A constante busca por aumento de produtividade aliada à redução de custos com paradas para manutenção nos altos-fornos tem exigido incessantes evoluções tecnológicas em seus equipamentos. As ventaneiras são equipamentos de vital importância para o processo de redução do minério de ferro, e um importante parâmetro para um bom desempenho em processo é seu projeto de refrigeração. Tendo em vista que a otimização da refrigeração pode aumentar a vida do equipamento e reduzir custos com manutenções, o presente trabalho apresentará um estudo de evolução no projeto de refrigeração de ventaneiras com câmaras de refrigeração independente no mesmo corpo (câmaras interna e externa). Esta evolução tem como objetivo principal permitir a utilização da câmara interna mesmo após a falha da câmara externa, devido a sua refrigeração independente e otimizada, com aumento na vida útil do equipamento. A comparação destes projetos será feita utilizando ferramentas de simulação computacional CFD e os resultados serão apresentados na conclusão do trabalho.

During the response to the Moura No 4 disaster, use was made of the New South Wales Mines Rescue Service’s ‘Mineshield’ inertisation equipment. The equipment had to be transported from Newcastle, approximately 1400 kms, and the liquid nitrogen a similar distance. The time taken, and therefore availability of the liquid nitrogen, became a significant problem. Operational issues were also experienced during use. Typically the liquid nitrogen is converted to a gas (vaporised) before being injected into the mine. However, as the propane gas tanker used for the vapourising unit was delayed, an attempt was made to inject the liquid nitrogen directly down uncased boreholes. This proved unsuccessful.Following the Moura No 4 disaster and the Moura No 2 disaster, recommendations were made relating to having inertisation capacity for the Queensland coal mining industry. Today the Queensland industry has multiple options available for inertisation, including the high-volume GAG and smaller volume units such as boilers and membrane separation units. Although it ultimately aided re-entry into Moura No 4, most likely due to the issues associated with supply to Central Queensland, liquid nitrogen has not found favour within the Queensland industry as an inertisation tool.Coregas has commissioned an air separation plant in Mackay, improving the availability of liquid nitrogen to Central Queensland. Based on the availability of this nitrogen, recent sealing operations at Kestrel have trialled using liquid nitrogen and associated vapourising units. In the summer of 1937 the authors began a series of time studies of the various processes employed in the' production of crushed stone. These studies, made at quarries scattered over the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States, have not been completed, but to make results available to the industry as early as possible it was decided to publish summaries of the studies made to January 1, 1939, as a series of progress reports. The first of these reports dealt with power-shovel loading and was issued as Report of Investigations 3461 in September 1939. The present circular discusses analyses of the time Studies of the haulage systems at the same quarries. OBJECT OF STUDY The pressure of business problems frequently requires the entire atten¬tion of quarry management and in consequence internal plant economies often are neglected, Also, operating officials absorbed in their local problems are prone to overlook possible economies that would attract attention immediately were they critically examining another plant. The authors felt that similar studies of many plants by impartial engineers would disclose possibilities for cost reduction or greater efficiency in internal plant processes.

The attempt has been made to manufacture high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels by pressurized electro-slag remelting furnace with maximum nitrogen pressure of 7MPa. To obtain high nitrogen content in steels, the compound electrodes with different nitrogen sources (FeCrN, Si3N4) were prepared. Using the Si3N4 as the nitrogen alloying source, the silicon contents in ingots were prone to be out of the specification range, and the electric current fluctuated greatly and the surface qualities of the ingots were poor. The surface qualities of the ingots were improved using FeCrN as nitrogen alloying source. The sound and compact macrostructure ingot with the maximum nitrogen above 1.0wt% could be obtained. A series of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels have been successfully developed by this method. The mechanical and pitting corrosion resistance properties of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels were investigated. The results show that the steels exhibit excellent mechanical and pitting corrosion resistance properties.

Dimension stone is a natural stone (granite, marble, limestone, sandstone and slate) that can be quarried, cut and shaped to conform to acceptable industry standards for size, consistency and durability. There are numerous outlets for the finished product in exterior and interior architectural and design applications. A continued growth market is with residential usage— particularly in new, upscale construction. This has become a competitive market between domestic producers and lower cost imported products. These imported products have become available at many of the building supply retail outlets and have increased the use of stone in residential construction and renovation. The traditional architectural application of dimension stone is tied to commercial and institutional building construction trends and market. There has been a noticeable increased usage of stone in the Sun Belt. This stone is usually supplied by local fabricating shops. It is used in the exterior and interior of shopping malls. This market generally uses local stone sources. It has increased the demand for sandstone, limestone and quartzite in this region of the country.

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

The control of flotation plants is by no means trivial. Flotation is one of the most interactive minerals? processing operations. The interactive nature of flotation circuits results in oscillations of levels and hence of grades and recoveries. Also, poor level setpoint tracking and disturbances have negative influences on grades and recoveries. The result is an unstable plant with limited scope for optimization. An advanced controller, FloatStarTM, has been developed to provide tight control and to reduce the amount of disturbances in flotation levels. It has been shown on a number of plants that the system results in faster and better setpoint tracking, better regulatory control and faster settling times after start-ups and disturbances. The successful stabilization provided by FloatStar has made it easier to investigate the area of optimization on flotation circuits. Mintek has identified the need for a more meaningful set of setpoints or aeration rates to use as a basis for control than levels and have advocated flow control by looking after residence times. When the feed conditions change, the ideal solution would be an algorithm or strategy that finds the new optimum conditions rather than just having an unguided hunt from the previous point. A multivariable flow-optimizing algorithm, a new module in FloatStar, has been developed to calculate optimum level setpoints and/or aeration rates that will aim to optimize the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit. Near-field blast vibration response of restrained pipelines either buried or exposed was studied during rock excavations at sensitive locations for Stage-II (4x500 MW) commissioning work in a super thermal powerplant of the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) of India. The existing running plant of capacity 1000 MW has many important installations including pipelines of varying diameters. These pipelines were very close to the blasting locations (mostly within 12m). Blast optimization and consequent monitoring of vibrations were carried out simultaneously for more than 250 experimental blasts conducted by the authors. This paper emphasized, particularly, on the safety of pipelines and their responses due to repeated blasting impacts. A few guidelines supported by theoretical derivations are provided for futuristic research.

"In mechanized mining, poor equipment efficiency (availability, utilization, productivity, and quality) can endanger the success of the operation. This case study will show how an initiative to improve equipment performance developed into a comprehensive turnaround plan for the mine that placed it in the forefront of performance achievement.As part of a company-wide review process, poor overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) was identified as a major reason for the mine not achieving its targets. A project to improve the OEE identified eight improvement areas (elements) that contributed significantly to the poor performances. Measurement metrics were determined for these elements, followed by determination of baseline and target (improved) key performance indicators (KPIs). Cost savings associated with the improved efficiencies were calculated and tracked throughout the project. The mine team determined the specific actions required to achieve the target KPI in each element. These were individually developed and managed like mini-projectswith allocated responsibilities for delivery. The paper will indicate how this OEE improvement initiative triggered an improvement in almost all sections of the mine. Soon after launch, the initiative gathered momentum as the KPIs starting to improve. A visible tracking system exists at the mine and each employee can see the improvements and feel the success. The original eight elements were extended by five more, and the mini-projects grew as participants saw the success of the initiative.This paper concludes that through management and worker involvement, visible measurement and controls, and carefully chosen improvement elements, the mine was turned around. It is now achieving and exceeding its targets, and employee relations and motivation as well as safety have improved considerably. All of these achievements are reflected in the bottom line."

The stringent marketing specifications included in coal contracts mean that coal producers must supply cleaner and more consistent coal than may have been formerly required. Geostatistics has the potential to aid in the accurate estimation of the washability characteristics of coal. A prediction method, the Kriged Service Variable Approach has been developed.A Computer Aided Drafting and Design system has proved useful in the development and application of the approach. The geostatistical approach has been tested against coal geological and borehole data and applications discussed.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (KO88) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron- and steelmaking and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

Selection of a suitable coal or coals for the manufacture of coke of desired quality with due consideration of the purpose for which the coke is intended requires careful thought, and often it will pay to go to consider able expense in testing such coals as may be available. In general it will always be possible to obtain a satisfactory coal or blend of coals for the particular purpose in view, but in some places the cost of transportation would be prohibitive. It may then be necessary to consider a coal or coals inferior in grade, rank, or both. At times, in fact, only one inferior coal may be available, when the problem becomes mainly one of selecting equipment and operating conditions best adapted to that coal, keeping in mind that the end product of the plant must compete with the imported product in the market the plant will serve. This applies particularly to new projects for which it is necessary to build a plant and start with a clean slate, so to speak. However, it will pay every coke-plant manager to employ a force to continually test the coals used and the coke produced to make sure that the quality is not changing appreciably. Furthermore, if the supply of coals used becomes exhausted it will be necessary to use other coals. Continual testing is particularly necessary at plants using borderline coals or blends, where slight changes in the composition or in operation of the ovens may render them dangerously expanding. In this connection it should be stated that control in the newer coke plants is considerably easier than for those built a decade or so ago, consequently in the new ovens a given operating program can be maintained more precisely. This point is important, because one of the main requirements of the coke user is uniformity in both physical and chemical characteristics. For example, any appreciable changes in the quality of coke delivered to the blast?-furnace operator will involve changes in operation if the best results are to be obtained. Such changes are expensive usually they take considerable time and involve production of inferior iron.

Gas and water permeabilities of a large number of samples from the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas coals were measured at various overburden and mean flow pressures. A wide variation in the air and water permeabilities was obtained for each type of coal. Overburden pressure has the most significant effect on the single-phase permeability. Considerable hysteretic effect was observed for both air and water permeabilities. Gas permeabilities are affected to a lesser degree by mean flow pressures above atmospheric. However, at subatmospheric mean pressures, appreciable increase in permeability occurs for low permeability samples. Air and water relative permeabilities were also measured for numerous samples of Pittsburgh and Pocahontas coals. Tests were performed under steady-state conditions for both drainage and imbibition cycles. Results indicate that the flow of gas is greatly reduced during the latter process, whereas it is largely undiminished over a wide water-saturation range during drainage. It is also shown that imbibition saturation distributions obtained from liquid-water imbibition as opposed to water-vapor adsorption produce gas permeability curves of radically different character. The effective permeabilities to both gas and water were significantly reduced with the application of overburden pressures in the range of 0 to 1,000 psig, but the general shapes of the relative permeability curves remained the same.

Shield recovery in a longwall move is normally conducted from tailgate to headgate. However, if the face is wide and the immediate roof is weak, difficult conditions with considerable roof sag, excessive shield load, and local roof falls could occur as the shield recovery proceeds to the middle of the face, causing delays in shield recovery. The situation could be aggravated when a pre-driven longwall recovery room is employed. Alternatively, a bi-directional approach for shield recovery, i.e. shield recovery starting from the middle of the face towards both tailgate and headgate, can alleviate the roof sag significantly by quickly withdrawing the shields towards the lower abutment pressure zones at the headgate and tailgate sides. In this case, the bi-directional shield recovery approach was used in a longwall move for a 1450 ft wide face under weak roof conditions. Shields were successfully withdrawn within five days without experiencing significant roof sag. The time-dependent roof-to-floor convergence, shield pressure, and roof conditions were monitored during shield recovery. 3-D finite element modeling was conducted prior to longwall move to evaluate the difference between a uni-directional and a bi-directional shield recovery during a longwall face move. Vertical stress, yield zone in and around the recovery room, load on the shields, and convergence at the center of the shield canopy were obtained from computer modeling, and compared with the data from field monitoring. Finally, the advantages of the bi-directional shield recovery are discussed.

Slope stability at the proposed mine in Rajasthan was analysed in two dimensions using a finite difference code. The properties of the rock material were determined in the laboratory and subsequently modified to approximate those of the in situ rock mass. Geotechnical mapping was undertaken to determine the critical orientation of structural discontinuities. The results of the work indicated that an open pit 148 m in depth would be stable with overall slope angles of 60 degrees

O tráfego rodoviário de cargas está em franco crescimento, se diversificando nas rodovias e também nos grandes centros urbanos. O uso de novos implementos (carretas maiores e com maior capacidade de carga) resulta no travamento das vias urbanas, causando grandes transtornos à população. Em muitas cidades, o tráfego exige um novo planejamento urbano e construção de vias alternativas. Em Volta Redonda, RJ, estão sendo desenvolvidos projetos com alternativas de fluxos rodoviários, que buscam soluções para o transporte coletivo, bem como, para fluxo de veículos pequenos, médios e de cargas da cidade. O fluxo de caminhões que abastecem e escoam os produtos da CSN - Usina Presidente Vargas, tendem a crescer com o aumento de produtividade da planta de Cimentos e startup da planta de Aços Longos, com início de suas operações em Janeiro/14. Alternativas como a intensificação do uso de ferrovia são foco do trabalho da área de logística da CSN, porém não eliminam o uso do modal rodoviário.

Cristais da família cristalográfica do sal de Tutton A2B(XO4)2.6H2O, A=K, NH4, Rb, Cs, Tl, B=Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, V, Cr, X=S e Se tem sido investigados por diversas técnicas experimentais com o objetivo de compreender suas propriedades físicas e potenciais aplicações tecnológicas. Investigações sobre o comportamento estrutural têm sido realizadas por difração de raios-x a fim de compreender suas propriedades estruturais, principalmente a distorção Jahn-Teller presentes nos cristais com cromo e cobre. Soluções sólidas destes sais na forma A2B'xB”(1-x)- (SO4)2.6H2O, têm sido relativamente pouco investigadas embora possam apresentar distorção Jahn-Teller. A estrutura dos cristais desta série à temperatura ambiente é monoclínica, grupo espacial P21/a com duas moléculas por célula unitária. Bons monocristais da série (NH4)2NixCu(1-x)(SO4)2.6H2O com 0
