THE Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Asbestos, Que. has operated for a number of years, supplying the parent company, Johns-Manville, raw material for asbestos products. The mine is situated in the 70-mile-long serpentine belt running from Asbestos, Que. on the west to East Broughton on the east. This district is the most important producing area in the world of quality spinning-fiber asbestos, with 11 operating mines supplying 70 pct of the world's needs. The Jeffrey mine, located 90 miles from Montreal and approximately 35 miles southwest of Thetford, accounts for 50 pct of the Canadian asbestos output. Production from the Canadian serpentine belt is the chrysotile asbestos, which is considered the best available for spinning. Consumers in the United States prefer the clean, fine fibers of the Canadian chrysotile of the type produced by the Jeffrey mine. Mining In 1881, when the mine was first opened, all work, including drilling, was done by hand. The deposit, located on a hillside, was first worked as a sidehill cut by hand drilling 15-ft holes and blasting with black powder. The fiber was chiselled from the broken rock. Hand derricks, later powered by horses, were used to raise the rock as the pit deepened. Eventually, the pit became so deep that derricks were, by necessity, replaced by aerial tramways. In the late 1930's, further deepening of the open pit, with the resulting constriction of the pit bottom brought about the need for altering the mining system then in use. The high ratio of overburden to be handled to mill ore mined and the value of surface structures, not company property, that would be destroyed in expanding the area of the pit, definitely indicated vertical rather than horizontal expansion would have to be used. One exception to this was that a small area on company property to north and east of the pit could be opened up. The mining problem then resolved itself into two phases; make the small lateral expansion and as rapidly as possible choose a mining method that would expand the mine vertically. Several methods for vertical expansion were studied and rejected. Methods considered included shrinkage stoping, block caving, glory holing, and various modifications of open workings. Block caving was finally accepted as the most suitable method of underground development. Cost factors and production were important factors in the decision, also, the asbestos mines in the Thetford area were already having success with this method. Original plans provided for the lateral expansion of the open mine where possible and beginning the underground operation. This program was based on the open pit being worked out in 1954, with the underground development and production gradually increasing until the open mine was depleted. In 1949, the plan was changed to allow underground development to progress at maximum so that underground output would be 550 tons per hr by 1951. Any deficit in ore would be mined from the open pit. This change permitted extending the life of the open pit through 1964 and in this time would make available a large quantity of readily attained ore. Block Caving at The Jeffrey Mine Plans for the underground operation were formulated on a 12,000-ton-per-day basis, and the adaptability of block caving methods to high production presented a desirable situation. As shown in the main-haulage plan, a continuous loop was laid out for smooth operation of the underground railroad from the loading points to the underground crusher. A feature encountered at the Jeffrey mine, as well as other asbestos mines using caving methods, is the large size of caved material, requiring that ore be crushed before hoisting.

The author attempted to concurrently apply the US Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and the Australian VALMIN Code to a complex mineral property appraisal assignment. This led the author into many severe difficulties. These difficulties included the high standards needed in the work of others, and information and statements needed from the client. The exercise also highlighted many positive features of both documents. Some conflicts were found between the two documents. Implications and thoughts regarding the development of a set of US minerals appraisal standards are discussed.

"PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONOf more than 300 bituminous mines examined by Crichton 5 and his assistants in connection with litigation in Indian Creek Valley, Payette County, Pa., only four were found to have alkaline water. That work and many observations from of the authors have shown the general prevalence or acid drainage from bituminous coal mines. In connection with investigations pertinent to coal-mine drainage that are being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, it was noted with considerable interest therefore, that a mine in the Thick Freeport bed about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh had no acid water in the workings, As it was thought that this condition might be common to all mines,this condition in this bed most of them were visited, samples of the outflow and from different parts of the mine inside were examined, and such general information as was available was gathered.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors acknowledge with thanks the courteous assistance of mine officials in connection with collecting the data for this paper, and of the analytical and coal laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for analyses."

"Since 2010, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has performed eight full-scale compressive load tests on large-diameter pipe piles at four different project locations across the state. All of the piles were 42-in diameter, open-ended pipes driven to practical refusal on sedimentary bedrock with D125-32 diesel hammers from three separate manufacturers. The rapid load test method in general accordance with ASTM D7383-10 (Statnamic method) was used along with high-strain dynamic testing and subsequent signal matching. Results of these tests indicate that the axial nominal resistance of these piles in compression is not controlled by geotechnical considerations when driven with an appropriately sized hammer and installation criterion. Rather, the predominantly elastic load-deflection behavior of the piles under compressive load suggests the axial nominal compressive resistance is controlled by the structural capacity of the pile. In all instances, the rapid load tests indicated a nominal resistance exceeding that produced by high-strain dynamic tests due to insufficient hammer energy to fully mobilize resistance. In all cases, the hammers used were able to easily install the piles through the soil overburden. Mobilizing a larger hammer simply to demonstrate high-strain dynamic resistance is not economical or practical. This paper presents the subsurface conditions at each location, the ensuing test results, and the ramifications for future projects in Minnesota utilizing large-diameter open-ended pipe piles.INTRODUCTIONThe Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has recently performed eight full-scale compressive load tests on large-diameter pipe piles at four different project locations across the state. The four project locations described in this paper where pile load testing was performed are shown in Figure 1 and exist in the southeastern portion of Minnesota. The projects are all major bridges crossing the Mississippi River in three instances and the St. Croix River just above the Mississippi River in the other instance. The first project is the TH 61 Mississippi River crossing in Hasting, MN where two load tests were conducted. The second is the TH 36 St. Croix River crossing in Stillwater, MN where two load tests were performed. The third project is the I-90 Mississippi River crossing in Dresbach, MN where three load tests were conducted. The final project is the TH 43 Mississippi River crossing in Winona, MN where one load test was performed."

Polyethylene is widely used for packing applications. Different grades of polyethylene, LLDPE and LDPE play a major role in the film blowing industry. The use of nanoclay in polymer matrices (non-polar) requires the use of a compatibilizer agent, ethylene graft maleic anhydride copolymer (PE-g-MA), which acts as a bridge for nanoclay-matrix-interaction. In our study, blown films of LLDPE, LDPE, and their blends were produced using a twin screw extruder. The combination of PEs as matrix, montmorillonite (MMT) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) intended to improve mechanical and thermal properties. Nanocomposites films with 1 wt% of montmorillonite and 0.5–1.0 wt% silver nanoparticles were prepared by blow extrusion and evaluated. Nanoclay intercalation/exfoliation degree was investigated by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated. The results showed optimum dispersion at intercalation/exfoliation levels for polyethylene nanocomposite (PENC), slight increasing in mechanical and especially improvement in thermal properties.

Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. It is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5 Mt per annum. Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. These data form the basis for forecasting and on-going systems analysis which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions, visual grade estimates and draw point sampling are routinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Draw point recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Statistical variance controls are also employed to analyse mine and plant performance and guide actions.

I had the opportunity recently to visit a magazine site of a major explosives company. It was fun to see the storage areas again and it was really interesting to see one of the old magazines that probably dated back before my time. Now that’s an old one. As son Tom says, “When Dad was young the Dead Sea was just sick.” While the magazine has been upgraded with a modern lock to match today’s standards it still has the old tumbler lock that is opened with the large bronze key. Those old tumbler locks were just about standard on magazines years ago. Those bronze keys were heavy and would make a good display item today or maybe a substitute for a blackjack. I don’t think the old locks would stop the modern criminal but then in those days we were all less sophisticated. And maybe I shouldn’t say this but honesty was a bit more prevalent then. Maybe ‘cause old fashioned police brutality still prevailed.

Introduction Will cogeneration be a major power source in the future? The location of electric power generating plants has changed. In 1900, more than 50% of electricity was generated by industrial plants. Since then, industrial plant generation of electricity greatly decreased to 17% in 1950 and to only 3% in 1980. Changing economics in electric power generating costs, though, may allow cogeneration to reverse this trend. Cogeneration has been defined as the simultaneous production of electric (mechanical) and thermal energy from a single energy source. Some applications are considered to be byproduct generation of electricity from industrial, thermal operations. Cogeneration is not new to the mining and minerals industry. Smelters and steel mills have used waste heat to generate electricity. Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 The potential for increased industrial cogeneration of electricity is related to the March 9, 1978 enactment of the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA). The US Supreme Court ruled that PURPA is constitutional. The court upheld requirements that utilities interconnect to cogenerators. It also ruled that 100% of avoided costs be used as the guideline for electricity sales by a qualifying facility (QF) to a utility. The state of New York established a floor price $0.06/kWh for electricity sales from a QF to a utility. It is obvious, then, that a cogenerator must first establish price and then become a qualifying facility in order to sell electricity to a utility. Proposed cogeneration plants The estimated industrial cogeneration potential for the years 1986 to 2000 is 9500 to 25,000 MW. Industries represented in this cogeneration estimate are pulp and paper, petroleum, chemicals, food, textiles, rubber, plastics, steel, lumber and wood, cement, glass, metal fabrication, and industrial parks. A cogeneration plant has been proposed for the Union Carbide chemical plant in Institute, WV. A steam turbine/generator would be installed to replace the pressure-reducing valve in the 2.7 MPa (400 psig) header. Scott Paper Co., Mobile, AL, proposed a cogeneration plant using a coal- and wood-fired boiler and a turbine/generator to produce process steam and electric power. A cogeneration system has been proposed for a large oil refining plant. A pulverized coal boiler would produce high-pressure steam to operate a turbine, generator. The exhaust steam from the turbine will go to the process and an existing turbine. Kansas City, MO's Armour meat-processing plant has proposed a cogeneration plant. This proposal is to use a natural gas or oil-fired, gas-driven turbine and a generator. The waste heat from the gas turbine would go to a heat recovery boiler for use as process heat. Dade County, FL is implementing a central energy system to supply electricity, air conditioning, and domestic hot water for five buildings in downtown Miami. The cogeneration system is to provide flexibility, to optimize fuel use efficiency while serving the variable thermal demands. Generation of electricity from municipal waste is not considered to be a cogeneration process but is covered by PURPA. Special considerations are provided for waste/electric power generation to encourage the development of these systems. ?

Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? Uranium, Thorium and transuranic elements ? Rare Earths ? Gold, Silver and platinum group metals (PGM?s) ? Chromium, Copper, Zinc, Nickel, Cobalt ? The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research to evaluate explosion blast effects on typical U.S. mine ventilation stoppings in the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory?s (PRL) Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). An innovative Australian-designed brattice stop-ping was also evaluated. After mine explosion accidents, MSHA conducts investigations to determine the cause(s) as a means to prevent future occurrences. As part of these postexplosion investigations, the condition of underground stoppings, including the debris from damaged stoppings, is documented as evidence of the approximate strength and the direction of the explosion forces. The LLEM data showed that a typical dry-stacked and coated solid-concrete-block stopping survived a total explosion pressure of ~6.7 psi (~46 kPa) and was destroyed at a total explosion pressure of ~7.6 psi (~52 kPa). In comparison, a typical dry-stacked and coated hollow-core concrete block stopping survived a total explosion pressure of ~3.4?4.3 psi (~23?30 kPa) and was destroyed at a total explosion pressure of ~3.6?5.2 psi (~25?36 kPa), depending on the length of the pressure pulse and the value of the pressure-time integral. A typical steel panel stopping design survived a total explosion pressure of 0.8 psi (5.5 kPa) and failed at a total explosion pressure of 1.3 psi (9 kPa). The LLEM data also showed that an obstacle blocking the path of a pressure wave resulted in a higher reflected pressure at the obstacle. An 8-in (20-cm) thick wet-laid solid-concrete-block stopping coated on one side survived a total explosion pressure of ~26 psi (~180 kPa); this stopping was not tested to failure. A 6-in (15-cm) thick wet-laid solid-concrete-block stopping coated on one side survived a total explosion pressure of ~14 psi (~97 kPa) and was destroyed at a total explosion pressure of ~25 psi (~172 kPa). An innovative Australian woven cloth stopping survived an explosion pressure of 4.0 psi (27 kPa) and was destroyed at an explosion pressure of ~6.1 psi (~42 kPa). These results will help investigators determine the approximate explosion forces that destroy or damage stoppings during actual coal mine explosions.

Purpose: This training material focuses on the content of emergency warning messages. Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, people often do not get the information they need for the purpose of taking appropriate action. This safety talk presents a procedure, using mental cues that can be used by senders and receivers of emergency warnings. Intended Use: This material has been developed for use in short safety-training sessions such as start-of-shift safety or Atoolbox@ talks. The information can be presented in approximately fifteen minutes and is appropriate for workers at all experience levels. While the examples and illustrations are taken from the underground coal mining industry, the training can be tailored to any work setting by substituting appropriate examples. Materials Needed: The instructor will need to prepare the figures provided in a form that can be seen by the entire class. Suggested methods include the use of: (1) overhead transparencies, (2) laminated pages that can be held up for small groups, and/or (3) handouts with copies of the figures for each trainee. As a supplement, stickers featuring the communication triangle can be placed on hard hats, telephones or other communication devices to remind workers about the key to effective emergency communication. The Talk: The accompanying script is a guide for presenting this safety talk. Training is enhanced if these materials are covered but not simply read by the trainer. Examples given in this guide are from real experiences. To make training more interesting and effective, the instructor can substitute examples from his/her workplace. "The earliest known use of cobalt was to make blue glass in Mesopotamia before 2000 B.C.E. Since then, innovations across many diverse industrial sectors transformed cobalt into an essential commodity for contemporary society. The physical and chemical properties of the element cobalt and its alloys and compounds make them indispensable for a variety of applications, including aircraft engines, hybrid electric vehicles, machine tools, missile guidance systems, petroleum refining and smartphones. As a major industrialized nation, the United States is a leading consumer of cobalt and cobalt-containing products. However, with few exceptions, U.S. cobaltcontaining ore deposits are of low cobalt grade. Historically, U.S. cobalt mine and refinery output have not met domestic cobalt demand. As a result, U.S. cobalt chemical and alloy producers need to procure most of their cobalt from the international market, which can become susceptible to supply risk.The 1978 Cobalt Crisis illustrates supply risk. At that time, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (then known as Zaire) was the world’s leading producer of mined and refined cobalt. An insurgent invasion of the country’s copper-cobalt mining region during a period of high cobalt demand and low producer inventories caused a temporary supply shortage in the international market. The monthly average cobalt spot price increased from $18/ kg ($8/lb) before the crisis to $99/kg ($45/lb) seven months later. The high price and concern about potential disruptions in supply prompted manufacturers to reduce or substitute for cobalt where possible, and encouraged increased recovery of cobalt from scrap. The DRC has regained its position as the leading producer of mined cobalt globally and continues to be characterized by high governance risks (U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, 2015; World Bank, undated). This article will present current and historical world cobalt production trends, which can help inform discussion about the variety of international supply chain risks consequential to its trade."

Entre estos últimos, la mina Cobriza ha desarrollado un nuevo método de sostenimiento denominado "Shot Fer", el cual satisface el desarrollo de las labores mineras, asegura la estabilidad permanente de las labores subterráneas en terreno deleznable, disminuye los altos costos unitarios en el sostenimiento de las labores subterráneas y garantiza la seguridad contra los accidentes que pueda sufrir el personal que trabaja en la perforación y en las operaciones de sostenimiento.

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon's pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon's pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (15%) of Professor Gershon's pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

"INTRODUCTION Barite is one of the major industrial minerals whose production has increased considerably in the last 10 years. In 1935 domestic production of barite was 218,075 tons and. had increased by 1944 to 515,136 tons. 3/ Most of the primary uses for barite and barite products were developed before 1935, so the increase in barite production reflects the growth of industry in general rather than any recent developments in barite technology.The principal uses for ground and crushed barrite are as a weighting agent in heavy drilling fluids, as a filler in rubber and other materials, as a pigment and extender in paints, and as a flux in glass melt. In addition, a considerable' quantity of barite serves as the raw material for the manufacture of lithopone and barium chemicals.Specifications for barrite vary widely and depend primarily on the use to which the material is put. The primary requisites for barite used in heavy drilling muds -are that it have a minimum specific gravity of 4.2 and be very,low in soluble salts. A minimun barium sulfate content of 92 percent may be specified; but this is less important than the gravity. 4/ In addition before consumption the material must be ground to '92 percent minus 325-mesh. 5/ Lithopone and chemical manufacturers require a minimum of 94 Percent barium sulfate, a maximum of 1.0 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of fluorine. 6/ Barite used as fillers in light-colored products should be of fairly high grade, but the filler used in dark products may be considerably lower grade.Glass barite should contain a minimum of 96 percent barium sulfate, not more than 3 percent moisture, a maxium of 0.2 to 0.4 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of titanium oxide. MR. FOOTE: This paper deals with blasting and mechanical loading. The Union Pacific Coal Company does all of its blasting with permissible powder and electric shooting, but this paper deals principally with blasting in connection with mechanical loading. With the introduction of mechanical loading into the coal fields of southern Wyoming one of the main problems to be taken into consideration was the drilling and blasting of the coal. The methods used in blasting coal for hand loading were found to be ill adapted to the mechanical practice, so numerous tests were conducted from time to time to determine a system or systems whereby the coal might be blasted in a form to be easily handled by the loading units. The general practice in blasting coal for hand loading, for example in a room 24 feet wide and seven feet high with an undercut of seven feet, would be to shoot one or two strong breaking shots in the center and one on each rib. While much of the cut would be blasted down in good lump, some coal would be left hanging at the back and ribs. With hand loading, the miners would have time to pull this coal down with a pick between cars and eventually would clean up the place ready for the cutting machine. The loading machine, however, cannot get this coal down and its operation would be delayed while the men were doing the necessary pick work.

Present day capital costs are analyzed for a 2,000 metric tonne per day (MTPD) pyrite burning plant and compared with a sulphur burning plant of the same capacity. Power, raw material and steam production rates are then compared for the two facility types. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to highlight the impact changing sulphur, pyrite, capital and operating costs have on the relative economics of these feeds. Technological improvement effects on capital cost and energy recovery are also discussed. Besides the steam produced from the burning of pure sulphur or pyrite, plants using an advanced form of heat recovery can produce up to 10 bar steam using heat from acid formation. The quantity depends on the overall water balance which is influenced by such factors as gas strength and product acid concentration. Modern materials and innovative process design also improve the ability to increase the high pressure steam from the roaster boiler in pyrite plants above the traditional 1.25 kg of superheated steam per kg of acid produced.
