This paper , which describes the mining methods and practices at the Hayden Creek lead mine of St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeast Missouri , is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The Hayden Creek mine is in the W 1/2 sec . 7 , T. 36 N. , R. 4 E. , St. Francois County , Mo. , about 1 mile southwest of the town of Frankclay ( fig . 1) . The mine is on the west edge of the mining district known as the Lead Belt . However , neither the ore body nor the underground workings are connected with those of any other mine in the district . In contrast with most operations in the district , underground haulage is entirely trackless , and nearly complete delineation of the large , well -defined ore body by drilling permitted comprehensive planning of development and mining in advance of shaft sinking . The ore differs in character and occurrence from that of the main ore deposits in the Lead Belt in that the lead mineral , galena , occurs in the dolomitic matrix enclosing granite boulders instead of in dolomite limestone .

"The cost of occupational injuries and diseases in the mining industry in Quebec was estimated for the period of 2010 to 2012. The method used takes into account the financial and human costs assumed by employers, workers, and the community. To better direct research and prevention toward issues with the most significant consequences, the results are presented in various ranking tables, which stakeholders might find useful.RÉSUMÉ Le coût des accidents du travail et des maladies professionnelles dans l’industrie minière au Québec a été estimé pour la période 2010-2012. La méthode utilisée prend en compte les coûts financiers et humains endossés par les employeurs, les travailleurs et la communauté. Afin de mieux orienter les recherches et la prévention vers les problèmes ayant les plus graves conséquences, les résultats sont présentés dans divers tableaux de classement, qui seront d’une grande utilité aux parties prenantes. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is much safer today than it was 30 or 40 years ago, mainly due to a more qualified workforce, the use of automated equipment, and a corporate culture more focused on occupational health and safety (OHS); however, the number and the severity of occupational injuries and diseases continue to make this industry one of the most hazardous. In the province of Quebec, the mining industry accounts for approximately 0.4% of paid workers but is the source of 4% of fatal work accidents. It is, therefore, important to continue the prevention efforts already underway in the mining industry.The difficult global economy, which has affected the mining industry in the last few years, is an opportunity to reaffirm that sound management of OHS can have a positive impact on companies’ productivity and profitability. Occupational injuries and diseases are costly for the companies concerned and for society as a whole. Reducing their occurrence makes it possible to reduce not only the size of workers’ compensation board contributions but also several other financial and human costs."

In the course of an investigation3 of the flow of gases through beds of broken solids the author obtained a number of data .on the specific volume of beds of broken solids of variously mixed sizes. A mathematical theory of the limiting conditions has been developed and some generalizations have been made for intermediate cases. A more definite knowledge of the relation between space occupied and size composition would be valuable to all those who are handling large quantities of broken materials. Such knowledge might be advantageously applied to the operation of a coke oven. For example, the output of the oven depends in general upon the number of pounds of coal which can be put in the oven at charging. It is known that the capacity of one battery of ovens was increased several per cent by slightly increasing the proportion of fine material in the charge.

The western Mesabi range nonmagnetic taconites containing about 34 percent Fe were evaluated by the Bureau of Mines in a 900-pound-per-hour pilot plant employing a selective flocculation-desliming-cationic flotation technique. The flotation step was a reverse flotation process and involved the flotation of the gangue minerals. The objective of the research was to increase the availability of domestic raw materials for the iron and steel industry. The beneficiated ores yielded concentrates containing 62 to 64 percent Fe and less than 5.5 percent Si02 with accompanying iron recoveries that averaged about 75 percent. Comparable flotation results were obtained with either fresh or 80 to 90 percent reclaimed water. Recycled waters having turbidities as high as 5,000 ppm Si02 did not affect the flotation process. Reclaimed waters containing residual calcium contents of less than 10 ppm gave better flotation concentrates than those containing 15 ppm.

OTHERS here are far better qualified than I to discuss some of the specific proposals for government regulation of the oil industry. I shall make no attempt to carry oil to Oklahoma. The question of public control, however, is inherent in other branches of the mineral industry in varying degrees, and my comments will be directed mainly toward some of the trends affecting the mineral industry as a whole, as a background for your more specific consideration of oil legislation. A proud American tradition has been the insistence on freedom of competition, on equality of economic opportunity, on a policy of laissez faire. Nowhere has this principle been given wider application than in the mineral industry. The mineral field has been open to all comers, and the job of mineral exploitation has naturally attracted daring and independent spirits. The laws governing conditions of discovery and development, as well as the anti- trust laws, have been devised to foster the spirit of private initiative. The result has been the building of a mineral industry on a scale never before approximated anywhere in the world. The impetus thus gained, the methods, the technique, the financial resources, have been projected be- yond our boundaries and have made the American mineral industry the purveyor to the world for many essential commodities and first in the exploitation of the world's minerals. Our habits of individual self-reliance and success are deeply ingrained, and there is hardly an individual in the entire mineral field who does not instinctively recoil fro111 the extension of collective control, whether public or private.

En los últimos 20 años la operación minera en Antamina ha profundizado su tajo, el stripping ratio y la distancia de acarreo de desmonte, se han seguido incrementando para mantener la producción metálica. Tal como ocurre en las todas operaciones mineras de tajo abierto, se espera en los próximos años un incremento sustancial de la cantidad de desmonte a remover conforme se avance las siguientes extensiones de vida. En adición a esta situación, los recientes compromisos globales de reducción de emisiones de carbono exigen reducir progresivamente hasta eliminar el 100% la emisión de carbono, opuesto a lo requerido para seguir operando con métodos convencionales. Estos dos factores afectan la sustentabilidad en el largo plazo en todas las empresas mineras maduras como en el futuro de Antamina.

Over 330 million accidents at work happen world wide every year, only counting those leading to more than four days absence. More than 350,000 end fatal. Two million people more die every year due to work-related diseases. To sum this up: around 2.4 million people die every year because of work conditions. Among many risky industries, mining stands out. While mining represents just 1% of employees globally, it unfortunately represents 8% of all occupational fatalities. Mining operations go along with a variety of hazards. Not only in large operations, as they first come to mind, but also in the manifold small scale mines, with an estimated 13 million labourers worldwide exposed to substances such as dust, mercury and other chemicals, while also dealing with poor ventilation, inadequate space and overexertion. But is the number of severe accidents and diseases inevitable or can we change this situation? We can make mining sustainably safer, but we need a successful strategy to do so. A high potential lies in Vision Zero. Vision Zero is a prevention strategy for a safe future without fatal or serious occupational diseases, work accidents and traffic accidents. First defined as early as in the 19th century by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, its very successful elements were adopted by many European countries first aiming at road safety, then extended to safety and health at work. Vision Zero?s holistic elements cover technology, workplaces, rules, and people as fields of action. By focussing on severe and fatal accidents, its application increases the level of safety and health overall.

This report summarizes the results of metallurgical investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of manganese oxide ore, averaging 23 to 25 percent manganese, stockpiled at the Butte-Philipsburg depot of General Services Administration (GSA). The oxide ores were stockpiled in two general classifications, straight oxide ore and mixed oxide-carbonate ore. Continuous-circuit flotation tests at the Albany (Oreg.) Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines showed that each of these ore types could be concentrated by an oil-emulsion scheme to produce a concentrate that could be sintered to meet program specifications. About 88 percent of the manganese was recovered in the concentrate from the straight oxide sample, with the sintered concentrate containing 48 percent Mn. The sintered concentrate from the mixed oxide-carbonate sample contained 41 percent Mn with a recovery in the concentrate of 95 percent.

"In port and harbor facilities, jetties and cargo berth terminals are usually installed on piles that remain partially embedded in soil, while a part of it behaves as columns supporting top deck. Technology in vogue adapts a pseudo static analysis in computer where the top deck including piles are analyzed as an integrated system based on finite element method when the piles are modeled as beam elements, while the soil in which it is embedded is modeled as linear or nonlinear springs. Typical berthing force of the ship is considered as a pseudo static force where the dynamic characteristics of the force is taken into consideration by an equivalent impact factor and little study exists on the actual behavior of these type of piles under the transient shock due to berthing impact. Present paper proposes an analytical solution based on which one can compute the dynamic response of such jetty piles considering shear modulus of soil constant with depth. Considering the solution is analytical in nature no special software is needed and can well be adapted fordesign office practice using generic utility software like MATHCAD, MATLAB etc. that makes theproposed model computationally very efficient.INTRODUCTIONResponse of piles under dynamic load has been an important study in the realms of civil engineering, where significant research has been carried out on its dynamic behavior under harmonic loads like one experienced in a machine foundation or under seismic force.A number of researchers have given solution to this problem like Parmelee et al (1964), Tajimi (1966), Penzien (1970), Novak et al (1974, 1983), Banerjee and Sen (1987), Dobry and Gazetas (1988),Chowdhury and Dasgupta (2008).However, most of these theories are based on piles loaded under harmonic load and valid for long piles where structural failure precedes the soil failure considering the piles are long and flexible."

Construction and mining worksites pose unique challenges to workers and equipment operators due to their dynamic and unstructured nature. Narrow haul roads, crowded work spaces and presence of workers and equipment in close proximity, combined with large blind spots and overall poor visibility afforded to operators lead to collisions and run-over-type accidents between equipment, workers, and other entities that may be present on the jobsite. Operations that involve machine-infrastructure interaction, particularly in the case of concealed infrastructure such as excavation and drilling lead to unintended strikes between the equipment?s end-effect or and the infrastructure. Such accident-prone scenarios can be avoided by providing operators with real-time feedback and warnings using 3D visualization and proximity monitoring of the entities present in the equipment?s vicinity. Thus the jobsite in the real world is abstracted and represented in a 3D virtual world. However, this requires the ability to create a seamless link between real-world sensors present on the equipment and/or the jobsite and the virtual environment. This paper describes a non-restrictive acquisition allocation framework that allows position and orientation sensor streams from construction and mining job sites to be used for updating 3D virtual scenes in real-time for providing vital collision avoidance warnings to equipment operators.

The first step in determining whether Mn can be recovered by in situ leaching is to develop and test a selective lixiviant. Two column leach tests and one core leach test Were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on Mn oxide ore using aqueous sulfur dioxide (SO2) as the lixiviant. The column tests showed that aqueous S02 could selectively dissolve available Mn oxides from calcite-rich ore in a heap leach system. However, the core test showed that calcite gangue side reactions can have pronounced negative effects on the likelihood of successful in situ leaching of a calcite-rich ore with aqueous S02. Petrographic and geochemical analyses showed that both Mn (IV, III) oxides and calcite were dissolved. The abundance of dissolved Ca caused precipitation of gypsum. Acid consumption by calcite dissolution caused a rise in pH that caused the SO/S species to shift to S032-(sulfIte), which hindered reductive dissolution of Mn oxide. Gypsum precipitation did not affect complete leaching of the rock fragments in the column tests; however, it plugged the natural permeability in the core. Manganese recoveries were high for the column tests and low for the core test.

Southwestern New Mexico is part of a large belt of Late Cretaceous to Eocene copper porphyry deposits found in Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. These deposits are the result of arc magmatism that occurred during the Laramide orogeny. Recently, attention has been brought to other commodities that can be extracted as by- and co-products, many of which are critical minerals. A new compilation of the geochronology of these deposits shows two main pulses of magmatism that produced mineralized deposits and, along with new dates by the author, shines new light on the geologic history of these deposits and the role it plays in critical mineral abundance.

[The Bureau of Mines is conducting an extensive investigation of coal preparation in the Alabama coal fields in cooperation with the University of Alabama and coal-mine operators. In this investigation the drainage characteristics of typical coals from the Warrior and Cahaba n fields were studied. Tire main purposes of this study has been to evaluate no nearly as possible relative influences of certain factors on rate of drainage and to determine whether the drainage characteristics of coals from different beds or from different mines on the soma bed differ materially. A further objective was the development of a laboratory drainage test that would predict approximately the rate at which any coal will drain after having been loaded into a railroad car in a saturated condition. The study has been confined to samples of slack coals - that is, coals from which none of the fine sizes have been removed. The samples ranged in upper size limits from 7/16 inch to 3 inches. It did not seem necessary to study nut and egg sizes, that is, sizes from which the fine coal has been removed by screening, as these lose water so rapidly by natural drainage that they present no serious problem in dewatering after treatment in a washer. The significance of drainage characteristics of Alabama coals is apparent in view of the fact that not less than 70 percent of Alabama?s total coal product is subjected to wet washing before being materials.]

The Konongo Gold Project is located on the western margin of the 125 Moz Ashanti Gold Belt in Ghana, West Africa. It is situated 60 km along strike of the world-class mineral system at Obuasi and is interpreted to lie on the same controlling regional shear system.The project is operated by Signature Metals, a subsidiary of the Liongold Corporation, and is managed and funded by the Liongold Corporation.Historic underground operations at Konongo produced 1.6 Moz Au at a head grade of 11.8 g/t Au, from eight operations spread along 16 km of the shear system. Mining focused almost exclusively on free-milling gold in quartz, ignoring the gold-bearing sulfide mineralisation associated with the quartz veins. Underground mining ceased in 1986.In 2013, Signature Metals re-focused the program at Konongo to assess the viability of mining the sulfide ore sustainably. This led to the first campaign review of the historic underground data and resource potential since mine closure. The Obenemase mine was the first of the eight operations to be assessed as part of this campaign.Large amounts of legacy data have survived for Obenemase and several historic resource estimations have been completed based on these data. The data typically consisted of hand-drawn sections and plans, and ledgers of commonly incomplete drilling and sampling data. Some drill core have been lost over time, but a large amount of quarter-core and half-core as well as pulps and rejects are still available. Previous resource estimates had a low confidence value because all the available assay and geological data were integrated effectively with the estimates, resulting in a lack of understanding of both grade and geological continuity.This project built a new geological model for Obenemase that greatly enhances the understanding of the controls on mineralisation using a thorough approach of re-surveying, re-cataloguing and re-logging. This model led to an increased degree of confidence and a subsequent upgrade of resource classification, and created several previously unrecognised strong exploration targets. The resulting resource estimates increased the value of the project by 100 per cent.This paper emphasises and highlights the importance of a well-understood geological model on the confidence of a resource estimate and how this may directly impact on the project’s ‘bottom line’.CITATION:Sterk, R and Reid, B, 2014. One of the most challenging aspects in semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying (SMIPCC) system design is determining the optimum depth at which to change from a purely truck-based haulage system to a conveyor-based haulage system. We used scenario analysis to determine the optimum transition depth between a truck and shovel (TS) system and a SMIPCC system. Traditional pit-limit algorithms were used to generate the final pit limit on a copper deposit, which was then divided into four pushbacks. The final operating pushbacks (phases) were designed for both TS and SMIPCC. The end depths for each phase are viewed as candidate transition points to switch from the TS to SMIPCC haulage system. Economic calculations were applied for five different scenarios, including adopting SMIPCC from the outset (pure SMIPCC), after the first, second, and third phases, and finally not using the SMIPCC system (pure TS) at all. The analysis indicates that the second scenario, at a depth of 335 m, results in the lowest cumulative discounted cost (CDC). In this case, the CDC is 17.6% lower than that for the pure TS scenario and 10.7% lower than for the pure SMIPCC system scenario.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can cause serious and irreparable negative health effects, including silicosis and lung cancer. Workers in coal mines have the potential of being exposed to RCS found in dust generated by various mining processes. The silica content of respirable dust in one single mine can vary substantially over both time and location. The current monitoring approach for RCS relies on the use of traditional air sampling followed by laboratory analysis. Results generated using this approach are generally not available for several days to several weeks after sampling, and this delay prevents timely and effective intervention if needed. An alternate analytical method is needed to reduce the time required to quantify the RCS exposure of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new method using commercially available portable infrared spectrometers for measuring RCS at the end of the sampling shift. This paper will describe the application of the new field-based RCS analytical process for coal mines, including the use of the new method with the existing Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampler Unit. In a case study conducted by NIOSH with a coal mine operator in West Virginia, field-based RCS analysis was completed at a mine site to evaluate the new technique. The RCS analysis results obtained by the field-based method in this case study showed sufficiently strong correlation with results obtained by the MSHA standard laboratory analysis method to allow the mine operator to use the field-based method for evaluating process improvements.

As part of its mission, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continues to develop technologies that will enable cost-effective compliance with environmental requirements. To this end, investigations to improve the kinetics of chalcopyrite dissolution by simultaneous grinding-leaching in ferric sulfate solution were conducted using the Bureau-designed turbo mill. The development of such a hydrometallurgical process would provide a nonpolluting alternative to conventional smelter technology. The effects of mill rotational speed and volume percent solids on the leaching time and energy required for copper extraction from chalcopyrite were evaluated. The results of this laboratory study have shown that the simultaneous grinding-leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate using the turbomill is technically feasible with essentially 100 pet extraction of copper being possible at 90° C. An optimal energy consumption of 1,153 kW?h/st of copper leached was found in batch testing with the mill operating at 400 rpm with a slurry containing 35 vol pet chalcopyrite. This energy consumption, while higher than other proposed leaching processes (about 600 kW?h/st), is of the same order of magnitude. Further refinement of the energy requirements would require additional testing using a continuous circuit. Leaching times of less than 1 h, for 80 pct copper extraction, are achievable using the turbomill grind-leach process.

The importance of the pressing operation in the forming of articles by powder metallurgy depends to a great extent on the type of product to be made. While in some few cases the pressing is merely a means of compacting loose powder particles into a solid mass preliminary to a sintering treatment, in most applications it constitutes a molding operation with the purpose of shaping the raw material in powder form into a certain predetermined, accurately defined part not altered in shape by subsequent sintering. In still other cases, no pressing at all but sintering in molds gives useful articles. A limited number of products are made by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat. The factors that control the product of the pressing operation are raw material, lubricant, type, size and shape of die and compact, magnitude and time of application of pressure, as well as temperature of pressing. All such factors need to be controlled; yet, depending on the function of the pressing operation, greater emphasis may be placed on processing factors other than the pressing operation. In any complete discussion of pressing, subsequent sintering cannot be disregarded. For the sake of brevity, the present paper has been limited to the mechanics of pressing and only occasionally refers to sintering. For the same reason, hot-pressing has been omitted as beyond the scope of this paper In any survey of the literature on the pressing of metal powders, the 1938 paper of Balshinl on the theory of the process of pressing deserves mention. The first attempts at an interpretation of pressing phenomena were made by Balshin' and RakovskL2 The experimental results of both are of great interest. Since the experimental results are not described, the work was repeated, using our own interpretation of the possible techniques, and is reported in the following pages. The basic theory of Balshin,' based on a hydro-dynamic analogy, however, leads to hut another way of plotting density and pres- , sure against height of a pressed compact. Since it does not give any new insight into the phenomena, nor account for the influence of side-wall friction, a discussion of the theory has been omitted from this paper. Density Gradients in Compacts The process of pressing metal powders in a die (disregarding for this consideration the powder filling and ejection operations) may be divided into three phases: (I) packing, (2) elastic and plastic deformation, (3) cold-working with or without fragmentation.
