The conditions under which barium carbonate can be used to remove sulfates from drilling muds are limited The amount of sulfate remaining in solution in the system after treatment with barium carbonate is shown to be a function of the concentration of the carbonate and barium ions and the concentration of other electrolytes. Barium hydroxide may advantageously replace barium carbonate when the contamination is not entirely due to anhydrite (calcium in the system is then stoichiometrically less than sulfate) or when the carbonate concentration is high. The effect of substances such as quebracho, phosphates, and chromates, which form complexes or precipitates with barium, is discussed. INTRODUCTION As the complexity of the operations in drilling for oil has increased, more attention has of necessity been directed to the problems pertaining to the maintenance of good drilling mud properties. As a result, chemical treatment of muds has become an important factor in recent years. Some of these treatments have been designed to eliminate the deleterious effects of contaminants in aqueous mud systems by precipitation or other means. The most common of substances encountered during drilling include sodium chloride, cement, and calcium sulfate while various other contaminants: usually in small amounts, may be introduced from the water, clays, and other materials used in preparation of the mud. In certain cases, for example where continued salt-water flow is encountered or massive anhydrite is drilled, special muds may be used so that the physical properties of the mud will remain satisfactory for drilling. In other cases, it is desirable to remove the contaminants so that soluble electrolytes in the system are maintained at low values. For sulfate contamination, the conlmon practice in the field is to add barium carbonate to precipitate the sulfate as barium sulfate Ordinarily such a procedure gives satisfactory results. There have been important instances, however, where addition of barium carbonate was not effective in removal of soluble sulfates from drilling muds. and it is to these cases that the present paper is directed. While it is generally known that barium carbonate is not always effective in removing soluble sulfates from drilling muds, certain inconsistencies appear in the literature as to the limitations of its use, and little explanation for the limitations are given. Varnell and Kimbrel state that "the treatment (with barium carbonate for removal of sulfate) is simple and consists in maintaining a pH of 9 with caustic soda and quebracho." They caution that concentrations of quebracho greater than 1 lb./bbl. may inhibit the reaction. In another publication', a pH of 10.5 is considered "the maximum desirable," and the indication is that as much as 2.5 lb. quebracho per barrel may be present in the particular mud under discussion. Lancaster and Mitchell5 state that appreciable amounts of phosphates in the mud will inhibit the reaction with barium carbonate and that the phosphate treatment should be discontinued at least 24 hours before addition of the carbonate. Experimental work was initiated to ascertain the factors involved in using barium carbonate for the removal of sulfate contamination in drilling muds. While the experimental data herein reported are limited, they focus attention on the pertinent factors which must be considered for successful treatment. These factors are discussed from a practical and a theoretical view, the latter being supported by equilibrium data found in the literature. Further, it will be appreciated that the factors involved in this specific study will be closely analogous to those in certain of the other chemical treatments which involve a precipitation of the soluble contaminant. A thorough comprehension of these factors should result in a more fruitful application of this type of chemical reaction to the treatment of drilling muds. EXPERIMENTAL A. Reagents Two muds were used during this investigation. For one series of tests, bentonite suspensions were prepared by dilution of a stock suspension containing 8 per cent by weight of bentonite (Aquagel). For another series, a 6.4 per cent ben-tonitic mud weighted to 9.7 lb./gal. with barium sulfate (Mag-cobar) was used. Distilled water was used in all preparations. The quebracho (72% tannin extract) was obtained from the Thompson-Hayward Co. of Tulsa and contained 11.4 per cent moisture (105 C.). All other materials were reagent grade, and concentrations were corrected for water of crystallization, if any. All concentrations are expressed in pounds per barrel (42 gallons). B. Technique The systems — either mud or water — were contaminated with either sodium or calcium sulfate after treatment with the desired amounts of sodium hydroxide and quebracbo. For treatments with barium carbonate an approximately 3-fold excess (5 lb./bbl.) was used over that computed to be required to precipitate all the sulfate as barium sulfate. THe necessity of adopting improved methods of bituminous-coal cleaning at many collieries is recognized by all familiar with the requirements of the various bituminous markets, the approaching exhaustion of the relatively small areas of inherently high-grade coal, and the difficulties encountered in maintaining a uniform grade of shipped coal. Many coals lose much of their market value by degradation in size, and, in any event, if the cleaning .process is to contemplate wetting the coal the minimum amount of fines should be produced to prevent sludge losses and the difficulties resulting from the moisture content of the wet fines. Hence, it is desirable to bypass the finer coal dry, if this can be done without too great increase in impurities in the final product. This procedure has given excellent results at washeries at Steelton and in the Birmingham district. If the raw fines are too impure to permit admixture with the washed coal, it may be desirable to use dry methods, such as the pneumatic table, rather than to wet an excessive amount of such fine material. The bituminous-coal cleaning plant should therefore: (1) Treat the raw coal in as large lump as possible and without sizing; (2) eliminate degradation of pure coal in the washing process; (3) avoid wetting the fines, if possible; (4) produce washed coal practically free from mechanically included impurities; (5) crush the refuse and retreat, if much intergrown coal and refuse are present, rather than precrush the entire feed. Ordinary gravimetric methods of concentration, whether hydraulic or pneumatic, will not meet all of these requirements, as the large lump includes those sizes now sent to the picking tables, if it is desired to treat material of such size. I do not know of any prior commercial method, based on the falling velocity, coefficient of friction or resistance to fracture, that permits the production of clean coal varying in size from, say, 10-in. lump to 1/16-in. mesh. The effect on the specific gravity of any given coal as a result of variations in ash and pyritic sulfur content is well known; in fact, it has been made use of in commercially ascertaining ash content by deter-

Discovery is the first step in the location of the claim. The provision of the Revised Statutes (2320) is, " No location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of the vein or lode within the limits of the claim located." Strictly speaking, discovery may be defined as the finding of ore or metalliferous rock in place in a well-defined vein. This definition was too strict, so discovery extended later to cover such indications of the pregence of ore, within rock in place, as would justify an experienced miner in spending his time and money with a reasonable expectation of finding ore in paying quantities. According to Colorado statutes a discovery must show a well-defined crevice; in Arizona, a lode, deposit, or mineral in place; in Montana, a well-defined crevice or valuable depositi; in Nevada, a lode or deposit of mineral in place. It is wrong to require a discovery. An honest prospector, wishing to obey the law, finds himself compelled, in most cases, to evade this point. In Clear Creek district, Colorado, a quartz seam will constitute a discovery; in Butte, a red capping; in Leadville or Ely, it is any place where a man can find a piece of vacant ground big enough upon which to sink a . 10-ft. hole. If the vein or deposit outcrops a man can show a discovery, but if it does not outcrop it is foolish to compel him to show one; and this point has been gently side-stepped. Any hole 10 ft. deep now constitutes a discovery. It is no use having laws that the people cannot consistently ob_ey. No sane man will dig unless he expects to find mineral, and he should be protected while digging. He should be required to show that he has mineral ground only when he comes to patent.

It has been observed that upon invasion of a sand containing oil or gas and connate water by mud filtrate the hydrocarbons are more rapidly flushed by the filtrate than is the connate water.' In time, it appears that the following displacement pattern emerges: oil (or gas) is being swept ahead by connate water which, in turn, is pushed by invading fluid. Eventually the connate water may have "banked up" sufficiently to form a zone of appreciable thickness leading the invading front. In the extreme case, Fig. 1 shows how the situation will develop.' Immediately adjacent to the borehole (radius r) there is a zone, the invaded zone proper, where the connate water has been flushed out completely and which contains only residual oil or gas and mud filtrate. This zone (extending out to a radius ri) grades more or less abruptly into the next (thickness A), which contains only residual hydrocarbon and connate water. Beyond it, again more or less sharply bounded, extends the virgin formation with the original interstitial water saturation Sw. The various saturations are indicated in Fig. 1. The three zones generally will be marked by resistivity contrasts owing to their different fluid contents. As the connate water is usually more saline than the invading fluid, the second zone having a high connate water saturation forms a concentric cylindrical ring or annulus of low resistivity R, around the borehole.',' It will be referred to as the "low zone." Fig. 1 shows schematically the resistivity profile. It is clear that the phenomenon of a low zone could not occur in invaded water sands. The presence of a low zone, therefore, would be a qualitative indication of a hydrocarbon-bearing formation. Granted that the phenomenon is real, if it were pronounced enough to be detected, one might thereby have a means of locating oil or gas in the ground. This is the aim of the "displacement logging" method.' In any case, the presence of a low resistivity zone will affect the reading of electric logs. Using conventional log interpretation techniques, one must be aware of this and, if necessary, correct for it. Whether correction or detection should be the goal will depend primarily on the magnitude of the effect. The type of log which is likely to be affected most is the induction log. The current pattern of an induction log is concentric with the borehole. Any concentric ring of low resistivity, therefore, will tend to become crowded by current lines. This zone of maximum current density will obscure the relative contributions to the current conduction by other portions of a bed making, for instance, the contribution of the virgin formation less significant and thus detracting from the value or the induction log as an R, reading device. The present note is intended to ascertain the maximum possible effect of a low zone in the extreme case portrayed by Fig. 1 on three commercially available types of induction logs, sc., 5 FF 27, 5 FF 40 and 3 F 60. Type 5 FF 27 or 5 PF 40 is currently run in conjunction with a 16 in. normal and SP log. This combination is gradually replacing the regular electric survey (two normals and one lateral) as a standard log in many areas. On the basis of the scheme of Fig. 1 (sharp boundaries between successive zones), the thickness of the low zone may be computed for various amounts of infiltration measured by the ratio of invaded zone diameter to hole diameter D,/d. Referring to Fig. 1, we can set up a material balance for the water displaced from the invaded zone proper and the water present in the low zone. Gas-metal heterogeneous reactions and zone-lrelting were sinultarneously employed to produce several high-purity irons with low interstitial contents in a levitating- zone melter. Successive zone-tneltitzg pusses were made in carious sequences of atmospheves which included prepuvified tank hy-drogeta, water vapor hydrogen, palladiuril-purified hydrogen, and vacuunm of 2 x 10-6 Torr. Different irons ranging in purity from 99.89 to 99.996 pct with residual curbon contents of 17, 8 to 10, and 3 to 5 ppm have been Drepared. No measuvable gradient in the residual carbon content was observed along the entire zone-melted length (6-10 in.) in I-ilz.-diameter bars. The absence of a carbon-concentration gradient in the solid indicates an apparent distvihution coefficient of 1, an unusual condition. Internal friction, solid-state extraction, and hot-hardness results indicate that the level of mobile carbon in a iron depends on the gas-metal heterogeneous reactions employed. Purification under an oxidizing atmosphere resulted in the immobilization of nearly all of the carbon present at leuels of 10 ppm or less. Continuation of purification in a reducing atmosphere veturued the carbon to a state of mobility which was aguin reversed by further purification in all oxidizing atmosphere. The immobilization of curbon at "vesidual levels " is believed to be associated with a strong interaction between carbon and oxygen atoms. frons with low carbon and nitrogen contetzts which did not exhibit a hot-hardness peak were produced after zone ynelting in vacuum. CARBON, nitrogen, and oxygen have strong and well-known effects on many properties of iron. These effects persist even at concentrations of 5 to 20 ppm. The intent of the present investigation was to establish procedures for the preparation of high-purity iron with concentrations of these elements in the range of 5 to 20 ppm and lower. The results reported here deal with the procedures employed to prepare high-purity iron, and with observations on the behavior of certain elements at "residual levels": particularly carbon. The details of the (levitating) zone melter in which the final purification steps are performed and the necessary control of the pertinent solidification variables have been described previously.1,2 MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES Commercial electrolytic iron was induction vacuum-melted and cast into 30-lb ingots. Melt additions and ingot analyses for carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen are noted in Table I. All ingots were melted in stabilized zirconia crucibles conditioned with one iron wash heat. Middle sections of the ingots were forged to 1-1/4-in. rounds, machined to 1-in.-diameter bars, then cut to 36-in. lengths. The zone-melting operations were performed on six iron bars (A to F) at a freezing velocity of 2 in. per hr with the freezing interface rotating2 at 200, 300, or 400 rpm. Liquid zones were passed through the bars in various sequences of atmospheres, Table 11, including prepurified tank H2, palladium-purified Hz, wet H2, and system vacuum of 2 x 1018 Torr. Wet-Hz atmospheres were obtained by bubbling palladium-purified Hz through water exhibiting a resistance of 3 megohms. This water was heated with a platinum-immersion heater and was degassed prior to use. Zone melting in a wet-HZ atmosphere resulted in oxidation of the elements which are oxi-dizable with respect to iron. Fine oxide particles were observed on the surface of the liquid zone, and were encased in the bar surface with the passage of the molten zone. Between each zone pass, the surface of the bar was removed by filing and deep etching; this was continued until the oxide formation ceased. The filings were magnetically separated and the residues analyzed by optical spectroscopy. These were especially high in silicon and manganese. Samples were removed from the iron bars, with few exceptions, following each zone-melting operation. A 0.08-in.-thick disc was cut with an Al2O3 cut-off wheel at a point 1/2 in. above the beginning of freezing. Material from each disc was used for hot-hardness measurements, resistivity-ratio measurements, and carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen analyses. Analyses for most other elements were

Measurements made with starch ~~~~s indicate that the Presence of starch serves to depress the streaming potential of a clay mud system. Measurements with pure starch slurries show that the addition of NaCl or CaO reduces the streaming potential significantly. The addition of NaOH, however, causes only a minor reduction in potential even when there are large changes in mud resistivity. INTRODUCTION In their excellent study of the streaming potential, Hill and Anderson' proposed that the presence of conductive solids within the filter medium will reduce the generated potential. This theory was demonstrated with measurements on shaly sandstone cores having various "b" factors; the cores with the higher negative b factors showed markedly lower potentials. (The factor b was originally defined by Hill and Milburn2 in an expression relating the resistivity of a shaly sandstone to the resistivity of the interstitial water: log F, = log F,, + b (log 100R,)'. 'he factor b, therefore, is a measure of the contribution of the conductive solids to the total conductivity of the sample. It has been found experimentally to be directly related to the amount of chemically exchangeable ion per unit pore volume.) In the logical extension of this hypothesis to the streaming potential created by filtration through mud cakes, they suggested that the presence of nonconductive starch in a drilling mud would have the opposite effect; i.e., it would cause the streaming POtential to be increased. The high streaming potentials that they observed with lime muds were attributed to this cause. A cross-plot of some of their results which are relevant to this discussion is given in Fig. 1. The lime-mud curves and untreated-mud curve are taken from curves given in their paper. The gyp-mud line was estimated from their statement that the measured streaming potential for gyp muds in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 ohm-m was approximately 18 mv/1,000 psi. These gyp-mud potentials were the lowest that they reported for any of the bentonitic-clay muds, and were the only ones which were less than the untreated-mud potentials. This very low streaming potential of gyp muds has also been observed in field studies.' By way of comparison, a U. of Texas publication4 gives the approxi-ate compositions for lime and gyp muds shown in Table 1. These materials are added to a bentonitic-clay mud base. It can be seen that both of these muds contain significant amounts of calcium salts and that the gyp mud has the higher concentration of starch. It would appear from this and from the data shown in Fig. 1 that starch may well be the cause of a streaming-potential reduction, rather than a potential increase. EXPERIMENTAL A series of streaming-potential experiments has been performed using a cell of a design similar to that reported by Wyllie.5 Calomel electrodes were used in both the mud slurry and the filtrate. Pressure in the cell was generated with high-pressure nitrogen. The primary objective of the investigation was to determine the effect of starch on the potential. Five different slurries were made which ranged in composition from untreated ben-tonitic mud (Baroid Aquagel) to a pure starch suspension (Baroid Im-permex). The intermediate slurries were prepared by mixing together a 9-lb/bbl clay mud with a 12-lb/bbl starch suspension in the ratios 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1. When starch was used alone, it was necessary to use an 18-Ib/bbl mixture, since leaner mixtures would not form a suitable filter cake. The clay mud used in the experiments was aged for three months before use. In addition to this series of measurements on the starch-clay mud mixtures, other experiments were performed to determine the effect on the potential of the absolute starch and Aquagel concentration, and the effect of adding various chemicals. A pulsed high-energy neturon-induced spectral logging tool has been built and field-tested. The reaction of deuterium on tritium is used to generate pulses of 14-Mev neutrons. By detecting only the prompt gamma rays produced by neutron inelastic reactions in the formation, the presence and relative abundance of carbon, oxygen, calcium, silicon and other important elements may be ascertained from a gamma-ray spectrum. Gamma-ray spectra obtained in a shallow test well and in experimental field use show that it is possible to identify formations and their contained fluids. INTRODUCTION The penetrating gamma rays from naturally occurring radioactive elements in subsurface formations have been used for a number of years in well logging as a means of characterizing and distinguishing strata. Still another nuclear logging method which has been employed for some years consists of the bombardment of strata with neutrons and the measurement of the number of gamma rays produced by neutron capture reactions involving elements in subsurface strata.' Since one of the principal elements entering into capture reactions is hydrogen, the latter procedure essentially results in a hydrogen log, whether the hydrogen be in combined form in either oil or water; thus, the log gives an indirect measure of porosity. These methods, with various refinements, have been developed to such an extent that they have become routine procedures in formation evaluation. Neither gamma-ray logging nor conventional neutron logging, however, yields sufficient information to permit unequivocal identification of the mineralogic composition of formations, and neither method gives information which may be used for the positive identification of hydrocarbons in strata. Accordingly, a number of efforts have been made in recent years to gain additional information from nuclear logs. Brannon and Osoba have shown that it is possible to identify naturally occurring radioactive elements in subsurface formations by spectral analysis of gamma rays emanating from these elements. Such an identification is of value in the characterization of strata. A simplified form of spectral analysis of gamma radiation resulting from neutron capture reactions between elements in earth materials and bombarding neutrons has been used with some suc- cess under favorable conditions to differentiate between petroleum and water. This method relies upon the relatively high energy of gamma radiation from neutron capture by chlorine and, in effect, furnishes a chlorine log. In areas in which interstitial water is of sufficiently high salinity, this log can give valuable information on water saturation and, thus, indirectly on hydrocarbon saturation. Still another approach to obtaining more information by nuclear techniques is "activation logging", in which certain elements yield short-lived radioactive isotopes on neutron activation and, thus, can be detected by gamma-ray spectral analysis. From the standpoint of determining by nuclear logging methods the mineralogic composition of strata and the presence or absence of hydrocarbons, it is essential that information be obtained on the presence and relative amounts of several elements such as carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, calcium, silica and others. Some elements, such as hydrogen, chlorine and sulfur, can be determined by spectral analysis of gamma radiation resulting from neutron capture reactions."" Others — carbon and oxygen, for example — do not enter readily into capture reactions but do yield gamma rays of characteristic energies from inelastic scattering reactions with high-energy neutrons. Accordingly, the latter reactions are of particular interest as a means of identifying hydrocarbons in subsurface strata. Several years ago it was recognized that information requisite to the identification of subsurface strata and of contained fluids could be obtained by pulsed operation of a subsurface neutron generator and associated gamma-ray detector. It was contemplated that pulsed operation would be effective in discriminating in time that gamma radiation which results predominantly from inelastic scattering reactions from that gamma radiation arising from neutron capture reactions. Accordingly, research was continued and construction of such a device was initiated. Although many problems were encountered, they were solved successfully. The following sections describe the tool which has evolved, its performance and the results which have been obtained with it to date. THEORY OF OPERATION OF NEUTRON-INDUCED GAMMA-RAY SPECTRAL LOGGING TOOL THEORY OF INDUCED NUCLEAR REACTIONS Of fundamental importance is the fact that an element, when bombarded with neutrons, emits gamma radiation of energy characteristic of that element. The development of cube-on-edge secondary re crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon the ability of inclusions, such as manganese sulfide, to restrain nomal grain gvowth. The ability of inclusions to perform this function is shown to depend upon their size and distribution. The desired uniform dispersion of many small inclusions is obtained by controlling the cooling rate from above the solution tempmature of the inclusions or, alternatively, by drastic 'quenching from above the solution temperature followed by heat treating at a lower temperature. The development of the cube-on-edge secondary recrystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon both establishing the proper primary recrystallization texture and having inclusions to restrain normal grain growth. It has been suggested that the first requirement is met with a texture which, though weak, is near (110)[001]. A mechanism for secondary recrystallization originally proposed by ielsen' is consistent with the presence of this primary texture. It is visualized that a secondary grain appears where two adjacent grains happen to be sufficiently similar in orientation to be capable of behaving as a single large grain. This pair of grains will grow at the expense of its smaller neighbors as a consequence of its having lower grain boundary free energy. Other explanations of the origin of the secondary recrystallization texture have been offered,' and it can be concluded that the mechanism is not fully understood. Nevertheless, it is apparent that operationally the necessary primary recrystallization texture is obtained simply by interposing an anneal during the cold reduction to final gage. The role of inclusions in the development of the secondary recrystallization texture has been demonstrated by May and Turnbull4 in a comparison of a high-purity heat and a heat containing manganese sulfide. They showed that the driving force for secondary recrystallization is inversely proportional to the diameter of the matrix grains and that the function of the inclusions is to maintain a small matrix grain size. Other inclusions, such as various sul- fides,')' silicon nitride,8 and vanadium nitride,' titanium carbide,'' and vanadium carbide," have been shown to be effective in promoting secondary recrystallization to the cube-on-edge texture. There is also evidence that silica inclusions in Si-Fe strip made by powder-metallurgy techniques perform this function.' This report is concerned with the second of the two requirements for secondary recrystallization, namely the importance of the metallurgical control of the size and therefore number of inclusions. While the concepts involved are simple, they are fundamental to the making of this material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A heat containing 3.27 pct Si, 0.026 pct S, 0.06 pct Mn, and 0.004 pct C was made in an air induction furnace from electrolytic iron, 98 pct ferro-silicon, electrolytic manganese, and iron sulfide. The heat was divided between graphite and baked-sand molds with a cavity 2-5/8 by 5 in. and with walls 2-3/4 in. thick. Slabs, 1 in. thick and 2-5/8 by 5 in., were cut from the ingots and hot-rolled either in the as-cast condition or after one of the heat treatments described later. After pickling, the 80- to 100-mil-thick hot-rolled band was, unless otherwise noted, heat-treated for 5 min at 900°C before being cold-rolled to 25 mils. After a heat treatment of 1 to 3 min at 860°C, the strip was cold-rolled to 12 mils, the final thickness. The percent cube-on-edge texture was determined by dividing the maximum torque as averaged from four samples by the maximum torque of a 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe single crystal having the (110) plane in the plane of the sample. The torque measurements were made in a field of 1000 oe on 1-in.-diam disks. A technique has been developed for carrying out normal freezing experiments with a current density of 2000 amp per sq cut passing through the solid-liquid interface. The equation relating the effective distribution coefficient to the equilibrium distribution coefficient in electric field-aided solidification, originally developed by Huckc et al.,1 has been modified for the case of concentrated solutions. Preliminary experiments on the Sn-Bi system give qualitative agreement with the equation. The data are analyzed by a slightly novel use of the normal freeze equation which allows one to determine the effective distribution coefficient more easily. Very extensive mixing in the liquid was found at these high current densities and it is postulated that the mixing results from a vertical component of the magnetic Lorentz force generated by the electric current. In the search for techniques of obtaining ultrahigh-purity metals the inefficient but very effective technique of electrotransport has received little attention. Electrotransport is most effective in the liquid state and a natural application, therefore, is to apply an electric field across the liquid zone of a zone-melting experiment. The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of an electric field upon solidification of metals, so that the usefulness of electrotransport in such solidification experiments as zone melting could be determined. In zone-melting and normal-freezing experiments it is difficult to achieve complete mixing in the liquid in the immediate vicinity of the solidifying interface. Consequently a solute build-up will occur at the interface in the portion of the liquid where complete mixing does not occur (an equilibrium distribution coefficient, ko, less than one, and unidirectional atom motion will be implied throughout). This local solute build-up produces a corresponding rise in the solute concentration in the solid so that the ratio of the solute concentration between the solid and the bulk liquid is larger than the equilibrium distribution coefficient. This ratio is defined as the effective distribution coefficient, k,. The differential equation describing the solidification process may be derived by applying the continuity equation to an expression for the net solute flux at the interface. The solution to this differential equation then allows one to determine the solute distribution in the liquid and the relationship between k0 and ke. One of the most useful solutions to this equation was first derived by Burton, Prim, and Slichter,' in which they assumed that a) the equilibrium distribution of solute was maintained on the plane of the interface, 11) the solute build-up ahead of the interface in the liquid disappeared at a distance 6 from the interface, and c) the solute distribution in the liquid was invariant with time. The following well-known relation between ko and ke was then obtained, where R is the rate of solidification and D the diffusion coefficient of the solute in the liquid. This equation appears to correlate the data from a number of different types of solidification experiments very well. Application of an electric field across the solid-liquid interface can produce an additional flow of solute atoms as a result of the electrotransport. When the polarity of the field is such as to direct the electrotransport flux away from the interface the solute build-up may be diminished, even to the point of producing a solute depletion and a consequent ke smaller than ko. The quantitative description of this process and the resulting form of Eq. [I] was first given by Hucke et al.1* and then inde- where E is the electric-field intensity and U is the differential mobility, i.e., the velocity of the solute atoms with respect to the solvent atoms per unit electric field. Both authors follow the method of Burton, Prim, and Slichter in their derivation, the only difference being the additional electrotransport term in the flux equation. It has been pointed out1,3 that Eq. [2] predicts the possibility of a noticeable increase in the purification of materials by solidification in an electric field. We have recently found that many lots of Zircaloy-2 and -4 tubing tested in tension deform to cross section shapes that are "polyhedral" rather than circular. The noncircular cross sections seem to result from a circumferential variation in plastic proper -ties and, therefore, in texture. We examined the diffracted X-ray intensity from (OOOl), {1010), {ll20}, and {1011} planes parallel to the tubing surface around the entire circumference. Tubing that deformed to a circular cross section showed <5 pct variation in diffraction intensity around the circumference from any of these planes. Greater intensity variations were found for all the tubing materials that developed non-circular cross sections during deformation. In each instance the number of intensity maxima and minima was consistent with the number of sides of the &apos;polyhedral" cross section. THE effects of crystallographic texture on the mechanical properties of zirconium, zirconium alloys, and other anisotropic hexagonal materials such as titanium and hafnium have been intensively studied. If the natural crystallographic anisotropy of these materials could be controlled by selected fabrication operations, a material could be produced with a texture, or preferred orientation, in which the maximum strength directions are in the stress directions of the structure. The permissible stress levels of the structure could then be increased. Rittenhouse and Pickle-simerl have shown that highly textured Zircaloy-2 plate can vary from 52,000 to 70,000 psi in tensile yield and from 62,700 to 122,000 psi in compressive yield strengths as a function of specimen orientation. Similar texture effects have been observed in Zircaloy tubing, whose mechanical properties differ depending upon whether the tubing has basal poles predominantly radial or tangential and upon the mode of testing. These same texture effects might be troublesome if the texture in the tubing is not uniform around the tube walls. This paper is concerned with the effects of nonuniform texture on the strain behavior of commercial Zircaloy tubing. BACKGROUND Previously, various lots of commercial Zircaloy tubing were tested under selected stress conditions as part of a program to determine the four quadrants of the yield locus. One of the testing procedures was uniaxial tension and it is the influence of texture variations on the tensile deformation behavior of the tubing that is of interest here. The effect of texture on the strain behavior in tubing is very apparent from a uni-axial tensile test.2 This behavior is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 for three different tubing textures: 1) basal poles predominantly in the radial direction; 2) basal poles predominantly in the tangential direction, and 3) basal poles equally distributed between the radial and tangential directions. In the first example most of the grains are oriented for prism slip to operate to allow axial lengthening and diametral reduction of the tube. Reduction in wall thickness requires {1122} twinning, a more difficult operation than slip.* In the second example, the texture is such that *The singleCrystal analogy will be used quite often in this paper when strong texturesare being discussed. Diametral reduction requires twinning and again should be more difficult to accomplish. There is over three times as much diametral strain as thickness strain. An examination of the Pachucal and El Oro districts in July, 1920, although cursory and incomplete, disclosed facts of more than passing interest to the student of ore deposits; and inasmuch as the literature on these districts is limited and some of their features are little understood, a brief account may prove valuable as reconnaissance observations to be amplified by more thorough and competent observers in the future. Where no complete monograph of important mining camps has been published a partial presentation of the data is often useful, as it sometimes leads to fuller and more accurate descriptions, by stimulating discussion. The following notes are presented with the consent of A. F. Main, managing director of the El Oro Mining and Railway Co., whose fund of information and wide acquaintance with both districts alone made it possible to cover so much ground in a short time. I have also to acknowledge gratefully the aid of C. A. Lantz and D. S. Calland of the Santa Gertrudis and Real del Monte companies, respectively, in connection with permission to inspect geological features of interest in their mines. Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mex. This mining camp has been described by Ezequiel Ordonez2 and by A. F. J. Bordeaux.3 Reported to have been discovered in 1522, it has produced silver valued at between $250,000,000 and $375,000,000. Subsequent to the discovery here, by B. de Medina, of the patio process. in 1557, its production was increased, and now, using cyanidation, the output of the camp is nearly one-sixth of the production of the world. Topography and Climate The Pachuca district consists of a series of mountains and valleys, the minor features of which extend in an easterly and westerly direction and reach elevations of 8000 to 10,000 ft. In Haiti, the chain divides, one branch passing through Jamaica and the other through Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Misteriosa bank. Suess divides the West Indies into three zones: The first zone is entirely of volcanic origin and includes many recent volcanic cones. It includes the arcuate string of islands, which extends from Saba and St. Kitts to the Grenadines and Grenada. The western half of Guadeloupe belongs to this group. The second zone consists of a geanticline, of which the sedimentary rocks range from the Jurassic to the Quaternary, but consist chiefly of Lower Tertiary sediments. In the west it is broad, including the whole of the Greater Antilles; but in the east it is restricted to a narrow belt, which includes the Virgin Islands (except Anegada), Anguilla, St. Bartholomew, Antigua, the eastern part of Guadeloupe and part of Barbados. The islands that compose the third zone are flat and low. Like the second, this zone is broad in the west and narrow in the east; it includes the Bahamas, Anegada, Sombrero, Barbuda, and part of Barbados. Geologically, Florida and the plain of Yucatan may be regarded as belonging to it. Trinidad and Tobago, though geographically adjacent to the Lesser Antilles, are geologically a detached part of the South American continent. The crystalline complexes of northern Trinidad and of Barbados are a continuation, en echelon, of the crystalline axis of the promontory of Paria. The folded Cretaceous and Tertiary of the central and southern parts of Trinidad represent a continuation of the folded sedinlents of the Paria district of Venezuela. Self-diffusion in iron has been measured during rapid a-r transformations using a variant of the Kryukou and Zhukhovitskii diffusion method. The study was performed by thermally cycling iron foils (1 to 6 cpm) through the transformation (=910°C). Some foils have been subjected to over 1000 cycles and some have spent more than 15 pct of their total diffusion time in the process of transformation. The experimental results show that the a-r transformation has no measurable effect on self-diffusion in iron. The study is completed by a quantitative analysis of mechanisms which can affect the diffusion rate during the transformation. The analysis confirms the experimental results. SINCE diffusion is an important factor in many solid-state transformations, it is of interest to study how it is affected by the stresses generated during these transformations. Clinard and Sherby1&apos;2 were the first to make a study along these lines. They measured diffusion coefficients in Fe-FeCoV couples subjected to slow thermal cycling (1.5 cph) through the a-r transformation range. They found an enhancement of diffusion by a factor of about two. The purpose of the present paper is to report measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient of iron during much more rapid thermal cyclings (1 to 6 cpm) through the a-r transformation (-910°C). These more rapid cyclings produce higher strain rates during the transformation and should emphasize any possible influence of transformation upon diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL Iron foils, 25 to 35 µ thick, were cold-rolled from 99.92 pct pure iron and annealed in pure helium for 2 hr at 870°C; the resulting grain diameter was about 150 µ. Specimens 0.5 by 8 cm were cut from the foils and I7e55 was vapor deposited on one of their surfaces. A 38 gage alumel-chrome1 thermocouple was spot welded in the middle of one of the specimen long edges, Fig. 1. Two 38 gage chrome1 wires were also spot welded along the same edge on each side of the thermocouple; they were placed 2.5 cm apart and used for electrical resistance measurements. In order to prevent twisting and crumpling, the specimens were pinched between two quartz plates 0.1 by 1 by 7 cm and the assembly was close fitted into a 1 cm ID quartz tube. Four holes were drilled through the tube to let the 38 gage wires out: these were connected to the recording equipment by means of extension wires. 20-gage nickel wires fixed at both ends of the specimens were used to thermally cycle the foils by Joule heating. The above described device was placed in a 2.7 cm ID quartz tube which in turn was placed in a tubular furnace. Either a pure helium atmosphere or circulating hydrogen was used during the experiments. Specimens were subjected to thermal cycles between a minimum temperature To and a maximum temperature Tm at rates ranging from 1 to 6 cpm. This was obtained by maintaining the furnace at a constant temperature near the minimum temperature To and periodically passing an electric current through the specimen. Cooling was achieved by heat losses to the surroundings. The forms and periods of cycles were varied from one specimen to another; however, each specimen was subjected to one type of cycle only. The temperature and electrical resistance variations of the specimens were recorded as a function of time. The temperature curves were used for diffusion calculations while the electrical resistance curves were used to monitor the transformation and to determine its starting point and its approximate duration. Diffusion was measured by the method developed by Kryukov and zhukhovitskii3 and modified by Angers and Claisse.4,5 In this method a metallic foil is coated on one side with a radioactive isotope and the activity is measured periodically on both sides during the diffusion anneal.
