Approach To prevent exhaustion caused by thermal stress, a rescuer can wear a liquid-cooled hood and vest which absorbs heat, thereby reducing the heat-induced strain on the rescuer's heart and circulatory system. How It Works Liquid coolant is continuously circulated through a self-contained system in which the coolant is chilled by a heat sink on the wearer's belt. The coolant, which is a mixture of alcohol and water, is pumped from the heat sink to bladders inside the hood and vest where it absorbs body heat. After absorbing heat In the hood and vest areas, the coolant returns to the heat sink where it is rechilled by passing through a tube coiled around a steel can containing a block of ice. To adjust the temperature of coolant leaving the heat sink unit, a valve can be operated by the wearer, causing part of the flow to bypass the coil. A small pump and a rechargeable battery are also part of the assembly.

Geologic resource assessments describe the location, general characteristics, and estimated volumes of resources, whether in-situ or technically recoverable. Such compilations are only an initial step in economic resource evaluation. Forecasts that assume that resources that exist in nature can be commercially produced as needed ignore economic constraints. This paper identifies, by example, the salient features of a geologic assessment that will assure its usefulness for economic analysis. These features are demonstrated with examples of coal resource assessments and coal bed gas assessments.

Complying with respirable dust standards is presently a critical problem for many longwall faces equipped with double drum shearers. Results are presented of research performed to increase the quantity and optimize the distribution of the water supplied to the shearer drums to control the shearer operator dust exposure. The effect on the total respirable dust produced by the shearer was also examined. During the research effort, a simple and inexpensive manually controlled valve system was designed and implemented on a shearer to distribute the water supplied to the shearer drums. Research showed that increases in water quantities are beneficial but associated pressure increases may induce respirable dust boilover negating potential advantages. Other essential parameters such as location of shearer operator, outside spray orientation and air quantity were considered in the evaluation.

An assessment of methods currently available for the accurate determination of low concentrations of platinum in ores and mineral concentrates indicated that prior treatment of the sample by fire assay procedures is necessary. To enable rapid determinations to be carried out, instrumental methods applied to the metallic bead produced from the fire assay treatment have been evaluated, considering maximum flexibility for concentration variations, minimum chemical operations, and adequate sensitivity.Atomic absorption spectrometry proved suitable, giving solution determination limits of 0·4 p.p.m. Pt, 0·1 p.p.m. Pt, or 0·06 p.p.m. Pt under various extraction conditions using aqueous and organic agents. Thesedetermination limits related to 1 assay ton of sample (32·67 g) produced easily readable and accurate readings within the range of platinum contents (0·03-2·0 p.p.m.) of economic interest in deposit evaluation and prospecting. The technique shows promise of also being suitable for determination of palladium and gold.

As part of a continuing effort to develop technology that maximizes mineral and metal recovery from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a method to totally utilize copper converter slags without recycling them back through the matte smelting furnace. The research was directed toward (1) recovering the contained copper in converting slags by producing a recyclable copper-iron matte, (2) carbothermically reducing the slags to recover the iron, and (3) producing slag wool from the depleted slags. This report deals with the reduction of three industrial converting slags, containing 2.0 to 7.3 wt-pct Cu, in an 800-kVA electric arc furnace to produce a recyclable copper-iron matte. The addition of sufficient iron pyrite to provide 29 to 113 pct of the stoichiometric sulfur (based on producing 40-pct-Cu matte) produced a recyclable matte (36 to 61 pct Cu) at an energy consumption of 520 to 700 kWh per ton of solid material charged. The expected energy saving for treating molten slag in an electric furnace (5-to 9-MVA range) is about 400 kWh per ton of molten slag treated.

Circulating Air Classification of Manufactured Sand Due to environmental concerns, the supply and use of natural gravel has been limited by the Swedish government. The Swedish concrete industry is therefore examining manufactured sand as an alternative that has equal or better product quality, and which the Swedish quarry industry already has the ability to deliver. However, in order to comply with the specifications set by the concrete industry, a better means of classification is needed, as the proportion of fine particles (filler) smaller than 63 - 125 ¦m in size must be reduced. One classification technology that meets the requirements may be air classification. This paper examines the process of circulating air classification, which is not yet commonly used in the Swedish quarry industry; suggesting that a better understanding of the process is needed. The circulating air classifier in this study has two internal machine parameters that can affect the separation point; namely, the speeds of the circulating fan and the separator fan. We study their effect on the separation point as well as the interaction between these parameters. Full-scale parameter tests are also conducted, in which size distribution is measured before and after the circulating air classification. This study shows how the different parameters affect the separation point and that it is possible to produce manufactured sand according to specifications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD, Fluent) is used to study the internal flow of the air circulating within the classifier. A single-phase study of the flow field is conducted to support and explain the findings from the full-scale tests.

The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. A deterioration in metallurgical performance at each concentrator occurred as a result, with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues. Investigations to determine the reasons for this problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical deterioration.

The Waihi-Waitekauri region hosts numerous low-sulfidation epithermal deposits that both outcrop and occur at depth. Zones of intense hydrothermal alteration enclose the Au-Ag bearing quartz vein deposits. Hydrothermal alteration includes the destruction of magnetite by hydrothermal fluids, pervasive silicification adjacent to quartz lodes and potassium enrichment due to adularia and illite deposition. High-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric, and new gravity data delineate distinct geophysical anomalies associated with hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation. Five magnetically quiet zones occur in the region varying in size from 3 to 34 km2 and in geometry from circular to irregular zones. These zones represent the near-surface extent of strong to intense hydrothermal alteration associated with fossil geothermal systems. All epithermal deposits in the region occur in magnetically quiet zones. Over 120 new gravity stations together with existing data across the Waihi district have defined a positive Bouguer gravity anomaly coincident with the magnetically quiet zone. Eastern and western gradients of 50 gu/km bound the anomaly that contains two flat gravity highs west and east of the Waihi deposit. Strong potassium signatures in airborne radiometric data correlate with outcropping zones of alteration and are consistent with the presence of adularia and illite minerals. Hydrothermally altered zones are represented by areas of low Th/K ratios as a result of low thorium concentrations in andesite and elevated potassium levels in altered zones.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical investigations for tunneling projects typically use vertical test borings and, to a lesser extent, angled borings. Horizontal drilling applications were often limited to specialty testing programs and to perform probe drilling from a tunnel boring machine (TBM) as part of production tunneling. The former often involved cumbersome setups with skid rigs and cribbing in a pilot tunnel or shaft. The latter usually was limited to generic probing for rock quality and ground water conditions with no sampling. Neither yielded continuous core at production rates suitable for design and construction planning. Conventional vertical investigations still make sense in many instances, particularly for tunnels planned beneath urban settings where truck access is convenient and where the tunnel horizon is not readily accessible via a portal or shaft. However, equipment is presently available to conduct horizontal geotechnicall investigations at reasonable production rates and cost. Advantages include continuously sampling the tunneling horizon and minimizing “access drilling” to get the zone of interest at the underground construction horizon. Horizontal boring lengths of up to approximately 800 m are considered feasible and those in the range of 150 to300 m are now routine. These capabilities make horizontal borings an attractive option to consider when looking at deep tunnels beneath ridges, especially where access is limited. Fewer drilling staging sites can also mean reduced environmental impacts when investigating tunnels proposed beneath sensitive lands such as public wilderness areas. Investment in early construction packages to develop portals for investigation access and, possibly in excavating test shafts for the same purpose should even be considered. Potential benefits in the form of achieving improved overall project costs using horizontal borings exist because of the significant additional data collected in the tunnel horizon. For this reason they should be considered during the routine cost-benefit analyses generally conducted for planning geotechnical investigations for tunneling. A two-phase program evaluated commercial proximity warning devices and then served to design and develop an automatic electrostatic field strength measurement device with improved performance. The Phase I program consisted of test and evaluation of three commercial proximity warning devices, all of which operate on the principle of electrostatic field intensity measurement for determining proximity to high voltage power lines. Performance testing of these devices utilized full-scale cranes and power line systems and a scale model facility. The evaluation results were reported in the Phase I report entitled "Evaluation of Proximity Warning Devices" dated 22 February 1980. Under the Phase II program, a microproressor-based data acquisition system was designed and developed to collect and measure field strength at distributed points around the crane boom. This unit (referred to as the Distributed Sensor AC Electrometer) measures the field strength about a crane boom using 17 distributed sensors. Keyboard control is provided for the equipment operator. Measured field strength values are displayed on a line printer and recorded on magnetic tape. Laboratory testing of this unit demonstrated performance characteristics and field strength measurement accuracy within the design goals. A Phase III measurements program is proposed using the AC Electrometer to map the field strength contours about power line configurations.

A cerâmica adicionada diminuiu sua retração linear com a quantidade de resíduos e evita assim alterações dimensionais excessivas nos produtos finais. Outra vantagem foi a diminuição na absorção de água com resíduos adicionados. As resistências à flexão e à compressão sofreram uma diminuição associada à adição de resíduos. Isto foi atribuído à grande quantidade de quartzo nos resíduos, que gera rachaduras e enfraquece o produto final. No entanto, até 30% em peso de adição a resistência mecânica, de acordo com a norma ASTM, é ainda satisfatória para utilização como cerâmica de pavimentação.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former U. S. Bureau of Mines to develop techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining work place associated with coal bumps. Current research focuses on both analyzing historical seismic data from bump-prone operations and utilizing a mine-wide seismic network to investigate the exact strata failure mechanics associated with bump-prone geology. The anticipated outcome of this research will be reduced bump incidences through advanced engineering concepts and designs which implement the new understanding of strata behavior. The analysis of the historic seismic data consists of correlating observed mining seismicity with the geologic and geometric parameters at the sites. The primary seismic parameters are the timing, location and magnitude of are corded seismic event. These parameters are correlated with such mining parameters as: the overburden, the size of the immediate gob, the size of the district gob area, etc. This detailed analysis of historical seismic data has provided an informative quantifiable relationship between many of the specific mining parameters and the induced seismicity. The second aspect of the coal bump research is the instrumentation of an appropriate field site to determine the main roof, floor, and gob behavior associated with bump behavior. The chosen field site is a deep-cover longwall mine with competent geology in a historically bump-prone area. The primary field instrumentation is a three-dimensional, full-waveform, seismic array with both surface and underground sensors surrounding an active multi-panel district. The purpose of this seismic array is to determine the timing, the exact location, and the mechanism (tensile fracture, bedding plane slip, etc.) of the failure of the strata surrounding the active and multi-panel gobs. The preliminary results presented in this paper help to define the strata failure areas around the longwall panel.

Tunnel boring machines continue to develop to take on not only larger and larger diameters but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar has required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunnelling machines that can not only safely excavate the tunnel but do so in an efficient, cost effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This paper will review the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied.

The goal of this program was to produce a set of baseline health and safety training materials that could be used by the metal/nonmetal mining industry to reduce injuries and to comply with federal training requirements. The materials developed are arranged in a two level outline format. The first level provides the title, course goals, background and topical outline while the second level provides a detailed outline of the course content. Visuals, designed to portray miners in a positive, attractive fashion, were done in simple line drawing so they would reproduce for handouts without loss of quality. Each of the required units in the Baseline Guides have one or more self-checks. These are designed to be suggestive of evaluation techniques the users can develop for themselves. An instructors guide and a mining terms glossary are included. In a second phase the program developed performance based training guides for Annual Retraining and Experienced New Hires in the Underground Salt Industry.

In order to predict the composition of inclusions and to ascertain a method to prevent inclusions from forming in liquid Fe-16 mass Cr alloy, a thermodynamic database was developed through a quantitative determination of thermodynamic relationships of Cr-Al-Si-Mn systems in the liquid Fe alloys. Applications of the databases to the prediction of Mn/Si complex deoxidation with Alin Fe-16 mass Cr alloy were demonstrated in succession. The electromagnetic levitation technique using a cold crucible was employed to separate inclusions from liquid metallic alloys completely and to prevent any contamination from surroundings. Various interaction parameters in the liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy system were determined; these are: [eAl(Fe)Cr= 0.19/T, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.01, rAl(Fe)O,Cr= -0.00013, eS1Cr(Fe)= -0.38/T,rSi(Fe)O,Cr= 0.007, rO(Fe)Si,Cr= 0.0044, rA1(Fe)Si,Cr= -0.0075, rSi(Fe)A1,Cr= -0.0078, rSi(Fe)Mn,Cr= 0.005, and rMn(Fe)Si,Cr=0.01.] An improved database, utilizing interaction parameters for molten metal determined in this study, and the Fact Sage slag database of the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CrOx-MgO system were used for thermodynamic calculations. These were carried out under various thermodynamic conditions, and results were compared with experimental data of Si/Al, Mn/Si, and Mn/Si/Al deoxidation equilibria. With the abovementioned results, together with experimentally obtained data, thermodynamic conditions were determined, in particular Mn and Si contents, under which liquid inclusions form in liquid Fe-16 mass per cent Cr alloy. The critical Al content in liquid Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, above which solid inclusion of corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) formed, was as low as 10 ppm. This indicates that extreme care must be taken in controlling the Al content in the metal to avoid formation of solid corundum phase ((Al,Cr)2O3) inclusion. The compositional change prediction of inclusions, which originate from slag entrapment and by Ca addition, was demonstrated by use of the alloy database optimized through this study, and the Fact Sage oxide database. For Si-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, high Si and low basicity of slag are effective to obtain liquid inclusions. For Al-deoxidized Fe-16 per cent Cr alloy, it is important to keep the Si content lower than 0.1 per cent and it is required to add Ca. This article examines the spatial variability of dust concentrations within a coal miner?s breathing zone and the impact of sampling location at the cap lamp, nose, and lapel. Tests were conducted in the National Institute for Safety and Health Pittsburgh Research Laboratory full-scale, continuous miner gallery using three prototype personal dust monitors (PDM). The dust masses detected by the PDMs were used to calculate the percentage difference of dust mass between the cap lamp and the nose and between the lapel and the nose. The calculated percentage differences of the masses ranged from plus 12% to minus 25%. Breathing zone tests were also conducted in four underground coal mines using the torso of a mannequin to simulate a miner. Coal mine dust was sampled with multi-cyclone sampling cans mounted directly in front of the mannequin near the cap lamp, nose, and lapel. These four coal mine tests found that the spatial variability of dust levels and imprecision of the current personal sampler is a greater influence than the sampler location within the breathing zone. However, a one-sample t-test of this data did find that the overall mean value of the cap lamp/nose ratio was not significantly different than 1 (p-value = 0.21). However, when applied to the overall mean value of the lapel/nose ratio there was a significant difference from 1 (p-value < .0001). This finding is important because the lapel has always been the sampling location for coal mine dust samples. But these results suggest that the cap location is slightly more indicative of what is breathed through the nose area.

Twenty-three companies mined kaolin in nine States in 2004. Production was estimated to be 7.6 Mt (8.3 million st) valued at $912 million, based on preliminary data. This was a slight decrease from 7.68 Mt (8.46 million st) valued at $939 million in 2003.Georgia was the leading producer state with an estimated 6.5 Mt (7.1 million st) in production. It was followed, in decreasing order of tonnage, by South Carolina, Alabama, California, Texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina. Georgia accounted for nearly the entire domestic water-washed, delaminated, and pigment-grade calcined kaolin production. Consumption Sales to the paper industry accounted for 49 percent of domestic sales and 64 percent of total sales. Other major markets for domestic sales were refractory products (10 percent), paint (5 percent), fiberglass (4 percent), catalysts (3 percent) and rubber (2 percent).Paper coating and filler markets accounted for about 87percent of export sales of kaolin.
