion in copper, while de Kazinczy12 found that both elastic and plastic deformation increased the rate of diffusion of hydrogen in steel. On the other hand, Grimes58 observed no effect of either elastic or plastic straining on the diffusion of hydrogen in nickel. High-frequency alternating stresses have been reported by various investigator s13-l5 to increase the rate of diffusion. A special form of elastic stressing is the imposition of hydrostatic pressure, a condition that is amenable to Conventional thermodvnamic analysis. Most of the experimental results in this area are consistent in showing a slight decrease in diffusion rates at high pressures.16-l8 Although Geguzinl reported a pronounced effect of relatively small pressures, Barnes and Mazey20 failed to Corroborate this finding, while Guy and Spinelli21 advanced an explanation of the phenomenon observed by Geguzin. It has been recognized that the thermodynamic treatment of diffusion phenomena in an arbitrarily stressed body is complicated by the fact that the desired state of quasi-equilibrium of the shear stresses cannot be maintained during a general diffusion process. However, attempts have been made by Meix-ner22-24 and Fasto to treat certain restricted cases, such as relaxation. FastovZ7 has also incorporated the general stress tensor into the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The lattice strain that accompanies the formation of a solid solution has been the subject of much study,28-s0 and indirectly it has entered into many recent theories of diffusion. However, some Russian investigators31'32 have taken other views of this matter and have predicted large effects on diffusion rates because of concentration stresses.o In completing this brief resume of previous work involving elastic strains and before proceeding to a consideration of the effect of continuous plastic deformation, it should be pointed out that deformation of various additional types may also influence diffusion. The effect of cold-working on subsequent diffusion has been studied directly by AndreevaS and by Schumann and Erdmann-Jesnitzer, while indirect evidence has been obtained by Miller and Guarnieri and by Vitman.38 Thermal stresses may also influence diffusion, contributions to this subject having been made by Fastovs7 and by Aleksandrov and Lyubv. The work of Johnson and Martin,o Dienes and Damask,3Band DamaskS considered the question of radiation-enhanced diffusion. In considering previous work on the subject of plastic deformation and diffusion, attention will be directed to those studies concerned primarily with diffusion rather than with its relation to Creep, e.g., the work of Dorn, or to the acceleration of diffusion -controlled reactions. Wilkens and Nitze are in the highest degree interesting to owners of low-grade iron-ores, aizd no less so to blast-furnace managers. If it can be shown that ores heretofore considered worthless can be brought within the limit of economic use, many large and readily accessible deposits may come into market on the one hand, while on the other the possible increase in the output of the furnace per ton of ore used will prove of advantage to the iron-maker. It cannot, of course, be claimed that this process has been employed on a working-scale with respect to iron-ores, and in so far as concerns results on a large scale no one is any wiser than his fellow. Granting that the results obtained in an experimental way (and certainly the experiments were conducted with a great deal of care) can be attained in practice, we would still be facing the question, what it would cost to get them. In the absence of any specific data, we have to fall back on general principles, helped along, as far as possible, by indications afforded by the experiments. I must confess that as regards the Clinton ores, which I have studied to some extent, I am not sanguine of making a ton of 53 to 54 per cent. concentrates from less than 1.75 tons of 40 per cent. raw ore. It may be possible to get the iron in the heads to 56 to 57 per cent., but the lesser richness of the middlings will probably reduce this to 53 to 54 per cent. in the salable stuff. As the authors remark, it is not worth while to discuss the concentration of the better grades of " soft" Clinton ore; for the price at which they are now delivered at the furnaces, and the comparatively limited amount now remaining, render their concentration unadvisable. THE remarkable increase in the distribution of the small underfeed stoker for use in furnaces and boilers in small industrial plants, apartment houses and homes has brought producers and distributors of bituminous coal to consider the problem of which coals and which sizes are best suited to this market. Many papers have also appeared, mostly in the trade journals, discussing the problem of the combustion of various coals and various sizes of coal in small stokers. Much difference of opinion has been apparent in these articles; due often, it would appear, to a mis-understanding of the fundamentals of the process of combustion in the stoker fuel bed. During the past year and a half, a program of research has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute: (1) On the process of combus-tion in the fuel bed of the small stoker, sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, and (2) on the relation of the characteristics of bituminous coals to their performance on small underfeed stokers, sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. As a result of this program of research, two publica-tions have been made, one1 dealing with the problem of clinker formation, and the other2 with the relation of the size of the coal fed to the stoker hopper to that of the coal that reaches the retort to be burned. The experimental research on the relation of size to the performance of the coal is being actively continued. A publication of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. presenting the data obtained on the performance of several sizes of four typical bituminous coals will appear shortly. Because of the early appearance of that publication, the present paper includes few numerical data. The purpose of this paper is to follow the coal from the hopper through the furnace with a discussion of the various actions that occur, in the hope that it will lead to a clearer understanding of the relation of the type of coal, the size of coal, and other characteristics, to the performance. The authors do not pretend to have obtained the answers to all the complex questions involved; many unanswered questions will be proposed on which future research work is planned.

Every mathematical statement of a measure of anything (as distinguished from a count') is followed by a qualification—always implied if not explicity stated—-that the statement is only an estimate, which may vary from absolute accuracy within certain limits, according to the accuracy of the measuring instrument. This basic fact, so obvious to engineers, is not so well understood by many that make use of laboratory coal tests. The tolerances that must be allowed in measurements of coal quality are very important in both their commercial and engineering applications—and the significance of these tolerances depends upon the use made of the laboratory coal test. Only in recent years has there been any intensive study of this question of tolerances as applied to measurements of coal quality. There is very little in our published literature on the subject, and what has been published is not readily comprehended by those who sell coal, or buy coal and use it, unless they happen to have made a study of the subject themselves. There is great need for more widespread understanding of what lias been discovered and how it applies to the use of laboratory coal tests. What follows is an attempt to condense into a few pages the results of the major investigations so far reported, and to explain their meaning in simple nontechnical language, with the addition of some recent illustrative experiments. Determining Deviations in Quality It is necessary at the outset to distinguish between: (I) the accuracy with which one test indicates the quality on one lot of coal; and (2) the accuracy with which a test of one lot of coal represents the average quality of a commercial product, of which the buyer will presumably receive a series of shipments—perhaps many thousands of tons. It is necessary to make this distinction because coal is a variable material—a heterogeneous mixture of a variety of components—the quality of which will vary from one lot to another. Every mathematical statement of a measure of anything (as distinguished from a count') is followed by a qualification—always implied if not explicity stated—-that the statement is only an estimate, which may vary from absolute accuracy within certain limits, according to the accuracy of the measuring instrument. This basic fact, so obvious to engineers, is not so well understood by many that make use of laboratory coal tests. The tolerances that must be allowed in measurements of coal quality are very important in both their commercial and engineering applications—and the significance of these tolerances depends upon the use made of the laboratory coal test. Only in recent years has there been any intensive study of this question of tolerances as applied to measurements of coal quality. There is very little in our published literature on the subject, and what has been published is not readily comprehended by those who sell coal, or buy coal and use it, unless they happen to have made a study of the subject themselves. There is great need for more widespread understanding of what lias been discovered and how it applies to the use of laboratory coal tests. What follows is an attempt to condense into a few pages the results of the major investigations so far reported, and to explain their meaning in simple nontechnical language, with the addition of some recent illustrative experiments. Determining Deviations in Quality It is necessary at the outset to distinguish between: (I) the accuracy with which one test indicates the quality on one lot of coal; and (2) the accuracy with which a test of one lot of coal represents the average quality of a commercial product, of which the buyer will presumably receive a series of shipments—perhaps many thousands of tons. It is necessary to make this distinction because coal is a variable material—a heterogeneous mixture of a variety of components—the quality of which will vary from one lot to another. They let the whole world know again that not only could we do it, but we make it look easy. The great crews before Scott, Irwin and Worden of Apollo 15 have all blended warm humor, informality and dexterity to put on a good show: but it keeps getting better and the last one was the best. Scott's rendition of Galileo's experiment using a hammer and a feather--not just any feather, but a falcon feather after the name of the LEM-was priceless. One generation of school kids will never forget that lesson. The final touch was in the "would-you-believe''" category, Now if English astronauts had been performing the mission, the sign-off would have been typically low key. Something like; "well its tea time, chaps; we'll have to toddle along." Apollo 15 surprised and thrilled spectators by blasting off to the Air Force song "Off we go into the wild blue yonder" and leaving a camera behind to photograph their own ascent. Now that is what we call showmanship. There is another aspect to our space show and that is that it cost billions of dollars to put on. With that kind of backing, the world for an audience and in the face of grave personal risk, one would expect the space explorers to be all business. Instead they did their jobs with limpid buoyancy. Our older readers will recall and contrast a movie of the thirties and the tense atmosphere when they had to talk that kid up there (Franchot Tone) down through the zero ceiling. A feat of considerably less difficulty than docking LEM. but nevertheless the gut tightening drama was absent in the latter event. In another example, few of us can visualize reporting back after a business mission to one of the old barons such as J. P. Morgan in any but the most sedate and business-like terms. In fact we don't have to go that far back, as we can think of a few pepper-pot bosses we have had to whom one always played it straight.

To THE average person, the purport of the items and figures on the balance sheet of a mining company are hazy and the real financial condition of the company is cloaked in obscurity. It is also likely that the satisfaction of the stockholder in his investment, as well as the determination of the prospective investor, rests more on the reputation of the company, his confidence in the management, the stated earnings per share and the dividends paid, than on a comprehension of the information contained in the balance sheet. The balance sheet of any company at best can only closely approximate the true financial condition as of a given date. Any item of asset, except cash, can probably be altered if another's viewpoint is applied. It is difficult and expensive to drill and explore an orebody to determine the entire tonnage of ore therein. Those inherent difficulties render it practically impossible to prepare an absolutely correct balance sheet of a mining company. It is possible, however, to present the facts of a mining company more intelligently and comprehensively than is usually done. With this, in mind, a balance sheet of an imaginary mining company is submitted, with supporting schedules. The same fundamental principles hold true whether we consider a large or a small company. Less complexity is involved in dealing with the affairs of a smaller company. Therefore, for this purpose, the assumed company operates but two mines and a smelting plant. It has been deemed advisable to introduce the features of the operation of a mine acquired prior to March 1, 1913 and one after that date. The presentation therefore is concerned in one mine with the appraisement as of March 1, 1913 and in the other with the appraisement by reason of discovery. A consequential factor pertains to dividends paid from depletion reserves and therefore free of surtax to the stockholders. While supporting schedules, when necessary, give details of certain items on the balance sheet, it seems desirable to give further explanations with respect to some of them. This seems to be important because some mining companies do not treat the items as indicated on the statements submitted.
