With an increase of mining depth, a series of mining-induced hazards such as rockburst, coal and gas outburst, roof collapse, and water burst are getting more serious and more frequent. The intrinsic mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards is the damage and unstable failure of rockmass or coal seam. The most distinct difference between deep and shallow levels is the so-called three ‘high’ (H3) conditions, i.e. high geo-stress, high fluid pressure and high geo-temperature. Therefore, the response of rock or coal to the deep mining operation is a phenomenon involving thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) processes. Most importantly, mining excavation may vary the rock stress condition greatly, which may be a key factor to trigger the mining-induced hazards such as rockburst. In this regard, it is of great significance to clarify the damage and failure mechanism of rock and coal under coupled THM conditions, in order to clarify the rock failure mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards. Thereafter, the mining-induced hazards cannot be predicted with confidence by considering each process independently. Of course, the requirement to include coupling of these processes depends on the specifics of the mining-induced hazards under consideration. For example, the water inrush is considered as a coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) process, in which the unstable failure of rockmass occurs under the combined contribution of geo-stress and water pressure. As for the coal mining at depth, in addition to high geo-stress and gas pressure in coal seam, the high geo-thermal condition that may greatly change the adsorption / desorption of gas and gas flow should be taken into account. Firstly, a general-purpose mathematical model for rock damage and failure process under coupled THM conditions is formulated based on damage mechanics principle, and it is solved by finite element method (FEM). In this model, the deformation and damage of rock, fluid flow and thermal transfer in rock would interact with each other, one process affects and initiation and progress of another. Then, the model is used to predict the mining-induced water outburst, where it is simulated as coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) problems. Based on the numerical simulation, the dimension of water-proof pillar is designed. Finally, the gas drainage from deep coal seam is numerically evaluated, where the coupled coal-gas interaction considering the effect of gas adsorption/desorption, gas flow in coal seam and geo-stress and geotemperature, is comprehensively taken into account. The proposed model could be used for clarifying the mechanism of mining-induced hazards in deep-level mining.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of potash from 68 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries (MEC's) containing, at the demonstrated resource level, approximately 11.7 billion metric tons (mt) of potash in assay terms of contained K2O; K2O as used by industry as a standard of comparison for the different forms of potash. These resources include almost 190 million mt in the United States, 9.63 billion mt in Canada, approximately 430 million mt in Western Europe (France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom), 1.24 billion mt in the Middle East (Israel and Jordan) and over 220 million mt in other countries (Brazil, Chile, and the Congo). This analysis his determined that future production of potash in MEC?s will most likely continue to be from the large resources associated with producing operations in Canada. Based solely on the demonstrated resources included in this study, potash mining in the United States would decline while overseas production from MEC's can continue into the next century at near current production levels. However, timely development of new or inferred resources would offset any such decline. Producing mines in Canada have the resources to increase and maintain increased production well into the next century. For U.S. potash users, Canada is a long-term stable and secure source.

This paper describes a detailed geostatistical study of producing copper orebodies at Mount Isa Mines Limited in Queensland, Australia. As a result of this work, kriging has been adopted for grade estimation for final stope design at Isa Mine. Extensive variogram and back analysis studies indicate that one relative variogram model can be used to give optimal kriged grade estimates from production sampling throughout the 100 million tonne copper orebody complex. The kriging method replaces a computer technique used at [sa Mine based on inverse distance weighting using parameters chosen from experience.Comparative stope designs based on 10 million tonnes of ore indicate a 16% increase in minable ore tonnage at a grade well above the cut-off, as a result of the geostatistical work.Although this paper is written as a practical description with simple explanations of geostatistical concepts, the theory and use of relative variograms has been expanded. A possible link is suggested between relative variograms and first order kinetics of natural mineral concentration processes.

A fase sigma () é conhecida por afetar negativamente as propriedades mecânicas e a resistência à corrosão dos aços inoxidáveis duplex (AIDs). Dessa forma, a exposição da liga a temperaturas elevadas durante os processos de produção, soldagem ou tratamentos térmicos devem ser realizadas de maneira cautelosa a fim de se evitar a precipitação da mesma. Assim sendo, modelos adequados para predizer a precipitação da fase são ferramentas muito úteis. Entre os numerosos modelos, a relação de Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) é um dos modelos mais comumente utilizadas para descrever a cinética das transformações isotérmicas de fases em muitos sistemas regidos pelos mecanismos de nucleação e crescimento. Diante disso, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um estudo cinético baseado na aplicação do modelo JMAK, da precipitação da fase em um AID UNS S31803 envelhecido isotermicamente nas temperaturas de 750ºC, 800ºC e 850ºC. Concluiu-se que a cinética de precipitação da fase na liga obedeceu ao modelo JMAK, pois foi obtida uma boa correlação entre dados experimentais e os simulados. Observou-se que o aumento da temperatura de envelhecimento de 750ºC para 850°C acelerou a cinética de precipitação de A energia de ativação determinada (182,4 kJ/mol) para precipitação da fase neste sistema, sugere que a difusão do Cr na ferrita seja o principal mecanismo envolvido na formação dessa fase.

"A new process for treating scheelite for the production of tungstic tri-oxide is described. The novelty of the process resides in that an ion-ex-changer is used to convert sodium tungstate to either ammonium tung-state or tungstic acid.The process consists of a conventional hydrochloric acid leach of the scheelite concentrate, and the dissolution of the impure tungstic acid thus produced with sodium hydroxide at pH 8. The sodium tungstate solution is clarified and passed through a column of Dowex 50Wx8 ion-ex-change resin to exchange the sodium ions for either hydrogen or ammonium ions, both being suitable. The tungsten-bearing column effluent is evaporated to crystallize the tungsten as ammonium tungstate; the crystals are washed with nitric acid and water and decomposed by heat to pro-duce tungstic trioxide of high purity.Ninety-six per cent of the tungsten in the concentrate may be re-covered as tungs tic trioxide (W03), and the reagents consumed are 0.7 g HCl, 0.41 g NaOH and either 1.73 g NH.Cl or 225 g HCl per gram of tungsten."

Rock samples were taken, away from zones of mineralization , from seven sections of five rhyolitic zones as define d by Spence (l967) in the Noranda area. The purpose of the investigation was to test whether there were intrinsic differences between the zones which would differentiate between non-productive zones and productive zones. For the elements sought (major elements, Cu , Pb , Zn and S) , no clear chemical difference between the zones was found. Thus, identification of a favour able zone from the over -all composition of the zone does not appear promising. Within sampled sections, there is no clear gradual compositional change up through the sections. A capping of highly siliceous massive rhyolite is present in five of the sections sampled. A layer of relatively basic material occurs near the base of individual units. The third (mine zone) and later zones contain abundant pyroclastic material, where as the non-productive zones do not.

The national mine-safety demonstration at Pittsburgh, Pa., was projected and undertaken in the hope that it would aid the increase of safety in the mining industry. That the national mine-safety demonstration was warranted and has served a useful purpose was evidenced by the attendance, not only at the public demonstration in Forbes Field, but also at the more special exhibit of the work of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds and at the experimsntal. mine. Nearly 2,000 persons witnessed the demonstrations and exhibits of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds on the morning of October 30, 1911. The spectators were all mine operators, miners, or persons interested in mining, and represented operations in all parts of the United States. Nearly 1,200 of these persons visited the bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton to witness ~th~explosion of coal dust. Had the weather, which was exceptionally inclement, been more favorable, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. At the public demonstration in Forbes Field, which· was witnessed by President Taft, from 12,000 to 15,000 persons, chiefly mining men, were present and attested their interest and enthusiasm in the minesafety exhibits by remaining throughout the proceedings, regardless of the rain which fell all the morning .. Sincethis demonstration, the organization of first-aid corps and of rescue corps has been undertaken at mines where there had previously been no such organizations. The bureau has received letters of commendation attesting the value of the demonstration in drawing· attention to the dangers and to possible means of greater safety in mining. Many of these letters have urged that the results of the demonstration be published for the guidance and instruction of those who were present. In response to these reauests the following account of the mine- BlIIeLY demonstration lias been prepared. IIi its preparation various division and section chiefs of the Bureau of Mines have cooperated. The authors acknowledge the assistance they have received from those section chiefs and other members of the bureau who contributed detailed descriptions of apparatus exhibited at the demonstration or of investigations represented.

Rockburst prediction is crucial in deep hard rock mines and tunnels to make safer working conditions. Due to the complex interaction of many factors involved in rockburst prediction, such as multi-variable and multi-interference factors, three hybrid support vector machine (SVM) models optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO), Harris hawk optimization (HHO), and moth flame optimization (MFO) are proposed to predict rockburst hazard level (RHL). The RHL is determined according to four kinds of microseismic characteristic parameters including angular frequency ratio, total energy, apparent stress, and convexity radius. Then, six types of microseismic characteristic parameters are taken as input variables in 343 sets of data, including angular frequency ratio and total energy, etc.. And the RHL is taken as the output target of rockburst prediction. The classification performance of PSO-SVM, HHO-SVM, and MFO-SVM hybrid models is evaluated by accuracy (ACC), precision (PRE), and kappa coefficient. Findings reveal that the MFO-SVM model performs best in terms of accuracy, with ACC, PRE, and kappa coefficients reaching 0.9559, 0.9063, and 0.9094 respectively, while PSO-SVM and HHO-SVM have similar performances. However, the PSO-SVM, HHO-SVM, and MFO-SVM all perform better than the unoptimized SVM model. This confirms that the three optimization algorithms significantly enhance the rockburst prediction capacity of the SVM model to help mine practitioners apply machine learning methods to rockburst prediction problems appropriately.

The Clapp and Griffiths steel-process may be considered a pneumatic system, similar to the Bessemer, with the difference that the converter is fixed or non-tilting, and that the blast is introduced around the lower section of the converter instead of through its bottom. Mr. Griffiths was engineer-in-chief of the Gilchrist & Thomas basic dephosphorizing process during all the time those gentlemen were experimenting and working up their system, as Mr. G. communicated to me. After separating from these gentlemen, he began developing the present Clapp and Griffiths type of converter. Dr. Clapp, of Nantyglow, Monmouthshire, was a prominent physician in a large iron district. Previous to his association with Mr. Griffiths, he took out some patents on a process of his own for the manufacture of steel, which patents stood in Mr. Griffiths' way; hence the consolidation. Early in the summer of 1883, my attention was called to the experiments of Messrs. Clapp & Griffiths in Great Britain by a friend who had just returned from England. Later in that summer I went to Newport, on the border of Wales, where I met Messrs. Clapp and Griffiths and their friends. After visiting two small converters of their type which were in operation at different works, and spending a few days in the iron-districts of Wales, I went to London, where I met my friend Henry W. Oliver, Jr., who had already heard of the new steel-process. We decided to revisit Wales and examine more fully the process, more especially that Mr. Oliver might have the opportunity of coming practically in contact with the men and die process himself, so that his judgment might not be influenced by my sanguine feelings. Arsenic is a highly toxic compound that is naturally found in the environment and is released through the processing of sulphide minerals. Arsenate (As5+) is less toxic than arsenite (As3+) and is soluble in water but can form insoluble precipitates when metal ions are present. The arsenic removal processes used in industry assume that arsenic is in its pentavalent state. Hydrogen peroxide can be employed to oxidize arsenite; however, it is expensive. It has been shown that activated carbon can be used to catalyze the oxidation of arsenite with oxygen as the only consumed reagent at ambient conditions with an efficiency of 99% in less than 24 hours. The mechanism which oxidizes arsenite is not yet understood; however, this study shows that a strong oxidizing agent is formed in-situ. The species and amount of oxidant formed were determined via iodimetric titration and electrochemical methods. The production of oxidant was optimized by comparing the amount of oxidant formed in-situ to the relative amount of arsenite oxidized.

Laminated ceramics have received widely scientific and commercial attention because their properties, such as mechanical properties and electrical properties, can be tailored by adjusting the structure, thickness and composition of the different layers. For example, ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) which has a positive temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (,E) can be used to modify the negative tE of typical microwave dielectric ceramic BaNd2Ti4O12(BNT), However, BaNd2Ti4O12/Bi4TiO12/Bi4Ti3O12/BaNd2Ti4O12 (BNT/BIT/BNT) laminated ceramics could not be prepared by the general method because the optimal sintering temperature of BaNd2Ti4O12 ceramic (around 1350°C) was much higher than that of Bi4Ti3O12 ceramic (around 1100°C). In this research, a new method of spark plasma sintering (SPS) combined with post-sintering was successfully proposed to prepare BNT/BIT/BNT laminated ceramics. It was divided into three steps. In first step, the BaNd2Ti4O12 ceramics were prepared by conventional sintering method. In second step, the calcined and pre-pressed Bi4Ti3O12 powders were sandwiched between BaNd2Ti4O12 ceramic pellets and spark plasma sintered at 900°C for 10min to synthesize BNT/BIT/BNT composite ceramics. In the last step, a post-sintering was employed to reoxidize the partially reduced BNT/BIT/BNT composite ceramics. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) showed that BNT layer and BIT layer were well bonded and no significant interfacial infiltration between them was observed. The sandwiched BNT/BIT/BNT ceramic with 10.7% BIT in volume has a dielectric constant of 92.85, a low dielectric loss of 01068 and a small temperature coefficient of dielectric constant of 35 ppm/°C at MHz.

"In order to improve the properties of cast Ti-Al alloys to replace Ni-based superalloys past the low pressure stages of aircraft engines investigations into inoculation for grain refinement were carried out. Previous work showed isomorphic self-inoculation using Ti-Al-Nb particles was effective for grain refinement, however the relatively fast diffusion of Nb in Ti-Al make it difficult to observe the mechanism of nucleation. An alternative alloy was developed in the Ti-Ta system for isomorphic self-inoculation, maximizing the Ta content to improve the particles survivability in the melt. The powder processing produced comparatively small inoculant particles which dissolved, however larger particles were seen to survive solidification. The density difference between the inoculant particles and melt resulted in an inhomogeneous mixing of the particles and the melt with larger particles found near the outer edges of the ingots. Variations on particle size and interaction time between the inoculants and the melt resulted in the Ti-Ta inoculant reducing the as-cast equiaxed grain size by a factor of two compared to non-inoculated samples as well as increasing the equiaxed fraction in the ingot.INTRODUCTION Lightweight metals are of particular interest in aerospace applications. The hot sections of turbines are dominated by blades made of nickel based superalloys. Recently the GEnx turbine introduced TiAl blades in the last low pressure stage of the turbine to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency (Kim & Dimiduk, 1991). In order to carry these benefits deeper into the turbine the high temperature (>800oC) properties of the alloys must be improved. Current grain refinement methods to improve properties rely on boron additions which may not be applicable for all blades as brittle precipitates may be formed during processing (McCullough, Levi, Mehrabian, & Hyman, 1991). A novel grain refinement process was previously introduced called “isomorphic self-inoculation” using Ti-Al-Nb particles to successfully grain refine TiAl (Kennedy, Zollinger, Bouzy, & Daloz, 2016). In order to better understand the mechanism of this process an investigation was carried out using the same process but with a Ti-Ta alloy which is more stable in the TiAl melt than the Ti-Al-Nb."

O processo de estampagem a quente também conhecido como press hardening, é um dos métodos mais utilizados atualmente pela indústria automobilística para produzir aços de alta e ultra alta resistência. Esse processo é principalmente usado em peças relacionadas à segurança passiva e à resistência ao impacto, tais como pára-choques e barras de proteção laterais. O uso desse processo aumenta a segurança dos passageiros e reduz o peço do veículo e, portanto, o consumo de combustível. No presente estudo, amostras de aço ao boro foram deformadas a quente, não isotermicamente, a 850ºC e 750ºC em 30% a uma taxa de 0,5s-1. As microestruturas obtidas após deformação a 850ºC foram quase totalmente martensíticas, diferente das amostras deformadas a 750ºC, onde houve uma diminuição da fração volumétrica de martensita e um aumento da fração volumétrica de ferrita. Portanto, a deformação aplicada a 750ºC resultou em uma diminuição dos valores de microdureza. Desta forma, tornou-se possível investigar a influência da deformação em alta temperatura na transformação martensítica, na fração volumétrica de ferrita e nos resultados de microdureza.

Searles Lake, CA, contains the largest known domestic tungsten resource. The brines in this near-dry lake bed, located in the Mojave Desert 130 mi northeast of Los Angeles, contain an estimated 135 MMlb of tungsten. However, the low concentration of tungsten (0.080 g/L W03) in the supersaturated brine makes selective tungsten extraction very difficult. Although many brine chemicals are extracted from the lake, tungsten recovery was an elusive goal prior to Bureau of Mines development of an ion-exchange technique. This publication describes the Bureau process. The following subjects are ad-dressed: ? The Searles Lake tungsten resource. ? General problems associated with tungsten recovery. ? Bureau research objectives. ? Synthesis of ion-exchange resins. ? Development of a two-stage ion-exchange tungsten extraction and concentration procedure. ? Product recovery and purification. ? Economic evaluation. Flowsheets for recovering three products (calcium tungstate, sodium tungstate, and tungstic oxide) are presented and evaluated, as well as a summary of the research effort and potential applications.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi verificar as propriedades mecânicas de uma solda MAG elaborando e qualificando um procedimento de soldagem. Para isso foi utilizado quatro ensaios mecânicos: tração, macrográfia, micrografia e dureza. Foi estipulado o limite de escoamento, de ruptura, o alongamento e a estricção; macrográfico, determinou-se, a olho nu, a zona fundida, a zona de ligação, a zona termicamente afetada e o metal de base; micrográfico, tração, definiu-se os componentes microestruturais da solda e do metal de base; dureza e foi estabelecida a tenacidade da solda e do metal de base.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). "One of the principal goals of modern industry is to minimize the environmental impact and increase the materials- and energy-efficiency of transforming raw materials into valuable products. This paper will highlight our latest laboratory-scale research in low-energy, low-solvent reactivity of metal oxides and their conversion into popular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (e.g. Basolite® Z1200 component ZIF-8), and metallodrugs (e.g. bismuth subsalicylate, active component of Pepto-Bismol®). Mechanochemical ion- and liquid-assisted grinding (ILAG) and ""accelerated aging"" techniques will be presented, along with novel low-energy and solvent-free approaches, inspired by geological weathering processes, for converting metal oxides into metal-organic materials. INTRODUCTIONThe development of environmentally-friendly processes, which would in the same time be more materials- and energy-efficient than the existing ones, is one of the central concerns of modern chemical research. In that sense, the focus of the chemist has been mainly on the preparation of carbon-based organic molecules and adaptation of traditional organic synthesis to the recently delineated ideals of Green Chemistry. However, there is a growing realization within the chemistry community that significant energy, materials, and ecology-related benefits can be achieved and, indeed, targeted in the transformations of materials that are typically associated with inorganic chemistry and minerals processing. The principal aim of this highlight contribution is to illustrate how, through the use of approaches associated with solventfree chemistry and mechanochemistry (James et al., 2012), one can develop a clean and efficient system of chemical and materials transformations involving oxide precursors that normally belong to the realm of inorganic chemistry and mineral processing. In particular, this contribution will provide an overview of the recently developed mechanochemical and solvent-free reactivity of metal oxides towards small organic molecules. These mechanochemical reactions, including the methods of liquid-assisted grinding (LAG, Frišcic & Jones, 2009) and ion- and liquid-assisted grinding (ILAG, Frišcic, 2010), have so far provided a radically different means to construct advanced metal-organic materials (e.g. porous metal-organic frameworks, [MOFs] or metallodrugs) by rehabilitating metal oxides as precursors, eliminating the use of bulk organic solvents, and avoiding the use of high temperatures."

KAISER Bauxite Co., a subsidiary of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp., has been mining and shipping Jamaican bauxite for over a year. On Feb. 10, 1953 the first boat load of bauxite left Port Kaiser, Jamaica, for the company's alumina plant at Baton Rouge, La. To provide its own source of the aluminum ore, a Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. exploration party started initial reconnaissance in 1947. This work, and subsequent exploration, led to the acquisition of reserves sufficient to warrant a full-scale mining operation for several decades.

"INTRODUCTION Outer space technology and exploration have reached a tipping point so that mining and mineral processing in outer space is now a certainty and not a dream. Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."
