The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) is improving the sewer system in the Natomas area of Sacramento, CA. The Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) system is an ongoing series of tunnel pipeline projects that will provide sewer conveyance for all residents of northeast Sacramento County to the New Natomas Pumping Station, located North of downtown Sacramento, also in the city of Sacramento limits. The New Natomas Pumping Station then carries wastewater flowsto the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove via the existing Lower Northwest Interceptor. The Joint Venture of Traylor Brothers, inc. and J.F. Shea (TSJV) were awarded the UNWI 1&2 project in late September, 2007. The planned 5.8 km (3.65 mile) construction route for UNWI 1&2 begins at the New Natomas Pump Station and runs north along the East Drainage Canal to the begin-ning of UNWI 3&4 at Bridgecross Drive. UNWI 1&2 includes approximately 5.8 km (19,240 feet) of 3.65 m (144 inch) inside diameter pipe using Earth Pressure Balance Tunneling Methods. The project also includes 16.76 m (55 feet) of 3.04 m (120-inch) diameter interceptor pipeline, twenty three access manholes spaced approximately 305 m (1,000 feet) apart along the alignment, a 2.13 m (84-inch) by 3.65 m (144-inch) transition structure, a 3.65 m (144-inch) by 3.04 m (120-inch) transition structure, and the connection of three existing sanitary sewer lines to the interceptor.

The paper presents the development of an integrated computer aided design and planning of open cast mining, with the use of object-oriented modelling and geoinformation technologies, on the example of interaction of the subsystems on planning optimisation and freight traffics.

When it comes to sampling theory, a bad sampler is a bad sampler, no matter what, and a sampler is either bad or good. It also is of critical economic importance to tell and understand the difference, especially in a metallurgical plant. In this paper, the grand principles of Sampling Theory are first recalled, then the most popular types of sample cutters for plants are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the industry has a lot of progresses to make in that direction, although improvements usually pay for themselves very quickly.

The rockfall hazard is the major contributing agency to fatal accidents in South African platinum mining operations. The majority of these accidents occur in close proximity to the working stope face. The collapse of fractured or blocky ground between individual temporary support units or the closest permanent support line to the stope face has not yet been adequately addressed. A large-scale stope support system testing facility funded by the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC), has been designed and constructed to test support systems and stimulate innovative thinking by mining personnel, support manufacturers and suppliers by providing a facility where the interaction of stope support systems, a rigid stope face and a discontinuous hangingwall beam can be observed during quasi-static and dynamic conditions. Tests have been carried out on various types of stope support systems, focusing on the temporary support systems used in the immediate stope face area. The interlinking of the temporary support units with mesh or safety netting has been explored in the prevention of falls of ground between support units during gravity driven falls of ground. These tests illustrate the facility?s ability to be used to stimulate innovative thinking and provide a testing ground for the development of temporary support systems in order to reduce the risk off all of ground injury to mining personnel at the stope face.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated on a daily basis to image mining-induced changes to the overburden above a longwall mine. The hypothesis was that a coherent redistribution of seismic velocity, due to the development of high-stress zones, could be imaged at the mine scale. Seam depth was 360 m and source location depth varied from 100 to 1000 m. Sixteen geophones were distributed over a 600 by 600 m square area on the surface above the mine. More than 12,500 events were recorded over an 18 day period. The recorded seismicity provided input for the local-earthquake tomography code, SIMULPS. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated well with high abutment stresses. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated. These results indicate that velocity tomography can be used to provide a better understanding of temporal changes within a rock mass, and can potentially be used to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to unanticipated ground failures.

Efficacy of Enhanced Gravity Separator in Processing Indian Iron Ore Slime The slime sample was subjected to concentration using Falcon concentrator for their enrichment. The effects of three important variables, eg bowl rotation frequency, back water flow rate and per cent solid were studied on the process performance. Increasing the rotation of the Falcon bowl, enable more material to the underflow by increasing the yield, whereas, the iron content decreases steadily with increasing the rotation of the bowl. The increase in the back water flow effectively removes the clay materials from the underflow at the expense of the yield. Similarly, increasing the per cent solid concentration in the feed produces a better product both in terms of yield and Fe content. Results show that EGS/Falcon can be used for processing Indian iron ore slime and producing pellet grade concentrate.

The coastal dune cordon of northern KwaZulu-Natal is among the highest in the world reaching heights in excess of 180 m and up to 2 km in width. It comprises a complex system of Quaternary stacked dunes of various geomorphologies, types and ages (Sudan, 1999; Maud and Botha, 2002;Ware et al., 2001; Ware, 2003). The dunes contain economic heavy minerals that have been exploited for the last two and a half decades. Dune units have recently been defined based on sand composition and texture(Sudan, 1999; Ware, 2003). Despite this, little work has been undertaken on the clay-fraction (< 2 um). This work documents the weathering of dunes to form clays. From the documented clay assemblages and relative abundances, a simplified weathering sequence with increasing maturity can be summarized as follows: primary minerals ? illite + vermiculite ?illite +interstratifications ?illite + montmorillonite ?halloysite + interstratifications + kaolinite ?kaolinite. The dominant controlling factors in determining clay assemblages is pH and leaching conditions. The presence of carbonates results in an alkaline pH and high concentrations of Ca2+and Mg2+which favours the formation of montmorillonite and vermiculite. However, vermiculite tends to form under slightly acidic conditions and is indicative of palaeosols where organic acids produce localized acidic pH’s. In contrast to this, kaolinite will only form and concentrate when carbonates have been leached. Kaolinite dominated samples are considered very mature under current climatic conditions(Chamley, 1989). Halloysite represents a transitional phase between montmorillonite and kaolinite (Herbillon et al., 1981). Ion mobility and evacuation is also critical in determining clay assemblages. Past work and field studies indicate that the dune cordon acts as an open system, resulting in carbonates and mobile ions being readily leached and lost from the system. However, when prolonged weathering has caused an accumulation of fine-grained material, the permeability decreases substantially whereby mobile cations and silica cannot be readily evacuated. This results in the formation of montmorillonite rather than kaolinite, even when carbonates have been leached. Illite (sericite) is considered to alter directly from feldspars. However, dune stacking and geometries, vegetation, water fluxes, reworking and erosion complicates this sequence.

The operation of electric face equipment in underground coal mines has proven to be extremely hazardous to mining personnel, including equipment operators and others working in the vicinity of active equipment. Recent industrial engineering studies* of accidents and fatalities indicate that a major contributor to this hazardous situation is noncompliance with modern principles of human engineering, particularly lack of standardization of control configurations. Control configurations differ not only among different machine types, but also among the same machine types produced by different manufacturers. This lack of standardization can produce a high incidence of error in the operation of electric face equipment, thus creating a potential source of accidents. Other examples of non-compliance with human engineering principles are the widespread use of identical black, round control knobs (regardless of the function being performed), and the inappropriate location, spacing, and labeling of controls. Any or all of these factors may place the operator in a "negative transfer" situation, which means that control manipulations appropriate for one type of machine are different from (or even the reverse of) the control movements required to produce the same effect on other machine types. This situation increases the accident potential to the operator, as well as to others in the vicinity. Accident potential is further increased by circumstances which do not allow for large error tolerance-specifically, emergency procedures. Reports of accident statistics cite operator inexperience as a primary cause of most accidents involving underground electric face equipment. Several factors contribute to operator inexperience, including: 1. High personnel turnover 2. Employee absenteeism 3. Current union practice of bidding for jobs.

Mining deep orebodies is increasingly becoming the norm as the ‘easy’ orebodies are depleted. Deep ore mining requires significant ventilation and cooling infrastructure to not only meet regulatory requirements for air quality but also to achieve acceptable workplace temperatures with the higher strata rock temperatures and increased auto-compression. At the same time, advances in battery equipment technology are turning the possibility of a battery powered fleet into reality. The switch from a diesel fleet to a battery powered fleet offers several positive opportunities for the design and operation of a deep mine.The potential to reduce ventilation and cooling requirements due to battery powered equipment results in significant cost savings for mine development and infrastructure. Battery powered fleets are not subject to the same dilution requirements associated with diesel fleets thus allowing lower ventilation rates. At the low ventilation volumes possible with a battery powered fleet, surface refrigeration plants are limited with respect to the amount of cooling that can be delivered to the workface. Considerations for calculating the optimum air flow and cooling requirements are presented. Considerations for locating the refrigeration plant are also discussed. Application of a magnetic field was shown to be effective in controlling iron losses in pilot-scale cationic silica flotation in the processing of magnetic taconite concentrates. The design of a magnetic field distribution device and batch flotation test results using a 1.42m3 (50 cu. ft.) WEMCO cell are reported. Major losses of iron units in froth products were in the -25µm (500 mesh) fraction, and the application of a magnetic field decreased the flotation of fine magnetite, thereby improving the selectivity of separation. The “as received” sample was sufficiently magnetized and no further benefit was gained by magnetizing treatment. Selectivity was somewhat adversely affected by demagnetizing the sample, though its effect was minimal due to the magnetic field. The device is simple in construction, low cost and may be installed readily in existing equipment.

On-the-job training (OJT) is a very common method of teaching job skills. Much of the training is done by experienced workers. This paper discusses small investments that can help improve the effectiveness of OJT. Effective OJT involves some structure and planning in the transfer of responsibility for task performance from the trainer to the novice. Assisting the OJT trainer could involve helping develop up-to-date job analyses and offering strategies for teaching and evaluating job skills. The scope of this paper addresses (1) organizational considerations supporting structured OJT, (2) general strategies for structuring OJT, (3) a typical approach for conducting OJT, (4) characteristics and duties of OJT trainers, and (5) limitations of OJT as a teaching method. Health, safety, and operational skills can be connected through training. Haul truck operator training is used to illustrate some of the concepts discussed in this paper.

In Switzerland two major railway systems as shown below in Figure 1 has recently been completed or is under construction: ¦Lötschberg, south of Bern which was commissioned in 2007 ¦Gotthard, south of Zurich which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016The aim is to increase the transport capacity of the railway system and to transfer more transport of goods to the railway by offering transport of trailers and lorries on the new railway systems. It will have a positive environmental impact but also improve the congested traffic situation of the highways in north-south directionThe Gotthard tunnel is totally 57 km (35 mile) long and the Lötschberg tunnel is 35 km (22 mile) long. Both tunnel systems consist of two parallel single track tunnels connected with cross tunnels at every 333 m (1 093 ft). Additionally there are cross-over tunnels and caverns for installations and operation. In the Lötschberg tunnel, the majority of the excavation has been by Drill & Blast and in Gotthard tunnel the major part is being excavated by TBM.

Enterprise Optimisation is a methodology for increasing the value of mining and mineral processing operations through better long-term planning decisions. It involves a combination of ten mechanisms which deal with decisions at different stages of the value chain. A decision made at any point in the chain potentially affects the decision for all other points in the chain. The key, therefore, is to optimise them simultaneously. The Enterprise Optimisation approach can be shown to produce increases of five per cent to 35 per cent or more in net present value (NPV), even when several optimisation methods have already been applied. This paper steps through an example case study, illustrating the effect of each mechanism and how they can work together to develop greatly improved results. This example results in a series of counter-intuitive outcomes, which challenges conventional management practices and typical organisational objectives based on organisational silos.

This expansion has been largely driven by changes in ?Political climate ?Fiscal and legal regimes ?Exploration approaches ?West African geology. Major regional mapping and geochemical surveys by the UNDP, and the BRGM in the late 1970s and early 1980s laid the foundation for the rapid development of mineral exploration and resources during the past decade. An additional driving impetus was the discovery by native artisanal miners of many significant new gold occurrences at Libiri, Essakan, Bouda and Tirahori, during the great droughts of the late seventies and early eighties.

Continuous mining machines are extensively used in the underground coal mining industry. These machines are typically remote-controlled, and severe injuries and fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by the machine. Proximity detection systems offer a means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and disabling machine motion. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)have developed the Intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system to provide enhanced protection while minimizing false alarms. The iPD system uses a set of pre-defined rules to determine which machine motions are safe and which would present a potential hazard, and automatically disables only the potentially hazardous motions. This system has been installed and tested on a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine at the NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health Research in Pittsburgh. Under laboratory conditions, the achievable accuracy and performance of the iPD system has been quantified with respect to a number of variables including position of the conveyor boom, presence of the machine?s trailing cable, and orientation of the miner-wearable component. This paper presents an initial investigation into the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts in a two dimensional, thin reef scenario. Deposits with gradational mineralized zones, in the perpendicular sense, are not as well served by the use of reef accumulation and thickness as deposits characterized by a sharp distinction between ore and waste rock. South African Bushveld Complex platinum deposits and Witwatersrand gold deposits are examples of this distinction. The calculation of an optimal mining cut is of paramount importance in the mining of Bushveld platinum. Two-dimensional kriging of a constant stoping width mining cut is an effective method for resource calculations once a cut is decided, but this begs the question of how to decide on the cut. Comparison of multiple cuts is used as a way of achieving this decision on many of Anglo Platinum’s operations. Although the kriging of each cut is valid in isolation, occasional negative values occur when incremental grades between overlapping cuts are calculated. Negative incremental grades cannot reflect reality. They are thought to be related to the inability of the method to include the strong continuity in the perpendicular direction demonstrated by the relevant variograms. Co-kriging of related variables has been investigated as a potential means tore impose this inherent order relationship. Various co-kriging options have been investigated. The method has been tested on a real data set from an established platinum operation. One of three types of anomaly has been investigated so far. The results show that co-kriging the mining cut grade as the primary variable, with just one secondary variable, the reef thickness, eliminates most occurrences. Severe anomalies remaining are arguably indicative of population mixing and might be more effectively treated by rezoning the data. Aim—To investigate the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts as a method for resolving anomalies in the estimation of such cuts on Bushveld platinum deposits, with applicability to other thin reef type deposits with a gradational not sharp cut-off between ore and waste in the direction perpendicular to the reef. "The El Mochito Mine located in Honduras, Central America, has produced lead, zinc and silver in concentrates since the 1950s. The paper discusses changes made in both lead and zinc circuits to reduce costs while maintaining production during the recent period of low metal prices.The intent of this paper is to show that sometimes thinking “outside the box” is beneficial for progress. Also, in striving for better metallurgical results we should not forget the basics of flotation. Sometimes the latest trends may not be applicable to the ore we are treating and may not meet the operating cost constraints.A major beneficial impact on El Mochito metallurgy was achieved when the overall grind was coarsened, eliminating the significant percentage of slimes. Switching from two parallel twostage grinding circuits to one circuit with three-stage series grinding has resulted in a significant reduction in power and steel consumption. With minor layout/reagent modifications, both lead and zinc circuits gained not only in retention time but as well in producing better grade products.Of course, the challenges are still there; they exist and only with the full support of operational data collection and metallurgical laboratory investigation success can come. That is why, we as professionals, can never stop in trying to make the most of what we have.INTRODUCTIONThe El Mochito Mine is owned by American Pacific Honduras S.A. de C.V. (AMPAC) a subsidiary of Breakwater Resources Ltd. Of Toronto, Canada. The mine is located in western Honduras, approximately 220 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Tegucigalpa and 90 kilometers south of the country’s second largest city, San Pedro Sula. The mine began operating in 1948 and to date has produced more than 19 million tonnes grading 240 g/t Ag, 3.5% Pb and 7.4% Zn. Production in 2005 was 700,190 tonnes grading 87 g/t Ag, 1.85% Pb and 6.61% Zn.Decreasing metal content in the ore followed by the lowest zinc price on the market in the last 15 years (see Figure 1) has reduced the cash flow and endangered to stop the operation."

Stmplified equations are developed for the flow of fluids in gas drive reservoirs in which the effects of gravity can be neglected. The results show that the pressure distribution is governed by a nonlinear heat flow type of equation, and the saturation distributions are related to the pressure by the same equations QS those developed by Muskat for the average pressure and saturations in gas drive reservoirs. Unrler certain conditions the equation for the pressure can be approximated by the linear form of the heat flow equatlon. This equation tk analogous to the equation for the pressure in single-phase compressible flow The analysis reveals that the equation for the pressure in n~ultiphase flows can be obtained directly from the equation for the pressure in slngle-phase flows by simply replacing the single-phase compressibility by the total compressibility and the single-phase mobility by the sum of the mobilities of all the fluids present. Perrine&apos;s method of pressure buildup analysis for multiphme flows is based on these same substitutions. Thus, the development presented in this paper constitutes a theoretical justification for Perrine&apos;s method of pressure buildup analysis. One of the most difficult problems associated with the production of oil is the determination of the flow of the fluids within the reservoirs. One purpose of this paper is to present the development of simplified equations for the flow in gas drive reservoirs. The other purpose is to present some of the needed theoretical foundation for the methods currently being used in the analysis of multiphase pressure buildup data. The analysis presented in this paper makes use of a partial linearization of the equations governing multiphase flows. It is felt that the process of linearizing or partially linearizing the nonlinear equations of multiphase flows can lead to useful results since this process has proved extremely valuable in the study of other fields of science and engineering where nonlinear equations are encountered. Pressure buildup data of shut-in wells have been used for many years to estimate the static reservoir pressure. These data have also been used in studying the aver- age permeability both away from and close to the well-bores. The majority of the buildup data are obtained from wells producing two or three fluids. As yet the theoretical foundations for the methods of buildup analysis used in connection with rnultiphase buildup data have not been established. A number of methods of analysis of pressure buildup data have been developed." Most of these methods apply only to single-phase flows, and almost all of the theoretical analysis is confined to single-phase flows. Perrine&apos; developed a method of analysis for rnultiphase flows from the method for single-phase flows of Miller, Dyes, and Hutchinson.&apos; He did this by simply replacing the single-phase compressibility by the multiphase compressibility and replacing the single-phase mobility by the sum of the mobilities of the fluids in the rnultiphase flows. Obviously, such a procedure lacks a certain amount of theoretical justification, and such practices can lead to erroneous results. Fortunately, Perrine&apos;s results have a theoretical justification, and this justification is presented in the following discussion. It is assumed that gravitational effects and the cornpressibility of the rock can be neglected. Under these assumptions the equations governing the simultaneous flow of gas, oil and water in porous media areo* The preceding equations can be expanded into the following expressions.

Fan performance graphs are generated by digital computer using two programs, RUN- FANS and FANPLOT. RUNFANS calculates fan performance data from stored specific-volume, specific-speed data for a given fan type with appropriate allowances for fan diameter, rotational speed and air density. FANPLOT accepts specifications for drawing the graph and accepts either user-supplied pressure-quantity data or RUNFANS- calculated data as input, Operational procedures for both programs are detailed and examples of their interactive query routines are included. Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.
