This publication describes development by the Bureau of Mines of a quality evaluation procedure for certifying the adequacy of production lots of Kroll process zirconium sponge the Bureau had produced for reactor applications. After the procedure was devised, the next step was to apply it in controlling the quality of one-half million pounds of zirconium sponge com-prising 259 production lots, called blends, originating at the Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau at Albany, Oreg. The Bureau concluded that the evaluation method developed was adequate and that by this method the zirconium blends having impurity levels or other property values outside specification limits were differentiated and thus were diverted from nuclear energy end uses. The research was performed under contract for the Bureau of Ships, Department of the Navy, and for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

During the search for deposits of soluble potash salts in the United States, carried on by the United States Geological Survey, much infor- mation was collected on the salt resources and industry of the United States. The more important features of the information thus gath- ered, compiled, and digested may be classified under five headings, as follows: 1. Geology of the salt deposits of the United States. 2. Theories relating to the origin and formation of salt deposits. 3. Chemical composition of saline materials in the United States, principally rock salt and natural and artificial brines. 4. Statistics of salt production in the United States. 5. Technology of salt production. The first four items are not discussed in this report, but their treatment will comprise a separate report published by the Geologi- cal Survey, which will supplement this report, relating to salt- making processes, and will describe comprehensively the salt resources of the United States. Persons desiring a copy of that report should apply to the Director of the United States Geological Survey, Wash- ington, D. C. In addition to the discussion of processes, this report gives a brief description of the more important sources of salt in the United States. This description has been abstracted from the much length- ier description contained in the report to be published by the Geo- logical Survey.

Reconnaissance studies of beach sands along the eastern part of the Gulf of Alaska were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine if any of these coastal areas warranted investigations as possible sources of valuable minerals. Because of difficult access and limited transportation facilities only a minimum of sampling, surveying, and camping equipment is utilized to obtain spot samples from key areas as well as information indicating the location, size, and character of the deposits. Such data were obtained from beaches located along approximately 247 miles of the Gulf of Alaska coastline during parts of the 1957 and 1958 field seasons. A total of 201 3-inch-diameter auger holes, spaced roughly at 1 mile intervals, were bored by hand methods to depths ranging from 3 feet to 27 feet; also 33 shovel samples were collected from selected localities. Samples were reduced to a rough concentrate in the field by panning; the rough concentrates were shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Juneau for further concentration and for petrographic and chemical analyses. Particular attention was given to the heavy-mineral content of the concentrates, although the types and relative amounts of rock-forming minerals were also determined. The reconnaissance indicated that, generally, the valuable mineral content of the beach deposits was too low to be of further interest except in the vicinity of Yakutat and Lituya Bays where erratic but possibly significant concentrations of magnetite and/or ilmenite were found. At Yakutat, about 20 miles of beachline extending southeasterly from Ocean Cape, yielded samplas containing from 1 pound to over 300 pounds of iron and from a trace to over 100 pounds of titanium dioxide (TiO2) per cubic yard of beach material. However, the higher grade samples represented local concentrations of minor importance. The general tenor of the Yakutat beach, as indicated by the airthmetical average of 27 auger-hole samples, is about 35 pounds of iron and 20.5 pounds of titanium dioxide per cubic yard of beach material. "A numerical model has been developed to study macrosegregation associated with liquid feeding in the Low Pressure Die Casting of A356 aluminum alloy wheels. The model of the wheel casting process has been implemented within the commercial CFD software package, FLUENT, using a User Defined Function (subroutine) to account for Si rejection based on the Scheil approximation. The model has been validated against temperature and microstructural data taken from a commercially cast wheel. The amount of segregation in the wheel has been shown to be significant in a couple of key areas. The implications of accounting for segregation include an improved ability to predict shrinkage porosity, fatigue performance and potentially also hydrogen porosity.INTRODUCTION The aluminum alloy A356 is widely used in the automotive and aerospace industries for various components. Examples include automotive wheels, automotive suspension components and airframe castings. Focusing on automotive wheels, Low-Pressure Die Cast (LPDC) A356 wheels offer significant design freedom and are far more aesthetically appealing to consumers than conventional stamped steel wheels. A356 wheels now dominate the market, appearing in all but the entry level offerings of the OEM manufacturers. However, they are typically over-designed to allow for the various casting related defects that degrade their mechanical performance. Thus, their potential to save weight has not been fully realized. Wheel manufacturers are under constant pressure to ensure their products meet strict mechanical requirements (ductility, fatigue, vibration), tight geometric tolerances and high aesthetic quality. The mechanical properties of the final product are determined by the microstructure – e.g. SDAS – and the defect population (porosity and oxides). Depending on their size and location, both porosity and oxides, can act as crack initiation sites reducing fatigue life (Caton, 2001; Jordan, 2010; Wu, 2015). There are a number of examples appearing in the literature (Atwood, 2000; Carlson, 2007; Lee, 2001; Yao, 2011) of numerical models that have focused on hydrogen-based pore formation that have demonstrated an ability to predict porosity formation and pore size distributions in geometrically simple castings. These models assume that the local gas species diffusion through the liquid metal to the pores is the rate-controlling factor of pore growth. Another common source of porosity is liquid encapsulation (Dantzig, 2009). As the pressure within the isolated liquid drops, pores form first due to the pressure dropping below the equilibrium partial pressure of hydrogen in solution and then second grow substantially as the pressure continues to drop falling below the vapour pressure of Al. One factor that can affect both mechanisms of pore formation is species macrosegregation, which has received comparatively little attention in die-casting."

Weak, layered, and fragile rock mass formation, if not supported properly, is subject to roof failure thereby affecting safety and productivity in underground coal mines. Though Central Mining Research Institute – Indian School of Mines Rock Mass Rating (CMRI-ISM RMR) based well-defined support design guidelines are established, still occurrence of roof failures in underground coal mines is a real matter of concern for mining engineers and researchers. Numerical modeling techniques are successfully used by several researchers by simulating rock mass condition for stability assessment of mine openings. The analysis becomes crucial in case of weak and fragile rock formation. The present research envelops the determination of 31 cases of rock load by CMRI-ISM RMR under different geo-mining conditions followed by the development of modified Rock Mass Rating (RMR), i.e., rock mass rating dynamic ( RMRdyn) by incorporating P-wave velocity as a new parameter. The rock load determined using RMRdyn and numerical models was correlated and found in close agreement. In addition, the deviation in rock load determined by all the three approaches, i.e., CMRI-ISM RMR, numerical modeling, and RMRdyn, was compared with the actual field data. The percentage deviation obtained in RMRdyn and numerical modeling is less compared to CMRI-ISM RMR.

A determinação de características microestruturais como base de controle de qualidade tem demonstrado cada vez mais a sua importância nos processos de aglomeração de minério de ferro. A linha de pesquisa do presente trabalho envolveu o desenvolvimento de técnicas de embutimento de pelotas seccionadas em resina condutora, de desbaste e polimento da superfície das amostras e emprego do microscópio eletrônico de varredura em conjunto com a técnica de Electron Backscattering Difraction. Por meio das técnicas empregadas de microscopia baseadas em parâmetros cristalográficos específicos, foram obtidas ilustrações forescatter e mapas de fases minerais ferríticas, silicatos e óxido de ferro que caracterizam a microestrutura de pelotas tratadas termicamente em forno piloto. O desenvolvimento desta metodologia promove subsídios para estabelecer futuramente uma relação das estruturas observadas em escala microscópica com as propriedades reconhecidas e mapeadas no produto final.

Devido ao fato que a exigência por menores teores de enxofre em alguns tipos de aços, torna-se interessante investigar a eficiência na dessulfuração dos materiais já conhecidos com matérias primas alternativas. Duas dessas novas matérias primas que podem ser utilizadas no processo de dessulfuração são o resíduo de mármore e a sodalita. Desta forma, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a eficiência de dessulfuração em ferro-gusa por misturas contendo resíduo de mármore, sodalita e agentes dessulfurantes convencionalmente utilizados. Os testes foram realizados a 1400°C, em uma atmosfera inerte (Ar) com agitação constante. Os testes experimentais mostraram que 50 a 90% da dessulfuração ocorreu em até 15 minutos. As misturas contendo fluorita foram os que apresentaram maior eficiência de dessulfuração. A adição de sodalita ocasionou uma queda na eficiência de dessulfuração.

A performance energética, bem como as propriedades estéticas, cor, reflexão e transmissão, são os motivos pelos quais estes vidros são aplicados na construção civil. Estes vidros planos com eficiência energética são produtos constituídos por uma lâmina de vidro tipo Soda-Cálcio revestida por filmes finos em escala nanométrica. Tais filmes finos são em sua maioria constituídos de ligas metálicas, metais puros e materiais cerâmicos, como óxidos e nitretos. As propriedades físicas e químicas de cada camada afetam diretamente as propriedades ópticas e a performance do produto. Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo das propriedades ópticas de filmes finos de Nitreto de Silício, depositados por Magnetron Sputtering Reativo sobre substrato de vidro Soda-Cálcio.

"The new Roasting Facility at Barrick’s Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, U.S.A. was developed to process 12,000 tons per day of refractory gold ore. The process consists of crushing, dry grinding, roasting, extensive gas purification, calcine quenching and leaching in the presence of activated carbon. The new plant is integrated into the existing Goldstrike facility, treating ore from both open pit and underground sources.The process design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Roaster facility was performed successfully over a 3% year period with peaks of 400 engineering personnel and 950 construction personnel supporting the project. The US$330,000,000 project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The commissioning was well planned and proceeded smoothly through a rapid start-up to achieve all primary goals within three months of the start of processing of ore.BACKGROUNDAs early as 1992, Barrick’s Goldstrike Mine, located north of Carlin, Nevada had indications of the ore becoming ever increasingly carbonaceous in nature. As the open pit and underground exploration programs proceeded to step out over the years that followed, the accumulative amount of carbonaceous refractory ore and tons had become significant. By 1997, 29 million tons of double refractory carbonaceous ore containing an estimated 11.6 million ounces of gold had been identified. By 2000 the resource had increased to 14.3 million ounces."

Novas ligas de Ti estão sendo desenvolvidas como uma alternativa para aplicação em implantes cirúrgicos e em componentes estruturais por possuírem propriedades atraentes em comparação à liga Ti6Al4V, com destaque ao menor módulo de elasticidade, menor citotoxicidade, maior resistência à corrosão e propriedades mecânicas similares, alta resiliência e elevada formabilidade. Este estudo tem como objetivo observar as características mecânicas de ligas Ti35Nb2Sn deformadas a frio e seguidas de envelhecimento. A liga foi laminada a frio com 80% de redução e envelhecida a 400 ºC por 48 horas. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, dureza, metalografia e análise das superfícies de fratura. A liga laminada apresentou uma maior relação de resistência à tração pelo módulo de elasticidade e maior ductilidade do que a liga envelhecida.

Procedures for detecting and locating seismic sources are adapted to the case of entrapped miners. During an emergency the entrapped miner is likely to generate seismic signals, by knocking against the walls of the shaft. With a seismic array station deployed near the disaster area, the seismic signals can be recorded. Two algorithms are presented for the location of the source from the arrival times of a seismic phase: The first algorithm produces one, most probable location, under the assumption of constant velocity of propagation of seismic waves in the medium. The second algorithm is similarly applicable, however without any restriction on the seismic velocities in the medium between the source and the array. While the first algorithm uses an analytic approach, the second one is based on a trial and error procedure. The second algorithm gives locations with arbitrarily high accuracies, depending only on the accuracy of arrival time measurements and on the compatibility of the true velocity distribution and the assumed velocity model. The algorithm is shown not to require under certain conditions direct .arrival time measurements, thus eliminating a potential source of errors in the location of entrapped miner.

Foundation pile driving hammers used in New York City in the past 100 years have been drop, steam, compressed air, diesel, and hydraulic. In 1992, the first hydraulic hammer in the New York City area was purchased by Norwalk Marine Contractors, Inc. from Junttan in Finland. It was bought because of its variable energy and ease of mobilization, not because of its higher transferred energy. Heller and Johnsen engineers instrumented hydraulic hammers on nine jobs. The measured transferred energy for the nine jobs was found to average approximately 80 percent. There is no clear consensus regarding the reasons for the hydraulic hammer being more efficient in delivering energy to the pile as compared to single-acting steam/air impact hammers. To minimize pile damage during installation, and to minimize footage overruns, an up-to-date version of the wave equation software that includes an efficiency value of 0.95 for hydraulic hammers is now used.

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a estratégia adotada para a migração dos sistemas de otimização de processo dos três Altos Fornos da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. O desenvolvimento dos novos sistemas é baseado no Plano Diretor de Tecnologia de Automação (PDTA) que definiu a arquitetura, tecnologias e elaborou o Framework como base das aplicações. Para a migração dos sistemas foi elaborada uma especificação detalhada de todos os módulos e funcionalidades existentes, permitindo dessa forma a criação de uma camada com as principais regras de negócios relativas ao processo para serem reutilizados em todos os Altos Fornos. Essa camada deu origem ao Framework dos Altos Fornos. Os resultados obtidos já podem ser vistos nos três sistemas migrados para a nova plataforma, com um alto desempenho e estabilidade, garantido dessa forma a segurança operacional objetivada.

Neste trabalho, nanopartículas de ferrita mista cobre-prata foram estudas como uma opção viável de material bactericida reciclável. As nanopartículas Cu-Ag foram sintetizadas pelo método de combustão em solução e caracterizadas via difração de Raios-X. Ensaios in vitro foram estabelecidos como meio de avaliação do potencial de interação e da taxa média de inibição nas cepas S. Aureus e P. Aeruginosa, usando o método de difusão em meio ágar líquido. Análise por densidade óptica mostrou as comparações de quantidades relativas das cepas que foram eliminadas ou inibidas através dos mecanismos físicos das amostras. Resultados preliminares foram comparados com trabalhos semelhantes na literatura, indicando que a eficiência antibacteriana do material depende tanto do contato das partículas com a membrana celular das bactérias quanto do tamanho médio de cristalito das ferritas.

A indústria de máquinas e equipamentos hidráulicos está manufaturando produtos com tolerâncias de ajustes dimensionais cada vez menores, visando o prolongamento da vida útil e o alto rendimento de tais componentes. Nesta perspectiva, é notória a necessidade de identificar as principais fontes de contaminação existentes nos fluidos hidráulicos, a fim de controla-los. A partir da coleta de amostras de um óleo hidráulico que passa por uma filtragem nominal e de um óleo hidráulico que passa por um processo de filtração absoluta, foi realizada a contagem de partículas, análise por fluorescência de raios-x, análise microscópica ótica e análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, para estas amostras. Com base nas análises realizadas, foi possível constatar a importância do processo de filtragem absoluta na redução dos níveis de contaminação do óleo hidráulico.

Este projeto tem como objetivo desenvolver o uso do transporte multimodal nas operações de entrega de produtos via cabotagem, para as regiões Norte e Nordeste, em sinergia de todas as usinas da ArcelorMittal no Brasil. O trabalho visa demonstrar os principais dificuldades e benefícios da utilização da cabotagem. O projeto foi subdividido em etapas de implantação, que se iniciou com um processo de contratação, envolvendo os fornecedores de cabotagem e serviços de ovação para as operações das unidades de Longos (Cariacica, Sabará, Itaúna, Juiz de Fora e Piracicaba) e de Planos (Tubarão) de forma conjunta buscando uma melhor condição comercial e contratos sólidos de atendimento, com foco na utilização das mesmas estruturas de terminais, portos, fornecedores e até containers. Foi estimada uma redução significante dos impactos socioambientais e dos custos de fretes para organização.

Crystallographic modifications and kinetics of solid-state phase trans-formations were determined for five rare-earth" sesquioxides--La2O3, Nd2O3, Sm2O3, Eu2O3, and Gd2O3. Oxides used for crystal modification studies were prepared by thermal decomposition of the following high-purity salts of the five rare-earth elements--carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, oxalates, and sulfates. X-ray diffraction patterns of the cubic and hexagonal oxides were indexed by a graphical method and patterns of the monoclinic oxides by Ito's method. The kinetics of crystallographic transformation were determined by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry. The kinetic data were interpreted using a shrinking sphere model. All of the transformations followed first order kinetics. Activation energies were calculated by application of the Arrhenius equation. These solid-state phase inversions were concluded to occur by a reconstructive transformation mechanism.
