One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

The pollution of our water supply, Lake Michigan, is a continuing threat so long as our overflows from combined sewers exist. The problems have become even more acute during recent years, due to the increase of paved area- which accelerates and enlarges the flows of storm water. After each storm, mixtures of raw sewage and storm water spill into our waterways. If the storm is too large for the drainage systems, the mixture backs up into our streets and basements. Under severe conditions, it may even become necessary to open the locks, and discharge the polluted water into Lake Michigan. Consider the scope of the problem, as shown in Figure 1. The area in which combined sewers exist is 375 square miles, located in the central parts of Chicago and 49 suburbs. There are an estimated 640 overflow outlets to the waterways, each requiring attention. The capacity of outlets tributary to the waterways has increased dramatically over the years. Each time a pocket of upstream flooding is drained into the channels, the problem of its rapid disposition increases. Another difficulty is that the bottom of our waterways is covered with a blanket of accumulated sludge, ranging in depth up to 3-feet. Gas-liquid contacting in the packed bed is a common operation in metallurgical reactors. Research has shown that, unlike wetting flow, non-wetting liquid flows in the form of discrete droplets or rivulets. Thus, modeling of the liquid phase as a continuum is in contradiction to the observations. Also, for the non-wetting case, continuum models have failed to describe liquid flow path when the liquid source is a point source. The aim of the current work is to put forward a combined Lagrangian-Eulerian approach to model the liquid and gas flow in the packed bed. Liquid is assumed discrete and modeled using a force balance approach. Gas is assumed to be interpenetrating continua and modeled using k-emodel for turbulent flow. Structured packing is assumed and x- ray imaging technique is used to visualize liquid flow lines in the bed. Simulation results for liquid flow path compared with the experiments.

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

Efficient separation of trace muscovite from the surface/interface of quartz grains was accomplished during oxidizing calcination and catalytic pressure leaching of the hydrothermal quartz. Experimental results suggest that 98.97% or more of the muscovite was separated when quartz sand was calcined at 900 °C for 5 h and then leached by hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride solutions as substitutes for leaching agents containing fluorides. The chemical processing techniques show high selectivity in purifying quartz sand by transforming mineral muscovite into active structures during oxidizing calcination, and then dissolving the active substances during catalytic pressure leaching

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

The No. 2 Ore-shaft, at Mount Isa Mines Limited, involving the use of boreholes as ropeways for the upper portion thereof, constitutes, we believe, a unique feature in hoisting installations. The boreholes were sunk from the surface to a depth of 390 ft., thus eliminating the necessity of erecting the hoist at an underground location or construction of the shaft for this distance. Fig. 1, a diagrammatic cross-section through the shaft, shows the complete installation from the surface down to the first loading station below No. 7 haulage level.During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impracticable and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5-level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5-level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin.Referring again to Fig. 1, it is apparent that the section above No. 4-level, if opened out to full shaft size, would be inoperative and would serve no useful purpose except, possibly, as a ventilation duct. Original plans therefore did not include continuation of the shaft above No. 4-level. Excavation of a hoist room upon No. 5-level; erection of sheave wheels just below No. 4-level, and a long inclined ropeway leading from the hoist to the sheaves, were incorporated in the general layout. Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.

"Usually, steady state mass balances are used for the design of mineral processing plants. However, this tool does not take into account the impact of process inputs variability nor does it evaluate process transient behaviours between stationary states, such as mill start-up and shutdown. The use of advanced simulations enables the integration of dynamic behaviours in process design decision-making by highlighting situations that are undetectable by using only steady state mass balances. Applying these simulation tools to brown field projects allows the simulator performances to be calibrated and validated on actual plant data before it is used as a prediction tool for the modified plant.Three (3) simulators were implemented at the design stage of a major upgrade project for an ore processing plant in order to assess process behaviours under different production scenarios. These simulators were built to evaluate the impacts on major elements such as mine production, ore stockpile, concentrator production as well as water demand. A validation of individual equipment models was performed whenever sufficient measured data was available. The simulators were then used to study the impact of ore variability (grade, hardness, throughput), to assess day-to-day production special events, and to evaluate the true stockpiles live capacity.The use of a stochastic simulator for equipment sizing allowed a more precise sizing of many pieces of equipment and avoided important expenses in the fresh water pumping system. The dynamic simulator also confirmed that the water in place system would suffice, even in the most demanding production scenario. Finally, the stockpile simulator allowed an important production bottleneck to be quantified and then made possible the assessment of various practical solutions for the stockpiling-reclaiming issues.Post start-up, process data underlines the fact that using advanced simulation tools was useful to mitigate process-related risks associated to the plant expansion, showing generally accurate prediction and adequate equipment sizing, leading to smooth process commissioning. The presented methods are part of what is now routine in Soutex’s participation in both greenfield and brownfield projects."

The occurrence of lollingite (FeAs2 ) in the Broken Hill lode is recorded by an analysis of lollingite published in the Annual Report of the Department of Mines, New South Wales, for the year 1934 (p. 69). The analysed specimen came from the North Broken Hill mine, and material from the same occurrence (Specimeh No. 1), as well as two specimens (Nos. 3 and 4) from the Zinc Corporation mine, have been forwarded· to us by Mr. M. Mawby of the Zinc Corporation Mine. This material has been supplemented by another specimen (No. 2) from the Zinc Corporation mine, passed over to us by Dr. I. Wark.The original analysis of lollingite is quoted in Table I, and shows that the Broken Hill lollingite contains appreciable amounts of cobalt and nickel, and, indicates that the iron is to a considerable extent replaced by cobalt and nickel, so that its formula should be written (FeCoNi) As2This is supported by a microscopical examination of a polished surface of the lollingite, in which no individual arsenides of cobalt and nickel can be detected.Coarse grained galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite are attached to our specimen of lollingite from the North mine, and are separated by a sharp junction from a mass of lollingite associated with some arsenopyrite and garnet. The massive lollingite can be distinguished from arsenopyrite in the hand specimen by a much brighter, silvery lustre, against which arsenopyrite appears a dull silver grey; but the passage from lollingite to arsenopyrite appears transitional.

High-fidelity, immersive training is known for its learning and logistical benefits. While other industries have used virtual reality (VR) for decades, the same uptake has not been seen in mining. NIOSH recently developed an adaptable, scalable VR training platform, VR Mine Rescue Training (VR-MRT), which has attracted significant industry interest. NIOSH is using VR-MRT to understand the barriers to adoption and implementation of VR. As a part of a larger effort to assess the effectiveness and implementation of VR-MRT, researchers have conducted pre-implementation interviews. In this paper, the authors use feedback from individuals at various implementation levels to assess the acceptability and appropriateness of VR-MRT and identify potential implementation barriers for VR more generally. Researchers also describe ongoing efforts to overcome these barriers as NIOSH works to position VR-MRT as a supplemental resource more generally for mine safety training.

Its purpose is to compare the amount of dust and gases produced as a result of blasting charges of dynamite (1) in drill holes, (2) in bombs, and (3) in mud-cap or adobe shots.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSValuable assistance and advice on stemming were given by members of the staff at the Bureau of Mines, as acknowledged in previous publications. 4/TEST PROCEDUREThe results used for comparison in this report are from dust and gas samples taken after blasting (1) four regular test rounds with no stemming, (2) five bomb shots, and (3) two mud-cap or adobe shots.The four rounds were the standard 26-hole test rounds designed to break 4 feet of rock. The sulphide ores of the principal lodes of the Boulder Mines are mainly composed of a schistose guess with a varying proportion of silica and lime, containing tellurides of gold, silver and mercury, associated with iron pyrites. The Chestnut Ridge Anticline is a prominent structure in southwestern Pennsylvania, USA. This structure has brought two economically valuable limestone formations to the surface, where they are easily accessible to room-and-pillar mining. Nine active crushed stone quarries, an underground research facility, and one industrial facility currently operate along the linear trend that represents the axis of the anticline. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has identified significant variation in levels of horizontal stress within relatively short distances at shallow overburdens along the anticline. At one quarry, the horizontal stress is high enough to shear strata with a modulus of approximately 77 Gpa. Conversely, zones of extension were observed in parts of another quarry, indicating very low horizontal stress conditions. This study found that high levels of horizontal stress are to be expected in this very stiff rock formation and that local geologic and topographic structures are capable of altering the magnitude and possibly the orientation of the horizontal stress field.

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

Area mining is a surface mining method that allows for efficient mining and contemporaneous reclamation of tabular or bedded deposits, e.g., coal. Mine planning methods for area mines differ from those of open pit metal mines. Area mines in the Powder River Basin (PRB) use various processes for mine planning at both the strategic and tactical stages. With the ever changing commodity markets, it is becoming increasingly important for mine operators to be able to react quickly to the changing business environment. Tools that allow for the development and rapid comparison of production schedule scenarios are key to ensuring agile mine operations. A survey of mine engineers responsible for mine design and production scheduling at coal operations provides clarity on the current mine design and production scheduling processes in the PRB, as well as a discussion on potential solutions to upcoming challenges. In this article, we describe various mine planning processes used by the coal producers in the Powder River Basin. The survey identifies a clear gap in the ability to create comprehensive schedules associated with limited tools and lack of engineering labor needed to frequently conduct the mine design and scheduling process.

Coal mining companies in Australia are managing the high-consequence risks across their operations more effectively by using an interactive online risk management system known as Riskgate Developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, Australia, Riskgate contains detailed information about 11 high-consequence risk areas (called topics in the system) for opencut and underground coal mines (Table 1). The existing topics are: fires; strata control for underground mining; ground control for opencut mining; tires; isolation; collisions; explosions and explosives; manual tasks; and trips, slips and falls. Every Riskgate topic is focused on coal industry activities (mining, processing, transport and storage). The scope includes mine sites, lease areas and mine infrastructure (mobile, fixed plant, field equipment, buildings, road and rail transport), and all aspects of the mine life cycle from design through to decommissioning. The topics uniformly recognize that a loss of control can result in injury or fatality, equipment damage, production loss, reputation loss and environmental damage. However, the priority focus for Riskgate is the safety of mine personnel.
