This Bureau of Mines report compares the availability of federally owned minerals in Arizona with lands considered favorable for discovery of mineral resources, to deter-mine the extent to which Federal mineral lands in such areas have been withdrawn by legal action or restricted by management practice. Of particular concern are restraints on Federal lands in areas identified as highly favorable for occurrences of valuable mineral deposits. Excluding Indian lands held in trust by the Federal Government, about 32 million acres, 44%, of Arizona's mineral estate is federally owned. This total includes lands with partial Federal mineral ownership. Approximately 16.5 million acres, or 52% of these lands, are available for location or lease. This includes 496,000 acres, 62%, of the lands highly favorable, and 2.6 million acres, 57%, of the lands moderately favorable for locatable minerals in Arizona. All other Federal mineral lands are either withdrawn or restricted, reflecting a wide range of purpose, authority, and impacts on mineral exploration and development.

This report describes the timed release analysis technique that was developed to serve as a tool for assessing the froth flotation cleaning potentials of fine-size coals. Using this developed technique, 16 coals from 10 different coalbeds were tested. All of the coals included in this study were quite amenable to froth flotation with float coal yields ranging from 80.7 to 99.5 percentage points. Float-and-sink analyses of the coals tested are shown to be of limited value in predicting froth flotation cleaning potential. Generally the float-and-sink analyses indicated a better product could be obtained than froth flotation could provide; although, in four of the coals tested froth flotation results were superior to those expected from the gravimetric analysis. The fixed carbon content of the samples collected was found to correlate with the floatability of the coals. The higher rank coals were the most readily floatable coals while the lower rank coals did not respond quite as well to flotation.

Water-swelling fluormicas and fluormontmorillonoids were synthesized and described. They were found predominantly in the system Mg0 - MgF2 - Si02, with varying amounts of Li+ or Na+, Some water-swelling synthetic minerals were prepared with only strontium or lead in the twelvefold position, Water- swelling compounds containing either K+ or Ba+ were not found. The synthesized water-swelling products were shown by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and chemical analysis to be typically two-silica-layer, platy compounds, Except for the complete substitution of fluoride for hydroxyl, the compounds were similar to the natural micas or montmorillonites. The stability and properties of the compounds were further established by electrodialysis, by differential thermal analysis, and by anion and cation exchange methods. Fluoride in the interlayer positions was nonexchangeable except through decomposition of the product. Exchanging the sodium or the lithium of the synthetic fluormicas or fluormontmorillonoids with potassium ion, particularly those derived from KOH provided a product from which a completely inorganic paper of extraordinary flexibility was fabricated. This paper had excellent mechanical and electrical properties except for water adsorption and a high power factor. Neither of these problems was solved during this investigation. However, papers with dielectric strength from 1,500 to 5,000 volts per mil were readily fabricated, particularly from the lithium containing fluormicas or fluormontmorill onoids.

The Ambatovy Joint Venture comprises an operating lateritic nickel mine, ore slurry pipeline, pressure acid leach plant and nickel refinery in Madagascar. The hydrometallurgical process selected by Sherritt for treatment of the Ambatovy ore is a long-term, sustainable approach to producing nickel. Sulphur, used to prepare hydrogen sulphide, which is used to produce mixed sulphide intermediate, is recovered in the refinery as ammonium sulphate fertilizer. Additional sulphur is used to generate sulphuric acid for treatment of the ore in the high pressure acid leach (HPAL) step; fossil fuel consumption is minimized by using the heat generated from the exothermic reaction between sulphur and oxygen in the acid plant to produce power and steam. Steam consumption is minimized by design of efficient flashing and preheat systems for HPAL, while the high temperature of the HPAL step serves to minimize acid consumption. Fossil fuel consumption by the operation as a whole is further minimized by locating the leach plant and refinery near the port of Toamasina and utilizing a 220 km slurry pipeline to transport ore from the mine to the leach plant. In addition, Ambatovy has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability programs such as the biodiversity management program at the mine and local procurement in Madagascar. In this paper, the hydrometallurgical process for nickel and cobalt recovery from Ambatovy ore is described, along with highlights of Ambatovy’s approach to sustainability in Madagascar.

Frente ao crescente número de falhas por fadiga, o projeto considerando cargas cíclicas passou a ser uma fase natural da concepção e otimização de componentes, em especial de setores de responsabilidade, como aeronáutico, automobilístico e de óleo e gás. Em geral, as avaliações se baseiam em resultados de ensaios uniaxiais que empregam máquinas universais servo-controladas de tração-compressão ou tração-tração. Entretanto, embora precisos, tais equipamentos custam centenas de milhares de dólares, apresentam elevado custo operacional e de manutenção e exigem expressivo tempo para a realização dos ensaios. Como alternativas simples e baratas existem as máquinas do tipo flexão alternada (biela-manivela), as quais podem apresentar curvas de vida à fadiga comparáveis ao caso uniaxial se os campos de deformações e tensões nas amostras forem bem conhecidos. Dessa forma, buscando avançar nesse tópico e fazendo uso de refinados modelos não lineares de elementos finitos, este artigo apresenta uma metodologia de ensaios de flexão alternada controlada por deformação (curvas e-N), assim como uma análise crítica dos resultados experimentais. Foram ensaiados um aço SAE 1008 e um alumínio 1200 H14 e, além da geometria recomendada pela ASTM B593, uma nova geometria é proposta para menor dispersão dos resultados experimentais. A metodologia desenvolvida obteve sucesso na condução dos ensaios e a geometria proposta reduziu a dispersão dos resultados para o aço SAE 1008 que apresenta elevado encruamento. As curvas e-N obtidas, além de diretamente úteis para projetos mecânicos, apoiarão comparações futuras com resultados de fadiga uniaxial dos mesmos materiais.

There are a number of high grade niobium deposits worldwide which have been deemed untreatable by flotation due to the very fine grained nature of the in situ pyrochlore, the primary niobium bearing mineral. A known method of recovering extremely fine particles is through the use of chelating reagents such as hydroxamic acids which have a strong affinity for transition metals. However, one of the major issues in the flotation of niobium bearing minerals using hydroxamic acids is the corresponding recovery of other transition metal gangue minerals including magnetite, hematite, and pyrite. In order to better understand the differences in behavior of niobium and iron bearing minerals in flotation with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) at a range of pulp temperatures, a Box-Behnken experimental design was employed. Regression models for the global recovery of iron indicated that iron mineral recovery was significantly influenced by both BHA and SHMP dosage. Upon examinination of flotation products by semi-quantitative XRD, it was observed that recovery of iron oxide and sulphide minerals (hematite, magnetite, goethite, and pyrite) was problematic at high benzohydroxamic acid dosage, while sodium hexametaphosphate was mainly helpful for carbonate mineral depression. Iron rich carbonates (likely an iron rich dolomite) largely reported to the tails with increased SHMP dosage.

This paper is the second report of the results of the United States Bureau of Mines twenty-third semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper, reporting data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 31293. A third and concluding paper giving the results of other tests will be published as soon as these tests have been completed. The present paper deals with the data of the twenty-third semiannual survey presented in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government motor gasoline. The sample numbers used are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 3129, with additional data included for copper strip corrosion (method 530.22),4 and sulphur content by the lamp method. Three hundred and twelve samples were collected and analyzed in this survey. Two hundred and seven samples were competitive-price gasolines and one hundred and five samples were premium-price motor fuels.

Introduction It is common experience that on re-heating a fully martensitic steel below the Ac, point, a softer and tougher structure is formed as the tempering temperature is raised. The mechanism of tempering of plain carbon and low-alloy steels has been the subject of many investigations. In a very comprehensive study, Cohen and associates have recently established three different tempering stages, the last of which reaches completion at about 700°F., with heating rates of 5°F. per minute. This latter stage has been established ta be the carbide-forming stage, so that the steel consists of a mixture of ferrite and carbide, which are the metastable equilibrium phases. Any subsequent changes which take place at higher temperatures below the Ac, point in the absence of graphitization or carbide lattice conversion normally consist of agglomeration of the carbide particles. This naturally results in the softening of the steel. However, in many cases the Ac, point, as determined by dilatometry, thermal analysis, etc., only gives a rough estimate of the temperature where the reaction, ferrite plus carbides to austenite, is initiated. This appears to be especially true in the case of alloy steels in which three phases can co-exist in certain temperature ranges. Bain has given data on the three-phase equilibrium in both manganese and nickel steels. In these steels, the formation of austenite at temperatures just above the AeIL apparently involves the diffusion of the alloying elements to the first pools of austenite, thereby making the process very sluggish. As a consequence, the critical Ac points determined by ordinary methods at normal rates of heating can be quite distant from the true equilibrium Ae temperatures.

Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. Geochemical studies were under- taken in the Breckenridge mining district to test the effectiveness of soil and rock-chip samples in high- lighting known mineralization in the district, and in locating sites of possible porphyry-type mineralization, if such mineralization is present in the area. Soil sampling can be done more quickly and more cheaply, but it does not provide a direct site- specific sample of mineralized rock. In well-developed soils, supergene effects may mask and/or displace primary hypogene effects; and even in places where the soils are poorly- developed, as in the Breckenridge district, the masking effects may be felt. Soil anomalies, if present, likely will be of lower amplitude and more diffuse (widespread) than corresponding rock-chip anomalies. On the other hand, detailed rock-chip surveys are more time-consuming and expensive, even though they yield direct geologic information in addition to the chemical data. The goals of the combined soil and rock-chip programs were (1) to com- pare the data from the two; and (2) test the effectiveness in identifying significant chemical anomalies with respect to the geology of the district, as it is presently understood.

In recent years, the value to Australia of the introduction of a system of resource rent taxation on the mining industry has been frequently debated. The forms that this rate of return based tax could take, and the impli- cations on government revenue and mining com- pany profitability have been discussed at some length. Further, the selective application of this taxation scheme to certain mining industry sectors has received considerable attention. This study takes the form of a survey of the taxation history of one significant Australian mining venture, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. The conditions faced by this company during its history are used as a base for the imposition of rent taxation schemes. Comparisons are drawn between the historical taxation liability of the company and that which would have been incurred if a resource rent form of taxation had been in existence. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that while the company can be con- sidered to have been a successful enterprise during most of its history, it has not achieved a level of profitability which would warrant the collection of any form of excess profits Tax.

Reconciliation is a powerful tool used by mining operations to compare the mass and grade of ore produced with what was estimated before mining. The primary objective of reconciliation is to verify that the estimated planned metal production is achieved during processing, allowing issues to be identified for which adjustments can be made throughout the mining value chain to improve recovery and maximise efficiency. Traditionally, the mine plan is based on estimated mine grades using sampled exploration drill hole or blasthole grades. Reconciliation discrepancies between the mine plan and mill are common due to such factors as insufficient or non-representative sampling, poorly conceived models, or unrecognised blast movement. MineSense Technologies Limited® (MTL) has developed an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor-based ore classification system that is installed on mining equipment to provide real-time grade estimates of run-of-mine material at bucket, truck, or belt-scale. Bucket level grade estimates provide insights into grade variations at the mine face that were never before available. This data set eliminates some of the leading causes of reconciliation discrepancies and enables tracking of tonnages and grades from the mine face to the processing plant at bucket resolution with confidence. Bucket-by-bucket grades at the mine face enable dynamic optimisation of the mine plan to stabilise the mill feed grade through blending of mine and stockpile loads. Beyond stabilising feed grade, Mine to Mill reconciliation combined with the full XRF spectrum response can generate proxy relationships to ore characteristics like hardness and recovery. These properties can then be predicted at the mine face, enabling further optimisation of the downstream mill feed, not only for grade, but also for power and water consumption, reagent addition, and recovery. This paper presents the benefits of MTL technology for grade reconciliation and mill performance optimisation at a Cu Mine in BC (Canada).

A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated potential availability of domestic nickel from 23 deposits, Evaluations included an estimation of in situ and recoverable resources, applicable mining and processing technologies, and capital and operating costs. Discounted cash flow analysis with a 15-pct rate of return was used to determine the average total cost of production of each operation, Identified in situ resources contain 9.0 million metric tons (t) of nickel; 5.5 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. Demonstrated in situ resources contain 8.2 million t of nickel; 4.8 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. No nickel is available at a total cost of production equal to the January 1983 market price of $3.24 per pound. Analyses indicate that potential annual production can only meet current consumption levels at a total cost of production of $7.60 per pound of nickel, Nickel's availability is contingent on (1) successful adaptability of nickel processing methods to domestic resources, (2) location of a smelting facility, and (3) marketability of byproducts and coproducts. Analyses were performed on the effects of byproduct and coproduct revenues, energy, labor, and transportation costs, and metallurgical recoveries on nickel's availability.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods of separating valuable rare-earth materials from Fe in neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) magnet scrap. A selective oxidation treatment of the scrap oxidized the rare-earth portion while leaving elemental Fe. Magnetic and leaching procedures were tried for separating the metallic Fe and rare-earth oxides, but the extremely fine grain size of the oxidized scrap prevented recovery by either technique. The best separation of rare earths from bulk NdFeB magnet scrap was obtained by dissolution with H2S04 followed by precipitation of recyclable rare-earth salts. By precipitating neodymium-alkali sulfate double salts as an intermediate that can be converted to a variety of useful products, many materials-handling and economic disadvantages found with direct precipitation with fluoride or oxalate were avoided. Iron was removed from magnet leach solutions by precipitation as a jarosite, eliminating a major disposal problem. Research was also conducted with contaminated mixed SmCo5 and NdFeB swarf. Using a flotation-leaching technique allows the SmCo5 to concentrate in the froth, while the grinding-medium contaminant sinks and is removed as tailing. The NdFeB is dissolved by H2S04 during the process.

Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. Critical infrastructure such as the TSF and ROM pad will need to be built early and these areas, as well as the sequential development of the waste dump, will need to be developed within the constraints of structured mining fleet build-up.This paper investigates the influences of haulage estimation accuracy and compares traditional approaches for waste planning to automated approaches using EVORELUTIONÖ.CITATION:Graskoski, S, Craig, S and Myburgh, C, 2013. In the example studied in § 8.4, where w, and w2 were considered to be points, we found that of (w, to W) was nearly one third smaller than o2E (w2 to W), therefore when estimating W one should give more weight to w, than to w2. The demands for increased productivity on the 1967 coal industry have generated new operating trends and fresh approaches to old methods, which have enabled the industry to keep pace with the expanding economy. Changes, while not radical in concept or design, have been plentiful and are marked by the refinement of the already tried, tested and proven. Perhaps not since World War II have there been demands on equipment manufacturers to design and deliver such diversified types of machines as those required by the industry in the past year. Equipment developments-following a plan which calls for higher productivity, lower maintenance costs and greater machine availability- have tended more toward increased horsepower and heavier, more rugged equipment. Electrical and mechanical components, designed in many instances with maximum reliability rather than initial costs as the main criterion, have contributed to the improvements in over-all performance. High-strength, specialty steels are finding use in a wide range of equipment applications. The horsepower capacity of electric motors being installed is more frequently being rated on a continuous basis rather than the former one hr or less and, as a result, fewer failures now occur because of overloading. These developments reflect the pyramiding cost of equipment down-time and represent definitive progress in reducing the magnitude of the problem.

The effect of impurities on the flowsheet in the smelting and refining circuits for copper, lead and zinc is reviewed and the interflow of by-poduct metals from copper, lead and zinc plants is pointed out. The principal points of separation of all impurities in the circuits are indicated and the additional steps added to these circuits in order to effect impurity separation me shown. In this day and age, when difficult metallurgy is mentioned, one thinks of the extraction of more refractory or possibly the alkaline earth or rare-earth metals. It is true that the extraction of metals having a high affinity for oxygen and deleterious solubility for that element in the liquid metal, affords some of the most difficult extractive metallurgy problems. When this is coupled with an affinity for hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon a devious approach is required that sometimes rivals the complexity of the metallurgy with which this paper deals. The objective of this contract as to prepare a detailed, readily usable handbook on dust control techniques for longwall mining operations. Information was gathered from available literature, and through contacts with industry and government personnel. The handbook describes those methods of dust control applicable to today's longwall mining systems, and contains sufficient design elements to assist operators with problems in testing or implementing new control procedures. Complete reference lists are presented at the end of each chapter to direct the reader to additional information.
