THE W. I. Cook pool in Shackelford County, Texas, has been the subject of a number of papers and articles. Its unique position both as to operation and development has made it an ideal location for unit repressuring. The major portion of the pool is located on the W. I. Cook ranch and most of the oil leases are owned by Roeser & Pendleton, FIG. 1.-PRODUCING SAND CONTOURS, COOK POOL, JAN. 1, 1931. Inc. and the Continental Oil Co. and operated by Roeser & Pendleton, Inc. The Humble Oil & Refining Co. and Tom James operate producing leases which have a vital bearing on the unity of the pool. Cook and she has given the operators her entire cooperation in all phases of unit repressuring.

In the middle of the eighteenth century John Frazier and wife, Sarah Ingraham, removed from Boston, Mass., to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was held in such esteem that we find him one of the Committee which arranged the ball at Washington's inauguration. Their son, John Nalbro Frazier, was prosperous in his mercantile career and fortunate in his wife, Anne West, who was an important personage in the early life of Professor Frazier. This cultured lady brought into the family an atmosphere of religious enthusiasm, of thoroughness and of unity of purpose. Her son, Benjamin West Frazier, inherited her traits and displayed them during a short and active life. Like his father, he engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was a member of the firm of Zimmerman, Frazier & Co. In their interests he lived for a short time in Montevideo, and on

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the rate of uranium and molybdenum extraction from a flow reactor. Specific variables tested are fluid throughput and flow rate, lixiviant cation, and injected pH and carbonate concentration. The ore tested was from the Felder mine in southern Texas. It contained substantial quantities of marcasite and molybdenum disulfide that competed with the uranium ore for oxidant. Flow studies showed the oxidation of molybdenum disulfide under field conditions is mass transfer controlled, whereas the uranium oxidation is limited by surface reaction rate. The rate of uranium oxidation decreased with decreasing pH. The total carbonate levels, on the other hand, were unimportant. Ammonium carbonate appears to greatly decrease, if not completely halt, the reaction of marcasite with the oxygen. This effect was not found using either sodium or potassium carbonate.

Henry Carlisle: This is June, 1961, and my friend Arthur Bunker is on the other side of the tape recorder. I, Henry Carlisle, am pursuing the hobby of chronicling the interesting parts of the mining careers and the lives of well-known mining engineers. Now, Arthur, supposing we skip, for the time being, where you were born and brought up, and start right in with where you went to school. Arthur Bunker: I graduated from Taft School and then went to Yale, Sheffield Scientific School, and took a course in electrical engineering. I was quite fascinated by higher mathematics and physics, and this offered more in mathematics and physics than any other one of the engineering courses at that time. The school was only a three-year course, and so I graduated from there in 1916.

Stanley D. Michaelson retired in 1976 as chief engineer, Metal Mining Div. and director of the Engineering Center for Kennecott Copper Corp. An active consultant on mining and metallurgical assignments, Mr. Michaelson is also currently adjunct professor of mining engineering at the University of Utah. He received his B.S. degree in mining engineering from Lehigh University in 1934 and an honorary E.M. degree from the Montana School of Mines in 1961. Mr. Michaelson received AIME's Robert H. Richards Award in 1962 and was named a Distinguished Member of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME in 1975. He has served as a Director and as a Vice-President on the AIME Board of Directors and is a Past President of the Society of Mining Engineers. He became an Honorary Member of AIME in 1978.

Mechanical properties of the eutectic between CoAl and cobalt were measured over a range of- temnperatures and strain rates for a variety of microstructures produced by directional solidification and by thermo-mechanical processing. Directional solidification led to rodlike, lamellar, and irregular microstructures. The unusually high volume fraction of the cobalt-rich rods and the lurge spacing of the rods were explained by the phase diagram. The hot-worked structure consisted of fibers of COAL in a cobalt-rich matrix. The roonl- tevlperature strength of the uvrought material increased with decreasing grain size but the 1000°C strength decreased with decreasing pain size. At high temperatures the directionally solidified tnaterial was stronger and less strain-rate-sensitice than the hot-rolled material. The fine-grained hot-worked ma-terial became superplastic at high temperatures, with tensile elongations greater than 850 pct, while at root temperature this material was ductile and impact-resistant because of the ductile matrix. Fracture occurred in the directionally solidified material at elevated temperatures by inter phase separation and at roorn temperature by cracks in the intermetallic phase. Growth of these cracks was impeded by the ductile cobalt-rich phase. It was found that the CoAl intermetallic remains ordered at elevated temperatures. DIRECTIONAL solidification of eutectic alloys has been used to produce structures consisting of parallel rods or lamellae. Although the spacing of the phases depends on the growth rate, it has been observed to be of the order of 1 µ in many eutectics. A strong intermetallic phase has been used to reinforce a ductile matrix in the rod eutectic A1-Al3Ni and the lamellar eutectic Al-Al2cu.1 The microstructure of the eutectics A1-A13Ni and A1-A12Cu remained aligned after samples of these alloys were exposed to temperatures just below their melting points for long times. Stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures makes directionally solidified eutectics a candidate for high-temperature applications. Recently Thompson4 has developed the Ni-NiMo eutectic containing 40 pct NiMo lamellae, giving a tensile strength superior to nickel-base superalloys. Unfortunately, this eutectic oxidizes rapidly at elevated temperatures. By mechanically processing a two-phase structure, one may reach strengths as high as 700,000 psi, as demonstrated by drawn pearlite.5 In this case the strengthening mechanism was thought to be related to the fine substructure formed during deformation.5 However, a heavily worked structure may recrystallize and coarsen at elevated temperatures. Some worked eutectics such as Al-Al2Cu,6 Pb-Sn,7 and Sn-Bi7 have shown unusually large elongations in tension when tested at elevated temperatures. This phenomenon of large extension, called "superplasticity", was related to the fine grain size of wrought two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures. A mode of deformation of "superplastic" material has been shown to be grain boundary sliding,' which has also been observed during creep of polycrystalline materials.9 The Co-A1 system was chosen for this investigation after examining the phase diagrams of binary eutectics." The high melting point of 1400°C, the aluminum content which was expected to give oxidation resistance, and the properties of the intermetallic CoAl were the chief factors influencing this choice. This eutectic consists of a mixture of the intermetallic CoAl and a cobalt-rich solid solution. The intermetallic CoAl has a large range of solubility and a CsCl structure." From the similarity between CoAl and NiAl one would expect CoAl to be ordered at elevated temperatures; however, specific heat measurements" show a transition at 800°C. West-brookL2 has measured the hot hardness of CoAl and found a rapid decrease in hardness above 600°C. The tensile properties and stress rupture properties of as-cast CoAl-Co eutectic were measured by Ashbrook and wallace13 who report a room-temperature tensile elongation of less than 1 pct. I) EXPERIMENTAL A) Sample Preparation. Experimental materials were prepared by directional solidification, by hot working, and by powder processing. The starting materials were electrolytic 99.9 pct pure cobalt and 99.99 pct pure aluminum. 1) Directional Solidification. A vertical Bridgman apparatus heated by induction was used to directionally solidify cylindrical ingots $ in. in diam and 5 in. long. The apparatus was first evacuated and then an argon atmosphere was introduced to retard evaporation. The ingots were contained in an alumina crucible inside a graphite susceptor that rested on a movable water-cooled base. The base was lowered out of the induction coil at a constant rate. Eight of the ingots were solidified using a drive rate of 2.5 cm per hr, two of the ingots at 1.2 cm per hr, and one ingot at 10 cm per hr. The eutectic composition Co 10 wt pct A1 was used in all but one ingot which had the composition of the stoichiometric CoAl intermetallic, Co 32 wt pct Al. 2) Mechanical Processing. At 1000°C the eutectic Co 10 wt pct A1 is a mixture of an intermetallic phase, Co 21 wt pct Al, and a cobalt-rich phase, Co 5 wt pct Al.10 These phases differ from the stoichiometric CO 32 wt pct A1 and pure cobalt because of the large solubility of this eutectic at elevated temperatures." Four rectangular slab ingots, 4 by 1 by 12 in. high, of Co 10 wt pct Al, Co 5 wt pct Al, Co 21 wt pct Al, and Co 32 wt pct A1 were cast for hot rolling. THe answer to the title question will be found by considering the ultimate influence of the petroleum engineers on industry and by considering the tools with which petroleum engineers must be equipped. Some 2000 to 3000 petroleum engineers are being absorbed by the industry yearly, indicating the magnitude of influence which they may exert on the industry. The petroleum industry is a highly technical one and it is inevitable that management be entrusted more and more to executives with technical training. The industry, therefore, expects the petroleum engineering schools to provide a broad basic training and a social and economic orientation which goes beyond merely supplying the minimum technical qualifications necessary to discharge responsibilities for a particular job. Because of the many branches of industry, emphasis must be placed on the Student's being trained in fundamentals, as well as grounded in other engineering branches, such as mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. The petroleum engineering graduate must know how to outline and organize the material for an engineering report and should be thoroughly grounded in English, both written and spoken. Even to the end that a five-year course may be required, they should receive instructions in auxiliary cultural and social science courses, industrial relations, and public speaking. Training in the method of approach to an engineering problem is something in which industry is deeply interested. A standard of ethics, a desire to arrive at the truth, and leadership training should be stressed. Introduction The basis of an an to any ques- tion concerning the petroleum engineering schools' responsibility to the industry will be found by considering the ultimate influence of the petroleum engineers on the industry and by considering also the tools with which petroleum engineers must be equipped in order to achieve success and happiness in the role in which their training, individual talents and choice of a profession ultimately will cast them. The problem must always be considered as it relates to a large group and not as it relates to a particular individual possessing strong natural talents and destined, by virtue of them, to pursue a certain course. The question implies that petroleum engineering schools have a responsibility, and indeed they do, not only to the industry but also to the students and even to the public. Because the responsibility is concentrated in a relatively few schools whose graduates are absorbed largely by the one industry, the responsibility is more apparent and the effect of failure to discharge the responsibility fully is more serious than the effect of similar failure on the part of schools supplying a smaller portion of the industry's intake of engineering graduates. This fact is especially true with respect to an industry such as the petroleum industry whose ratio of technical to nontechnical employees is relatively high and is increasing.

The morphology of the nucleation and growth of austenite into high-purity iron in NH3-H2, gas mixtzires has been studied. The growth rate of an austenitic rim (planar interface) from scratched surfaces of- polycrystalline iron specimens was determined as a function of temperature and percent NH3 and found to he in reasonahle agreement with growth-rate calculations based on a model which assumes the diffusion of nitrogen to he the rate-controlling step. Under certain conditions, austenite pew as platelets; growth rates of these along the surface of single crystals were found to he dependent on surface preparation, orientation, THE development of microstructures can conveniently be thought of in terms of nucleation and growth. The complex topic of nucleation in solid-solid transformations will not be discussed at length, although a few qualitative experiments were performed. Growth is determined by the mobility of the various possible interfaces under the available driving forces in a particular situation. In homophase transformations, it has been clearly demonstrated that the mobility is very sensitive to small amounts of impurities, to the kind of impurity, and to the orientation relations across the boundary.' A degree of quantitative knowledge has temperature and percent NH3. On electropolished surfaces with a (110) pole, the maximum growth rate of platelets was determined and found to be in agreement within a factor of 2 to 3 with theoretical calculations of the edgewise growth rate of a platelet. The calculations are based on a model which assumes that the diffusion of nitrogen in the ferrite in front of the moving curved attstenitic interface at the tip of the platelet is the rate-controlling step. The growth direction on the surface of the single crystal and resztlting habit plane of the platelets were determined and found not to he unique but to vary systematically with the pole of the surface. been obtained. In the case of heterophase transformations, which are significantly more complicated to treat, a comparison of theoretical and experimental studies often shows rather poor agreement.'-' The main purpose of the experiments discussed below was to obtain additional quantitative data on crystallographic effects on boundary mobility in a system which was otherwise as simple as possible, viz. the growth of iron-nitrogen austenite into fer-rite. In the course of the experiments, it became necessary to re-examine the theory for the growth of Widmanstatten plates, especially the influence of anisotropic interfacial free energy. Some other minor experiments in the Fe-N system were performed, and are described briefly. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS A) Material Preparation. One hundred and twenty miles of hard travel over steep ridges almost due east from Fayetteville, on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, about 100 miles from Eureka Hot Springs, or 75 miles northwest from Batesville, will bring the traveller to the waters of the Buffalo Fork of the White river, in a wild, thinlysettled, heavily-timbered country, now being prospected quite actively for zinc, and known as the Buffalo or Rush Creek district. Excepting here and there a piece of bottom land, patented before the discovery of zinc, the land is unoccupied Government land, and subject to entry under the United States mineral laws. Claims are now being taken, 600 by 1500 feet, but a movement made this summer, if successful, will largely modify the position of claim-holders. A few claims are now being filed under the Placer Act on the ground that as the zinc occurs as a horizontal, sedimentary deposit, etc., it can only be properly so classified. For the last five years the furnace-men drawing their oresupply from the Lake Superior districts have had to solve the problem of using the very fine Mesabi ores as part of their oremixture. It is not my purpope to dwell on the early experiences and the progressive development in the use of these ores up to this time, but to lay before the members of the Institute one prominent feature concerning them, namely, the frequent and sometimes very disastrous slips (?) or explosions (?) occurring at furnaces where these ores are used. The Transactions of the Institute contain very little on this subject. Mr. F. E. Bachman, in his discussion of Mr. 0. 0. Laudig's paper (Trans., xxvi., 1061), advances a theory as to the cause of these occurrences; but this is the only reference to the subject in the Transactions up to this time, so far as I can recall. PRIOR to 1934 all haulage of ore and stripping on the Mesabi Range was by rail. Early rail systems had small narrow-gage locomotives with correspondingly small dump cars. These trains were replaced with larger standard gage rail systems powered by steam locomotives ranging up to 224 tons in weight, which have in turn been replaced by diesel electric locomotives. Along with this development cars have been increased to 30-cu yd capacity. Improvement of cars includes alloy steel construction for lower over-all weight and use of roller bearings to decrease rolling resistance. Despite all of these developments, the total material hauled by rail on the Mesabi Range has decreased every year. Yet, this is no reason to believe that rail haulage is becoming obsolete. Its adaptation to small mine operation has become impractical, but in large mines where normal railroad grades are possible or where hauls to plants or dumps are long, rail haulage is still one of the most economical methods of transporting large quantities of material.

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1943 was approximately 8200 bbl., slightly less than the 1942 production, Counties. Some half dozen wells in Clay, Fentress, and Pickett Counties, pumped intermittently, produced about 1000 barrels. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas, respectively. The Morgan County production was about I0,000,000 cu. ft. and approximately 8,000,000 cu. ft. was produced from the Jamestown gas field from six wells. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table I. Thirteen wells were spudded during the year; three were drilling on Dec. I, 1943. Of the nine completions, representing 10,488 ft. of hole, three were gas' wells of commercial size although only one of them has been placed on the line. The completions are listed in Table 2. Personal gain seems to be the most powerful incentive to economic progress. One of my first exposures to this phenomenon was the comparison between company stopes and leaser's stopes in a vein gold mine. The company stopes were 4 to 6 ft wide, whereas the leaser's stopes were so narrow that in some places one could not turn around. The company leased only that ground it felt was marginal to mine with day's- pay miners, but by skillful, careful and energetic mining, the leasers managed in most cases to make money for themselves and the company. The Hurting Truth This capitalist system, which puts a premium on successful risk taking, is under attack. Not that it hasn't been under attack all along. What hurts and angers us at this time is that the attack comes from the children of the system-its youth. Such blasphemy should, of course, be eradicated, root and branch. Or should it? Are we hurt in part because some of the things they say are true?

At the office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, there is a unique collection of engineering material used and developed in the present war. It. is a most interesting group of war devices, from the special trench shovel that excavates both gas and water, to the standard gage locomotives that were sent to France so complete that they were lifted from the ships by cranes, placed on the-rails on shore, filled with water, fired up, and moved out from underneath the cranes under their own steam. Everything is exhibited either by models, or by photograph where the original samples are too large to admit of demonstration in an ordinary office. The forestry section has an interesting exhibit of the wonderful work clone in France; where, owing to the shortage of coal and the necessity for burning wood, the Forestry Unit of the A. E. F. in one month stacked up 60 mi. of cord wood (80,000 cords); also cut 6.6 mi. of timber, stacked 12 ft. long, and 10 ft. high, containing 50,000,000 hoard feet of sawed timber.

To the question, " Do the Pennsylvania anthracites contain phosphorus?" asked at the last meeting of the Institute during the discussion on the metallurgical value of Western lignites, I can now give a definite answer. Through the kindness of a gentleman connected with the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and another connected with one of the principal ironworks on the Lehigh, there was sent to the Ironmasters' Laboratory a number of samples of the coals now largely shipped from the Schuylkill and Lehigh regions. Seventeen of these I examined for their contents of ash and phosphorus, and obtained results as follows : Ash. Phosphorus.
