Lateral pressure provided by caving rocks plays an important role in keeping the stability of the sidewall rock mass and controlling the rock movement. Taking Xilinhot Fluorite Mine as an engineering background, we studied the control mechanism of the granular media lateral pressure on the rock movement by combining physical experiments, theoretical analysis, and field monitoring. The results indicated that with the increase of the granular media depth, the lateral pressure provided by the static granular media presented two stages of rapid growth and slow growth. The lateral pressure on the footwall was negatively correlated with the dip angle of the orebody, and the lateral pressure on the hanging wall was positively correlated with the dip angle of the orebody. Ore drawing only caused the granular media lateral pressure near the drawing point to decrease. As the granular media moved, the granular media lateral pressure outside the pressure reduction area further increased, and this part of the granular media would play a key role in limiting surface rock movement. On this basis, the improved calculation formula of GLMP was given, which could be better applied to calculate the GLMP and critical granular media column with different dip angles. The action mechanism of the GLMP in the control of the surface rock movement was clarified. The granular body in the collapse pit was mainly composed of three parts: the bottom loose granular media column, the middle compaction granular media column, and the upper critical granular media column. The critical granular media column was the most important area to control surface subsidence and rock movement. Finally, through field practice, after effective filling of the collapse pit, the surface vertical displacement of the hanging wall and footwall was decreased by 56.8% and 55.6%, respectively, and the control effect of surface rock movement was remarkable.

Anode casting has been in operation for two years in Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting's Flin Flon smelter. The new plant allows all casting to be done on one shift and so achieves considerable labour savings. The equipment and operations are described. Some important features are as follows: very consistent anode weights by the use of the load-cell controlled casting ladle; excellent mould life ; very low reject rate; and trouble-free take -off tower. Some of the start-up problems are described and an outline is given of the main operator functions. Data on labour, propane and maintenance costs are presented.

After almost 60 years of application in this country froth flotation is still by far the most important process for concentrating metallic ores as well as a number of nonmetallic ores including fluorspar, phosphate rock, and potash. Its use on iron ores and coal is increasing. In the metals groups the largest plants and the greatest progress are found in copper and molybdenum mills, and the section of this paper that deals with applications will be found most pertinent to that field. During its long reign the flotation process has passed through several phases of evolution and has achieved progress in economy, efficiency, and simplicity of operation. Much of today's success in the flotation of low-grade ores can be attributed to that progress. Even more important to us than our ability to cope with today's conditions are tomorrow's problems, which we can contemplate with some prescience and confidence. Our annual production of copper, lead, zinc, and molybdenum--to mention only the most important metals occurring in the U.S. as sulphides--must be held at a high level in the face of a declining grade of ore. It is probable that the tonnage of such ores mined and processed will double in this country before the turn of the century. Not only will many of the existing flotation mills be enlarged again and again, but larger mills will be built here and abroad to meet our needs. At this moment, in fact, there are at least three proposed new foreign mills or expansions that envision 100,000 tons daily milling rate on copper ores. Air compressor explosions that are caused by the ignition of combustible vapor mixtures cannot be explained by a single reaction mechanism or sequence of events. Explosions have been caused by the sudden release of large quantities of lubricating oil, by the rapid vaporization of oil that had accumulated slowly in high-pressure piping, and by the production of decomposition products from carbonaceous deposits. Ignitions can be caused by the heat produced in a catalytic reaction, in a compression process, or when a shock wave is propagated through a combustible vapor-air mixture. The frequency of these ignitions can be minimized by establishing proper maintenance and cleaning schedules. Further study is needed to satisfactorily correlate the various factors involved in compressor explosions.

The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale leaching tests with recycled spent copper electrolytes and copper-nickel mattes produced from the Minnesota Duluth Complex concentrates. This report describes the first stage of an overall two-stage leach operation. The objective of this research was to determine the matte-leach technology required to convert spent copper electrolyte into an enriched nickel liquor suitable for a nickel refinery and there-fore essentially free of copper, iron, and sulfuric acid. The experimental variables investigated were matte composition, particle size, spent electrolyte content, pulp concentration, oxygenation, temperature, and time. The time required to produce an enriched purified nickel liquor decreased with increasing pulp concentration, temperature, and oxygenation, but increased with increasing particle size and electrolyte copper and acid content. Nickel-rich (about 50 g/l) liquors at a pH of about 4 and containing less than 1 g/l of copper and iron were produced at 70° C by leaching minus 325-mesh low-iron (less than 5 pct) matte for 8 hours with spent electrolyte containing 22.4 g/l Cu, 28.9 g/l Ni, less than 0.1 g/l Fe, and 50 g/l H2S04 at a pulp concentration of 1 kg of matte per liter of spent electrolyteo Varying the nickel content of the spent electrolyte from 11 to 101 g/l appeared to have no appreciable influence on the matte leaching characteristics.

Coal mine bounces and bursts are major problems facing U.S. mine operators. Bounces and bursts have the potential to inflict severe injury on mining personnel, damage equipment, and cause mine closures. High- stress conditions, at or near the working face, are the common denominator in the burst problem, If mine operators can locate high-stress and potentially burst-prone zones, they can then use stress-relief methods to control the burst condition. One method of locating the high-stress zone is the probe-hole-drilling or drilling-yield method. Probe-hole drilling is used frequently in Europe, the U.S.S.R., and Japan as a means for locating potential burst zones. Consequently, the Bureau of Nines performed tests in the laboratory and in a deep, burst-prone western mine to analyze probe-hole drilling. The in-mine method, very simply, involves drilling a hole into the coal seam and measuring the volume of cuttings obtained. A certain volume of cuttings can be expected from a certain diameter and length drill hole. A significant increase in the volume of cuttings means the zone around that particular hole is highly stressed. In-mine use of the drilling yield method has shown it to be a useful tool for locating highly stressed and potential burst zones. Results from laboratory testing confirm that high stress applied tri-axially to a cube specimen will cause a significant increase in the volume of cuttings from a small-diameter drill hole in the specimen.

Attempting to analyze a 25-year forecast after less than a third of the time has elapsed may seem premature. The President's Materials Policy Com- mission's report necessarily painted with a broad brush and made no claim for pinpoint accuracy in its predictions. More importantly for present purposes, it made no attempt to predict the detailed courses of production and consumption during the period forecasted. Several statistical highs and lows may very well lie between now and 1957, so comparing recent figures with points taken from the report on a straight-line basis would be illogical. Moreover, the report assumed that the general trend of consumption-domestic and foreign-would be upward. Contrarily, domestic figures were lower in 1957 than in 1950. Therefore, to project curves from 1950 through 1957 leads to conclusions that are probably false. Many in the industry would feel more uncertain about forecasting 1975 domestic conditions now than they would have been in 1950, even though nearly a third of the 25 years has elapsed. In making comparisons, several statistical problems are encountered. The Paley report figures for 1950 were estimated in several cases and corrected figures vary as much as 10 pct. For example, the report placed 1950 lead consumption at 800,000 tons, whereas actual consumption was 885,000 tons. Obviously, in comparing more recent figures with the report's projections, adjustments must be made for positions taken in error from the start. Over the long pull, such discrepancies will probably be insignificant, but they must be noted in comparing short-term changes.

I have been asked to discuss the "Development of the Twin Buttes Mine for Production." This property, which is a large low-grade open pit copper mine about 25 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, was recently brought into production by The Anaconda Company under a long-term lease agreement with the Banner Mining Company. Since the scope of this paper is limited to the subject broadly indicated by its title I will confine discussion of historical, environmental and other general matters to a brief summary sufficient, I hope, to establish a background of those conditions which influenced our approach to the technical and economic problems that faced us at Twin Buttes. The paper deals primarily with our studies and activities related to the solution of these problems and with the resulting engineering and business decisions that were taken - decisions which culminated last September in the initial commercial operation of another major open pit copper producer unique and interesting in several respects.

New global industry standards and regulatory changes regarding mining tailings management are driving installation of tailings filtration plants to decommission existing tailings dams and implement dry stacking. Target of this project was to reduce ultrafine slime tailings deposition. Previous investigation at Samarco concentrator has showed a 35% decrease in tailings filtration throughput when feeding a mix of 95% flotation tailings with 5% slime tailings (compared with 100% flotation tailings), also worsening geotechnical aspects such as material workability during dry staking. Industrial trials using a proper filter aid at tailings filtration plant feeding a mix of 94% flotation tailing and 6% slime tailing (equivalent to 30% of total slime generation) have provided filtration performance maintenance (throughput and cake moisture), and dry stacking the dewatered material. Results achieved will enable life expansion of existing slime disposal structures, as well as potential life of mining extension. Furthermore, reagent chemistry influence is discussed by the light of geotechnical aspects, which has been showing improved KPIs, such as workability, compressibility and permeability.

This paper describes the 6, 000 tpd, three stage haulage system at the Ozark Lead Company's mine in southeastern Missouri. It details the methods and problems pertinent to the loading, hauling, sorting, crushing, storing and hoisting of waste rock and ores obtained from underground development headings and production areas. The Ozark Lead Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kennecott Copper Corporation. Its mine is located nine miles south of Bunker in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" mining district. Development started in May, 1964, by drilling a seven foot diameter (six foot cased), 1, 250 foot development-ventilation shaft. Drifting began in August, 1965, to obtain a bulk ore sample, to test ore continuity, and to drive two mine levels while the pre-grouted production shaft was being sunk. Over 7, 900 feet of 12 by 24 foot drifting was done from this small shaft. In March, 1966, a 20 foot diameter, three compartment, concrete lined production shaft was collared. It intersected existing development headings at a depth of 1, 195 feet in April, 1967, and was completed along with a concentrator and other facilities in June, 1968. Mine production began that month, with 5, 000 tpd reached in 1970.\

This report documents efforts to design, develop and test a training approach which would assist front-end loader operators in the acquisition of skills and awareness to reduce the probability of their involvement in accidents in the mining environment. The goal of this project was to prepare and use (on a trial basis) a training method and materials which would be generally applicable to any loader and surface mining operation while at the same time, be adjustable by mine personnel to meet the specific needs of each mining operation. This effort resulted in the Front-End Loader Training System, a structured, performance-based training approach with diverse instructional aids and classroom and on-machine training experiences. Validation of the System at a large western mine demonstrated the utility and flexibility of the training approach and materials.

The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency. THE first difficulty mentioned is that in some instances two or more beds of coal separated by sandstone or slate rocks of considerable thickness in one part of a basin, are found running together in another part. Of course, we may happen to strike first the part of the basin where there is but a single seam, and in this case the bed would appear to divide into two or more branches within a short distance. Such cases are not rare in the anthracite coal-fields. I would suggest as an explanation of this phenomenon the gradual sinking of the peat-marsh-the embryo coal-bed-on one side, and the moving forward of the marsh, so that on one part of the bed the formation of peat would still be progressing, while another part, being under water, would be covered with mud and sand. Thus we have different portions of the same bed of different ages. Now if the sinking of the marsh be stopped for a time, the bed will become thicker in the portions left exposed, and if the sinking now changes in direction, so that the part that had previously gone down com¬mences to rise, we should have the phenomenon of a bed, continuous throughout, with one portion overlying another, and separated from it by rock strata. These are exactly the conditions observed in splitting beds. While one side of the lake is sinking, and the peat-marsh moving on in that direction, the other side may be rising,

AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. This water also contains an appreciable quantity of flotation reagents, and is more effective for flotation than supply water.In the development of a scheme for the disposal of large quantities of residues, several of the more important factors for consideration are:(a) Tonnage to be handled.(b) Grain size of residues and pulp density.(c) Dewatering of residues and return of clear water to mill circuit.(d) Possible uses of residues.-A varying proportion of sand residues is used for underground filling, and to a limited extent for yoncrete making and other engineering work.(e) Choice of a suitable dumping area. - Before deciding upon this area consideration will be given to possible future operations so that the dump will not be likely to interfere with any development which may be necessary. THE territory under particular consideration in this article comprises portions of La Plata and Montezuma Counties, situated in the southwestern corner of Colorado, and around the base of the La Plata Mountains. (See Fig. 1.) In southeastern Utah and northeastern Arizona there are several mountain systems whose origin and structure are practically identical with the La Platas so that ore occurrences found in the latter can be hopefully looked for in the former. With this assumption, there is an area around the laccolithic ranges which offers promise for a successful exploration for gold ores. Ore occurrences of the Silverton, Telluride, Rico, or Ouray Districts will not be discussed, although in these areas the Mesozoic sediments are more or less involved within the ore-bearing complex. These have been intensively studied and developed. The idea is to set forth what my mining experience has been within the largely unaltered . Mesozoic horizon which remains around the extreme bases of the La Plazas. This, until recent years, has been almost entirely neglected by prospectors and operators and, so far as similar territory in Utah and Arizona is concerned, so remains.

This work has as its objective to characterize ceramic bodies formulated with ornamental rock waste and two different clays to produce ceramic paver. Specimens were made by uniaxial press-molding at 20 MPa and then fired at 950 and 1050oC respectively. The determined technological properties were: plasticity, dry bulk density, linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that the type of the clay has strong influence on the properties of interest for heavy clay ceramics. The investigated waste must be incorporated in small amounts to avoid increasing in the porosity of the ceramics.

"Detailed design of an extensive deep mixing (DM) scheme using the Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) technique was completed for foundation support of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls for Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) at Bish Cove, British Columbia, Canada. The design was based on the provision of soil-cement structures, constructed in highly variable subsurface conditions that consisted of thick deposits of fine-grained soils overlying granular soils, and required to meet project-specific performance criteria, to support the MSE walls. The design, consisting of rectangular CSM panels constructed to form barrettes connecting to a longitudinal wall of continuous CSM panels, was configured to manage the distribution of stresses and strains that could be developed within the soil-cement structure.The results from 2D finite element analyses were used to determine the necessary arrangement and properties of the CSM panels to accommodate localized areas of relatively high shear, tensile and compressive stresses within the soil-cement structure. The relationships between unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus for fine-grained and granular soil-cement structures obtained from the Bish Cove data were compared with published references and were found to be significantly different in the higher strength range materials.BACKGROUNDDeep Mixing design was completed for the development of the Kitimat LNG Facility located in Bish Cove, British Columbia, for support of two relatively high MSE walls and associated bulk earthwork operations. Deep mixing was necessary to treat the very weak native deposits in-situ to meet project performance requirements and physical constraints without the need for significant excavation and disposal work. The DM design was undertaken on the basis of adoption of the CSM technique for in-situ ground improvement of the native foundation soils which consisted of very soft to soft fine-grained marine deposits and loose to compact sandy silt to silty sand, overlying dense sand and gravel (Fig. 1). The DM area is located immediately upslope of the Bish Cove beach area, and is “L” shaped in plan, approximately 300 m long by approximately 28.8 m wide (parallel to the beach area) and 165 m long by an average width of 21.0 m (perpendicular to the beach area). The depth of the DM ranged from about 5.0 m to 30.7 m with typically 2.0 m embedment into dense granular soils. Details of the design philosophy, including an overview of the DM design and the project background information are presented by Li et al. (2014a). Details of the construction aspects of the Kitimat LNG deep mixing are presented by Wilson et al. (2014)."

The "Pile Prediction Event" at the ASCE GeoInstitute's Deep Foundation Conference in February 2002 involved prediction of drivability and capacity of three 14m long, 324mm diameter, closed-toe pipe piles driven into loose to compact fine sand to slightly silty sand. Predictors were provided the results of two soil borings and three cone penetrometer tests, as well as type and model of hammer to be used for the pile driving. A total of 33 persons submitted predictions. As to penetration resistance distribution, many predictions were far below actually observed values. As to capacity in compression, the predicted values ranged from 270KN through 2,340KN with a mean of 1,070KN. As to capacity in tension, the predicted values ranged from 100KN through 1,650KN. The maximum load applied to the compression pile in the static loading test was 1,25OKN, at which no more reaction load was available. The reaction system for the tension test failed early in the test. CAPWAP analysis on End-of-Driving blows showed capacities at the end of the driving for the push and pull piles of 670KN, and 710KN, respectively. No restrike tests were made. Additional CPT soundings indicate that the pile driving had densified the soil. Static analysis and calculations from the CPT indicated that capacities ranged from 1,000KN through 2,000KN. The paper presents the data and discusses the various methods of determining pile capacity and addresses influence of set-up Lessons useful for future similar events are indicated.

Rock bolts are commonly used to reinforce ground in underground mining and civil tunnel environments. Rock bolts serve two main functions: i) they suspend large, loose blocks of ground, and ii) provide a protective pressure arch to restrain the deformation in an excavated void. Automated and precise tracking of rock bolt positions can assist with the operational success of ground support by reducing the amount of labour required in current manual practices. A point cloud is a large list of x, y and z coordinates in three-dimensional space, that when visualised, show a precise 3D representation of a physical environment. Point cloud data can be collected using accurate LiDAR scanners. These scanners can be mounted on a stationary tripod or on a moving vehicle. A key way point cloud data is used is in the bolt detection project being completed in conjunction with UNSW Sydney, which aims to provide an automated location of underground rock bolts from LiDAR scans. The immediate challenge with identifying rock bolts is that they constitute a very small portion of the data set amounting to approximately 0.01 per cent of some of the collected civil tunnel data. The process of detecting rock bolts from point clouds therefore requires a quick elimination of large background data while still preserving the bolt data. A further challenge is that the geometry of underground environments can often be very complex and non-uniform. To overcome these challenges, a two-step coarse to fine deep learning approach is taken. The first step is a coarse background elimination step aimed at removing as much of the background data as possible. The second step is a finer classification method, which uses deep learning to further segment the bolts from the remaining background. Additionally, a computer vision module is being implemented, which is expected to increase the detection rate by adding another dimension to the training data set.
