This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

The catalysed direct reduction of copper sulphide with carbon and lime was investigated in the range 850-1000 degrees C using Cu2S-CaO-C and Cu2S-4CaO-4C reaction mixtures. The effects of the catalytic additives K2CO3, Li2CO3, Na2CO3, NaF, Na2SO3 and the ternary eutectic (K,Li,Na)2CO3 were determined. Potassium carbonate, sodium fluoride and the ternary appear to be the most effective catalysts for the direct reduction process. The rate enhancement of the catalysed carbothermic reduction of copper sulphide in the presence of lime was explained in terms of the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction

Neither the copper orebodies nor the zinc-lead-silver orebodies at Mount Isa were formed syntectonically as has been claimed for the last 20 and 10 years respectively. Both orebody types were cogenetic, coeval, and formed early during the sedimentation and diagenesis of the host formation. The copper orebodies are interpreted as having formed diagenetically at hand specimen scale, syngenetically at formation scale. The zinc-lead-silver orebodies are interpreted as having formed primarily by sedimentary means at both hand specimen and formation scales.

"The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. This report presents the results of a study of mill tailings disposal practices and potential tailings dam stability problems. Recognizing the long period of time that would be required to develop the technology and practices necessary to significantly improve refuse disposal safety, the Bureau initiated this research effort as a first step in that development. Volume 1 includes a summary of conclusions and recommendations resulting from the overall research effort; discussions of disposal systems and methods, geology, seismicity, hydrology, and materials characteristics; evaluations of investigational techniques; discussions of usable interim generalized investigational, analytical and inspection procedures; discussion of general principles and presentation of a tailings technology manual outline; and discussion of needed future research am recommended programs.

Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi a obtenção de microestruturas diferenciadas, em um aço baixo carbono com microadição de Molibdênio e Nióbio laminado a quente, após submetê-lo a diferentes meios de resfriamento antes e após a temperatura de interrupção de 600°C (que simulava a temperatura de bobinamento). A evolução microestrutural e mecânica foi avaliada com o auxílio de técnicas de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura, testes de dureza Vickers e tração uniaxial, somado a determinação das temperaturas de transformação de fase em um analisador termomecânico (TMA). De acordo com os resultados, meios de resfriamentos mais severos foram mais efetivos em proporcionar um aumento da resistência mecânica associado a decréscimo da ductilidade pela formação de fases mais dura e aumento da acicularidade da ferrita.

It is concluded that diamonds are held as cherished possessions, valued far above their real market price, retained as valued heirlooms, and widely used as a form of highly liquid currency. In order to sustain value, both from an investment and jewellery perspective, demand has been stimulated to keep pace with growing global supply while the illusion that ?diamonds are forever? has been fostered to ensure that most diamonds, once sold, do not re-enter the market.

Information on the performance of coal-cleaning equipment is necessary to provide a basis for evaluating the performance of existing plants and projecting that of new plants. Performance data can contribute greatly to the wise selection and effective use of coal-washing equipment. The Bureau of Mines has published information on the performance of several commercial plants, as well as of some laboratory-scale equipment, 5 (2-9, 11, 12, 17-12, 21-25) from time to time for a number of years. A more intensive program to provide such information for all the principal types of cleaning equipment is underway. The present evaluation of table performance is part of this program.

Coal seams form over millions of years by the biochemical decay and metamorphic transformation of plant materials. This coalification process produces large quantities of byproduct gases, such as methane and carbon dioxide. The amount of these byproducts increases with the rank of coal. It is the highest for anthracite, where for every ton of coal nearly 1,900 lb of water, 2,420 lb (20,000 ft3) of carbon dioxide, and 1,186 lb (27,000 ft3) of methane are produced [Hargraves 1973]. Most of these gases escape to the atmosphere during the coalification process, but a small fraction is retained in the coal. The amount of gas retained in the coal depends on a number of factors, such as the rank of coal, the depth of burial, the type of rock in the immediate roof and floor, local geologic anomalies, and the tectonic pressures and temperatures prevalent at that time. The gases are contained under pressure and mainly adsorbed on the surface of the coal matrix, but a small fraction of gases is also present in the fracture net-work of the coal. Methane is the major component of gases in coal, comprising 80%–90% or more of the total gas volume. The balance is made up of ethane, propane, butane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, oxygen, and argon.

The steelmaking plant in Timoteo Brasil is equipped with one AODconverter for stainless steel and one MRPL-converter for special steel production. The MRP-L converter is almost in operation for 20 years. In order to improve production Aperam decided to install a new converter with increased reaction volume equipped with DANIELI state of art technology. This paper describes the major changes and improvements of the new converter installation.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies of the combustion residues of carbonaceous dust particles resulting from explosions and thermal ignitions in laboratory and full-scale mine tests. The dusts studied varied widely in rank and volatility: Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal (35% volatility), Pocahontas seam bituminous coal (16% volatility), anthracite (7% volatility), graphite, and diamond. The most systematic explosion studies were performed in an 8-L chamber with narrow size distributions of Pittsburgh coal dust with surface mean diameters of 2, 22, and 84 pm. Experiments were conducted mainly in air, with some data obtained in 50% 02. Observations of the bituminous coal explosion residues showed particles with rounded edges, particles with blowholes, and some cenospheres. The lower volatility dust residues showed fewer changes from the original, unburned dust. In addition to the experimental studies, results of SEM observations of residues from a mine explosion disaster are reported. Comparison of such residues with those from the laboratory and experimental mine explosions can help investigators determine the extent of dust participation in the disaster and in identifying the possible ignition sources.

The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority is implementing the Anacostia River Projects component of its Long-Term CSO Control Plan, including 21 kilometers of 3.7- to 7-meter-diameter CSO near-surface diversion storage/conveyance structures and flood relief, pressurized-face, soft ground tunnels at a maximum depth of 65 meters. This paper describes a project-specific soil grouping system that is primarily based on soil characteristics for tunneling derived from tests including Atterberg limits, grain size, swelling, mineralogy, triaxial, pressure meter, and consolidation, which differentiates the project from past area tunnel projects using descriptive systems based primarily on area geology.

In this project, low grade copper ore samples were obtained from two mining sites in the US, and they were chalcopyrite-rich (sample A) and conichalcite-rich (sample B) ore. Copper grades were 0.6% and 0.4% for the two samples, A and B, respectively. Leaching experiments were conducted by bottle roll tests for 24 hours, and various lixiviant systems were applied. Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and glycine were used as alternative lixiviants to sulfuric acid. Oxidants including ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide were tested. The results showed the copper extraction of sample A increased after adding 1 g/L ferric ion in sulfuric acid and MSA solution, from 20% to 36%, but further increase was not observed with higher ferric ion concentration. The copper recovery increased significantly with H2O2 concentration, and over 80% copper recovery was obtained with 10% H2O2. For sample B, the copper dissolution kinetics were relatively fast and reached the maximum value in five hours. Around 60% copper were extracted in sulfuric acid and MSA solution. Copper recovery slightly increased after adding ferric ion and H2O2. Glycine is a weaker lixiviant for both samples, the copper extractions were 36% and 4% respectively. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most abundant copper sulfide mineral on earth, and it is one of the most refractory copper minerals regarding chemical processing. The declining copper grade and depletion of copper oxide deposits stimulate the development of hydrometallurgical process to extract copper from chalcopyrite. The dissolution of chalcopyrite by ferric ion is normally illustrated as Equation (1) and (2) (Dutrizac & MacDonald, 1974): CuFeS2 + 4Fe3+ → Cu2+ + 5Fe2+ + 2S0 (1) CuFeS2 + 4Fe3+ + 3O2 + 2H2O → Cu2+ + 5Fe2+ + 2H2SO4 (2) However, slow kinetics are usually observed from chalcopyrite leaching at ambient temperature and pressure. Researchers attribute the slow kinetics to passivation during chalcopyrite dissolution, and different passivation products are also proposed (Klauber, 2008). In recent years, many efforts have made to develop new methods to extract copper from chalcopyrite, such as utilizing bacteria or stronger oxidant (Zhao et al., 2015; Ruiz-Sánchez & Lapidus, 2017).

Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. A method is described whereby the behavior of the front is approximated when gas is injected into a thick reservoir having reasonably homogeneous properties. The method is applied to the Abqaiq field of Saudi Arabia. The producing member is the Arab-D, a high-permeability calcarenite which has no continuous betlding planes. Field performance indicates the injected gas to be partially miscible with the reservoir oil because gas volume factors experienced are lower than those predicted by the gas law. Eqlrilibril~m calculations confirnz ihis and also show that the volume factor may vary appreciably, depending on the relative quantities of oil and gas in contact in the reservoir; consequently, volutnetric balances are made for the purpose of determining the behavior of the gas volume factor during injection history. The effect of gravity segregation on position and shape of the gas front is approximated by dividing the producing section into three zones vertically and tracing the movement of the average interface in each zone, with counterflow of oil and gas taking place betweell zones behind the front. This results in a gas front that advances more rapidly along the top of [he formation than along the base, producing an "umbrella" effect in cross section that becomes more pronounced as the front progresses. The calculations cover the gas-injection period of Abqaiq field history through 1958, and the position of the gas front is plotted at one-year intervals. Finally, some comparisotls between the calcrlated fronial position and the gas-oil contact as Measured by neutron logs are made. INTRODUCTION Fig. 1 is a structure contour map of the Abqaiq field. For analytical purpcses, the field has been divided into two areas designated A and B, as shown on the map. Gas injection into Area A was begun in early 1954 into two wells located near the crest of the structure on the north-south axis of the anticline. During the period covered by this paper, the average injection rate has been 122 MMscf/D with a maximum sustained rate of 160 MMscf/D. The reservoir pressure has been maintained at 2,450 psig since start of gas injection. The reservoir originally was undersaturated but, prior to pressure maintenance, the pressure was drawn below the bubble point in most of the Area A section, creating an in-place free-gas saturation of 8 per cent at the crest of the structure. The average critical gas saturation is 13 per cent established by laboratcry core tests. That the entire reservoir remained below critical gas saturation prior to gas injection is borne out by the fact that none of the crestal wells have exhibited high gas-oil ratios during production history. The Area A reservoir is a carbonate section about 200-ft thick having average porosity and permeability of the order of 22 per cent and 500 md, respectively. The greenstone belt developed along the Sandawana line, an anastomosing, transcrustal shear zone. The lode gold is concentrated in veins and along brittle-ductile shear zones and other faults. Gold contents of 200 rock samples were found to be well below economically significant levels, excluding purely syngenetic deposit formation. Average gold content of unmineralised banded iron formation decreases from 7.3 ppb in the east (Manica) to 1.6 ppb in the west (Odzi), where depletion reflects hydrothermal leaching. The mineralising fluids may have been generated during deep crustal deformation, metamorphism and magmatism. Gold was hydrothermally deposited during carbonatisation and sericitisation of ultramafic and mafic rocks and during hydrothermal overprinting of banded iron formation and felsic rocks. It is present in native form and as microscopic to submicroscopic inclusions in pyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. Argentiferous galena and other sulphides are commonly observed. Rezende, which produced over 38 t Au, is hosted by a granodiorite stock. By-product gold was produced from Cu-Ni sulphides at Mundonguara. The deposits are related to the older, but not the younger, of the granitoids intruding the belt's supracrustal sequences; the estimated age of mineralisation is 2700-2600 Ma. Odzi district, with 61 mines, has produced only 3.5 t Au as its higher-level host rocks have apparently been eroded. Mutare (formerly Umtali) district, with 133 mines and 9 placers, has produced 68 t Au (65 t from Rezende and adjacent deposits), and Manica district, with 23 mines and 8 placers, 12 t Au.
