Rossland is in the West Kootenay district; 5 miles north of the International boundary and 4 miles west of Columbia River at Trail. The first claim in the district was located in 1887; but there was little activity until 1890; when the showings that later became important were staked and development began. Production increased rapidly from 1; 800 tons in 1894 to a peak of 360; 000 tons in 1903; and averaged 286; 000 tons for the next 13 years. It declined sharply in 1917; and continued to decline until the closing of the main mines in 1928. Between 1933 and 1941 leasers mined a further 137; 000 tons. Total output has been about 6; 200; 000 tons; with average recovery of 0.47 oz. gold; 0.6 oz. silver; and 1 per cent copper. The total value was $82; 500; 000; of which aboµt three-quarters was in gold; the camp still leads the province in total gold produced. Ninety-eight per cent of the tonnage came from a small compact area worked by four inter-connected mines : the Le Roi (39 per cent); Centre Star (25 per cent); War Eagle (24 per cent); and Josie (10 per cent); all now owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smdting Company of Canada; Limited.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

Rare earth element (REE) data are reported for ores, sul?de-bearing rocks and host rocks from massive sul?de deposits and barren sul?de facies iron formations in Proterozoic volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon-Snow Lake area, Manitoba. Some of the rare earth elements (e.g., Eu), are selectively leached in zones of intense alteration and redeposited together with the sul?des and silicatesin the uppermost parts of the alteration zones and at the rock-water interface. Chondrite normalized REE pro?les of layered sul?de ores and exhalites proximal to the deposits typically have positive europium anomalies and are enriched in light REE. In contrast, barren sul?de facies iron formations exhibit negative or ‘normal’ Eu pro?les. REE data are useful to explorationists in determining the presence of ‘off-hole’ metal-bearing sul?de zones, in distinguishing metal-poor sul?dic layers related to ‘economic’ hydrothermal activity from barren sul?de facies iron formation and in some instances as a means of establishing ‘ore-equivalent’ strata.

The last time Mining Engineering presented an issue with a special focus on Canadian Mining (ME, August 2008 pp. 28 to 40) things were going well. A feature story took a look at Xstrata?s Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury and the booming Canadian oil sands were discussed at length. Potash prices were soaring, large diamonds were being found and British Columbia was launching plans to find more workers. How things have changed in six short months. What began as a mortgage crisis grew into a credit crisis, then mutated into a financial crisis, that has taken its toll on the value of bonds, loans, stocks, real estate and commodities. Miners that were flying high on unprecedented commodity prices six months ago have begun scaling back with delays, shut downs and layoffs as they struggle to survive this most recent economic downturn.

WITH the expiration on April 30, 1941, of the agreement between the anthracite operators and the United Mine Workers of America, a new agreement was entered into, providing for a general wage increase of 7 1/2 per cent effective May 1, to be brought to a total of 10 per cent on Oct. 1. Contract rates were increased from the rates established under the agreement of September 1923, and hourly rates were raised above the agreement of May 1936 as modified from the eight-to seven-hour day in May 1937. The new rates are to be in force for the duration of the agreement, ending April 30, 1943.

Abstract Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, nine miles east of the town of Val d'Or in northwestern Quebec, are presently milling, at the rate of 1,000 tons daily, a relatively complex 3.11-phide ore and producing, in decreasing order of value, zinc, silver, gold, lead, and copper. The products are a zinc concentrate, a silver-lead-copper concentrate, and a silver-gold precipitate from cyanidation. Although several independent pre-production metallurgical investigations into the treatment of the ore were carried out, current practice is different from any of the recommended methods and, while still leaving room for improvement, is considerably more effective than earlier performance. Flow-sheet developments from the commencement of operations in 1942 are dealt with briefly, showing the reasons for making numerous changes, the shortcomings of the various schemes tried, and, finally, covering data pertinent to present-day practice. From the recovery standpoint, silver has presented the greatest difficulty. The writer's association with the Company coincided with the start of production. Characteristics of the Ore The predominant metallic minerals present in the ore, in decreasing order of their abundance, are: pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite, with lesser amounts of argentiferous tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, covellite, bornite, and chalcocite. The sphalerite is mostly light in colour, sometimes colourless, and practically free from combined iron. Some of the sphalerite is very closely associated with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Pyrie is abundantly disseminated as medium to fine grains; more rarely it is massive and contains occasional grains of sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite.

This report describes exploration for lead-zinc ores at the Madonna mine between 1945 and 1953 by the Utze Lode Co., the Bureau of Mines, and the company with Government financial aid under the Defense Production Act of 1950. The Madonna mine yielded silver, lead, and zinc with a net smelter value of over $5,000.000. from 1882 to 1924. The mine was inactive from 1924 to 1942 when the Utze Lode Co. acquired the property. Possibilities for finding ore in the mine, especially at depth, were considered favorable. The Utze Lode Co. began rehabilitating the Madonna mine in 1945. The report describes three experiments that were conducted to determine the effects of size and weight of the miner's battery pack on performance in the low seam coal environment. Three separate experiments were carried out in a simulated low seam coal mine. The first experiment tested the sensitivity of task measures (i.e., subjects performed locomotion) shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks) to detect variations in the size and weight of the battery pack. The results of the first experiment demonstrated that only the locomotion tasks were sensitive to size and weight variations. The second experiment, therefore, focused on the locomotion tasks and tested the effects of varying size and weight on task completion time. The third experiment was designed to compare the present battery pack to a radically different configuration of power cells. The most important findings were that changes in weight affected locomotion times but changes in size and configuration had small and inconsistent effects. Opinion data of subjects indicated a strong preference for a battery nark belt concept.

Judging from the rapid pace of increased demands for mineral products, technological forecasting will become an increasingly necessary tool in mining. Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more are than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. If metal and mineral commodities continue to hold their respective and present share of markets, the prospect of coping with demands from a population that will double in the next thirty years can become an impossible task when viewed outside the limits of technological advance and change. Those mining companies that are doing little to develop new and expanding horizons for their operations cannot expect to survive. Nearly 90% of all metals and mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which, consequently, has resulted in some spectacular developments. Already production rates at many places are dwarfing those of the Panama Canal and other well-known earth moving projects which are frequently identified as massive undertakings. With projects of this scale, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process.

GTRC has just produced a new problem-solving manual that provides a comprehensive source of hands-on solutions for the many Galfan licensees throughout the world, and should contribute substantially to the reputation of Galfan as a consistently top-quality steel-coating product. Meanwhile, NAGDA is advancing the market with new advertising for Galfan based on superior corrosion-resistant qualities proven through ILZRO-sponsored research. Practical manufacturing issues remain at the forefront of ILZRO priorities, with research emphasis on cutting and welding zinc-coated steel to provide direct assistance towards improved product quality and a more secure market. Moving to the arena of die casting, when the specifier looks to zinc to fill a design need, ILZRO-sponsored research projects provide comprehensive documentation on metallurgical characteristics for every zinc alloy under almost any imaginable application. On-going ILZRO-sponsored research is integrating this wealth of data with sophisticated computer programs that model die-casting designs with ever-increasing accuracy, as other ILZRO projects lay the market groundwork for zinc in applications ranging from vibration damping to electromagnetic shielding.

Aspects of the production of platinum group metals by reductive smelting in direct-current arc furnace processes are investigated using a computational modelling approach. The replacement of fossil carbon as a reductant by alternative reductants such as silicon carbide, ferrosilicon, and hydrogen is desirable for reducing direct greenhouse gas emissions from such processes, but the impact of these changes on the electrical operability of the process is poorly understood. This paper presents a study of plasma arc behaviour in the context of the ConRoast® reductive smelting process for Upper Group 2 ore as well as processes for recycling of automotive catalysts, using an integrated computational modelling workflow. It was found that the freeboard gas compositions, plasma properties, and arc behaviour were all affected by the choice of reductant, particularly in carbon-free smelting using ferrosilicon or hydrogen.

Numerous populations of assays have been simulated for a range of assay values representative of low-grade mineral deposits to facilitate the study of problems encountered in evaluating these deposits. Analysis of these simulated populations of assays (obtained by using statistical probability models for the simulation) makes possible the quantification of the effects of (1) various composite assay intervals, (2) ore reserve computational methods, (3) uneven assay intervals, and (4) various cutoff grades on both the precision and the accuracy of the estimated average grade and tonnage of ore.

The preferred orientation developed in extruded aluminum rods has been studied as a function of extrusion temperature, extrusion speed, and position in the rod. Duplex <111> - <001> textures were developed for slow extrusion speeds at temperatures of 75° to 850° F and for fast extrusion speeds at temperatures of 75° to 450°F. The <001> texture component was shown to be primarily due to re crystallization occurring during fabrication. At fast speeds and billet temperatures of 650° to 850°F, complete recrystallization occurred and <115>or<118> textures were found. The nature of the structure has proved to be an important variable in the production and use of extruded products. Data on the flow of aluminum and aluminum alloys summarized by Smith,&apos; Hardy,&apos; and Locke3 show that the extruded product may possess a deformed, a partially recrystallized, or a completely recrystallized structure, and there may be important variations in the structure from surface to center and from front end to back end of an extrusion. This inhomogeneity in grain structure and preferred orientation affects both the mechanical properties of the extruded section and its response to subsequent heat treatment. Among the fabrication variables causing these differences are temperature, extrusion ratio, and extrusion speed. Preferred orientation which develops during the extrusion of rods is of the fiber-type and, in general, has been assumed to be similar to that developed in rods or wires fabricated by drawing through dies, rolling, or swaging.4 Because of the nature of the flow of metal being extruded, this assumption may be valid for material near the center of the rod but probably is not valid for the outer layers. In most face-centered-cubic metals a duplex fiber texture has commonly been reported in which the grains have either <Ill> or <001> directions parallel to the longitudinal axis. Sachs and fichiebold5 reported cold-drawn aluminum (99.6 pct pure) to have a single <Ill> fiber texture, and this observation was confirmed by Schmid and Wassermann.6 Hibbard, on the other hand, observed a minor <001> and a major <111> texture in 99.994 pct A1 cold drawn to 98 pct reduction in diam.7 He concluded that the <001> component resulted from a small amount of room-temperature recrystallization. Dayal8 concluded that the <001> component was an intermediate component which disappeared at high reductions in 99.5 pct pure Al. Kostron and schippers9 found duplex <111> — <001> textures in extruded 99.5 pct Al, as did Gow and cahnl0 and GOW11 for extruded rods of commercial and superpure aluminum. Similar duplex fiber textures have been reported for aluminum alloys by Kostron,= Unckel,13 and Van Horn.14 The present paper is concerned with the variation in texture with fabricating conditions and with the nature of the texture components in extruded aluminum rod (99.99 pct pure). EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ingots were chill-cast in cast-iron molds and machined to 3-in. diam by 6-in. long extrusion billets. There has been little change in timbering methods in anthracite mines for 75 years, and technical information on strata control is almost wholly lacking. In order to assist the industry to establish technical data, the Bureau of Mines and a Northern field operator are cooperating in underground experiments, the first phase of which has been to investigate pneumatic packing. The four principal methods of packing in mining are hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and hand. The hydraulic pa caring system is believed to have originated at Shenanodah, Pa., in 1864,4/ to prevent destruction of a church by surface subsidence after underground coal mining. This method was used again in 1884 to arrest an underground fire at Buck Ridge colliery, near Shamokin, Pa. In 1901 hydraulic packing was introduced to Europe in Upper Silesia, where it gained in popularity owing to the availability of large quantities of sand suitable for flushing .5/ Hydraulic packing has a number of disadvantages. Chief among these are the softening effect of large quantities of water on the mine floor conducive to heaving action; drainage and punning costs; and the inability to fill roof cavities completely in flat beds.
