The Ti-Fe and Ti-Fe-0 systems were re-examined because of the controversy regarding the existence of Ti2Fe, and to consider all available data points to the existence of Ti,Fe. The Ti-Fe-0 system contains two ternary compounds: E, corresponding to Ti2Fe; and y. SEVERAL authors have investigated the constitution of titanium-rich alloys of the Ti-Fe system. The most extensive study of titanium-rich portions of the Ti-Fe system was by Van Thyne, Kessler, and Hansen,' who investigated this system up to 50 pet Fe and used the highest purity materials available for their alloy preparation (iodide titanium was used for alloys up to 20 pet Fe). According to Van Thyne et al., phase relationships in the region of investigation are governed by phases a,ß, and TiFe. No evidence of an intermetallic compound Ti,Fe was found. although earlier. works by Laves and Wallbaum,' and Duwez and Taylor' reported its existence. Rostoker's study on the occurrence of TilX phases" confirmed the findings of Van Thyne et al. Rostoker proposed that the compound Ti Fe found by Duwez does not exist but is actually a ternary compound, Ti1Fe3O, originated by inadvertent oxygen contamination. The partial isothermal section of the ternary Ti-Fe-0 system as reported by Rostoker' seems to confirm this explanation. In the course of phase diagram work conducted at New York University, however, certain irregularities were observed to be associated with ternary systems of the type Ti-Fe-X. The ternary phase 6, observed in the systems Ti-Fe-Mo' and Ti-Fe-V." was found to be structurally identical to the com-pound Ti2Fe as reported by Duwez and Taylor, and to Rostoker's compound Ti1,Fe2O. Since the amount of oxygen possibly present in the Ti-Fe-Mo and Ti-Fe-V systems could not account for the observed amounts of the compound, it appears that the d phase in these systems is not Ti,Fe,O. On the other hand, considering the amounts of the 6 phase, particularly in the Ti-Fe-Mo system, the location of the phase was uncertain. It was felt that the introduction of the Ti2Fe phase would alleviate some of the inconsistencies of the two systems. Because of the uncertainties relating to the phase Ti2Fe, or Ti1Fe2O, it appeared worthwhile to re-examine the Ti-Fe and Ti-Fe-O systems in the vicinity of these compounds with highly sensitive metallographic techniques and with X-ray methods. Experimental Procedure Alloy Preparation—For the study of the binary system four alloys were prepared, containing 26.9 (30 wt pct), 34.0 (37.5 wt pet), 41.2 (45 wt pet), and 56.3 (60 wt pet) atomic pet Fe, and for the ternary Ti-Fe-O system 18 alloys were prepared in the composition range of 1.6 to 16.9 atomic pet 0 and 24.3 to 55.7 atomic pet Fe. The materials used for the Ti-Fe alloys were iodide titanium (99.98 pet Ti, 0.002 pet 0) and Ferro-vac-E iron (99.95 pet Fe, 0.0052 to 0.0072 pet 0). For the Ti-Fe-O study the materials used were sponge titanium containing less than 0.06 pet 0, Ferrovnc-E iron, and Baker's analyzed TiO2. The nominal weight and atomic percentages of the ternary alloys prepared are shown in Table I. Melting—Charges of 10 to 15 g were melted in a nonconsumable arc furnace in argon atmosphere according to the technique described elsewhere.'" Since there was practically no weight loss through the various stages of melting and oxygen losses have not been observed previously, it appeared justifiable to use nominal composition for interpretation of data. Iodide titanium control buttons, of the same mass as the Ti-Fe charges, and melted under the same conditions, were used to check hardness pickup during melting. A hardness increase of 2 to 3 Vhn was found. Heat Treatment—The specimens were annealed in quartz capsules under argon. "The current California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) practice based on AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is to use the O’Neill and Reese method (FHWA, 1999) for calculating the side resistance and base resistance of Cast-in-Drilled-Hole (CIDH) piles / drilled shafts. In this calculation, end bearing is typically neglected for piles constructed using a wet method due to questionable reliability of end bearing resulting from soil disturbance and inadequate cleaning of the base. Pressure grouting below the tips of drilled shafts in cohesionless soils has long been used worldwide to provide reliable end bearing capacity, but for decades it was relatively unused in this country. It has been used increasingly in the United States over the last decade. Before this project tip grouting has not been utilized on or accepted by Caltrans to maximize piles end bearing capacity. This project proved that tip grouting to mobilize reliable base resistance can be successfully implemented on a full-scale bridge project requiring over 350 large diameter shafts.For the Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project, Shimmick/FCC/Impregilo, JV utilized a temporary Oscillator casing to the full depth to install CIDH piles. Piles were constructed by the wet method and then pressure grouted below the pile tip. A tip grouting procedure for these large diameter shafts was developed and tested to specifically address the geology and constraints of the project. This procedure was then proven during the Load Testing of test piles during the Test Shaft construction phase of the project. Tests showed a minimum reliable base resistance of 150 ksf could be mobilized in very dense sand at a downward movement of 5% of the pile diameter for piles ranging from 4.9 to 8.2 feet in diameter. By tip grouting, the length and diameter of the piles were significantly reduced."

Improved methods of mining have accompanied the introduction of mechanical loading, of which there are a great many varieties, but this multiplicity of mining brings new problems and greatly increases the importance of managing over a few years ago. Few mines operating today have been opened with the intention of mechanizing throughout. The problem of mechanization is to change over a mine heretofore operated by hand methods and to select machinery that will fit the old system with the least number of changes, the aim being not to disrupt or to completely change the original plan. The organization of mechanical and electrical forces is a problem in mechanical loading, and each individual mine presents its own problems. Plans which may succeed in one mine may fail in another and upon the management rests the responsibility of deciding the best method in each case.

This work is a codification and annotation of the Congressional enactments relating to minerals, mineral lands, and mining. It covers every enactment of Congress from the original ordinance of 1785 to the present time, as well as all sections of the Revised Statutes of the United States relating to these subjects. These laws are grouped according to their general subject matter, and are arranged thereunder in numerical or chronological order. Many of the mining statutes include matter not pertinent to the subject, and only those parts of such acts are quoted as will properly show their relation to minerals and mineral lands and indicate how they should be construed. Some mining acts have been repealed or have become obsolete, and others have become incorporated substantially in sections of the Re- vised Statutes; but these are retained in order to show the changes made, and the constructions placed thereon by the courts are given as aids in construing the new or repealing acts. The annotations consist of legal propositions abstracted from the decisions of the various courts and executive officers of the Govern- ment that have interpreted the sections and statutes so codified. These legal propositions are arranged under the different sections and acts with appropriate headings, titles, and subtitles, in logical order, exhibiting the present status of each particular section or act and its application to the subject of mines and mineral lands. The annotations do not purport to be abstracts of decisions on the sub- stantive law of mines and mining generally, but are limited strictly to the interpretation placed on a given section or act definitely re- ferred to by a court or executive officer by the number of the section of the Revised Statutes or the volume and page of the Statutes at Large in which the Congressional enactment is found. It may be observed that the legal propositions stated are not always pertinent to the particular section or act under which they are classed and of which they purport to give a construction. The arrangement, however, is not an arbitrary one, but is so made for the reason that the courts or officers in the construction of a particular section or act definitely referred to by number or volume and page incorporated in the decision matter not strictly pertinent to the par- ticular section or act so designated. Since 1965 several researchers have independently developed computer models for designing gathering belt and surge bin capacities in underground coal mine belt systems. Table 1 summarizes the models applicable to U.S. mining systems. Most of the models, employ the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Basically, the belt loading at each loading point is randomly produced from probability distributions. In some cases, a combination of deterministic calculations and probability distributions are used to simulate the loading. Once the loading is simulated, it is systematically moved through the belt system in a deterministic fashion based on belt speeds, belt lengths, and storage bin discharge rates. The coal flowing from each loading point is tracked as it moves through the belt system. When the loading from tm different sources combines on a belt or in a surge bin, checks are made to determine if capacities have been exceeded. If capacities have been exceeded the amount of spillage is calculated. At the end of the simulated time period, the cumulative spill- age is used to evaluate the belt and surge bin capacities. Naturally, a considerable amount of spillage indicates the capacities are unacceptable. Acceptable capacities are generally indicated by minimal spillage. Numerous trial simulations are often necessary to find the acceptable capacities.

An investigation of the factors af-fec.ting the inter-zonal flow of fluids in the casing-wellbore annrc1rt.s of an oil or gas ivell is presented Laborntory tests revealed that failure of the caring-cement bond allows communi-cation of fluid at pressure differentials near 1.000 psi. Perforating with a 11011011: carrier gun does not shatter or crack the cement sufficiently to allow communication through these cracks and does not seriously affect the casing-cement bond failure pressure. The pressure to cause communication at the casing-cement bond can he increared to 3,000 psi by. limiting pipe deformation during cementing and subsequent operations. Communication can be prevented, however. up to pressures sufficient to cause the cement to fail or the casing to col-lapse, by attaching to the casing a seal ring of deformable ruhber molded between two steel flanges. When installed, one flange is attached rigidlv to the casing to serve as back-up for the gasket While tile other flange is movable. To date, these gasket seal rings have been field-tested in 27 Wells. Althotrgh communication has been noted in two wells, inter-zonal flow has been prevented in other wells in the same area by installing more seal rings between the communicaring zones. INTRODUCTION The inter-zonal flow of fluids behind casing cemented in oil wells during normal production or stimulation operations is a major operating problem. If it cccurs during production operations. it can seriously limit the pressure to which a reservoir may be depleted without harmful invasion of unwanted fluids. If it occurs during stimulation operations, it may preclude the possibility of stimulating the desired zone. This communication can be caused by failure of the bond between the casing and cement, failure of the bond between the cement and formation, or failure of the cement itself. This paper presents the results of an investigation of factors affecting com-munication at the casing-cement bond and methods which aid in preventing it. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS The laboratory tests performed in this study were divided into three phases. The first phase consisted of tests to determine if perforating would shatter and crack the cement sheath so severely that communication would occur through the cement itself. The second phase consisted of tests to determine more precisely the cause for the casing-cement bond failure. The third phase consisted of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various de-formable seals attached to the casing in preventing communication. EFFECT OF PERFORATING, The effect of perforating was invest~gated in tests performed with apparatus shown on Fig. 1. Cement was poured into the annulur space hetween 5%-in. casing and 8%-in. casing and allowed to cure for 72 hours. The apparatus was then perforated with a hollow carrier gun containing eight duPont 26-A shaped charges. Bull plugs were placed over the perforations in the 8 5/8-in. casing and hydraulic pressure was applied inside the 5 1/2i-in. casing. The pressure to cause fluid communication past the cement sheath was observed and termed the "bond failure pressure". In 1986, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 7,940-acre Southern Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-029), and the 5,750-acre Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-028) in order to evaluate their mineral resources. The wilderness study areas are located in San Diego County, CA, about 20 miles southeast of San Diego. No mineral resources were identified in the Southern or Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Areas, based on literature, field observations, and sample results. The wilderness study areas are underlain by a complex blend of Late Jurassic, moderately metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Evidence of mineralization is not obvious.

Several aspects of mine safety grounding systems and equipment are studied. Electrolytic corrosion of test ground beds has shown a high incidence of stray current damage, while efforts to build a reliable continuous ground bed monitor continue. Laboratory and field investigations of trailing cable splices have yielded strong evidence that splices can contribute to stray current problems in the mines, but a method is suggested for discovering deteriorating splices before they pose a serious hazard. A prototype device has been constructed to evaluate the electrical resistance of rail bonds underground as a source of stray current. Theoretical modeling of ground electrodes, has advanced considerably, now covering measurements of large cylindrical electrodes, multiple-rod ground beds, rod electrodes in stratified earth, and measurement of connected beds. A prototype instrument design is given for a potential gradient plotter to quickly evaluate voltage gradients near earth electrodes. Additional ground-check monitor testing is reported.

Water has become a scarce resource in quality. Companies in the ornamental stones sector use water intensively in their processes. Given the current situation, it is imperative to rationalize this feature that at first is related to the reduction of consumption, through no waste. Considering the importance of environmental preservation of this resource and also to comply with the legislation that governs the procedure for processing of ornamental stones, new alternatives should be available for the maintenance of current activities and promoting the development / growth of the sector on the principles of environmental sustainability and economic in future scenarios. The ornamental stones processing industries, especially for micro and small enterprises, require the implementation of a management program that optimizes the use of this feature, since the techniques individually processed operate with three basic processes dependent on water use: split blocks, polishing and finishing slabs. This technology requires a large volume of water resources and control measures involving operating recirculation water can minimize power consumption, making the company more profitable and sustainable. This is a survey of literature, associated with technical reports provided by partner companies and government agencies. This study aimed to the organization and provision of theoretical knowledge about the subject matter coupled with management practices, which may be reproduced or re-purposed in ornamental stones processing companies. It should be noted that the industry in question is lacking in technical expertise for the implementation of sustainable attitudes relevant to water reuse.

Security engineering is similar to other forms of engineering – the design is guided by the loads, materials, and desired function. For facility design, the load is the threat. Facilities that are designed with considerations for explosive hazards are designed with a shot, or series of shots, of a given size and distance from key locations. These facilities range from office buildings and industrial sites in developed nations to military and police stations in contingency areas. The challenge is the design shots are not often communicated to facility owners and managers. If the hazards change, whether it’s due to an increased capacity to cause damage by a threat or a decrease in capacity by a structure, not knowing the design shot means not knowing if security design needs to change. Blast modeling is an engineering tool that can be used to reverse engineer what a facility is suitable for, as well as be a tool for modifying security design for new conditions. This paper will examine military and civilian examples, including a case study of a military facility that did not know their as-built conditions and had to be rapidly closed; due to the determination their security engineering shortcomings could not be mitigated.

The objective of the study was to estimate the largest shear displacement that could be expected on a pre-existing fracture located in the repository area, due to the heat release from deposited waste. Two-dimensional numerical analyses using UDEC have been performed. The maximum shear displacement, at the fracture centre, amounts to 0.2 – 13.8 cm depending on fracture parameters. The fracture extension, friction angle and shear stiffness are found to be the most important. Le but de cette étude est de déterminer le déplacement maximal en cisaillement qui puisse se développer le long d'une fracture préexistante en réaction à la chaleur dégagée par les déchets radioactifs enfouis dans la roche. Les analyses numériques ont été réalisées à l'aide du code 2D UDEC. Le déplacement maximal en cisaillement enregistré au centre de la fracture varie entre 0.2 et 13.8 cm en fonction des propriétés de la fracture. L'ouverture, l'angle de friction et la rigidité au cisaillement semblent avoir une influence dominante sur les résultats. Zielsetzung der Studie war die Abschätzung der maximalen Scherverschiebung, die auf einer innerhalb des Endlagergebietes existierenden Rissfläche infolge der Wärmeabstrahlung des eingelagerten Materials zu erwarten war. Es wurden zwei-dimensionale numerische Berechnungen mit UDEC durchgeführt. Die maximale Scherverschiebung im Zentrum der Rissfläche beträgt 0.2-13.8 cm, abhängig von den Risseigenschaften. Dabei hat sich herausgestellt, dass Rissgrösse,Reibungswinkel und Schersteifigkeit den grössten Einfluss haben.

As a part of the 1-15 Reconstruction Project, static and dynamic (high-strain) testing methods formed the basis to estimate long-term axial capacities, and to assess the magnitudes of bearing capacity gains (setup) from the end of installation to the time of static/dynamic tests weeks later. This paper summarizes the results of nine full scale pile load tests to failure in compression, and how the designers used these data to finalize pile selection and penetration criteria bridge-by-bridge in the final design stages. Soil conditions along the project alignment ranged from deep, lightly over-consolidated Lake Bonneville clays interbedded with granular strata of varying consistency, to sites dominated by dense alluvial deposits of cohesionless soils well above the water table. The test sites were selected to bracket the conditions that are expected. Twelve-, 16-, and 24-inch-OD pipe piles are to be used to support the new bridges. The team plans to impact-drive all piles closed-end to final penetrations. The test piles varied from 35-ft-long pipes driven to refusal in the shallow dense sands at some sites, to 115-ft-long pipes stopping at 3 blows per foot in predominantly cohesive deposits. The capacities gained with time proved to be reasonably predictable, and significant setup was noted both in the cohesive and cohesionless strata. The test program objectives included providing the means to estimate long-term capacities from short-term (24- to 48-hour) restrikes following installation of foundation piles during production driving operations.

"Besides valuable metals of Cu, Sn, WO3, Zn, there are S, Ag, CaF2, In and so on in a complex ore deposit in south China (which belongs to Hu Nan Shizhuyuan Non-ferrous Metal Limited Liability). Although it proved reserve amounts to 3.5×107 ton, its crystal character limits its utilization in large-scale. It features complex relationships between valuable minerals, finest crystallized particle size, low-graded valuable metals (Cu 0.30%, Zn 0.5-0.7%, Sn 0.2%, W<0.1%). If only tungsten minerals are considered, it means WO3 grade is too low (the cut-off grade of WO3 is 0.1% in China). Only Cu and Sn minerals are recovered from 2006 and Cu recovery is less than 70%, Sn 15-20%. Other valuable metals of W, Zn, S and CaF2 were lost in the tailings. To make good use of the ore, the technology of fully recovering Cu, Sn, W, Zn, CaF2 and rare metals are in urgent need. After systematic researches, the flow sheet of "bulk flotation of Cu-Zn minerals at first, then Cu-Zn separation, then recovering sulphide by flotation, then recovering iron minerals by magnetic separation, then bulk flotation of Sn-W minerals after desliming" is developed. Furthermore, specific Sn-W collectors of BK411 and BK412 are applied into the processes and better indexes are obtained. The industrial indexes are listed as followings: the content of Cu, Zn, Sn, WO3 of ROM ore is 0.31%, 0.65%, 0.13%, 0.03%; Cu and Zn recovery are 82.23% and 37.79% respectively; 63.76% of Sn and 34.34% of WO3 go into the Sn-W bulk concentrates. Economic benefits are remarkable."

The use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment is well known. Its use to measure grinding efficiency was presented by C.A. Rowland, Jr. at an AIME meeting in 1976. However, due to a bureaucratic error, the paper was never submitted for publication. This metric has nevertheless been adopted by industry as a widely used standard. The purpose of this paper is to re-present and update the application of this tool as a standard for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Definition ?standard, n. something established for use as a rule or basis of comparison in measuring or judging capacity, content, extent, value, quality, etc.; as standards of weight and measure? Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.

Emulsion explosives have become the product of choice for many blasting applications and are not limited to just extreme wet hole conditions or special application environments as in the past. Today’s novel emulsion technology has evolved over many decades, allowing a great diversity of formulations, Emulsion explosives can be effectively designed to produce very high energies, cap sensitive high explosive cartridges to bulk blasting agents, with varying viscosities, stable VOD’s, excellent water resistance, long shelf life and sleep time. They are also conducive to the mixture of emulsion, An/F0 blends in varying proportions and are amenable to any type of sensitizer. The key to a stable, reliable and consistent emulsion formulation is the careful mixing of the internal phase, which consists of a solution of oxidizer salts suspended as microscopically fine droplets, with the surrounding continuous fuel phase. There are few blasting applications today where some form of an emulsion explosive cannot fit the application. In massive, hard rock, dense, tightly jointed and fine grained rock types, the emulsion explosives are the best choices in creating new fracture networks for good fragmentation with a few alternatives. In such environments, emulsions with expanded drill patterns often result in better economics than the use of straight AnLFo. This paper will cover emulsion formulations, sensitizing options, product testing, material handling, and blast optimization, Emulsion explosives characteristics have also proven to reduce adverse environmental effects such as noxious fumes, ground vibration, and airblast while still remaining cost effective.
