The early records of hydraulic elevator and bucket ladder dredging in the Clutha River system indicate the success of that era of alluvial gold mining in Otago. This paper briefly reviews parameters of depth and gold grade for alluvial operations. The application of dragline technology is proposed for the economic removal of overburden to target the deeper alluvial gold areas which remain in the Otago region.

Optimising flotation designs and innovations is a complex process involving many parameters, one of which is ensuring sufficient testwork is carried out at plant level before these innovations are launched in the marketplace. This paper will describe how modern design tools are utilized, what are testwork phases at various plants and how results and observations have helped to validate and optimise flotation design innovations. Scale-up of equipment has long been the prevalent trend, but how long can it continue? Are there other means for pushing the boundaries of present technology? Some present challenges and future directions are given in the light of theoretical criteria for scale-up and how it has been applied in practice. Very large flotation cells of 300 m3 size have been installed in New Zealand, and relevant results from the metallurgical and mechanical aspects are presented and discussed. Utilization of the cell volume is also important. New innovations in the hydrodynamic domain are presented and discussed. Means to enhance flotation of coarse and fine particles are shown with results from plant testwork. Accurate control of large flotation cells is vital to optimize yields and grades. Froth image analysis and intelligent level control are presented ? again - with relevant plant results.

The 9th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting was held in the Granada Conference Centre, Granada, Spain from the 14th - 17th September 2009. The Symposium was preceded by a 1 ½ day Workshop on “Vibrations from Blasting” organized by the initiator Dr. Alex Spathis and his colleague M. J. Noy, both employed at Orica Mining, Australia. Prof. Josè Sanchidrian at the “Universidad Politécnic de Madrid” in Madrid, Spain was the main organizer for both the Workshop and the Symposium. A record number of participants came (292) from a record number of countries (41). There were a total of 14 papers in the Vibrations from Blasting Seminar and 96 papers and 2 Keynote Addresses in the Fragblast 9 Symposium itself. The aim with this paper is to present some results from Fragblast 9 which are of interest for a large target group. One very important result from the Fragblast 9 meeting was that it was decided there that Fragblast 10 will be held in November 2012 New Delhi India.

Image-based remote sensing of rock fragmentation in mining and quarry applications essentially treats each rock in the image as a data object in order to determine the rock size distribution. An obvious challenge after rock delineation in a 2D image is the scale of the delineated objects. Conventionally, either objects of known size are placed in the scene or parallel laser pointer are used, both making some assumptions, to calculate scaling factors. These assumptions are applied to the whole scene rather than sensing individual rock attributes.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more TiO2 than the formula FeTi03 would indicate, and some Fe2O3. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates. (') The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amaphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide. Other studies(2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal pr0cesses.(3,4,5 Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering. (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived. (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions. ETCH FIGURES ON ILMENITE CRYSTAL PLANES A rather large ilmenite crystal from Sannidal, Norway, about 11/2 x 11/2 x 2 inches, bearing a few natural faces with imperfect surfaces, was prepared for etching by grinding and polishing crystal planes whose Bravais-Miller indices (referred to hexagonal axes) had been determined by X-ray methods to be 00.1, 10.0, and 10.2. Metallographic examination showed that the crystal was homogeneous, and uniform in orientation, except for the presence of twin lamellae which were oriented with their broadest surfaces parallel to the 00.1 planes of the large crystal. Since ilmenite is rather inert to standard etch reagents, strong solutions of hot sulfuric acid and cold hydrofluoric acid were used. Preliminary tests established that better etch figures were obtained using HF than with H2So4 solutions. The etch figures produced on 00.1 and 01.0 planes of ilmenite by etching 3 to 5 minutes in cold concentrated HF solution are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the areas in which we operate. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.

"This report presents the results of a laboratory study undertaken to evaluate ground granulated blast-furnace slag from Algoma Steel Corporation, as a replacement for Portland cement in cemented mine backfill. The evaluation was based on the results of compressive strength tests performed on cylinders cast from mixtures made with a granulated blast-furnace slag and tailings from four different mines in the Sudbury basin. Various percent¬ages of slags and various binder to tailings ratios were used.Tests results show that, in terms of compressive strength, the slag performs as well or better than Portland cement as the binding agent in cemented mine backfill. Lime was found to be a poten¬tially good activator for ground granulated slag in mine backfill applications.A field test was conducted at one of the mines, consisting of placing a mixture of 95.5% ground granulated slag and 0.5% lime into a stope, and inspecting the floor slab as it hardened. The slag performed as expected, considering the backfill mixture proportions used and the preparation of the test site."

When one looks back and does assessments of what has been the key ingredient in achieving success in our safety efforts, there are many issues that spring to mind and cover a wide array of elements. One does not know which has the ultimate maximum effect. In his presentation yesterday, Alan Peers, our SHEQ leader, covered a lot of detail with the way we are managing safety at Modikwa. I have attempted to identify some of the key essentials in making the mine safe. Passion Safety is addressed with a passion that is unbelievable at times. When I get phoned because an incident has occurred and in reporting the incident, there are already action plans being put in place to prevent re-occurrences, you understand the commitment to put employees? safety first. You hear the disappointment in your subordinates? voices when they have to share the fact that an incident or accident has occurred.

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. A new process comprising metallizing reduction, magnetic separation, and electroheat melting separation is proposed with the aim of achieving high recoveries of iron, vanadium, and titanium from vanadium titanomagnetite. The effects of magnetic intensity, reduction temperature, reduction time, carbon ratio, and coal particle size on the efficiency of reductionmagnetic separation were investigated, the reaction mechanisms elucidated by SEM and EDS analysis, and the optimal process parameters established. Recoveries of up to 80.08% for titanium, 95.07% for iron, and 71.60% for vanadium were achieved. The reduction sequence is shown to be: Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe; Fe2TiO5 ? Fe2TiO4 + TiO2 ? Fe + FeTiO3 ? Fe + FeTi2O5 ? Fe + TiO2.

Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.

As operações de amostragem de qualquer atividade que necessite de controle de qualidade são fundamentais tanto para fins de garantia da qualidade quanto para efeito comercial dos produtos. Na mineração de ferro não é diferente. Uma amostragem que carregue um vício de 0,20% no teor de Fe (%) pode representar uma perda de faturamento de aproximadamente US$226 mil para cada milhão de toneladas comercializadas aos preços atuais. Para fazer um bom plano de amostragem é necessário conhecer o grau de heterogeneidade ou variação de qualidade (sW) do minério a ser amostrado. Segundo Pierre Maurice Gy, um dos mais renomados especialistas em amostragem de minérios em geral, a forma mais indicada para estimar a sW é o método do variograma. Neste trabalho usamos a metodologia do variograma, com base na Norma Técnica ABNT ISO 3084:2003, para estimar a sW do minério tipo Sinter Feed produzido na Mina de Serra Azul da ArcelorMittal.

Ontario Power Generation is building a 10.4-km water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Canada. The tunnel is a two-pass, cast-in-place prestressed concrete-lined pres-sure tunnel with a nominal internal diameter of 12.7 m. It is mostly situated within the Queenston formation which swells in contact with fresh water and has very aggressive groundwater. Tunneling in this material presents challenges in both design and construction. The tunnel design includes for a membrane to eliminate the potential for rock swelling and to protect the concrete liner from the ground conditions. A unique three-stage Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) is being used and is expected to provide an equitable method of dealing with any variations in subsurface conditions.

"Control of analytical data quality is usually referred to in the mining industry as Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC), and involves the monitoring of sample quality and quantification of analytical accuracy and precision. QAQC procedures normally involve using sample duplicates and specially prepared standards whose grade is known. Numerous case studies indicate that reliable control of sample precision is achieved by using approximately 5% to 10% of field duplicates and 3% to 5% of pulp duplicates. These duplicate samples should be prepared and analyzed in the primary laboratory.Bias in the analytical results can be identified by inclusion of 3% to 5% of the standard in each sample batch. Several different standards are used, with values spanning the practical range of grades in the actual samples. A blank (a sample in which the concentration of metal of interest is below detection limit) should also be included. Standard samples alone cannot identify biases introduced during sample preparation, and therefore approximately 5% of the duplicate samples (coarse rejects and pulp) should be processed and assayed at another, external, reputable laboratory.This paper discusses techniques used for estimation of errors in precision and accuracy, and overviews diagnostic tools. It is shown that one of the most commonly used methods, the Thompson-Howarth technique, produces consistently lower results than other methods. These results reflect the nature of this method, which relies on the assumption of a normally distributed error, and thus produces biased results when errors have a skewed distribution. This study concurs with the suggestion of Stanley and Lawie (2007: Exploration and Mining Geology, v. 16, p. 265-274) to use the average coefficient of variation (CVAVR(%)) as the universal measure of relative precision error in mine geology applications: Le contrôle de la qualité des données analytiques est habituellement désigné sous l’appellation d’Assurance et Contrôle de la Qualité (ACQ), elle implique le suivi de la qualité des échan¬tillons et la quantification de la reproductibilité et la précision analytiques. "The Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group (GMSG) currently supports nine individual industry working groups focused on developing standards and guidelines for the mining industry. In 2013 the GMSG established the Industrial Comminution Efficiency (ICE) working group to develop freely available guidelines for plant operators to quantify the operating efficiency of industrial comminution circuits. This initiative has engaged a diverse group of representatives from mining companies, equipment vendors, consultants and metallurgical laboratories with vast experience and capabilities in the field of comminution. The GMSG has issued the first two guidelines from the ICE working group in 2015–2016, with the third guideline having completed the approvals process and being in the final stages of editing ahead of release later in 2016.Two of the ICE guidelines present methods to quantify comminution circuit efficiency, and a complementary guideline describes best practice methods to collect the necessary samples and data to furnish these assessments. Collectively the guidelines cover sampling, survey data collection, laboratory testing procedures and calculation processes to allow the user to generate a relative circuit efficiency factor for the comminution circuit at the time of survey. The reference energy consumption is calculated considering the measured F80, P80 and ore strength at the time of survey, using either or both of the Bond or Morrell methods presented in GMSG guidelines dedicated to each method. The guidelines consequently provide the end user with practical tools to perform circuit efficiency analysis and to readily quantify the impact of optimisation efforts.This paper presents the content of the three ICE guidelines and describes their intended application.Citation:Giblett, A and Daniel, M, 2016. In this paper, the surrounding rocks and the supports in a longwall are taken as an integral, i.e. a system. The structural characteristics and behavior of the system are discussed based on in-situ observations. A set of equations, which describe the interaction among the support, immediate roof and main roof, are developed. These equations can be used to design the longwall powered supports more reasonably and economically.

The structural changes in solutionized AA2618 during natural aging and their effects on subsequent artificial aging were investigated by hardness measurements, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and transmission electron microscopy. The changes in lattice parameter and hardness during natural aging indicate that copper-enriched clusters form in the earliest stage, followed by the formation of magnesium-enriched clusters and coppermagnesium co-clusters. Prior natural aging consistently weakened the hardening during subsequent artificial aging at 180, 200 and 230 °C but had no effects on artificial aging at 150 °C. The decreased age hardening was attributed to the reversion of small clusters/zones that formed during prior natural aging. The lattice parameter exhibited erratic changes with increasing artificial aging time, reflecting the complex sequence of the reversion and precipitation.
