"A number of coal mines in India are affected by fire. Most of coking coal reserves in the country are located in Jharia coalfield where more than 18 sq. km is in the grip of fire. Generally such fires are confined in areas near to our crops. About 37 million tonnes of coking coal are lost in recent yearsdue to fire and another 48 million tonnes are blocked in fire areas. Preventive measures adopted to control fires were only partially successful and the cost of such measures was exorbitant I Temperature of blast holes in fire area varies between 60 and 300° C or even more. Even after thorough quenching of holes with water, it become difficult to bring down the temperature below SO"" C. For blasting hot holes primary need is to select safe and suitable commercial explosives and detonating fuse and to measure hot hole temperatures. VWiOUs types of commercially available explosives including Nitro Glycerine bare, slurries, site mixed slurries (SMS), emulsion5 ,detonating fuses and detonators were tested to determine their thermal behaviour at elevated temperatures under field simulated conditions in the Copyright © 2000 International Society of Explosives Engineers 1993g - Studies on Safe Blasting Technique in Fire Area of Coal Mines laboratory and in hot blast holes in field . More than 50 round of blast were conducted in fire areas. NG base compositions and detonators were found unsafe at temperature above SO0 C andtherefore, they are not permitted to be used in hot holes. Slurries and emulsion are stable upto 1200 c. For blasting at temperature exceeding SO0 C a heat resistant gel/ solution was developed by the authors and is being used in number of fire areas."

The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.

The lining, together with the electrodes, forms the heart of the operation of a submerged arc furnace. Subsequent to a lining failure on M12 furnace during the early 1980s, Metalloys was active in investigating the concept of thermally efficient ?freeze? linings for its furnaces. The theory revolved around that, not only would, thermally efficient linings result in significant cost savings, but they would also last longer as a result of being subjected to less harsh operational conditions. After having proved the concept on the .smaller. furnaces, Metalloys decided to implement the concept on its largest submerged arc furnace, M12 Subsequent to having recovered from an impending failure of a lining installed in 1981 in M12 in the mid 1980s, Metalloys managed, through rigid lining management, to extend the life of this lining to 1999. At the end of 1999 the decision to replace the lining in the furnace with a ?freeze? lining was made and planning and design proceeded in earnest. This paper discusses the options considered in making the final decision. The features of the design of the lining are also discussed. Consideration is given to the furnace shell cooling system as a result of its importance in maintaining the thermal equilibrium in the lining. Note is made of the fact that the purchase of a .freeze. lining is an expensive exercise but that the time savings in the installation of the lining and the efficiency improvements during operation far outweigh the additional capital cost. The experience on M12 has been that the payback period of the marginal capital expenditure is less than three years. As a result of the opportunity to reline a furnace the size of M12 not presenting itself very often, the learning points from the installation of the lining and the operational advantages and disadvantages are significant. Finally, the point is made that the project had its pros and cons but overall the success of the project has been evident and, as such, the ?freeze? lining is likely to become the norm at Metalloys.

Many Engineers are skeptical and cautious about skin friction factors for the portion of drilled piers where temporary casing is used. This has led Texas engineers in many cases to eliminate skin friction values for the cased section, which necessitates deepening the drilled shaft to compensate for the loss in the cased section. This paper has provided field test data that supports inclusion of skin friction in the temporarily cased hole section as a contributing factor in total axial capacity as comparable to open hole shafts of the same diameter. Reasons for the resultant friction values are provided including; remolding of the cased clay section and the increased pier circumference necessitated by the oversized casing required for adherence to the engineers shaft diameter specification.

This report presents the results of six STATNAMIC loading tests that were carried out on four different pile types at the CALTRANS 280 Test Site (Bridge No. 34-46) in conjunction with the Tension Pile Test Program. The STATNAMIC testing was performed by Berminghammer Corporation at the request of the California Department of Transportation, Office of Geotechnical Engineering. Others performed the static tension (uplift) and compression loading tests which werecarried out on the piles tested using the STATNAMIC method. A summary of the STATNAMIC test results is presented and discussed, and the appropriate results are compared with the static test results

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. Nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) was found to be associated with the following grasses in the field: Agropyron dasystachyum, Agropyron smithii, Aristida purpurea, Oryzopsis hymenoides and Stipa comata. Uptake of fixed nitrogen was also demonstrated for these grasses. Two unidentified nitrogen fixing bacteria were isolated, one from Stipa comata and one from Aristida purpurea. Cynodon dactylon and Agropyron cristatum were successfully inoculated with the unknown isolate obtained from Stipa comata. The inoculated plants exhibited nitrogenase activity (C2 H2 reduction) whereas uninoculated controls gave negative results.

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

"Increasing demand for timely and accurate information about flotation plant performance requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant production. This trend has brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Such significant in-process inventories can be locked in diverse process equipment (bins, holding tanks, flotation cells, thickeners, pipeline, etc.) or in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, tailings, etc.). Practice has shown that boldly ignoring these in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation lead to unreliable metal balances thereby creating confusion in plant production planning and operational performance assessment. To this extent, the characteristics (physical bounds, spatial heterogeneity and residence time) as well as the available measurements (volume, density, humidity, mass, composition, etc.) of each unit/section found in a generic flotation plant are jointly reviewed with respect to the particular metal accounting issues they present. The daily and monthly metal accounting tasks are then reviewed together with possible methods for obtaining reliable inventory estimates including different procedures for end-of month reconciliation.INTRODUCTION Most of the cost reduction initiatives of the mining industry aim at improving capital efficiency and asset utilization. Among the possible paths through which these goals can be achieved are mine-to-metal optimization, real-time plantwide process control (Hodouin, 2011) and knowledge sharing databases (Bascur & Linares, 2006). However, the successful implementation and subsequent monitoring will ineluctably results in an increased demand for timely and accurate information. This more than often requires metal accountants to increase the scope and reporting frequency of plant metal production. A striking example of such scope expansion is the Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil (Anglo American, 2013) having a pipeline route of 525 km between the concentrator and the concentrate shipping area. Several other mining companies have also set an increased frequency for their key performance indicators thereby shrinking the metal accounting period from monthly to weekly and daily. Those concurrent trends have brought in-process inventory estimation at the forefront of metal accounting issues. Indeed, as illustrated in Figure 1, improving trading reactivity requires improvements in production planning which strongly impacts the requirements for reliable metallurgical accounting. Furthermore, practice has shown that boldly ignoring significant in-process inventories or the errors associated with their estimation can lead to unreliable metal balances. In other words, since metal balances are the cornerstones of metal accounting, some of the risks associated with important business decisions are linked to errors associated with in-process inventory measurements."

Caterpillar’s 797 327-t (360-st) mining truck is currently being tested at the company’s proving facilities. Mine evaluations began in the second quarter. The unit will be commerically available in North America in 2000 and worldwide in 2001. The new model is the largest of Caterpillar’s off high-way truck line. In addition, the company has replaced its 966F series II and 970 F wheel loaders with the966G and 972G models. 797 mining haul truck Caterpillar developed the 797 mining haul truck in response to mining companies seeking to reduce cost per ton in large-scale operations. The 797 is sized to work with loading shovels used in large mining operations. And Caterpillar will match the body design to the material being hauled, to optimize pay-loads.

Eight extinguishing powders KCI, were tested on five types of diffusion flames. The effect of flame temperature on the inhibition efficiency was investigated by varying the oxygen index of the flame supporting atmosphere. Inn addition a spectrographic investigation of powder flame dissociation products was carried out on the methane/air/ABC (NH4H2PO4) flame. Dissociation products for this flame included P0, PH, NH, and Na. It is concluded that the main factor to be considered in the efficiency of tie powder is the flame temperature Purple K (KHC03) was typically inefficient in low temperature flames and very efficient in high temperature flames. On the other hand, ABC (NH4H2PO4) was found to lose its efficiency at high temperature but to be quite efficient in the low temperature flames. The effect of temperature is offered as an explanation of the poor efficiency of Purple K (KHC03), against coal dust explosions as contrasted to the high efficiency of phosphate salts against coal dust explosions.

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNIIzarubezhgeologia, VNIIoceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of theRussian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deepsea drilling (leg 1-130),  thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

A macroscopic approach integrated with microscopic analyses for wettability characterization is presented. Wetting depends on 1) Contact between the dust and the fluid droplets, 2) Wettability of the particles by the wetting fluid, and 3) Wettability rate (due to low contact times). The goal of this paper is to show that the wetting rate is a significant factor in dust control. Samples from the roof, three different horizons of the coal seam and the floor were pulverized to less than 25 µm. Experiments were conducted with known wetting fluids to correlate surface tension and equilibrium wettability. Further analyses were performed in terms of surface charge (zeta potential), particle size, mineral composition, elemental composition, and quartz content. The surface tension reduction was also achieved by the use of chemicals and/or altering the temperature of the water. Two methods were used to evaluate wettability rates: a) near real-time comparison of wettability rates, and b) comprehensive evaluation of the intrinsic wettability rates. The data obtained provides meaningful insights towards the design of engineering controls for an economical solution to dust control in coal mines.

"Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

Casting is the most economical route to transfer raw materials into readily usable components. The economics of casting would be more pronounced and better realized, if there are no or limited necessary post fabrication treatments. Therefore, there is an urge towards near or net-shaped casting as there are significant advantages over conventional casting including reduction of component weight, excellent surface finish, higher strength and integrity of the as-cast parts, closer tolerance, and the ability to produce pore-free parts by controlling the solidification shrinkage. The concept of near or net-shaped casting is currently employed for both semi-finished products such as strip-casting and finished shaped casting, as in case of high pressure die casting or squeeze casting. The full potential of this process yet to be explored and is expected to be realized within the next 10 years, especially in case of strip casting. The current article discusses different near or net-shaped casting routes currently employed for fabrication of high integrity finished products with main emphasis on aluminum-silicon alloys. In this regard, attempts will be made to identify the key parameters during fabrication and highlight the importance of process control and optimization in fabricating premium quality cast products. A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micron-range particles that form paste-like, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake-flow control structure that allows expressed liquid from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned back to the liquid pool while maintaining high solids throughput. In order to provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids, and different slurry types), the cake-flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in both solids dryness and solids throughput.

The viscosities and the infrared spectra of the CaO-SiO2-MgO-CaF2(or Al2O3) slags were measured to enhance our understanding of the interrelationship among the thermophysical property, microscopic structure, and chemical thermodynamics of molten slags. The structural role of CaF2and Al2O3in the calcium silicate melts can be explained by a change of the degree of polymerization (DOP). The effect of CaF2on the viscous flow of molten slags is based on a decrease in the DOP by F-as well as by O2-ions and this was confirmed by the infrared (IR)spectra of the quenched slags. The effect of Al2O3on viscosity increase can be understood from an increase in the DOP by the incorporation of the [AlO4]-tetrahedra into the [SiO4]-tetrahedral units and this was also confirmed by the IR spectra. An amphoteric behaviour of Al2O3in the aluminosilicate melts could be correlated to the effect of ionic species of alumina, that is [AlO4]-tetrahedra and [AlO6]-octahedra, on the stability of silicate polyanions by taking the activity coefficients of slag components into account. "An introduction and case study of Mintek's latest generation of Milling Circuit controller, the MillStarTM with IES (Interpreting Expert System) is presented. This paper also describes as a case study its installation on a Southern African base metals concentrator plant which has demonstrated improved operation, greatly reduced variation in product quality, as well as increased capacity and availability of the circuit.In this case study, the MillStarTMw as installed along with several other enhancements, including hydrocyclone underflow monitoring, product particle size estimation and flotation circuit stabilisation. MillStarTM utilised the particle size measurement to control grind to within 2% of setpoint, all the while ensuring sump level control, density control as well as mill power optimisation. Mintek' s expertise in the modelling of tumbling mills allowed the development of a specialised optimising controller that ensured the mill was kept in the most efficient operating region.MillStarTM augments the automatic control with useful user interface features, such as on-line trends of any logged variables, historic data warehousing and retrieval and production summary reports.A novel feature that distinguishes the MillStarTMi s the IES (Interpreting Expert System). This is a feature of the software that works with the automatic control code to generate explanations for control actions made by the controller. Often complex control systems are mysterious in nature, reducing trust and eventually resulting in them being switched off. The IES method of exposing the heart of the controller has proved popular and is seen to have potential as a training tool. 314"
