"Copper-bearing gold ores have proved difficult to treat in conventional cyanide leaching process owing to prohibitively high consumption of cyanide by readily soluble copper minerals interfering with gold extraction. Cyanide leaching of gold from copper-rich ores can be improved by intensive cyanidation or application of physical and chemical pre-treatment methods (e.g., ultra-fine grinding, roasting and leaching). In this study, nitric acid leaching of a copper-bearing pyritic concentrate (0.3% Cu, 62 g/t Au and 110 g/t Ag) as pre-treatment prior to cyanidation was investigated. The mineralogical analysis of the concentrate has revealed that it is composed of mainly quartz (25%), pyrite (32.7%), sphalerite (5.37 %), galena (2.12 wt %) and anglesite (1.13 %). Arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite were also detected as minor phases present. Previous studies carried out by the authors showed that direct cyanidation (1.5 g/L NaCN) of the as-received concentrate (d80: 80 µm) produced low gold (45% Au) and silver (46% Ag) extractions. Nitric acid pretreatment of the as-received concentrate was performed for 5 hours at 1-5 M HNO3 and 80oC. In these tests, 65% Cu/Pb and 94% Zn were leached. The nitric acid pre-treatment improved the extraction of gold and silver in subsequent cyanide leaching (1.5 g/L NaCN) to 82% Au and 87.5% Ag with a concomitant decrease (up to 54%) in cyanide consumption. It can be inferred from these findings that the removal of copper from the concentrate and the liberation of the occluded gold by nitric acid leaching as pretreatments can be appropriately employed for the treatment of the copper-bearing pyritic concentrate with high gold/silver content. INTRODUCTION Refractory ores are often characterized by their low amenability to cyanide leaching resulting low (often <80%) Au/Ag extractions (Bhappu, 1990; Celep et al., 2009; Marsden and House, 2006). One of the most common causes of refractoriness is the physical or chemical encapsulation of submicroscopic or fine-grained gold in sulphide minerals such as arsenopyrite and pyrite (La Brooy et al., 1994; Vaughan, 2004). To render refractory gold ores/concentrates amenable to cyanide leaching, the decomposition of sulphide minerals within a pre-treatment process to expose the encapsulated gold grains to the action of cyanide is required. In this regard, roasting, pressure oxidation and biooxidation are commercially used processes for pretreatment of arsenopyrite/pyrite gold ores/concentrates ahead of cyanide leaching (La Brooy et al., 1994). Presence of cyanide-soluble copper minerals in the ore leads to low gold recoveries and high cyanide consumptions under conventional cyanide leaching conditions. High cyanide concentrations (CN:Cu>4) should be employed to achieve high gold recoveries from copper-rich gold ores/concentrates. This may require recovery of cyanide from effluents. In this regard, SART Process (sulphidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening) employed industrially for recovery of cyanide and copper as a by-product. This process simply relies on the addition of sulphide (as Na2S, NaSH or H2S) to the leach solution prior to the acidification to pH 4-5. This results in the precipitation of copper as Cu2S and occurrence of free cyanide which is recycled to the leaching circuit after S/L separation (Dai et al., 2012)."

As a by-product of the steelmaking industry rich in iron and zinc, electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) landfill disposal is restricted in many countries due to the metal lixiviation risks. Several approaches have been examined to recycle or reuse EAFD. Hydrometallurgical methods mainly include the preparation of pregnant acid leached solution (PLS) using inorganic acids followed by selective metal recovery using different methods. We herein proposed a hydrometallurgical process initiated by acid leaching and finalized by thermal treatment to produce nano-ZnO from EAFD. At the condition of this study, only 67% of zinc was leached by sulfuric acid from EAFD into PLS while 98% of surplus leached iron was removed through precipitation by sodium hydroxide. Additional purification of iron removed PLS was accomplished using di-2 ethylhexyl phosphoric acid to extract Zn+2. The addition of ammonium hydroxide to purified PLS provided (Zn(OH)2)3(ZnSO4)(H2O)5 as the final precursor for nano-ZnO that ultimately transformed to nano-ZnO (60 ± 6 nm particle size) at 850 °C. The achieved results were scrutinized through various tests and analyses including TEM, XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA.

The chromite deposits along the Stillwater complex in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., have at various times been studied and reported on by the Federal Geological Survey, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, other Government agencies, and private interests, Several of the deposits were explored to a mall extent by the owners during the World War of 1914-17, but no production resulted. The importance of these deposits and the urgent necessity of developing large domestic sources of chromite were realized shortly before the beginning of the recent World War. These deposits were therefore investigated and developed by Government agencies and., as a result, now afford the largest known reserves of chromium in the United States. In 1939, under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey made preliminary investigations of these deposits. As a result, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive program of trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling. This work was begun in August 1939 and continued to April 1943. The Bureau of Mines also performed numerous metallurgical tests on the beneficiation of the chromite ores and concentrates and for the production of chromium metal there from. Research continues as a means toward utilizing these ores.

In preparing the Steep Rock Lake iron ore body for mining, it was necessary to drain Steep Rock Lake. Using diamond drills, a cut 1800 ft long, 100 ft wide, and maximum depth of 95 ft amounting to 300,000 cu yd of material, was excavated in Greenstone to provide a drainage channel. This was done under the general contractor C. A. Pitts, of Toronto, who in turn employed a diamond drill contractor, Boyles Bros., to do the drilling. The method of excavation was selected be- cause a clean square cut and grade could be maintained in the bottom of the channel. Bootlegged holes would have left blocks of rock in the corners which would have created a situation which would have become progressively worse as the open cut advanced from one side of the ridge to the other.

In 1960, the Kennecott Copper Corp. and the U.S. Bureau of Mines entered into a joint research program to determine the changes in stress, strain, and displacement created by changes in slope angles. The field site was the Kimbley Pit, located near Ely, Nevada; the supporting laboratory investigations were made at the Bureau&apos;s Denver Mining Research Center. Following a study to determine the rock stresses in the mining district, the strike and dip of geologic defects (fractures) in the rock, and the laboratory-determined strength of the rock, a new slope angle and pit configuration was selected, and instruments were installed to measure changes in stress, strain, displacement, microseismic noise rate, and sonic velocities at several points in the west wall of the pit. Between February and November 1966, the west slope was changed from an average angle of 45° to a new slope angle that started at 45° on the south wall, gradually increased to 57 ½ at the center of the west wall, and to 61° on the north wall. The pit was deepened from about 500 feet to about 550 feet. About 2.55 million tons of waste and ore were removed by stripping and mining.

This paper will describe design of precast segmental tunnel lining for the Pawtucket CSO Tunnel Project in Providence, Rhode Island. The tunnel is 11,700 LF long with 30-foot finished diameter to be constructed in complex sedimentary rocks. Special features of the segments include a large keystone and no connector used on radial joints. The typical segments will be steel fiber reinforced, and hybrid segments with additional steel rebars and shear bicones will be used around the adit openings without use of any structural framing. The important design considerations will be discussed, including special 3D segment to adit connection analyses performed.

At the beginning of the 20 century, British Columbia produced a wide variety of quality dimension stone products for both domestic and foreign markets. The industry flourished until the 1930s when most of the producing quarries closed as a result of the Depression. During the 1990s, British Columbia experienced the resurgent North American dimensional stone production trend. The industry benefited from increased prospecting activity and from substantial new investment in processing equipment, particularly in the granite sector. These activities resulted in new quarry developments, the reopening of abandoned quarries such as on Granite and Fox Islands <www.quadrastone.com>, and a renaissance in downstream value-added activities. British Columbia has reestablished itself as an important, reliable and innovative source of high-quality stone products.

The effective utilization of the energy in comminution devices depend on how efficiently the broken particles leave the breakage field as soon as they reach product size. In crushers the transport of broken particles smaller than CSS is done by gravity (vertical) thus allowing the energy to be applied to new particles. However, in AG/SAG mills, gravity becomes the energy field and the transport of particles is horizontal which needs a suitable discharge mechanism and has been found to have significant effect on grinding efficiency. The material transport in AG/SAG mills depend on how efficiently the discharge system (grate and pulp lifters) operates. Material transport plays a significant role on efficiency of horizontal grinding mills ? AG/SAG/Ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a Greenfield milling operation at Mirabela Mineração?s SantaRita Nickel operation located in northeastern part of Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, which was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 mtpa (575tph) to produce a P80 of 125um with 10-12% ball charge in SAG mill. However, it has been operating as ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity has been achieved in few days and has gradually increased to an average of +800 tph and still it is operating in ABC mode. The milling circuit commissioning resulted in small and relatively simple measures to rectify, which was reflected in the rapid commissioning of the milling circuit and it achieved the nameplate capacity within days. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30?x 15.4? 8.5MW SAG Mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPL TM ) in close circuit with HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20? x 28.4? 5.5MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 x 26? CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimization, and future development works. The Functions and the Responsibilities of the Institute The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is unique. ln addition to the welfare of its members, it has a real interest in the welfare and promotion of one of Canada&apos;s largest and most important basic industries. It is because of this that the membership is composed of both individual and corporate members. The individual members are both technical and non-technical (Members and Associates). Both Members and Associates have the same status in the Institute and all are interested in the welfare of the mineral industry. The aims and objects of the Institute 11re twofold. The education and welfare of its individual members and the sound promotion and welfare of the mineral industry. Perhaps it might be well if we reviewed these aims and objects as stated in our Constitution: "First - To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of valuable minerals and metals, by means of meetings for the reading and discu11ion of technical papers, and the subsequent distribution of such information as may be gained throo.gh the medium of publications". It cannot be denied that we have do ne a good job in this particular phase of our work. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement. It has been suggested that we might have more discussion and, on occasions, more criticism of our papers and programmes. This can best be done if the authors will have their papers prepared in sufficient time to permit of preprints being made availa1ble before the meeting at which they are to be presented.

A revised and expanded edition of a previous paper** dealing with reactions of calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides with pulverized coal fly ash is presented. Lime-fly ash specimens were cured at constant temperature and subjected to X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, pozzolanic reactivity tests, and microscopical investigations. Bars of limefly ash were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying, and measurements of length change were recorded. A discussion of variations within and among types of lime and types of fly ash is presented. The nature of the pozzolanic reaction is reviewed, particularly as related to compounds which are used up and formed during the aging process. The relationship between the pozzolanic reaction and the resultant physical properties of the mixtures is examined.

Laminated rock can delaminate and fail under certain stress states. Delamination-caused roof fall and cutter roof failure is a common failure mechanism in roadways in Pittsburgh coal seam due to the existence of laminated shale roof. Two-dimensional numerical models were developed at laboratory scale based on the bonded particle method in order to simulate the delamination with particle flow code. In these models, an assembly of bonded particles and parallel weak planes represents the laminated rock. This model calibrated the micro-parameters of the bonded particlematerial and weak planes with laboratory data. The mechanism of fracturing and delamination in a laminated specimen was investigated using unconfined and confined compression test and unsupported roof compression test. The numerical results show that, under a constant horizontal stress, delamination occurswhen the stress is much lower than its compressive strength. The confined compressive test indicates that delamination is restrained by applying confining stress since delamination-caused failure does not occur during any stage of the confined compressive test. Unsupported roof compression tests showed propagation of cutter roof failure with initiation of cracks and delamination at the intersections of the roof and ribs. An outer failed zone and inner failed zone form separately. The separated zones connect and form an opening in the roof. The presented numerical results provide additional insight into process of delamination.

A family of personal computer programs that calculate the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The CMRR rock mass classification system provides a link between the qualitative geologists&apos; description of coal mine roof and the quantitive mine engineers&apos; needs for mine design roof support selection, and hazard detection. The program CMRR is a user-friendly, interactive program into which raw field data are input. A CMRR is calculated and output along with two graphic displays. The first graphic display is a plan view trap with the CMRR&apos;s displayed on a color-coded scale. The second display shows a stratigraphic section of the bolted roof interval and its resultant CMRR. In addition, a Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet, computer file BOM-CMRR.WK3, has been developed for easy storage of field data. The worksheet includes four macros that automatically calculate CMRR&apos;s, store field test data in a database format, and print a two-page report of the field data and CMRR parameters. Production of summary port; for analysis of site-specific information are readily generated using Lotus 1-2-3 software. These programs help to facilitate the engineer in utilizing the CMRR in ground control studies.

The production of lead-acid batteries is defined by a closed-loop product life-cycle. Active material and grid alloys converge on an adaptable specification that improves both performance and recyclability. This mapping of product requirements for lead-acid batteries has taken over 80 years to develop. But, as the use of batteries made with other chemistries continues to grow, the need for a comparable life-cycle management process becomes increasingly apparent given societal needs to manage raw materials, e.g. the European Union Battery Directive recycling targets. What has taken more than 80 years for lead-acid to evolve in a closed-loop paradigm must now be accomplished in less time for batteries using other chemistries and technologies. End-of-life costs are embedded in the product cost of lead-acid batteries. However, end-of-life costs are not reflected in the product cost of batteries made with other chemistries. Those costs are borne by other constituencies with often inefficient and environmentally damaging results. Lead-acid is a materials technology management model for other products.

The patent issued to Sulman, Pickard, and Ballot, November 6, 1905, and assigned to Minerals Separation and Minerals Separation American Syndicate, for new and useful improvements in ore concen- tration, its object being to separate metalliferous matter from gangue by means of oils and fatty acids that have a preferential affinity for such metalliferous matter, the principal feature of which is "agitat- ing the mixture to cause the oil-coated mineral to form a froth," was clearly anticipated by other patents, and each step in the process described in the Sulman, Pickard, and Ballot patent is fully described in more than one of the prior patents, with the single exception of the reduced quantity of oil used; but the discovery that the small fraction of oil is sufficient to produce flotation of the metalliferous matter can not be made by itself or in combination, the subject of a patent. An adequate knowledge of the overall behavior of a rock mass at a given site is fundamental to the satisfactory design of a rock slope. The be- havior is controlled by a variety of factors, in- cluding rock type, geological structure, stress and ground water conditions. There are essentially three lines of approach that may be used to obtain information on the in-situ rock mass behavior for the purpose of the design of a rock slope: (1) Direct measurements of rock mass properties by means ol laboratory and field tests. (2) Evaluation of rock mass properties from a study of slope failure case histories and sta- tistical information on stable and unstable natural rock slopes. (3) Evaluation of in-situ behavior of rock mass by using a physical or mathematical model technique.

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. Introduction The property of Normetal Mining Corporation is in Desmeloizes township, Quebec, twelve miles north of Dupuy on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Quebec city co Cochrane, Ontario. The ore bodies occur within a band of highly sheared and sericitized agglomerate which strikes N.60°W. and clips 82° north. Along a zone 1,000 feet or more in length and of variable width, the agglomerate has been replaced by copper, zinc, and iron sulphides, with copper usually predominant on the hanging-wall side and pyrite replaced in part by sphalerite on the footwall. A northsouth diabase dyke cuts through the ore zone near its east end. The Normetal mill produces a copper concentrate and a zinc concentrate which are shipped, respectively, to Noranda, Que., and Newcastle, Penn., U.S.A., for further treatment. The present paper deals with the milling of ore from what is known as No. 3 orebody. This is a lenticular body of high-zinc ore lying co the east of the diabase dyke, along the line of strike of the main ore zone, which extends westward from the dyke. On its northern side, No. 3 orebody is in contact along most of its length with a narrow band of copper ore which is highly oxidized.

Introduction Since 1930 numerous improvements have been made in equipment designed for the mechanical removal of broken ore in underground mining operations. New applications of mechanical equipment, as? well as improvements and adaptations of well established systems, are being made continually. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss present-day equipment for the removal or transfer of broken ore by means of a powered hoist and scraper arrangement. The terms used throughout the paper are those commonly employed in the trade literature and by mining men. The terms slusher hoist, hoist, and scraper hoist are used inter-changeably to mean a machine, powered by compressed air or electricity, with drums for the winding of wire rope. The tail rope, also known as the pull-back rope or return rope, drags the empty scraper toward the tail-sheave, that is, back to the loading point. No attempt is made to cover the entire field of application of scraping methods. Rather it is the? writer&apos;s desire to emphasize the fundamental principles of scraping practice and design and to relate them to some modern applications. The available literature on scraping practice has been freely used. together with personal observation and information and advice of practising engineers and representatives of companies manufacturing slushing equipment.

Asimismo, las medidas preventivas se extendieron a las poblaciones de la provincia de Espinar y el Cusco mitigando los efectos de la pandemia.
