PRODUCTION of bituminous coal and lignite increased substantially in 1964. There were upward trends also in consumption, average value, exports, mechanization, and productivity. However, a significant decline in employment continued. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1964-487 million tons-was 6 percent greater than the 459 million tons produced in 1963. The gain was attributed largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities, greater use at coke ovens, and an increase in exports.

However, blasting operations frequently result in complaints and, consequently, insurance claims. The Bureau of Mines examined the wellbore of a vertical gas drainage well in the Mary Lee coalbed to determine the results of specific completion procedures in coal. A jet-slotting tool was used to cut four vertical slots through the casing about 1 ft below the coalbed. Even though stimulation treatment pressure was excessive, hydraulically induced channels were contained entirely within the target coal zone. Sand-filled, induced channels were horizontal, inclined, and vertical, and were propagated in directions similar to bedding planes, rock joint, and coal cleat directions measured in the mine. Variable gas flow rates, recorded during the productive life of the well, were attributed to chronic downhole pump malfunction and the slotted casing below the production zone.

The orogenic gold deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Orogenic gold deposits are typically quartz vein deposits formed in fault and shear systems at crustal levels within and above the brittle ductile transition zone, at depths of 3 12 km and temperatures from 200¦ to 400¦C. In New Zealand, orogenic gold deposits are found in regionally metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age. The deposits in Paleozoic rocks include those at Golden Blocks in Northwest Nelson, Lyell and Reefton on the West Coast, and Preservation Inlet in Fiordland. Quartz veins are developed along shear zones that dip steeply and generally strike parallel to the axes of folding in the greywacke and argillite/slate host rocks, although most are discordant to bedding. The lodes are typically less than 1 m wide and extend an average 200 m horizontally and vertically, but the Birthday Reef at Blackwater, Reefton, the largest quartz vein deposit in Paleozoic rocks, averages 60 cm in width and was mined over a strike length of 1070 m, and to a depth of 830 m. Disseminated gold occurs adjacent to the quartz lodes at Globe-Progress and some other Reefton deposits. The deposits in Mesozoic rocks are hosted in schist of Otago and Marlborough, and schist and greywacke of the Southern Alps. The lodes are typically lensoidal, less than 1 m wide and localised along single or multiple parallel shear zones that generally dip steeply, and are discordant to the schist foliation and bedding. A notable exception is Macraes, where the lodes are developed in the semi-concordant, low angle Hyde Macraes Shear Zone that has a strike length greater than 25 km.

The essence of the method consists in creation of drop of opposite sign at the isolating stoppings, by which air losses through the accident district change direction of their motion. The period of reversal is selected in that way so that air may not find itself in the zone of burning. The method of fighting the fire considered was repeatedly used in the coal mines of the Ukraine. The theoretical basis of efficiency and two examples of use of this method by fighting the underground fires are adduced in the paper.

The German Kupferschiefer (copper shale) mining history reaches back over 800 years with its last active mines being shut down in 1990. Increasing metal demands and potential thread of future supply shortages led to the initiation of new exploration programs including feasibility studies for the Spremberg deposit as well as Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded research investigations of Kupferschiefer Waste Dump treatment in the Mansfelder region. This article describes the sensor based sorting results of coarse Kupferschiefer via Near Infrared (NIR) Sorting, being conducted by the department of mineral processing (AMR) in Aachen, Germany. It provides information about the necessity of presorting of the different ore types prior to flotation and puts the NIR Sorting results into context with conventional Kupferschiefer processing. IN the pressure die-casting of zinc alloys it is customary to force the molten alloy under high pressure into a permanent steel die by means of a plunger moving in a bushing that has a clearance on the diameter of the order of 0.002 in. Successful operation of the plunger type of machine requires the presence in the zinc alloy of certain percentages of aluminum. Without these aluminum additions, the normal reaction of molten zinc on ferrous materials causes sticking of the plunger and a complete shutdown of the equipment. All of the zinc alloys used for pressure die-casting today contain approximately 4 per cent of aluminum, which is more than sufficient to make plunger operation feasible. The clearance between the plunger and its bushing is an important matter. As the space becomes larger, there is a loss in effective metal pressure. Ordinary gray cast iron served fairly well and is still used in some machines. However, the rate at which the plunger clearance increases with this material is considered by many to be far too great. There is, therefore, a serious interest in finding new materials more capable of retaining the desired clearance during long periods of use. Today many die casters are using special materials for plungers and bushings selected by the somewhat expensive and time-consuming test of actual experience. An analysis of the problem reveals two possible end points of plunger operation: (1) the building up of zinc-alloy plunger-material reaction products in sufficient bulk to cause sticking and (2) rapid solution, wear or erosion, all of which will increase the clearance to an undesirable extent. If neither of these takes place, the plunger will operate for a long time, of course. The authors have developed a laboratory apparatus in which the action of a plunger moving in a bushing immersed in molten zinc alloy could be simulated closely. Such a machine made possible a more rapid and less expensive survey of the available construction materials and an analysis of the specific alloying reactions taking place in the clear-ance area.

A Smart Cell is a closed-type tip post-grouting device that is attached to the bottom of the steel reinforcement cage of a drilled shaft and is used to enhance performance and to reduce uncertainty thereof. Control of the grout is maintained within the device during injection and a uniform stress is imparted across entire base area simultaneously, inducing a pre-mobilization load into the shaft as well as the soil. This paper describes the construction and tip post-grouting of drilled shafts from two bridge projects in the Santa Cruz, Bolivia region along the Paraí River. During the grouting process at each project site, there were noticeable differences in the grouting pressures achieved and responses observed, even within short distances between shafts. For this project, the greater benefit of using the Smart Cells was the reduction of risk and uncertainty of performance due to the highly variable soil conditions. Ultimately, since the response of each shaft was observed during grouting and because a “minimum” value of shaft resistance (i.e., pre-mobilization of load) was measured, there is a greater reliability with the anticipated performance of the shafts when axial loading is eventually applied.

Based on time series method and multivariate linear regression method, the simulation model with the theory and idea of system simulation is firstly established. And this forecasting system realizes visual operation under the environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK. So this article tries a new way for further exploring petroleum price’s running law and guiding its forecasting practice. Due to the high level of competition in tooling sector, a necessity to increase the level of processes and assets management has initiated. Based on the World Class Manufacturing methodology, applied mainly in serial production industries, we have challenged ourselves to adapt the main concepts and implement them in a tooling company. After one work year, we could notice 29% productivity improvement in the bottleneck process, 25% cost reduction in outsourcing, standardization of the processes, 8% reduction in direct labor. Consequently, it was possible to implement a financial reserve and a long term planning cash flow.

"The most widely used method for predicting the onset of continuous caving is Laubscher’s caving chart. A detailed examination of this method was undertaken which concluded that it had limitations which may impact on results, particularly when dealing with stronger rock masses that are outside current experience. These limitations relate to inadequate guidelines for adjustment factors to rock mass rating (RMR), concerns about the position on the chart of critical case history data, undocumented changes to the method and an inadequate number of data points to be confident of stability boundaries.A review was undertaken on the application and reliability of a numerical method of assessing cavability. The review highlighted a number of issues, which at this stage, make numerical continuum methods problematic for predicting cavability. This is in particular reference to sensitivity to input parameters that are difficult to determine accurately and mesh dependency.An extended version of the Mathews method for open stope design was developed as an alternative method of predicting the onset of continuous caving. A number of caving case histories were collected and analyzed and a caving boundary delineated statistically on the Mathews stability graph. The definition of the caving boundary was aided by the existence of a large and wide-ranging stability database from non-caving mines. A caving rate model was extrapolated from the extended Mathews stability graph but could only be partially validated due to a lack of reliable data."

Mr Janisch' s comment' in the August issue on Dick Stacey's remarks about safety factors indeed requires wider debate. The example he quoted to illustrate the successful application of the safety factor concept in coal mining, namely the Salamon formula, is to my knowledge the only recognized application of that concept. Not only that, but that particular formula should be used only for what it was intended, namely to prevent major disasters. It was never intended to indicate long-term pillar stability, and it should not be used for that.

Magnesium alloy AM50 is of interest to automotive cradle application because of it excellent castability and good ductility. In this work, microstructure and mechanical properties of both low pressure die cast (LPDC) and high pressure die cast (HPDC) AM50 test bars are characterized. Microstructure was examined using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Phase identifications were performed using energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS) and TEM diffraction. It has been found that LPDC produces much coarser microstructure than HPDC. At the same time, the HPDC samples are more heterogeneous in microstructure and composition close to grain boundaries. Particles with various dimensions and morphologies of two different intermetallic phases, Mg17A112 and A18Mn5, were found in all the samples. Mechanical tests were performed under conditions similar to those related to an engine cradle application. LPDC samples show lower strength but better creep resistance than HPDC mainly due to the difference in grain sizes and grain boundary microstructure between LPDC and HPDC. Creep curves are well described by the empirical Andrade equation. Tensile-compressive yield and creep asymmetries were found in AM50, i.e. better deformation resistance in tension than in compression. The average yield asymmetry ratio for all the samples is 0.87. Microstructural examinations on the samples tested in tension, compression and creep showed that the deformation mechanisms in AM50 were slip plus twining at temperatures up to 125°C. The examinations indicate the important role of twining in the asymmetry phenomenon. The creep results indicate that dynamic precipitation of the Mg17A112 phase during testing is not the mechanism directly responsible for the creep asymmetry in AM50.

Nevsun Resources Ltd. Bisha Mine Project is a gold and base metal development project in the Gash Barka region of west-central Eritrea. The project has the potential to be one of the largest industrial developments in the country, and Eritreans have no experience in modern mining. Nevsun recognized early that the success of the Bisha Project would require meaningful consultation and engagement with all levels of Eritrean society. Meaningful engagement required not only full disclosure, but also capacity building from government officials at all levels to other stakeholders who live in the nearby communities. This paper describes the approach used to develop capacity and to help introduce a modern mining culture in a country without previous experience in mining.

Unfortunate occurrences resulting in injuries, loss of life, and destruction of property by explosion, fire, and other mishaps during shaft sinking in the past few years have focused the attention of the Bureau of Mines on the need for safety standards for such operations. Several States have some rules and regulations applicable to local conditions, and several Bureau publications (including some now out of print) cover the hazards that may be encountered in shaft sinking. Certain requirements of the Federal Mine Safety Code and Federal Coal Mine Safety Act may be applied, but there are no definite, uniform standards that will guide those desiring to sink a shaft safely and bring about uniform safety inspections.

High-Mg-content concentrates are usually treated in Jinchuan flash smelting Furnace. Because the viscosities of high-Mg-content slag is very high, the operation of flash smelting becomes very difficult. To solve this problem, the viscosities of the semi-synthesized FeO-MgO-Si02 slag of different compositions were measured. The results showed that when in the slag the weight percentage of MgO [m(Mgo)] is 6-10%, the ratio of the weight percentage of iron to that of Si02, m(Fe)/m(SiO2) is 1.1-1.4 and the temperatures are within 1473?1773K, the slag viscosities increased with the increase of m(Mgo) and m(Fe)/m(sio,). When m(Mgo)<6%, the smelting temperature should be controlled at I 300°C in order to to keep the smooth operation. When m(Mgo» 10%, the temperature should be kept above 1633K. When the content of MgO is higher, a lower viscosity slag ean be produced by decreasing the ratio of m(Fe)/m(sio,). The appropriate ratio of m(Fe)/m(sio,) for Jinchuan flash smelting furnace is about 1.2.

En este sentido, el texto señala la valoración de depósitos masivos de mineral a partir de la técnica del "Krigeage", la cual determina un estado lineal óptimo y calcula no solo el error cometido en la estimación, sino minimiza el error estimado. Asimismo, para lograr la aplicación del marco teórico señalado, se describe un sistema de programas compuesto de rutinas en Algol-W y Fortran IV, desarrollándose una interacción entre ellas.
