OF the five metals that now show the highest figures for annual tonnage production in the world, three (iron, copper, and lead) have been known and used by man for many thousands of years. The fourth (zinc) did not come into general use until the Middle Ages. Only the fifth (aluminum) is of, ultramodern origin, as far as mankind is concerned. Discovered in 1825, and first publicly exhibited at the Paris Exposition in 1855, aluminum was still so difficult to obtain that it was more expensive than silver, until the development of the dynamo provided cheap electricity and the development of the present electrolytic process for its production made it possible to make large quantities cheaply. Even today, the world production of aluminum is only about one per cent of the world production of iron, although about half that of copper by weight. The increase in production from a few tons to more than a million tons per year began with ,the development of the Hall-Héroult electrolytic process, which was first commercially operated by Mr. Hall's company, The Pittsburgh Reduction Co., in 1888. During the relatively short period of time that has elapsed since that date, it has been necessary to develop all the metallurgical and fabricating information required for the production of useful articles of the metal and its alloys, together with experience in both their production and their use, so as to be able to fit them satisfactorily into their proper places in our complex modern civilization. INTRODUCTION Cracks, crevices, holes, and fissures -- here collectively termed pores -- occur in all manner of substances in sizes from those evident to the unaided eye to those well below electron microscopic levels of detection. Naturally occurring materials having varying degrees of porosity are represented by wood, rock, soil, and mineral formations. Man-made materials that are porous include ceramics, sintered metals, catalysts, adsorbents, filters, and various compacted objects. The extent of their porosity greatly influences the hardness, rigidity, integrity, and general usefulness of such materials, and assessing both their pore volume and size is becoming increasingly necessary. Means by which this pore information can be obtained is the subject here. No attempt will be made to include all techniques and variations of them that have been suggested, but, hopefully, those of most general applicability will be described in sufficient detail to enable a potential user to judge their merit for a particular need. The results of pore measurements are made useful by relating them through other tests to performance criteria such as weatherability, water penetration, frost damage, oil recovery, strength, or thermal or electrical conductivity. These tests, of course, are outside the bounds for inclusion here. A pore is variously defined in dictionaries as "a minute opening", "a small interstice admitting passage of liquid", and "an interspace between particles". Clearly any object through which it is possible to find a continuous path from one side to the other either for a liquid or a gas must be regarded as porous. 13.5-1. Placer Deposits-Definitions. Placers are defined for this chapter as unconsolidated deposits of detrital material containing valuable mineral, and placer mining is defined as surface exploitation of placer deposits. Unconsolidated marine deposits containing industrial minerals, such as the very large pebble phosphate beds in Florida, pelletal phosphate beds in the Sechura Desert in northwestern Peru, oyster shell beds occurring at many places, and nodules resting in the sea floor, are not classed herein as placer deposits, though methods commonly used for mining placers may be employed for their exploitation. The natural processes that may form placers range from chemical weathering to stream, marine, and wind action, and combinations thereof, resulting in some degree of concentration of valuable mineral. One or more cycles of erosion and deposition may have occured. In relation to mining, placers include unconsolidated barren or near-barren overburden and underlying weathered bedrock. Placers of any origin subsequently may become drowned by the sea and then partly or entirely covered by marine deposits; or they may become covered with alluvium, eolian deposits, or lava. The mining of placer deposits for valuable mineral content usually is followed immediately by primary concentration using wet (rarely dry) gravity methods, succeeded by secondary concentration employing both gravity and other methods. 13.5-2. Classification of Placers. A fundamental classification of placers according to genetic types follows; some degree of concentration occurs during formation of all except saprolite and some moraines. 1. Saprolite and residual placers, consisting of mineralized rock decomposed in situ principally by chemical weathering; respectively either without change in volume, or slumped because of dissolution of some constitutent.

The remarkable phenomena exhibited by the aluminum alloy known as duralumin were discovered during the years 1903-1911 by A. Wilm1,2 and have been described by him and by others. 3 4 5 6 The unusual feature of this alloy is the fact, as was shown by Wilm, that it can be hardened quite appreciably by quenching from temperatures below its melting point followed by aging at ordinary temperatures, which consists merely f allowing the material to stand at these temperatures. The hardness is not produced by the quenching alone but increases during the period of aging, which may be from one to three days. Cohn3, 5 gives data showing the increase of hardness of duralumin during aging, after quenching in water from about 450° C. Upon annealing, the alloy so hardened by aging is softened exactly as is hardened steel. The composition of this alloy usually varies within the following limits: Copper, 3 to 4.5 per cent.; magnesium, 0.4 to 1.0 per cent.; manganese, 0 to 0.7 per cent.; aluminum, balance; iron (as impurities), 0.4 to 1 per cent.; silicon, 0.3 to 0.6 per cent. Its density is about 2.85. It is used only in the forged or rolled condition. This alloy has been produced for some years commercially and is in demand for the fabrication of parts for which both lightness and strength are required, such as for aircraft. Its tensile strength will average 50,000 to 60,000 lb. per. sq. in. (3515 to 4218, kg. per sq. cm.) after appropriate heat treatment, such as that described by Wilm.

ONE of the first mining areas to be developed in Arizona was that in the district centering about Clifton and Morenci. Traces of metals were first noticed by Henry Clifton on an expedition in 1864. Definite copper outcroppings were also reported in the following year by General J. H. Carleton when he led his troops into the district on an Indian raid. Actual mining operations were started in the early seventies. and the first smelter was finished in 1873. Two adequately financed companies acquired most of the property, and both commenced production about 1882. These were the Arizona Copper Co.. owned by a group of Scotch investors, and the Detroit Copper Mining Co., afterwards purchased by the firm of Phelps, Dodge & Co. Later the Shannon Copper Co. acquired and operated a number of claims in the northern part of the district. These three companies all operated underground, mines independently for many years.

Inclusions of MnS and Fe3C have been introduced into single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe to study their effects on recrystallization behavior and textures after cold rolling and annealing. The presence of MnS in (110) [001] and (111)[112] crystals inhibited primary grain growth and promoted secondary recrystallization but did not alter the texture significantly after annealing at 1200°C. The presence of Fe3C in (llO)[OOl] and (100)[001] crystals caused a refinement of the primary re crystallized grain size but did not promote secondary recrystallization. THE texture behavior of single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe during deformation and recrystallization has been studied by numerous investigators. The early work of Dunn&apos; followed by Decker and Harker2 involved relatively small cold reductions. More detailed studies of Dunn3&apos;4 and of Dunn and Koh5&apos;6 involved a reduction of 70 pct and recrystallization at 980°C for several crystals. Walter and Hibbard7 studied a greater variety of initial orientations and sought to relate the textures to those of polycrystalline material. Attention was focused on the nucleation process during early stages of annealing and on surface energy effects in studies by Walter and Dunn8 and by HU.9&apos;10 One of the most extensive investigations has been reported by T. Taoka, E. Furubayashi, and S. Takeuchi.11 Most of this work has been conducted using relatively pure crystals with minimal amounts of precipi-tate-forming elements such as carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen. Recently, however, S. Taguchi and A. Sakakura have observed that AIN precipitates can alter the recrystallization textures of rolled (100)[001] crystals.12 The present studies were initiated to determine effects of MnS and Fe3C precipitates on recrystalli-zation and grain growth behavior of rolled single-crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe. Both of these types of inclusions play significant roles in the recrystallization behavior leading to the formation of the (110)[001] or cube-on-edge texture in commercial grain-oriented silicon iron. It is well known that (110)[001] primary grains are formed by recrystallization of (110)[001] or (11 l)[ 112] crystals after cold reduction of about 60 pct or more. Crystals of these orientations, therefore, were selected for study of the effect of MnS in-clusions on grain growth. On the other hand, a major component of the texture of cold-rolled, polycrystal-line 3 pct Si-Fe is the (100)[011] orientation. The function of Fe3,C inclusions is of interest for this orientation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals used are listed in Table I and were obtained from commercial Si-Fe alloy processed to produce (110)[001] and (100)[001] texture by secondary growth. The cube-on-edge material was 0.59 mm thick. Suitably large (110)[001] crystals 25 mm wide were selected and their orientations were determined using an optical goniometer. Etch pits for texture determination were formed by a ferric sulfate solution. The other crystals used in the study with (100)[001], (100)[011], and (111)[112] orientations were obtained from sheet which contained large grains developed from secondary recrystallization by a surface-energy driving force.13 Most crystals had a (100) plane very nearly parallel to the sheet surface and the rolling direction could be selected readily. The same sheet also contained a few crystals with (111) planes parallel to the sheet surface, these also being a result of growth by surface energy. The crystals selected from the sheet were about 25 mm wide and 0.25 to 0.28 mm thick. As shown in Table 11, the crystals already contained about 0.070 to 0.10 pct Mn. The growing interest in the use of CO, in crude oil recovery increases the need for data on the effect of CO, on hydrocarbon physical properties. Data are presented on the solubility of CO, in various dead oils, the swelling changes in CO2-oil solutions and the effect of CO, on dead oil viscosity. This latter property shows the most pronounced effect, with viscosity reductions up to 98 per cent of the uncarbonated viscosities. An empirical method of estimating the viscosity of carbonated oils is presented. The apparatus and procedures used are described in sufficient detail to allow others to make similar studies. INTRODUCTION The effect of dissolved carbon dioxide on the swelling and viscosity reduction of specific hydrocarbon oils has been observed and recorded by a number of investigators.&apos;- me object of this paper is to offer a means of predicting these effects for crude oils free from natural gas, using the dead state viscosity and gravity of the crude oils. The CO, solubility and swelling of numerous crude oils were determined in a visual cell at various pressure levels. The viscosity of the oils carbonated to various pressure levels was then determined by measuring the pressure drop across a capillary tube. From these data, the physical properties were correlated empirically. The resulting correlations allow the prediction of CO, solubility, swelling and viscosity reduction if the dead state gravity and viscosity of the oils are known. SOLUBILITY AND SWELLING MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE A high pressure visual cell was installed in a constant temperature cabinet. A test gauge was attached at the top of the cell for pressure measurement, and a line was run through the cabinet wall to a wet test meter which was used for volumetric measurement of the gas. The first step in making a test run was to put the oil in the cell up to a level about half to two-thirds of the total volume. This required about 50 to 65 ml of oil. carbon dioxide was then bubbled up through the oil for a time during which the pressure of CO2 in the cell was kept above 800 psia. Saturation of the oil with CO2 at this pressure and ambient temperature was confirmed by slowly bleeding CO2 through a valve to the atmosphere. If the oil was completely saturated with CO2, bubbles of gas would form in the oil at the first small decrease in pressure. If the oil was under-saturated, no bubbles formed until the pressure was decreased to the saturation pressure existing in the oil. If this saturation pressure was lower than that desired, more CO2 was bubbled through the oil until the desired level was reached. After saturation at ambient temperature was completed, the cabinet temperature was adjusted to the desired level and the cell was allowed to reach temperature equilibrium. After temperature equilibrium was reached, the pressure was again decreased slightly, and the oil again checked for full CO2 saturation at the cell pressure. The pressure now had changed because of the difference in solubility of the CO, in the oil at higher temperatures and the expansion of CO2 as the temperature increased. The outlet tube from the cell was then connected to the wet test meter and the CO2 was allowed to flow slowly out of the cell and through the wet test meter at ambient temperature and pressure. The water in the wet test meter had previously been saturated with CO2 at ambient temperature and pressure by allowing CO2 to flow continuously through it lor a period of several hours. The gas flow was stopped at several pressures during the run and the cell was allowed to come to equilibrium; this made possible the measurement of solubility and swelling data at the intermediate pressures. The volume of the oil in the cell was recorded at each of the equilibrium pressures in order to obtain swelling data. DATA AND RESULTS The solubility of CO2 in the oil was calculated by the relationship V — V, where R. = solubility of CO, in crude oil, cubic feet of CO, measured at 60F and 1.0 atm/ bbl of dead state oil at the temperature under which solubility was measured, V, = volume of gas released from the cell between the saturation pressure and zero pressure, corrected to 60F and 1.0 atm, cu ft, V, = volume of CO: contained in the gas space above the oil, corrected to 60F and 1.0 atm, cu ft, and V, = volume of the dead oil in the cell in bbl at the temperature of the run. The volumetric data of Sage and Lacey&apos; were used to calculate V., from the volume of CO2 at high pressures. The swelling factor was calculated as where V, is the volume of the C0,-

THE Hopkinson bar has become a popular technique for the measurement of the mechanical properties of materials deformed at high strain rate. Maximum use of the equipment is made in the arrangement first used by Kolskyl in which a short compression specimen is sandwiched between two pressure bars and is loaded by a single pulse travelling through the system. The pressure bars are used both to apply the load to the specimen and as transducers to obtain continuous strain-time histories of three pulses, incident on, reflected, and transmitted by the specimen. The data measured by the pressure bars can be analyzed in terms of the stress/strain behavior of the specimen.2&apos;3 However, one of the assumptions of the analysis of the observed pulses is that the total stress and total strain do not vary significantly from point to point within the specimen at any given instant during the deformation process. Although this assumption is generally justified for very short disc-like specimens2 the situation is uncertain for larger specimens. For example, at small plastic strains (-0.01) Hauser et al.2 have some evidence of small flucations in the total stress within the crystal during deformation, even in relatively short aluminum specimens. In addition, Karnes4 has shown that the plastic strain, and by inference strain rate, is different at each end of a compression specimen tested in a Hopkinson bar, although the length of the specimen was not specified. Recently, the mechanical properties and the dislocation substructure have been investigated in single crystals of columbium5 (length 0.25 in., diam 0.19 in.), and copper6 (length 0.5 in., diam 0.5 in.) deformed at high strain rates. As part of this research program the assumption that the plastic strain is constant throughout the specimen has been checked by measuring the total dislocation density as a function of position in the specimen. Compression specimens of the same orientations and dimensions were tested as described previously5,6 sing a split Hopkinson bar. Since any discontinuity in strain distribution is most likely to arise during the initial stages of deformation the investigation was performed on specimens deformed to plastic shear strains of 0.054 (copper) at a strain rate 1.2 x l03 sec-1, and 0.06 (columbium) at a strain rate 1.5 X l03 sec-1. The orientation of the single crystals is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Thin foils were taken parallel to the most highly stressed slip plane, i.e., (111) in copper and (011) in columbium, using conventional disc techniques. The dislocation densities were measured using first order reflections with compensation for invisible dislocations.5&apos;6 In the copper single crystals the discs were randomly distributed throughout the cross section of the specimen. However, the dislocation density obtained from each disc was plotted vs the disc positions relative to the ends of the specimen. The results for the copper specimens are shown in Fig. 1. Clearly the dislocation density is constant throughout the main portion of specimen within the experimental error. The error bars on the dislocation densities correspond to a shear strain variation of 0.015 on the basis of previous measurements% ± of the rate of increase of dislocation density with strain in copper single crystals of the same geometry. Thus within this experimental error the plastic strain can be concluded to be constant within the specimen and the assumptions used in the analysis of the stress/time curves are therefore reasonably valid. The higher measured dslocation density near the impact end and the lower dislocation density at the bar end of the copper specimen is in agreement with the results of Karnes4 who showed that this strain/time curve rose to a maximum more rapidly at the impact end compared with the bar end. Hauser et al.2 have also pointed out that at small plastic strains (-0.01) the strain at the impact end of the specimen may be greater than that at the bar end. Thin foils taken from different points within the columbium single crystals demonstrated that the dislocation density could vary significantly within the specimen, see Fig. 2. Large areas of some thin foils up to 30 µ sq contained very few dislocations, see Fig. 2(a). However, in other parts of the compression specimen dislocation configurations like those shown in Fig. 2(b) existed over large areas (-30 µ sq). As a result, when the average dislocation density in a thin foil is plotted as a function of the position of the thin foil relative to the ends of the specimen, considerable scatter is observed, see Fig. 3. Recent experiments with II-VI compounds have shown that they hazle considerable potential for laser applications over a broad region of the optical spectrum. It may be possible to cover the spectrum continuously from 3200A (ZnS) to the far infrared (CdHg:Te) since HgTe is a semimetal. At this writing laser action has been observed in ZnS, Zn0, CdS, CdSe, CdS:Se, CdTe, and some of the CdHg:Te alloys. Of particular interest are those lasers operating in the zlisible and near ultraciolet regzons of the spectrum where detectors of high sensitivity are available. The lasing transitions in II-VI compounds are bound exciton transitions some of which have been identified in auxiliary experiments. High efficiencies and low thresholds for lasing hare been achieved almost exc1usively in plutelet-type crystals. The greater crystalline quality exhibited by the phtelet-type material is shown to result from the crystal growth habit. Phonon scattering- of conduction electrons to the ground-state exciton is discussed ill relution to Lou thresholds and high efficiencies for lasing- observed in the CdS:Se solid solutions. The first successful semiconductor laser operation was achieved in the III-V compounds. It is possible to choose a material in this group that will operate between approximately 0.65 and 8.5 . There are at least two reasons why one would like to have a laser operating at shorter wavelengths. First, it would be easier to experiment with a laser operating in the visible region of the spectrum, and also more desirable to have high-in tensity visible light sources. Second, the most sensitive photomul-tiplier detectors are available in the visible and near ultraviolet regions of the spectrum. It is known that II-VI compounds are direct-band-gap semiconductors and as such offer the potential of operating at any specified wavelength between 3200 (ZnS) and 7772A (CdTe). Light emission from II-VI compounds has been the subject of numerous investigations for many years. These investigations were all primarily concerned with noncoherent emission. It has been only recently that coherent emission from these compounds has been observed. To date, laser operation has been demonstrated in CdS, CdSe, and the solid solutions of CdS:Se, ZnS, ZnO, and CdTe. These compounds cover an appreciable portion of the optical spectrum from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. In considering laser applications, the use of lasers in communication&apos;s systems offers many desirable features. In any operation of this type one must consider the losses in transmitting the radiation from the source to the detector. Atmospheric absorption in the visible and near ultraviolet is variable and greater than in certain regions of the infrared. It might be concluded that for long-range communication systems an infrared laser operating in a spectral region that is coincident with a transmission window in the atmosphere would be preferable. However, one cannot overlook the possibility of operating a system in the sensitive region of a highly sensitive photomultiplier detector or other light-amplifying system. LASER CONSIDERATIONS To produce a source of coherent radiation it is necessary to achieve a population inversion. In the case of semiconducting materials it is necessary to raise the electrons from one energy state to a higher-energy state relative to it. In semiconductors, this population inversion can be achieved by three different techniques: 1) Current Injection. This technique uses a p-n junction biased in the forward direction. Large numbers of electrons are injected from the n region into the p region, and recombination occurs close to the junction. An inverted population is obtained in this region and the recombination radiation propagates parallel to the junction. This type of pumping has been used in the GaAs junction-type lasers but has not been successfully employed in the II-VI compounds. 2) Optical Pumping. In this case, one uses photons to obtain a population inversion by exciting electrons to higher-energy states. The pump sources are flash lamps or arc lamps and, occasionally, other laser sources when such sources have the appropriate energy for exciting the electrons. The disadvantage of this type of pumping is that flash lamps put out a rather broad spectrum of radiation, whereas the laser material has a rather narrow region of absorption. This results in an inefficient process. Laser sources provide efficient pump sources but the number of usable wavelengths is limited. 3) Electron Beam Pumping. In this technique, the laser sample cavity is bombarded with electrons having energies in the range from approximately 10 to a few hundred kv. The bombarding radiation excites electrons from valence to conduction band states in the semiconductor, giving rise to an inverted population. This type of pumping has been used successfully in several 11-VI compounds.

The removal of hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors from iron ores becomes of interest when a duplex flotation process is considered for upgrading, when a pelletizing process is considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid or a soap collector, or when a disposal of froth products from cationic silica flotation is of environmental concern. Ozone can oxidize organic compounds rapidly, thereby removing the hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors. Ozone is widely used for treating and purifying drinking water, waste water treatment, and for chemicals processing (Murphy and Orr, 1975; Rice et al., 1980). Its uses in metallurgical operations, however, are very sparse (Allegrini et al., 1970; Chernobrov and Rozinoyer, 1975; Ishii et al., 1970; Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985; Matsubara et al., 1978). Yet, its high reactivity and the absence of potentially hazardous byproducts become of interest in destroying flotation reagents adsorbed on mineral surfaces or remaining in mill water for recycle or for discharge. Duplex Flotation A duplex flotation process, as applied to oxidized iron ores, would involve a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process has been used in the Florida phosphate fields. Fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates. A combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho, lime and alkali phosphate, or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, has therefore been proposed. In a previous article (Iwasaki et al., 1967) , the use of activated carbon was found to be effective in removing fatty acid coatings both in the duplex flotation and the pelletizing processes. The use of ozone offers another approach to the removal of fatty acid coatings from iron oxide surfaces. To investigate the possible application of the duplex flotation process, a specularite ore from Michigan analyzing 36.5% iron was used. A 600-g (1.3-1b) sample was ground in a laboratory rod mill together with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of sodium silicate to -150 µm (-100 mesh). This was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation cell, and deslimed four times at 20 µm (quartz equivalent). The deslimed pulp was transferred to a laboratory conditioner, diluted to 40% solids, and conditioned with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of soda ash and 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of oleic acid. The conditioned pulp was then transferred back to the Fagergren cell, floated until barren of froth, and the rougher froth product was returned to the cell and cleaned. The results are presented in Table 1. The cleaner concentrate at this point analyzed 45.3% Fe. The cleaner concentrate coated with fatty acid was transferred to a 2-L (0.53-gal) beaker. While the pulp was agitated with a glass T-stirrer, ozone was bubbled into the agitated pulp for 15 minutes at a rate of 10 mg/min (0.00035 oz per min) ozone (250 g/t or 0.5 lb per st 03 feed). It was observed that the pulp ceased to froth after about 10 minutes. The amine flotation of siliceous gangue from the ozonated pulp was carried out first by conditioning with a dextrin, a commonly used starch depressant for iron oxides. This was followed by flotation with a stage addition of an ether amine at increments of 100 g/t (0.2 lb per st). Three stages were required to float the siliceous gangue to near completion. The three froth products were combined and cleaned twice. When the cationic flotation Rougher, Cleaner 1 and Cleaner 2 cell products were combined, an iron concentrate analyzing 64.5% iron was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 72.8%. Pelletizing Fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully in northern Michigan mills. But at other locations, fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates proved so undesirable in agglomeration that other methods of concentration had to be sought. For example, a sinter mix containing iron ore concentrates upgraded by fatty acid flotation resulted in decreased productivity. This occurred because the micropellets of particles with the hydrophobic coating are less tolerant of moisture. Thus, the bed permeability is lost (Beebe, 1965). The agglomeration of concentrates obtained by the fatty acid flotation alone, and the hydrophobic coatings destroyed by ozonation or by the duplex flotation process, is not expected to cause any difficulty since the surfaces of the concentrates would be hydrophilic. Removal of the fatty acid coating with activated carbon, indicated by the loss of floatability, was shown to restore the decrepitation temperature of wet balls during drying cycle (Iwasaki et al., 1967). Disposal of Cationic Silica Flotation Froths Recent demands of iron blast furnaces place the silica content of the magnetic taconite pellets at about 5%. Conventional process for magnetic taconite involving fine grinding and magnetic separation often produces magnetic concentrates analyzing in excess of 5% silica. This is due to the presence of the middling grains of siliceous gangue and magnetite. Cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates (DeVaney, 1949) may be used to reduce the silica content. But the amine coating on siliceous gangue becomes of environmental concern when the flotation tailings are discarded in tailing ponds.

The morpho1ogies and orientation relationships of the phases in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems were examined by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. In each alloy the "transition" from the lamellar to the fibrous morphology was found to be one of scale, not of type. The minor phase in both systems exhibited certain well developed facets which were not affected by changes in the ingot solidification rate. The crystallographic relationships displayed by the pairs of phases in both systems were also insensitive to the growth rate. In the Sn-Zn alloy, the unique relationship of: growth direction - II [1201 Sn - II [01101 Zn and ribbon interface plane 11 (101) Sn 11 (7012) Zn was determined. The Al-Al3Ni alloy phases did not possess any particular orientation relationship, though the Al3Ni phase invariably grew in the [010] direction and exhibited the same set of facet planes. These results are discussed in relation to current eutectic growth theories and explanations of the "lamellar to fibrous transition". THE lamellar to fibrous transition that occurs in many eutectic alloys has been the subject of considerable speculation and experimental study. In some alloys it can be induced solely by an increase in the solidification rate,&apos;-3 whereas in others the transition supposedly occurs only if the lamellae are forced to grow out of the overall ingot growth direction.4-6 he cause of this latter type of transition has been attributed to deviations of the lamellae from their low energy habit planes;4&apos;5&apos;7 fibers are produced because the sustaining force for lamellar growth (a low energy boundary) is destroyed. Implicit in these explanations is the assumption that fibers are circular in cross-section and completely lacking in low energy inter-phase interfaces. The "natural" growth rate dependent transition has been studied less thoroughly although Tiller8 has attempted a theoretical explanation of it. Tiller&apos;s arguments are not completely satisfactory9 but his suggestion that the relative undercoolings of the solid/liquid interface for lamellar and fibrous morphologies are growth rate dependent cannot be totally discounted; it is possible, for instance, that the relative interfacial undercoolings could alter and produce the observed morphology change if the orientation relationships between the phases and the associated interphase bound- ary energies were sensitive to growth rate. Salkind et al." have reported finding a change in the orientation relationships in the A1-A13Ni system accompanying the lamellar to fibrous transition, but contradictory evidence has also been reported for this3&apos;" and another system,12 so the position remains unclear. In an attempt to clarify matters a study was made of the "lamellar to fibrous" transition in the Sn-Zn and A1-A13Ni eutectic systems; the morphologies of these two selected systems are quite similar when viewed by optical microscopy. In the present research the morphologies and morphology changes were investigated by electron microscopy. The orientation relationships existing between the eutectic phases were also determined for both morphologies in both eutectic systems. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials and method of alloy preparation and ingot solidification for the Sn-Zn system have been reported previously.2 In this investigation nine horizontally grown ingots of the highest purity (99.9997 pct) were used. The temperature gradient in the melt was not intentionally varied and was approximately 10°C per cm. Seven growth rates between 1.3 cm per hr and 20 cm per hr were imposed. The A1-A13Ni alloys were prepared from "Spec. Pure" nickel and 99.995 pct aluminum by melting the components in an open alumina crucible and casting the melt into the cold graphite mold. Six ingots of the Al-Al3Ni alloy were unidirectionally solidified at growth rates from 1 cm per hr to 12 cm per hr under high purity argon. A typical ingot was 20 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 0.75 cm to 1.5 cm thick. Samples taken from the bars at positions 12 cm from the nucleation end were examined by conventional orthogonal-section metallo-graphic techniques. When required, samples were mounted for X-ray diffraction analysis using the Laue back-reflection technique with a finely focussed X-ray source. The surfaces of the A1-A13Ni specimens were prepared by mechanically polishing them down to the 1 µ diamond pad stage followed by an electropolish in 80/20 methanol/perchloric acid solution at 0°C and 20 to 30 v. The Sn-Zn specimens were repeatedly polished on an alumina pad and etched in hot dilute (2 pct) nitric acid until the diffraction spots were found to be sharp. Thin films of the alloys were prepared for observation in an electron microscope by spark machining thin discs (0.03 to 0.04 in. thick) from longitudinal and lateral sections of the bars and elec-trolytically thinning them via a jet polishing technique. For the A1-A13Ni eutectic alloy, an 80/20 mixture of ethanol/perchloric acid at 40 v and 20°C was found to be satisfactory. A solution of 70/20/10 methanol/perchloric acid/butylcellosolve at 25 v and 20°C was used on the Sn-Zn alloy. For the former alloy the jet nozzles (cathodes) and the disc clamps were of aluminum;

The self-diffusion of sodium in two sodium silicate liquids was measured in the temperature range 850" to 1500°C by the capillary-reservoir technique. Radioactive Na 22 was used as the tracer. The total count and autoradiographic methods were used for determination of the total Na 22 depletion and diffusion profiles of the dqy-used specimens. The diffusion coefficients obtained by the autoradiographic technique are slightly smaller than those obtained by a total count method. Error analysis of the two methods suggests that more confidence be placed in the results of the total count method. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of the existing activated rate process theory. The activation energy for diffusion was shown to decrease markedly as the temperature increased. This was attributed to a variation in the heat of activation with temperature, probably related to a change in the distribution of anions associated wilh the cation. In terms of a model, suggested for diffusion in liquid silicates, differences in the aclivation energies for diffusion and electrical conduction may arise from the effect of the electric field applied in conduction measurements. It is generally accepted that liquid silicates consist of cations and an equilibrium distribution of complex anions determined by temperature and composition. Transport properties in molten silicates are of interest, not merely because of their relevance to the kinetics of pyrometallurgical reactions and glassmak-ing processes, but also because they are useful to development of the theory of such ionic liquids. Self-diffusion is one such transport process that may, if studied for liquid silicates of widely varying compositions, indicate structural changes through changes in the activation energy for diffusion. The self-diffusion of calcium, silicon,&apos; sulfur: aluminum, 4 and oxygenS in lime-alumina-silica melts and of iron6 in molten iron silicates have been measured. Unfortunately, the errors in some of the reported activation energies for diffusion are too large to allow firm conclusions concerning structure and the mechanism of the diffusion process to be drawn. The research reported here was a study of the self-diffusion of sodium in liquid sodium silicates. The soda-silica system was chosen since: i) a reasonable composition range can be covered in the binary system at moderate temperatures; ii) suitable isotopes of sodium (radioactive Na 22 and NaZ4) can be obtained; iii) data on the electrical conductivity and viscosity of sodium silicate liquids are available. However, the range of composition actually used in diffusion experiments was limited, to 20 to 35 wt pct soda, by the relatively high viscosity of silica-rich compositions and by evaporation of soda from basic melts. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The capillary-reservoir technique was used, wherein a radioactive tracer, Na 22, incorporated in the capillary melt, was allowed to diffuse out of the platinum capillary tube into a large reservoir of silicate liquid containing a chemically identical melt, but without radioactive tracer. After a specific diffusion time, both the total depletion in the tracer concentration and concentration-distance profiles of the diffused samples were measured by procedures to be described later. The diffusion cell assembly was similar to that used by Koros and King.&apos; The temperature of the diffusion cell was measured with a calibrated Pt, Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple located at the center of the liquid reservoir. The same thermocouple was used to obtain the temperature profile in the reservoir. The temperature at the top of the reservoir was slightly higher (2°C) than that at the bottom, to minimize convection in the capillary tubes, which were placed, open end up, in the reservoir. Convection was not expected to be a problem since the length-to-diameter ratio of the tubes was about 12:1 and the maximum capillary diameter was 1 mm. The diffusion cell was heated in a molybdenum-wire resistance furnace, previously used by Koros and King, but somewhat modified. A Pt, Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple enclosed in an alumina tube and located near the furnace winding was used in conjunction with a preamplifier and Micromax proportional controller for temperature control, within 4°C, at temperatures near 1500°C. Before starting a diffusion run, the furnace was heated to the desired temperature and an alumina guide assembly for the capillaries was slowly lowered to within 2 cm of the liquid reservoir. The capillaries were thus heated to about the temperature of the bath. The run was started by lowering the assembly till the open ends of the capillaries were about 1 cm below the surface of the liquid. The run was ended by raising the assembly to about 15 cm above the liquid bath. Later, the sample assembly was slowly withdrawn from the furnace. Six diffusion samples were usually run at the same time. Three runs made with the open ends of the capillaries down were discarded because in the majority of these samples air bubbles trapped at the open end were observed. Some glass adhered to the outside of the capillary on withdrawal. This was carefully removed and used to check that the Na 22 activity in the sink remained at a low level. Materials. Nonradioactive sodium silicates were prepared by melting, in a platinum crucible, weighed quantities of sodium carbonate and powdered silica. The subject of Egypt, to use the words of perhaps the second of modern writers on the subject [Deodat. de Dolomieu, in Observations sur la Physique, etc., January, 1793, vol. xlii., pp. 41+, 108+; Abbe Rozier, J. A. Mongez, and J. C. Delametherie, Paris], is one which strongly excites our interest, and everything relating to it demands our respect. "Thus," he continues, "the Greeks appeared to the Romans," ..." thus Egypt appeared to the Greeks, and thus all three appear to us." This writer, in the three parts of the memoire given above, speaks of Norden as the modern pioneer of Egypt, and does not seem to have made original observations himself; nevertheless he seems to have rendered the same service to his authority that Playfair not very long afterward rendered Hutton. The limitations of a paper will permit little else than citations, but these are so numerous that, unless much compressed, they would supply a chapter of moderate size. The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and washability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections, were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected were statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size consist, yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

One of the greatest deterrents to more widespread use of manufactured lightweight aggregate is the fact that no industry-wide standards for its application exist. It is true that ASTM has specifications covering lightweight aggregate, but they are so broad as to be of little assistance in mix design work. Today even an engineer who has worked with one lightweight aggregate may be faced with re-education on his next light- weight concrete job if he is in an area served by another producer. Manufacture of lightweight aggregates has grown with the country, appearing in the patent literature at least as early as 1875, when a patent was issued covering use of burnt clay aggregate as an admixture in manufacture of artificial stone. The widely known Haydite came into the picture prior to 1920 as a result of work by Stephen J. Hayde, and there have been many others since who have contributed significantly to the growth of the industry and its technology.

Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation possibly may be thought of as a specialized subject, of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of a mineral producers&apos; staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture.

We would like to thank Mr. Mandolesi for his informative paper on rails from strand cast steel. The chemical and structural properties of the strand cast steel were of particular interest to us. We would like to supplement his excellent report with some of Inland&apos;s findings from our Caster with submerged nozzles and strands reduced in line from 7" x 7" to 5-5/8" square cross section. Inland has conducted extensive segregation studies on AISI 1049 steel - Fine Grain 0.50% carbon and 0.75% manganese. Based on approximately 80 heats, our normal segregation pattern results in analyses of .49% carbon in the center, and 0.50% carbon at the midway and edge position. The sulfur analysis averages .025% in the center, .027% midway, and .026% at the edge. Note the slight negative segregation between the center and midway position. This steel, being lower carbon and probably cast nearer the liquidus, resulted in less segregation than the 0.80% carbon rail steel.

The Albion phosphate-district embraces a territory about 4 miles wide and 6 miles long, in a northerly and southerly direction, situated in Levy county, Florida. The Florida Central and Peninsular railroad, running from Fernandina, a shipping port on the Atlantic, to Cedar Keys, on the Gulf of Mexico, passes through the center of the district. The post-office and railroad station is in the town of Albion. The physical features of the district present a series of white aqd whitish-gray sand-hills and ridges, rising about 130 feet above tide-water. The sand lies in a loose body, like that seen on the ocean beaches. In places the hills have the appearance of sand-dunes, such as are seen along the Platte river, in Nebraska. Beneath the sand are found the phosphate-deposits, which are partially exposed in places, but, for the most part, lie buried to a depth of 15 feet and more. In this district the phosphate is designated as " hard rock,"
