Limestone, including dolomite, is the most widely used of all rocks - nearly 300 million tons annually in the United States alone. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of localities. Because of its attractiveness, substantiality, and durability it is employed extensively as a building stone. In crushed and broken form it is used for concrete aggregate and railroad ballast and in highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, and a host of chemical and industrial processes. This paper proposes to furnish general information on the origin and occurrence of limestone and dolomite, chief production centers, major uses, and methods of quarrying and preparing stone for market. Footnote references will guide the reader to sources of more complete information.

"Abstract -The Jinqingding gold deposit, situated in the east Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province, is typical of the pyrite-quartz vein gold deposits in the Muping-Rushan gold belt of China . The gold deposit is controlled by a great NNE fracture zone and is composed of several lenticular orebodies within the fracture zone occurring in the Kunyushan granite massif. The Kunyushan granite massif was formed by the replacement of the Archean Jiaodong group.The main minerals associated with gold are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; the gangue minerals are dominated by quartz, sericite, microcline and calcite. The mineralizing event can be divided into four stages: (1) pyrite-quartz; (2) quartz-pyrite; (3) siderite-polymetallic sulfides; and (4) calcite-quartz. Gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum in stage 1 and stage II. There are some evident differences between pyrite from major stages of gold mineralization and that from minor stages; these include differences in crystal forms, size and composition of fluid inclusions.Wallrock alterations consist of sericitization, silicification, pyritization and potash-feldspar alteration. Five alteration zones can be distinguished from unaltered granite (zone 0) to vein lodes (zone IV). Au and Ag increase rapidly from zone 0 to zone IV, Cu increases continuously, while Pb and Zn increase slowly. R-type geological factor analysis indicates that the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn bear a close relationship to wallrock alteration."

The heat capacities of four crystalline silicates of barium ( BaSiO3 , BaSiO4 , Ba Si¸0 , and BaSi₂0 ) and two crystalline silicates of strontium (SrSio and Sr₂Sio ) were measured over the temperature range from 51 ° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the entropies at 298.15 ° K. The entropy values were joined with known heats of formation to obtain the free energies of formation of the silicates with respect to their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K.

The chelating reagents are used as effective collectors in wolframite flotation, and certain metal cations need to be added using chelating collectors so as to activate valuable minerals and obtain good flotation indexes. Different metal cations will result in different reactivity with collectors, in order to select the effective activator in BHA flotation of wolframite, the activation effectiveness of different metal cations on wolframite ((Fe,Mn)WO4) flotation were studied using pure minerals. The results showed that the wolframite activation by Pb2+was the best among the selected cations. The maximum flotation recovery of wolframite was found to be 95.58 % under conditions of 100mg/LBHA and 1×10-4mol/L of Pb2+at pH 9. The dosage of Pb2+needs to be controlled in an optimum range. Also, the activation mechanism of Pb2+ on BHA flotation of wolframite was investigated by measurements of contact angle, zeta potential, adsorption capacity and IR spectroscopy. It was found that Pb2+ could chemically adsorb onto the wolframite surface improving the flotability of wolframite and enhancing the adsorption of BHA on wolframite. When the dosages of BHA and Pb2+ were 100 mg/L and 1×10-4 mol/L, the adsorption quantity of BHA on wolframite sharply increased up to 0.30 mg/L at pH 9 compared with wolframite treated with only BHA.

This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

With the rapid acceleration of the cost of shovel dippers and major standard shovel clipper rebuild components, maintenance management at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Bingham Canyon mine initiated a dipper maintenance and rebuild program. The program focused on extending the service life of the shovel dipper, reducing field labor in maintaining dippers, and lowering shovel dipper rebuild costs. While comprehensive evaluation of the program is still underway, preliminary benefits of the program indicate: •Reduced field ,gelding for shovel dipper field maintenance, •Fewer dipper rebuild units entering the shop, and •Reduced dipper rebuild costs per unit.

Previous models describing the aggregation of polymer coated particles fail to take into account the fact that there are a limited number of sites onto which a polymer segment can adsorb, called ?active? sites. Thus, the collision efficiency is a factor not only of the fractional surface coverage, but also of the number of active sites. In this study, a physical model of the flocculation system was devised in which the number of these sites could be varied, in order to study the effect on particle aggregation.

An experimental investigation has been carried out using a laboratory scale Denver flotation cell. For evaluation of cokeable coal of Alborze Sharghi coal washing plant, the full factorial method was used to statistically design and analyse the experiments. The 2 factorial interaction model were developed for combustible recovery and ash content as response and diesel dosage, conditioning time, feed percent solids and rotor speed as factors. Model validation and residual analysis were con-ducted and results indicated that the fitness, predictability power and residual distributions of models were good. The effect of parameters and interactions were examined and it has been demonstrated that rotor speed, solid percent and interaction between diesel dosage and solid percent were more important terms of all responses. A product with approximately 78% combustible recovery and 10% ash content was obtained at 4000gr/ton diesel fuel oil (high level), 30 sec conditioning time (low level), feed percent solids of 15% (low level) and 800 rpm rotor speed in appropriate condition.

This report describes the results of a research project carried out to investigate the feasibility of using transducer arrays, located on surface or in shallow boreholes, above an active coal mine to detect and locate the source of underground microseismic activity which normally occurs during mining. The initial stage of the project involves the design and development of a self-contained mobile microseismic monitoring facility capable of use in remote field locations. Following this a variety of transducers, and transducer field installation techniques were investigated to obtain optimum sensitivity and high signal-to-noise characteristics. Preliminary efforts were also undertaken to develop semi-automated techniques for analysis of microseismic field data. Using the facilities and techniques developed field studies were carried out at a number of surface locations over a central Pennsylvania coal mine operating at depths of the order of 500 feet. In particular studies were con-ducted over a previously mined development area, troubled by extensive problems of roof instability, and over two longwall panels during mining. Although many of the field studies were carried out during the development stage of the project, results in general have been most encouraging. Limited results were obtained over the development area, however excellent microseismic signals, correlating with underground strata instability, were detected over both long-wall areas, proving the general feasibility of surface monitoring techniques. More recent studies, carried out as part of a subsequent project, and utilizing modified geophone installation techniques at a third longwall site, have verified explicitly the feasibility of measuring underground microseismic activity from surface locations. Sections of typical field data are included in this report along with a brief review of the studies carried out at each of the field sites. Detailed analysis of data obtained at the second and third longwall test sites will be presented in a later report.

La presente investigación señala la relación entre el factor tiempo-concentración y la silicosis, a partir de los resultados obtenidos por la sección Ingeniería en su estudio de ambiente de trabajo con los hallazgos del examen realizado a los obreros en un yacimiento minera del sur peruano. Para dicha correlación, se consideró únicamente el subsuelo y el personal que lo labora, excluyendo todo lo relacionado con la superficie, a fin de no diluir la tasa de prevalencia de silicosis y por la diferencia que existe en el medio ambiente del trabajo de cada trabajador. La minera se encuentra a 4600 m.s.n.m y está compuesta por rocas volcánicas terciarias y metamórficas, donde la ventilación es de tipo natural, la extracción del mineral se efectúa por el nivel inferior mediante una locomotora y el personal minero carece de implementos de protección personal. De acuerdo a la exposición de polvo, concentración, contenido de sílice libre y datos de la minera, se concluyó que la tasa de prevalencia de la silicosis fue de 11% y estuvo asociada directamente a la exposición de polvo por ocupaciones y tiempo de trabajo.Por tanto, es necesario crear un programa de prevención de silicosis, donde se instale un sistema de tuberías de agua para la perforación en húmedo, se reduzca la jornada laboral a ocho horas, se emplee atomizadores de agua después de los disparos, efectuando las operaciones de cargo mineral en estado húmedo y por último, se realice un examen periódico a los trabajadores.

The characterization of rare-earth resources in 3D is now possible using high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) to describe ore texture and mineral phase composition. In addition, detailed texture analysis, including grain exposure and mineral association, can be described. Preliminary examination of a sample of Mountain Pass ore is reported to describe the spatial distribution of the mineral phases (calcite, barite and bastnaesite), particularly the grain size distribution of bastnaesite. The examination includes analysis of selected particle size classes to determine the appropriate size for liberation of the rare-earth mineral bastnaesite. Good liberation is expected to be achieved if the material is ground to a top size of -150 µm.

Major cities are not only the focal point for AustralianÆs work, leisure and homes, they also are the focal point for the flow of resources into the built environment, motor cars and transportation and urban consumables. The steady increases in æstockÆ and waste generation, in line with GDP growth, means that cities will become the mine sites of the future if the inherent value is recovered from these materials at end of life. The urban waste stream can be characterised as containing approximately nine per cent hydrocarbon-based materials; 57 per cent biomass-based material; 28 per cent fully mineralised materials that are inert, five per cent metals and less than one per cent of problematic materials that are potentially hazardous and toxic. In order to convert these wastes into value added inputs into the economy, a number of technological interventions are required. These æurban waste mining techniquesÆ revolve around source separation and material streaming. One issue that needs to be overcome when determining which mining technique to implement, is identifying the option that will deliver optimal value, both from a financial and a sustainability perspective. The difference between embodied energy and calorific value is a case in point. Highest net resource value (HNRV) is a concept that can assist in choosing between different resource recovery options. The assessment can be done at a strategic level, or can be used to work out material specific issues. For example, used tyres can be recovered for their energy content at an approximate cost of $120 per tonne, whereas mechanical processing of used tyres can deliver a net benefit of $192.

The ever -present danger of mine fires and the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions in underground mines make a well-equipped mine rescue station a valuable asset to any mining district . Rescue equipment without proper maintenance provides only false security , because neglect may make the apparatus unfit for use in an emergency . Promptness in fighting mine fires is important ; frequently the first 30 minutes of action are worth many hours later . Likewise , the equipment will be of little value if enough men trained in its use are not readily available . This circular points out how such protection has been provided in an Arizona mining district by establishing a well- organized , adequately equipped , central mine rescue station. ·

En este sentido, el presente texto describe la operación de este sistema en dicha concentradora, así como sus beneficios en la minería. El Sistema Experto se basa en una plataforma proporcionada por un software, al cual ha sido integrada en forma de modelos matemáticos y lógicas de control, la experiencia operativa de profesionales y técnicos de la Concentradora Toquepala. De forma que las acciones del Sistema Experto están orientadas a maximizar el tonelaje procesado, manteniendo en la pulpa producida para la flotación, así como las condiciones de calidad adecuadas para optimizar las recuperaciones de los elementos valiosos.

A high-pressure laboratory elution rig was commissioned to simulate industrial Zadra and AARL elution conditions for the stripping of gold, silver and mercury from loaded activated carbon. It was found that cyanide was essential for the efficient elution of both mercury and silver, while gold was found to elute most effectively in hot, low-ionic strength solutions. Therefore, the standard AARL-type elution, which implements a cyanide soak and water elution, results in a lower recovery of mercury and silver from the carbon. No single set of conditions was found whereby gold, silver and mercury can all be effectively eluted in a single step. However, sequential elution conditions can efficiently recover all metals and provide a potential approach for separating these metals.

Por ello, el presente texto revisa el panorama actual de la industria minera y metalúrgica de América Latina y plantea mejorar la industria a través de establecer contacto directo con todas las instituciones de técpicos mineros y metalurgistas de los países latinoamericanos para intercambio de publicaciones, la estimulación de la organización de reuniones técnicas regionales y el diálogo de los problemas técnicos y económicos que afecten al desarrollo latinoamericano de la industria minero - metalúrgica.

The Dumont deposit is a large (1179 Mt reserve), low-grade (0.27 per cent nickel) nickel sulfide project located in the Abitibi region 25 km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation (RNC) acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the deposit through to feasibility. The disseminated nickel sulfide and alloy mineralisation is hosted within the serpentinised dunite subzone of the Dumont Sill; a differentiated, pervasively serpentinised, ultramafic sill of komatiitic affinity. Pentlandite ((Ni,Fe)9S8), heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and awaruite (Ni2.5Fe) are the dominant nickel-bearing metallic phases and can be recovered by conventional methods (flotation, magnetic separation). Non-recoverable nickel is also present within serpentine and olivine of the silicate matrix.A detailed mineralogical program including 1420 QEMSCAN« samples and 4400 electron microprobe points was undertaken to increase the understanding of the nickel deportment in the various recoverable and non-recoverable phases in a spatial context across the deposit. A total of 105 metallurgical tests have been performed under a standard procedure which have linked the mineralogy to metallurgical performance. This has allowed the creation and modelling of geometallurgical domains on a block-by-block basis to understand the recovery variation and metallurgical performance throughout the deposit. Understanding the spatial variability of Ni deportment in recoverable and non-recoverable phases through mineralogy is the key to understanding metallurgical performance, thus unlocking the value of the Dumont deposit and other large tonnage low-grade ultramafic nickel deposits.CITATION:Sciortino, M, Muinonen, J, Korczak, J and St-Jean, A, 2013. "Construction activities in major projects that involve deep excavations necessitate the use of vertical walls surrounding the construction site to play an important role as earth retention system. The walls are usually partially penetrating impervious walls which can increase the efficiency of the ground water control system that usually consists of number of partially penetrating wells. The analysis and design of such system requires 3D numerical simulation. The aim of this study is to develop simplified semi-empirical approach to analyze and design such system. The analyzed model is a single well in a square site that is surrounded by impervious walls along the perimeter of the site in an unconfined aquifer. The results of the parametric analysis are presented in this paper aiming to assess and understand the factors that influence dewatering in terms of ground water or drawdown profile surrounding the well. The parametric analysis is carried out using the 3D finite difference software. The parametric analysis comprises with more than 550 cases calculated. The study involved the parameters; well penetration depth, impervious wall penetration depth, size of the construction pit, coefficient of permeability, well yield and well location or distance between well center to impervious wall edge.IntroductionThe presence of groundwater in a site may have impact on the construction processes involved during the course of project construction, especially those projects that involve deep excavations. Deep excavations, especially in urban areas, require the construction of supported walls all around the site perimeter to ensure the stability of the excavation. In most of cases, the constructed walls are relatively impervious. Depending on the ground and site conditions, the walls are not penetrating all the way down through to the bottom of the aquifer and thus the walls are partially penetrating walls. The presence of ground water necessitates the lowering of the groundwater to levels below the bottom of the excavation to ensure working in dry. This paper focuses on groundwater control systems that consist of deep wells inside square areas enclosed by impervious walls partially penetrating unconfined aquifers. The wells are partially penetrating the aquifer, as well. There are many factors or parameters that are related to the configurations of the components of the system that may influence the drawdown of a well in such groundwater control system. This paper is a part of a comprehensive study that aims to development of a simple method for estimating the drawdown of dewatering system of the described configuration. In order to achieve such a major goal, a 3D finite difference model is developed for the problem in hand. A comprehensive parametric analysis was then carried out to investigate the influence of all the parameters on the drawdown of a deep well in such groundwater control system. This paper describes the problem, the model, the parametric analysis including the involved parameters. The paper, then, demonstrate the results of the analysis showing the influence of the studied parameters on the drawdown of a single well."

Abstract The degree of cathodic protection of steel and the anode corrosion rate were determined when anodes and waters of different compositions were used at temperatures similar to those in domestic hot water tanks. Twenty different anode materials, sixteen of them magnesium-zinc-aluminium alloys, were immersed in six different synthetic waters resembling those to be found in various parts of Canada. The results showed that (1) both the degree of cathode protection and the average anode corrosion rate are affected materially by the composition of the anode material and of the water; (2) poor cathode protection is associated with low anode corrosion rate; (3) when the cathode is fully protected, the anode corrosion rate may be comparatively low or comparatively high, depending upon the composttion of the water; (4) an important relationship exists between the magnesium content of the preferred anode and the composition of the water; (5) the degree of protection is increased as the SO4 + Cl concentration of the water is increased and thus as its specific resistance is decreased. Introduction Fairly recently, the use of the active metal magnesium for the cathodic protection of less active metals has received a considerable amount of attention. This interest has been stimulated by the fact that the wartime demand for magnesium was greatly in excess of the present peacetime demand and there is a natural desire to continue operating the large magnesium plants which were built during the war. Information regarding the use of zinc and aluminium for this purpose also has been published. There is a great demand for domestic hot-water tanks which will resist corrosion satisfactorily. This problem is rather complex in view of the fact that the composition of the water used in such tanks varies greatly and depends upon the locality. The present investigation deals with the effect of water composition and anode composition on the cathodic protection of steel under conditions approaching those which exist in hot water tanks.
