The countries of Asia and the Pacific have large resources of diverse minerals. Australia and China have extensive mineralization that are commercially being exploited. The major minerals in Australia with known reserves adequate for both domestic demand and export markets include bauxite, clays, copper, diamond, gold, iron ore, lead, manganese, mineral sands (titanium minerals), nickel, salt, silver, tin, uranium, and zinc. China is the world leader in proven reserves of antimony, barite, magnesite, molybdenum, rare earths, titanium (ilmenite), tungsten, and vanadium. It also has about 55 billion tons of iron ore, albeit with an average grade of only 30 % to 35 % elemental iron content. With the exception of chromium and copper, China has significant resources of a wide array of minerals and metals, based on its production and/or export capability for these commodities. Additionally, India has significant resources of bauxite and mineral sands; Indonesia, bauxite, copper, nickel, and tin; Malaysia, tin and associated titanium; Mongolia, copper, fluorspar, and lead-zinc; New Caledonia, nickel; New Zealand, gold and iron sand; North Korea, magnesite; Papua New Guinea, copper, gold and mineral sands; Philippines, copper, chromite, and gold; and Sri Lanka, gemstones. Moreover, there appears to be extensive mineralization III Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, but they have yet to be definitively delineated.

In multiphase ternary diffusion studies, plots of the variation bf the composition on the isotherm constitutes one of the most effective methods of presenting experimental results, especially if such plots are made in a manner which relates the composition path on the isotherm with the diffusion layer structure in the couple. Unfortunately, if different conventions for plotting are used serious misinterpretations occur readily, causing apparent disagreement between investigators who actually share the same viewpoint. A common convention for mapping these diffusion paths is needed at this time because with the increasing use of the electron-probe X-ray microanalyzer, a much greater number of ternary diffusion studies can be expected in the near future. In an effort to prevent unnecessary confusion in the future litera- ture, a convention for these plots is proposed, as outlined below. A hypothetical example of the use of these conventions is given in Fig. 1 where the path of composition through the diffusion structure of the 100 pct A/50 pct B, 50 pct C couple is plotted on the appropriate isotherm of the ABC system. The lower case letters relate the region in the diffusion layer structure to the appropriate composition on the ternary isotherm. 1) The diffusion path is plotted on the isothermal section corresponding to the diffusion temperature of the couple. 2) The terminal compositions of the plotted diffusion path are the initial compositions of the couple halves—provided infinite boundary conditions are maintained. If, in either couple half, infinite conditions are not maintained, then the path terminates at the composition of the exterior surface of the couple. If, at this surface, the composition varies with time or if the plotted path is time dependent, then the diffusion time should be noted beside the plotted path. 3) A solid line crossing a single phase field (e.g., line a-b in Fig. 1) denotes an existing layer of that phase in the diffused couple. 4) A dashed line crossing a two-phase field parallel to the tie lines (e.g., line g-h) represents an interface between the two phases with interfacial compositions designated by the ends of the tie-line. The line represents no spatial extent. 5) A solid line crossing a two-phase field so as to cut tie lines (e.g., line b-c or line j-k) represents a locally equilibrated columnar two-phase layer. The solid line should cut those tie lines which correspond to the lateral interfacial equilibria along the columnar

This Bureau of Mines study is an appraisal of the demand for platinum, should this strategic metal be used as a. catalyst in the National abatement of automobile exhaust pollution. The Clean Air Act 0f 1970, as amended, requires that automobiles produced in 1975 and thereafter be provided with antipollutive measures to control automotive exhaust emissions. The study considers the need for automobile pollution control, the methodology for such control, the annual primary (new) platinum demand for automobiles produced from 1975 to 1990, primary platinum availability, and supply-demand forecasts and outlook. The correlative demand for platinum for the production of the required unleaded gasoline is also considered. Methodology for the study included a forecast of new automobile production from 1975 to 1990, development of automobile survival and retirement data, estimates of new platinum demand under various conditions of salvage, and data on recycling the precious metal from the catalytic converters of scrapped vehicles and existing vehicles when their spent converters are exchanged for replacement units. The new platinum demand for automobile exhaust converters, based on a converter service life of 50,000 miles, is estimated to be 1.41 million troy ounces initially in 1975, rising to 1.68 million in 1980, and declining curvi-linearly to 0.94 million in 1990. The platinum demand for converter longevities other than 50,000 miles can be derived from the tabular data presented. An appendix to the report presents a comparison between longevities of 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles. The petroleum industry's demand for new platinum for the production of lead-free gasolines could total as high as 1 million troy ounces between 1972 and 1981, just for expansion of isomerization and reforming capacity, and is in addition to normal operating demand for this metal.

Este trabalho apresenta o sistema de Nível 2 recentemente implementado nos Altos Fornos da TKCSA cujos principais objetivos foram: substituir o sistema antigo com problemas de instabilidade e falta de flexibilidade; auxiliar Operação e especialistas da Unidade Técnica fornecendo informações elaboradas a partir de dados obtidos nos demais sistemas (Nível 1 e Laboratório); enviar set-point ao Nível 1; enviar dados de consumo e produção ao sistema MES; etc. Com a implementação foi possível reduzir o tempo gasto pelos especialistas nas atividades de compilação de dados em planilhas, padronizar a forma de tratamento dos dados, bem como, elevar a confiabilidade das informações pela eliminação de erro de digitação. O sistema tem operado com elevada estabilidade e disponibilidade, atendendo perfeitamente o que foi proposto, de modo que a TKCSA planeja estender para demais plantas da área de Redução.

Deformation processing of rapidly solidified powder alloys presents a technical challenge different in several ways from the processing of ingot based alloys. The metastable phases formed during planar flow casting of aluminum alloy 8009 (FVS0812) must be safe-guarded from high temperature excursions during processing to avoid decomposition; this restriction prohibits liquid phase sintering of particles during consolidation. The development of strong particle-particle adhesion, therefore, relies on the imposition of very large strains during forming operations to insure sufficient mechanical meshing of the aluminum particles and break-up of prior particle oxide boundaries. These strains are generally much greater than those required for metallurgical transformations in ingot based alloys. In an attempt to quantify the deformation required to improve interparticle bonding, the finite element method (FEM) was employed. Preliminary results which predict the metal flow and strain distribution in several workpiece configurations are discussed. These predictions are then correlated to measurements made on experimental subscale forgings. Lastly, experimentally measured quantities which reflect the degree of interparticle bondingg are related back to FEM model predictions.

"Traditional comminution tests are a vital component in every mine plant design. Comminution behavior governs both the cost of equipment and its operating efficiency. Most comminution tests are conducted off site on a limited number of samples, owing to the high costs and long lead times involved. Therefore a strong incentive exists to find alternative means for efficiently characterizing comminution behavior for a truly representative suite of samples. The potential for inferring comminution behavior from drill core is investigated in this paper. Our approach involves development of small scale comminution tests on the one hand, and measurement of a wide range of core attributes on the other. Our focus is the relationship between petrophysical properties and comminution behavior.Petrophysical properties of archival diamond drill core from the Ernest Henry Mine (Queensland, Australia) have been measured using a Geotek multi-sensor petrophysical core logger. We have investigated the relationship between the petrophysical properties and the corresponding small scale A*b and estimated Bond mill work index test results for 2m composites of the core. Core samples were petrophysically classified by means of cluster analysis. Comminution behaviour was then modeled for each cluster via multiple regression. The results suggest that prediction of the comminution behavior on the basis of petrophysics is viable at Ernest Henry.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is the most important downstream operation for mining engineers and metallurgists since most mined materials are subjected to some type of comminution or beneficiation operation (SME, 1992). Comminution or size reduction is typically the first stage of processing. Size reduction steps (crushing and grinding) in any plant consume large amounts of energy, normally more than 50% of total energy (Weiss, 1985). Therefore, it is desirable to obtain laboratory results to design the size reduction equipment appropriately. One of the main factors that control the selection of hard-rock crushing equipment and the design of a crushing circuit is the mechanical character of the ore(s). Work index, density, abrasivity, compressive strength and clay content are essential parameters for ore characterisation (SME, 1992)."

The propagation of explosions through short cylindrical channels has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines. In the experimental apparatus set up by the Bureau, a single such channel formed a connection between a small explosion vessel in which a gaseous explosion was initiated and a larger, partly enclosing, explosion vessel filled with suitable gaseous mixtures; the larger vessel permitted observation to determine if an explosion was induced therein by mass, energy, and species transfer through the channel, as a result of tie initial explosion, It has been found that transmission of flame through to channel is not an essential to induce the second explosion, for hot gases from an extinguished explosion are able to ignite cold combustible mixtures in the larger vessel. The schlieren patterns of flames or hot burned gases emerging from a channel into the explosion chamber were photographed. These show, in most instances, that vortexes of hot gas ejected from the jet into the cold explosive mixture are responsible for ignition. The study has practical significance in problems of rendering electrical equipment safe for use in potentially flammable atmospheres, INTRODUCTION The propagation of flames through cylindrical or annular channels has practical importance in flameproofing electrical equipment and for flame traps. Much practical work has been done to determine the minimum safe breadth of flanges and the maximum safe gap between the flanges that will permit venting an electric motor without allowing flames to pass.

(Illinois) (Genoot) Although the industrial physiologist can still be regarded as a rarity in South African industry, it is obvious that he could make a positive contribution to the control of air pollution. For the past twenty-two years, the gold-mining industry has invoked the aid of industrial physiologists in solving various problems that continually crop up in the more effective and safer utilization of man-power. Air pollution is only one facet that has received attention. It can be stated emphatically that other industries could gain many advantages from the employment of this type of specialist. Because of inadequate opportunities for academic training, however, the industrial physiologists available might not be enough to fill all the possible posts in industry at present, but confidence is expressed that interested persons will soon be able to follow a full university course in this field of study.

Valuators of mineral properties are faced with a range of valuation methodologies, the most important of which are grouped under the headings of the market approach, the cost approach and the income approach. The way in which value is defined and the detail of the different valuation methodologies is examined here. This paper aims at documenting the variety of valuation procedures and applying each method to a variety of gold projects and comparing the outcomes. Any decision to apply a valuation technique will depend principally on the stage to which the project has been developed. The valuation approach to a greenfield project will be substantially different from that applied to a well-drilled, extensively explored mineral property. Furthermore, a valuation exercise may produce different outcomes for the same gold project depending on which method is applied. In order to investigate the variability in valuation methods and to explore the outcomes of different approaches, a series of five gold projects was analysed. The projects differ in regard to levels of capital application, infrastructural setting, depth below surface, in situ grade, and the stage of development, and were valued using the different methods. The most critical aspect of any valuation is the capacity of the valuer to identify the salient issues and ensure that they are incorporated into the valuation. The danger of simply applying ?black box? solutions to valuation problems without a full understanding of the parameters and the areas of uncertainty is emphasized. The importance of the valuator?s experience, insights into best practice and the ability to recognize and submit to the requirements of compliance within the minerals industry is among the most important characteristics of a valuer.

Wardrop Engineering and the Placer Dome?s Campbell Mine Design Team utilized leading edge directional raise boring techniques and an innovative, remote controlled application of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete ground support to achieve improved mine ventilation and a superior, safety focused secondary emergency egress. While more standardized methods may have provided a sufficient solution to either the requirement for a ventilation raise or for a traditional escape ladder way, innovative methodology ensured both objectives were met with a single, enhanced solution. Placer Dome committed to provide a solution that minimized energy consumption, optimized air delivery and facilitated an escape way focused on minimizing the negative physiological aspects associated with mine evacuation. The project was successful in providing a new airway, returning 47 m3/s (100,000 cfm) from the 39 Level to 30 Level, minimizing risk to the raise equipping crew and providing a fully equipped escape hoist. The resulting secure escape environment provided an efficient means of evacuating personnel working at depth without necessitating a potentially dangerous exhausting climb to surface. The project has substantiated, that optimized safety focused design can be achieved without jeopardizing project economics.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. L., and Smith, J. C., 1967, McGraw Hill, NY, Chapter 26, pg. 825). The geometrical arrangement of the roll crusher is shown on the accompanying sketch. Technologies are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so; as they are seen as the means for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost reductions. A point of concern for Caterpillar is that we do not believe there is enough understanding of the infrastructure needed to support some of the future technologies, as well there is not enough utilisation of the current systems.

La central de Paucartambo pertenece a la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, cuya fuerza generada es transmitida a La Oroya mediante una línea de transmisión para 138. 000 voltios. Las partes más importantes de la central son: las obras de captación, el túnel, la tubería de precisión, Casa de fuerza en Yaupi, línea de transmisión, subestaciones y obras complementarias y las obras complementarias como la carretera y los campamentos. Es a partir de la descripción de estas obras componentes, que el objeto del texto señala los métodos de construcción empleados en la perforación y revestimiento del túnel de Paucartambo. El procedimiento utilizado para la perforación de túneles depende de su magnitud y diámetro, encontrándose que el empleo de jumbos para túneles mayores de 3 metros de diámetro es recomendable ya que acelera el proceso de perforación. Mientras que el empleo de cercas de acero es más factible en túneles que tengan mayor tiempo sin revestimiento. En el caso de revestimiento de túneles se sugiere el uso de un equipo moderno que acelere el proceso y mejore la calidad del proyecto. Finalmente, en túneles que requieran grandes volúmenes de concreto, es recomendable el uso de plantas de concreto y laboratorios de campo que los controlen ya que su costo de precio es bajo y la concentración del volumen es mayor.

Keywords: Reactive pellets, CFD, Lagrangian SPH, Pyrometallurgy In several pyrometallurgical processes, reactive pellets are added to a melt. Heat is transferred to the pellets and reaction products such as gases, metal and slag are formed. For many pyrometallurgical processes traditional grid based CFD methods, such as using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Volume (or Control Volume methods), produce suitable predictions. However, the inclusion of solids in the bath represents significant challenges for these methods. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), a Lagrangian simulation method, is able to simulate both the fluid component of the bath and any immersed solid materials, tracking the motion of these solids, and their interaction with the fluid, including gas generation. In this paper, we will summarize the key aspects of the SPH method and will show a series of structured examples illustrating the behavior of the different physics sub-systems that are used in the model of the overall system.

This paper presents a unique case history that documents the use of a braced secant pile wall to underpin a heavily loaded footing inside of a manufacturing plant. Construction of a pit for a new manufacturing process directly next to the footing necessitated the underpinning. The footing supports an overhead crane that needed to remain operational throughout construction of the pit and therefore, settlement of the footing could not be tolerated. The base of the footing was about 7.7 feet above the base of the 17-foot deep excavation. The footing bears on a silty clay deposit that grades from a stiff consistency beneath the footing to a soft/medium consistency near the base of the pit excavation. This paper describes the design and construction of the secant pile wall and bracing to control wall deformations, ground movements and settlement of the footing. The footing was monitored for settlement throughout construction of the pit and no measurable movement was observed.

"SynopsisThe last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was characterized by a belief in volume at any cost, where absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations. This practice fuelled overoptimistic forecasting and planning, which in turn contributed to the economic crisis that followed. The sudden collapse of commodity prices has resulted in mining companies scrambling to find the right balance between optimizing current operations and preserving sufficient flexibility to grasp future opportunities. The runaway costs of building and operating mines have almost squeezed out profit margins, while lower ore grades are inflating production costs. Mining companies therefore need to look at the business with fresh eyes, and develop strategies to attract equity capital as traditional approaches are simply not working anymore. This is especially so in the context of a dwindling investor base that continues to demand greater returns, despite a significantly lower appetite for risk. This paper revisits the micro-economic concepts and demonstrates how pressure from shareholders to prioritize output contributed to spiralling costs and value destruction. Practical techniques are described to model cost curves to optimize a Mineral Resource endowment and address the need to rightbalance a business and preserve agility.IntroductionHenry Lazenby (2014) for the Mining Weekly writes, ‘Bruised and battered, the global mining industry today is undergoing a sea change. Practices and policies that might have worked wonders in the past are not as relevant today, and new approaches to running profitable mining operations need to be found.’ One significant practice the mining industry had during the last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was chasing volume at any cost; absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations (Goldsmith, 2013). Amostras de aço inoxidável UNSS31803 duplex foram nitretadas sob plasma em atmosfera gasosa de 75% de nitrogênio e 25% de hidrogênio em temperatura de 400°C durante 20 horas. A microestrutura do material como recebido apresentava cordões de ferrita e austenita, alinhados no sentido da laminação, com aproximadamente 50% de cada uma das fases. A caracterização microestrutural foi feita por microscopia óptica, difração de raios X, MEV e EBSD. As propriedades mecânicas e tribológicas das superfícies tratadas foram avaliadas utilizando ensaios de microdureza e esclerometria linear instrumentada. As camadas obtidas na nitretação a plasma em baixa temperatura (LTPN) eram constituídas por ferrita expandida (aN) e austenita expandida (?N), com durezas de 1509 HV e de 1362 HV, respectivamente. Os ensaios de esclerometria linear mostraram que, num primeiro estágio, o indentador se movimenta sobre a camada nitretada, promovendo deformação plástica nas bordas do sulco, denotando a possibilidade de movimentação de discordância nas fases expandidas da camada nitretada. O coeficiente de atrito medido durante esse estágio ficou estável em torno de 0,05. Ao final do primeiro estágio houve início de formação de microtrincas, aumentando o coeficiente de atrito aparente. A transição para o 2º estágio ocorre com formação de microtrincas cuja densidade aumenta com o aumento da profundidade de risco. Nesse estágio o coeficiente de atrito cresce linearmente com o tempo e profundidade de risco, o número de microtrincas cresce e as microtrincas observadas são predominantemente transgranulares, típicas de falha coesiva da camada. Foram observadas, também, microtrincas intergranulares que causam o destacamento individual de pequenos grãos de ferrita e/ou austenita expandida. No terceiro estágio de riscamento o coeficiente de atrito aparente tende a se estabilizar em torno de 0,16. O ensaio de esclerometria linear realizado no aço como recebido apresenta coeficiente de atrito sempre crescente até atingir um valor em torno de 0,21.

The high transverse tensile stresses that develop in precast concrete piles during driving have been investigated experimentally from pile load tests and theoretically using the finite element method (FEM). These tensile stresses can be high enough to cause longitudinal splitting of the piles just below the pile cap. Test data and FEM indicated that the maximum transverse tensile stress will increase with increasing thickness of the cover. The maximum tensile stress can be high especially if the pile is eccentrically loaded. The results from the experimental investigation and from FEM are described in the paper as well as a simplified method based on the stress distribution in a concrete cylinder at an indirect tension test.
